In other news, a man has appeared in court , charged with five counts of attempted murder linked to terrorism following alleged anti Muslim attacks in Edinburgh on Friday. Lewis Hawkes was also charged with assault and robbery, breach of the peace and culpable and reckless conduct. The thirty six year old made no plea and was remanded in custody. The former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, has been found guilty of eighteen sex offences, including one of rape. He was charged after two women accused him of sexually abus ing them when they were children, her island correspondent Chris Page reports from New Recrown Court. Donaldson was driven away from the court in a prison van after being remanded into custody. The judge indicated he was facing a lengthy jail term . The man who had been the longest serving MP in Northern Ireland showed no emotion as the jury delivered its verdict, convicting him of all eighteen charges . The offences were one count of rape, thirteen inde ofcent assault, and four of gross indecency. They were committed between nineteen eighty five and two thousand eight. Donaldson's two victims gave evidence during the course of the trial, which lasted for more than four weeks. The former DUP leader will be sentenced in the autumn.
