And it was a story that followed her throughout her life It tells the story of a young prince from a tiny asteroid who travels to Eth, teaching lessons about love, responsibility, and the human condition through his encounters with adults and a pilot stranded in the desert Sara read it many times in various languages in Fnish with a mum English with a dad and later in French at school It might seem like a small detail. But I think it says quite a lot about her. Clearly a curious child, incredibly intelligent, comomfortable moving between different worlds and cultures at the drop of a hat. Bot also played a huge role in our life from a young age. partarticularly, athletics Sarah wasn't just someone who enjoyed running around a track after school though F from it She was a genuinely talented young athlete As a child, she quickly started making a name for herself in Finland. She specialized as a sprinter and hurdler following in the footsteps of her dad, who had also been a talented runner in his younger days. Roy had represented his school as a teenager. and even became an East London schoolools champion and it wasn't long before Sara was achieving impressive results of her own. By the age of thirteen, she was already ranked among the twenty fastest girls in Finland She soon joined her local athletics club and threw herself into training Dad supported her every step of the way And when he could trained alongside her rununning through forests and racing around the track Eventually though, Sarah became so quick that Roy simply couldn't keep up anymore At fifteen years old, she tralled to Washington, DC in the United States, where she competed alongside American colleges and ran the final leg for a relay team that took first place. But going for a teenager from Helsinkke There was every chance that athletics could have become her future But unfortunately, as with so many up and coming athletes, injuries sadly got in the way. peated hamstring problems and the subsequent operations needed to treat them slowed her progress considerably For many young athletes, that might have been the end of their involvement in sport but not Sara. Instead, she stayed involved by helping coach younger athletes at her club. passing on her knowledge and experience to the next generation. Her passassion for sport never disappeared even as she approached adulthood In nineteen ninety four, when Helsinki hosted the European Athletics Championships, an eighteen year old Sara landed a role on the reception team responsible for welcoming the athletes and handling accreditation It put her right at the heart of one of the biggest sporting events her country had ever hosted Because she knew athletics inside and out, she wasn't starstuck when she met some of the biggest names in the sport. She chattered with athletes including British Sprint in leegend Lyinford Christter and German track and field star Hiker Drexler. But one memory in particular from those championships stayed with her for years British Javelin thrower Steve Backley won gold, he handed his winners's bouquet to Sara treasured it so much that she preserved the flowers and displayed them in her mum's flat in Helsinkke. By the time the nineteen ninety six Summer Olympics arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sara was there too She worked in the Olympic village, helping to look after VIP guests. It was exactly the sort of environment she loved She understood sport, loved meeting people, and had an incredible talent for languages Alongside Finnish and English, Saruspoke, French, Swedish and German fluently She was even planning to learn Spanish as well Because why not After graduating from Helsinki's prestigious sports collllege, where many of Finland's top athletes completed their academic studies, Sara spent two years living in Brussels, Belgium But her ambition stretched even further. In nineteen ninety eight, she moved to England to study sports management at Northumbria University It was a degree that could have opened doors almost anywhere in the world for her but Sarah had her sights set on something specific The Olympic movement fascinated her. and working beyond the scenes at major international sporting events was the sort of career she dreamed about. By the turn of the millennium, Saru was in the second year of her course and had settled well into lifeve in the Northeast. Anyone familiar with the area will know that Newcastle and the surrounding coastal towns have long had a large student population And Sara quickly became part of that community Friends described her as intelligent, confident, and outgoing She seemed to make friends wherever she went and was popular among her fellow students Like many of them, she worked part time alongside her studoodies She pulled shifts behind the bar at venues including The Time Pub in Whitley Bay and another bar called Deep. By this point, she'd been working in hospitality for around eighteen months, having started shortly after arriving in England in october nineteen ninety eight She also worked in the gym at Ry Hill College in Newcastle It was fair to say she was a grafter At home, Sarah shared a flat with a female friend on Garden Terrace in Earsden, a village sitting between Newcastle and the North Sea coast As Easter approached in the year two thousand, Sara had plenty to look forward to In fact, it's difficult to think of many students who were in a better position than she was. She'd managed to secure something many people