You I've got no hope, mate, honestly. I'm sorry to say this. I don't care you could be the best driver ever in the history of the. It's a flying brick. D you just call me a flying brick? You can't help your dimensions, can you It's just enough your fate are enough and it looks like a flipping air. Hello and welcome to your latest Cckered Flag Era podcast. Lewis Hamilton has just won a race for Ferrari. The World Cup is in full flow. The sun is out, beautiful weather in the UK unheard of. My name is Harry Benjamin and I've actually come to a carting circuit today because I'm still determined to become a proper racing driver now that have my racing license, but I cannot do this podcast alone. so luckily. I've bumped into someone who can actually drive, she can even drift, and I think she's probably a better racer than me. It's Becky Evans. Hello Becky. Hello Harry. D deelighted to be joining you here? Yeah, thanks for being here. What a weekend, What a win for Louis Hamilton. Where did you watch you from? What were your thoughts?ere you emotional It was unreal. You know, I always look at Lewis Hamilton and when He gets out the car most races. he just looks in despair. So like to see him just kind of be so happy. and you know, it's the comeback story, isn't it? He's had to fight so hard in a position that people maybe didn't think that he'd be able to Push forwards and here he is back on his a game. Uncle is back forty one years old. And he still got it. New hair new hair but maybe that is the lucky charm or is it Kim K I don't know. I think why I think I think he's in a good place in his life right now. Not that I mean, this is a real hot take on it because like obviously I don't have a dye into it. But I think yeah, he just looks like he's having a good time. He's enjoying himself. But that's so important. energy. Yeah he's got having he's all about that though, isn't he? And it's not just, I mean look all that everyones spoke about the stats, how long it's been since his last win and the fact it's with Ferrari, you know, makes it emotional. they they seem to be firing on all cylinders at the moment.'s the fact It's Lewis Hamton. He is arguably bigger than the sport, right? Is that what makes this so much more emotional than normal I think it's a collection of things. I think like I said, everybody loves an underdog, loves a comeback story, and I think He was so successful and then he obviously had the situation with his eighth championship for ninths Championship. You were hoping that kind of worms again. But then, you know he went to and everyone thought this was like a retirement plan, right And they were just like, oh, he's going to pop around, have the crack and then just on But now he's here, he's fighting and you know they're listening to him and you can see that he's reallyready starting to get somewhere and it's resulted in a podium for him and like you said, it's it's been a long time since he won a race I just think he's good. I'm happy for him. You know when you're just like, go on girl. I don't think there was a I mean, I was there. I don't think there was a quiet or a dry eye in the house. I remember coming out the comedy box in just it was a sea of red. You could hear the Italian national anthem and the British National anthem. Everyone in the fans and the grandstands had like come out onto the track The evasion underneath the podium It was it was electric Maybe I'm just less emotional than you. I just looked at the screen and was like G onice. Yeah. you that Solid. Well done. What done there I did I was like I mean I think this willll be a pivotal moment not only actually in this season, probably in Formula O history, this will go down in the record books how big it is. But look we should probably say as well obviously mentioned we're carting here today, we're in front of a certain British W Champions Williams Formula One car. We're going to be joined by that certain British worldor champion later on the show to discuss everything Hamilton and why we are here cartting. But overall, I think what we've got another week off before we go racing again is this what do you think? Is this Hamilton on a charge now once you get that bit of confidence you see it with a lot of drivers. once they've got that win under their belt, they kind of get a bit they start to believe in themselves a bit. I think like racing it really is a war of attrition for your mind because you'll have real highs and then the lows are just so crushing. So when you have a high, you can carry that force. it just gives you that confidence and I think he is really going He's going to be on one, I think next weekend. I think we're going to be talking about this moment for a very long time to come Obviously, after the weekend social media has been flying. We've had a lot of hot takes come in that we're going to take a look at right now, but I did think if we're gonna do this, I'm going to grab somebody. I've got Abby Eaton with us. She's gonna to help us put the cart on the podiody in this afternoon, but we thought, you know what? Bring her to the podcast. Abby, welcome. No pressure then. Wh? I mean, I think we're good. I mean, she