You know, every sports fan has a favorite movie. And over the past few weeks, we've sort of tasked you, our awesome listeners, the great community that we have here with sending us your one all time favorite sports movie And then a quick reason why. And we got so many responses. So let me first say Thank you to everybody who called us, who emailed us. We obviously aren't going to get to everyone, but we heard and read and appreciate them, and you guys are just the best. Basically, our goal here was to get to the bottom of this question. What Does your favorite sports movie Say And so we had to call in an expert We went and got The manan with some of the internet's funniest takes on movies and especially movies from the nineties Comedian Rob Anderson, Rob is known best for his viral breakdowns of TV and film on his Instagram account, Heart Throb Anderson. You can currently find him on tour worldwide with his show Are you Afraid of the nineties, where he actually just wrapped up a swing through Australia and said hello to Chris. I'm sure. And if you can't make it to one of those shows, it is also available now on YouTube Rob Anderson. Okay, Rob, thank you so much for being here for this. I'm so excited to do this with you. You are an expert in the field. Let's go ahead and get started Our first movie Hi, this is Marge calling from Aurora, Illinois I'm calling to tell you my favorite sports movie of all time, a league of their own. I was a girl who played sports and there were so few movies for us see ourselves in movies. Women of many different gender expressions playing sports. It was so cool. My name is Brittneany favorite sports movie is a link of their own Hi. I am gay ? My name is Des. I am from Denver. My programs are D her. My favorite movie is a League of their own because I will always be the biggest fan of my big sister. I am a little sister through and through. and Bomez question, which I wanted to ask anyway Did she drop the ball intentionally at the end? Love you, mean it. love you, mean it. What a great selection. We got so many calls about this movie. The movie, of course, a League of their own released in July of nineteen ninety two. I'll read the logline. This is during World War two, sisters, Doty and Kit joined the first female pro baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amid their own growing rivalry. So Rob, what does it say A league of their own is your favorite sports movie? Lesbian for sure, I think that being gay nailed it on the like that you' really nailing it there alsoso. Aren't they all straight though? In the movie, I think they may have all been straight. The culture is so gay though. Yeah It really is. It's very theyy. It is And I do think it is funny that it's happeninguring w warim because they're traveling a lot in this movie areren't there gasoline rations happening? Like whyy are we just burning fuel traveling The girls gott to play ball? It's very important. Girls gott to get around and play ball I love this movie I love this movie so much. One of my favorite movies as a I mean, it' it's got everything. Yes. You've got Madonna We' got Rosy O'Donnell You've got a Da D who I think was nominated for a Golden Gobe for this for best actress in a comedy the Oscar though. No That is a fault of the Academy. I have to say. L this movie, sometometimes you look back at the movies that were nominated for Oscars and you're like, what was that?? Like I don't, But this is an iconic is it is a cinema canon really. It's one of the greatest sports movies ever made. I'm so glad so many people many So many people love it. We also it's it's given us, I think One of the better Halloween costumes, sports themed Halloween costumes being a Rockford peach, there's just nothing like it. It's immediately iconic. You see the pink, you go, I know what this is. I get what this is I love that I love that. Just as important to be good at baseball, softball aseball in this Y baseball as it is to have manners and etiquette. Like they have like an etiquette training situation. likeike why do we care? Like why does etiquette matter if you're playing this game? I have to say. Yeah it makes for a great movie. It does. And also unfortunately, I do feel like that does still uphold. I feel like for whatever reason they still go like girls I know you're punching each other in the face in the octagon, but could you be nice to each other about it? Could we maybe do it like sisters? Oh my God, that's so true. Can we do it gently and daintly? God, That's one of my favorite scenes Smile more, please For real One of my favorite scenes though is that finishing school. What I can't think of a girl's name character in the movie that really struggles with the finishing school of it all because she's very It's not her. That's not that's not her vibe She's not finished. No, she hasn't started, really. She has yet to begin. So she's certainly not finishing. Also, I forgot it was called finishing school. It's also like life you have to finish Before you can debut. Right, which is about etiquet. It's a weird way to center etiquette around life. Tom Hanks as a drunk. Oh, everybody's in this. Yeah, Tom Hanks as a lovable I mean, really, truly So drunk at the beginning of this movie, but he it's heartwarming. He comes around. You also get no crying in baseball. One of the better quotes from from a sports movie. so this is like ti. I think for me, if this is your favorite sports movie You're good. Yeah Probably gay and you're good. Yeah. it's a great It says a lot about you. You're my kind of person because I I mean I don't know Watching a sport live isn't something that I'm always going to immediately do. I love how gently you said that. Now watching a sport live in person immediately, not me. Clips, sure, but a movie absolutely, I think is. Yeah. And I feel like this has a lot of heart this movie All heart All heart and some finishing But oh, and speaking of the finish, I guess to harken back to a question that was asked, I believe it was Des who asked The dropped ball at the end of the game which is a debate that lives on. Um, you know I feel as strongly about it as everybody else. I feel like the nuance of it is kind of Nice, whether it's dropped on purpose to sort of passass the torch deliberately to your little sister or if you drop it by accident and the torch is passed anyway. Either way, I think the ambiguity of it is kind of nice I'm just getting out of having to choose a side.. I could see both sides. That's definitely the intention, I think is what it is. And it's meant to spark conversation. And what do you think? Well, I just want to be liked in life. So when I say something that maybe people disagree with, something so serious is the ending of this movie. just I play in the middle of the fieldice see. Yeah. Yeah is. And so what we're saying is Whether she dropped it intentionally or not We will rule on your behalf Let represent you. It's our stump speech. We should make every political candidate say, did she drop it on purpose? No. Seriously. Yeah. We'll vet them that way. becausecause whatever we're doing right now is wor. It's not working. It's not wor. Let's try this. We'll try it Okay, let's move on to our next movie. Yeah, okay, Isabellele, playay our next movie Hi, it's Dan. I live in Gilderland, New Yor My favorite sports movie is Miducks two because it