The newly sworn in MP for Makerfield Andy Burnham says he will stand to replace Sir Kir Stahmer who announced his resignation as Prime Minister earlier, the former health secretary Wes Streeting has given Mr Burnham his backing despite previously saying he would run in any potential leadership contest. The BBC understands that the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, Darren Jones, hasn't ruled out putting himself forward for the job. The Labour MP, Liam Byrne, who supports Andy Burnham to be the next prime minister, says a contest isn't needed.
