A three mill beating leaves their World Cup hopes relying on mathematics . Good morning Aaron, yes. I mean, Scotland come on they needed to go in there with a game plan. That game plan was chucked out the window within seven minutes. I mean, it wasn't good, was it? Not at all . So Steve Clark reckons you're going home. Scotland fans, are you optimistic? Are you just have you got a little bit of light left in your World Cup campaign? Oh wait five, nine zero nine six nine three . What went wrong last night? Are you good enough or are you proud of what this team has achieved? Have you done your own calculations? Is there an equation we need to know? Can you come on and give us a math lesson this morning? Well three points be enough to see you through an out of the group phase oh eight five nine zero nine six nine three David, who else join here from this morning? Yeah, on top of that, I'm curious to see or hear what the callers think about the format. Scotland might not know until the twenty seventh whether they're in or out of this tournament . Forget the players, that's their job, but the fans are out there paying for extra nights on the hope that they might stay in. Let's hear from you on that. Did Scotland get the right lineup to start with? That's another one. And also, did Scotland try and play too much football ? What do you think on their tactics ? I like five, nine oh nine six nine three Scotland fans would you made it make of Steve Lark's comments last night that you're going home . Is he being pessimistic? Is he daughter? Is there still a chance? Brazil fans can you win the World Cup and England fans talk to us about Thomas Tukal, who should he start in the final game against Panama and we are now seeing the completion of the group stages. What are your thoughts on this World Cup so far? It's taken a lot of criticism like every single tournament does . Have you enjoyed it? Secretly, even if it's a guilty pleasure, come on anonymously. five. nine hundred nine, six nine three we're with you until eleven o'clock this morning. Let's start six by talking to a Scotland fan , Scotland legend, icon , Nicki Campbell. Do you still believe? Not really . No. No, I mean , I was at the eighty two match in Seville, was behind the goal, which you might remember with David Nerry scored that long goal described as a toe poke by Jimmy Hill, incredible. I was looking at a lineup this morning , you know, we'd Suness, we'd Strack and John Robertson, we'd alan Hansen in that team. The first Scotland Brazil match, I remember seventy four, seventy four World Cup I was thirteen years old . And I was looking at the plays we had in the score, Manchester United fans will revere him, Martin Buckhan. Billy Bram there's a statue of Bram there isn't the Dark Leash. There will be a statue to Darleash one day. Joe Jordan, there should be a statue to him. Dennis Law, there's a statue to him. It's the quality of the players. The game has changed. We used to have world class players . We don't have those players anymore. You know what? Everyone's, oh, the Scotland fans are great. No Scotland, no party. I'd rather have your word door. I'd rather have miserable dur fans and a good team. David James, what did make you of that? I think that's an interesting comment there. Nikki, have you obviously watched the game last night were you thinking that it was achievable up till the sixth minute? Seventh , it was too stressful. It would have been too stressful for me to watch. I think it's been a very nice I watched the highlights this morning. I don't enjoy it. I had to work. So to be quite honest with you, to be quite candid. I took a sleeping tablet so I didn't wake up in the middle of the night and check the phone because if I'd done that , Aar'ons disapproving. If I'd done that, I would have got all stressed and I would not have been able to get back. Someone who wakes up at half past three, the thought of taking a sleeping aid petrifies me . The one time I've missed my alarm is because I would no I took a painkiller because I had a tooth problem and I woke up five minutes before my show started and my boss was going absolutely mad. Hence your grimace Jeefly, I've watched the highlights this morning and it's just it's another comedy of errors. It's another catalogue of catastrophe in a history of World Cup catastrophe. Ollie McBurney, you had why didn't they take McBurney? He's the most informed strike you got. And if Harvey Barnes had said yes , that might have made a difference. All right, oh eight, nine zero nine six nine three the thoughts to Nicki Camps. For having me. Have a gorgeous day. Enjoy the sunshine, Nicki Gamble. Thanks , of course , of very much of this parish Scottish icon as well. Scotland fans. Okay. Oh wait five, nine nine six nine three we're with you until eleven o'clock this morning. Let's have a debrief. Let's have a postm ortem on last night Johnny is a Scotland fan. Good morning, Mate Morning . What would you like to say about last night's game? I mean, there was so much hope so, much optimism. Everyone was pouring their energy into it. I was listening to the bagpipes getting emotional when the boys are out there warming up and then it was just a comedy of errors . Well , I mean, I'll start my contribut ion with a sound effect. See if you can guess what this is . No, it's not a cannabis. It's a carniv al breezy. Other carbonated beverages are available, but not in Scotland. I think I need it this morning. Propologies of a burst after this . Oh nice. Johnny, Johnny in Scottish this morning because bad in Scottish has just happened all over again. I mean, I don't know what you'd be on for me because Nicky just told the whole story. He's got a couple of years on me, but I remember all of those and I wasn't lucky enough to be at Spain in eighty two , but I remember all those things as well. I mean, we've got authors of our own misfortune . Despite the fact that he's pledged his allegiance to the V team, I'm very keen on Patt Evans punditry and on the wireless he was saying quite rightly with his keeping to a bowling braid. We were the offers of our own misfortune. Now whether he went into the detail of all three games or not, I don't know, but looking across the piece, we should have beaten Hay a couple