Some soldiers would later speak of facing enemies that did not fit any known classification Danang Airbase, originally established during the Second World War and later controlled by the United States, was one of the key hubs of American operations In the summer of nineteen sixty nine An incident would occur there that remains difficult to explain. even decades later The incident came to light through the testimony of Marine Corps private Earl Morrison who at the time was posted in a bunker along the perimeter of Danang Air Base, carrying out routine night sentry duty. Two other Marines were with him And like many such shifts, the hours had passed without incident Morrison had been sitting on a munitions' crate playing cards when the third man reported movement near the wire. Rifle in hand, Morrison moved to the observation slit and scaned the darkness for signs of enemy activity. As his eyes adjusted, he noticed a faint glow emerging from the jungle and drifting slowly towards the fence line within that glow was a shame The three men watched as a humanoid figure moved from the tre line Moving forward within the haze As it drew nearer, they realized it was not walking, but tralling through the air on a large pair of wings By their size, the wings made no sound. Morrison would later say the figure appeared female Long dark hair fell around her shoulders and her black skin seemed to emit the same soft fluorescence that surrounded her. Requesting permission from the unit commander to deviate from their course, the helicopter veered away from the formation and began descending over the pathway to see what was travelling along it. Looking down through his camera lens, the photographer focused on a large barrel shaped object moving slowly across the ground. kicking up dust in its way Then without warning, the shape rose from the forest floor as if to meet the hovering aircraft. Several men were struck by how unnaturally smooth the edges of the cave appeared, as if bored into the rock by machinery rather than shaped by erosion As they waited The sounds of the jungle seemed to die away until the surrounding forest fell unnervingly silent thenen movement stirred within the cave And two figures emerged into the moonlight The corporal described them as approximately seven feet tall and humanoid They wore no clothing bodies were covered in thick, scaly hide The pair appeared to communicate through loud clicks and hisses before abruptly pausing Both turned and steared directly towards the undergrowth where the platoon lay concealed slowly onene raised alaed hand. as if indicating their position to its companions then Gunfire erupted A young soldier opened fire in terror And the rest of the platoon followed almost instantly, unleashing a sustained volley The serergeant shouted for a ceasefire. After warning shots were fired, the vessels exchanged gunfire. and the patrol craft were eventually driven off with assistance from US aircraft launched from the carrier USS Tkonder Oga The clash would become a pivotal moment in America's expanding role in Vietnam The Maddock sustained only minor damage and resumed her patrol within forty eight hours, this time accompanied by a second destroyer, The USS turn a joy On the evening of the fourth of August, lookouts aboard both ships reported dark shapes moving across the water Almost immediately, sonar operators detected what they believed were incoming torpedoes Over the next four hours, the destroyers executed evasive maneuvvers, firing guns and dropping depth charges into the darkness Official reports later stated that multiple torpedo attacks had been avoided and enemy vessels destroyed North Vietnam denied the encounter insisting no attack had taken place In subsequent years, several sailors from the Maddox conceded that no Vietnamese craft had been visually confirmed during the second engagement. More than six hundred shells were fired at radar returns and sonar contacts that may have been distorted by weather and sea conditions One SNR operator, speaking anonymously years later, offered a more unsettling account. His crew had been tasked with a routine supply run from Danang Airfield to Camron Bay A flight that usually lasted around forty five minutes Near the end of the journey Pollock was seated alone in the cargo hold completing paperwork when he detected movement near the rear door straining to see He noticed a swirling mass of gray mist materializing inside the compartment The vapor thickened and drifted towards the center of the hold, rotating slowly around a central axis Assuming a malfunction Pollock called for an engineer watching uneasily as the mist expanded until it filled nearly half the space Joined by the engineer, the two men observed the mass as it shifted inside the aircraft, its wispy tendrils seeming to probe its surroundings The pilot and navigator, having set the aircraft on autopilot, soon joined them But all four stood watching as the mist hovered in the air One airman stepped forward and inserted his hand into the vapor gasping as his arm appeared to vanish. Drawing it, he reported no change in temperature or resistance. It was as though nothing was there at all. Eventually summoning his courage Pollock stepped into the fog and was met with complete darkness Once inside, he made for the rear of the compartment, navigating only by touch Answering the calls of his colleagues, he pushed through the blackness and returned reporting that he hadd smelled nothing tasted nothing and experienced no restriction of breath Light itself seemed unable to penetrate the mist And uneasy tension began to build amongst the crew as they considered whether the entity might expand into the cockpit Pollock later describes staring at the dense fg with growing dread. Perhaps the most dramatic rock aping encounter reportedly took place in nineteen sixty six at Hill eight hundred and sixty eight in central Kwangnam provroince A Marine recon force had occupied the high ground as a base of operations when one of their patrols reported what appeared to be a large enemy force advancing on their position As their captain ordered the unit to prepare for contact, another patrol returned from the tree line, claiming they had been ambushed not by Vietnamese soldiers giant ape like creatures Moments later, large rocks and boulders were hurled from the jungle. crashing down near the American perimeter Loud cries and howls echo through the trees before numerous large figures emerged charging towards the Marines Witnesses later estimated there were more than one hundred attackers The Marines open fire with every weapon available. Despite heavy casualties amongst the creatures from machine gun and mortiffire Several reached the defensive line, and fierce hand to hand fighting erupted. Marines stabbed and slashed at the attackers with bayonets before eventually driving them back As the creatures retreated carried off their fallen No marines were killed, though several required evacuation for serious injuries. The clash became known as the Battle of Dongden And Hill eight hundred and sixty eight was later said to have been the site of two further engagements before the attack ceased. Most Rock eight reports were far less dramatic and have been dismissed as misidentifications or the result of stress and fatigue Vietnam is home to several monkey species, including the Tonkin snub nose monkey Known for territorial behavior and a distinctive bark like cry Whilst much smaller than the eight foot entities described in these accounts, skeptics argue that fear, poor visibility and confusion could have exaggerated their size and aggression.
