Eemy unexplained On the morning of the second of march nineteen sixty five, US military aircraft launched a series of devastating bombing raids against targets in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam The strikes formed part of Operation Rolling Thunder America's escalating response to the so called Gulf of Tonkin incident, in which North Vietnamese patrol boats had allegedly attacked the USS Maddos It marked a decisive expansion of US involvement in a conflict that would not end until the fall of Saigon in april nineteen seventy five Over the course of that decade, nearly sixty thousand American service personnel would lose their lives, with hundreds of thousands more wounded The Vietnam War became synonymous with brutality, futility, and profound political divisions Its scars, both physical and psychological would endure long after the fighting ceased It was a war fought in suffocating jungle and under relentless strain where exhaustion, paranoia, and fear became constant companions Amidst that chaos, however, stories began to circulate accounts of encounters that seem to fall outside the boundaries of conventional warfare. Some soldiers would later speak of facing enemies that did not fit any known classification Danang Airbase, originally established during the Second World War and later controlled by the United States, was one of the key hubs of American operations In the summer of nineteen sixty nine An incident would occur there that remains difficult to explain. even decades later The incident came to light through the testimony of Marine Corps private Earl Morrison who at the time was posted in a bunker along the perimeter of Danang Air Base, carrying out routine night sentry duty. Two other Marines were with him And like many such shifts, the hours had passed without incident Morrison had been sitting on a munitions' crate playing cards when the third man reported movement near the wire. Rifle in hand, Morrison moved to the observation slit and scaned the darkness for signs of enemy activity. As his eyes adjusted, he noticed a faint glow emerging from the jungle and drifting slowly towards the fence line within that glow was a shame The three men watched as a humanoid figure moved from the tre line Moving forward within the haze As it drew nearer, they realized it was not walking, but tralling through the air on a large pair of wings By their size, the wings made no sound. Morrison would later say the figure appeared female Long dark hair fell around her shoulders and her black skin seemed to emit the same soft fluorescence that surrounded her. When she reached the bunker, she paused and hovered overhead The Marines stepped cautiously outside, yet none raised their weapons Morrison described an overwhelming calm washing over them. suppressing any instinct to fire For several minutes, they stood in silence, staring upwards as the figure regarded them without expression then with a slow beat of her wings, she turned and glided back towards the jungle appearing once more into the night In the days that followed, Morrison and the two other Marines quietly asked around the base to see whether anyone else had witnessed anything unusual on sentry duty. They avoided sharing the full details of their own encounter but no similar reports surfaced With no answers forthcoming, Morrison approached villagers living nearby cautiously described what he had seen To his surprise, they reacted not with confusion or fear but with knowing smiles According to them, such beings were known locally as nightflyers They were said to have been glimpsed many times before preying onlone travellers, particularly young men whilst leaving groups unharmed The description bears resemblance to a wing cryptid sometimes referred to as the ahul a large bat like creature reported in parts of Southeast Asia Despite scattered sightings across different regions, no physical evidence has ever been produced Whatever these aerial entities are alleged to be, They have remained elusive. slipping between folklore and testimony without ever being conclusively documented An equally troubling encounter was later reported by Craig Thompson, who had served during the Vietnam War as a sergeant with the one hundred and seventy third Airborne Brigade After the conflict, he described how he and several of his men had been spending some much needed downtime bathing in the Bongson River when they noticed a disturbance in the water some distance away At first, it appeared to be little more than turbulence But as the men began cautiously making their way back towards the shoreline, something suddenly emerged from the depths and started to snake its way directly towards them The front of the creature was a large squareish head covered in golden scales that glittered beneath the beating sun Its body was dull, rusty red with a single enormous dorsal fin jutting from its spine and rising high out of the water. Thompson would later estimate the beast to be in the region of thirty feet long and roughly two feet wide He watched in growing horror as the creature's speed increased Cutting through the river with unsettling purpose as the swimmers scrambled for safety By now, several paratroopers who had reached the bank had grabbed their carbines rang out, bullets striking and ricocheting off the water around the advancing shappe. Almost instantaneously, its great head dipped below the surface, followed by the towering dorsal fin And within seconds, it was gone in the years after the war, Thompson found he could not shake the memory of the creature's approach Research led him to the oarfish