of goals . Everybody was so happy that we won and that was great. We should have been a couple of seagos. Then we probably would have been all right against Morocco. I felt that he played again . He played a black hole for seventy minutes and then he ran at them in the footballing gods, would have granted us a draw in that game surely . But sadly, the footballing gods aren't in control of their own . And again, Johnny do we have we just Johnny did you think did you think you could do it ? Well, do you think you can still do it ? Yeah. Oh, I mean, that's an elapid or whatever's, isn't it? It's an elapider in Fantinos . And you never know what's in there. I've seen him at the game last night in Nate and Office. He's been at every gate, Johnny. Has he has he got double? I think yeah, I think if he's if he's doing a if he's got a book with stamps of the stadium in him, I think he's clocked up pretty much every stadium It looked like him you need a good job wouldn't anyway. Do you remember the guy that threw the money in the press conference at Bl atar . I saw him the other day online and you know what happened to the money afterwards? The Swiss authorities counted it up and gave it back to him. It was real money. It was like dollar ten. And they did I mean fair plate, fair play to join should it should he have taken Ollie McBerney eighteen goals look I know I'm an EFL advocate but he has had some season at whole city . I've read about him, I've about to your greater knowledge in terms of seeing him on the park . I know that his previous involvement in Scotland wasn't fantastically productive . Now it's this balance, this apparently there's another team to downsize in the finals as well and good luck to them. I don't really and their German manager, we try the German manager once in one . He's all about this balance between like team and and player. And I mean, you know, a lot some dedicated players have been left behind . And Clarky, I think, is very much like that. He's built a squad of players on April, many of whom probably shouldn't even get weakened in a marshal squad, but they've got the camps I'm not going to criticize any of them and they all were the hard maths and they tried as hard as he killed every one of them. And I'm super proud. I really am . How can he fault any of them for us ? Neither we die . I don't think that's fair, especially the momentaster did when you tap his outside. There's no shame in anything apart that for school oops . But anyway, I'm the same one that was disallowed that probably shouldn't have and all that stuff. So yes, authors of our own misfortune once again as far as going through is concerned, you tell me switch on the supercomputer. I understand Opta says something in the high forties, does it? Yeah, it's high mid to high forties. I'll tell you what I'm going to do. When we when we push on , I'm going to give you the permutations and what Scotland really needs the maths and how it means to go back to Boston Mate. That would be the best thing. Go back to Boston, please I'm pretty good . That would be brilliant. The Bostonians would love it. They love them, didn't they? And I love the Copper World Cup story in amongst the billions and the billions and the ticket prices and the gouging and the absolutely horrible nature of the commercialization of the beautiful game. I mean, it's not a world cup I knew when I was a child and I'm not just looking back through those tinted glasses. I'm looking back through Copper Festival of beautiful food war and not something that's designed to generate, you know, enough money to buy houses for people . My name's not Petro Bible. Johnny anyway. Johnny, John Graham, great call. Do this for me, make sure that Iron Bruer is full full sugar. I need an original one I can't be doing. No sugar free. No diabetes , I advise every man of my age drinks eager Johnny, you're the man. Thank you so much. Lot of points made there by Johnny the Scotland fan. So so many points. I mean, he's talking about the football side of it. He's talking about the cultural element of it, the fact that the Scottish fans have gone in and absolutely taken the USA by a storm, bringing their passion, bringing themselves to it. eight five nine zero nine six nine three . There is a fabulous article on the BBCort we Spbsite David James, which lays out anything and everything that Scotland need to potentially qualify nine groups left to play. Scotland need four teams to be worse off than them they need either Ecuador or Curacao to fail to win or Curacao to get a victory by at least four goals and Ecuador to fail to win Sweden to lose to Japan by four more goals Paraguay and Australia a draw would send both through because both are on three points Scotland Paraguay to lose by two or more goals or Australia to be beaten by at least four they need Senegal and Iraq to draw or to beat Senegal by no more than two goals as you can tell, I mean I,'d say go on on the website and sit and sort of like build your own mini paper based super computer, lay it all out on a bit of paper, sit, ruminate, call us. I wait five, nine zero nine, six, nine three Scotland fans are you gonna are gonna have the math? So are the coins going to drop view? Is everything going to drop you so you can make it through and out of this group phase? Steve Clark doesn't believe so. Robert, do you believe you're going to make it? No , I don't think so Break it down for us . I don't think the trade as good as you can be . And actually look at the goals against Morocco and against Brazil. Stupid mistakes with me. There's school boy errors and that's my questions and I don't think I said now I hate saying that there's a work he seemsus team with it and I think that the gold distance the main state, that's the big point. That's the one is going to stop us. I can't change I can't change my favorite because you're out Robert, I have to ask this question. I'll be interested in any of the listeners and their view on this as well. If Scotland do go through and there is a chance still that they're going to go through and everyone's going to be very happy because Scotland will finally make it to the playoffs or the knockout sorry . On the form of the last two games , there's a heavy chance that they're going to