iPhone 18 Pro leaks, AirDrop security, and iPhone Fold orders increase, on the AppleInsider Podcast — Jul 3, 2026 — starts at 0:00
Huge leaks about the iPhone eighteen Pro, AI features and Apple Created stududio. and apparently your iPhone may be affecting Your love life I am not judging Welcome to the Apple Insider podcast I'm William Gallgh. Our sponsor this week is Scribe more about that later. unless of course, you're a subscriber to Apple Insider plus and more details about that. later, particularly in reveal, what we're coming up with, what we're going to talk about this week in that subscriber only edition I am joined though by Wesley Hillyhard as ever. And well two things to note. if you're watching a video and you're try to wear which is which, Wes is the one who looks relaxed and on holiday, but's here anyway. and I'm the one that the new Fal Cut Brok can make look evil No. Did that work If you're listening in audio, it definitely didn't. But let's find out later whether or not Such a useful feature is there. Listen, Whas Thank you for coming back for your holiday, J just have a nata. Is it because of all the exciting apple? Is are you having a boring time It's only I'm only taking a couple days off, but honestly, a lot has happened in the one day I took off that it's really funny that that was the day so much that it's hard to keep up with it. There's there's talk of new AI devices, there's Tal of M seven. I mean This rumor cycle can't seem to take a break, honestly. No it I'm upset about the M seven though. Because the M six here Here in the UK, the M six is a motorway from roughly where I am to roughly London, so you know I used to use it a lot and I identified with the M six. know I guess the BBC down the M six a couple of times a week. Leave before it got light, back after midnight. it was great. And what does the M seven do? I have no idea. but apparently Apple's skipping some M six is and going into M sevens and I can actually tell that you you don't have the hang up of motorways that I do. you actually understand What's going on. So how about we deal with that first? The rom is about the M sevens, what's not getting it, what is getting it? We should do a list What should we look out for with H seven Before we get there, I did want to mention Apple Insider Plus, we're going to be talking about Devices that could either replace or augment iPhone thanks to AI. We saw that first wave of AI devices a few years ago the rabbit and the humane pen. Oh ye. And now we are going to discuss what is being coubled up now by these competitors with Apple and other companies want to talk a little bit more about that world AI in general, there's a lot going on in that space William, I'm going to hold it to you to remind me of the four hundred four media piece on not four hundred four I'm actually thinking of David Jorgenson. He's a video guy on Blue Sky who did a video recently starring Tim Cook. so Right. You're going to hold me to a thing on a site you're not sure of that I haven't said I won't let you down. I promise the second time. But yes, we're going to be discussing all that on Apple and Cider pllus. So if you are a paid subscriber, sick around for that, of course, you also get the show ad free. So that's all there. But first, M six, M seven, whereere are we from The sounds of it It looks like that this RM apocalypse that we're running into has forced Apple to change course on its roadmap It's it's going to have to Release the M six base chip and that's it. No M six Pro, M six Max, M six Ultra So hang on, does that mean inside Apple There are some poor designers is sweated over this thing And it's never going to be this is like working in television Okay. but you were saying we're carrying straight on Yeah. so those well those chips basically would require higher RAM Odd ps and making them incredibly expensive So I think Apple is just going to and because we are later in the cycle this time Um We're probably going to wait. Now there is some discussion. Did Apple actually not plan these chips? or was it always the plan to only have an M six option I don't think that's the case. Rumors always indicated Apple was working on the higher end chips here previous rumors placed the Quad M six Ultra in this generation So for it to not happen here shows that this indndustry shift is quite a big one. U industry people are already saying it's going to get worse, if not twice as worse in the next couple of years. So pricing That's why Apple went so hard on the pricing last week because they're trying to build in the prices for what is to come as well Why do you say we're later in the cycle? U I mean, I don't pay attention to the cycles. Is there an obvious delays or are they significantly far behind where they would be normally o I mean, M five launched and not to every Mac. We're missing an M five Mac mini. for example, and that's a big one that should be updated M five Pro M five Max, I believe, came out later than expected If only because Apple had a generation where they released all three chips at once And now we've saw a slowing down in how Apple approaches this. It could just be cyclical. it could be due to the chip shortages. It's hard to say, but whatever is causing this, this is the result Um We're going to have to wait and see what happens next. But rumors are saying We're going to see M six this fall, even though the M five cycle isn't complete and'll never U I guess they're never going to announce another M five product because they're going to skip straight to M six for all these products that needed M five And in the spring We're going to get M seven, M seven pro, M seven max This is where it's getting odd I'm not sure how much I believe these rumors. This is all for other early But this is what they're saying is going to happen. We're going to get M six in the fall and a few macs that need it No pro, no max. and then we're going to get the M seven family all in the beginning of next year All super expensive because of their ram pairings. So We'll see, I guess. But justm' I'm trying to put together two different rumors, which is possibly just a waste of time really. but M seven MathBook Pro early twenty twenty seven is the thing that I was reading this week. but a few days ago, maybe last week it was the The touchs screen, MacBook Pro, the OLED touchcreen, MacBook Pro will be at s twenty twenty six after all, but it will still have , I can't remember if it's M five or M six, but it wouldn't be a new processor. the only difference would be the touch bire So if that's true, if that is inacurate report and that means And one day in December We get the M five. thank you. M five MacBook Pro with a touchs screen. and then in January or February, whatever time it is, we suddenly get the M seven which might not have the touch screens, which becomes The thing we want I think that the supply chain is in disarray. I think that We're not getting