Lewis Hamilton back winning after four se Grand Prix My goodness me, what a treat We have Alice Powell Abby Pulling and Andrew Benson. I mean I'm blown away. It was great It's emotional, isn't it? And from Lewis as well, he was emotional. I think every driver on the grid came up to him and congratulated him We've seen a different Lewis Hamilton this year, almost like a Lewis Hamilton of old and yeah, he fully deserved the victory this afternoon. As Alice said, emotional, I mean, I've grown up watching Lewis Hamilton in the sil of arrows of Mercedes dominating and doing incredible things, Living Legend, if you want to call him that. Yeah, to see him now in his new era with Ferrari having success, I couldn't be happier for him. I still remember the day that we broke the story that Hamilton was going to Ferrari like it was yesterday. that was a huge, huge deal And this is a huge deal as well. You know the most famous Form One driver that there is probably has ever been with the most onic team. whenever he won the first Grand Prix it was going to be it was going to have a massive impact and I'm sure this one is going to be the same People will say, o but he won China Just to make a difference, that was a sprint race and winning his first Grand Prix for Ferrari, that's a big difference. That's a huge difference. Of course, Sprint Race to Grand Prix. they want to win the Sprint race but winning a Grand Prix and you're first for Ferrari. No, he moved to Ferrari with high hopes and last season It was It was tough watching Lewis Hamilton. He was emotional, he was frustrated then this year in this new era of Formul O, you know he's rejuvenated and he's been knocking on the door of this win and he's finally got it and he dominated really a particularly the last sort third of that Grand Prix, you know, he streaked away from George Russell. and I think this will be one that he will always, always remember Well, Alice, he didn't start in pole position. He did start on the front row. that gave him an added bonus. but just talk us through how that race unfolded because you were calling it. Yes. I mean, George Russell started from pole position. He needed that pole position after the couple of Grandndpries he's had and Kimmy Antonlli running away. we could lots of people say with the championship. But When he initially got away, I was sort of thinking, Hamilton's got the better getaway here. But then that second phase of the start on that long drag into to turn one, it was George that had the better start. Lewis was under pressure from Kimmy Antinelli. actually squeezed him a little bit onto the grass going into turn one And then Hamilton gathered it back up through two and we thought, okay, here we go. You might have a go at George Russell into turn three, but thought better of it, settled back and almost was almost lacking in pace a little bit from George Russell. Hamilton started on the soft tyre. Russell Kimmy Antonlli started on the medium tyre. Hamilton boxed first and we thought, you know Mercedes have it all under control, but Hamilton was just bitiding his time, looking after his tyres. brilliant job Now Andrew, there was a safety car, virtual safety car period. Did that mean that actually it was easier for Hamilton? It was definitely easier, Jenny, but I mean there's a real possibility that he would have won anyway. He was on a different strategy than the Mercedes drivers. He was on a three stop. the Russell and Antonell were on a two stop And of course, that meant they were out of phase for a while But I've just been looking back through the numbers. He was sixteen seconds or so in front when the VSC came out, the critical VSC that allowed him to pit and retain the lead. He probably would have lost he was due to stay out for a little bit longer, a few more laps. He probably would have lost some time Not so much. So I reckon he probably would have come out about ten seconds behind but with ten lap fresher tires He would have had two Mercedes to get by, which is not easy in Barcelona But with the pace that he showed in that final stint with the freshher tyres, of course, and they weren't as much fresher because he stopped earlier than he planned. I think there's a really good chance he would have won the race anyway. We'll never know, of course. and of course it was lucky. but as Alice says, you have to say it was a win on merit No coincidence is it an irony that you look at who caused that virtual safety car, It was Fernando Alonso, Ferrari link so much. and that led the way for Hamilton to be able to box Do do it nice and safely and come out in control as that the race. Yeah. I mean, of course Ferando, I think was one of the last winds around the Spanish, Grand Prix o now it's the Barcelona, Grand Prix. thirteen years ago, I do believe. So yeah, it all come a bit full circle for him. Of course, not what the Spaniard wanted, but I'm sure he shared that kind of camaraderie across the grid that everyone did for Lewis Hamilton to get that win. It was a special feeling I think everyone was feeling and it's nice to see that history made Absolutely. Well, let's hear from Lewis Hamilton. Lewis, Grand Prix winner with Ferrari ell us how good that feels. Right It's really, really hard to tryed to be really present at the moment and really live