What a race. Kimmy Antonelli, winning the Monacu Grand Prix for the very first time, his fifth consecutive race win this season. What a performance from the young Italian driver. We're going to analyze everything we've seen. I'm Rosanna Tanant, and joining me here in Port Hercule. the incredible harbour in Monteclo is our lead commentator Harry Benjamin And the BBC's F one correspondent Andrew Benson, what a setting we have for our podcast today guys. The beautiful harbour, so many boats around us, music blaring out, the party's really started but the party. The biggest party is for Kimmy Antonei surely tonight. I mean it is. I don't know about you, Betdy. my brain's still fried from those last ten laps. I'm trying to get around. What a grand Prix that was real test for Kimmy Aonlli today to lead every lap from pole position to the victory to deal with that restart, the lengthy weight with the red flag, a fast starting Lewis Hamilton alongside him at the restart. so impressive and he has truly etched his name into the history books, a champion in waiting a Monaco Grandrix winner. Andrew, we spoke about whher Kimmy Antoneelli could soak up the pressure. He came into this weekend with a forty three point lead over his teammate George Russell. Russell's been trying mind games, trying to heap the pressure on Antonelli, but it didn't seem to faze him at all. and this track is so demanding. Rosana, the suilives just keep coming for this young man nineteen years old as he say five grand Prix wins in a row He's answered all the questions. George Russell came here trying to play psychological games. Within forty eight hours or so, he was admitting that he was struggling to keep pace with Antonlli He's turned things around so much since his rooie season last year and this was an absolutely perfect weekend on every level, brilliant pole position. Before this race, he'd lost positions at the start every single time, sprint or Grand Prix, so the pressure was really on But he nailed it both at the Grand Priart and at the restart after those chaotic l few laps with the incidents, with the crashes and the red flag and everything. And just brilliant. Well let's go back to the race start, the original race start, where he was lining up on the front row with Max Versaer, the four time worldld champion who's won twice around these streets before He didn't get going. It was a nightmare start or actually not even a start for Max Versappen, DNFing right from the off. So did that let Kem Aelli off the hook or do you think he still put on a great performance holding off the two Ferraris? There's a bit of both there. I think I think there was a bit of bited breath from both the front runners because actually the two Ferraris who were lurking behind, they are the ones that we know More often than not, get a good start. and actually as Andrew said, it's Kimy Aonlli who struggles with his starts in that Mercedes Max Vstappen hasn't been brilliant with his starts in that Red bull this season. So there was a chance we could be see Lewis Hamilton nick through. In the end, Max Verstappen's actual initial getaway was actually fine, but then he just completely bogged down and it just completely went from him. and Kimmy Aell then had Sand Devok to himself Antelli had a good start. I think he would have been fine. I think Max Verstappen would have had the outside going to Sandovort. It's really tricky to make that work in the opening stages. So think Aonelli did exactly what he needed to do. and it's fortunate for Kimmy, unfortunate for Max Verstappen and what happened with his suspected engine issues off the line. Yeah, we got a bit confused, didn't we in commentary as to whether his rac engineer J Piero Labiiezi was asking him to bring it home to the Cckered flag or whether it was to bring it home to the garage so we can put it to sleep for a little bit. And it was to be the end for him wasn't it? Andrew. And it's a shame. And know after the podium in Canada, that first one for the new Red Bull forord power trainer Its not gone his way as it? Well actually as Verstappen said after the race to Euranna, actually this had been a really positive weekend for Red Bull. He nearly got pole position. you know, and even second on the grid he had hopes of obviously beating Antonlli off the line, but it wasn't to be it was an engine problem that put paid him. And of course, Verstappen and Jampiero Lambiiezi, they had more information than we did on that first slight when they were talking to each other. So they knew that the engine problem was terminal Of course that opened the door for Ferrari, but I think the most impressive thing about those first few laps, twowo laps into the race, Kimmy Aonelli was two point nine seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton and that lead built quite a lot five seconds or so after about eight laps, Then he backed off because he had overheating rear brakes for about ten laps, then he went again after that point, he was in total control, no longer anywhere near in all afternoon He had the purple little symbol next to his name saying that he'd got the fastest lap pretty much exactly for the whole time and And it was Peter Bonington, Kimmy Antonelli's race engineer who said, we don't need these fastest laps. Of course you don't get a point for fastest. Just