makes no sense. The tournament they say is double elimination, but they have standings. o minutes for roing is not a real penalty. They player to the roster in the middle of the tournament. I love it It makes no sense. Well you mean it Love you mean it. It does make no sense. Now D two, it's worth noting, released in March of nineteen ninety four. It is, of course, the second in a series. The first was released in nineteen ninety two and the third is released in nineteen ninety six. So we were for a period there getting a mighty Ducks film E two years So lucky. So how lucky we were, we didn't even know. Right. The logline for this one, Gordon Bombay's Ducks Rurn with new additions to take on the best of the world at the junior Goodwill Games, Can they mesh as a team to beat the unstoppable? Iceland? And so Rob, what does it say if what does it say about Dan in New York that D two is his favorite sports movie? probablyably grew up in the Midwest. It feels like a midwestern quality to love this movie. I do I think The laundry list of things that make absolutely no sense followed up by It's my favorite movie it's giving like a virgo who is having a good time with life. You know, you're seeing all the faults in things and you're really enjoying them because it's I'm here for the. What else am I going do, you know? It's I love that those are all the specific things about the sport that don't make sense, but there are plenty of other things. like why is all of Team USA coming from Minnesota Yeah you know, likees. The ducks are the best that we have in the entire country and Iceland is somehow like very Soviet Union. Yes. they're treated like Germany Russia and you're like, it's Iceland They' like I don't know anything about them except that they're all related. So I don't know why we fear them so. I think it's probably just because they have like a Distinct look It isn't problematic to use and casting a villain Yeah. I don't know if you were thinking that far ahead in the nineties about anything probleic Problematic wasn't even No, it wasn't even a concept. But I think that the antagonistic villain, this is a theme in a lot of sports movies, especially kids movies, always giving Soviet Union or like some militant situation no matter where they're from or what they're doing. So they just chose Iceland for this movie, I guess U But it's quite enjoyable to watch. I mean scrappy underdogs against a clean polished, very blonde scary opponent Who doesn't love that? The roster, they keep adding new people me can you do that? I don't think so There's also a point where in a very important scene, somebody stops to shoot their penalty shot. They at the end and you can't do that. If you it's over. So a lot of it doesn't add up. Roping is not a penalty. as Dan mentioned Just a lot of crazy stuff happen. You got a hockey player who can't stop. Is that this movie The thing about the Mighty Ducks is that they are as a compliment formulaic as for a child, you need to know where you are in the movie. And so I is this this is the one obviously with the guy with the lasso. Yeah. This is also Julie the Mendz and Dayne Robertson. stop and the p Okay, and they are doing a lot of trick shop. The B Bothers But also as well p And I also and Julie the Cat Gaffney Yes. Yeah the one that starts with the roller blading through the mall That'sro. Yeah. D two is the best of the Mighty Ducks movies. I agree. I think it goes two, one, three. Remember much or three Yeah, it's like home alone Yeah. two one three. No. no, three didn't have a Cly Hoken, so. that's right, but I digress. I think that the other part of this actually, this is from the first movie. it's all blending is that it's actually all a punishment for him to coach these kids Yeah because he was drunk driving.. I mean crazy. If you're driving drunk, you go to prison. Yeah. You don't coach kids. get a bunch of kids. That's absolutely absurd. That scene, I mean, first scene, I feel like he pulls up in a limo in the back of a And he's got, well, this is my punishment. I've got to coach these. I can be a mentor to children. It doesn't make anyy sense, but yet, I love it so much. I had so many little boyfriends come from movies like this when I was a little girl Like Charlie Conway, that was my boyfriend.. You were dating them all in your head. Yes, exactly. That one hundred percent was my boyfriend. And I believe this came out before Casper 'cause once Casper came out Oh, absolutely. Casper was my boyfriend. I mean, not Dein Saa. Oh ghost. That soft little ghost. Wait, that is the first time I've ever heard that take. It's usually the opposite because it's embarrassing is No, it really is. I mean, he's just like a When he came out as Devin Saa, I was like, well, I' I'm not the hot one in my group of friends so I'm not getting him, back weird little ghost with the cheeks. Oh, you're already shooting down you were already like for my for my own sake. Okay. Yeah. Yes. I was I already knew. Even fictionally, you didn't want to be rejected That's exactly that's exact right. I always like I't I knew Justin Timberlake wasn't for me You know what I mean? But JC I had a shot with So he was my favorite. At least not Chris Kirpatrick. You're like, o I just didn't love myself. You know what I mean? You had some respect but I respected myself, I just didn't love myself y. Right ye All right, D two My Ducks, shut out Somehow only a twenty percent score on rotten tomatoes. I know. And we've got a lot to address as a country, but I think we should start there. Why is let's get that up I mean, why were we taking it so seriously? I do feel like that has changed. Yeah. We now look at movies as they're whimsy. Yeah take what it is. Come on now. Yeah. And just enjoy it. It's kids playing hockey It's also crazy to think that the hockey team that still exists named after this movie franchise came between the first and the second Chilei named a full franchise The mighty they're the ducks now, but the It didn't exist between two. I would have thought it came after my memory was telling me it came after the second one of how good the se, but they did it in between. Now, did the studio sponsor them? and they just like with the There was a Disney related because they're an Anahim. it was like a Disney related thing. but I think since they have sort of Mostly split for it's called Anahim. They didn't have it in Minneapolis Minnesota They put in Anahim where Disney land. Y. I mean, that's a little fake to me, honestly. L they're pretty they were good this year. They made it to the post season. Oh, they're still around. Yeah, they're still around Just the ducks, though, just the Anahheim ducks. don't they're not mighty. Okay. And they're not a Disney property anymore. I don't think. Okay. But I I had no idea did Yeah Isn't that neat? That is cool. Ain't that neat. All right, let's do our next movie. Here we go Hi, this is Bill from New Jersey. Our favorite movie is just because it was a miracle on this happened when I was four years old. It's something that I bonded with with my father. And now I have a son who has played hockey in the last eighteen years. He's graduating high school. and we bond over that movie, something that I bonded with my father, and it just makes me feel like so much in my My son, what I saw and my father who, you know he never met So love you and