play a side who is capable of spanking them , is it worth going through to the knockouts? Corsays . Of course because the boys are supposed the boys are going to make the event. I mean that's a big stretch for us. I've never done it before and that's what we get around a score and come up and teach you and please as please be good as you can do which you know you can, then you never know what hungers. See, I love it. Robert, I love this optimism, but as I say, but there's a scenario Aaron where they could get through, get beat four, five mill in the first ever knockout game. You've made history, but you're leaving on the back of three straight defeats. And it's kind of that paradox of success in defeat. He's got there on the plane happily. And in fact, I mean they've been brilliant. The future was worse, worse than go home when they share . I mean, I mean there's a plane flying over, right ? And they spend fifteen minutes at Chester 's flying drink air train dry . I mean, I tried divorce New York drink s now. I never good but I'm not her to sleep she 's afraid onto the page as well as you can get you never know Hey, no Scotland party Robert, that's what they're singing and they say they're still going to be partying they've taken the USA by storm question is they, are going to be sticking in the USA once these group stages have concluded? Thank you. Robert Fiorkor. Oh wait, oh wait five, nine zero nine six nine three Scotland fans come on and debrief. Just break it all down. You've had a chance to sort of sleep on it, kind of sleep on it. If you got any sleep last night, of course, weather absolutely baking . Come on, have your say, give us a call this morning. five nine nine six nine three David James and I 'm waiting to take your call. We're with you until eleven o'clock this morning. Let's get the thoughts though of the Scotland boss here is Steve Clark with Ali Barber. Steve, you named a really positive lineup. You threw everything you could at Brazil and between both boxes were really strong. I suppose when you come up against that level it's in your own box and in the opposition box that it's the toughest. I think you see their quality in the final third of the pitch. We didn't have that tonight. We created some chances but didn't take them . But listen, let's be honest the best anymore. It is difficult to set the sideline and come up against that quality because I suppose the question is how do you counter it and they have so much of it right across the pitch, but certainly from a work great point of view, your team did I imagine all they could. Now unbelievable the shift that the players put in the windows played ninety minutes and that heat that humidity were outstanding . But we have to be better. That's if we want to compete at this at this level, we have to be better. You cannot start we actually started five minutes, four or five minutes. We're moving the ball quite nicely on the pitch. I thought we were settling in the game all right and then we make a mistake like that. You can't do that at this level because it puts you on the back foot and then it becomes a long night . Some of the players have been in here and you can see how disappointed they are going to be await now, but in terms of who we've spoken to, they feel that it might be a bridge too far. Are you of the same opinion? Yeah, for me, for sure, I think we're going home. What would be should that happen? How would you reflect an orders very, very soon after the game, but this tournament as a whole , you know, the way that you've come in and approached it and planned for it and prepared for it and the quality of the teams that you've come up against . Only Scotland can get a winnerable first game and then get number five in the world and number six in the world of their next two games. That's the level we're at. Steve, thank you very much. Hopefully we do get to see you again. Hopefully Ellie, thank you. Thank you . The Scotland boss Steve Clark with the BBC's Ellie Barber there. Scotland fans, how did you feel about your manager being someone would say refessionally honest, someone would say he's doweless, someone would say he's negative, he's pessimistic. Is he just being realistic there? Is that him? Is that the crux of Steve Clark your manager ? David, what do you make of it? I found that I find that very interesting. Obviously it's a difficult moment for him. They just got beat three Nil and the odds are against them. That's fair to say. But in one breath talking about how the players put the shift in, give it a hundred percent to then say I think I'm going home. I just felt to give some encouragement at least to the Scotland fans who are going to be waiting out there, the Scotland fans who might want to fly out there like Robert said just to celebrate the history they're making. It could have been put a little bit more positively, I think , in the sense that we've given everything we can get or we've got and just hope that things go our way. But that was I'm slight surprised by it. Stevie, what do you make of your manager? I think I think he's alright. I think he's fine . I think it is it is and what but was that was that him being realistic? Was that him being pessimistic? Yesterday when he says, I think we know him . He's just being a human. It just seems that the way he is. And they was the point of saying we're going to be this sina . What I found very interesting was two days ago I was in Portugal and the Portuguese are not overly enthusiastic about Ronaldo and which is fine. And then what I did find what I did find about his Holland game was they played this against the sixth and seventh best teams in the world and then and so you got McDomini, you you got him you've got him TME, you've got him all in midfield etc . But what they have is other players around the bed and their own teams when they play at club level . And so they seem very fine and they are very good, they're very good players , but they're lucky upfront, they're lucky in defense at the same time , I get team Russia , team score onto them, but they just and the same reason I want I want them to find out against Gyara, you know, and then you have to or you have to sort of think about things about how you play football against the teams that