And later, when becoming a mum herself, her children's rooms got the same treatment Several of her siblings would later speak publicly on her behalf and their willingness to speak about Lindseay, sometimes in painful detail, and often more than two decades after her death is itself a measure of how loved she was within the family. Linda was Lindseay's closest confidant and the two saw each other regularly throughout nineteen ninety eight, even after Linda began to find it harder to visit the Stanford Road house, because she did not want to encounter her husband, Mitchell Qui, who I'll introduce shortly Lindsey's social life as an adult centered around the family home children and a small circle of female friends in South Park rather than the pubs and casinos around which her husband moved It was when she was seventeen that Lindsay entered her first serious long term relationship which was with a young man who was also from Southport. Before long, Lindseay fell pregnant, but the two's relationship would not last and ended soon after Not long after the breakup, Lindseay met the aforementioned Mitchell Qui through her brother, Peter at a casino the two men worked at The pair tied the knot in august nineteen ninety five and the wedding took place very quickly after they met It believed Lindseay was love bombed by Qui, which is perhaps why they got engaged and married so soon Love bombing, if you don't know, is a manipulation tactic used by narcissistic individuals to gain control over their romantic partners She was still a teenager and heavily pregnant with another man's child when Qui, who was twenty, married Lindsay But even so, she had a lot of people come to the wedding from her side of the family Qui's younger brother Elliot was the only family member who attended from his side Linda believed Lindsay was doing the right thing, as she believed a father figure would be good for the child Peter Sr. was always very suspicious of Qui's motives, as well as the mental space Lindseay was in at the time of accepting the proposal due to a pregnancy hormones being all over the shop Lindseay was said to have been visibly happy at the ceremony itself But that same evening, Qui reportedly flew into a rage that left her in tears That was the first sign of the controlling and at times violent behavior that would mark the next three years of their lives together Lindssey's daughter from her previous relationship was born late in nineteen ninety five, around six weeks after the wedding And from the very beginning, she was raised inside the household of the newlyweds as Qui's daughter in everything but biology Lindsay threw herself into motherhood with both hands and enjoyed the everyday rituals such a role brings School runs, bath time, endless tidying up. If you're a parent, you know the score And she also liked having her mum and sister around. who I'm sure not only helped Lindsay but offered some welcome words of wisdom and support Qui was born a couple of years before Lindseay down in the East England county of Essex Dad, who as I've alluded to her, did not attend the wedding, was described in news reporting as living in the West Lancashire market town of Ormskirk during our main timeline It's located a few miles inland from Southport. Twi's mom passed away when he was young And it's that loss which spurred his family's move to Southport Elliot CQui worked as a butcher And the brothers grew up as a close knit family of three The brothers were especially close, with the younger Elliot supposedly being in both fear and awe of his older brother. It gives us a sense of the dynamic between them. Qui essentially had a sort of parental role for parts of their childhood And many argue that was how he persuaded Elliot to help him later on He felt he owed his brother as much It's worth noting that in a channel five documentary covering this case, it states that Elliot had special needs which likely made him more vulnerable to Qias controlling ts By the time he met Lindseay in nineteen ninety five, KQui was already moving through the strands of work that would define his late teens and early twenties He spent time working at amusement parks, fairgrounds and casinos The place is designed around play and chance Forensic psychologist prorofessor Craig Jackson said Qui was a classic game playayer So those types of roles suited him to a te Most of the jobs were within walking or short driving distance of Southport's Seafront And by the summer of nineteen ninety eight, reports suggest KQuai was based at Southport Pleasureland on Marine Drive It's an amusement park which is known locally as Southport Fair or Southport Funfair and currently trades as Adventure Coast Southport The place of employment is worth remembering for later in the story. Casino jobs in particular took Kuai into a different social world ter back night shifts, low rnt glamour, and the careful theatre of a creep as patter Southport had two notable casinos at that point, the first being a site at Lordge Street in the former Grand Casino builduilding And the second being a Gentting site that opened later As for the work he did at fairgrounds and amusement parks, his colleagues described him as the kind of guy who, rather than building a stable career, was more interested in floating between the trades available to a presentable and outwardly charming young man on the Southport Seafront Friends of Lyinds's said KQui had a confidence about him and that when the two of them met, he seemed to latch onto Lindsay straight away Lindsay herself, on her family's account, was at first over the moon with the attention and was said to have believed that she'd found someone who loved her and would help bring up her unborn baby as his own. But with that outward charm coexisted a yoo temperament Twi would be warm and kind one moment while being cold the next, with