A deep sea species is capable of reaching similar lengths Yet all fish inhabit ocean depths, not freshwater rivers, are rarely seen near the surface, and none have ever displayed golden scales. Whatever pursued the soldiers that day did not match any recognized aquatic species When I started bedtime stories, I definitely had my doubts. I thought, what if I'm no good at this and no one listens? Around that moment, a commotion from the cockpit drew his attention pilots indicating something up to their right hand side Seconds later, one of the gunners tapped him on the helmet and pointed towards a large shape, moving slowly along a similar trail through the vegetation. Requesting permission from the unit commander to deviate from their course, the helicopter veered away from the formation and began descending over the pathway to see what was travelling along it. Looking down through his camera lens, the photographer focused on a large barrel shaped object moving slowly across the ground. kicking up dust in its way Then without warning, the shape rose from the forest floor as if to meet the hovering aircraft. The photographer cried out an alarm as he realized he was looking at the head of a gigantic snake nearly four feet wide, attached to a thick, undulating body that stretched out behind it for what he estimated as at least one hundred feet He began taking photographs of the colossal serpent, images that have never been published, before the pilot received orders to rejoin the rest of the unit and the helicopter turned back onto its original course As with Private Morrison, the photographer later made inquiries with local villagers about what he had seen told that in the deepest, most untouched parts of the jungle live giant snakes known as bull eaters so named for their ability to swallow a fully grown cow Their immense weight and strength, he was told, allowed them to force their way through dense jungles. knocking down or parting trees as they moved, creating the strange pathways visible from the air The snake he described would have been larger than any ever recorded, and roughly twice the size of the largest prehistoric snake fossil discovered It most closely resembles the green anaconda, which is heavier and thicker than species such as the Python The largest confirmed anaconda measured around thirty feet in length and weighed approximately five hundred pounds A creature more than three times that size would represent something far beyond any recognized species And this was not the first such report In nineteen fifty nine A flying officer named Remy van Lirer was flying over the Belgium Congo when he spotted a gigantic snake moving through the jungle below Estimating it to be nearly fifty feet in length, he asked his pilot to circle back so he could photograph it He had managed to capture only a few quick images when the creature suddenly reared up from the ground, rising nearly ten feet into the air towards the aircraft The unexpected movement alarmed the pilot, who immediately turned and headed back to base, where Van Leirer later developed the photographs of the encounter which can be viewed online As well as colossal snakes, there were reports of encounters with other reptilian creatures, including one described by an army corporal on patrol roughly thirty miles south of the DMZ during the summer of nineteen seventy. ing as second in command of a recom platoon He and his men were moving along a jungle trail when they detected movement ahead The soldiers immediately went to ground, taking concealed positions and preparing to ambush what they assumed was an enemy patrol Fteen tenh minutes passed before the platoon broke cover and moved cautiously forward into the darkness only to find that someone had constructed a low wall of boulders across the trail. Skirting the obstruction, they noticed disturbed foliage leading off into the trees Warily following this fresh pathway, they arrived at a cave set into the face of a rocky outcrop. As they approached the entrance, they were forced back by a foul and debilitating stench, like rotting meat. Believing whoever had blocked the path was hiding inside The soldiers withdrew into the trees and trained their weapons on the dark openings. Several men were struck by how unnaturally smooth the edges of the cave appeared, as if bored into the rock by machinery rather than shaped by erosion As they waited The sounds of the jungle seemed to die away until the surrounding forest fell unnervingly silent thenen movement stirred within the cave And two figures emerged into the moonlight The corporal described them as approximately seven feet tall and humanoid They wore no clothing bodies were covered in thick, scaly hide The pair appeared to communicate through loud clicks and hisses before abruptly pausing Both turned and steared directly towards the undergrowth where the platoon lay concealed slowly onene raised alaed hand. as if indicating their position to its companions then Gunfire erupted A young soldier opened fire in terror And the rest of the platoon followed almost instantly, unleashing a sustained volley The serergeant shouted for a ceasefire. But it took several seconds before the firing stopped When the recon team crept forward The creatures had retreated back into the cave, leaving several pools of dark fluid the soldiers assumed was blood stench had grown stronger still feearing further confrontation The platoon rigged explosives and collapsed the cave entrance, sealing whatever lay within. The men were ordered to keep silent and resume their patrol No formal report was ever filed The story