defend . And then that's what Ingly never did. And I'm like what I would say is where was in I think I think Scotland had done very, very well to get to where they are . And I don't I don't really get into those sort of the fun thing about what's great . But just football players. That's all they are. Just football players Steve it's they try their best . All they do is they try their best and then that 's the way it works . Stevie, I love your points about it. I'm going back to what Aaron said about the manager and the comments . How do you think the players feel when they hear the manager publicly saying that he thinks they're out? When they're going to have to wait out there for another three or four days waiting to see if they can still make it. How do you think that all impacts on the players? Well it's a very odd situation. You know, for example, my football is my quad football and I love them that must be mental. I must be crazy just sitting there for two or three days thinking Miss Connie Harton and that you know and my football was a Celtic and they made a great a great time against Harts in the last day of the season. That's real that's real football and this is this is meentant to essially bonkers in fact . Steve , are you going to make it ? Oh, that's that's a good oom, Stevie. That's my science day a week . You gonna watch Yeah, you're going to watch every game now, Ste ve, just to see whether or not it's going to happen because I'm retired now and which is quite a nice thing to be. You know, I've watched every single game of the whole World Cup and well any maker. Why need you to do Stevie's? Get yourself a little bit big old big old bit of paper older . But that's your thoughts. What do you think? Jam, what do I think? I've looked at the permutations. I know Aaron has pointed everyone to the BBC website and then literally read out the whole BBC website so he can just record what he said. But I've done the permutations here and you know what? There's a good chance because a lot of the needed results are from the teams that are top of the group beating teams lower obviously below them. And I did some homework yesterday stato, Stevie, I'm a bit of a stato . Traditionally, last World Cup edition was an exception, but since nineteen eighty six, traditionally at least two teams have one hundred percent records in the group stages. So that means if we continue with that tradition, the teams at Scotland need to win, I the best group team best team in the group beating lower teams will do that. But we could end up on the twenty eighth, the last day basically waiting to find out whether you go through. You'll be awaiting you'll be watching it. He will be. Oh wait , five, nine and nine six nine three news on the way here on five live. But first up, let's talk to Peter. How are you Pete? Hello . Just so disappointed today . I mean we're biggest players just haven't performed in the last three games. I mean we've got four or five really good players and they just haven't performed The only player that's really played well for us in the three games of Lewis Ferguson, but our big players McGinn has been anonymous really in the three games and it's so disappointing . Is that because of the way that Steve Clark is set up? What is it? Is it pressure I just don't know what it is. I think it must be a Scottish thing where big players don't play on the on the world stage. I mean, hey, it's been great having us there . I mean, you've got teams like Italy, Denmark who haven't been at the World Cup. So it's been great seeing our country being there, but it's so disappointing that we haven't performed. The other thing is, I mean, we've got four or five players who play at a lower standard. And you see that last night. I mean, these guys are not used to playing against the best players in the world and it really shone out last night . I just got to jump in on that point there because I was speaking to some fans, some Scottish fans and stuff last night, funny enough and we were looking at the Curaco , the sorry the Cape Verdi team and where a lot of their players come from and where they're playing and they're not playing at the level some of the Scottish players you're mentioning are, yet they haven't lost a game. Is it down at the players or going back to what Aaron said? Do you think it's about the way those players were asked to play ? No, I think it's more the stand of the team that we're playing. I mean, they've been playing two really good well, the first game, they won that , but I mean they've played Morocco and they've played Brazil . Top team team a top ten teams in the world. So I mean we're really unlucky with the draw as well. How much times have we ended up playing Brazil in the World Cup? It's unbelievable really every time we get in the World Cu It's not easy fifth meeting yesterday. Fifth meeting yesterday Steve Clark also came out and he said that Scotland are going home . Do you believe that? Do you believe there? I mean, do you have hope in could pan out over the next few days? Where are you with this ? It's going to go to the last match and then we'll be knocked out. Just watch them wait until the scratch thing. We'll have a bath hook to the last match and then we'll be knocked out . Just watch what happens So Pete, here's one for you. Just I'm curious and any listeners who've got a point on this. How would you feel having won a game in the group stages being knocked out by a team possibly like Kate Verdi who could theoretically draw all their gam es . Well that's just aware of it is it? I mean it's it would just be a Scottish thing . It would it would mean we've seen so much over the years with I mean I mean Billy Bremner just missing the post against Brazil and if he had scored that goal we would have been through. We've seen so much we have so much hope for Scottish fans and then it seems to be a lose of it. Never mind. I mean, we've been on the world stage again and let's hope we can get back again . Absolutely, Pete, thank you so much. That's Peter who's giving us a call this morning. I wait five nine nine six nine three Scotland fans we are we're doing a mini postmortem after last night's defeat three Nill to Brazil it started off in the worst possible ways . You let Brazilian