From the victims of catastrophic disasters and fatal accidents, to soldiers and civilians killed in times of war, and those who fell prey to notorious murderers. The country's history is steeped in tragedy. Yet it is often the places where such killers were ultimately confined that have given rise to some of the most disturbing accounts of all. Amongst them is the story we will be examining in this episode. Horror. of Alcatraz. Situated in the center of San Francisco Bay. Alcatraz Island has a history that, in many ways, mirrors the broader social struggles of the United States itself. Over time, the small isolated outcrop would serve a variety of roles, each reflecting the changing priorities and anxieties of the nation. Spanish explorers first encountered the island in the late 18th century. They named it La Isla de los Alcatrazis, after the large population of sea birds that inhabited its rocky surface. At the time the island was little more than a natural refuge, largely untouched by permanent settlement. Yet their arrival marked the beginning of a gradual transformation. one which would ultimately displace the wildlife that had once thrived there. By the mid-19th century. The rapid expansion of San Francisco during the gold rush had elevated the city to one of growing strategic importance. In response, the United States government moved to establish a permanent military presence to defend the bay. Alcatraz was selected as the ideal location for a coastal fortification. and construction soon began on a heavily armed installation designed to guard the harbour. At its peak, the island was equipped with extensive artillery. in position to repel any hostile force attempting to enter the bay. In the end, however Those weapons were never fired in anger. As the threat of naval attack diminished, the military presence on the island began to evolve. The fort was gradually repurposed. First as a detention facility for military personnel. and later as a full scale army prison. decades it hires deserters, insubordinate soldiers, and political prisoners. With the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the strain placed upon the American penal system led to a further transformation. Alcatraz was converted into a federal penitentiary. Its isolation, combined with the freezing, fast moving waters of the bay, gave it a reputation as a place from which escape was all but impossible. Until its closure in nineteen sixty three. prison saw a number of deaths amongst both inmates and guards. Some were the result of violent confrontations. Others occurred during failed escape attempts, and many simply came through natural causes. In the decades since, visitors and staff have reported a wide range of unexplained phenomena. Disembodied voices. Shadowy figures. and sudden drops in temperature. Whether these encounters are the lingering presence of former prisoners or something older tied to the island's earlier history remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that not all who claim to experience these phenomena describe them as passive or benign. Some describe something far darker. something that doesn't simply linger But response. There is no shortage of accounts from former corrections officers who worked inside the prison on Alcatraz Island. many of which relate to alleged hauntings within its walls. Their testimony carries significant weight, particularly when one considers the harsh and often volatile conditions they endured whilst guarding some of the most dangerous criminals in American history. These reports have only increased in frequency since the prison was converted into a museum. park rangers and staff also recounting similarly unsettling experiences. Some have described being physically assaulted by unseen assailants, reporting sudden blows or the sensation of being pushed, despite nobody else being present. Others have claimed to witness furniture shifting positions. Or cell doors moving, seemingly of their own accord. also accounts of pained and agonizing cries echoing from within the former morgue. sounds that have prompted immediate investigation only for those responding to find the area completely empty. Elsewhere within the prison, phantom sounds of musical instruments have reportedly been heard drifting through the corridors from cells once occupied by inmates such as Al Capone. Visitors and staff alike have also described sightings of figures moving through the site in period clothing. only for them to vanish entirely when approached. Perhaps the most notable report of such activity comes from the prison's first civilian warden, James Johnston. He oversaw the facility for fourteen years, residing on the island with his family in a private house, where he regularly hosted social gatherings for staff, including a large Christmas party every year. One such gathering in the late 1940s, Johnston was moving amongst his guests when he was suddenly brought to a halt. A man had appeared in the room whom he did not recognize, and whose presence immediately stood out. The individual was dressed in worn and outdated work clothes, entirely different from the attire of the other guests, and he sported a distinctive mutton chop beard. Johnston focused on the man. he became aware of a change in the atmosphere within the room. temperature began to drop. creating a distinct chill in the air. A nearby stove began to falter and extinguish itself. and Johnston noticed his breath becoming faintly