in the moment. It's hard to believe that we just did that whole long race And we came out on top it was just wow. Wow, wow I was just I've been hoping and praying for this moment and working towards it really hard with the team and's just such great dedication for everybody I can't believe the re Well, I can't believe Ill get my first go freewin here in Boston or it's It's such a privileged position to be in and something I really never forget. You said that there, so much hard work has gone into this. We heard the Italian Bono cheering you on on the radio as well. Did it really feel like every element came together today? Yeah, yeah. I mean, of course we were fortunate with the VSC But I think we were quick enough, I think you could see at the pace of the end. I think we were quick enough to battle for position and I think unfortunately VSE ultimately robbed us over a proper battle, but Yeah, I think safety at the VSC and then the pit stop coming out ahead and after that just just ln looking back. The car felt great and the last two stints were really really strong. I was closing the gap to those guys before when they stopped and a phenomenal job from the team. Thank you to everyone back Maro. Well done Louis.. Well and very emotional, Lewis Hamilton. He was wiping his eyes with a towel as the national anthems were playing out. Maybe Kim gave it to him, who knows. But I think it's right that he is emotional. It's been a while since he stood up on that podium. He talked about his dreams, talked about racing in Red. It's very significant for him for Ferrari for Italy. It is and I think as you said, not just for Louewis Hamilton, but for Ferrari, they have been under the spotlight. they've had huge amounts of criticism from F critics, from their fans. It's not been great viewing for Ferrari fans for the past several seasons, really. And they've had Charlac Cler The knocking on the door of winds, not quite getting it over the line where their last victory was actually Mexico twenty twenty four, which was Carlos Sines. So That's a long time, nearly two full seasons So for Lewis Hamilton to take a victory at them where they've got the record for the most wins anyway and most podiums. So it was successful circuit for Ferrari I think it's going to kickstart their season, hopefully. more retirement Gremlins which we'm sure we'll touch on with Mercedes as well. Okay Ferrari too with Charlotte Clear having a problem. but I think safe to say and I'm going to say it. that we're going to chuck Lewis Hamilton in there for the battle at the driver's Championship Aby. Yeah forty one points. Now Lewis is off the lead of the championship. Okaykay, I think You know, Mercedes have been the driving force of this season so far, but we're only a third of the way in. There's upgrades still to of course for Ari brought quite a lot this weekend and it seems to be working. I mean Lewis is race pace, okay, they got the strategy right for one, but his race pace was incredible. So everything's going in the right direction for them. and I think this championship as it progresses, it's going to get narrower and narrower at the top, which is exciting as Kimmy has been running away from everyone with it. but Yeah, who knows what's to come And Andrew just finally on Ferrari weekend where they got the strategy right. They had a little bit of luck, but the strategy work well done and they also got the reliability of this upgrade package working both at the factory and on track. and that's been a key problem for them. So a real result for the team. Yes, actually you know they've had two upgrade packages now, one in Miami, one in Spain and ass obviously this one's worked really well because it's really vaulted them up to Mercedes. Just take a chill pill a little bit. It's not it's not the most power sensitive circuit Barcelona. and we know that Mercedes has an engine advantage over Ferrari. So it won't look like this every race coming up. So the next couple of tracks, for example, Oustria and Silverstone and Spa for that matter, which is the one after those two.'re all they are all engine tracks to a large part Buz. Having said that, it's still encouraging for Ferrari. and You certainly can't count Hamilton out. and it is the key thing, I think is what the point you made. The story of Ferrari for the last few years fundamentally has been they've not been able to upgrade the car as effectively through the season as rivals like Red Bull or McLaren have So good start in this case that they have been able to do that so far, but as Abby says, there is still a long way to go. We don't even know how long to go, of course, because how long the season is depends on what happens in the Middle East. You say that, Andrew, then surely we could put Red Bull in there becausecause according to the FIA, they've got the best power unit in formula. OK, there's a lot, there's drag, there's downforce all those kind of things. But I still think that it could be the catalyst of starting Ferrari Again partarticularly with Louis Hamilton, how he's thriving. We've seen the old Lewis Hamilton come out again. And I think when a team that's been struggling And all it all comes together and you get a victory. that can be such a boost for for the factory and of course, the next couple of races