Andy Burnham says he is going to stick to Labour's twenty twenty four manifesto. And pubs have had their closing time extended until five AM on Monday, so fans can stay out to watch England in the World Cup. Hello, you're listening to Cheat Sheheet, a ten minute podcast on the D's newews Thursday the second of July, and I'm Kamarali Melbourne. And I'm Amanda A Cas. Also today, Taylor Swift and her American football player fiance, Travis Kelsey, have started their rumomoured wedding celebrations in you. And you're very excited about it. I am indeed. can't wait for that Now Andy Burnham, our presumptive next Pime Minister, says he will stick to Labour's twenty twenty four manifesto and the promises made, but believes there is some room the movement on taxes He said there's a case for higher business rates on warehouses and the major developments we see on the outskirts of cities He believes he can use that money to lift high street shops and pubs out of having to pay business rates at all. He previously said he'd want to do a twenty percent cut on business rates during the Makerfield byy election. Now as a reminder, Labour's twenty twenty four election manifesto promised They would not raise income tax, national insurance, or V eightT. It's interesting, isn't it? Because everyone is pouring over this interview that Andy Burnham's given Because we haven't really heard very much from him at all. It's the first direct interview that he's given with journalists. He questions at the newscomers today he? Yeah, absolutely. every word he says is a little bit more detail about what he might actually do when he's as it seems incredibly likely to become Prime Minister in just a few weeks time. And I think did give us a bit more of a sense of what his priorities are going to be. And I think this idea, the big question really is how he's going to manage the public finances. We know the pressure he's going to have to find cuts in order to fund the defefence investment plan and perhaps find more money for defence going forward. Now he's previously said that he would be prepared cut welfare to fund defense spending. But I think listening to him talking about welfare there in particular, it's very clear that he's not just going slash the budget. He was very clear he doesn't want to see vulnerable people lose out on the allowances that they're currently entitled to. And instead, he's got a kind of much more holistic long term vision of how to save money in that area, which he says is about ensuring that sixteen year olds have a pathway. they're not just sort of off the end of the conveyor belt. and instead, you're given kind of a good technical education, you can have an apprenticeship, you've got a route into work. And they're in more countal houses. so people don't feel that they're sort of cut off from opportunities and end up not in employment education or training more mental health support as well, which all of that obviously sounds fantastic in an ideal world, but clearly it's not going to save a lot of money and certainly not for quite a long time. So I think there are real questions around that. Yeah. And the things he didn't say, he didn't tell us who his chancellor' going to be, although it seems as if Ed Milliband is still the front runner, which is going to be an interesting choice because as you say, that has slightly spook some people in the city of Ed Milliband, Red Ed as, to be called becomes the next Chancellor. And he also got a little closer, I guess to sort of where the taxes come in the wiggle room that he suggests there could be maybe around capital gains tax as well and maybe looking at council I mean, I don't know how popular those changes would be, but it gives them the space to do something at least Two teenage boys have had their sentences for the rape of two girls increased after they were found to be unduly lenient. They were initially given non custodial sentences, three year youth rehabilitation orders by a judge at Southampton Crown Court in May, who said at the time he didn't want to unnecessarily criminalize them because they're children. Now there was a public outcry, the attorney generenal asked for a review and now they have been sentenced to four years in detention by the Court of Appeal after the case was sent Lady Chief Justice Baroness Skar said the court had no other choice but to change the sentences and that the judge in Southampton had wrongly assessed the level of harm caused to the two girls who were raped. Ahead of the review, one of the victims shared a statement saying What happened to me has left me harmed so severely, I do not think I will ever be the same. The boys aged fourteen at the time, the offensces carried out the attacks in Fording Bridge in Hampshire, in november twenty twenty four and January but the court ruled the sentence of a third teenager involved in the attacks will remain the same. All three teenagers also saw their restraining order which prevented them from contacting either victim extended from an original ten years to indefinite. Now getting your steps in has been links to betteret health for quite a long time. So the NHS has started trying gamify it early next year, NHS England will launch what they're calling a marathon a month asking people to walk around thirty minutes a day. thoseose who do