visible. Gradually, the attention of the other guests was drawn to the figure. whether due to the sudden drop in temperature or by following the warden's gaze. The room then fell into an uneasy silence, but Then As Johnston took a step forward to speak. The figure abruptly vanished. There was no gradual fading or retreat. he simply ceased to exist where he had been standing. In the moments that followed, the chill dissipated. and those who had witnessed the event gathered to compare their recollections. It became apparent that their accounts were consistent, with multiple individuals describing the same figure and sequence of events. In the years since, examination of records has led to speculation that the figure may have been an engineer named Michael Mann. who worked on the fort's construction in the eighteen and later drowned in the bay. Others have since reported seeing a similar figure near the warden's residence. Visitors have also described encounters with a woman in a dark green dress who disappears when approached. As the prison never housed female prisoners or staff, Her identity remains unclear. though some suggest she may have been the wife of a guard. Also accounts of presences within the prison walls that do not resemble any known individual connected to the island's history. And in some cases person at all. During the 1970s, an incident is said to have taken place involving a park ranger by the name of Dan Milleschi. who ultimately resigned his post after only a few weeks of working at the site. Dan is reported as having been a former San Francisco police department officer. applied for the ranger position not long after retiring from the force. In the short time he had worked on the island, his colleagues described him as funny and easygoing. Someone who had made a strong first impression on those he had worked with. Then one night a series of frantic screams sounded out from deep within the facility's D wing. bringing the Rangers who are on duty nearby running to investigate. This wing had been used as an isolation block when the prison was operational, with difficult prisoners confined to the cells there for lengthy periods of time as punishment. The Rangers soon found Dan curled up in the corner of one of the cells, screaming for his colleagues to come inside and help him. seemingly unable or unwilling to leave. After managing to calm their distressed colleague, entered the cell and helped him back into the corridor. before asking what had taken place. Dan would later explain how he had been walking along the central corridor of D-Block when he had heard an unexpected metallic sound. coming from behind him. Turning his torchlight back along the rows of cell entrances, he had detected movement, which he then quickly illuminated with the beam. The torchlight revealed one of the barred metal cell doors apparently in the process of being closed again, as though it had just swung open. Confident that he was likely the victim of a prank from one of his new colleagues, The former police officer had called out how amusing he found the joke. then made his way back down to the selling question. opening the door and stepping inside, shining all around the small confined room. He had expected to find one of the other rangers stood waiting there for him. Perhaps with a mocking smile on his face at the conclusion of the prank. But to his bewilderment, the cell was exactly the same as all the others along the corridor. Completely empty, save for a cart and a toilet. Moments later. The same soft metallic clang sounded from behind him. And he turned his head to find that the cell door once again apparently closed itself. A sudden chill began to creep down the ranger's spine. realised that any sense of warmth seemed to have vanished from inside the confined space. Setting the torch down onto the cart. He had started to rub his hands together in an effort to retain their warmth. as his breath began to become visible in the dim torchlight. The temperature inside the cell had dropped to an unnatural level. Colder than anything he'd experienced elsewhere in the block. continue to fall with each passing second. Still assuming he was the victim of a joke from his colleagues, Dan had resisted the urge to shout out or to call for help. instead hoping to force his tormentors to act first. He remained where he stood. Listening intently. Trying to detect any sound beyond the faint echo. of his own breathing. And then, suddenly, the torch that he had set down on the bed near to where he stood was Had moved slightly. subtly altering the path of the beam that issued forth from it. Looking down in amazement, Dan watched as a dark shape retracted itself from near the object. and receded back into the shadows that covered the wall behind the torch. As if emboldened by his lack of reaction, The shape re-emerged from the darkness, and he realized he was looking at what presented as an arm. The limb had absolutely no definition or identifying features, and did not in any way reflect the torchlight. Instead. Only seeming to absorb it completely. It reached out again past the torch towards him. And then a second arm, followed by a head and torso began to detach themselves from the shadows at the same time. The movement was slow and deliberate. as though whatever was forming was struggling against the surface it was emerging from. Backing away in horror. Dan finally let out a strangled scream. Dark humanoid shape. and began to