What's New in Podtastic — June 19, 2026
The biggest change this week isn't really a single feature. It's that Podtastic is now free to try, and the paid tier is $2.99/month on an annual plan. We also shipped a new CarPlay tab and a friendlier first-listen experience.
If you missed the pricing announcement, the dedicated post is here. Below is what's new across the app this week.
Podtastic is now free to try
Until this week, Podtastic was a paid app. From now on, the basic player — your subscriptions, your playback, your queue, your library — is free. Forever. You don't need to pay to use Podtastic as your main podcast app.
What's on the paid tier: Pod-telligence. That's the AI feature set — Smart Summaries, Smart Topics, Smart Playback, Smart Jump Ahead. The free tier gives you Pod-telligence on your two most-recently-added shows, so you can try the AI features on real podcasts you actually listen to. Upgrade to the paid tier and all your shows get them.
If you import a big library — say, by uploading an OPML file from another app — the same two-most-recent default kicks in, no setup needed. Subscribe to a few new shows and Pod-telligence rotates onto those automatically.
For the bigger picture on why we picked this model, our post on the freemium trend across podcast apps walks through what's happening across the category in 2026.
$2.99/month on the annual plan
The paid tier is now $2.99/month if you pay annually — billed as $34.99 for a year of Pod-telligence on every show you subscribe to. About the cost of one decent coffee per month for a fully-featured, AI-powered podcast app.
The full reasoning is in our pricing announcement post. Short version: the old $9.99 was too high for what podcast listeners typically pay for a player, and we'd rather have a lot more users at a price that's an obvious yes than fewer users at a premium price.
CarPlay support arrives on iOS
Podtastic now works in CarPlay. If you've been holding off because driving with Podtastic meant Bluetooth and a phone propped on the dashboard, that's done.
The CarPlay home tab is called Just Press Play. It's a list of episodes Podtastic thinks you're most likely to want next, with the playable episode count right there in each row so you can see at a glance how much is queued under each show.
The tap target is the whole row. There's no second tap, no detail screen, no choosing between three episodes. You tap a show, the episode starts.
Built for the way you actually listen in the car — eyes on the road, one tap.
A friendlier first-listen experience
For your first listen on a fresh Podtastic install, the Play screen now shows a "coffee break" message — a friendly nudge that your first batch of podcasts is processing in the background and there's nothing you need to do yet. Get a coffee. Come back in a minute.
It solves a specific problem. Brand-new users would land on an empty Play tab right after subscribing to their first podcasts, see nothing playable, and bounce. The coffee-break screen explains what's happening, roughly how long it'll take, and what'll be ready when you come back. iOS and Android both got this in the same release.
Smaller fixes
- The X dismiss button on the Pod-telligence banner used to overlap the toggle switch on some screen sizes. Properly spaced out now.
- The CarPlay Just Press Play tab shows the playable episode count next to each show name.
- Smart Summary view now correctly hides on free-tier accounts for shows that don't have Pod-telligence enabled — same behaviour on iOS and Android.
- The referral share line and the referral reward wording were tidied up so they match what you actually get when a friend signs up.
Thanks to everyone who's sent feedback over the last couple of weeks. The CarPlay redesign in particular started with one piece of feedback ("the For You tab is too many taps when I'm driving") that turned into a bigger rethink. Keep the notes coming.
Listen smarter with Podtastic
Want to try the free tier of Podtastic? Podtastic is a fully featured podcast player for iOS and Android, built around Pod-telligence (the AI features) and Audio Enhancements (deterministic DSP tuned for spoken-word audio):
- Smart Summaries — AI summaries of every podcast and episode so you know what's coming before you hit play
- Smart Topics — key topics surfaced across your favourite shows so you can jump straight to what matters
- Smart Playback — your queue fills itself based on what you actually listen to
- Smart Jump Ahead — auto-skips commonly-skipped sections of an episode (intros, recaps, asides), powered by AI topic detection plus aggregated listening data; a single tap on any control surface jumps you to the next Smart Topic on demand
- Skip Silence — auto-removes silences from speech so episodes flow without dragging
- Enhance Voices — a gentle EQ and compression preset that keeps voices clear in any room