chill out, bring it home. like we don't need to push. But you know what? Antonelli will have been sitt in the car and I bet you he says in the press conference, which hasn't happened yet. We're doing this so quickly after the end of the race that he was so in control When you're in that much control, you're filling up one with your car Especially when it's the fastest car and you're the fastest driver in it, the fastest slap's no big deal. In fact, it's better to keep going at some kind of speed because then you don't lose your concentration I think it was a drive beyond his yearsars as well. If forget he is nineteen. I know forormmer one driver is getting younger and younger by the year. J to put this into perspective of what we saw from Kimy last year, you know, all the hype and just I think we all thought is this actually the wonder kid that Tosa all thought he was going to be? Tosald told us to shut up about that a few races ago now and we're continuing to sort of allude to it. but I think we really have got to shut up about it now because this is Kimy Anonelli. He is out out Putting in the fastest laps. Let' not forget Pul was sealed by what less than half a tenth of a second on Saturday and to have the frame of mind have Bono in your ear a man of wise words telling you to slow down, but he's got it all in hand He's the youngest ever former line driver to get the Grand sland. So pole, lead every lap of a race, fastest lap and take the victory. He just keeps breaking the records. Well, Harry, at the moment, he looks unstoppable. He could break like every record. You know I'm starting to think about you nine wins in a row for Sebastian Vetel in twenty thirteen, youngest ever world champion, ten wins in a row You know, Max Verstappen, it's just they just keep coming and it's like, you know, it is the fastest car And we've had a race this weekend we're overtaking is basically impossible as we saw through the race But normally so the jeopardy at the start was does Antonoli lose the start position and therefore lose the win potentially. But that's going to go away again from now on because overtaking is always possible this year after Monaco. So even if he you know they've got the fastest car, even if he loses the position at the start again, you can expect him to come through. George Russells admitted he needs to go away and do some homework to try and understand why he can't keep up with Antonelli at the moment and let's not forget. I think probably the most statement statistic of the weekend is Russell is not even second in the championship anymore. He's now two points behind Lewis Hamilton, who I think if I've got my master right is sixty points behind more than sixty points I should say sorry behind Kimmy Antonelli How is he going to be stopped at this rate just to finish off the Kimy Antonlli point, even the world's media are trying to throw the European season as a bit of a banana skin in there for Kimy Antoni. last year, he struggled with the European season. Well, hello, newewsfash. We've just started the European season. It doesn't seem to be a bogey track for him. I don't know whether next weekend will be as well in Spain. It feels like nothing is going to stop Kimy Antonelli this season He's learned the hard way in that European season. I remember it was Ima, you know his home raace he's born in Bologna. He brought all of his schoolmates last year and it was a distraction for him. and he has learned the hard way. That first ever practice outing the year before in Monza looks super quick, crashed it into the wall quite badly before it even signed the contract, D didnn't even have the best F two season either He clearly incredibly talented and raw, but he's had to develop and learn actually quite quickly and the hard way in a short amount of time. Yeah, there's really some specific and really important differences between last year and this year. First of all, he's not a rookie anymore.. Second of all, there were some changes to the Mercedes car at the start of the European season is last year, which really knocked his confidence with the way it was turning into corners And it took him, they had to revert to their previous rear suspension, which was the change that had affected him later in the season. Then he got his confidence back and towards the end of the year he was coming back towards George Russell's sort of pace. Now also this year, the cars have changed completely. different aerodynamic philosophy. they respond in a different way. We' seeing this with Lewis Hamilton. you drive him in a different way A much more aggressive sort of almost like go kart kind of driving style. Antoneelli is really getting on with that in the same way Hamilton is at Ferrari, whereereas Russell's struggling with that. He's a much smoother driver, he's not getting the tyres to work for him. So there's no reason at the moment to think that Antonelli will struggle in that way because the circumstances are different. I think it's also perks of a second year with a team You know, you have a bit of an input into how the car is going to feel ahead of the season. We're seeing it with Hamilton as well. You have more comfort, the communication is better with your engineering team around you as well. That doesn't happen overnight. Some people it just clicks. Some people