M. Thankk you It was so sweet. It really was. Miracle is the movie, released February of two thousand four. It is the true story of Herb Brooks, the player turned coach who led the nineteen eighty US Olympic hockey team to victory over the seemingly invincible Soviet squad What does it say, Rob, if Miracle is your favorite sports movie I think you like a little bit of terror like there's something militant or terrorizing about this. Like this coach Brooks, I think his name is. he's very He shows a lot of tough love. So I think that is definitely a quality that you would have or at least respect like maybe your dad was like a tough love kind of guy. But I will also say personal anecdote, I was hooking up with a guy for a few weeks who I had nothing in common with. And he has only seen one movie over and over and over and it is miracle Im sorry. In his whole Every movie I'd ever mentioned, he's like, what, what what? And he watched Miracle like once a week. What When that is all I think about whenever I hear miracles. And I noticeed you didn't describe that person as your current partner. so I feel like maybe you went that's crazy and bounce. I mean, any movie to just watch once a week other than maybe like I don't even know what mine would be. out cold for me. Really? Yeah. Wer grandma's boy. S real piece of shit just m. You know, Just something nasty that you can go. Oh, I didn't even notice how funny that is. But it would have be miracle. No it wouldn't be miracle because miracle iss based on a true story, which is why it's always hard for me to go. That's my favorite sports movie it's That's a great movie, but The real thing was better. It was a movie moment In real life. we got to I mean, I wasn't alive I'm too young to have been alive when it actually happened, of course. But I'd rather watch in that scenario like the people who were there talk about it in like a docu series. I like documentary So I'm not this is I want to be clear, I'm not saying I don't like miracle and I actually really love the way Bill described what he liked about it and how it's connected men through generations because obviously if I wasn't alive for it Bill's child was not alive for it. But I just For me, it can't be my favorite because it's just like reenacting the cool sports thing that. I feel the same way about anything that happened in real. I don't think there's a single movie Titanic is the only example that I would put as like I do like that because we don't have like interviews from back then, you know, when have people being like, you know, we just mov To me the movie is real. I was going to say and unfortunately, this is I think we're going to run into this a lot with the way we do stuff now. I'm gonna to misreember that details from the movie actually happened Oh absolutely. I'm going to do I can tell especially when I'm I'll say in my eighties, but I bet it starts in my fifties. I'm going to start conflating fiction with fact because I watched the fictionalized version. There are a lot of like, I mean the old people that held hands. I That's real. I know. actuallyually I do think it is. But how would they know if they held hands when they don hope when she drops it into the Oh that was fast. That has to be one hundred percent has to be Anyway, that's miracle. That's the discussion of Miracle. That one best sports movie at the Esps, that's obviously a really respected awards that we do here in sports No you're not being sarcastic after No I am. I mean, they're not like, disisrespected but Award shows are funny in sports because we have the sports te who win rightight But then again, Best Sports movie, no one else is giving that out. So that's probably one of the more respected Sespies. And it wasn't gonna to win a film award. so that was where nominated for a crritics's choice award. Was it? For B Family film? Oh, that's not a real category. I'm sorry. And it won Best intergenerational film, much to the point of Bill who called in, the voicemail that started us off. Best intergenerational film at the at an award at a different award show at the at the AARP awards It won an AARP or was it just nominated? No, it won that one. Okay would would not we have enough respect for it to not mention it if it was just a nomination. These are called like the movies for Grownups Awards or something? Are they? I think they are called the movie. Have you been up for one before? I mean, I'm trying. It's my goal Say. Movies for grrown up. I love that. Yeah. All right, let let's go Okay next movie Hey, Katie and the casualtty. this is Katie from Southern California. a young burgeoning gay dis like second Thank you vir virgining gay love spended like Beckam moie that is not inherently gay, spiritually gay If know I me this is Margaret from Chicago I wanted to say that my people is Bend it Like Beckham. I love that it was foundationally built on female friendriendship. Hey, this is Zanny from Cincinnati, Ohio. The greatest sports movie of all time is Bend it Like Beckham, unquestionably, a movie that really had a vice grip on the sleepovers of middle school girls across the Midwest, the perfect movie. It is centered in sports. it is centered in women achieving in sports And it's got an exceptional bow cut. What more could you love you meanute. We got a lot of calls about Bendit L Beckham released April of twenty twenty two in the UK, March of twenty twenty March of two thousand two thousand two, I assume that's supposed to say, April of two thousand two in the UK, March of two thousand three in the United States follows Jess Boma, who dreams of playing professional football, but her Sikh parents have plans for her, a law degree in a marriage. Jules, a white female striker, spots Jess playing football and invites her to join the local women's team. It is sisterhood of the Traveling pants vibes for sports, I feel. But it's soccer. Yes. football sorry. ye. So you know. Yes, yes, ye. Fotball.. Of course, we are international here. cater to our international audience So what does it say if Bend it likeike Beckham is someone's favorite sports movie It's giving girlhood. Yeah.'s it's defeinitely giving girlhood and also Like You've got a secret talent You know, you've got someone who's got a secret talent and nobody would know about it except one person who sees it in them. I see very lady Gaga on that press run and there's there a room full of people. That is what she was thinking of Bend like back when she said that you all saw her channeling. Yeah She is the yes, that is what is giving. and it's one of my favorites, honestly. Yeah, it's like a beautiful story outside of even the sports of it for me. It's like a story of female friendship girls believing in each other, being your true self, going against growing up Becoming your own person, realizing your own individuality against the backdrop of your parents and maybe what they expect for you. It's coming of age. through soccer. It is wild though that her parents were that against her. They They acted like her playing soccer was like her joining a gang. I know. Like they almost wanted her to join a gang. Like show your parents how bad you can be. I pregnant. So now I'm pregnant with dad's baby This could get really bad, mom. so let me play soccer please. Now now in context, I wantan to play soccer. Not so crazy. This movie also like there were a lot of