accurate information right now It's really just you pretty much have to pay attention to what the sources are here Um I believe So okay, the M seven product cycle is from Mark Germman And so far, he's had a pretty good source on chip set stuff, right? If he ever talks about Apple Vision Pro, he's pretty much always wrong about that one But for whatever reason his chips set stuff has been accurate. So I'm going to say this seems accurate. so Direct from our reporting here. the low end MacBook Pro is going to get a new design language with an OLED touchs screen doue at the end of twenty six or early twenty seven That could debut with the M seven processor That's what's getting said here. So okay. Yeah. So the M six would be just for the like Mac Mini the Mac the the Macs that haven't got an M that are still an M four that need a new processor. Apple's going to go ahead and start phasing out the M five, move to M six on the low end. So maybe the MacBook error could even see an M six. But this new MacBook Pro that's already going to be high priced. It's got new components, a new design, OLE display, Apple can disguise some of that pricing fluctuation by saying, lookook, it's the new one. It's fancy U and throw an M seven in there and say, look, because it's the M seven, we can charge even more. It's the future MacBook. It's the MacBook of the future, just like the iPhone ten That could be their strategy here So We have to see M six before M seven. They're not going to go out of order. So I would say October, we'll see the rest of the Mac lineup updated with M six And then as early as January, we'll see this MacBook Pro. But I will note that this is also A delay, technically, at least an internal delay because previous rumors plac this touchscreen MacBook in the fall So this thing could get pushed back even further. The fact that it's an M seven now that we're talking about this I would say more like spring, if not later next year I'm going to place my bets now. This is a summer Mac next year Right? L And we're just now hearing about shifts in the supply chain We can't believe everything that comes from Mark Germman, right? Like he gets a lot of stuff wrong, especially recently Um, The way he hedges a lot of his rumors these days is Apple can change its plans. So I'm just going to go ahead and say Apple's not going to be hard set on these plans. There's too much going on between October and February of next year. We're also talking about the delayed foldable I begin med production. We're also talking about an iPhone air two d in the spring and All of this on top of chip shortages, there's gotta be give here and Apple can't just release everything now. likeike that's that's not what the economy is going to allow Right, you can't trust Mark. Who can you trust anymore? You said there that Apple won't go out of order. I take it you mean we won't go five seven six. but there was famously no iPhone nine because they skipped from the eight to the ten U Whyn't they just give up on the six? Who cares about the six anymore? Chuck it out All that work, throw it away, move on. G on Rple. Yeah. I believe the chip process is already being built and underway. If anything, the M six could be what's passed to Intel later down the road as a as because it's so focused on being the low end chip set Intel Fabs, that process that it's working on could be directly tied to an M six six. I'm not one hundred percent on that, but that sounds like something Apple could do there. trying to give the best fabs in Taiwan and China the M seven. family and then the M six just be everything else. That's why this rumor is suggesting We could see iPad Pro in the spring Well, funny, you should say that because I didn't want to ask you about this because I bought an iPad Pro last November so we don't need any updates, it's fine It's great, but yeah, the same conommentant rumor was that they would be four iPad Pro models and I presume that means two sizes It's green t maybe. Oh yes. o okay. so two screen sizes cly worth for o okay. So what have we new about them Dk S seven okay Yeah vap for chamber cooling Okay, I got to say my iPad never gets hot my iPhone does at the moment, but not my iPad Ise of Is vapor chamber cooling Big thing Oh, yeah, no, this this is huge for iPhone and it's definitely going to be a big deal for iPad when it comes. Okay, I mean, I'm still on an iPhone sixteen Pmaxis why it's getting very hot, particularly to the beaters. You can't believe how hot this thing is getting. You're on one that has vapor cooling, so basically you're fine You don't care. It's alright. yeah. That's how it works. Okay. I mean the iPhone doesn't get hot. I mean the camera island might get a little bit of heat on it, but the way the vapor chamber cooling works is it evenly distributes the cooling across the back of the phone and syns it to parts of the case. so that way you're not getting a giant hotspot like you used to. Ver intensive operations might heat up a little bit in certain spots, but It's just not the same anymore. Pad though while It's less necessary because you're not holding it usually unless you're using it in tablet form. if it's in a keyboard or surface area as well. Surely that makes a difference. I mean, iPad can hold itself pretty well now, but the vapor chamber will just make it more efficient. It'll increase peak operating processes Faster, longer at higher temperatures It can o. So that will be better overall Okay well Apple always finds a way to make something better, but I realized I don't have a thin clue how it works. Is it something that adds a lot of weight or bulk It's an empty it's a piece of vacuum. There's nothing it's air. So the it's But I'm kind of guess around it, there might be like a holder or something or met. which could be taking up some bom. It's the, you know, it's the basically the iPad existing Chassis is just going to have a little thin skin over it and then they inject it with a I'm talking molecules of water here U And I did not know it was that small. Okay. Yeah. like someone opened it up I think a drop of water came out. likeike it's it is not much water, but it It's basically a mist inside of there. Well, I won't say water. it's not water The vapor chamber cooling, I believe is some sort of like combination of things to allow high heat conduction U Anyway, it's not much liquid in there But so it doesn't add any weight, but it is an increase in efficiency in transferring heat from the processor to the case of the device, which is what you want Okay And and this will be an M the I don't think the processor was named specifically. This sounds like an M six Um The reason why we're talking about M seven is okay, this is even funnier From my understanding, again, this this is so out of left field. It's hard to really say This is my understanding We're going to get the M six in the fall and that's going to be in the Base MacBook Pro the Mac Mini