Lewis Hamton has great history at British Grand Prix, It's a track that whether it rains there or whether it's glorious sunshine, Hamilton does well at. so I'm still hoping we're going to have a close battle. I think the other thing to bear in mind as well on the point that you raise is that when Hamilton's realizes that he's in a championship fight or realizes that there's a lot to compete for He kind of finds another level You often saw through the seasons that he was winning championships for his ages. he might start relatively slowly and then he'd suddenly pick up at a certain point in the season and so He's now got the scent of victory. You could hear it in his voice yesterday, even just after qualifying where he said the fight is on The fight is very much even more on now. So I suspect he will raise his game. It's a subconscious thing for racing drivers. They're not trying hard before. It's just something about the sort of groundsell of I don't know, maybe how we can explain it better because you probably had something similar in the Form onene Academy Championship a couple of years ago because you were so dominant there. But you see it with them all, they grow into into the situation and of course No one's more experienced at winning or being in that situation than Hamilton. So it's going to be really interesting to see how that affects him, but also Ferrari because one of the things they've lacked in recent years, I think, is probably the confidence that they can do it There's lots of doubts around that team. And Hamilton's a big one for sort of generating belief, not only in himself, but in the people around him So it could, you know, it could form, it could coalesce into something quite dynamic at Marineello Well it's momentum. A at the end of the day, momentum is a big thing we talk about in these championship battles and it's been kind of as you say building up gradually for Lewis getting better and better and he's now found amazing former at Barcelona in the race. and it's just keeping that momentum going for not just him but also the team. And as you say on the radio, everyone's got more morale and even his engineer when he got into the lead under the VSC, he knew how importantp that was as engineer you could hear his voice go up a few octaves. Everyone was very excited about that and and it's keeping that momentum going forward for the teams as a whole as It's very easy to kind of make mistakes and make the wrong calls and it's about Not getting ahead of themselves, of course, Ferrari in the past haven't been known for making the best decisions in dire kind of situations, let's say. So it's kind of taking a step back and really making sure they look at the bigger picture and carry that momentum forward What if you could get more from what you already do As a shelf fuel rewards member, that's just a regular weekday afternoon You get more rewards, more savings, and more special offers Earn rewards when shopping, dining out, and fueling up And all of that becomes fuel savings when you're at the pump You See? there are no extra steps and no changes to your routine, just more value built into it. And I just wonder when it comes to Italy, they're already celebrating because Kimy Antonlli at Mercedes is leading the championship. but not the best day for Mercedes. and I just I wonder, Abby, how you rate it? because George was lost it. and then Kimmy retired, so more reliability issues and I just feel Both of them have a point where they might be a bit upset about that Yeah, well, all weekend, George has been the one to be in that Mercedes. He's been so fast And yeah, just okay, there was a little bit of luck involved with the VSC, but it All of a sudden, didn't really have anything to give back and it's It's really, I think telling in a sense that that inter team rivalry, it's getting a bit heated. You're hearing Kimmy Antonlli on the radio get more emotional really trying to push past his teammate, George slowing him up but potentially. we don't know fully if it was just him being slow or if he was holding up, but it could have been a bit of a strategic play there. and then as you say Um, The reliability, I mean, McLaren having a few issues and now Kimmy was the only Mercedes kind of power unit in the top four to not have an issue it's caught up to him and it' it's kind of throwing everything out of whack for Mercedes A to find their feet pretty quickly And I think as well, to touch on Mercedes's pace, if you were looking at the last quarter of that Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton easily had the legs on George Russell, Kimmy Antone, okay, Kimmy was tucked up behind his teammate for it a large portion of that eventually making the move down the inside before he had that electrical issue. When we were looking at the times, Hamilton was a roundab Five tenth to a second, quicker. per lap and it's high degradation here around Barcelona. so we know that it's tough to keep the tyres at a optimum and deal with that degradation But I certainly and I don't know whether Andrew has a different point of view from looking at the laptes in free practice, but I certainly didn't expect that much of an advantage from Ferrari against the Mercedes on long wrong placeace. Well, I think it's a difficult race to read on