Sky News, The full story first Kistar Rerandy Bernon met yesterday for the first time since the Prime Minister announced his resignation. The biggest maternity review in the history of the NHS will be published today. Hello, you're listen to chehe Sheheet a ten minute podcast on the today's news. It's Wednesday, the twenty fourth of June. I'm Wilfred Frost. I'm Safhy Ridge. Also today another hot, hot day. Schools close, people are encouraged to work from home if they can because there are some serious health risks here We kick off with the latest news coming out of Downing Street, with of course the likelihood that Andy Berham will take over from Kiramma. The question has been on what date? September or mid July and we have this exclusive interview that Beth has done with Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister possible leadership candidate Dar Jones. A number of MP's have been asking you to run in any leadership race. Are you going to stand I'm not. And Sophie clearly he has been one of the names people wondered Could he challenge Andy Burnham and thereby? trigger a leadership race delay the handover of power till September him not standing means more than ever, we're looking like a coronation and a handover by july seventeenth, eighteenth. Yeah, that's exactly right. So we know where Streetet is not going to stand. We thought he might. We know Darren Jones is not going to stand. Now he is saying he will not stand The only person left is Al Cnes, I think, really m and then you gota get over the threshold of MPs, it's bec more and more likely that this is going to be an uncontested leadership race and that means that Andy Burnham is going to be PM in what three and a half weeks, veryer, very quick The other thing that I think is really interesting tonighte about the Darren Jones interview is that he told Beth that One of the reasons he's decided not to stand, even though he says around one of four Labour MPs nott exactly have worries about Andy Bernon, but think that there is an uncontested coronation, It's not a great look One of the reasons he's decided not to stand is because he says he's talked to Andy Byne about his economic policy. and that he's been reassured. becausecause some of the briefing was, if Darren Jones had concerns about whether or not Andy Bernam will stick to the fiscal rules, or if he'll be economically credible, for example even if he'll have her Miliband as Chancellor then he would be more tempted to run. He says he's got reassurances on that. Who knows, but I think that could be significant A couple of other things from it. He also said he certainly did have enough MPs if he wanted to stand. S Sure mate He also said we didn't discuss jobs at all. know, I wasn't offered a job to not stand Sure But most notably was when Beth asked him if he was angry that the Prime Mister, who he is a very close ally of he is chief secretary to the Prime Minister had been ousted and he said, yes, he was personally angry. And then I have to say almost unbelievably, he said, but ultimately responsibility stands with the person at the top job. Bly me. I mean people move on. and That is just a bit rich. It's slightly different if you're a Cabinet member You know, you didn't have to go as far as John Healley resigned, but you know, a cabinet member who's clashed with the chance in the Prime Minister saying, I didn't get enough money for my department. You are the chief secretary to the Prime Minister You carry the can. with the man above you in any grand sense of this. if the premership has not been successful, you have to acknowledge you've played your role in that. We also understand that Kistama spoke to Andy Burnham yesterday because I mean, I'll be honest, I would have assumed that they'd spoken before that, right? But they have not. And I think that just shows You know, the frostiness of the relationship, you know, we're hearing that you know, Kissoma's wife, Victoria is furious with Andy Burnham. there is a sense that he's been working against him for a long time Probably true, to be completely honest. But they are believed to have met away from Downing Street for the first time since Kist Halmer resigned on Monday. One thing would be very interesting whether or not they discussed is the Defence investment planl, because it feels like that is really shaping up to be a key kind of battle line between them Just to say, you know, the dates on this, the NATO summit is on the seventh of July. It goes ahead with the Pime Minister And the new defense seecretary, Dan Jarvis, to state the obvice, the previous one, John Healley resigned just a couple of weeks ago I think this is I'd go as far as to say a disgrace on such an important issue that we have waited so long to get the details on that the prior Defense sect' resignation so fresh in the rear view mirror PM and the new defefense secretary go ahead on something that is just seminal. to the nation for the next decade If The man that is almost certainly to be the next prime Minister has a clearly different view on it and if he's said that view to the Prime Mister look I'm going to boost defense planning more than you are. Please don't cement this yet If the PM, if Kiss armor proceeds, I think that would be A disgrace if that's where we are, given that a big reason he's lost his job is because John Healy resigned So an operation is underway to evacuate eleven thousand people from the Strait of Homers. That is the International Maritime Organization who've anenounced that. And it's come as the head of Iran's negotiating team said that the Strait of Homers will never return to its pre war conditions and will be administered by Iran. Parliament spepeaker saying everyone should know that the administration of the Strait of Hommers will never go back to the way it was before the war. And I guess that's everyone's worst fear, right? The sad reality, I think for the brave citizens of Iran is that For a lot of the West, it's Maybe not their worst fear. It's the sort of least bad short term option of try and get this thing reopened regardless of what it means for some people locally, it's sort of short term economic easing of pressure for maybe long term damage. The The largest maternity review in the history of the NHS will be published today. It's been carried out by Donna Ocndon over the course of three years Sophie, what are you you looking out for on this I think there's two things to say. firstirstly, is that The statistics of maternity care, we talked about this a lot, but every single time it just takes my breath away, more and more women and babies are dying in birth, right in childbirth, which I find unbelievable. It's gone up by twenty percent in about a decade, which is staggering, genuinely staggering. We've done a lot of work on this m the person who I constantly turned to as someone who, I think understands the severity of this problem and has really dedicated her kind of life to trying to make things better is Don Rockingdon. She's a senior midwife, but that just doesn't really kind of do her justice, the kind of campaigning while she's She's played here. So two thousand five hundred families included in the review of maternity care at Nottingham University Hospital's NHS Trust, they've looked at how hundreds of babies died or were injured. and she's expected to set out how people were ignored, how they were gaslit. There's accusations of racism, misogyny, you the use of offensive language and We should say as well that there's a financial cost to taxpayers of this, huge financial cost. So the trust, just Nottingham trust have already paid out millions of pounds in compensation and fines, including the largest ever given by an NHS trust for maternity failings, one point six million. over the death of three babies in twenty twenty one and Youve just got to hate something's going to change. Now I'm sure everyone felt it yesterday, unbelievably hot Records are going to stumble in the next couple of days for the hottest June ever So yesterday we hit just shy of thirty four degrees Celsius. nineteen seventy six, the June. record was thirty five point six and in the next couple of days, it's expected for that to be brok, broken quite easily, something we might even possibly hit forty could be the highest ever, not just June highigh We shall see, but likely to hit a June all time high And look, this is really serious now as well. You know, we delt on those you know high twenties in April and May and how people can potentially enjoy that, but there's a red weather warning, which is rare and there is a public health risk to the scale of the seat. Yeah. we're seeing the impact of thousands of people affected by school closures, for example, hundredundreds of schools shut in Somerset, hundreds schools closed in Buckinghamshire lotots in Oxfordshire, lots in Gloucestershire. it's I mean understandably the buildings are just not kided out for it. There are some tips as well we have for people. One of them Put your pajamas in the freezer. I love that I could try that one later. I'll try that one. Finally, we should touch on the football England couldn't find a way past Ghana. I watched the first half and then went to bed and then just followed the rest of my phame, which was a ridiculous thing to do, to be totally honest But What I would say is Gana were really organized, you know, they were really, really organized and credit to them. I thought they played very well And You know Gonna to put my pitive spin on this Better have your wobble early in the tournament.
