Psalm forty three Give judgment for me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people . Deliver me from the deceitful and the wick ed . For you are the God of my refuge. Why have you cast me from you ? And why go I so heavily while the enemy oppress es me . O send out your light and your truth that they may lead me, and bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling , that I may go to the altar of God, to the God of my joy and gladness . And on the ly re I will give thanks to you, O God my God . Why are you so full of heaviness, O my soul? And why are you so disquieted within me ? O put your trust in God , for I will yet give him thanks , who is the help of my countenance and my God . Let us pray . Come create a spirit, light and truth, bring us to the altar of life and renew our joy and gladness in Jesus Christ our Lord . Amen . The first reading is from the book of Numbers, beginning at chapter 32, verse 1. Now the Reubenites and the Gadites owned a very great number of cattle. When they saw that the land of Jezah and the land of Gilead was a good place for cattle, the Gadites and the Reubenites came and spoke to Moses, to Eliazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation , saying , Ateroth, Divon, Jazer, Nimra, Heshbon, Eli aleh, Sibam, Nebo, and Baon, the land that the Lord subdued before the congregation of Israel is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle. They continued: If we have found favour in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan . But Moses said to the Gadites and to the Reubenites, Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here ? Why will you discourage the hearts of the Israelites from going over into the land that the Lord has given them ? Your fathers did this when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. When they went up to the Wadi Eshkol and saw the land, they discouraged the hearts of the Israelites from going into the land that the Lord had given them. The Lord's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, Surely none of the people who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upwards, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not unreservedly followed me. None, except Caleb, son of Jephane, the Kennesite, and Joshua, son of none, for they have unreservedly followed the Lord. And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord had disappear ed. And now you, a brood of sinners, have risen in place of your fathers to increase the Lord's fierce anger against Israel. If you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people . Then they came up to him and said , We will build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our little ones, but we will take up arms as a vanguard before the Israelites until we have brought them to their place . Meanwhile, our little ones will stay in the fortified towns because of the inhabitants of the land . We will not return to our homes until all the Israelites have obtained their inheritance . Because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan, to the east . So Moses said to them, If you do this, if you take up arms to go before the Lord for the war, and all those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before the Lord, until he has driven out his enemies from before him and the land is subdued before the Lord. Then after that you may return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the Lord. But if you do not do this, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out . Then the Gadites and the Reubenites said to Moses Your servants will do as my Lord commands. Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock shall remain there in the towns of Gilead . But your servants will cross over, everyone armed for war to do battle for the Lord. Just as my Lord orders . We still I do sight from my clean stuff. I knew I will be sweet is we 'll remove your call The spirit of God feels all The second reading is from the Gospel according to Luke, beginning at chapter nine verse one . Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. He said to them, Take nothing for your journey, no staff, no bag, no bread, nor money, not even an extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them. They departed and went through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere . Now Herod the ruler heard about all that had taken place, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen. Herod said, John, I beheaded , but who is this about whom I hear such things? And he tried to see him . On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and whispered privately to a city called Bethida . When the crowds found out about it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God and healed those who needed to be cured . The day was drawing to a close, and the twelfth came to him and said, Send a crowd away so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside to lodge and get provisions, for we are here in a deserted place . But he said to them, You give them something to eat. They said we have no more than five loaves and two fish , unless we are to go and buy food for all these people . For there were about five thousand men . And he said to his disciples, make them sit down in groups of about fifty each. They did so, and made them all sit down . And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd, and all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces . Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people , and kindle in us the fire of your love. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God and fellow heirs with Christ. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people . Renew the face of your creation, Lord, pouring on us the gifts of your Spirit , and kind le in us the fire of your love . For the creation waits with eager longing for the glorious liberty of the children of God . Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people , and kindle in us the fire of your love . Christ has gone up on high, and has led captivity captive . Allelujah ! Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel , who has come to his people and set them free . He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David , through his holy prophets God promised of old, to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us , to show mercy to our ancestors , and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies , free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life . And you child shall be called the prophet of the Most High , for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way , to give his people knowledge of salvation , by the forgiveness of all their sins. shadow of death , and to guide our feet into the way of peace . Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever . Amen . Christ has gone up on high and has led captivity captive . Hallelujah . We pray for God to fill us with His Spirit . Lord, come to bless us . Fill us with your Spirit . Generous God, we thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit. Fill us with your Spirit . O God, the King of Glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven. We beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever . Amen . Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray . A s ide har d de hold your sheep For giving us as we for May the Spirit kindle in us the fire of God's love. Amen . Let us bless the Lord. Alleluia. Alleluia . Thanks be to God. Alleluia .