in whatever industry you're in, you might not click immediately. and now things are firing on all cyates, Frinelli, he's got great people around him and that will be a massive benefit too. Of course, he will hit trouble No season runs perfectly smoothly. There will be reliability problems you assume. He'll probably make some mistakes along the way, but he's got such a big lead now that he can kind of relax into it. The pressure is almost off, even though the pressure is never off in Formula one. It doesn't even look like he's under any pressure up to this point, but he's got no reason to be anymore, so he can just relax into the driving in the way that he already is doing And I'm sure he can ride out those storms. Of course, Ferrari could progress McLaren could get their car more on the pace. There have been threats to Mercedes so far, but there certainly weren't any Antonelli and them this weekend. So Kimmy Antonelli, your race winner here in Monaco, extending his lead in the championship. We' then got to look at P two and that's Lewis Hamilton, both here in Monaco and now also as we've already mentioned in the standings. It's finally clicking with Lewis feels like he's getting more comfortable with the car, more comfortable with the team, he's got his new race engineer. Are we expecting these sort of results now on the regular from Lewis Hamilton? Because it was the same in Montreal last time out? Well he made some pointed remarks earlier in the weekend about you people writing him off last year, which we never did, but of course even the BBC were asking questions about Louewis Hamilton. What's gone wrong? Be he had such a difficult year you know he was wearing his heart on his sleevesvers. you know Ranner, a number of the interviews that you did with him. It was like, I'm not enjoying this. I'm not looking forward to coming back next year. I'm not quick anymore. You know he didn't understand what was happening. He's really got his moojo back this year. Of course, he had never lost his self belief. He believed there were reasons last year, but he's now ahead of Charleac Clerc on the head head and qualifying and that's really saying something because Charleaclerc is incredibly fast He looks at home in the Ferrari car, more at home in the Ferrari team. Now of course He's not going to challenge Antinelli for the leader of the championship because Ferrari aren't in a competitive position to do that. But we're definitely see we're back to seeing more the Lewis Hamilton we expect to see the grand effect cars that he didn't like so much since twenty twenty two to twenty twenty five are behind him now and he's reveling in this new situation I loved listening to Lewis yesterday when he was talking after qualifying, obviously out qualifying Charles around the streets that Charleclerc grew up on. I think he saw that as a small victory and he was very quick to point out. He obviously listens to you, Andrew a lot because you often say Charleclerc is the fastest driver over one lap in Formula One and he said, a lot of people talk about Charleaclerc being the fastest over one lap, but I think I kind of still got it Well was a lot of people, Andam.. But he was quite tentative. It was actually quite endearing to be so tentative about blowing his own trumpet. I mean, we're talking about a seven time world champion. Of course he's rapid over one lap, but I do think the self belief must have been wavering slightly over the last few years. so it's great to see him challenging rightide at the front. and it's such a romantic story the link up with Lewis and Ferrari. Well the thing about Hamilton Rosana is that you know whether he's doubting himself or not because he wears his heart on his sleve and he tells you that he's doubting himself. He literally almost said it in those words didn't Qick anymore Perhaps else Perhaps Fari need to change driver. know that's one thing he said last year. Of course he doesn't really mean that deep down, but he was questioning why? why? why am I not performing in this car? But here we are, new season, new types of cars, he's much more at home. and you know we started this day thinking maybe he could win the Monaco Grandbrix, Maybe we even looked at the restart Harry with ten laps to go thinking maybe in fact we even said it on commentry, didn't we? Maybe Hamilton can get into the lead. There was all sorts of shenanigans with safety car distances and what have you going on at various points, but he escaped a penalty for that. And it's great to see Hamilton back where he belongs, you know, because it is you one of the greatest drivers of all time, statistically the greatest driver of all time It wasn't the real Louis Hamilton the last few years and here he is again being the real Louis Hamilton and I'm sure he's looking forward to the rest of the season as a result. I think Hamilton will get a victory this year in Reds for Ferrari. I think back to back second place finishes. I think the main thing holding him back at the moment will'll see every track we go through in this new era really presents something quite different with the way the characteristics affect the car, the engine recovery systems and whatnot I think Variia are just missing a little bit and hopefully they can bring that with upgrades across the European season and just find that