Welcome to Ny five Mac Daily for Wednesday, june seventeenth, twenty twenty six I'm your host Chance Miller We are sponsored this week by Back Blaze Leading off today, IOS twenty seven's new Siri AI is a huge upgrade from the old experience also took longer than expected to arrive Last week, following the WWDC keynote, Apple held a seri and Apple intelligence focused tech talk with members of the press One of the participants of the talk was Mike Rockwell who took over leadership for Siri just last year provided some new context around why Siri AI took longer than Apple had hoped to ship He said, quote Last year, we had actually built a first version of this that was sort of incremental on top of the original serory and we had it working But we didn't feel it was really delivering on the vision and the experience that we wanted to do We also had a design that required much more extensive changes, and we decided to go with that So we went back and we rebuilt Siri from the ground up, literally tore it to the ground, rebuilt it from the ground up top of the incredible Apple Foundation models. It allowed us to build a profoundly more capable Si So based on Rockwell's comments, it sounds like Apple's original plan might have delivered some AI upgrades for Siri, but it wouldn't have been the full featured revamp that IOS twenty seven enables eararly indications are that Apple made the right decision But we'll know for sure as we spend more time with the new Apple intntelligence and Siri features in IOS twenty seven Next up today, IOS twenty seven also focuses heavily on bug fixes and performance improvements across key system apps One of the most notable examples of this is the Messages app, where IOS twenty seven fixes three of the most frustrating bugs First, Apple says that failed messages will automatically retry sending in IiOS twenty seven There have been countless times where you hit send on a message, swipe up and go back to your iPhone's home screen then realized later that the message you thought you sent had actually failed In IOS twenty six and earlier, this required going back to the messages app and manually tapping on the read tryry button. In IowOS twenty seven, that will now happen automatically in the background. Second, Apple says that IOS twenty seven enables continuous sending of photos, videos, and texts in the messages app This fixes a frustration that's likely familiar to most iPhone users. You send a photo, it gets stuck, and a blue progress bar lingers at the top of the conversation Until that photo finally goes through, any additional messages you send are effectively held up as well In IOS twenty seven, that bottleneck is gone Each message gets its own progress bar and is sent independently So a stuck photo won't prevent subsequent texts, photos or videos from being delivered Finally, IOS twenty seven also improves messages syncing across devices Apple says that conversations will sync more reliably between things like iPhone, iPad and Mac making it less likely that you'll switch from your iPhone to your Mac and find messages missing, delayed, or out of sync We are sponsored this week by Back Blaze As summer travel season kicks off, if you're traveling with your MacBook, you're probably carrying your digital life with you iCloud keeps your files in sync across devices and Time Machine protects you locally But what if your laptop is lost or damaged while traveling Do you have an off site backup setup Blaze runs automatically and creates a separate backup of your Mac in the cloud even including external drives You set it up once and you're set iCloud for Sync, time machine for local backup and back bllaze for offs site protection Try it free at backblaze d. com slash nine to five Mac and get twenty percent off with code nine to five daily My thanks to Back Blaze for sponsoring the show. In others today, a new Bloomberg report details three major new products from Apple coming in late twenty twenty seven The twentieth anniversary iPhone A second generation foldable iPhone and AirPods with built in cameras First, Mark Germman reports that Apple's camera equipped AirPods are scheduled to launch in late twenty twenty seven product was initially slated to be released this year. but was pushed back due to Apple intelligence and Siri delays As a refresher, these airPods are expected to have cameras in both the left and the right earbuds The cameras, however, won't be used to capture photo or video. Instead they'll serve as the eyes for Siri and will capture the environment around a user in low resolution to provide world context in conjunction with Siri and Apple intelligence The AirPods will also include a small LED that will turn on when visual data from those cameras is being fed to the cloud Alongside the airPods with cameras, Bloomberg reports that Apple is on track to launch an all new iPhone lineup Headlining the new iPhone lineup in twenty twenty seven will be a twentieth anniversary model. that will have a nearly edge to edge display The design will also feature curved glass that wraps around the sides The first iPhone was of course released in two thousand seven So the twentieth anniversary iPhone in twenty twenty seven is meant to be Apple's most ambitious ever in celebration of that anniversary. According to Germman, this iPhone will be available in two models that are similar in size to the iPhone eighteen Pro and iPhone eighteen Pro Max So that would put them at roughly six point three and six point nine inches Bloomberg also says that Apple will launch a second generation foldable iPhone in late twenty twenty seven Both the anniversary and second gen foldable models are expected to run on a new A twenty one chip that's built on a two nanometer fabrication process urrent iPhone chips are made on a three nanometer process, and anytime Apple reduces the space between transistors, it comes with benefits to both performance and efficiency Then in twenty twenty eight, Apple's highest end iPhones will reportedly be powered by the A twenty two chip, which will use a new one point four nanometer production technology. More emminently, of course, Apple will announce both the iPhone eighteen Pro and iPhone eighteen Pro Max later this year powered by the A twenty pro chip foollowed by the standard iPhone eighteen and early twenty twenty seven, powered by the base A twenty chip. The first generation iPhone fold coming later this year is also expected to be powered by that A twenty P processor That wraps up another episode of Night to five Back Daily As always, you can find all of the latest Apple news on nine to fiveMac. com Follow along with me on threads at Chance H Miller And we'll be back tomorrow for a new episode of ninetine to five Mac daily.