sort of pure lap time just because they were on offset strategies. you know, So Hamilton obviously he was on fresher tyres in that final stint and in the lead and we know that clean air also gives an advantage. So It would be wrong, I think to assume that they have a huge race pace advantage on that basis. But I think just on it looked through the first twoo thirds of the race that they were relatively closely matched to Messages in the Ferrari, and that's certainly what they were in qualifying It was just a few hundreds, wasn't it between Russell and Hamilton on the front row. think What was interesting for me was the ebb and flow of the battle at Mercedes through the Grand Prix after what had happened in the weekend so far This was the first weekend for a while where Antonlli had looked a bit out of sorts. He missed first practice in the same way that Hamilton did actually that whereas Hamilton He took himself away he talked about between P three and qualifying and sort of reset himself mentally. and he came good in qualifying Antonlli do that and so he qualify it's not exactly terrible to qualify third, is it? But in Antonelli world these days, that is b It was his worst, it was literally his worst qualifying result of the year. But then in the race, Antonlli always look quick And you know, A the first dent, obviously he was behind Hamilton, but as soon as Hamilton got out of the way, he moved up behind Russell and he looked like the quicker Mercedes driver just as he'd looked in Canada when Russell was leading there as well It looked in that middle stint like he could have taken the lead until they were sort of both warned from the pit wall. Look, if you battle between yourselves, you're going to hand the race to Hamilton because they could already see that Hamilton was on a three stop and they would know what was going to happen in the final stint they were talking about You know, how do you be battling with Hamilton in the last few laps But still Hamilton Antono look quicker. And then of course, he did actually pass him in the closing laps. So Fr Russell's point of view, obviously mathematically in the championship, He's had a big win compared to Antonlli, not compared Hamilton obviously,'s lost ground to him He's gained eighteen points on Antelli and he needed that and it's reset some of the look. that's gone against Russell so far this year But it's another race where he got beaten by his teammate and having started two places ahead of him So that's not going to be a comfortable thought for him over the next two weeks before he get to Austria. I just wonder, we all said going into this Russell needs a strong weekend. he needs to win Was this enough to get his championship challenge back on track I mean, obviously it was good for him to outscore Kimmy, but that was as Andrew on it's only because of the issue that he had. ultimately he's been outscored by Lewis Hamilton, who's ahead of him in the championship as well. So he still has a lot of ground to make up. There's no hiding that. You know if we go back to Monaco, the Mercedes pulled twenty seconds on Lewis Hamilton, o, a bit more of anorthodox circuit. now going to Barcelona, it was kind of the opposite, okay, if the roles were reverse with Kimmy, maybe the gap weren' have been as big and so on. But I think it goes to show that The is coming down and the championship is going to get closer and closer and these little places where you can gain or lose points are going to become that much more pivotal in the long run And I wouldn't be surprised and We've seen it already This year the two Mercedades contact I think we're going to see it again at some point. They got close to doing it today. Antonelli damaged his front wing. I'm not sure I didn't see any contact where there must have been because I don't think it was damaged before he overtook George Russell. When it starts to get high tensions you obviously you know Kimy Antonlli was gutted and he was hugely frustrated as you would be George Russell the same in Canada I think they'll make contact at some point and Lewis Hamilton, I feel like almost senses that. He's been in battles with his teammate. He knows what it's like Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton contact ten years ago in Barcelona. So There's two drivers here that are hungry, really hungry. Three drivers are going to include Lewis Hammson, particularly the two Mercedes when they're battling each other I think they'll trip over themselves at some point and Lewis Hamilton is probably going to be rubbing his hands together and say, yeah, don't worry, I'll pick up the pieces. And I think some of that comes from that ent team rivalries that Kimmy has got a much younger mindset and you can see of how he drives, he's so hungry and not not I don't want to say desperately so It just has that energy about him and you can see George feels like almost he has a bit more to lose. He's got that reputation. He's been with Mercedes for a long time. theoretically should be the number one driver in the team and you can see that he's driving with a bit of that kind of rigidness. And then there's Kimy Aonelli when they're wheel to wheel. his's orggan's blazing. He's saying, get out of my way essentially or you're not coming past. and he almost It's a little