him often showcasing a terrible temper I've already covered about the fact he was controlling But he has also been described as being paranoid That's an incredibly dangerous combination couple settled in a semi detached ground floor flat on Stamford Road in Berkdale, a residential suburb of Southport, and from the start, once the love bombing phase was over Lindsay found herself being accused of all manner of things that simply weren't true Whui accused her of cheating on him and use that as an excuse to further his controlling behaviour She took Lindsy's phone, wanted to know where she was at all times, shouted and belittled her constantly, and physically abused her. Iirony about KQuwi's cheating claims aimed at Lindseay, and this is common with cheats is that he himself was cheating on her, seeing several other women projecting his own infidelities on his wife. Given how unhappy she was in the abusive relationship, Lindsay secretly had an abortion when she fell pregnant, becausecause the idea of bringing a baby into such a toxic environment It just wasn't something she wanted to do When KQui found out, he violently attacked Lindseay, leaving her badly bruised After that, she reported him to the police. But frustratingly, all he received was an injunction, which was meant to prevent him from contacting Lindseay But as with so many domestic abusers, he managed to worm his way back into Lyindzy's life By the spring of nineteen ninety seven, Lindseay had fallen pregnant once more And throughout those nine months, she continued to be physically abused by her husband On one occasion, he tore the house up including pulling doors off the hinges, such was his hair trigger temper Lindsay arrived home in the midst of the outburst, which also saw Qui smashing the windows and door of their car Tell it was also launched out of the window, landing in the garden. Remember, not only was Lindseay pregnant, but she also had a toddler witnessing this behaviour As a result of that incident, they were kicked out of the flat by their landlord Whenples son was born, the domestic abuse and physical violence did not stop Lindsey wrote in her diary around that time that KQui had walked out on her seven times in the space of four months And it was when he did so that he cheated on it brave move to try and get away from her husband, Lindseay would eventually find a place of her own thanks to the help of the Cefon Women's and Children's Aid chararity in the late summer of nineteen ninety eight but she was situated not too far away from Kuai Shortly after, she wrote in a diary Everything's great, never been better. Don't miss Mitch at all Things appeared to be on the up fora October of that same year. pair were back together once more. And just as a leopard doesn't change its spots, Qui's previous behavior continued The last time Lindsy's sister saw her alive, she had a folded piece of paper secretly slipped into her hand at the front door It was a note which read Please help me Meanwhile, in a diary which she kept hidden Lindsay wrote about the turbulent marriage just months before her murder. She wrote This book is for my kids to let them know how hard my life was and how I tried my best to bring them up on my own and let them know how much I love them. I hope you never have to go through anything that I had to go through I can say is I've done my best I hope it was good One thing I have always done since the day you were born is make sure you knew I loved you. to my two babies She was becoming more and more isolated, another tactic of abusers, as KQui had prevented as much contact with her family as possible He also financially abused Lindsay by collecting her benefits on her behalf and spending the funds without her knowledge. That made her less able to leave him because she had no money Lindseay longed for a divorce and in september nineteen ninety eight booked an appointment with a solicitor to file for what. Now it's important for the sake of context that I briefly discussed the law as it was back in nineteen ninety eight In England and Wales, there was no specific criminal offence of domestic abuse at the time And there was no statutory definition of the term Abuse was treated mainly as a series of discrete physical assaults to be prosecuted under the outdated offenses Against the Person Act eighteen sixty one and the Criminal Justice Act nineteen eighty eight I mean, it was only in nineteen ninety one, seven years before Lindseay was killed that the House of Lords ruled that a husband can be criminally liable for raping his wife, abolishing the longstanding marital rape exemption in English law As for harassment, that was only classed as a crime due to the very recently enacted Protection from Harassment Act nineteen ninety seven Other recently enacted laws included the Family Law Act nineteen ninety six, which gave victims the right to apply for a non molestation order or an occupation order power of arrest where violence had been used or threatened The Human Rights Act nineteen ninety eight had received royal assent in November of nineteen ninety eight, only thirty seven days before Linda was killed. but it was not yet in force And that relates to Lindseay because the pattern of behavior her diary described in the marriage including the policing of her movements, the surveillance, the controlling Yoo moods, and the silent hostility to her sister Paula on the doorstep, was not in and of itself, a crime in nineteen ninety eight But if we move away from all that legal stuff and bring the story back to the divorce she wanted Essentially, what she could not do was get the marriage itself recognized by the criminal law Crime We're going to take a quick break here When we return, we'll be jumping straight into this story's main timeline See you soon This Monday. com ad was created by a team of people and AI