Sky News, The full story first Ethquakes have hit Venezuela with high casualty numbers reported The UK June heat record was broken twice yesterday as the heat wave continues today. Hello, you're listening to C cheatheet, a ten minute podcast on the today's newews on Thursday, the twenty fifth of June. I'm Anna Jo. And I'm Wilf Frost also today, Wimbledon tennis stars are reducing their media time in protest against pay And Scotland suffered defeat Brazil and the World Cup Now developing story to bring you as we kick things off and a state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela after two earthquakes hit the capital city Caracas. Authorities haven't yet provided a figure for the number of deaths or injuries, All reports are suggesting it's going to be sadly Very, very high. two earthquakes was seven point one on the Richter scale and the second was seven point five. It's worth noting, of course, that An over over seven is Very powerful veryy rare, usually only ten or so ten to twenty per year globally. and this clearly happening close to a major, major city in Caracas Yeah, and the interterior Minister has talked about this quake being felt in several states, not just in the capital Caracas. And it's too early, as you say, to assess the full scale of the damage, but the pictures coming out of Venezuela are pretty shocking. You can see collapsed buildings, blocked roads, power lines down. People sitting out on the street, some of them hugging their pets, looking back at their houses where the exterior wall has fallen down, you can see their kind of furniture inside. It's grim stuff and awful for the people there. And I think what's added to the pain for them is the fact that in some areas, they've lost mobile phone signals as well, so really difficult for families to contact each other and check in on each other Apparently this is not particularly common occurrence in Venezuela. the country sits on multiple fault lines, but apparently its positions straddling the South American and Caribbean plates make earthquakes much less common than some other parts of South America. We have heard from Donald Trump, who of course, launched military action in Venezuela back in January where we saw President Maduro being taken by U. S. forces. Donald Trump as an investment in that country. He has said this morning that the US will be there for our new and great friends. and he said the US stands ready, willing and able to help. And he's also instructed all agencies of the US government to get ready to move quickly. Now then'm here, have you got used to this heat yet, Wolf? No. No I'm struggling, I have to say. It is too hot. I don't think there's any Any doubt about that? I think we are allowed to say that aren't we always feel guilty moaning about nice weather, but it really is very hot. I've got a two fan situation going on at home wherever I sit. It's a fifty year record. broken twice yesterday. Tuesday was very hot, but we didn't quite cross The nineteen seventy six record for June But we did cross it yesterday, taking us above thirty six degrees Celsius a number of times, as we mentioned We haven't cross to the all time high which was july twenty twenty two. Yeah, but there is this red weather warning. They're rare these warnings. it's still in play set to end at midnight. But that June heat record could be broken once again today. And amidst those warnings, hundreds of schools are likely to remain closed today. People are being encouraged to work from home when possible safety precautions because it's not just the kind of difficulties with transport in this heat, it's also about keeping people healthy as well, isn't it? and not encouraging people to go out into this And it's not just the UK that's suffering. Other countries are struggling in Europe as well. In Paris, temperatures reached forty degrees yesterday. and there's a town in the southwest of France called Piso, I think that's how you pronounce it. Their temperature peaked at forty four point three degrees, making it the hottest day in France since records began eighty years ago And it is seriously dangerous. At least forty eight people have died since the start of the heat wave in France from drowning whilst two young children have died from overheating in cars as well So we look like we're getting closer to Andy Burnham being correonated as Prime Minister rather than facing a contest And we are getting more details or certainly more speculation about what his premiership could look like. The Financial Times is claiming that mer Manester Mayor, of course, will set up a number ten of the North, moving part of his prrime mininisterial offers to Manchester in a bid to shift power out of Westminster. And of course this will tie in very closely with his pitch to increase devolution and make sure that more power moves away from Westminster But a lot of speculation still around who his Chancellor might be The Times is saying that Ed Milliband has been developing economic policies for Andy Burnham over the past few weeks, but he's not a she in by all accounts. Other people are in the running as well, including Shabada Mahmouud, we're streeting also possible candidates as well. But I'd be really interested to know what you think about how the bond markets might react? I mean, there didn't seem to be much change in the bond