Confronting Mac at the Vault Center

Hi guys, JBM here wanted to tell you about another fiction podcast I have a particular affinity for and that I think fans of Derelict will too. In the event its occupant is incapacitated, a dive suit will engage automated travel and seek out the nearest active demis for recovery Me , in other words Yes, Dr. Graf. This suit was automatically drawn to you as the only other demis active outside fathom base . It is programmed to do anything necessary to re ach another dive suit including this dresset. No , I'm okay . Oh, okay . Mac, who is inside this demis ? I still cannot detect the operator, Dr. Graf. My access to diagnostic and metric inform ation is severely limited well, let's find out assuming I can get this suit back up Are you able to realign your suit's posture, Dr. Graf? Yeah, yeah, I'm on my feet again. Your demis has been through a great deal, Dr. Graf. I suggest running system diagnostics before moving further . Warning . Well, that's not horrible. It doesn't sound like these things are tough, huh? Environment making nice equipment suits are based on Mostorian combat platforms designed for heavy military applications, Dr. Graph. They are very solidly constructed . Approaching the other Demis the The helmet visor has a lot of gunk on it. I'm gonna wipe it when I'm trying . Maybe I can see Oh man Mac . doctor Graf . It's Emerson. Brenda Emerson, doctor Graf? Yes . She's been missing for twelve hours. Why is she in a suit? Why is she want to? Hypothesis doctor Graf. The last interaction I had with Ms. Emerson was in my mainframe capsule. She was running diagnostics on my systems, but could not find any explanation as to my erratic behavior. Is there any benefit to analyzing your mainframe from outside? Several. As Fasm's primary VI engineer, she could access the direct access ports on the capsule's exterior. This would allow her a high throwboat connection with very low latency to my mem in Riccourt, but I have no re collection of interacting with Miss Emerson outside my bank frame in this way . Can you tell if she's alive? It is possible. If you plug your Supatic cable into Miss Emerson's Proyv pxort, Dr. Graph. The cable will estimate from your left arm. The requisite port will be on the same arm of the opposite demos . Okay, okay, hold, hold on . Mac. I think I got it, Mac . Miss Emerson is alive, Dr. Graff, but her biometrics are weak. Examining the demis' biologues, I see her condition has been deteriorating for several hours My estimation is that Miss Emerson will expire if she does not receive medical attention soon. I can only see her face. But that looks normal. There's no blood, no sign of injuries, but she's def justinitely unconscious. Does the event log say anything about what happened? I'm sorry, Dr. Graff. I cannot access this steamus' event log. What about diagnostics? Can you read that? Credible systems only, Dr. Graff. The suit battery is at forty one percent capacity and the suit's atmosphere is at thirty four percent capacity or one thousand six hundred and twenty nine DSI We have to have to get her out of here . What is your current location, Dr. Graft? Um , I'm I'm inside what's left of the control capsule Mac. The floor's what fell on top of me. The ceiling split open, the whole thing's fl ooded. Obviously, the walls are still intact. The interior of the fathom platforms were designed to accommodate the size and weight of a deep environment recognized equipment to start a graph in case of flooding. How does that help me? You can navigate the interior walkways to the tram capsule, Dr. Graf. Passenger tram, that can't still be running. No, Dr. Graf, but if you can reach the cargo tram, you can use kit to travel to the northern platform. I detect that that platform has less suffered the same amount of dam age as the Western platform. Many castles are still pressurized. There will likely be survivors present. An Emerson suited will just what follow along after me ? Correct, doctor Gra ph. The misses in recovery mode automate their functions to follow a nearby dive suit to safety . Whoa whoa, whoa, whoa, what's it doing? The wrist and hand appendages of a demis can rotate in a torso movement much like the head of a drill. It will crank the door open and remain still until it does. I think I could just release the handle . Correct, doctor Graf. The pressure door will remain open unless you reverse the procedure in the same manner. Okay , Macam everything alright, doctor Graf ? There's some doctor Graf body smack . Just a dozen maybe more floating here here . They must have they were all trying to make it to the tram . They didn't make it. I knew all of these people, Mac half of them were my team . Half of those I didn't even know their names . They were more like computers to me, really . Some of them I don't think I ever even spoke to You must feel very distraught right now, Dr. Graf. That's just it, M . I have my lights on. I'm making myself look at each of their faces and I'm trying to find it, but it's not there What, doctor Griff? Anything ? I don't feel distraught or scared . I don't even