things like they get their noses pierced at one point and they're like, whoa girls. girls. bad girls do it well This and I feel like this and she's the man. Did she's the man come out around the same time as this? It had to have because in my mind These are related. B, awesome time for Girl movies about sports She's the man. Was she playing a sport in this? Yeah, didnid't she pretend Yeah I think't she played soccer? Yeah, she played soccer She pretended to be her brother so that she could I do remember that. that binds. Yeah. So this would you consider that a sports movie? I would I mean, I on Google, it says a comedy slash sport. Oh go. A sports comedy. I knew it was built based off of twwelfth night It's a Shakespeare plot So you said that like we all knew that. is Any movie. Oh, that's like that's like what was the Cisco movie that was based off of a Shakespeare? They really did that with all of our movies from childhood. Yeah. We're actually just like, oh, that's Serano de Burgerac. and you're like, what do you mean T ten things I hate about you was alsoes midsummer night's dream. much much about nothing. Yeah. I still don't know the difference between all those Shakespeare. They were really sneaking them into us. I know, and they didn't, they still didn't get through to me. I still you have to talk to them talk to me about them in the context of the movie. otherwise I don't It's, you know, twelf night and're like huh,'s Amanda Bindes is a boy. Oh yeah. the b. Of Yeah, fantastic. things I hate about you was the taming of the shrew. We were wrong.n my gosh cut all that out. Here's what we will do. We'll go to break. We'll go to break and get our heads on straight. We'll refresh our minds on Shakespeare plays. So if that comes back up We will prepare. We'll get it right. Isabella, why don't you go ahead and play us our next movie This is Marn from Minnesota. I wanted to win on my favorite sports movie. It has to be remember the Titans. It is iconic. It is something I watched all the time growing up. Denzel Washington, young Ryan Gosling, even younger Hayen Pins here. It's an incredible cast. One of my favorite movie quotes that my friends and I always call in response L that So sad. This is Amy from St. Louis. My favorite sports movie is Remember the Titans because That was when I realized sports can solve racism I mean, obviously not, but also that became my favorite soundtrack for every movie and it still stands Lo you Un it. Oh yeah, that really was like the soundtrack era, I feel like of those movies. A lot of these movies have. Okay, so remember the Titans released in September of two thousand. In nineteen seventy one, Virginia High School football was everything to the people of Alexandria, but when the school board was forced to integrate All black school with an all white one, the foundation of football's tradition Test This movie won Best Picture at the two thousand one Image Awards. And as was mentioned in those voicemails, hell of a cast. Really? yes, absolutely. And so what does it say about you, if yourre a favorite sports movie is remember the Titans I think it's one of the best football movies ever made That and probably Rudy. I think those two are really. But I think it says that you don't just care about football. you care about other things too. Like you love football, but the social dynamics are just as important. You like a little drama You know, because they're I feel like that almost is more important than the game in a lot of ways. Yes. So I think you're pretty Well balanced person that likes a little bit of drama. And you've got interest outside of sports. You see that sports can be I know Amy walked it back there when she said, sports can solve racism. Obviously not. But it shows that they can at least be a place where progress is made and conversations are had. And you know that sports can be a force for good. And so if that's your favorite sports movie, I think Yeah, they do a pretty good I mean, it's a pretty heavy handed thing to tackle racism in with a sports movie. But I think they do a pretty good job with it. Yeah. Even looking back, obviously, some things feel dated. I was going to say, I do have to go, I don't think I've watched it recently enough to be able to go and it holds up Yeah, I think the emotional, I think that performances are amazing. Like like Denzel Dzel. I mean, it's the performances are great. What's Denzel's worst performance God I didn't see the new gladiator He was almost nominated. I think he was maybe be nominated for an Oscar for that. Al almost yeah, not that. I think he was actually incredible in it. I didn't see it, but I knew he was good in it. Honestly All I can think of is amazing fences. I think of amazing performances. No, I can't think of he's really good. There's gott to be one And I there's got to be one that everyone that's like a deep movie head is going like, it's this. But he's just like what if he was like in showgirls And we just did, we weren't even aw. Yeah, and he's just, honestly, he wouldn't probably knock it out of the park and show girl. thing is as you could put him in anything gar and I feel like he would have elevated it. Yeah Crazy's just such an incredible actor U okay All right, shall we move on to our next movie Yeah. yeah Let's do it. Let's do it This is Shannon calling from Southern California. My favorite sports movie is Rookie of the Year, just because I think if you're a little kid growing up who loves sports, that is basically the dream come true for everyone and just the pure look of panic and shock on all the kid' faces when he throws the home run ball back and gets it all the way to home plate just will never cease to amaze me. This is Lindsay from New Jersey and my favorite sports movie is Rookie of the Year It was the one that we rented from the blockbuster all the time. Now looking back on it, it's a ridiculous movie.. But You know, I can't wait to show it to my two year old. Have you've seen it? Yeah. It is a ridiculous movie. It is roookie of nonsense in the best way. It really is. July of nineteen ninety three was when we got this delight. The here's your logline when an accident miraculously gives a boy an incredibly powerful pitching arm. He becomes a major league pitcher for the Chicago Cubs You know, just like you do As one does. Yeah, I mean, it's not a broken arm. You're just you should be a pitcher for a major le. Not only is it not broken, it's the best arm that' ever existed. And we would have never known unless you went to the doctor and we diagnososeed those sorts of things here. Totally. I think this movie would say, oh, I No, no, no, you knew what to do. Yes. I think if this is your favorite sports movie believe Any could happen. Truly, there isn'tical thing that couldn't happen on Earth mean you probably went to baseball games and hoped for your moment where you would throw the ball back and they would go whoa the arm on him, Henry Roengartner also It was just one of the better sports movie names that we got.. Henry Roengartner. It was just a perfect Perfect little sports name I first second thought you just knew that They did. You did know that. That is written here. Yeah, but I did know that Because for whatever reason, I feel like this struck, I mean, nineteen ninety three, I was born in eighty seven. so I was six This was like when chanting