went out there and put a fifty two down. I'm doing a fifty three and I was very happy with that D as. So Dam? Yeah I'm in the two minute mark. Is that not Yeah but you can fire people off. Yeah. So we have to be like wary of you. He's an active chicain. I' break myself. I raing. I'm just here to make all of your lives harder. So It is a non contact sport. but let's be forget Apparently, apparently. So let's jump in with these hot takes. This is where people are sending in Thoughts, Just flying thoughts. We likeem. We like 'em One of the top ones somebody said Jack Lanard zero nine in the next two to three races, I believe The Mercedes cars will crash into each other I think it's getting testy out there. I think think I think there's going George is not happy. Highly probable. We saw a little bit of Canada so didn't we already I that Canada, I thought that was where it was going to happen Yeah then Obviously then kind of Monaco, you can't really go side by side, but then I thought the weekend was gone. it was gonna happen because George is on the back foot now and he's got this young hot shot who everybody loves, the team surrounds him with love and everything Surely, ten years ago was when Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton came together in Barcelona. I honestly thought we werears, Yeahah, exactly. you know What's the next face Austria? I think it could be possible. George is going to put his elbows out at some point Is it going to be George? going into Kimmy. think so You know, I'm going to put out there. I don't want to manifest it, but at the same time, I think he's probably like sick of everybody being like, giveive me And then he's just like, what about me, George?? You know I'm going to go the other way and say it's probably going to be Kimmy. Not on a more of a if he gets behind George, a bit of frustration because he'll This probably potentially be the quicker car. and there's going to be a bit algi bi just to get to the front. I don't think it's going to be obviously nothing intentional, but maybe just a lack of experience maybe coming into it. He's been doing all right so far. I give him that. Interestingly, that was another hot take. Kimmy has George on pace, but George has him on experience and pace is more valuable. Would you agree with that Oh It's a long season and I've no doubt that George is going to find the extra bit purse again. Yeah And I still I don't know where the pressure is more on George or on Kimmy because ultimately George should be the quicker, more experienced guy infront and he's not been. so I think actually the Press is more on George to catch up Yeah, I mean, I agree. I think what we saw base of last weekend actually George really fought back. He was quicker than Kimmy up until the race and then got overtaken by Kimmy Yeah. So got hurt while Kimmy does have the more out pace right now George does have maybe a more calm ahead when it comes to like wheel to wheel fighting. So maybe that's where it will swing back his way. But I remember saying at the start of the year, I think we'll have a title fight between the two Mercedes and I think base off experience, George will get it because Kimmy he's still quite young, second year prone to making mistakes. after what he's done this year, what we saw in Monica I't gonna to eat my words there, I think. So I don't think experience necessarily is the winning factor here. That'd be an interesting one. We' interested to see what people out there think.. Obviously we've got to talk about Louis There's lot hardot tes about Louis Logan J. Watson says, I think Hamilton is back. Let's go. Do you think this is The return, the rise of the Phoenix, so to say Hamilton I mean, it's brilliant for everybody involved. hundred percent I think there are a few track specific things that helped him along the way. but ultimately he is feeling that we're a world apart from where we were last year with Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari And I think that will be significant. There's a reasoning second in the championship right now splits the two Mercedes and you know what? I think Lando Norris alluded to it. If Ferrari who will get like a little engine up grade later this yearit, all they need is a bit more of a tune up. And my word Hamilt's in the game here. Yeah. I love the simplicity. It's just a little ch little this is a dial, right? a little turn up A it of sumer su upers, give it the ch I'toke I think it's been com for a while,. I' bit young for that. Dast c't a joke, don't I. Okay, so another one that we had Scott Willis say is, I think Antonelli needs to watch his tale now Do you think he does? Do you think that I disagree. No, I don't think so. Why? Why should he? Yeah He retired but not his own fall. Luck plays a part in the Formula one Luck has certainly hindered George Russell up to this point. At some point it's got to swing the other way and maybe and that's what we saw at the weekend just gone. You know, but I don't think he's chasing his tail. I think he's doing a really he's in an incredible position. I think watching watching his tail, not chasing it, you know? But also when they've had