really feel sad . Shouldn't I shouldn't I be horrified? Shouldn't I be crying, Mac? The loss of Commander Freeman has exerted a trauma similar to one you have already experienced Dr. Graf. You're right . I couldn't save him . It's just like a good . Commander Freeman's sacrifice resulted in the saving of many lives, doctor Graf . Does that not inform the decision? Is that not a rationalization necessary evil ? Mac . If something is necessary, Dr. Graff, it cannot be evil. You had no choice in your actions in regards to Commander Freeman , as such , morality does not factor into the equation . Taking Emerson to North Taking myself too and it means resc ue. It means going back to the surface and I know that's what I'm supposed to do . I know I'm supposed to go home and get my life together and fix what's broken I think that won't be the end of me . I think that's something I can't survive . I've observed in humans that different people recover from trauma in different ways , sometimes outside of established norms . If I were to be honest, doctor Graf , I believe leaping fathom would be a tremendous error in judgment. But there's no way , Mac . Agent Bully was right. All MD cares about is results . And I haven't had enough . If that is the case, Dr. Graf, then the solution seems obvious, produce more results . How would I do that, Mack The plan you discussed with Commander Freeman to journey to the relay and contro usless loc to broadcast the solution signal that you decipher . Are you suggesting instead of going to the northern platform instead of being evacuated , I go to the relay Are you suggesting that I open the vault ? Yes, Dr. Graf . That is exactly what I 'm proposing to. But the reactor is gone. There's no way to power the relay. The primary reactor is gone, Dr. Graf, but the relay could be restored to operation by reaching the southern platform. No, the southern platform is Mothball. It's the original platform. It's just storage now . It has the original platform. It is self contained. It has its own reactor smaller than the one lost here, but certainly enough to power the relay . You articulated it yourself . The Mostorian Corporation rewards ambition . It rewards it above everything . Would opening the vault not be considered a tremendous success? Dartagraph ? It would it not be enough to guarantee your reinstatement as project lead . Yes , yes, I believe I would . By my calculations, traveling in a straight line from the East Platform, you have just enough atmosphere and power to reach the south byform . In a straight line that on the surface that would mean Yes, Dr. Grav . It would mean crossing the vault , but you would only have to cross its edge. You would not need to journey into the center where the radiation is most extreme . I believe your chances of survival are high, but you will need one more asset. What ? You will need Miss Emerson, Dr. Graf. Emerson . Two Dems can share atmosphere and power between them in a process called tethering. You will need the atmosphere and power for Ms. Emerson's suit to survive the trek. You do not have enough of your own. When overweight, there's no medical care on the southern platform doctors, it's empty. There is a medical bay on the platform doctor graph. You could activate the automated systems to treat missimer until further help can arrive . I predict her chances of survival are near fifty percent in that case . No , no . Mac that wouldn't be right . So it is because it is what is expected of you . Just like going home, Dr. Graf . You believe it is what you are supposed to do. That's not if I may be so bold, Dr. Graf , does ambition not require that one do more than what is simply expected of them ? Does it not require risks , initiative ? Is it possible you have become used to doing only what you were supposed to do by your intellectual inferiors , by Mustorian , by your wife . If you truly wish to remain here . I'm surprised at the effort it takes to move this thing though . The Demus requires you to actuate it, Dr. Graf. It will drain your energy just as normal walking mind, which is why I recommend slowing your pace so that you can not overexert yourself. I'm fine, Mecca, I just started one out of the suit . I just want this over with. I can't see anything. My lights do nothing with the reactor down. It's pitch black now . What's our status ? The atmosphere you are sharing with Miss Emerson is now at forty six percent capacity , Dr. Graph. Down thirteen percent since the last check energy levels are at fifty two percent capacity. And how's Emerson ? Miss Emerson's life signs continue to deteriorate. She is still unresponsive . Do you have any idea what caused her condition ? And how she got hurt? I mean I have been studying the chemist's diagnostics and the condition of its circuitry indicates it experienced an electrical overload lasting some tens of seconds. Shoes electrocuted . Inside the suit? I believe so, Dirty Braff . Oh, that explains the lack of physical trauma. Yes, doctor Graff, more than likely, the majority of our injuries are internal. Mac I'm here, aren't I Yes, Dr. Graf, you