surfaced years later at a veterans gathering, one of many accounts suggesting that not every enemy encountered in Vietnam wore a uniform On the afternoon of the second of august nineteen sixty four The US destroyer USS Maddox was conducting an intelligence patrol in the Gulf of Tonkin when she was approached by three North Vietnamese torpedo boats. After warning shots were fired, the vessels exchanged gunfire. and the patrol craft were eventually driven off with assistance from US aircraft launched from the carrier USS Tkonder Oga The clash would become a pivotal moment in America's expanding role in Vietnam The Maddock sustained only minor damage and resumed her patrol within forty eight hours, this time accompanied by a second destroyer, The USS turn a joy On the evening of the fourth of August, lookouts aboard both ships reported dark shapes moving across the water Almost immediately, sonar operators detected what they believed were incoming torpedoes Over the next four hours, the destroyers executed evasive maneuvvers, firing guns and dropping depth charges into the darkness Official reports later stated that multiple torpedo attacks had been avoided and enemy vessels destroyed North Vietnam denied the encounter insisting no attack had taken place In subsequent years, several sailors from the Maddox conceded that no Vietnamese craft had been visually confirmed during the second engagement. More than six hundred shells were fired at radar returns and sonar contacts that may have been distorted by weather and sea conditions One SNR operator, speaking anonymously years later, offered a more unsettling account. He claimed the contacts did not behave like torpedoes approached at high speed, then veered sharply away Some traveled in pairs or small groups, whilst others passed beneath the ship, lingering briefly before altering course again None appeaar to be affected by countermeasures or depth charges When asked what he believed the objects were operator suggested they were organic rather than mechanical Their movements, he insisted, displayed coordination and deductability beyond any known weapon of the era Several sailors who served that night remain convinced that whatever shadowed their destroyers in those waters was not conventional enemy hardware. pererhaps not human at all For decades, historians have debated what truly occurred during the second incident Delassified documents and later investigations suggested faulty radar readings, confused sonar returns, and overreaction in poor weather Amongst some veterans doubt lingered recall the strange speed and manoeuvverability of the underwater contacts, insisting that whatever moved beneath them did not resemble drifting debris or malfunctioning instruments. At the time, an airman named Robert L. Pollock was serving as Ladmaster aboard a C one hundred thirty attached to the eight hundred thirty fourth Air Division. His crew had been tasked with a routine supply run from Danang Airfield to Camron Bay A flight that usually lasted around forty five minutes Near the end of the journey Pollock was seated alone in the cargo hold completing paperwork when he detected movement near the rear door straining to see He noticed a swirling mass of gray mist materializing inside the compartment The vapor thickened and drifted towards the center of the hold, rotating slowly around a central axis Assuming a malfunction Pollock called for an engineer watching uneasily as the mist expanded until it filled nearly half the space Joined by the engineer, the two men observed the mass as it shifted inside the aircraft, its wispy tendrils seeming to probe its surroundings The pilot and navigator, having set the aircraft on autopilot, soon joined them But all four stood watching as the mist hovered in the air One airman stepped forward and inserted his hand into the vapor gasping as his arm appeared to vanish. Drawing it, he reported no change in temperature or resistance. It was as though nothing was there at all. Eventually summoning his courage Pollock stepped into the fog and was met with complete darkness Once inside, he made for the rear of the compartment, navigating only by touch Answering the calls of his colleagues, he pushed through the blackness and returned reporting that he hadd smelled nothing tasted nothing and experienced no restriction of breath Light itself seemed unable to penetrate the mist And uneasy tension began to build amongst the crew as they considered whether the entity might expand into the cockpit Pollock later describes staring at the dense fg with growing dread. Cvinced there is intelligence behind it thenen almost as quickly as it had formed The mist began rotating in the opposite direction gradually shrank before descending through the deck of the hold as though passing through solid metal Within moments, it disappeared leaving the four airmen with no trace it had ever been there The remainder of the mission continued without incident Upon arrival, the aircraft underwent a thorough inspection which revealed no fault that might have produced smoke or vapor inside the hole Pollock remains convinced that what he witnessed was more than a simple atmospheric anomaly but something sentient InQquisitive. Across the globe there are stories of humanoid creatures covered in thick fur, said to dwell at the peripheries of civilization While some are likened to wolf or dog like beings, the majority appear Simeon, described as sasquatch or apeemen In the far East, these creatures are known as the Batutut, or forest people believed to inhabit the wilderness of Laos and Northern Borneo Ancient writings