the two battles, them you know chasing each other all the time, actually when he gets his head down and looks forward, good's pretty safe on that' when you actually behind you've already about George percent to overtaking him.. That's when the problems start to happen. So you know he'll have a really good team around him and kind of saying to him, Look, forget about that. What George does you know George will do. you've got the pace at the moment, justust make sure you're putting it you where you need to and try and keep moving forward Abby, what's your thoughts on the Kim K Curse? Obviously the towel. And then you gave the towel back. Now he has the towel back and in his possession and then suddenly boom, mechanical Oh mean I totally believe it. it put it out there I like Kim K. I mean she's she's done the same magic on that towel and how would you feel as a driver? You've just sweated won a race and then your towel's being nicked at the end of it. I loved it. I absolutely loved it to be fair. And actually really like fair player to Kim the next race, you know a bit of ban to back, but she knows how to play social media and like the amount of pieces of content, like big pieces of content that I saw out after that and she plays into the joke. Like Kim always knows that she might end up being the butt of the joke so she plays into it and I think girl. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. But yeah ifone stb my tail, I'd be livid Yeah. D' touch my t. I'll know for later. All right, I get it. I'm hot' ready. It is. It war off. Stehven Hamel says, this is a real hot take. I read this and I was like, that's spicy Charle Cler is his generation' Daniel Ricardo. Flashes a greatness, but mid Overall,. Iolutely didn't listen to that because of the commentary going, what Eactly what he's saying is Chude Clire is his generations Daniel Ricardo Flashes the greatness, but mid overall. So he's saying like he's mid I think is with Danny Rig, like he He he went he had that success at Red Bull and then Max Verstappen came in and it was just because his down. And then it never ever really quicked for Ricardo anywhere else. Well, exactly. But then would he would he have been you know second fiddle the whole time, but arguably would have had more race wins. Whereas on the other side, Charlotte Clert has apart from this first year has been with Ferrari through and through their junior team driver and he clearly has seen that the options elsewhere aren't that gray And ultimately, I obviously think winning with Reds overrides everything else for him. Yeah. But for Charlac Cl unlike maybe Ricciardo, his problem I think, which will rear it its head more and more is that he does make mistakes still and he crashed crashed in Monaco Barcelona crashed in Monaco not all his fault. That one but he pushed too hard in Barcelona. tried to be like Louewis Hamilton And he couldn't. Yeah. I will say there was something very funny about in Monica. You know, ance Lance crashed in the sae spot and then Charl went out and crashed in the sae spot and it was only after Chharles's They were like, whoa whoa was something wrong with the track? They Stroll is it? Everyone's like strolling stroll doing stroll things, stroll, doing stroll things. And then ye I agree with that. But I don't I'm not I don't think I can't I just dec something to not say notot yet. Charlotte is not this generation Ricardo. not. I think more talented. I thought it was pretty spicy because he's a good driver. He's a very, very good driver, but I think If he just needs to stick with his team, whereas I was just going to say, do you think he's going to ride it out his full career with Ferrari? Well it's just a signed for an extension. So he's going to you know, he's basically signed his life away to Ferrari, I think. So unless there's some sort of unless they drop off a cliff. Yeah I don't think he's got a chance to stillough You know? It's just a pressase stge Winning with Red is what every Sebastian Bettel said it Everybody's a Ferrari fan Whether you drive for Mercedes, McLaren, Redull, whatever. Yeah. And I think for Chaan Neclc, I still think the best is yet to come. And being alongside Hamilton, I think He will raise his game even more. I think it's Hamilon going to Ferrar. he's put a lot more energy back in the team again and ignited that fire again. Charles is there on the inside and can see actually you know he's renewed his contract. That's the place he wants to be and hopefully they'll all get dragged up together B back on top again, because we all love of a Ferri wind, don't Aby, you've got race to get to, but anything you want to throw in the mix as your own little hot take on F one this year, what are you thinking? I'll put it on you. Um I thing It me How many more races have we got? We got lots of races?ollow. I think Kimmy's going to win it That's my prediction Sign seal delivered me an that twenty as well ch. heard it at first. Abbyon predicts There you go, it's a really long season though. And there you have it. That was a hardot. lovely hot. Stad n. That was a hot t Well, I'll tell you what Harry, we can talk about Lewis Hamilton winning to