at Tball games was big and there were a lot of chants I think, that came out of Roie of the Year that lived on amongst the youth And so Rokie of the Ear was huge in our in our little league. I think love kids like to see them be the you want to be the boss. Yeah Th these adult men were taking advice from a twelve year old boy. Like that is absolutely insane. But we as kids want to see kids in charge and the one hundred hundred percent. and he was. He also was a medical marvel And it really left me confused about how medicine and tendons and such worked. I don't think it gave me any good information that helped me in my life in that regard. But it did make me think about if I were twelve and that happened to me how I would handle it and it wouldn't have been like that. I don't think I would have I think I think I would have been scared And I think I would have been so scared that I immediately got the Yips. and we don't talk about what happens. Are you familiar with the Yips It is a it prevails throughout sports, but in sports, the Yips is like all of a sudden, you forget how to do it. And so it's like the worst thing that can happen to you It's worse than a slump. It is like a Well, this happened and in a big moment, messed up and then he never threw the ball right again. It's like hean out. I mean, you can get out of them, but the the like the concept of the Yips is like this place that you never want to go. It's a thing you never want to be struck with because there's no end in sight. It's almost like you ever get the hiccups and you go, is this It's never gonna to end And so that's sort of the yips. And that would have been me. twelve years old pulled into this situation, given all of this power. and I would have gone like And then never would have gotten it right again, then it would have been over for me. I wouldn't have handled it well. I was not a mentally strong twelve year old. Can you get the yips in a great way? like some terrible behavior that you're trying to get rid of and you just kind of get the yips? No No. the Yaps. No. okay. There's no gap to the hip. Only only only bad if only bad man. I don't want the Yips. No you do not No, you do not I feel like I've had them before, but rather than discuss them, let's go to the next movie My name is Lita. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Go Pirates. and my favorite sports movie is Challengers. It's not only my favorite sports movie, it's my favorite movie of all time. It is the movie that made me say movies are for me and since then I have been obsessed with movies. I've been going back and watching like all the classic movies, going to the movie theater as often as I can because challengers really emotionally in a way that I think sports movies are supposed to do. It understands and loves tennis and it is a sports movie that's really for the girls and the gays. It's not really for those male tennis fans that are obsessed with statistics and oh, Patrick wouldn't really serve like that and things like that It is more about the essence of tennis. Hi, KadM Casualties. It's Chris from Chicago My favorite sports movie of the twenty first century is Challengers because The movie is gay and so am I. Love youin it I love you guys and I mean it. These are so good. Challengers came out in April of twenty twenty four. I haven't seen it. Okay. I'm so embarrassed. should say I haven't seen it. Yeah. I'm not in my movie girl era The way that this sparked a movie era for Lita from Pittsburgh I am not in my movieie era right now. Lita's breakdown of this movie was like kind of incredible. I think the filmmakers need to hear what she just said about that captures the essence of tennis without worrying too much about like the stats and stuff of tennis, which is like Honestly It's what made me go, I should have seen this movie. I didn't see this movie. It's like a competitiveness that seeps through into relationships. So it's like a great Mash you know, sexy. that I know. This is a sexy It is super sexy. I think what it says about someone who, if this is your favorite movie, I think you're into situationships, you know, the intensity around you burn hot Yeah, ye. you actually yeah, you are a few degrees higher than other people your body temperature. Yeah J just naturally. Yeah you rest hot because you are just always, you like the peaks and you like the we're fighting, but then we're then we're not fighting and then we're like And then we're and now we're against each other, but we're together and we're Yeah, that's And you haven't seen that. I haven't seen it No, but I think that came through in all of the marketing of the It's funny. I haven't seen it when I first saw that What it a trailer The first time we just se Zendea two guys sitting perched on the edge of that bed. I remember going like, You know, I don't know whether it was a still from the movie, but I actually think the first like teacher they ever did is B bothoth of the hands. Yes. And I just remember going like, this is working. Yeah working. But then I'm a loser because I didn't go see it because I just she's so in charge. Oh, she's so in charge. she should be Tashi or Tashi? How was she saying? Do you remember how she says her name? Good question. I think it's Tash. It's gotta be Ta. There's no's Tashi Hi I'm Zendaya and I played Tashash. I thought it was Zendaya for a while. So no. And she came out, she was like losers. it's just Zendaya. I'm just Znda. I posted a TikTok where I was talking about something and I said Zendaya and they ate me up. Yeah. They were like, A you born today? And here's the thing, I probably bumped into the comments of your video and learned from your mistake and went, Okaykay, Zen Dan, it is But my fiance still calls her Zendeja and I go, Dan, I don't think we need to be That's what that is. No. Where's that even coming from? That takes more effort There's not even a hint of an h in the name. Now' just adding extra. I think he thinks Zendea doesn't feel fancy enough for the fanciness she exudes. I don't know. He wants to put a little extra on it and I let him because she's Amazing. She is. She's everything. I have to see this. It was nominated for Best Picture comedy at the Golden Globes in twenty twenty five. She also Zendha was nominated for bestest actctress at the twenty twenty five Golden Globes And it won Best Original score The Golden Gloes. Was this Tront Resin? It is. Yeah, yeah It's actually a score that is so iconic that like if you were to hear it, it doesn't sound like anything else. it's just oh, that's challengers.. It's like a syynth kind of Yeah. And I think the score was trending for memes Yeah on the. and you hear it and you go like, oh, I I know exactly what this is, but it isn't in a in a way that I don't know, it's just so unique and such a vibe The takeaway from this for me, if this is your favorite sports movie, you are like a vibe curator. You are like into things that are cool, but in a way that is like, I don't know, you're an appreciator of the best things, even if they seemingly aren't your things. The shots in the movie are very gorgeous. I mean, during the sets during the matches, the camera follows them as if it's the ball. And I know that sounds cheesy, like oh, the camera's ball It's really it kind of fliips you upside down and you feel like the characters because you're like, what