Andy Burnham has won the Maker Field by election, paving the way for him to challenge the Gist arrmour for the leadership of the Labour Party The US has ended its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has said it'll start charging a fee for the use of the bikele roadway. Hello, you're listening to Cheat Sheheet, a ten minute podcast on the D's News on Friday the nineteenth of June. I'm Leia Boletto And I'm Amanda Acas. Also today, a man's been charged with attempted murder after a three year old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure in Cambridgesire Addy Burnham is now an MP. He's won the Maker field by election Comfortably, Amanda, by twenty four thousand Nine hundred and twenty seven votes to reforms Robert Kenyon on fifteen thousand six hundred and ninety six votes in a seat that was specifically vacated to get Andy Burnham into the commons. This is a huge moment for the Labour Party, a huge moment of course for Andy Burnham too. At the time of recording this podcast, the Prime Minister Sake Stama hasn't yet spoken or congratulated Andy Burnham on his victory, that no doubt will come. But he won this seat, didn't he after the results came in, and he said that tonight could just be the turning point saying his election is the moment. When labor will bring back hope future Reading in between the lines on that in particular, he's essentially saying, isn't he that he is the change that the country potentially needs. Yes. and it was a huge gamble forcing the by election in Makerfield, but it's a gamble that's played off in absolutely spectacular style for Andy Burnham and it's really quite an extraordinary win which shows kind of the scale of his personersal popularity, if you like, with this share of the vote nearly fifty five percent. know we' been talking beforehand, could reform, pip him to the post, but in the end they got thirty four point five percent and restore, they only got six point eight percent. so we even combine those further right parties didn't really stand much chance of defeating him. And it's really interesting because it looks like people who would normally support the other parties, the Tories and Mems the Greens completely decided they were going to go one way or the other. But I'm sure that Andy Burnham now is arguing with that speech, talking about the importance of change, talking about the importance of a turning point, bringing back hope to politics, ending the division we've seen. D don't want to go down the dark divided route that we've seen America in America, he said. Promising change. Of course that's what people want to hear, but who did we last hear? promising change? That was S Kir Starmer when he won his resounding majority back in twenty twenty four. Now clearly Starmer's popularity has nose dived. He's had a lot of. problems, defence spending, the economy, of course, Mandelson, welfare reform. I mean, there's a whole list of that. Andy Berham really feeling that you know this could be his moment, but there's not necessarily a clear simple path to him taking over in Downing Street even though now it is looking increasingly inevitable, It say? Also to mention two by elections in Scotland. Absolutely. Now this is also really interesting. So there was by election in Aberdeen South, which is won by the Tories. Now this is their first Scottish by election win since nineteen sixty seven and they effectively were pinning all of this on the situation the North Sea oil and gas industry It is an issue that Kemmy Bad's really talked a lot about in PMQs and so on. And and their candidate their Douglas Lumston, he won almost fifty percent of the vote. so that was quite a stonking win for the Tories in Scotland, where they haven't been doing very well historically. And then the other constituency, our Brth and Brghty Ferry that was an SMP hold there Perhaps less surprising, but what's interesting as well is that labour came in fourth in both of those. So it really shows if we needed another reminder of the kind of collapse that labour have had in Scotland, which would be a big issue, for Andy Burnham if he does become Prime Minister. Now latest developments in Iran now, this is after the US and Iran signed a deal to end the war We discussed the fourteen points in the document on cheheat sheet yesterday, but since then it's worth updating those listening. The U.S has dropped its naval blockade of Iran after the two countries signed a deal to end the war in the Middle East, we've spoken so much about this. U. S. Central command confirmed the end of the blockade on in accordance with the president's direction and said some U. S. vessels would remain in the general area. And Iran has announced plans to introduce a system of fees in the Strait of Hamus in two months time after that sixty day period of negotiation that's been triggered by signing of the memorandum of understanding. But so many loose ends still play out, Amanda, including JD Vance and where he actually is over the coming days. Yeah, this is rather extraordinary. So the White House overnight confirmed that JD Vance wasn't actually setting off yet for the start of these technical talks because it turns out that the Iranian team had said that they weren't going to come yet because they're concerned about ongoing Israeli military action Lebanon. So that really does call into question exactly what's happening today. We're meant to be seeing the start of these talks, this signing ceremony, yet another signing ceremony. But all of that looks rather uncertain now. And I think it just highlights the kind of fragility of this situation. They've only got sixty days to kind of resolve all of these outstanding issues about you know, nuclear issues, ballistic missiles and so on. And then also this question of charging in the strait of Hormuz which in itself is pretty extraordinary considering they didn't used to be charging before Donald Trump launched this war. So if anything, it's kind of the clearest sign of what the U S have lost by taking this military action with not really that many Although we've heard J. Vance again over the past twenty four hours hitting out at critics of the deal, saying it's been misrepresented. It's not right that the US is going to have to spend three hundred billion and that's been misinterpreted and also hitting out at Israel and basically saying you need to remember, stop complaining about this deal and what we're telling you to do in Lebanon because you need to remember we're your biggest military backer giving Israel a four billion dollars a year So very volatile still, despite the fact that we're meant to be under this memorandum of understanding. Is' three year old boy is in a critical condition after ending up In a crocodile enclosure, this is the zoo at Johnson's old Hearst in Huntingdon in Cambridge here, a thirty year old man has been arrested, this is on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the case Aand. Absolutely terrifying, isn't it? I mean, it's not just every parent's worth nightmare, but I think anyone's worth nightmare, the idea of being ending up in an enclosure with crocodiles like this I think another rather extraordinary part of the story is being reported by a number of different outlets that the wife of the owner of this Soo which is called Old Heurst it's in Huntington, a sort of family Runzoo. The wife of the owner actually jumped into the enclosure herself to try and save this boy and to get him out there out of there. It's also being reported that the man, the thirty year old man who's been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder wasn't actually known to the boy or the family. And we know the little boy is in a critical but stable condition in hospital, but absolutely terrifying case. Yeah, the s you saying our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family during this difficult time. And Scotland they won, didn't they their first World Cup match after thirty six years. That was on Sunday after beating Haiti. one Nil was in the Boston stadium absolutely loving the Tartan Army and their support. Well they face Morocco up next, kick off is eleven PM In our household, there's been a lot of negotiating with the kids about whether and how long they can stay up. And did you see that Instagram of Bridget Phillipson talking about how actually parents were going to leave it up to you whether you allow kids to stay up later? This is off the back of the mayor of New York, getting kids into his office to say that they could watch the Nick final and stay up later, which I thought was you know, a good bit of fun. around politics that we don't have very often And just a quick side, because there's been a lot of noise about Emma Hayes. It's properly taken over the conversation around ITVs coverage. Two things are happening at once here online. Everyone's agreeing that she's been the best pundit completely in this tournament. She's genuinely sharp, but also a separate row has broken out about ITV essentially sticking her in front of what looked like kitchen set with a school chalk booard And so people have been talking about whether this is the right set. And there's been conversations about misogyny around it. I mad, isn't it? I mean, I quite liked her chalkboard. I thought she was so clear and so direct she kind of explained her point really well from there and I hadn't thought that looked like a kitchen at all. So in a way, I mean to me it seems quite sexist that someone would see that and think it looks like she's in a kitchen, but then clearly other people are saying they think the setup wasn't entirely appropriate. but really silly memes online like an ironing board next to her, piles of washing. So I think the conversation in itself