bit Verstappen esque, I think in his early days and everyone complained about him, you know, you see Max in your mirrors, you you got to watch out, he's going past. It almost feels like Kimmy is getting a bit of that reputation, you know, he's not scared to rubbing wheels, o he's not driving into people either, let's say, you know, it's nothing to do of that, but He's got that aggression and I really love that about Kimmy. Well, Kimmy leads the championship on one hundred and fifty six points with Hamilton forty one points behind and Russell fifty points behind Antonlli. So as you say, it's closing up and to complete the all British podium. and it's a stat that has been in my book years because you keep thinking it's going to happen this time. But finally, all British podium, Andrew, do you want to give this stats? because it's great. nineteen sixty eight US Grand Prix, it was Jackie Stewart from Graham Hill and John Certies. And I think we've been waiting this for this Jenny, haven't we? with Norris and Russell and Hamilton all in top teams, all top drivers, two of them world Champions, one of them competing for his first title. It was going to happen sooner or later And I just want to say I think this race this season was already looking interesting, even though the mathematics were a bit pressing after Monaco in terms of a competition But this race is really livened. It's really kick startarted the season. it's sort of sort of thrown a grenade into the mix in terms of really sort of drama and the drive of the narrative. So everyone's now going to be looking forward to see what happens next in Austria. And just to point out, probably only one person sat on these soas was born in nineteen sixty eight. Nobody on these sles was born in nineteen sixty eight. How dare you fell? jck I br all that. Noere No chocolate bar for you after the rais sorry. That's definitely off the Christmas cardlist after that It did make you feel proud though, didn't it? seeing those three together. and they have been such a powerhouse when it comes to British racing, inspiring generation upon generation to get into Formula one and to get into racing. And for you, especially growing up with these massive names and wanting to achieve it It must reinforce that value. Yeah, and there's so much talent in British motorsport. I'm amazed it's taken that long to kind of break that stat and have an all British podium, to be honest, we're so fortunate to have so many British drivers across the grid Yeah, it is It's nice and it's inspiring the younger generations and showing you know, as Lewis Hamilton says very often, you've got to see it to believe it. and Yeah, he's just solidifying that all three of them doing incredible things. okay Lando was gifted the podium a little bit with with Antonlli's kind of Paor look, but It's nice to see that history happen and he was there to pick up the pieces. you know, he was there to put himself in the right position and Yeah, it's lovely to see. off course as well defending worldor Champion Lando. So it will be nice for him to get as many trophies as possible with that number one on the car Do you think McLaren will be happy with that? They haven't had the best start, have they to this season? No, I actually probably think they'll be slightly disappointed with there weekend If it wasn't Frantanlli breaking down, they weren't to be on the podium they We're looking fast in free practice. They're up mixing it with the top three in free practice. So I think they'll be disappointed because and I expected more from McLaren around this circuit. So with Llando qualifying fourth and Oscar qualified seventh showing from ac clown around a circuit where they probably should have done better, Andrew. Yeah, I'm not so sure about that. I mean, I'm looking at the numbers here. was Norris was only a second or so behind Antonlli at the time of the virtual safety car. I haven't looked at the final race resort because I was too busy writing my report while you were finishing off the final commentary laps, Alice. he was in the game. He wasn't He never looked like he was able to challenge them, but he was close and I think in the context a few races where McLaren have realized that the car's not quite there yet. They've lost their big advantage, which was Tre wear, which Andre Estella was talking about, the team principal yesterday So in that context I think to be Not to they weren't in the lead fight, but they were right behind the lead fight So I think it's not too bad and they've got more upgrades coming themselves as well Um, I think it's obvious that they're not going to win a race on merit in the immediate future But they're not not too far away and u Of course they're still learning about that car. and we saw an evidence of that this weekend where we got a message from McLaren on Friday night that they were going to break the curfew because they were having to do something about the installation of the power in the car for a reliability purpose. And that's of course been their big problem this year. So we can still see they're on the back foot in terms of integration in this new engine era not being a Ws team, of course, unlike Mercedes and Ferrari. So Of course it's not what they want, but I don't think it was as bad as it looked like it