is going on? they're all like very confused about the situation of what's going on in this intensity and competitiveness and like the way the camera shot, it's great. Yeah. Luk So what am I doing anyway? L I need to see challengers. Put it back in theaters for me. You only would watch it if it's in theaters alone in a theater, please, just for me. Zendeja, if you could Thank you so much. Isabella give us our next one. Hi, this is Carolyn. I'm from North Carolina And my favorite sports movie is money ball. It's not huge on baseball, but I do like Data and math. And I just love an inspirational story Love you mean it. Love you mean it. loveove you mean it, Carolyn. abbsolutely Money Ball. Yes, Money Ball released in twenty eleven. Logline Oakland A is genereneral manager Billy Bean successful attempt to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer generated analysis to acquire new players. Brad Pitt, of course, plays Billy Bean, Jonah Hill as Peter Braant, Chris Pratt is in this, Philip Hymar Hoffman is in this. Robin Wright is in this. Aaron Sorkin wrote it huge. everyverybody loves money. I hear a lot of people talk about money Let's just do this one quickly. If Money Ball is your favorite sports movie With love holding your hand, you're a dork. You're kind of dorky. You're dorky in a sweet way. You love running numbers, you love business. and you love or you love Brad Pitt and movies. But I don't know that when people say it's favorite, I'm of all the sportere's the There's not much sports. I mean, it is because it wouldn't exist without it, but it's like draft day being your favorite football and're like It really about the football. spports movies are where you can have a kid come out of the crowd and pitch. You can have a guy who's got a lasso who's a cowboy put on skates for the first time and get a guy and pull him in and get called for illegal roping. L what do you mean you just found a way to run the numbers and make a cheaper baseball team? Yeah there has to be some competitive element of the sport happening. and it's not really happening in money ball. Right. I needs more money than ball. I need I don't at the same time now, I hate front offices So I don't want to root for them. I want you to spend the money because otherwise, what are you doing with it We give you so much of it for tickets So that's it for that movie. But you find the movie to be necessary? Yeah, I think it was a good movie. Sure.. I think it was I don't think it should be your favorite sports mo. I don't wantan to say. Anyone can be a favorite, whatever. It wouldn't be my favorite sports movie Fair enough. Fair. All right, next This is Glen from St. Louis, Missouri. The greatest sports movie of all time is I think it is kind of a perfect movie embodiment about what te comming to a small town A rust belelt town with its mill about to close and you have these dying members of a hockey team and it just shows you the power in which can just breathe new life into a town. Also it features Paul Newman doing his own hockey stunt. How cool is that? This Andrew from Chicago. My sophomore year of high school I lived in a dorm that was ninety percent hockey players and I was very much not a hockey player. So Sapshot ended up being my sort of like Ret its phone to speak their language and understand the references. Thank you Slackstop Tell ya Slapshot february twenty fifth, nineteen seventy seven, a failing ice hockey team, the Charlestown Chiefs finds success with outrageously violent hockey goonery. Seriously, it is the I think the one of the most and it's good. likeike the more violence that happens the better off they are in this movie. It's like a violent movie that is ny. Yeah. Like you're just like, he hell, yeah. Yeah, get him again. Yeah, Brawl. Braw. Brawl.le. Pit for me. And they do. Paul Newman. I mean, just like, I love when a famous hotie gets rough. You know what I mean? Yeah, Maybe I did mean it that. No, you did mean. Maybe I did mean it that way. famous hotiey and entrepreneur. of a salad dress. I love looking at that face every time I you know ono my 'use I'm eating salad a lot. Yeahah, always. Eating a lot of salad. Your shoulders are gonna come out soon. That's right. I gott to debut these things. Summer is upon us. Yeah, Sapshot, I was raised to be told like when somebody asks you your favorite sports movie, you say slapshot. Really? Yeah. That was like my family was big into it's funny. It's good. It's got good name actors. It also is an American story of like saving a town. It it encourages that culture of hockey, which I grew up, you know, my family were' from Boston, so Bruins fans And we had like the a team that was like known for being bruisers like that. So it was like the Hansen Bothers was everybody was that for Halloween. It was like a a big Slapshots been in my life for a long time. But because of that To me, I go like, I can't say that. That's what I was always told to say. I gotta be my own gal, but I have so much appreciation, deep appreciation for Slapshot. I love that your family told you that is what you have That is your opinion. Just like Katie, the correct answer is fuck the Yankees And Sapshot's the best hockey movie. I can appreciate that they told you that because to me it's kind of goofy. It's a little goofy compared to other sports movies which I lean into. Yeah I like the silly good people. I don't want to people misuse this a lot, but it is May I say borderline camp Yeah, ye. It's like to say that. Theater Yeah hockey. It's like hockey in this likeike overly almost so real ridiculous again Yeah way that I find very don't know Almost camp. Ag, I don't want to be. remember when they had camp as the Mch Gale. Oh goh showed up in like terrible. What was the one where it was like Carly Closs and she was like looking camp at the eye and she's wearing literally like just a drag It's like. like, o. ye. Totally. No. I think it's camp adjacent. I think it's. It's pushing the envelope. It's exaggerated. Yeah. Yeahah. thank you. Thank you for the j. Thank you for me there Let's go to our next one Io from Chicago and my favorite sports movie is Sticket. It is one of the few gymnastics movies and the soundtrack flap. this is Courtney from Oklahoma City. You guys put out a call for favorite sports movies and I have to say mine ick it. That movie is so funny So quotable, a little bit of a tear jerker at times, if I can say that. Great movie all around. and yeah, love you guys. mee next. Okay, stick it April of two thousand six, after a run in with the law, Haileley is forced to return to the world from which she fled years ago, enrolled in an elite gymnastics program run by the legendary Bertt Vickerman Haleey's rebellious attitude slowly gives way Team spirit Bridges was inicket. Awards, it says here Okay, that people just don't have taste. I know. It ahead of the time. It really it really It Soundtrack, which was mentioned. We've got Punjabi MC's Bewere the Boys. We've got Missy Elliot, we run this U Blink one eighty two Anthem partart two breakdown Come baby, come K seven. So yes, a fantastic soundtrack, which must be mentioned, it did matter. I bet it doesn't matter to kids anymore. I bet they don't really care about a movie soundtrack as much. I don't know. Actually that's a really good question. I feel like we're just not kids so we don't think that. But