would only dream about a work placement with the organizing committee for the Sydney Olympics The Sydney games were just a few months away and would go on to attract more than ten thousand athletes from almost two hundred countries And that wasn't even the end of her plans Turning from Australia, Sarah intended to spend a year working as an intern at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lozan, Switzerland Only after that would she return to Newcastle to complete the final part of her degree Everything she'd worked towards since she was a teenager appeared to be fallen into place. and the sky was the limit for her ambition Knowing what was just around the corner, the evening of Thursday, april twentieth, two thousand should have been one of the happiest of her life. Earlier that day, she'd phoned her dad, Roy with some exciting news The delay that had been hanging over at pllans had been sorted Australian work visa had finally come through And she was due to fly down under the following week. Roy could no doubt hear the excitement in his daughter's voice. She was finally about to head to the Olympics And that evening, april twentieth, Sarah went out with some friends from the university to celebrate Newcastle's key side was buzzing that night If you've ever been there on a bank holiday weekend, you'll know exactly the sort of atmosphere I'm on about Bars are packed, restestaurants are full and people spill out onto the pavements overlooking the River Tyne. A goodood Friday just hours away, thousands of people were out enjoying the start of the long Easter Bank holiday weekend Sara and her friends initially headed to one bar, but it was absolutely rammed. so they decided to move elsewhere and eventually settled on the Crown Posada The Crown Posada is one of the city's oldest watering holes, squeezed into a narrow building with several drinking areas stretching back throughout the property Compared to some of the larger bars nearby, it offered a quieter atmosphere where the friends could actually hear each other speak At around ten PM, another friend joined them at the bar and brought with him a farewell gift for Sara before a trip to Australia It was a distinctive fish shaped corkscrew Nobody knew it at the time, but that small present would later become an important detail in the investigation The evening carried on without incident. People chattered, had a laugh and enjoyed a few drinks until around eleven ten PM when the group decided to leave the Crown Pasada Some of Sarah's friends wanted to continue their night and head to a club But Sarah wasn't interested, saying she had work the next day and was tired Her friends tried persuading her to stay out a bit longer, as you'd expect, but she politely declined. Instead, she said her goodbyes and headed home on her own Around eleven twenty PM, she entered Monument Metro Station in Newcastle City Center CCTV cameras captured her inside the station as she made her way towards the platform She then boarded the train at eleven thirty five PM It was the last one headed towards Whitley Bay Nothing appeared unusual at first glance Nobody reported seeing Sara, or a woman match in her description, upset, distressed or in the company of anyone suspicious. She was just a young woman making her way home after a night out, like so many others on the train were. Investigators later believe Sara got off the metro sometime between eleven fifty and eleven fifty five PM From there, it should have only taken around five to ten minutes to walk back to the flat she shared with her friend in Earsden. But Sara never made it home After leaving the station, she walked towards the Greyhorse pub. Cross the buser Air one hundred eight six jel carriagewar and continued along a footpath running alongside the main road. Somewhere along that short journey, only a few hundred yards from safety She was attacked We're going to take an ad break here. When we return, we'll pick up the story from when Sarah's body was discovered just a stone's throw away from her front door See you soon You're listening to this podcast, so I know you've got a curious mind. Listen to this ACast show, A free on Amazon Music with your Prime membership, or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts Welcome back The following morning was Good Friday And for most people in the area, it was the start of a long holiday weekend It's a welcome break from the stresses of work and school But for one elderly couple walking their dog, It became a day they would never forget As they made their way through a field close to Sarah's home, they spotted something beneath a hedge. When they went closer, they realized they were looking at the body of a young woman police immediately. The body was that of Sarah Cameron who was found naked, devoid of every item of clothing, but her socks The location was heartbreakingly close to home, as her body lay roughly one hundred yards from her flat, almost within sight of her front door Postmortem examination later established that Sarah had died from asphyxiation And as officers searched the surrounding area, more disturbing discoveries followed Items of clothing believed to belong to Sara were recovered from a wooded area within the grounds of South Wellfield Middle School several hundred yards from where a body had been found A few days later, what were believed to be Sarah's trousers were discovered in an alleyway in Wellfield, Whitley Bay The locations immediately raised