Iran and US to sign peace deal | Social media ban for UK teens | UFC at the White House — Jun 15, 2026 — starts at 0:00
Sky News, The full story first the US. agree a sixty day peace deal with a stroke of Hombers set to reopen. Sist arm is poised to ban social media for under sixteenens in a speech this morning as part of sweeping social media reforms Hello you're listening to T cheach a ten minute podcast on today's newews on Monday, the fifteh of June, I'm Sophie Richch. And I'm Wilfer Frosts. also today cage fighting takes place on the grounds of the White House to celebrate President Trump's eightieth birthday. Is this the moment? Finally Pakistan's Prime Mister has announced that a deal has been agreed between the U. S. and Iran. So both sides have declared what they're describing as the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all acccording to Pakistan's Prime Minister. what are the dets well Well, I think The big detail is that it should lead to the Strait of Hormuz being reopened and as a return, Iran being able to sell their own oil immediately. So no no sanctions imposed on that. That obviously is the great immediate positive coming alongside no more fighting to state the obvious exactly what happens on both unfreezing of financial assets and other sanctions being listed and in return to Iran's nuclear capabilities and past nuclear enriched material remains to be seen. And clearly that is the elephant in the room over the next sixty days. That still has to be negotiated. Look in the short term, oil prices obviously have reacted well to this. We're down about four percent or five percent to the mid eighties The high just for context was one hundred and eighteen The low before the war started was sort of sixty seventy. So so that's all good news So far The strait itself hasn't reopened, and the IEA, the International Energy Agency suggests that will take a couple of months, almost all of these sixty days to where we were prices to obviously price in that good news in advance. So just on the sixty days, they're saying it's a permanent ceasefire because they're trying to negotiate a more expansive agreement during that sixty day period. because' on all sorts of things to try and work through as you'd expect, but Donald Trump is in optimistic mood. He wrote on his truth social platform, Ships of the world, start your engines. let the oil flow I guess the other question as well is Lebanon too. and what Israel and Benjamin thatty are who decideed to do there whichich we got a reminder of yesday. You know, clearly, it was all teed up be signed yesterday President's birthday, no less and And early yesterday US time, there was a bit of an exchange of fire Israel towards Lebanon again Um Sing. You know, There's risks attached to this, of course. Sakirist Amour is expected to ban under sixteenens from major social media platforms. We expect this to include TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. He will announce this this morning live. We've come to expect this in the last few weeks stillill a hugely significant moment when we get there. and it's also a very interesting context how we've got here so far. Yeah, I think that's right. I actually think this goes further than we expected, to be totally honest. I think it's further than we expected And I think some of the articles that had been written were saying Oh he's going to about harmful social media or he' you know I think there was perhaps an expectation that he wouldn't go quite as far as this because what he's done is effectively Australia plus, what we expect He's going to ban all of the social media platforms that Australia did, Fund sixteen's, as you say, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, et cetera and then also introduces restrictions on So this could be if you're in playing Minecraft, for example, you're not going to be able to use a chat function, which would open you up to conversations with different people, strangers, potentially around the world and also AI when it comes to AI as well, romantic or sexual chatbots will be limited too. and this comes after kind of several legal cases involving AI chatbots, AI agents as well. So I think that It's fair to say that this, you know, this is a beefy piece of action if it comes as we expect. It's always bit difficult doing the cheat sheet podcast recordings hours before the PM was expected to do a speech right The other point, of course, is the timing whether we're being cheeky to suggest or not very much is timed to throw something of a win to your MPs just before potentially you need their support. Yeah, and also like I think any prrime minister who feels they're on a shaky ground that their prime ministership that their premership might be coming to an end. starts to look at legacy issues as well, right? And that's what Kissom is doing here. This is a classic legacy issue. We saw Rishy Sunak as well, to be honest with the smmoking ban I think often you get these Legacy issues comees to the fore just as someone thinks. Would you think it's a legacy issue because he knows he's going or it's a strategic issue to try and keep him Both to be honest. I