true. If there's a like Barbie had a great movie soundtrack. Yeah. So I think trueact. I just pictured as like I remember buying like youo yeah Yeah O City Blues soundtrack. I remember buying the I had the Prince of Egypt soundtrack I really like Bea that song with yeah rightry It was so good. we got the Divas together. Right Yeah and Houston. Yeah, incredible. All right Stick it You should know this is my favorite sports movie. Good. I love that. So it has so many elements that make for a great Now this is to me camp. Re camp. pure camp. It is the things they say and the way they talk about the sport. Well first we have a main character who hates gymnastics. L she's so good at it, but also hates doing it. love that. And I love it's giving like S the last dance where she like hates that she can dance. you know, she's like, o, can God, there's so much trauma. like don't ask me about dances. likeike girl You know you're a good dancer, like just go out and do it. please. So we have that in the main character, but also I love that she got in trouble. and her punishment is to go to gymnastic school, which is like this premium camp. Like it is it is posh. We have the most elite coaches in the world, all at this like punishment camp Yeah. The premise is so absurd that I'm obsessed with it. It's just so perfect. Can't make sense and so it has to. Yeah. It's like that doesn't make An we're punishing you by making you do the thing you're very, very good at at a very elite level. Like kids you die to go to this camp and have an opportunity to go. And it's like, you know what, you were so bad. You're so bad, we're gonna throw you in that like glam camp of gymnastics. There were I remember there being We had this conversation before we did this because I said, I know I've seen stick it. I don't remember it and I need to see it again. I think I would actually appreciate it more now. but I do remember it had a lot of Lines. There were a lot of like quotable lines that came out of Sticket. Do any stick out to you Um question I feel like they had there wasn't something about like eating mat. Was it like you're gonna eat that hard? Could we do we have time to look at Yes. Let's look Be I remember I feel like maybe maybe I'm just thinking of the trailer. I just feel like I remember there being a lot of like Sass And hilarious. Wasn't there a line that was like, this isn't gymnneice sticks or something Oh my God. Which reminds me of this isn't a chehererocracy Yeah or this isn't aoc. It's cheer tatorship Bring it on O orr was it the parody brring it on This is the thing I'm saying. I' start to remember fake movies as part of the real movie. All this media has done damage to my brain and yet I will not stop. consuming it There was also, you know what there was, Rob when they did the like call me. Yeah. He' like, I'll stalk you. Y, yep. That was like very I also I feel like the So there's a score there's scoring in the movie that is corrupt. like the judges are corrupt and they're scoring, which would never happen in real life. No never. But the way the thing that is very inaccurate is that if there were ever players that were uh, you know, saying that there was incorrect scoring or that there was, you know, I'm looking for is like if there's corruption in the scoring, they would never just be like, okay Like they would shoot that down. Yeah. they would not allow players to have an uprising in this movie they're just like, all right say something. Y. Yeah. I think that's such another that's another part that's so great. Yeah. shout out stick it. Not enough movies about Gymnastics Yeah, what Yes Yeah. Well there were were there were a few stickets, weren't there Maybe there was a sequel. Yeah, I think they it's one of those ones where they kept doing sequels And And then like by the fourth one, it's straight to TV. They the second one was straight straight to video. They went, you know what? we'll just start on VHS. I guess what year was it two thousand U six, so maybe not via probably DVD straight to DVD. Yeah. And then maybe third one was straight to like lifetime or something. There was stick it too. Okay Yeah. Actually, maybe I'm also confusing that there were sequels for another gymnet hold on. Sorry, at gymnastics movie that had sequels Um, there was another one that had there were so many You know, maybe it was stick it. Second chance. No, it was stick it. Stick it. Stick it is. It's gott to be the definitive gymnastics movie that we have It was I got to rewatch You gotta re watchatch. When' the last time you watched this movie when it came out? I think I'm due for a rewatch because I think it's been about probably almost a decade. Yeah I just said it was like my favorite sports movie. No, that's but you said it was your favorite sports movie.es. And all that means is that like you haven't watched your favoriteorts movie in a while. That's right. I haven't watched my favorite warar movie in a while. Maybe I'll go back and watch. My favorite war movie is Stick it. Okay I it's just it's great. Yeah Okay we've got one more. We've got I mean, first of all, I've said it before, but I'm saying it again, thank you guys for all of your calls and your emails. We got so much, got so many amazing calls. We didn't even get to any emails. We have so many there were so many movies. this was so awesome to do, but we have one last movie that we've picked. We will end on this one and then we will get into a little segment that we came up with to end this All right, Isabella, let's hear our last favorite sports movie Hey, Kitty and the casualties Especially Isabella. My name is Kylie. I'm from Mount Vernon, Washington. My favorite sports movie is the Disney Channel Classic, double themed One, what's not to love about a name like that, but Also, I think I've found the perfect way to watch it, which is you drink a little bit too much wine. And then you get more wine. And then when you get to the end with the final basketball scene, like the scene that the movie is somewhat known for You record it with your own commentary and then send it to your millennial basketball playing sister. Maybe a little niche, but definitely a great time. Highly recommend. I love you. and I mean it Okay, so Speaking of direct to DVD, direct to TV. This is from a classic set of movies affectionately known as DComs, Disney Channel, original movies. This premiered in January of two thousand two And the logline is in this fact based film Twins, Heid and Heather Burge take an unusual route to becoming WNBA stars. As teens, the girls enroll in a large high school in hopes of being noticed by college talent scouts. Before long, the school's basketball coach enlists the Burge sisters to play for his team. They begin to shine on the court, but before they succeed, they must learn to accept one another's differences deal with their overbearing dads awwards H. Now What does it say about someone if double teamed is their favorite sportsman I think you're a fan of the Olsen twwins, and this is the closest thing you're going to get to a sports movie with Olsen Twins. That's exactly. I feel like they wrote this for the girls for the Olsen Twins and they were like, no, thanks. And then this is what we ended up with because twins were big at this time. like we wanted to watch twins do So much so that we turned Lindsey Lohan into twins. I