Stuff like that. Things that get the base model M chip And then in the spring, we will get the M seven pro M seven max, no base M seven. If I'm reading this correctly Right kindind of like how we had an M four P max And then we had an M three ultra, right? So I was following this until very recently. Okay, yes, it does So it's confusing, but it makes sense. So there won't be an M seven and an iPad because I believe I might be getting this wrong, so please people email me correctly This rumor hit literally while I was away, so I'm catching up with it mostly live. But my understanding from my from what it sounds like because I don't think Apple is going to come out with an M six in the fall and an M seven in the spring. I think it's an M six in the fall in an M seven pro Max instead of an M six pro Max. We're skipping the base generation basically Will there ever be an M seven hard to say Apple maybe doesn't need to have a base M seven because the M six is taking up that job And then Late next year, early twenty eight, we could see the M eight and the whole family arrives at the same time MA MA pro M eight max. And theoretically We could be seeing the apocalypse slow down a little bit by then. So I feared you were going to go into M nine then and I thought's no we're going too far. No. Okay, I would understand all of the sim is written down and I'm not trying to pretend that I don't follow it. It's just I realize after a bit processes stop interesting me and I'm more interested don't the application in the device what they actually use. And one of the reasons I'm glad you came back. Thankk you is to ask you things like that, but another one There's none one of these things where I thought of you immediately I heard this news. There is now absolute certain confirmation Again that the iPhone fold is coming in September. Absolute total definite. ye, all that stuff This time, Nic Asia is saying that Apple' so into this that they're ordering more be ready for the rest of the year. up from an estimated seven to eight million iPhone folds, T million ifolds for the rest of twenty twenty six. Now The only thing that varies more than is it coming or is it not is how many are they being made or how many are they not? There have been figures before that said said eleven million. So is this an increase? is it a decrease? I don't know But more people are saying more are coming when's the tipping point for you of their rights and It's going to be out in September I mean one I just need to hear that it's actually in mass production. Um, Apple can place orders all day, is it being built? That's the question. We don't know. There's nothing confirming it. Niay Asia here has some numbers about orders U and that's great. Apple can order all day long. If they can't build it. It doesn't matter what you order Um I know there's a thing Apple. very often adjusts its order numbers and every time it does people say I don't know, the iPhone aerir is a failure and It might be true, actually, but also it's equally possible that Apple is rearranging the furniture. so it's making more of this one and less of that and all this sortuff. Supply chain is a useal situation Yeah. Yeah It doesn't tell you supply chain, go home at nice and think I've got an order for ten million and then they go into lunch the next day and it's actually no. Six It's not a business I'd like to be in, but Okay, alongside this expectation of more There is also this expectation that this order is for twenty twenty six. So not a launch. list not a just get them ready, but actually to be made and sold in twenty six. If that's accurate at least bolsters The chances of it not only being announced but also shipping before the end of the year isn't it There will at least be five available in September. Right The thing is as far as we're aware, mass production has not begun And it's now July. We'll see. this is when mass production needs to ramp up for anything to be ready for September U The order number is irrelevant. I don't think they're going to sell ten million. Mike's under the impression, our editor, Mike Worth early, he He's under the impression that this is an initial order and they're going to add more later. I don't think they're going to sell ten million of these things This is such a niche product. It's gonna to start at two thousand five hundred dollars They'll be lucky to sell I don't know, five million at this point, but the Apple brand does carry a lot of weight. China loves their new devices and their new foldables. I think China is going to be heavily participating in this device if it does launch So I don't see an impossible number, but it's Well, they we' get at this China Tim Cook will have one, John Turnnis will have one. I'll have two, obviously. particularly they do in blue you get ye it could add up So if fact actually here's how much you could add up. Look what I did. lookook at the quality of information you get here. Our counterpoint research has estimated that U O the whole of twenty twenty six. By the end, Apple and the iPhone folder or whatever it's called will have accounted for twenty nine percent of all fooldable, smartphone sales. Now Counterwart does a lot of work and they're very good at publishing their methodology, but I don't happen to understand how they came to this figure I'm You would argue I think that twenty nine percent Of what is the issue? twenty nine percent of Europe ten is He his u So this is the thing to a bit through. Yeah, we're Okay We're not really seeing a lot of foldable sales Um It's increased over time, but increased from one to two to four is not really that big of a deal It is less than a percentage of the entire smartphone market in spite of being in the market for seven years now Apple coming in and taking thirty percent of o point one percent is really not much to talk about. Clearly Apple was going to own some part of this market. We've had this discussion before. This number actually isn't really that new. It's a new estimate, but it's one weve others have guessed at these foldable markets believes Apple is going to confirm that people want they're going to legitimize foldables And that Ale's basically going to save it When Apple enters this market, it will make the market boom because Everyone who can't afford the iPhone will go buy the cheaper Android versions And China's production lines have already begun preparing for this launch so that everyone in China can buy their version of an Android phone with an Apple logo on the back of it to say they bought the foldable iPhone for fifty dollars. If Apple doesn't launch on time or at all This market will have basically ate itself because it will have prepared for a boom that didn't come and it will knock a lot of companies out of business. So These investors, these analysts They almost need Apple to enter this market at this point. That's why we see so many contradicting messages. The people who don't