move across the cell towards him. As more and more of the featureless black figure exposed itself. He yelled louder. Gain again. Each scream accompanied by the visible plume of his frozen breath. As the dark limb slid past the torch, they knocked it from the cot and onto the floor. where the light flickered briefly before cutting out completely. Plunging the cell. into total darkness. In that moment Dan could see only one thing. What appeared to be a pair of glowing red eyes. fixed in the position where he had last seen the figure's head. In no time at all, the light of his colleague's torches came flooding into the darkness through the narrow cell door. Commotion brought the other rangers running. gaze refused to shift towards them. instead remaining locked on the darkened wall beside the cart. where he believed he could still see something retreat back into the shadows. Searches of the cell, both at the time of the incident and later in daylight, did not reveal any trace of what Dunn claimed to have seen. But his account was taken very seriously by his employers. Not only because of his character but Because the intruder he described closely resembled perhaps the most infamous entity in the history of the prison. Murderous presence known simply Is the Alcatraz thing. As well as the standard cells which were situated on D wings There were also a small number of specifically adapted cells used to discipline the most problematic detainees. Inside these cells there were no windows, and no furnishings beyond a hole in the floor where the prisoner was able to defecate and urinate when required. A solid metal door was mounted outside the cell and in addition to the conventional bard entry. And once this had been engaged, it plunged the occupant into complete darkness. It was into these rooms that the most disruptive of the Alcatraz inmates were placed, in the most extreme cases for weeks and months upon end. And it was in one of these specially designed cells Designated as fourteen D that the horrifying story of the Alcatraz thing is said to have emerged. At some time during the nineteen forties, a particularly difficult prisoner was dragged kicking and screaming along D Wing down towards cell fourteen. as a result of his persistently poor behavior. From the moment he was secured inside the cell, which had been nicknamed the hole by the guards who used it, The man began shouting and screaming to be released. For the first few hours, the sounds coming from inside the sealed cell had been ones of aggression and rage. prisoner threatening violence upon the guard outside. Then gradually for those outside the cell who were listening on the entreaties began to take on a far more desperate edge. Although he was still making threats against his jailers if they did not release him, occupant was also now pleading with them to do so. He was no longer. Safe inside the cell. Oli Feed the obsession. As evening fell, one of the guards approached the cell and opened the outer door in order to slide a meal through the internal bars. The moment he did so an arm suddenly shot out from the darkness, snaking through the gap and grabbing hold of his sleeve. The prisoner clutched at the fabric. desperately pleading to be moved to another cell. Insisting that if he remained where he was, he would likely be dead by the following morning. Startled, the guard pulled himself free and demanded to know what the man was talking about. What possible danger could he be in, locked alone inside a secured cell? Lowering his voice, his eyes darting nervously into the darkness behind him, prisoner insisted that he was not alone. There was something inside the cell with him. Something that moved when the light was gone. He described a dark figure. one that could only be seen by the faint glow of its eyes. Red and unblinking, they watched him constantly from the corners of the cell. prisoner then thrust his arms forward. showing fresh scratches and marks across his skin. claiming they had been inflicted by whatever was sharing the space with him. Despite his scepticism. guard called for assistance. Several others arrived and together they entered the cell to search for any sign of another occupant. They found nothing. The space was exactly as it should have been. Bare, confined, and empty, aside from the increasingly distressed prisoner and the hole in the floor that served as a toilet. Unsettled but unconvinced, the guards forced the man's meal through the bars to before retreat once more. As they sealed both doors, the cell was again plunged into complete darkness. As night deepened, the prisoners' cries continued to echo along the wings. His voice carried through the corridor, growing increasingly frantic. until other inmates began shouting for him to be moved so they could sleep. Gradually the outbursts gave way to something quieter. Desperate. Muttering, sobbing, and broken whispers. that eventually faded into silence. Assuming the man had finally exhausted himself, the guard continued their rounds, and the rest of the wing settled into sleek. When the cell was open the following morning. prisoner was found dead. sprawled across the floor at the centre of the darkened room. There were no immediate signs of what had caused his death. and no clear explanation could be offered. Further check of the room was carried out to search for any evidence of foul play, before the man's body was then moved to the prison morgue for further inspection. Following