the Cowscom home, but just w you got race license, Do doesn't mean that you can just keep going on about it. But there is one man here that can ultimately talk about this and it is nineteen ninety six F one champion, Damon Hill. It's so good to have you here. Thank you very much. I mean, David, what do you think of Hamilton's win on Sunday? It's a big win, not only for Rarry, but for him himself personally It's wonderful. I think it's the only way describ it. I mean it was it's a dream of his to Recapture, let's be honest, it's to recapture an opportunity to win his eighth title that was cruelly denied him. So he's in now with at least a sniff of being able to win races is w one and now he's also second in the worldor Championship. So game more, I'd say Do you want to stop one. so Your win In nineteen ninety six the Japanese Grand Prix Gap to your next win at the nineteen ninety eight Belgian Grand Prix happened to be six hundred and eighty six days, which is the same amount as Lewis Hamilton went windless From twenty twenty four to twenty twenty six in Barcelona. It's coincidental number, but obviously we don't set out to be winless, Harry, you know trying not to have those stats. I was like when that was coming out of his mouth, I was like, all right's all stat. And he took a whole compversis. were days. Well, I mean, that's about as far as I draw any comparison to me in Lewis Hamilton. I mean, he's won how many hundred, I don't know the number it's ridiculous And you know, he's been a winning machine for so long. this barren spell. and we've been through the emotion as we always do with Lewis of the pain of Au Dhabi and then also not having a competitive car Mercedes, isn't it being very difficult for him to seem to recapture his form and last year where he hit the depths you know of despair and now he's bounced back and he he's delivered and he's got a car. let's be honest, he's He's made Ferrari listen to him is what it seems to me is he's made them go, listen, I need this from the car, some of it I think it's the regulation suited style of driving a little bit, but I mean clearly the brake story is a very important one because to drivers, that is a crucial part of our work as a driver. You have to have faith if you're going to break to the very last millisecond, you have to know it's going to work and you have to be able to control the car going into the corner. So he seems to have got that sorted And that was because he probably banged the table at Ferrari enough, and they listen to him and these They're going in this direction. I mean it's an interesting point on Ferar, isn't it? Be it's not just any other team. it's an institution, It's a culture and they have been set in their ways for so many years. So do you think it now it takes somebody like Lewis Hamilton be the turnaround in that team or maybe Fred Vassu and his impact now we're seeing them coming with all sorts of upgrades. they bought loads to Barcelona, didn't they? And they're actually changing the technical team around Lewis Hamilton as well to what he wants. So is it Ferrari just are now starting to listen? Well, they've made a huge investment in him, haven't they? So, you know, it was a silly thing to do if they didn't listen to him But the doubt, I suppose, in their mind was Has he still got it themselves? you know, they needed proof as well that he could deliver if they put all this investment and time in But they've done it and Vedvaser is a very, very valuable ally in that department because he will be able to see Lewis and knows Lewis from the very early days and he can say to Ferrari, listen, you've got to give him what he wants or you know, Lewis will be alone in that organization and it would be it's not a place where you want to be alone You know, it is, it's There's so much pressure on Ferrari that they sometimes look a bit lost and like they need direction. And when a driver starts to ask for the direction That's not typically something they're comfortable with. you know withith Michael, he managed to drive the direction, but he had Ross Braunn there. So in effect, I suppose you could say Fravverer is Lewis is Ross Braun. It's so wonderful to see him get out and actually have tears of joy. You know how much that meant to him, like obviously what the feedback that he was giving to the team, the three stop strategy, like everything managed to work for them this weekend and it's I think for him, it's just relief Yeah, D deffinitely relief and also he puts himself under a lot of stress and pressure because He has as a from a very early age, set himself goals and dreams that he wants to fulfill And I expect he probably wondered how the story was going to end And you know if it had ended without him ever winning at Ferrari and getting to the end of this season and it looks a bit sad That would be that would be difficult for him to swallow. and I think he's now put back to bed that nightmare and now the dream is back on. Last year we were talking about Is he going to retire Is he going to get himself out of this hole? I remember Budapest last year was a proper low for Hamilton. Now are we asking the question? Okay there's still