have any money in the game are the ones saying I don't know if it's coming. The people who need this to happen are begging for it to happen and can't see a world without it because if it doesn't come, It will upend so many markets So every time I see numbers like this, you have to think of the source Niay Asia A lot of times they get so this is back to the ten million number, not counterpoints guess because it is a guess. It's a very good guess based on math, but it's still a guess Nica Asia's supply chain report though, they are good at getting information like this No context They're guessing at the context. Apple ordered ten million iPhones Does that mean they ordered ten million iPhones? My guess is they ordered ten million. Hinges But Is ten million Hinges orders ten million iPhones? or is that five million iPhones because they come in pairs. We don't We don't know what it means and Niay doesn't really color it that way and they they've been bad guessers in the past. goodood information, bad guessers. So We'll put the big disclaimer here that we put every time Mark German, the K Asia. fast, focus, digital. It doesn't matter who it is. Rumors or rumors They tend to be more wrong than right a lot of the time. We focus on what's right because it's the ones that happen A lot of them end up being wrong. F of the game this and that's the point This is fun. If you're making investments on this information, you're doing it wrong. Tue. It's just rumors funun to see if we can catch what they're doing in secret ahead of time too much stock into it. literally don't put stock into it I would point out that leakers know everything. It's just that Apple changes their mind and not the last moment with billions of dollars resting on each decision. So you know to be fair Lakers no better than. Did you see anyone? story from Apple pulling DMCA pulls of. Yeah. I'm intrigued about this because actually I was away when this happened as well. So the original thing was I knew about the tatle Lake had written about that, but then the The group that's clim to it are previously known for doing extortion for it, but usually that means they extort and they get money and then they probably release things anyway. I don't know what happened in this case, but suddenly data was out there and a lot of places were showing it, including video footage, I think it was of a drop test. Apple inssider didn't share that, wrote about it, explained what it was explained the provenance and that it was likely to be accurate, very likely to be accurate and wood't chare stolen were material certain in actually That the drop test was was iPhone seventeen and not an iPhone eighteen. Even so and the claimants were so Ice Universe posted this video that we didn't post because Well, first off, it was an iPhone seventeen. and second, it was secret video from Apple. And we were like, yeah, this is clearly not going to fly Um, So IC Universe claimed to his iPhone eighteen reporters ran with that I'm fairly certain from our sources, this is an iPhone seventeen. doesn't matter. It got taken down U because it's proprietary information We also saw a video of packaging iPhones like final inspections occurring and these employees wear like body cams, I suppose and the cameras capture this information. someome of that was in there So there's a lot of stuff in this dump of data from the leakers. They dumped it on the Dark Web and you know, it's accessible if you know where to find it. And we've been crawling through it. Nothing really like we shared what was we're sharing. We had the Tata Lka a couple weeks ago on Apple Insider. we broke that news more or less. Most of it was new from us and then suddenly these Ice Universe stumbles upon this video I guess, or does what it does. IC is actually pretty good. Ice Universe. they do Android leaks, but every now and then they sneak in with an iPhone leak, but Genally speaking that one is not flat out liar like some of the other ones are who try to take credit for other people's leaks I just think this one they got it wrong. And Apple put out a DMCA digital millennium copyright act takown notices on all of This is why I want to stop here because there are two pes. One is the interesting data and some not interesting data, but then also I canan't remember the last time Apple went to these steps to remove Somet got it. I mean, there have been stolen designs before. I'm sure there was, you know, unhappiness. There's an difference. They've gone for twenty Yeah. why? Okay, so yeah, there's a difference between me getting foootage of Avengers end game in a movie theater posting it. online, like on my Twitter which I guess still could get DMCA because it has footage in it of copyrighted material That's tricky. Let's be more specific If I walked into an iPhone factory and shot secret video of the factory and then handed it over to a journalist. That video is original and contains no copyright material. it contains secret material, but at that point That material is there and it can't really be touched because Unless it specifically contains very secret information and there's legal arguments here that Apple could make. They generally don't chase those things because they're usually grainy Sasquatch style videos U that you can't always confirm what's in it This video that was leaked online Pprietary privately recorded information owned by Apple That's the difference. O is there it's all theft But the takedown notices are coming because of the nature of the content. It belonged to Apple. It was never It wasn't secret bodycam footage or word of mouth, which is usually how we find out about these leaks. Apple doesn't go after leaks mostly because they are word of mouth, and they can just dismiss them as rumor. We don't talk about future products This episode is brought to you by Scribe Wes and I swap editing roles on this podcast, or more recently, when I had to train my replacement on a charity's magazine as fast as she and Wz were It still took a lot of time And I've now left the charity that was doing that magazine. So my replacement We'll have to train the next person and so on Finding a replacement, finding a successor. making sure more than one person can do the job is essential And it's often easy enough to find them. It's the time it takes to bring them up to speed. That's the problem. It's knowledge that is locked into each person's head and how you keep that even when they leave This is exactly what Scribe is built to solve. It's a workflow AI platform that captures what you do and automatically documents each step You don't have to write, you don't have to green shots You just do the job. H w how slash Apple Insider. And thank you to Scribe for supporting the Apple Insider podcast Except There have been There have been analogous cases before, and I'm trying to remember it was a MacBook Pro detailed blueprint design. And that was owned by Apple. That was not