have reached the precipice of the vault . I can see it somehow . Everything in front of me is darker . Is it not magnificent, doctor Graf? Perfect. I felt that way once, but now I can't stop thinking about Joe . I can't stop feeling the handle in my hands. I can't Oh God, scared Mack Negoti it's too much that Joe is less drived . I'm scared that it broke me one time when I was young , I got lost in the woods at night and winter . I was maybe twelve . I'd been out with my brother and we lost each other . I yelled for him over and over , but he never responded . I never called back . And so I set out alone . And I started at this rock formation in the middle of the trees, and I remember it because of the rock. It looked like the back of an angel . Their wings tucked in . I wandered off from there and the trees are so tall . You couldn't even see the stars . I'm not sure which way I went . It's the first hour or so I was hopeful I would find someone or someone would find me where no one did and I was deeper into the woods. I was terrified . Admitting it was like It was like admitting you had let all the weight fall off. I could just sit there sit there and let the wolves come . How did you escape off? Four strangers of my dad found me , crawled against the angel . I was hours later . Did you know it's strange though, Mick? What is that? Dr. Braff . The walls never came Once I gave in, once I stopped being scared, I knew I never heard them again. They were just gone . Is that how you feel now, Dr. Graft as if I've given it No But I think I want to What is it? Doncraft? Lights just came on in that distance across the valdor It must be the North Platform . It's powered now I can detect that someone has activated the platform's emergency generators, Dr. Graf. It is a positive sign The Survivors . People made it . Like people alive . Yes, Dr. Graf, but you are running out of atmosphere and energy. And Miss Emerson's condition continues to deteriorate. You must reach the Southern platform as quickly as possible. There won't be any lights on the southern pl atform now. How do I find it in this? I have placed the waypoint in your hut ograph. Move towards it. Once you reach it, I will place further way points to continue guiding you in the radiation of the vault ? Even on the edge , I'm going to hit it, right? Yes, Dr. Graf, there will be radiation , but it is at its most intense in the vault's center where it has been measured as much as eleven thousand receivers . As long as you receive anti radiation medication at the southern platform, you should suffer no long lasting health effects. And there are anti rad hypothes . My storage logs for the Southern platform indicate there are thirty doses contained in its medical bay, third graph I'm so tired, Mac . It's so dark . One more obstacle, doctor Graf . One more effort . Then everything will be as it should I trust you, Mick . I wouldn't have gotten this far without you I know that. I appreciate the sentiment, doctor Graf. It's a unique alloy, Dark Graph, not of this Earth. A great deal could be learned from just studying the chronography of the metal itself . Why does this suit have an audible rad counter . Yes, doctor Graf. Under Analytic Utilities in your heads up display, left center. What kind of rats are we looking at? Currently, doctor Graff and your demis is experiencing radiation levels in the eight hundred to one attacks in the police siver's range. How much protection can I expect from this suit? Your demis will shield you from as much as forty eight percent of the most intense radiation dark graph . That's not awful . It is possible those on the other platforms are attempting to contact other survivors through close circum ication direct . The radiation of the vault will hinder signal reception I want to know Mac . Maybe I shouldn't be doing this . Maybe I'm being really selfish . Maybe this is wrong . Doesn't feel wrong, doctor Kraft? No . It doesn't feel like anything . Yeah, I'm a good rambling, uh my head is starting to hurt back . You are further onto the surface of the fault door, Cartograph. The radiation has increased. Give me the radar out. The radiation levels are now at one thousand one hundred Milly Secrets Already . Oh Jesus . Particraft the radiation is having other effects as well. What , battery levels are draining at an increased rate. You now have less power capacity than atmosphere capacity . At this rate, you will run out of shared power between your Demus and Miss Imersons in approximately fourteen minutes . Fourteen minutes. I can't reach the southern platform in fourteen minutes. No, Dr. Graff. I'm afraid you cannot. By my calculations, predicting your maximum walking speed under duress, you will need an additional twenty four minutes of power capacity. If we could make it, you said with Emerson we would have another air in power. I had no way of anticipating the radiation's effect on the battery systems on a demonstr at. Very few suit operators have locked hsour on top of the vault. It is simply too dangerous . This is doctor Graf does anyone copy on this channel . This is Dr. Eva Graf. I