thought we had two Lindsey Lohans I did not know there was just the one twice. Right. And they also did not know they were twins looking at each other until they like, you know, like wait a minute You look exactly the same, right? It's not going to click U Yeah, this is this that This actually is going to be remembered by as canon for me, that this was written for the Olsen twwins and they couldn't get them. Yeah, there's so many Olson twins elements. I mean, they are confused for each other and also treated like one person. and then there's so many twin moments where one's confused for the other and they there's just a lot like that single dad. there's just, right Is a single dad. I think so. Obearing they make a path into something kind of famous. It's giving Oltson twwins in every way. Yeah, I agree. But instead it was Poppy Monroe as Heather Burch and Annie Mclwain as Heidi Birge. Wait, they were not actually twin. Yes, I guess Guess not and but I don't have More info that at the You don't know this like in the top of your headat They were twins and here it says that they at least had different last names. Names The final play is what comes up a lot. It has been memed to high heas. I have it beat for beat here, and I'm going read it out for you for what happened. So Heather emerges from the locker room and she drops her crutches. and hobbles to the sideline during a timeout enters the game Down one with seven seconds left Heather holds the ball outside the ark and shuffles her feet for forty four seconds before driving to the lane. Instead of going up with it, She throws a behind the back pass to the corner that nearly goes out of bounds Heidi saves it from going out of bounds and shoots a contested jump shot for the win at the buuzzer. this final play Takes sixty five seconds So no shot clock violation there. No No issues with that. That sounds like a basketball play to me. Yeah.. I guess the big question is when it comes to Disney Channel original movies, is this the best sports one I think we know what the best sports decom is and it has to do with Irish people. It's luck of the Iish It's luck of the Irish. comeome on. it is so elite. A movie that somehow makes less sense than this movie. But it did inspire sinners. Ryan That's right. Yes, Ryan Kugler had it listed as one of his inspirations for sinners. Rightfully, I mean, if it sounds crazy, you just don't know Luck of the Irish like we do. So crazy to have somebody's family in a coin. Was that what it was? They they they put their they took his family hostage that he didn't know he was A le part leprechaun. Yeah. so his Dad hooked up with a leprechaun, which is also crazy And we really never talk about No like she's the size of a thinks of that. Yeah, like why also like what do what are you doing Yeah, like is she okay after that? Now No, I agree. Yep And And they a kid. They make a kid starts to realize he might be a Yeah being Irish is treated as a curse in this movie. Like he gets an Irish accent and gets red hair and they're like, you're cursed. We need to It's like, okay.. Well I didn't know that that was a curse, but apparently it is. Is this is this a Allegory for alcoholism I'll have to watch it again with fresh eyes and see how that holds up. I bet not at all I bet it doesn't hold up at all. Treating being Irish like a curse. feels like what that could be. It doesn' It doesn't hold up well, it's still really, really an entertaining R It's what they call r Rom. And it's kind of a sports moie It is a sports movie because there's basetball invol. I can't deny that. E in a series of games including basketball. Yeah, I'm on Instagram Heartthrob Anderson. I'm on TikTok Heart Thobert, and you can watch me on YouTube as well with my legal name, Rob Anderson. Something about Thobert I reject. Okay, you know, that's fair. That's fair. The way you said it, I reject it too. I must, my spirit must. Okay, so we got a couple in these wonderful voemails that we got about people's favorite sport movies. We got a couple that made us go like Is that a sports movie? whichich I thought would be a fun debate. Let's go ahead and start with Rob from Long Beach, Isabella. Can you play that for us? This is Rob from Long Beach, California. favorite sports movie is Draft day, I think Draft day signed Kevin Costner. Costner acts the hell out of it Sorry, didn't need to swear Also, discussing with friends last night, the myst coneniality is a sports movie Love you and I mean him. Okay, so I didn't set it up well, but basically he landed the plane very funny that on the way he stopped and said that Draft Days' his favorite sports movie, so we technically already made fun of Ro from Long Beach. Miss C genenality came out in two thousand two, Gracy Hart, played by Sandra Bullock, a toom Boyish detective is forced to infiltrate the Miss United States Beauty pageant as a contestant after her department learns that the event is under threat from an anonymous bomber Michael Kaine Candice Bergen, I forgot Cast, Benjamin Bratt of miscongenialality. And I guess what What this Rob was saying is that it is a sports movie. Do you agree? Misconongeniality is a sports movie Ionic, yes, a sports movie, I think that is something someone would say if they don't a favorite sports movie. And it's a sttch a stretch. Yeah. I don't allow it if I like the person I'd go like time But if I don't like the person and they said that, I'd go, that's not a sports movie. It really depends on My opinion of you, if you say this is your favorite sports movie. because I gu I guess it is a competition That's the closest I can get to being a sport. A competition does not make a sport Rightight Right. It could be a game. it could be a You know, anything can be a like if you think of the movie election, there's an election happening with Rese Witherspoon, there's a competition, but that's not sports right That's about an election And I would say that Because what is given out are beauty awards, but also miscongeniality being the name of the Movie, I feel like it's not a sport, it is politics. I think mceniality is a political movie, more than it is a sports movie Yeah I'd agree with that. I think this is I think most people would agree with us that it's not a sports movie. Yeah. And we hate the sports movie you chose, Rob. Sorry to do that to here beach, but that it is decided, not a sports movie. Next, let's go to Jose, Isabella Yo, what up K? this is Cos from LA. favorite sports movie dude much like Isabella. I'm going unconventional I'm going with a knight's tail All right. Anyone that says it's not a sports movie can literally fight me at any time. I will meet you wherever, dude. It's got everything that makes it a top tier sports movie All right, Scott long winded motivational species, an awesome home team that you love to root for. An absolutely diabolical away team that you don't want to root for, dude, Adamar and his squire gave me nightmares as a kid, dude. seventies rock songs set in a medieval setting. What more do you want? All right, They're lancing, there're sword fighting. this is the medieval Olympics our hot tier sports when we slept on No one talks about it. Also, pretty sure my grandma stole it I just k from the video store just never returned it because it was the only English DVD we had in the house muddy foods. need it I'm obsessed with that.