little bit that Hamilton is missing in particular. But with this engineer, evenven though I know he's an interim engineer, Carlos Santi seems to really be getting on with him as well. his off track life seems to be booming as well. you know I know we laughed about it, but Kim Kardashian was here this weekend was But also you know his mother was there in Canada last weekend and he's just seems in all sense of his life now and to come back to your point about wearing harness sleeve, he needs that in order to perform well. And you know he still got it. We had a nineteen year old take the win. We had a twenty one year old finish third and a forty one year old finish in the middle of the. He still got it. There's hope for everyone. I mean Be we get too excited about Ferrari, you know, they are a long way off Mercedes on average qualifying pace and this was probably the circuit most suited to the characteristics of their car. So we'll go to Barcelona next weekend and I don't expect Ferrari to be a threat to Mercedes there. There are There's some politics going on at the moment in Formula onene around engines to do with next year's rules, linkedIn with the development and upgrade opportunities that are part of this year's rules. We don't quite know how that's going to all pan itself out, but it looks like for I have got a new engine in the wings for potentially the Austrian Grand Prix, which is the one after Spain. Let's see what do if that's true, let's see what they can do with that new engine because if they don't get an engine upgrade, I think it's going to be hard for them to beat Mercedes in a normal race without anything strange happening. What if a marginal gain unlocked greater performance. Snap Dragon. That's how. Let's talk about Lewis' his teammate Charl Leclerc then because he definitely had the favourite tag I think on his back coming into this weekend. He's gone so well here in the past with some bad luck, but he knows what it takes now to win around these streets. He was right up there until he was in the wall. He'd been complaining about his brakes and he's been complaining about them for some time now. But he says that's what led him into the wall this afternoon. Not the asphalt coming away Anthony No the final part of the track. He's convinced it was brak What do we reckon? I mean, he said it in the heat of a moment, didn't he and look he obviously hasn't liked the braes all weekend L didn't like them in Canada either. I think he'll look back on it and the fact that Lance Stroll you know two laps prior had a carbon copy incident. I think it was more of an effect of the track breaking up and asphalt the marbles, the bits that break off from the tyre really building up there because as soon as both Stroll and then Lecl took the wide entry point into Anthony Nos, the front left just stopped working and it picked up all sorts of marbles and then straight into the barrier. Yeah. I don't think he's going give up on this break thing I'm going read to you what Leclerc said after the race. He says it doesn't help to have asphalt that's coming off But the data speaks for itself. It's extremely frustrating. I've always been very honest, no matter how many mistakes I do. I would hate to look at myself in the mirror and see myself finding excuses when I do a mistake. So that's why I'm always bluntly honest when I'm in front of the cameras. I'm not going to take any of it today. I touched the brakes. On the front brakes, it just braked a lot more than I thought And in theraes in the rear brakes there was no deceleration at all That's what I've been dealing with for two races now. He was talking about this in Canada. It's not what led to the error that he made in qualifying when he crashed at D. But he's making a marked point with that statement to his team. that he's really not happy. having just come into this weekend signing an extension with Ferrari, he feels like he's clearly not being listened to with what he wants and equally we saw that in the first part of the r where you they was behind Hamilton and Hamilton had had a five second time penalty hanging over him for speeding in the pit lane. and then we had the first safety car come out and they decided to double stack under that safety car and Hamilton was ahead. The crew don't touch the car for five seconds and that held up Charlotte Clt and he could not understand Why that happen Be if that hadn't happened and a normal race ensued, Charle Leclerc was a net second. He would have inherited that from Lewis Hamilton with the mistake Hamilton made for speeding in the pit lane. So I think Leclerc is pretty riilled up at the moment. Yeah, there was some sort of internal inter team politics going on there, wasn't there? Because Leclerc was set to take second place, but then they the way they did the sh the situation with the pit offops sur around the two safety car periods, he didn't get that second place. so maybe he's annoyed about that but it doesn't sound like that's the main thing on his mind. You know, just to carry on about him, he's talking about there's been some differences with the brakes between the cars. He didn't think it had been a disadvantage for him. but here and in Montreal with cold tyre temperatures And the t' being more sensitive when you're on the limit, it's been an absolute