have read Everson. We are on the vault and we are headed for the south platform. Does anyone copy? Dan . You are draining power levels with this communication attempted D tor. Graf. Okay , okay the problem is we need to conserve more power but we're going to die out here . This dotagraph and in what mode does Ademus consume the least power ? Technically, Dr. Graf, the answer is storage mode for transport and long term storage, but Ademis is shut down in their form . All right, right, right, okay. Just bear with me What if we altered the bios of Emerson's suit so that when it entered storage mode, it still maintained its life support . That way it would only truly use power to keep her alive, nothing else. An intriguing idea, Dr. Graf, with the right bios modifications, it is possible, but M iss Emerson's demis would no longer be able to walk back. I could push it. When my suit's strong, the metal of the balt is smooth, I could push it, right? It is possible, Startigraph. But what would that bias power wise? It would add an additional thirty two minutes to your consumption rate. Right, that's enough to make it to the platform . The extra exertion, however, will cause you to expand atmosphere faster. That's okay. I can make it back . There is one additional problem, doctor Graf . What? Deep environment recognized equipment suits were never designed for a human occupant in storage mode. Its legs and arms fold on the exterior of the chassis into a roughly square shape . I see so if Bryn has her arms and legs in those parts of the suit . They will be broken Dark . Well, she could she could curl up in the center of the suit, hug her knees to her chest . Miss Emerson would be cramped in the central fuselage in that formation, but she would fit. But how do we get her to do that? I mean, she's unconscious. We can't just open up her demis out here. No, doctor Graf, that would flood and depressurize the interior We have to wake her up somehow just for a minute. Wake her up and get her into position. How do you propose to do that, Dr. Graf? I think electrocution, you probably you'd probably be knocked out due to loss of blood pressure. Does that sound about right? For the most part, Dr. Graf, hypoxia would have resulted due to the ridiculous activating system in Mrs' brain stem being dep rived of oxygen . Right, right. So if we oxygenate her, what if we increase the oxygen percentage in her atmosphere mix? It is theoretically possible that would awake her, Dr. Grafie. Can you adjust the oxygen mix in her dem is while I log into the bios. And I'm connected from the tether, right? Yes, Dr. Graff. You should be able to access and ultra receivers bios from your hud. I can progressively increase the oxygen content of her at mospher micix. Be advised, however, that this will expand atmosphere at a quicker pace for both you and Miss Emerson . Yeah, I understand. Just do it, Mac Increasing oxygen content by five percent to Miss Emerson's atmosphere m . All right, let me see . Emergency functions. There you are . There is no response from Miss Emerson, doctor Graf. Should I increase her oxygen content another five percent? Yes . Uh , I found it . I think I can do this, Mac I can remember my C plus plus and Python , it's been a while . I can't believe we still use these languages even for BIOS I think we're good, Mac. I removed the code that shuts off the power on storage mode and also the code that disables life support. That is good news, Dr. Graff. I am increasing oxygen content an additional five percent in Miss Emerson Steamus. If this does not work, we may need to consider Emerson ? Ryn . It's working, Mac. She's coming to, I can see through the visor Brynn, you're okay . I have you. You're okay . Now Max's okay too. He's functioning, he's helping. Don't talk, Brynn . We're heading towards the south platform. We're going to get out of here . And I need you to do something for me. Max . Max's fine. He's here with us. And listen to me, Brynn. I need you to pull your feet and hands out of the actuators and I need you to pull your knees into your chest so that you're completely inside the body of the demis. Can you do that? Evil . Matt, give her more oxygen . I do not think that is a good idea, Dr. Graf. The oxygen. I understand. It looks dangerous, but we are running out of time. If we can't get her semi loosid at least, then we're both dead anyway, so do it. As you wish, Dr. Graf, increase the oxyg en content another five percent Emerson , can you hear me? Yes . Yes. We're on the vaultrin vault . Yes, we're in trouble . Eva have to tell you , stop it. We don't have time for this. I need you to pull your legs up and hug them to your chest with your arms. I lost contact with both you and Miss Emerson. Dr. Graff. I'm sorry, Mac , I accidentally muted the calms. Can you hear me now? Yes, Dr. Graf. I have returned Miss Emerson's oxygen levels to normal. She should remain unconscious for the rest of the journey . The modifications you have made to Miss Anderson's Temus have resulted in an additional thirty eight minutes of power reserves, doctor Graf. Well done . Dr. Grass .