know I mean, there's allorts of things like we said there about theres trespass la,'s sorts of things, but evenven taking the who owns the original footage. Apple owned those blueprints, those got out. And I don't believe Apple pursued them quite as much. An argument I've heard is that the reason Apple is doing, I mean, I don't believe this, but this is the argument that I saw is Apple's mithered about this because it reveals there's basically nothing different in the next ihone Is that It's the iPhone seventeen anyway. So the the like this isn't an iPhone eighteen. They didn't take it down because it was an iPhone eighteen. They took it down because it was their private footage as far as as legal legally standing. This is there's a difference between Apple take putting out a cease and desist order. which is what you're talking about with blueprints or video footage. a team And a DMCA, the reason why they were able to use that is because it was owned footage from Apple. That's why they went that route. Okay. but No you say that. I hear that. I They've come in I'm not saying they shouldn't come in heavy handed. They just seem to come in unusually heavy handed with this number because of' it's the nature of the leak, right? Tat' First off How did this company get all this information? They don't they shouldn't be privy to half of it that was in this database leak But they're manufacturing these. I mean, they don't do all of it, but they do. They don't they don't need to have a anyway like That's beyond the point A lot of this stuff seems like it shouldn't have been there, but also the fact that it leaked at all is an embarrassment. It There's a difference between an entire database of information getting posted to the Dark Web from a hacking studio. and some guy's cousin telling him that he saw the blue iPhone on an assembly line and that getting posted on Weibo, right The nature of the leak is significant here and Apple wants to not only squash what got out, but prove like that it doesn't play around with this type of stuff. likeike T Todd the leak the leakers who leaked it don't get to benefit from this. so Well, let's just focus on two elements of the data that was leaked then because one of them, I don't know what it is, but it was to do with camera upgrades and you're the photographer I know that every year Apple will do something to make the cameras bests like it almost has to Um Do you was there enough in the lake to tell you What's different this year probably different and Is it something that you could care about The iPhone cameras are on a bit of a TikTok cycle Um, one year we're going to see big leaps on technicality like technical support and then we'll see software support the next year I This looks like it's going to be a basic upgrade to the main sensor jumping up in sensor type. This could indicate the variable in aperture sensor is coming. So there's not much going to be said here because We're looking at a sensor code name, Sony's IMX nine hundred three, moving to the IMX nine hundred five That doesn't really tell us anything other than it's getting a new sensor Um I doubt it'll change as far as megapixels go. We've heard rumors of Apple shifting to higher megapixel counts in the future. I don't think they're going to do that yet. I believe going to be a smaller camera year because we got significant jumps in camera performance in the last couple of years. So this might be a smaller year camera wise and a variable aperture is huge for pro photographers. but Oh for everyone else. Al I've actually asked you about this before And I came away you explained it to me, I understood it and I thought that actually does sound really good. But it goes totally out of my head for some reason. because I do more video than stills and I think it's more for stills. How can you get it into my head? What is a variable aperture and why should I care So Smartphone cameras have If you ever talk to a photographer about smartphone photography, They will tell you. It looks like it was captured on a smartphone. They don't even need to know. They can usually see it. The reason why is because Smartphone cameras shoot wide open. aperture, like it's it's it's a single set point. It's just Take everything in, everything's in focus variable aperture is like on a DSLR or something like that where you can control that F stop basically, not artificially like Apple does through portrait mode, but physically by literally turnurning the aperture up and down. Think of it how the so a lot of photography works, how your eyes work So you have all the names of things have left me But your pupil dilates to let more light in, correct the camera opens the shutter two light light in the same way. It's like you've seen a camera shutter before. it opens kind of this like penwel effect And then it closes by going the other direction uh to let light less light in. So if you're in a bright environment, you can really close that aperture to the point where you can Focus on a tiny little point. everythingthing else is out of focus And it creates this beautiful booca effect. and it can be really great for portraiture or you can choose to If it's a group shot, you need everyone's face to be in focus to open things up a little bit more, let more light in and focus on more of the area around you, right by using more of the lens itself. It's just more control over the photography. and I'll say again Just because I'm saying this on the fly, I might have reversed that because photography terms are often reversed open usually doesn't mean open the same way you might think of opening a door. Ignoring all that, the concept is the same. You're able to take in more or less light on command. This is where McGerman's pro camera widget feature might come into play by giving users the ability to add aperture control to the camera app once that is out Okay. I've realized I'm looking for reasons to upgrade to share No that's definitely under the. pro list But the model well, there's another part the only other part of the that interests me and I know it's got to interest me more than you because its do with the modem. And the difference is that you lot in the US are going to get that's right we're around, you're still going to getQualcom, Madams like you've had forever. The rest of us in the UK, where I am and around the world are going to get Apple's own C two modem. it seems unlikely that Apple is treating us in favour of the US, its home market. so is the se too a bit rubbish. compared to quot That what we're expecting gotot to be a contract here Oh right out This this there's so many things that could be going into this. It could be due to u Qualcom making the modems in the US and the percentage of parts being used in the iPhone being from the US. Or it could just be that because Apple had to reenter contract with Qualcom a couple of years ago They they have to use them and They can't just abandon