markets when we heard that Andy Burnham had won Makerfield and looked like he might be the PM. What about Chancellor? No bond markets are very calm at the moment for sure. and you know part of that has been also good news in Iran, oil prices falling, but yeah, no negative reaction to the now base case expectation that he'll be the next PM. I think there would be movement in and around who is chosen as Chancellor, but there really would be movement if and when the new Chancellor decides or doesn't decide to say, oh, we're going to spend a lot more and fund it by borrowing. you know, obbviously what the market would care about is that any spending You know, spending itself is not a problem if it's funded via taxation. So I think that'll be interesting to see You know, the added thing that is also being reported are two people who likely to get roles behind the scenes Um Laord O'Neill, Jim O'Nill, former Goldman Sachaxs banker. former treasury minister in the coalition government of David Cameron and and Nick Cleig and Andy Halde, the former bank of England Chief of Ccomce, both of them, you know been quite regular guests on on Sky News. And I think that's quite an interesting snapshot that this isn't to people who are very left wing or very pro I'll just make lots of promises and we'll find the funding down the line. So No, I think those types of indications suggest whoever it is There's a sensibility and an understanding of what needs to be done to keep the markets calm. We shall see, as you say, it does look overwhelming likely it will be Burnham crowned seventeenth of July not a contest leading to a delay till September Do you see President Trump was quizzed about Andy Burnham? I did. I did. quQuizzed by our own marks today. Indeed And how did he describe? E extxtremely liberal, saying that he and Burnham are probably of a different persuasion o dismissive Tone, cllassic Trump he called him. the mayor of a town u, which All mayors and the people of Manchester will probably be a little bit insulted by It's not wrong, of course, that they're of a different political persuasion Um, And we shall see how that relationship goes going forward. I kind of back burnam to woo him. I think they're This debate that, you know people saying Burnham's quite a kind of good lad that he likes to be thought of as a good lad. I think he can appeal to Trump in that regard We shall see If he's prrime mininister I mean. I think he's probably to beime Mis. I think he's probably going to be Prime Minister too. A train driver killed in a crash in Bedfordshire passed a red signal moments before the collision. This is what we've just heard from investigators. The driver, Sean Burton, died in this crash, one hundred sixty two people were injured when one London bound service crashed into another also bound for London on Friday, if you remember. So the Rail accident Investigation Branch has said in an interim report that Burton's train proceeded past a regged signal near the scene of the crash in Elstone near Bedford at five fifteen on Friday and the investigation We'll now look into what information the driver received and whether there were faults with the warning systems. And in the meantime, British Transport Police has confirmed that fifty three people are still in hospital and eight are in a critical condition. So some of the world's top tennis players are planning to protest over the scale of prize money at this year's Wimbledon the protests will come by limiting how much media they do in terms of post match commitments just a fifteen fifteen minutes Wreak down some of the numbers on this for us, Anna, because You know, I think one's immediate reaction is o are evil bosses not being nice enough to the players But their pay is going up The pay is going up and Wimbledon organizers have said that they're surprised and disappointed because they're pointing out that the overall prize money has increased by twenty percent this year. I think the overall prize money amounts to about sixty four million pounds They are getting a pay rise and I love looking at the figures and the singles champions will take home three point six million pounds. First round losers are paid about eighty thousand pounds But the overall fund is still seven million short of what the players had wanted. And I noticice that the world number on'es Ana, Sabelenka and Janik Sinna have said that they're disappointed. They say it's not about them, it's about the players who are lower in the ranking who they say are suffering I mean, eightighty grand for losing in the first round is not bad. so 's gone up twenty percent which is a big increase, obviously That said, if you really go into the weeds on this It's now fourteen point four percent of revenues that goes to the players and a decade or so ago was a bit closer to fifteen. So if you look at it on that level, is a percentage of the total it's declined a bit, even though In absolute terms, it's jumped twenty percent year over year. We should mention as well Scotland We should Yeah Match for them last night. So they lost three nal to Brazil in Miami clelearly still a wonderful, wonderful experience and the Scotland fans have been The winners of the tournament so far. U endearing themselves in every city they've gone to They've got three points. Oviously, eight third place teams do go through.