questions and led to investigators believing the person responsible may have been familiar with the area A local perhaps. Unless the killer had stumbled blindly across fields in darkness The route suggested it was someone who knew the network of local footpaths and shortcuts like the back of their hand While detectives began piecing together Sarah's final movements, Roy's world was falling apart hundreds of miles away in Devon He later recalled the moment police arrived at his door I was just about to go to bed when a police officer from Payton came and told me what had happened, he said Ry continued, saying I don't know of an adjective to describe the night and the day after that. It's a blur took me until the following evening to get up to the hospital where she was lying Detectives now faced a race against time to find out who had killed Sara For hours and days that followed, Northumbria pololice launched one of the biggest murder investigations the area had seen in half a century They quickly established that Sara's final journey home would be crucial. and logically deem that someone must have seen something challenge was figuring out who that was Almost immediately, officers appealed for help tracing a man who had been spotted in Sarah's final moments. One local resident recalled seeing Sarah walking down park Lane towards Earsden shortly before midnight. But what stood out to him wasn't Sarah herself Rather, there was a man nearby The witness remembered seeing the man walk past him heading in the same direction as Sara He then watched as the man crossed the road and moved directly behind her As Sarah turned onto Earsden Rad, the man followed. And according to the witness, he was running by that point. Then another witness came forward Pass in motorists reported seeing a man chasing after a woman shortly after midnight At the time, he assumed it was simply a boyfriend trying to catch up with his girlfriend And to him, nothing seemed unusual enough to raise the alarm Shortly after that, somewhere nearby, a brief scream rang out, heard by another witness It lasted only a moment and was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared Police now believe they could be looking at Sara's final moments alive. The man described by witnesses was white of medium height with dark hair and believed to be in his late teens or early twenties, the latter being the more likely option Witnesses thought he might have been wearing dark trousers Tiners with white sections and a two tone fleece style jacket. The arms appeared lighter than the main body of the garment Dectives stressed that they simply wanted to speak to this guy, as they believed he could have been the last person to see Sara alive Leading the investigation was Detective superintendent Steve Bolam pressure mounted and fear spread through the local community DS Boolla made it clear that he and his team of detectives were keeping an open mind in relation to the motive for Sarah's murder. In the meantime, he urged women to take what he called sensible precautions while the killer remained at large Meeting in well lit places, traveling with others where possible, and making sure people knew their whereabouts became common advice throughout the Northeast When the full extent of the postmortem examination results came back, they painted a deeply distressing picture of what had happened on that Thursday evening Sara had been sexually assaulted and strangled, and it was clear there were signs of a struggle Investigators also believed her attacker may have been left covered in mud. Heavy rain had fallen in the area around the time of the attack, turning sections of the ground soft and boggy So forensic opportunities were emerging But so many questions Police became particularly interested in CCTV footage from the metro system Officers began painstakingly reviewing hours of recordings from stations including Shire More, where Sarah was believed to have left the train that night. Now, back in two thousand, CCTV wasn't nearly as widespread or as high quality as it is, or at least can be today Dives often had to work through countless hours of ultra grainy footage frame by frame in the hope of spotting something significant. At the same time, officers appealed for information about several missing items Sarah's handbag had vanished for a start It was described as a sturdit brown leather bag with a flap over front and a large buckle Roughly eight by ten inches in size, it had only recently been given to her as a present Other missing possessions included her jacket, watch, a bottle of perfume, and the distinctive fish shaped cockscrew she'd received from her friend just hours before her death Investigators believed any of those items could hold vital clues, and public appeals generated a huge response Passengers who had travelled on the metro that evening began coming forward ives suddenly found themselves sorting through a flood of fresh information A week after Sarah's body was discovered, officers took the step of recreating her final journey whichich isn't something we hear about much these days Back then it was much more common a practice. A blonde police womoman with a similar short, spiky hairstyle to Sara, dressed in clothes matching those she'd worn on the night she died, retraced her final route. The idea was a simple one Someone might have seen Sara that night without realizing how important what they'd witnessed would later become. By recreating the