might be after qualifying. Yeah, But I think Lando had a bit of disappointment in his voice and actually just before Antonlli did break down, I think he was around about two and a half seconds off. so he looked like he was getting there, Th then he lost a bit of pace at the end. but for mes Norrish's body language, he was pleased. He was definitely certainly happy for Lewis Hamilton of course, but I think he was just yeah, a bit disappointed with getting a third place because I think genuinely think that they expected more from the weekend. Well Lando hass gone from fighting for a world Championship and Winning the worldorld Championship last year to struggling to even finish the podium in the championship exxactly So So you would feel defeated after that, you know, they're struggling for performance. It seems they don't really know where they're going to find it either. So that's the more scary prospect for McLaren. Yeah, I think it's interesting, isn't it? after, you know a a few years of you know developments always working for them. and they were always, you know, from the middle of twenty three on is a They were sort of in the game more or less. and there obviously two constructive championships in a row in twenty four and twenty five Under these new regulations, obviously not quite nailed them yet U the technical teams It can't be rubbish, canan it after winning two consecutive worldorld Championships. I would expect them to get on top of it But I do think that they've been a little bit surprised by Um how much they I mean, that perception is how much they've suffered from not being a Ws team under these new engine regulations and how much that's left them on the back foot at this stage. O, we must move on. We're running out of time. so I want to know is there any other standout performances from today that you have highlighted becausecause it's hard to look away from the top three. wereere't many other stories really were there? I mean it was at the front, it was a tense and compelling grand Prix with moments of real drama and of course, an incredible story with Hamilton winning the rest of the way down the field for a while Charlac Clele like he might sort of do something. He drove a decent race after crashing and qualifying But he kind of faded and then of course, did literally fade with retirement in the closing laps, simil sort of times around and Nelli very lackluster race from Red Bull. they were expecting Spain to be difficult and it was. I mean, P four, not bad you know, it's P four after Leclerc and Antony' retired, isn't it? It's really a P six. Um, so and after that, you know wasn't really much to talk about, wasn't there? but thankfully there was a lot to talk about at the front. I think that a double point finish for Alpine ABs? I completely miss that. they so focused on that part of the ro. You know, yeah, they've benefited from a couple of retirements. There's quite a few retirements actually in that race, but still Alpin getting a podium last time out in Monaco and now both cars in the top ten which is good progression from them of course Mercedes powerower unit at the back of those and RB as well to get both drivers in the top ten. They had their best finish as a team in Monaco and they've continued you the point scoring form should we say this weekend. This is why we get you into Look at the nuance, the detail. I mean, it was I mean, one thing to say is it was what a bleak weekend for Aston Martin, you know, both cars tired. Yeah, another one, exactly. they're counting down the days to their big upgrade, but they're so far off the pace that even if the upgrade gives them two seconds a lap, they're still going to only just be scraping into, you know, they're going to still be struggling to get out of Q three, even with that sort of gain of pace That's just that's how far behind they were I mean, just worth mentioning you touched on it earlier, Jenny, there were two significant ironies weren't there at the end of the race Obviously the VSC, which Maybe Hamilton would have won anyway as we talked about, but the VSC was caused by Alonso. It was the last Drivers have win a Grand Prix for Ferrari in Spain in twenty thirteen who'sone and done Louis Hamilton. He's not exactly his old mate, a favor. And then the other one was the guy doing in the posterary interviews was Nico Rossberg, who ten years ago crashed with Louis Hamilton when they were Mercedes teammates competing for the championship. It's a lot of love. A lot of love Ibody. Talking about love, Wh did you love the most? I think we're all going to be agreed, which is going to be something because that never happens when I'm here. But who was your hero, the driver of the day? any of us C be here and say someone ag. Yeah, exactly. you're going to go Alonzo. I'm going hold him. Of course, Andrew's gonna to say Alonzso. Yeah, it was him handing Hamilton the wins. Yeah exactly, exactly. I mean there's been on it. Yeah, you've got to say Lewis Hamilton, haven't you? because We've touched on, may have had some luck with the VSC, but once he did get out in front He just controlled it and just had the pace was quiet fairly quiet on the radio. hisis team were the team was so emotional when when he got the lead, they were like, yes, that's it. you're in the lead.