agents. Acast Acast d. com slash advertise We've now arrived at december thirteenth, nineteen ninety eight On that day, Linda saw her daughter, Lindsay for the last time Pair said what they had no idea would be their final goodbyes as Lindsseay left her mum's house that Sunday The reason Lindseay visited her mum was simply because Linda had no intention of being under the same roof as Quai. Fast forward three days to the evening of Wednesday december sixteenth, and Lindseay had plucked up the courage to tell her abusive husband that she wished for a divorce Instead of having an adult discussion with his wife and trying to understand how she felt Qi instead flew into a rage and strangled Lindseay to death in their family home Later court reporting stated that he held it on the floor for around twenty minutes while the two young children were asleep in another room of the house. Having killed his wife, KQui next turned to the one other person he could control completely He called his younger brother Elliot, who arrived at the house shortly after Elliot's immediate reaction was reportedly to tell CQui that he should go straight to the police But he refused, explaining that he would go to prison and lose his children if he did so. As a result, the two brothers proceeded to dismember Lindssey's body placing the parts in black bin liners. In the days after the killing, Qui bought huge amounts of bleach to help with the cleanup And he and Elliot distributed Lyindz's remains across several locations in and around Southport Torsso was buried in a shallow grave in scrubland next to a roller coaster at Southport Pleasureland The very place Qui had worked Her arms and legs were dumped in bushes alongside a railway line less than half a mile from the family home. Her head and hands were thrown out in the couple's domestic bin and have never been recovered cameame the cover up On Christmas Eve of nineteen ninety eight, CQui drove to Linda's house to collect Christmas presents for the children He told her that Lindseay was at home and their landline was broken B back when not everyone had a mobile remember And honestly, it wasn't exactly unusual to not hear from Lindsay based on how controlling KQui was He told her mum that she was getting ready to go out before calling her a psycho and accusing her of cheating on him Day, Christmas i told anyone who asked that Lindseay had walked out on her family, essentially abandoning him and the children By the start of nineteen ninety nine, KQui had told her friends and family different versions of where Lindsey had gone But even so, he did not formally report her as missing Her family grew increasingly suspicious because of that. Then a fair few of them started asking questions as to Lindzay's whereabouts It wasn't until early February that Lindsseay was reported as missing And it's key to note that Qui didn't do the reporting It was actually a social worker who'd been unable to make contact with Lindseay after she missed several appointments, including one with a dentist Sheh not been seen by anyone other than Quiet and Elliot for fifty three days at that point, almost two months When police questioned Lindz's family on the back of the report, they said there was no way she would have left her children. She adored them to bits And the thought of her leaving on Christmas dayay of all days was simply unfathomable When KQui was questioned, he said Lindseay had gone out drinking with friends on Christmas Eve while he stayed at home looking after the children. He claimed she'd returned home in the early hours of Christmas Day and was very drunk He carried on with this false narrative, saying she then grabbed some of her belongings and simply walked out of the house Aforeorever wanting to play the victim, he also claimed that he had seen her with another man and that she had left him for someone else. At one point he actually said that he and the children were at a market and bumped into Lindseay, which led to a heated public argument Police were instantly suspicious of Quai based on his testimony Go overboard with the lies, he then took a note to the police, which he said was from Lindseay In it, it said she'd move to Spain with a man in his head neatly tyie a bore on those infidelity claims. He also said that he saw Lindseay in a black Mercedes and that she stuck two fingers up at him Clearly this was a case of a pathological liar going into far too much detail when recollecting events that never happened, such as unnecessarily including the colour and brand of said imaginary car Detectives were soon able to find out about Quai collecting Lindsy's benefits though, something he'd continued doing after killing her To them, it cemented the fact that she had likely not run away. because she'd have no money to live off. while also giving the impression that Kuai didn't care that she'd disappeared When he was asked about the money, KQui said he took it to look after his children, who he described as being abandoned by their mum. As if things couldn't get any worse, KQui continued to strike up relationships with other women during all of this, which was also a huge red flag to the police They ended up searching the family home, including the garden, but there was no evidence of anything suspicious No forensic evidence was present to suggest Lindseay had been killed. And that fact was later accredited to Elliot's involvement given his experience as a butcher All that bleached Qiot had clearly done the intended job of cleaning the murder scene It was extremely difficult for the police to prove anything at that point, as no body had been found. Looking back, an officer said You have to prove lack of life You have to disprove life If you haven't got that physical evidence of it, if you haven't got a body It's very, very difficult. Because at the end of the day, if you do charge