Qualcomm in the middle of the contract Um Apple sells a lot of iPhones in the United States. and so maybe it just is a lower cost thing. There's so many there's so many reasons why this could be happening My only disappointment here is is it means that proprietary features tied to the C two won't be coming to the ProMax in the United States U What sort of things are those I'm forgetting off the top of my head, but there's at least two features if I remember correctly that are tied to the C two modem that you can do in the iPhone air U it has to do. Yeah, it's leaving me, but u There are exclusive features to it F the smoke Good and bad There's no chance this is finally going to mean Um MMA if I G outside the U.S. does if Apple C two Muran is all whizzy It doesn't matter. They could support it all they want. The towers aren't there globally. I just don't think it's going to happen It comm in way five G is kind of useless. You have to be within like eyeline of a tower. I'll move. Okay, Yes. Okay. A a brief moment's hope there Im Yeah Do want to get to a few things that kind of round up Th things are kind of quicky, but I did mention right at the start about the iPhone affecting your love life. Ill tell you what, let's just dismiss that in one go. There's a new study, the research says declining birth rate in the US is tied to the iPhone. and then when you lead through the report it eventually says or possibly not It's a bit By like that, but it's a fun read Yeah. also does make I read the whole thing, does make a single reference to Japan, but not to the fact that Japan's birth rate has been declining drastically for ages. so you know, some hol some query queriable methodology, but You know. Wells are interesting because I believe Korea has had this kind of protest movement from women basically Um purposefully lowering the birth rate and Japan has other issues because their workaholic environment prevents socialization, prevents birth rate. The United States has other issues. What's funny is I'll always have to point out like specifically to the United States The reason why our birth rate is as low as it is is because Um, likeike child marriage was down in the United States over the last thirty years I didn't know that. Yeah, so if you actually look at the statistics, birth rate for those, I believe, eighteen and up is somewhat flat, maybe a little down but it's a dramatic spike down once you get from eighteen and under, which is horrific to talk about, but that's where the biggest part of the numbers are coming from. and that's not because of the iPhone, that's because Society is moving beyond terrible things, hopefully. So Yes. the birth rates' down globally for many reasons across many different countries It's not the iPhone. It's just that was a silly like, it almost felt like a buzzfeed article, really Oh, that was harsh. I think it was the Apple Vision Pro that did it frankly.s that's the major significant impact Okay, I keep forgetting you're the Apple Vision Pro fan out of the two of us. I mean, I'm not against it, o. I am though a great fan of the Apple Watch. I had one right from the start, can't count how many I've had over the years. And I also can't count how many times over all of those years, we keep hearing that Apple is going to abandon the way it does the bands. I I ridiculous to focus on, but I love the way Apple designed Watchmands. slip in and out so easily. It' like that's how they should always all have been done. tyypical apple. find a way to do it Everybody cu is it excellent. but At least every two years there's been a well that's over They're going to do it a completely different way This time the room is back again, it doesn't seem to be any stronger than before, except it is tied to the claim that suddenly, possibly magically, The Apple watch will be much, much thinner and therefore toooo thin have this kind of Cas fastener buckle thing. I think you can hear the conviction in my voice there, Are you more persuaded than I am? It doesn't sound Right. I mean I guess if you want to change how the Apple Watch attaches, its bands They could go with this magnetic thing that it's been discussed many times before that Apple's working on a magnetic attachment system. That could be interesting for sure. I think pacemakers might have a question about this. right take that. Yes. Well, because right now you can buy an Apple Watch and put a silicon band on that doesn't require magnetic And I'm sure there are parts of an Apple watchatch you don't want to get close to a pacemaker. maybe. I'm sure it's electronically shielded enough though, that if you have a fluorellastom or band, that it's Totally fine. and Apple's definitely thought of that because Apple thinks of this of that type of accessibility all the time So I I don't think Apple would want to exclude the entire pacemaker population from buying an Apple Watch. So if the bands attach magnetically then you get into this problem of Is it going to be shielded when it's attached to the watch Can you shield it externally? So It sounds nice. How else would you attach it if not magnetically? The groove needs to be a certain width and length or else you're going to face ripping I've had bands rip. evenven though that's a fairly sturdy connector That area is the weakest part of the band because of the smaller area, surface area the band is connecting to, and it's a separate material that it attaches to. So depending on the band, it can just rip off or break subtly So Going thinner and smaller could lead to more breakages and problems I trust Apple to figure this out I have a feeling that even if we lose compatibility with old bands, there will be an adapter that won't be ugly the Apple will sell separately or include in the box for the first generation, which is something the Apple is apt to do I'm not that worried. If it comes, bring it. We've been waiting for it for a decade. If it doesn't, great, My watches are still compatible. Apple doesn't really have any reason to change the design of Apple Watch.' A mature product. It could look like this until they discontinue the product and I think that's fine Unless there is this thing that if they were able to make it slimmer, I mean, it's slim, but it's still Oh is a slimmer one would be nice. A slim one could be bigger and things I think it feels like it's wishful thinking that there'll be a redesign on that side and then the bands follow as a concombetant, therefore they would have to be. I guess we'll find out in September, which is Remarkably close The more I think about it Okay. there was something else that happened while you were away. So I think it's a technical thing that you will know better than I do but you may not be aware of. the security flawors in Airdrop Have you come across this story yet or can I fill you in go ahead and tell me a little bit about it because I heard about this and this is just another one of those things