for that opening goal and then it just felt very , very edgy, didn't it? I watched it on the BBC. It felt edgy, I felt uncomfortable . It was a tough tough, watch, but what about you guys going forward? Are you going to make it? Steve Clark reckons you're going home. Scotland fans, do you have belief ? Now six oh six on five live Comes again in the corner . Bohemi detected at him and having been behind twice Morocco and now in front substitutes to be a head with the goal. This could be in here, it's in Bolo, edge of the area, Canada trying to hold him up. It's well laid off. It's Manzappi and it squeezes under Grepo and Switzerland have double their advantage still neck for the co hosts and they've wrapped it up in style . Fidelgo hammers it into the top corner and it's free from three for Mexico . Oh eight five nine nine six nine three this is six o six here on five live with you until eleven o'cl ock this morning. Adrian Charles on the way up after that and then breakfast in America with Mark Chamman from Wunch. Looking at some of your text this Thursday morning Stephen Noritch said Scotland forty first in the world loses by a few goals to Brazil, fifth in the world. It's not really a shock is it? Haiti was the more disappointing result. Should have taken the opportunity to get a few goals. Thank you, Steve for your message. Pete in Morea said one goal against Haiti isn't worthy of the knockout stages. So a lot of pressure on Scotland with regards to that Haiti result. David James . Yeah, I think that's a great point with regards to the positioning, but this is a gradual slide starting from that Haiti game to the Morocco game. Again, what I haven't really heard from the callers at the moment is when you think about these defeats, they both started very early, seventy seconds in the Morocco game , and they were both avoidable . And therefore is Scotland's situation brought upon them selves or is it just down to as the text was there for the quality of the opposition ? Okay, oh eight five nine nine six nine three Scotland fans give us a shout this morning England fans as well Thomas T ukel who, does he go with against Panama? Sweating on the fitness of a couple of players, Decklam Rice being one of those. Where'd you go with this England side against Panama? Well, we really want to just go out. Open up the engine a bit, score a couple of goals, happy days. Everyone's happy on Saturday evening. Plus what have you made of the tournament on a whole? How much of it have you watched? How have you been able to fold it into day to day live? Have you been taking five live to bed with I know a few people who have the old BBC sounds app, but what have you been doing to make this world cup work for you? Have you been out there? What experiences experiences of the tournament have you got ? Are you one of those Scotland fans that was lucky enough to be out there enjoying it? It looked absolutely incredible. Oh wait, oh eight , nine zero nine, six, nine, three, with you for another twenty three minutes. Richard, good morning . Good morning. How are you? Yeah, I'm well, thank you. Mate, morning after the night before , talk to me what are you thinking about that Scotland performance ? Well , first of all, you can even be passing the ball oon in a six yard box with people like you know, Junior behind you . You know, what the hell are they doing? You know, he made one mistake in his one milk and it's something which need to have happened, you know So that was the first thing Then it could have been two nill with pretty much the same thing, but as it happens it was disallowed. I mean, I got back to nineteen seventy four and I think the last slide that was on Peter was talking about Billy Brenner missing that goal against Brazilia did it hit his shin and it went right wide and these things happen Scotland they haven't had all the luck in the world but this time they 's squared on their shoulders, you know . Whether we get through now is less slightly less than fifty fifty. It's not impossible. And we've got we've got a fair chance, you know But. you know, we haven't played well . You know, McGinn Ferguson, you know, people that should have played better haven't, you know , so it's a hard one, isn't it? What can you see? Rit, Richard, did you stay up to watch your game? I did, I did. I was ready. And I thought I actually thought we had a weak chance. You know, I thought we maybe could if we lost one nail that wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world, you know? It's a it's a totally different system this year. You got they've squeezed in for eight teams into twelve groups, top two go through and you got teams really like Carraso and Cape Vadiokay with Cleveland and Spain or twenty seven shots on go, you know, they squeeze the nail now , but you know , you , you know, they they kind of they kind of there's too many teams in there, I think anyway. So from that point of view, yes, we got a chance who are we going to play next so it might be Jeremy if we finish that, but you know , is it Scotland's but luckily they haven't played very well? They haven't played very well. Can I just touch on something you said there, Richard, which I found really I find fascinating. So the Cape Verde, Spain game we talked about and again, this is the Minnows versus the Giants. They park the bus, the goldie had a worldy fair enough, they get away with anil Nill. If in four days time or three days time Scotland goes through and they draw Germany , would you accept apart from celebrating the fact that you forgot your first knockout, would you accept a Cape Verdie park the bus and just hope the Angus gun or Gordon has the game of their life and you end up losing on penalties let's say or give it some neg ativity at the end. Would you accept that? Or would you rather they try and play and end up getting beat three mil like they did? Absolutely, absolutely. I'd rather they play if they put the boss behind and they lost well lost, you know, penalties no, that'd be embarrassing. No, I wanted to go out and play. If they lose three nail, they lose three nail but it won't be want to try and they got you go out there and they got to express themselves and play properly, you know? I love . I love that. You know, I'd rather