journey, detectives hope to jog people's memories and encourage new witnesses to come forward While all that was going on, police also carried out exhaustive searches around Earsden and South Wellfield Officers combed through streets, gardens and open land, conducting many house to house inquiries in the process Bin bags and dust bins were examined as search teams worked methodically through the area inch by inch, looking for anything that might have been discarded by Sarah's killer Behind closed doors, Sarah's family were enduring their own nightmare Initially, her devastated parents were warned that ongoing forensic examinations could mean waiting as long as eight months before they were able to bury their daughter Just imagine being told that Not only had they lost their only child But they were also been told they might not be able to properly lay it to rest for the best part of a year As spring was preparing to turn into summer, the investigation expanded. In may two thousand, detectives suddenly found themselves examining a potential breakthrough nearly thirty miles away from the murder scene in Hartleypool Dogwalk had discovered a leather jacket in the Easington Road area. But for whatever reason, he hadn't reported it straight away Instead, it simply hung it on a nearby tree It was only after watching TV news reports about Sarah's murder and hearing descriptions of her clothing that he began wondering whether the jacket could be connected to her death. The man soon returned to retrieve the jacket and handed it in to Harleypool police Officers there contacted Northumbria pololice and forensic tests were carried out But unfortunately, it wasn't Sara's jacket leaving yet another dead end as far as leads were concerned On may twenty fourth, two thousand, the case received national attention when Sarah's murder featured as the opening story on BBC's Crime watchatch You can watch the full episode yourself on YouTube. For deccades, Crime watchatch had become essential viewing for detectives hoping to generate fresh leads Time and again, cases have been solved because someone sitting at home suddenly recognized a face, a vehicle, or a detail that hadn't seemed important before During the program, DS Boolam also addressed speculation linking Sara's murder to another killing. Days earlier, twenty one year old Pamela Ladler, who was five months pregnant, had been murdered on an isolated footpath just twenty miles away from where Sarah's body was found The media inevitably drew comparisons Both victims were young women whose murders had taken place in the Northeast. DS Bolham firmly rejected suggestions that the cases were connected during his appearance on Crimeewatch As it later transpired, he was right Pamala's killer was an entirely different person named Mark Madad The Crimeewatch appeal proved worthwhile though, as they often teter, as new information flooded in from viewers who'd phoned in with names of possible suspects People contacted the program claiming they'd witnessed events connected to Sara's final movements and one name in particular reportedly caught detectives' attention Whose name it was is not information made readily available Meanwhile, despite earlier fears of lengthy delays, Sarah's funeral ended up taking place on june second, two thousand just over six weeks after a death The service was held at Whitley Bay Crematorium and attended only by close family and friends A second service was later held in Helsinkkee Afterwards, her ashes were buried in the gardens of Helsinkke Crematorium allowing her to be remembered in the country where she'd been born and raised Back on Tyneside, detectives continued releasing CCTV images. foootage from four Lane ends and long Benton metro stations showed three men officers wanted to identify and eliminate from their inquiries Two of the images later been published in the Whitley Bay Guardian One showed a man inside Deep nightclub at the Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay shortly before ten thirty PM on the evening Sarah died O was particularly intriguing because it showed a man at Long Benton Metro station shortly after eleven thirty PM At one point he could be seen crossing the tracks before boarding a train heading towards the coast. The same train Sara was traveling on More importantly, he appeared to be wearing a two tone jacket, remarkably similar to the one witnesses had described seeing on the man following Sara By July, detectives announced a significant breakthrough after forensic scientists recovered a DNA profile they believed belonged to Carus's Killer Now today, that might not sound remarkable. But in the year two thousand, DNA technology was still developing or beit at a rapid pace quickly transforming murder investigations in a way I hadn't previously been able to Tives they offer genuine h and they announced plans to conduct one of the largest voluntary DNA screening exercises ever seen in the region Men living around Earsden were invited to provide samples for comparison, which led to an initial one hundred and fifty men volunteering That figure soon doubled before climbing again point where by mid August, approximately eight hundred men had been tested. Yet despite the enormous effort, there was still no match to the DNA sample recovered from the crime scene Sara's killer remained unidentified. Residents then planted a memorial shrub at the entrance to the area where Sarah had lived It was a simple gesture. one that reflected how deeply