somebody and it goes before a jury, it's a huge issue for a jury to try and determine a person's guilt of murder without that physical evidence So whilst I was always certain in my own mind that KQuai killed Lindseay The fact that we didn't have a body was always uppermost in my mind to think Well, are we going to be able to charge them at the end of the day And if we do Are we able to convince a jury without evidence of a body So that thought's always there One thing they had on him was the fraud though So he was arrested and charged with that offense relating to Lindsy's benefits Before that, he was given a community service order, spending the time working at a charity shop Background, Lindseayy's family putull missing posters and addressed the public, begging them to help find Lindseay Whatquied next is something we hear about far too often in heartbreaking cases such as this. And it boggles the mind. He inserted himself slap bang in the middle of the search for Lindseay purposely framing himself in the public eye on TV as he pushed his narrative of events Back to control, doesn't it He even went to the trouble of wearing glasses during his media appearances in a vain attempt at making himself appear more intelligent I must point out that KQuai did wear glasses anyway, but not regularly haaunting Lteruring one interview, he asked Do I look like a psychopath before smiling. Throughout the rest of nineteen ninety nine, he continuously invited local and national journalists into his home to talk about how Lindseay had left him all alone to care for the children. playay the sympathy card once more He also phoned local radio stations to discuss his supposedly missing wife and even stood next to police officers while they made public appeals M Kui's most infamous TV appearance came in october nineteen ninety nine when he was a guest on ITV's This Morning, which at the time was hosted by Richard Mdler and Judy Finneiggan Body language experts would later analyze the footage and noted many inconsistencies Qui next allowed documentary maker Chris Malone and a film crew from Carlton Television to film him for an episode of the series Real Crime Over many months between late nineteen ninety nine and early two thousand, Kuoi was filmed at the home he shared with Lindseay The very one in which she was killed as well as around South Paore for an episode titled Prime suspect It went on to air in february two thousand one, a month after Cuire was convicted of Lyindy's murder and sentenced to life imprisonment director Chris Malone said of Qui He had no problems giving me access He created a lie so great he believed his own story in the end. In that documentary episode, KQui said he didn't care about being a suspect Ading that, he just wanted to find out where Lindseay was. One line in particular, Sts out Breaks my heart, he said I have to tell them one day, some psycho has killed your mum. Wh Chire was out filming, detectives from Merseyside Police's major investigations team had privately concluded that he was responsible for whatever had happened to Lindseay. A psychic even spoke to the police and supposedly gave them some eerily accurate information regarding what had happened The psychic not only said Lindsay was murdered, but also that she'd been dismembered and her body parts hidden along a railway and around a fairground By june two thousand, Lindsey's family had searched lakes and canals for her, and the police had searched Qui's home three times He began taunting them by calling up and telling them that they weren't looking in the right place They should look harder, he added. He went one step further and sent a senior investigator a box of hair dye with a message saying it would give him confidence only serve to raise their suspicions about his involvement in what happened to Lindsay And again, as with so many killers Whui couldn't keep the secret to himself? He confessed to the murder while out drinking with a friend. who in turn then did the right thing and informed the police Acting on that new lead, the police arrested KQuai and interrogated him for hours The precise chain of events regarding ChQoi's confession does vararyate between sources The part is that he did confess to the murder of Lindza He explained how he'd lost his temper after she asked for a divorce and strangled her to death Moving her body several times before placing her in the bath. He then called in his brother to help with what they did next KQui insisted his brother's involvement was limited to holding the bimbangs. But the detectives felt he was just covering for him especially given Elliot's expertise when it came to dismemberment ui then said he would take the police to where Lindse's remains were and the film crew were there with them when they made the discoveries After the formal identification of the recovered remains, the Wilson family was finally able to bury Lindseay and her funeral service was held at Southport Crematorium wi's trial began in january two thousand one at Liverpool Crown Court before mister Justice Brian Leverson. Qui initially pleaded not guilty, instead opting to claim Lindzy's death was the result of manslaughter During the trial, KQui suddenly changed his plea to guilty regarding the murder count Elliot was tried alongside him for assisting an offender and disposing of the body. Sentencing quiite to life imprisonment with a minimum term of seventeen years Mr. Justice Levverson said the following. You killed your wife as long ago as december sixteenth, nineteen ninety eight in circumstances which I accept were not premeditated What followed, however, was very different Over the next eighteen months, you embarked on a deception of breathtaking cynicism appearing on the television and radio bemoaning your wife's absence and castigating police for directing their attentions towards you.