I'd rather they lost three nail with a heads held high, you know, we, you know, a few shots on goal, you know, they play well rather than, you know, embarrassing to go out, you know , on penalties or a late one no definitely when they express themselves and people . And that's what they haven't done. They really haven't. You know, they remember seventy eight. Now seventy eight was a year where Scotland I thought really did have a chance of getting a good run in the World Cup there. But they messed up against his hand, drew one hole and had to beat Holland three by three kid goals. We shame yell did you, you know, we all remember actually goal and I have it, you know . So yeah, but they that day they played, you know, they lost three to and they played and they played, you know, that's what we wanted to do if they do get through, not this negative. They have been very negative this World Cup . I don't know whether it's Clark's fault, I don't know. I think they've been a little bit of rabbits in the headlights this time . So yeah , do you think they've been pushed by the fans momentum by the fact that the hunger from the nation is so, so evident to be at the World Cup, the desire to be there after such a long time and what the fans are going to bring. Do you think that sort of push the side on a bit no Scotland No party kind of thing? You listen to the bagpipes, they bring the atmosphere. It's incredible. I think maybe that puts a bit of pressure too much pressure on them to be fair, you know? I mean, when they when they sung the National Anthem, you could hear Scott and it was made a hair bucket hair on a bucket next down and then, but I think when there is all that pressure from the country and they've got like thirty thousand fans out there . You know, it is a lot of pressure and that might have worked against them, you know , sometimes it does work the other way and I think it did with scott this and time . Great call. Thank you so much . Richard who's given us a call this morning five nine nine six nine three David, let me just read through some of the texts because they're flying in right now on eight five B as a dear six Scotland should just pack their bags and head home. It's embarrassing to seek to qualify for the knockout stages for finishing third and losing two of the group matches. The problem is the easy ride that Clark has afforded from the media up in Scotland . He's so negative and has his favorites that he simply won't drop. Sad fact is that we're not good enough. Best Scottish squad in my lifetime was Mexico eighty six and even then we couldn't qualify. The whole structure of Scottish football needs to change from grass roots up and it may take forty or fifty years . Stop selling all of our best talent to England for the youngsters to sit on the bench and not make the grade in the Premier League. Thanks. That's from B. Thank you, B for your message. Add another message in saying I find it weird that we took five strikers and none of them were McBurney, but also he hasn't played for us in ages and wasn't very good when he did. I think it's massively underestimated how much of an impact Billy Gilmore missing the tournament has been getting injured so close to it starting will obviously have an add an impact on his teammates but more importantly he's the only metronomic midfielder in the squad great phrase who can speed up or slow down a game's temper if you need him to McDominate, McGinn, Ganon Doke are all moments players, but none of them control the midfield. That's been a massive problem for Scotland in all three games. That's from Zavi, you than fork your message. May eight five eight keep them coming in. Um eight five nine six nine three Josh. Good morning. Morning, how every morning, David? How are you? Good morning. Yeah very well. Thanks Paul. Where you go, sir . Yeah, so we're calling for some realism here, I think. You know, we've had a really tough group there with two of the top ten man nations . Stylistically, it's not been brilliant. Functionally against Haiti, it was brilliant because it was all about three points . The Haiti game was the cup finally in many respects. People are forgetting that actually in the second half against Morocco they rolled the sleeves up, had a goal, arguably the better side and probably should have had the penalty but, you know this is hyperfective and spe aking. So we're dealing with the facts. We weren't good to go last night from the minute get go, but we are playing against Brazilian Vinistrius Junior. David I want to ask you about Andrew Scumplaying he isn't getting much football at the forest , you know , the same goals for a goalkeeper as any other possession. You know, you have to be playing games, don't you in order to be ready for a tournament like this . Jonathan it's a really good question and I suppose obviously with the with a second goal, that question becomes a bigger question because there was a situation where Angus could have probably done something else and Venetius wouldn't have scored a second . I don't I think it's more about the quality of games as opposed to the number of games . England have a situation with obviously Jordan Pickford playing regular in Premier League regular for England. That's not a problem. But the number two , you would ask a question would Henderson be a better option than James Trafford. James Trafford having played in cup finals, you would argue is used to that pressure. So going back to the Angus Gun thing , he played he made some really good saves yesterday. He played one of the wind was unbelievable. Yeah . So you got to accept every now and again it's not going to be perfect possibly the second goal, but I think he is also playing behind the defense and both the goals have come and he's had nothing to do with them. The first goal against Morocco, the first goal against Brazil last night. So it's not his fault what's going on in front of him. But then the question as a bigger question Jos,h is, are the guys in front of me thinking I've got a guy who's not playing enough minutes behind me and putting a bit extra extra nerve on him. You watched the game last night, Josh, yes? Yeah, yeah, of course it did. Okay. Sorry, not to go there was the caller before he didn't . But the do you