where It's such a perfect storm you have to do this. You have to be next to a person trying to take advantage of it and it's just It's not You knew already Yeah, that's basically the detail What can I even add to that? Somebody has to be within range, they can possibly get by it. Yeah, just I'll have a link to the article in it and you can read it if you're very, very bored. Don't bother reading it well if you're very worried, it'll reassure you, but it isn't worth worrying about whereereas No this probably isn't either. There is this discussion that Apple is planning to buy RAM. listed Chinese RAam suppliers and Yeah, I mean Combies are blacklisted for a reason, but I presume Apple's into it because they'd be cheaper. I'm thinking of cheaper good The big hack by Bloomberg. U Wh they said that Chinese companies were secretly hiding surveillance chips in every server And gathering all of the United States information to plan a secret war or it was such a dumb story.' they never officially retracted it. The guy who wrote it got promoted, like it's just awful. Oh no. There were two guys and they both got promoted. But also even when they first published it, the bottom of the article had a bit from Bloomke's own IT people saying We have these servers and we don't have any of these chips in it. That's the kind of Scare that we're dealing with right now. Okay, so Okay. the reason why these are blacklisted isn't because the chips are dangerous or going to spy on you. They could spy on you. technically I would hope that Apple has enough technical ability to find out if they are before using them. The reason why they're blacklisted is because the companies I believe it's two major distributors in China. I don't know their names. They're letters. do not know them. Um They are officially funded by the Chinese government and army So that that is the issue and that is why the United States blacklists them because they're state sponsored And the reason why state sponsored media is bad isn't because we're fund well partially is because we're funding their war machine, but partially because They can basically take government funds and subsidize the company and make them loss leaders and make them anti competitive by default. So If we start buying from these companies They could make them significantly less expensive and make us never want to buy from Taiwan semiconductor again because Tawan semiconductor is working off its own profits, not government profits. So basically China could through backdoor means legal in their country, could basasically subsid the entire subsidize the entire chip race and make it so it's so cheap, so inepensive that Everyone relies on them and abandons all other competition on the market because the government basically shovels money into it looking at you Intel, but that's kind of the problem that we're facing with these government sponsored things and Apples' are just saying, look We just need a way to get more chips. They have more chips Let us buy them Okay. We'll see what will happen with that. I'm just interested We haven't had a controversy corner in quite a while and yet it's still the case, always the case that politics and the law and technology are very blurry sometimes Yeah.'s knowe if you it's a note when you see it situation. I know when controversy corner is needed. It's pretty clear. That should not be a controversial topic to anyone listening It'sly it's inter problematic The whole reason of Contrpcyoron it was to just siled arr things, but still these things are not siloed They are part of everything we're dealing with cholog One thing I just want the government runs our world they are intrinsically tied, as you said There's something that I kind of want to get into and kind of don't. We've had a reasonably significant upgrade to Apple Creator Studio this week and I could geek out a bit on the Final Cut Pro st because the new auto mask is very nice. There's a new captioning thing, excuse me, a new subtitling thing which is different to captions. It's very interesting that here in the UK I thought America's had I think called closed captions, that was what we would call subtitles, but there's burnt in subtitles versus yeah, it's all that stuff, but it's all available now. It's all very nice and then Fanica Pro Camera has been improved and things like this. I donon't know yet what's going on in Logic Pro or'll find out soon. but how about this? Most of it its all AI features You have upgrade Stio. I have it as well I Are these new features making you glad that you subscribe or has it actually been a disappointment Here's hereere's the thing this U 'm pretty sure none of these new features affect me in any significant way. I'm not making video, which one of the features is taking a frame from Final Cut and editing it in Pixelmator That'oundsounds like a lot. Yeah. But here's the thing I'm not going to look at it from My workfload perspective, because yeah it's not adding anything for me. I've said it before It's useless to ask me because I would pay what I'm paying for this just to had to access to Pixelmator Pom iPad because it's that good of an app. But the fact that I get everything else is a bonus. This is just how much software costs. Back in the day, I would pay that for any individual photo editing app. I believe Aperture was eighty dollars. So The fact that we're getting all this on top of it is great, in my opinion But here's the focus of this, notot so much what features work for you But They updated it midsle outside of WWDC. This is what we're paying for more frequent updates and they're delivering that is all we wanted. And as long as we continue to see this, then it will absolutely be worth every dollar. Even if you don't use every feature, someone is using those features and they're benefiting from it and maybe the next update cycle will benefit you as well. That's the whole point of the subscription model is that we get continuous updates and I think that this shows that they're doing that. Okay, that makes sense. I'll be with you there. except you did mention a very particular feature there that Apple announced and it sounds great. This ability to send a frame from Final Cut Pro to Pixom under Pro where you can edit a lookup table all this color grading stuff. I have it Studio, I have the updated versions of both of these app. I do not seem to have the ability to send a frame pro, it's not where Apple says it is. So I'm wondering, am I looking in the wrong place or something not rolled out yet. So I'm being denied here. why are you doing this to me But that's for me to just worry about for the entire week. I've to spend the entire week hitting update and file share to Pressors' all' got at the mit In the meantime, the very last thing I want to talk about before I check in with where we can find you after your holiday is just a little nod to the fact that Apple music celebrated another birthday and