a fair gap to Kimmy Antonlli at the top of the championship, but is Hamilton a contender for the twenty twenty six title now? Listen, it's a very tight championship. I mean, I think there's going to be some airbing and flowing that people still have to development packages to come the Ferrari put theirs on. it's done what they hoped for. It's given them a faster car McLaren are looking enviously now at Ferrari and saying You know, they've done something right They're the people to catch now. so they've done an incredible job. And when you bring in a new regulation, there's a lot of low hanging fruit and they're definitely harvesting those at the moment. So it could be someone would leapfrog them maybe Red Bull will suddenly leapfrog. So the championship is far from clear And Kimmy has had an awfully good run early in the season with no bad luck. Now he's had one bit of bad luck. Yeah. We're going to have wet races out there. peopleeople are going to spin off, We're going to have more mechanical failures It's it's like Fred Basser said, listen, this is just one race. Let's not get too carried away But it's a great story. I mean, he' said it's great.'s the Lewis Continuation of that dream story, isn't it Well we've got to talk about the all British podium at the weekend. I mean, three British drivers, we obviously had Naris, Brussel and Hamilton up there. but the last time they had an all British podium was nineteen sixty eight and I'm pretty sure it was your dad that was on that one Yes, that's right. It was my dad Jackie Stewart won the race. I think my dad and then John Cerertes as well. but they didn't have a podium back there. So the pictures of the three Brits standing on the podium with the Union flag above them was fantastic Sadly they didn't do that back in nineteen sixies. they they have reefs around them all. Yeah, they used to give them what my dad used to describes as a private hedge. Basically it was a winn's laurel, not I think areuth is what you get when something awful. I feel like that' looks like a Christmas stick up on your front door at Christmas. A Yeah. Yeah. It' a big? Yeah, they were very big. They literally were cultured. Yeah,. But they did look amazing, but you know they didn't have they were doing it for the camera, them. they weren't doing it for television because it wasn't hard of them Televised. Well, I mean there were a lot of coincidental stats but still underlines what an incredible weekend Barcelona was. And I mean, we've got a week off now before we go to Austria. So we'll see who bounces back there. We should probably address we've already sort of said we're carting today and we we are in our overalls. We're sat in front of your Williams, Damon Why are we here, Damon? Do you want to let us know? I don't know. whyy are you here? Well, that's good actually. But anyway I know why I'm here. Why are you Be it's the Damon Hill Cartoon Challenge for Holo, which is the charity that I helped start about twenty years ago for people with learning disabilities, young people who have had they've run out or the state has run out of ability to provide them with things to do. So we do the rest now. We get them So we had our young people out there cartting today. It was fantastic. We had about fifteen of them out there. in carts and you can imagine that was brilliant for them We do all sorts of activities so it's a fundraising cart day and we've got lots of really generous people out there having fun in cars Sounds like a good time, so do I have a chance of beating you around the circuit later. You went out. did in your practice. What time did you do? fifty three point six? Okay. Why, whereere are you at? I think I put it on poll I think Maybe you warmed it up for me. I'll give him a good r, But it's probably gone now. I was twenty two, I think.ait I love this. I've got no hope,, honestly. I'm sorry to say this. I don't you could be the best driver ever in the history of the world. And I'm afraid you're carrying too much, you know's a penalty. He's like an air blockade I just went behind him, used him as a slipstream and went round him. he's just He's a flying brick. He's the unimogue of Go cart. I mean't T me a flying brick. But you can't help your dimensions, can you It's just enough your feet are enough and it looks like a flipping air. I said I've got my racing license yet. I'm so glad Ive found someone with bigger feet than me. What have you got? I've got eleven eleven ye, you ask nothing on me, manate. Nothing. Okay, so I clearly don't have a chance of beating you. I may as well go home. Damon Hill call aace. It's a fun race. I told them all before. it's a fun race. As long as I win, everyone's happy No, I think it's brilliant. So thank you for letting us tag along here as well, David. and everyone knows that they can have a little look at the charity online as well. Damon, look, thank you for joining us. I think you're next to come with us on the five live team at the big one. The British Grand Prix. British Grand Prix. Wow, that's going to be something, isn't it? I don't think Louis can put any more bums on seats because the think it's sold out anyway, but it's going to be