an autopsy, the prison doctor confirmed that the man had been strangled to death. Pointing to livid bruising around his neck. clearly formed in the shape of fingers. However, the doctor also stated that due to the angle and manner in which the pressure had been applied, It would have been impossible for the prisoner to have inflicted those injuries upon himself. In addition to this, it was not believed possible for someone to strangle themselves to death as they would pass out before doing so. their grip releasing as they lost consciousness and awareness. Making such a scenario medically implausible. Quietly filing the medical report, the warden ordered his staff to put the matter to the backs their minds, and to concentrate on the other prisoners instead. Further unrest followed during one of the routine morning roll calls on D Wing. which took place several days later, disrupting the usual order of the wings. having ordered all of the prisoners out of their cells to be counted. the guards became frustrated when the numbers appeared to be incorrect. Despite their best efforts, each time they attempted to carry out a headcount, the They ended up with one prisoner too many standing in the line before them. A discrepancy that none of them could reasonably explain. All of a sudden, a series of shouts and yells broke out from the end of the line. of prisoners breaking ranks and retreating quickly towards their cells in apparent fear and confusion. After a number of scuffles, the guards managed to restore order. At which point the warden arrived and demanded to know what was taking place. He then stood in silence, as the prisoners who had been standing at the far end of the roll call insisted was also present. claimed he had been stood beside them. as quiet and unmoving as the counting had been underway. before slowly fading from view. once his presence had been noticed. In the years that followed this incident, there were numerous additional reports from both inmates and visitors describing a figure with glowing eyes, said to stalk the corridors of the prison in silence. It is also alleged that the unfortunate prisoner who died in cell 14D was not its only victim. and that another high profile inmate was also affected by whatever unseen presence was believed to reside within that cell. In January of nineteen thirty nine prisoners escape from the main building. and made for the surrounding waters in a desperate attempt to flee. only to be recaptured when one of their number proved unable to swim. All four men were subsequently confined to isolation cells for the next three months, including a convicted bank robber named Rufus McCain, who served his punishment inside cell fourteen D. After spending up to twenty three hours a day in the darkness of the cell for months on end, McCain was eventually released back into the prison's general population. But it is said that he was a changed man by the time he emerged. Pale withdrawn. constantly looking over his shoulder. as though he believed something unseen was following him at all times. watching his every movement. His faculties and behavior gradually deteriorated in the weeks that followed, as he became increasingly paranoid about his surroundings. often reacting to things that others could neither see nor hear. Eventually, in November 1940, he was stabbed to death after becoming involved in a violent confrontation with another inmate in the prison yard. It has been claimed that whatever unseen entity had made Cell fourteen D its home had driven McCain to the brink of insanity during his confinement there. The origins of the Alcatraz thing and the other ghostly figures reportedly seen within the prison corridors remain a subject of ongoing debate. The most common explanation is that these are the spirits of those who died on the island. Both during its time as a military installation and later as a prison. Their souls are said to be trapped upon the barren island by the same freezing waters that once prevented their physic. anchoring them there indefinitely. But there are other theories which predate even the arrival of the Spanish settlers in San Francisco Bay. It is rumoured that the island may have been used as a place of punishment by the two main tribes who lived in the area. The Ohlone and the Miwa. who are said to have exiled individuals there for crimes or other transgressions. Those who were taken to the island either drown whilst trying to escape or or were later found dead under unexplained circumstances. Which may suggest that whatever presence resides on Alcatraz has existed there far longer than previously believed, waiting in the darkness. Plans recently announced by the US government to once again use Alcatraz Island as a working prison It is likely that stories of its alleged hauntings will naturally increase in volume. drawing renewed attention to the events and accounts that have long surrounded the site. And it is equal that if the prison does reopen, now equipped with the benefit of CCTV cameras and other modern digital monitoring systems, we may finally begin to gather more substantial evidence of what has been described as the Alcatraz thing. Should such a presence exist at all? And perhaps at last we may be able to reach some form of conclusion as to whether it is something tied to the prisoners who once lived and died on the island itself. Or something far older and far more sinister. Than has ever been. Previously. being understood.