I've totally forgotten how many it is. So when would it be? It's like eleven years ago now, Yeahah, eleven music came goodness That means I've been paying was' eleven times twelve How many months have I been paying for Apple Music? Yeah, let's not go into it. Apple music is worth it, definitely Let's go with that. It is a question if you just took all of the money you paid into Apple Music and bought your albums directly from iTunes Um wouldould you be able to match your library size in Apple Music? The thing is is like with any service and I You know, we have a minute here to talk about it. So I have a question for you. so' Soot. Yeah, I'll explain But this is what's interesting to me about Apple music You're not just getting access to the world's catalog of music a lot of services do that. these are R is a company that does this. Tell me if you've heard of Deezer before. haaving access to the world's catalog of music is now de facto. You just expect to easily get to it. Amazon Prime just gives it to you Nobody uses Amazon Prime music because it's a garbage app So why do we use Apple Music? Why do people use Spotify? It's because It's curated, it's designed. It lets you manage your library in a way that makes it happy for you. The algorithms are powerful. But for Apple Music, They're paying artists to come to their secret little stage and record studio recordings of some of their songs and it's amazing every time they do it. They're helping put together live concerts. They have radio shows with many of the world's greatest artists eleven years on They don't seem to be slowing down, they don't seem to be giving up. They're not treating it like it's a side project, they're not treating it like it's worthless. It is fully part of Apple's brand identity. and I appreciate that. and it's worth being a part of Apple One, I think. So goodood on them for continuing this and to continue improving on it year over year. The fact that Apple Music has successfully recreated the MTV experience For free, you don't even have to be a subscriber. You can go watch Apple TV's MTV channel. basasically without having subscription And they there, but yeah, the music videos and stuff like that. like Apple's doing a really good job being a champion of the music industry, whereas Spotify is actively trying to destroy it. That's why I support one over the other Um Which one out of o. Yeah, sorry. o. Yeah. so my question to you is Yes, whyy am I wary? Okay. As station just announced that by twenty twenty eight There will be no more games dis. Oh, I see. Okay, right. And did not know where that was going. Yeah. Yeah And it appears that Blue Ray production, which Sony also owns is ramping down and that we could see the end of physical blu ray discs within the decade And here we are talking about Apple Musical' a subscription service. So I want to ask you, William What is the importance of physical media in this day much to you. You should say that now. If you're listing in Audio, this won't make sense, but I'm actually holding a DVD an Australian showo called The Games which I've wanted to see for something like twenty years impossible to get outside Australia. So I eventually found somebody to tell me a DVD forgot that it would be a different region, but I have been enterprisingly examining the data in order to get it to watch and have a very good time with it But I took it from the DVD, I put it on my plegx server and there are whole issues there, but That's There's so many pros and cons, you make a good point. There's so many pros and cons to physical versus digital media. People forget Devices are region locked. I was on deployment. And I had to make sure I bought the universal regiones unlocked Blue Ray to watch it on my PlayStation Be if I bought The one that was locked to the Bahrain region, I wouldn't be able to load the DVD Right? Yeah Like that's the kind of stuff we had to deal with physical media. region restricted launches, loading up jets with tons of plastic cases holding plastic CDs that are all going to rot eventually in a dump somewhere that cost millions of dollars in jet fuel and burning into our environment to deliver around the world versus hitting download from a green energy server owned by Apple, powered by renewable energy, right?ike the Ps and cons here do exist are buying a license for digital media. Yes If the license owners decide to pull it from iTunes You don't get a say, if you didn't have it downloaded when that license was pulled, you no longer own that media. gone This recently happened with Sony The same people who just announced the death of physical media had a licensing agreement pulled from their digital storefront, which made them remove five hundred movies from Sony's digital store One of't being the terminator Right So the same week that happened, they also announced the end of the ability to use the PlayStation three and PS Vita stores So if you own those consoles from Yes, like twenty years ago. You can no longer download any content to them because they no longer have access. You can jailbreak them and install media yourself because you own the hardware and that's something you can do But you can no longer access the official channel for buying those games. So Sony in the same week announced the death of digital storefronts, the removal of digital media, and the death of physical media that would prevent any of this from happening. So I understand difficulties of this conversation, but here's where we'll end I will say This is inevitable We're leading to a world where It is digital only PC went through the digital only revolution a decade ago It survived It's going to be fine The thing is is the laws and rules around this stuff need to change to allow lending to allow resell, to allow preservation specifically, like how do you preserve digital mia that's endless amounts of encryption and stuff like that without breaking it illegally, right? So there's a lot of conversation to be had here. I will just say, I haven't bought a piece of physical media since twenty fourteen and I'm okay I lost one time Out of the thousand plus movies I have on iTunes. Anchor Man got pulled for my collection for about a month because of a dispute Apple Hat or something. And then and then I had and I think I had to rebuy it for ten dollars later when it came back Like That's the worst thing that's ever happened to me on Apple I wouldn't trust Voodoo which is Walmart's digital. distribution platform But Apple seems to be pretty ingrained in the business. And you can download it. So even if the license disappears, you technically have the file. Everyone, take a breath William, how about yours? Yeah. Well, H I put it this way. If anybody would like to reach me and have me produce for them a physical CD of this very podcast, then I am on William at Appleinsider dot comot and I know you're thinking, let's ask him, but there would be a certain fee involved.