think do you think Scotland tried to play too much? And the reason I'm asking this question, when Morocco played Brazil , for the first twenty minutes, Morocco tried to show Brazil how skillful they were. They were doing stepovers, flicks and all this stuff. That first six minutes of the Scotland game last night, the Scottish players were doing back flicks, whatever, little tricky passes and it was that essentially led to the first goal through a mistake. Do you think they tried to play too much football at the beginning? Well, the fans were calling for that change in style . They were calling Clark for being negative and you know, the usual stigma that gets attached to Stevie . So you know, he tried to change it. He started with Ben Gamen Dolk bit more of an attacking lineup that went to four at the back rather than five and all that Kenny McClean could step in and make it a five when they' defreendant. Well it was all about the start of the Morocco game as well, David, you know , you can see the goal so early. The game plan flies out the window and you're chasing the game against teams like that. So they're architects their own downfall to an extent the actual quality of that offensive unit you spot on mate. I mean you played that position at international level. You understand that, you know , you need better players than that from a goalkeeper, you know in isolation he's made some really good saves but that but that gets all up by the volume of goals he's conceded and the swapiness of it as well . You know, I think the midfield unit for Scotland is the best position on the park. I think that position alone could rival the England team. The actual players have got in there, but the games are won both boxes, David they're not scoring enough goals and they're a bit leaky in the back and that's a bit of a recipe for the disaster, isn't it really when you when you look at that? Yeah, I mean do you feel frustrated again, you look at last night and the amount of chances created in the last five, ten minutes of the game. The penalties we talked about in the Morocco game where you mention wereed in the Moroc c ganame. Do you feel a little bit frustrated that that wasn't the start of the game or that kind of energy and temporate? I mean, if you're going to lose three nail this what frustrated me watch it last night. If you're going to lose free nail, lose free nail by trying to score first , not three nil by making mistakes and allowing them into the game. And yeah, how did you feel about that ? I mean the game's being gone for me, David, the little slight frustration was the eighty game, you know , I spoke about the great things about that getting three points. That was what every Scotland fan wanted, but the actual style of it and the way that it was a one mill victory, you know, you're talking now about goal difference. And yeah, people are saying, you know, we could have kept the margin down last night, but you know, you play one of the highest stacked highly resourced teams in the competition. I'd probably go the other way in saying that hey gamers should have kept kept the foot on the throttle instead of defending in that in that second half, we're hanging on against them. And yeah, they're not a bad outfit. Let's not let's not get this wrong day that you know, they've actually shown that they're a good side. But just small margins like that could ultimately mean that we don't qualify. I'm optimistic that we are going to, I think there's enough teams for us that might drop points, but you know, you know, you know, like relying on other people to try and get your outcomes and things like that. And you know you know and I know David, especially you as a professional. The bird in the arms better than two in the bus, surely. Josh Josh We've got a run. Thank you so much for the court. nine six nine three ten minutes more of six hundred six to come before we hand you over to Adrian Chiles, get your calls in Scotland fansy messages as well on eight five A. Let's talk to Michael who is in Devon. Good morning . Hello , David. Nice to meet you. David you've only got sort of ten minutes to run so I'll be as precise as I can . The current World Cup didn't capture my imagination before it started . And unfortunately, I think those sentiments have been borne out by the fact that I thought that our players and most footballers throughout the world played an indecently obsessive amount of football . So I think therefore they are not physically fit to go from one tournament onto another tournament, etc . And I think I think the current format is bordering on the reject ive . I mean, forty eight teams ing in three countries , the amount of travel , the basic club supporter doesn't get the opportunity of watching it . And it's a money making machine. I mean, infantino is clearly obsessed with the having a relationship with Trump and everything . And I think it just sends a utterly wrong message . And I can go back to the to the sixties when we had the Bobby Wars, the Bavi Charts , the USabios . Arguably the greatest World Cup match that I record was Brazil and Italy. And I don't think David the Football that is being produced over there now even will hold a candle we were privileged to watch in hour yeah, it's a great point. I mean, big shout out to Devon. I used to live there, so respect for that . Just going on about the format. I have to agree with you, Michael. And this is one of the things I was asking to call us today . Scotland fans are having to wait for four days, three, four days to find out whether or not they've got to stay in well, they basically stay in the states hoping that they're going to be staying for a bit longer. Forty eight teams, I love the football because it's not the forty eight teams fault that they're in this tournament , but the fact that there's forty eight teams by the end of this group stage will have thirty two teams still left in and thirty two teams are what the last tournament was made up of exactly two weeks it's not yet two weeks to get to a knockout stage with the same amount of teams as the tournament before. I think that side of it is really bad. There's even talk of expanding it . How are we going to live with that sort of football? But when it comes to watching a