describe them as seven feet tall, covered in black or brown fur, and savage in nature, attacking unwary travellers During the Vietnam War, reports surfaced from multiple locations of encounters between American troops and similar beings sometimes with fatal consequences As word spread amongst the occupying forces Soldiers nickname them roock apes, referring to their alleged habit of hurling stones and boulders at intruders One such encounter was described by a former marine named Steve Williams In the summer of nineteen sixty eight A spepecial forces unit was parachuted into Dense's jungle on a covert assignment After completing their low altitude drop The team established a perimeter and rigged tripwires linked to clayms and land minines On their first evening, an explosion shuttered the silence. Grabbing their weapons, the men moved cautiously through the undergrowth and discovered the remains of a strange creature apppparently killed after triggering one of the traps. Williams described it as roughly eight feet tall itss lower half mutilated by the blast It was covered in thick hair, lighter across the head, with eyes set deep beneath a pronounced brow The creature possessed a muscular torso and long powerful limbs Most traumatizing, however, was the overpowering stench issuing from the corpse so severe that the soldiers later referred to it as the stench monkey The team withdrew to their hide sight, but throughout the night they heard anguished howls echoing from the direction of the body. Assuming the cries might belong to the creature's mate They eventually packed up their equipment and treked deeper into the jungle. listening as the mournful sounds faded behind them The following year, a small group of infantrymen on a nighttime jungle patrol were caught in an enemy ambush forcing them onto the defensive As the Americans return fire against Vietnamese forces surrounding them A sudden disturbance erupted in the undergrowth A giant humanoid burst from the bush The stunned troops watched as a fur covered figure charged directly at the Vietnamese positions Raring as it advanced Enemy fire slackened almost immediately And the Americans listened in disbelief as the shouts and cries of the opposing soldiers retreated into the darkness The patrol remained in position rifles trained on the jungle until dawn Moving forward cautiously, they discovered numerous bodies scattered across the ground manyany badly mutilated Some appeared torn apart with teeth others crushed by brute strength and few were intact Disturbed by what they had found The sergeant ordered an immediate withdrawal later, when the men quietly recounted the incident to others in their unit Several admitted to having experienced similar encounters, but had remained silent fearing ridicule. Perhaps the most dramatic rock aping encounter reportedly took place in nineteen sixty six at Hill eight hundred and sixty eight in central Kwangnam provroince A Marine recon force had occupied the high ground as a base of operations when one of their patrols reported what appeared to be a large enemy force advancing on their position As their captain ordered the unit to prepare for contact, another patrol returned from the tree line, claiming they had been ambushed not by Vietnamese soldiers giant ape like creatures Moments later, large rocks and boulders were hurled from the jungle. crashing down near the American perimeter Loud cries and howls echo through the trees before numerous large figures emerged charging towards the Marines Witnesses later estimated there were more than one hundred attackers The Marines open fire with every weapon available. Despite heavy casualties amongst the creatures from machine gun and mortiffire Several reached the defensive line, and fierce hand to hand fighting erupted. Marines stabbed and slashed at the attackers with bayonets before eventually driving them back As the creatures retreated carried off their fallen No marines were killed, though several required evacuation for serious injuries. The clash became known as the Battle of Dongden And Hill eight hundred and sixty eight was later said to have been the site of two further engagements before the attack ceased. Most Rock eight reports were far less dramatic and have been dismissed as misidentifications or the result of stress and fatigue Vietnam is home to several monkey species, including the Tonkin snub nose monkey Known for territorial behavior and a distinctive bark like cry Whilst much smaller than the eight foot entities described in these accounts, skeptics argue that fear, poor visibility and confusion could have exaggerated their size and aggression. The widespread use of cannabis and NSD among some U.S. troops has also been cited as a contributing factor Combined with exhaustion and the unfamiliar jungle environment Such substances could distort perception particularly at night It is not difficult to imagine how shadows and movement might be transformed into something far more monstrous Yet many of these accounts involve multiple witnesses And in some cases, plaster casts of large footprints were reportedly taken from sites where clashes occurred It seems unlikely that hundreds of soldiers stationed across different regions independently imagine the same sort of phenomenon All of these incidents share a common thread There is no simple explanation fatigue and fear may account for some details pattern remains Time and again, in places torn apart by violence, something else has been reported moving at the edges of the battlefield Perhaps war does not summon monsters Perhaps It simply reveals them