don't think you have to choose between those two things. Well what's matter as if it ticks both boxes, why haven't you done it already? I mean, I think that's exactly. And the other thing is with the Pimenter as well is that I think it is fair to say that some MPs will be thinking we've had to drag him to this position. qu. I mean and fair play as well, you'd have to say to the consonservatives more than anyone else for pushing this issue from the very start. So the assisted dying bill is going to be brought back arliament in the coming days. If you remember, of course, this was initially introduced by the Labour andpean Led Bater as a private members' bill and it ran out of time in the House of Lords. Some people would argue that this is legitimate scrutiny and debates that people having who had concerns about the bill Others would say, to be honest, this is the House of Laords just blocking Parliament, the will and frustrating the passing of this bill. But it's coming back because the Labor and people law in Edwards have said she is going to be reintroducing the legislation on Wednesday she was drawn second ballot for the private members bills. Will it face the same potential problems of being held up delayed, essentially blocked as the last bill because it's a private members bill and not a government bill. I think that's right. It's another private members' bill. It's not a government bill, which means that the government is not whipping it they're not. like formally using their elbows to get the legislation through as they would with other things. in theory occurred I think that Firstly, by introducing it a second time, it does give more time, and I think that it would be quite difficult, frankly for the Lords to block it again in the same way And that's not to say that they won't try because look this is literally a matter of life and death, right and people who feel strongly against a sister dying I think it's fair to say we wouldd use any methods they can to try and frustrate it becoming law But I think that look, this is quite a big moment and it definitely makes it more likely This legislation will pass eventually. It is Monday morning Firstly Congrats Scotland Seriously early Sunday morning, two AM kickoff time This is exciting for Scotland because you know, they're in the group of death to be honest. I looked at that group. I was like, oh my goodness Scotland have been unlucky, but they've got the win and that's my sweepstake team. Yeah Wh did you get? I had South Africa who also lost, so you know, the world' against its will. Well And then they got the draw with Brazil and Morocco, right? So so they're top of the group. Well, they're top of the group. there we go. And so congrats to them. And then overnight we've seen Sweden just beach Tunisia five one Late yesterday, Netherlands to Japan to Germany thrashed Cura seven one who did score and pull back. ag go to one one when they went one nil down and they went absolutely mental. Yeah, I love it. Kud I just love the wholeorld Cup, I have to say. And I I've re co beating Ecuador one nil. Yeah. So the hours are a real bore though aren't they? Yeah, I've stayed up for a few of them, I have to say. probablyably not very satisfful with the early starts, but I have stayed up with a few of them and also I've been watching the highlights in the morning over breakfast. It is just like just reading out all those scores from yesterday is just like This is so great Another big sporting event overnight UFC. with all the bells and whistles attached as well, motorbikes taking off If you don't know what your se is, is it what ultimate fighting championship And the name it does what it says on the tim, basically. It's taken over. I mean, it's a huge huge support now bigger than boxing potentially. President Trps eightihir yesterday and this has gotten a lot of crriticism because all of this was hosted on the White House lawn They built a big arena and people saying A, it's sort of uncouth for the White House and B, you know We don't do this, dictatorships do this sort of thing. I totally get those angles from Americans who look at this and say we've never done this before. and the White House isn't used for that sort of thing I think it's really interesting to see the pushback from a lot of Brits on social media because I just pauseed to say Well, we do host things like concerts right in front of Buckingham Palace and do so to celebrate the monarchs or this or that. For the mononarch, but not the Pime Minister, which again is that kind of splitting of things which we've discussed before discussed before one of the key reasons for the mononarchy. I look forward to seein King Charles hasting the next UFC competition. Yeah Well, that's I mean If we do it with like, you know tea parties and street parties and slightly different vibes. and you know Andrew Lloyd Weber and Gary Barlow and other great British musicans coming together to write songs that have come from across the Commonwealth. So yeah, it's very different So That's it for today's cheat sheet If you've got thoughts on the storory of the day, get in touch, E can address the cheat sheet atsky. u.
