Social media giants have criticized Sekir Starma's decision to ban social media for under sixteenens, so what's in the plans Donald Trump is at the G seven, where Ukraine is expected to dominate the agenda Hello, you're listen to che Sheheet, a ten minute podcast in todayayss news. It's Tuesday, the sixteenth of June. I'm Wilford Frost. I'm Sophia Rridge, also today we have got to talk about Kate Verde's amazing historic Nord draw with European Champions Spain in the World Cup. Incredible So yesterday, Kistara unveiled his plans to ban social media for under sixteenens. I think he went further than Most people were expecting, frankly, with a pretty much blanket band following on the Australian model, and also actually adding to it by saying that if you're a gaming platform, for example, you can't have a side chat if you're under sixteen with a stranger on the internet. So a really, really big meaty policy announcement and there's been a lot of reaction already. Lots of reaction. It's sort of what you might expect. some summing up the kind of social media companies pushback, Meta said quote, The ban risks isolating teens from online communities and information, and driving them to unregulated alternatives that lack built in protections and parental controls. And the second part of that statement, I think, is, particularly the gist that you've had from the likes of the Molly Rose Foundation, even the NSPCC that, you know kids find a different way to connect in a similar way that they are doing at the moment, could it get even worse different platforms Yeah, so And like I say, W, I don't think any of this is perhaps unexpected. You'd expect to get this pushback from the social media companies and there have been some campaign groups like the Molly Rose Foundation who've been very, very forceful and emotive, I think, in explaining their concerns around the ban. But I think it's also worth mentioning the number of people who welcome this re. And I do think it is an example of parent power, to be honest. You know We talk a lot about politics being disconnected from people about the sense that decisions are made a long, long way away from people. And this is a great example, I would say of Quite normal people setting up WhatsApp groups for smartphone free childhood writing to their MPs. And this grand swirell of opinion, kind of mum's net bade, if you like has enforced a policy shift. I really believe that I don't think Histam will be doing this without that I'd also just add to your point about parent power. justust to go back to the meta statement as it indicated, the first point they make It might isolate teens from online communities and information. I think parents care. In fact, I think parents say We'll create more human to human sources of information and communities. And that's kind of at the heart of this. And it's that point where it might isolate a fifteen year old who's very embedded in those communities and sources of information at the moment But you know No change works for everyone overnight. and I think to you've made this point many, many times. for the seven year olds and eight year olds, hopefully their communities are in person Yeah as they grow up. Exactly Really interesting and we're going to be talking an awful lot more about it I'm sure in the weeks ahead. Right, let's talk a little bit, shall we about the G seven Donald Trump arriving at the G seven in Evian. give it its full name written down here for us. C, how's your French with? Not very good. Emon Lin Hot savoir In France. there you go So G seven, lots of countries arriving, of course. Donald Trump saying that he's very happy about signing the deal with Iran as he arrived yesterday. and of course, that new agreement on Iran will be discussed, although Ukraine is expected to takeertain stage. Yeah, and I think ing all this, isn't it so interesting? obviously to state the office with the G seven happening, but coming off the back of his They almost just to sort of Gloss over now pros and cons of what he may or may not have agreed with Iran. And I think, you know, a lot of people understandably pointing to the fact that you know three months on, this is a step backwards. if it really is going to get signed come Friday But I think you know, a lot of the other G seven members, certainly the Europeans, will probably just take in the short term a reopening of the strait if it comes as a victory and focus on Ukraine as a legitimate next step You know, and I think central to that is a bit of a hope that there's a possibility of diplomacy now between Russia and Ukraine in part because Russia slightly on the back foot. So they're being forced into this position. Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Mertt saying that for the first time a window can open for diplomacy. when it comes to potentially ending the Ukraine war. So look Let's see, obviously the elephant in the room is What is Trump's agenda on this having not been particularly supportive of Ukraine thus far This is one of those stories where You feel like you've got to look away because it's so awful. but it is an important story to cover this morning. so It's about thirteen month old baby boy Preston and Davy and he had a pretty rough start in life, right? Because his dad was her criminal, not around His m was a convictor murderer, right? So the worst possible start that this little boy could have in his life he thought you would have thought that he'd been thrown a lifeline. by being adopted A teacher, A less. Jamie Varley, a thirty seven year old teacher. and his partner, a man called John McGowan for Carly, who was thirty two. So Jamie has been found guilty of sexually abusing and murdering that little boy John has been found guilty of sexual assault, child cruelty and allow the death of a child It is Unspeakable. It isakable I just can't really comprehend how un believably awful. as you said you know, you don't want to speak about this story, but we must because Unforivably, there are examples and the little ads grandmother has pointed to this where it could have been intercepted. Yeah. that's it because the baby D all several times right, you know, so there were points when something could have been done. And I think it has raised questions about Uh obbviously, safeguarding around children who are adopted Baby's grandmother, the maternal grandmother, has said that everyone should be sacked who is involved in this case She also said This is according to the Daily Mail, Social services might have been hesitant to act when they saw Preston they may have been accused of being homophobic and look this maybe a debate that is sparked because of this How often do we wildly celebrate a Neil Nil draw I know I was jumping around the room. I mean, this is so epic. Cape Verde drawing Nil Nil with the European Champions Spain and their goal keeper who's known simply as Vosinia And is forty years old was the hero of the day, making a string of stunning saves, particularly in the first half. I had it in the background You just service see a great he's put up a stand for the first twenty minutes of the. G, greatreat job. And they freaking held out. And I can't believe it. I was thinking, oh just get to halftime. That'll really, you know kind of spook the Spain f, just get to halfft time. And then the whole I mean incredible, absolutely incredible scenes So for context, Cape Verdy has a population of about five hundred thousand people. Spain has a population of around fifty million people, Obviously one of the greatest ever football or nations. I mean, it's just unbelievable. lookook what we said FIFA expanded the tournament too much and I kind of thought they did, to be honest. but you know