football mica, I've got to say the interesting thing that you're making about injuries, I haven't seen anywhere near as much injuries as previous tournaments. And I think that might be down to the hydration advert tactical break. The other thing is and this is what I was going to say to him, what I'm loving at the moment and it's almost like one of these Japanese animes . The big boys are turning up. You have Messi who sees someone score a couple of goals and thinks I'll score three, flexes his muscles, scores a couple more, Harland , all the big names for all the fans of goalscorers like Venice yesterday's on four goals. They all seem to be doing it. Harry Caine, everyone seems to be scoring. So Panama look out because Harry needs to flex his muscles. Rob is in Colchester. Good morning, Rob. Good morning, guys. Yes. Part of it for a project worker who works with fifteen year old adolescents who are a pain and neck, but is it worth trying Rashford on the left and leaving Gordon off for a bit. I mean, I like Gordon, but he hasn't really performed. We're going to get the same low block of Panama as we had in the last match on. I just think maybe that's a change. Also Contour, is he really performed? So I don't know. Can we play Stones and Gay in the same scene? Rob, your opinion is as valuable as anyone else and we're grown for what you're doing. Mark is right , I mean I just question it and I don't want to contradict myself to what I said to Michael there. I think a lot of clubs or a lot of teams may be bringing players in who have injury concerns to start with as opposed to them being injured playing so many minutes and I think Rashford is falling into that category where he's got he hasn't got ninety minutes in him necessarily at the moment but I think it's a matter of time before Rashford is going to start games playing on left not because of Gordon necessarily not being up to the level or playing the performance that we need, but I just think the Marcus Rashford looks hungry. Every time he gets on, he looks hungry. David is a squat is brought in for rotation, isn't it? I mean, yeah, you don't bring a squad in just play the same sort of eleven to fourteen players per game. It's about rotation and it's time for the Marcus Rashwoods to get some game time five nine nine six nine three is our number to dodge looking at some more messages we have had in Oh Alex has said Ree Scotland the Down Mister Clark must go and to hell with his new contract. I reckon our goalkeepers complete more passes than any other player. The obsession with knocking it around our own box is dumb and he never solved our striker issue for years. Do you know what yesterday? I was watching the game or last night I was watching the game. They were knocking around their own box. I went to the freezer, got an ice lolly, come back and they were still knocking around their own box. And I thought, hey, I could have done something else in that time. Anyway, that was me, not Alex by the way. Sticking with Adams and Dykes for so long was criminal. Other teams just let our poorer players keep the ball at the back and simply wait to pants. That is from Alex. Jeff Inhove, good morning sent hier just looked at the article on the BC Sport website that you mentioned, setting out what results Scotland need to enable them to progress must be the world's biggest ever accumulator Jeff from Hope. You know what, Jeff, you are bang on. Go and check that piece out on the BBC Sport website. It lays everything out with regards to Scotland, all the permutations, how it all needs to fall. The final word of six hundred six this morning goes to Michael in Belfast. Good morning, sir. Good morning. How you? Yeah . I just want to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the entertainment factor of the World Cup and especially how well some of the minnus had done Kape Birdie following up a marbus back to the wall , Nil Nill's draw of Spain were really enterprising and we're actually the team looking to win the match in the two olds roll with Uruguay. And they have a wonderful chance of progression. I think their last game was against Saudi Arabia . And last night South Africa shock and South Korea as well, progressing through to the Block Eight Stage for the first time ever in the World Cup . And I'm really looking forward to Japan I was impressed with them and their build up their friends with Scotland and England before the World Cup. And I think they're a team to watch . I'm looking there if they do for any second in their group . They'll be played in Brazil . So yeah, I know there's been a lot of negative negativity leading up to the World Cup. But as far as the football so far , I've seen what have seen is that being quite impressed . Fantastic, Michael. Who wins it ? Predictable France . I love England to get through, but I have a dread. Yeah, I think the heat the heat will be one of the biggest obstacles for England . To be fair, it is hotter in France now than it is in England, so they might be able to advance The Scots last neighbour who knows clearly locked the mace they may squigg through, but yeah yeah, Do you feel Michael with every tournament there are question marks around the political situations the motives every tournament. You look at it Qatar, everyone enjoyed that Russia. People enjoyed that every tournament. And now once you get into the football whistles blowing and that we all forget about it. I have a lot of misgiveness with regards what's going on outside of the poo ball, but as far as the poo ball goes Yeah, I've been I've been quite quite well surprised so far . I totally agree with you. I mean, that was my my thing, Aaron. I didn't like the format. I don't like the format, but I love the football. Don't we all like Michael? Yeah, where Michael comes in and says our enjoyable even if he doesn't think England will win it , thank you for that Michael. Michael, thank you so much for getting in touch this morning. Thank you for listening and thanks for all your calls this morning. Thank you to you, David James as well for joining us. Your next chance to have your say on six hundred six is with Chris Sutton and Alistair Bruce Bull this Saturday from half past six next up on five live. It is Adrian Charles six hundred six