the murder had affected the local community Before long, another disturbing incident emerged On august ninth, two thousand, a twenty two year old woman was sexually assaulted after getting off a metro train in Whitley Bay According to reports, a man had first approached her on board the train before getting off at the same station As she walked away, he followed her and carried out an indecent assault before running off towards the town library The similarities were concerning enough for detectives to investigate whether the attack could somehow be linked to Sarah's murder The suspect was described as being roughly six foot three Clean shaven with short dark hair and a medium build. whether there was actually any connection remains unclear By September, investigators were still chasing every possible lead with one appeal focusing on a vouxall Nova Witnesses had reported seeing an older dark colored nerva parked near the A one hundred eighty six on the evening Sarah was killed Later that same night at around eleven thirty PM, a mid blue no showing visible rust around the driver's door reportedly seen parked at Shyamore Metro Station Detectives wanted to identify whoever owned the vehicle But despite months of appeals, CCTV reviews, forensic testing, witness statements, and hundreds upon hundreds of DNA samples The investigation still lacked the one thing it needed most identity of Sarah Cameron's killer For almost four years, he remained a ghost. Until one Friday the thirteenth, the breakthrough finally came february thirteenth, two thousand four was a precise date And at around six thirty that morning, officers from Northumbria Police, assisted by ones from Sussex Police arrested a twenty nine year old man in connection with Sara's murder After years of unanswered questions, someone was finally sitting in a police interview room having to explain himself The following evening, Valentine's Day The suspect was formally charged with her murder The arrest marked the culmination of an enormous investigation Over the years, detectives had DNA tested around four thousand seven hundred men and carried out inquiries at approximately four thousand homes Now they believe they finally had their man The suspect was called Michael Robinson He was a former soldier and bus driver living on Bayview Road in New Haven, Sussex And on february sixteenth, two thousand four appeared before magistrates in North Shields. A week later, he appeared in court again before being remanded in custody pending further hearings Pleay and directions hearing eventually took place that June, Robinson, by then thirty years old, spoke only briefly He entered not guilty pleas to murder an attempted rare W the hearing lasting only fifteen minutes application for bail was made at that time and the case was set on course for trial Another issue surrounding the investigation began attracting attention as well It emerged that some of the men whose images have been released from CCTV footage during the inquiry had been completely innocent Quions were asked about whether publishing those images had exposed them to suspicion, intimidation or even the risk of retaliation from members of the public Nives defended their actions. They argued that identifying the people in the footage had been a necessary step in a murder investigation where every lead had to be explored But as it turned out, the key to solving the case hadn't come from CCTV It had come from something far more mundane a neighbor dispute You see, in early two thousand three, Robinson became involved in an argument with a neighbor in Waterville Road, North Shields Police attended the scene following an allegation that Robinson had damaged a door As part of routine procedure at the time, officers took a DNA swab from inside his mouth Nothing about the incident suggested it would become one of the most significant developments in the Sarah Cameron murder investigation But when Robinson's DNA profile was entered onto the database, it later matched semen recovered from Sara's body. By then, Robinson had moved away from the Northeast and was living in Sussex But even so, police officers tracked him down and arrested him Just like that. One of the region's most troubling unsolved murders was no longer a mystery preparations for trial continued evidence against Robinson Overwhelming The case then took another dramatic turn on september twenty eighth, two thousand four, when a court heard that Robinson intended to change his pleas and admit responsibility for what he'd done With that, the truth of what happened that night finally began to emerge It turned out that Robinson was indeed the very man captured on CCTV at Long Benton Metro station He was the same man witnesses had described wearing a two tone jacket and the same man seen running in the station. When questioned, Robinson claimed he'd been crossing the tracks to check train times But the reality of what happened afterwards was far more sinister. Robinson had been drinking heavily on april twentieth, two thousand with work colleagues throughout the day and later that night unknowingly boarded the same metro train as Sara His original plan was simple enough He intended to spend the night at his brother's house on Grange Avenue, not far from where Sarah lived But as he got off the train and saw her walking ahead of him, Something inside him changed. Instead of turning off towards his brother's street, Robinson walked past it and continued following Sara.