a big one I hope the weather stays for it. Yeah, let's hope so. Well look, Damon, thank you very much. We shall let you go back on track. Thank you Damon. Thank you,, for a go. So Harry, obviously all the chat. We've had lovely Damon Hill with us And I didn't want need to get rinsed by an F one champion. so I was just gonna to keep it to myself. but the car that sat behind us that you did reference was his ispis I didn't look at it properly. He calls himself an FN expert. But he said it was his. It' my first day on the job and I know that. He did a talk out there where he was like, o my car's up there and' I didn't look at it properly Moving on. Kimmy Aonlli was the bill for this next part of the podcast.. We've talked so much, Becky about Ferrari and Great for Italy.. But they've already had a champion elect this year. Kimmy Antonlli, absolutely bossing it. I mean, he's doing so well like every time I see him, it's like, you forget that's a nineteen year old boy. Have you met a nineteen year old boy recently? No. No. Well, trust me, like they're just very young and silly and there he is like boting it. Have you met him? have I met him. I did the launch of the AMGGT couupe in LA and him and George and Toto were there and Toto charming as ever. George was like Hello. and he was just like he and and Kimy was really sweet. He just like like you said went round and shook everybody's hand and he just he just seems really happy to be here. You know what I mean? You know he's just having a great time in life right now.'s like I'm nineteen, I'm winning races G got lots of points in the bag And I'm just being a kid, except my life is mental. I think I wonder if it's a bit of naivety, but not you know, just innocence, maybe is the better word, because there's press conferences on a Thursday ahead of every race weekend, right? A guy called Tom Clarks and hosts them Yeah. And the one in Barcelona. So Kimmy comes in first And straightway he sits down, like really quite energetic, sat on the sea, his legs sort of swing And then he goes, Hey, Tom, like really like just so he's like, how are you? How was the marathon? Like he knew like Tom had run the London marathon and stuff like this and wanted to ask all these guys. He was just so engaged and like a lovely guy. he's off the social media generation, you have you seen his vlog? Have you seen his little Instagram real vlogs? They're great. I really enjoy them because it's just a very quick like snap look into his day and he's just like running around with his trainer and he's got his like private content guy with him. And he's just taking George Russell's pass, paddock pass drawing on it and just that's his biggestoke. He's like, got wait for George to see his pass. And I'm like, this, this boy partart time, forormulan driver, full time loogger. Yeahah It's good stuff No's good stuff. You' got to be these days in Formulan and you' got to be three hundred sixty degrees of content also this man has grown up. He's a social media native. He's never not known social. Like M and you knew it before, knew life before social media. he's of the generation where they grew up. No, I know. Well suppose where he's native, Italy. and when you go there, he is like a hero right now and it's his second season of Formula O one Can you imagine The scenes If Not only if he wins a World Championship as Kimy Azlli, but if one day Hey went to Ferrari And won races at a worldorld Champion. Do you think that could ever happen I mean, I'd like it to happen. I feel like it's the natural fit, isn't it? You know I believe that Kimi Aoni has the He has the ability to become Rossy status W within Italy. you know, like just as one of those synonymous names with Motorsport in Italy. and like you say, if if he ever became eraser in red Italy. I think it would be the ultimate Union Surely one day. I think it will happen definitely. It' at the moment he's going through the training through Mercedes and I feel like it's like a rite of passage. It's like you do that bit and then you go to the Did you know that Ferrari had the chance to sign him as a kid? they turned it down And then Toto W Mercedes swooped in and got him as a young kid. I think Toto is a great leader and I think he really does well in seeing potential in people and he nurtures them. Likeike I said, I've seen him around him as well. It's very much he becomes part of the family and you're developing that human as well as that racing driver. Yeah. So I think he will do well to create a fantastic race. I mean, he already has, I mean, look at his track record so far But yeah, I do think one day he will fly the nest, so to say and he will end up there. I'd like to see that anyway. So many good story in Formul one right now. I don't know if you can hear that but we're in a marquee and the wind has clearly picked up and I don't know if it's about to collapse. I saw Harry I saw Harry's eyes like darting there. But I tell you what, we've actually we've got to do some racing. We' got to get out in a go cart now. I cannot wait to get out on this race guys because I have seen this man in a go cart and He what did you say? Flying bricks Flying break.