it will hit roughly twenty six miles a month. That is of course the distance of a marathon twenty six point five. Now the NHS say that those who complete the challenge will then be eligible for rewards which couldn't include incentives and discounts, not exactly clear where the discounts will be. And this has all been sort of Thought up by the former Olympic medalist Sir Brendon Foster, who founded, of course, the Great North Run. The aim is to sign up more than one hundred thousand people this so they can have their daily stats recorded Digitally And I had a quick look at my steps at the moment. I'm averag about six thousand a day, which is not too bad. But Am man, of course you've been hobbling around on those crutches. What your step What's your step count like at the moment? Wow It's currently around fifteen hundred That is a big improvement to when I was literally holed up in bed doing about one hundred steps a day when I wasn't allowed to put any weight on it at all. And I was trolled by my phone, which kept sending me messages saying, yourour average number of steps has dramatically reduced since this time last year. And I was like, please, I've broken my leg, but no This does sound like, I mean, for me personally, perhaps it's a bit traumatic but I think for you know, this is a good idea. Everyone loves the targets, don't they? And you know how many people get, you know inspired by the ten thousand steps a day, I mean it sounds a bit more achievable, I think, doesnt it? It does, it does. and I'm looking forward to hearing what the incentives and discounts will be Now for the news you've all been waiting for expected pubs in England and Wes would now be allowed to stay open until five AM on Monday, so we can also open watch England play Mexico and then be tired for work the next day. The government had initially said they would not relax the laws further, but the U turned on it because that's what they like to do. and Kistama said it was good news for both supporters and pubs The local government secretary Steve Reid says that the pubs can now stay open and previous relaxing of licensing measures had un covered the eventuality of England playing so late in the night, of course of playing the Azteca in Mexico City. So one AM kick offff and I'm already tired thinking about it and thinking about that next day at work and I feel sry for kids as well who are gonna have to stay up late and go to school tight I wonder if they' were going to have tummy bugs come Monday morning Bad headache. Yeah. Yeah. No Bridget Phillipson said they do have to go to school. happ they do Education seecretary would say that would wouldn't she? of course. I mean, yeah,'s tricky, isn't it? It's just so late. And especially, you know, if it goes to extra penalties, I mean, it could be It's gonna be an all nighter. Brutal. And if they lose I mean, with no sleep and they lose. obviously I'm you know, not countencing that idea. If they win, it will be amazing, but then no one can go to sleep because everybody' so excited. If they win, the kids will go bouncing into school very tired they very happy. if they lose They will not want to go to school. If they go to school they'll be really miserable. I remember when England lost to Germany in eo ninety six and going to school the next day after that and just being told by the teacher to sort my face out. We were all so grumpy the next day and refusing to be work Well, that was an early lesson in supporting England, wasn't ite? But no, no, we're going to stay positive And come on that's going to be I mean, if they win, it'll be the best Monday work ever. so Finally, Tiler Swift and her American football player fiance, Travis Kelsey seem to have kicked off what is likely to be the wedding of the year, perhaps century at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It's been compared to the American Royal wedding. I don't think that's an exaggeration. Now, what's fascinating is that the venue isn't confirmed. But busy. But preparations for a huge private event have been going on there for days, All the streets have been closed. Bearing in mind, this is right in the heart of New York High profile friends of the couple, people like the actress Lena Dunham, her long serving producer, Jack Antonoff have been spotted arriving there wearing their wedding gear in blacked out SUVs. Altogether up to a thousand guests are expected to turn up. But there is a bit of surprise that Taylor Swift, who is the queen of romance of the love story of fairy Tale visions and choosing to get married in a kind of twenty two thousand seat sports arena best known for hosting basketball, ice hockey, and so. She's actually played gig there before seems a bit a surprise. I mean, I thought maybe it was all a diversion and she was actually going to have some kind of beautiful ceremony on the beach in Rhode Island or something like that. but it does look like There have been deliveries of lobster, there are all these sort of signs up there talking about garden parties. So I mean she's certainly got the cash. Maybe she's going gonna kind of create some kind of incredible display. I mean, I don't know, some incredible setup inside to kind of transport all, I guess somewhere else. att least she'll have complete control over who can see what, who's allowed in