nightmare. I'm weighing my words. He's obviously very, very upset. Today I look like an idiot. When you look like an idiot for a mistake of your own, it's fine, but this is borderline dangerous Wow We'll have to watch and see what happens when we get to Barcelona to see whether they can rectify something. Not much time to do that, is there? Is he suddenly regretting signing this contract extension? I doubt it It curz her out. That's a bit old school. Sure it was an eonics Electronics signature. Surely So yeah, a very difficult day and weekend for Charl Leclerc, who I'm sure wanted to take poll and the win here in front of his home crowd, not to be, but Ferrari pick up some points nonetheless with Lewis Hamilton. And then we spokeen about Maxapppen like unable to take part in the race essentially right from the off. hisis teammate Isac Hajar, another driver we heard a lot from over the radio ot enough power. he kept on saying that to his team. I don't have any power. I don't have any power. And yet a P three for the French driver. Yeah I mean good on the face of it really good recovery drive, Red Bull played a blinder with the strategy to overhaul a load of cars with the pit stop under the safety car and then red flag allowing you a free pit stop initially. That shot up the order Because up until that point he was probably looking about a seventh place maybe because he was fighting with Russell and he kept Russell behind. Russell couldn't find a way through and the engine issues were plaguing him all throughout the race. as you say, no power. But he is under investigation as we talk right now for safety car infringement, which we believe is to be more than ten car lengths away from the car in front during the safety car period, which George Russell has dobed in for. Now I think he will make the case of Red Bull will make the case that there were clearly power issues that circumnavigate the normal rule being adhered to. But in a way, I think you know I feel like it's a deserved podium in a way because they had a good strategy. He stayed it till the end. and you know if it's the first Red Bll podium for Each Had in Monaco, I think that's a really nice story. Yeah. I forget he was reversed into a wall earlier in the weekend. Yes, there was that. So's amazing recovery in a sense. Yeah, I mean you know after the race he was like, why does it have to be so hard you know complaining about the engine things Well,'s like I'm sorry,'s fororma one., It's meant to be hard.ot It love him on the radio. But a good drive. and as Harry said, what Rebel did with the strategy was they left him out under the first safety car on old tyres, which meant that other people who had penalties to serve dropped behind him. He moved up the field. And so that gained him those positions that we're talking about now I think a good solid podium, a good drive, and it's just what rebel need. for the last few years, we've been talking about second rebel drivers who are not doing the job to back up Max Verstappen when he's not in the picture. E like Kajar has done that today. so he's done himself a lot of good. Yeah, a really nice result from him. and you know you're right. It is a hard business for Mula one It doesn't feel that hard bobbing around in the harbour on a lovely luxury yacht but this is not that. No, I'm finding it relatively easy. So that's your top three. Kimmy Antonlli, your championship leader, Lewis Hamilton and Isaac Hadjer. It was a bit of a race of attrition, I think, you've got to say, and reliability rearing its ugly head, mayaybe we should expect that more given we are essentially at the beginning of a rule and regulation change. But it's something the teams have got to get on top of. We lost I'm going to have to read it now where am I fifteen cars finish the race, I think Yeah. fifteen cars finish. We lost Lando Norris.. We lost Sergio we lost Veltrybot Bos ass Bermman. Berman weroll Stroll into the wall, Charlotte Claire into the wall. Vappen And Versappen and they weren't those wall moments. They weren't just driver error. Th those were, as we've already alluded to, Charlottel brakes It the same with Lance Stroll Well actually, you know, Damon Hill and I had an argument about that on Air. and I think they are driving mistakes because the other drivers didn't make them, right? I mean, Damon was a bit more very hard He was a bit more laaxed with the drivers. Oh, you know, you know, the track was breaking up, but you know the other drivers didn't go in the wall. So I think that is a driver withith stroll, notot with Leclerc, Leclerc is very clear about or at least he's saying from his point of view It was my brakes. It wasn't the track surface.ll was very clear about it being his brakes and engine braaking engine baking stroll.o be fair wet I don't want to digress onruster Martin Timers, but just briefly those drivers stroll and Fernando Oes have been complaining about the bizarre characteristics of that car and corner entry all weekend. so that may well be the case So the drivers who didn't make it to the Checker fllag kind of then explain the rest of the top ten for you. So Oscar Piastri P four, his teammate not finishing the race. Liam Lawson P five, Avid Limblad P six, Pier Gazlly, P seven in the Alpine. Then it was Alex Album P eight, his teammate Col of science. That was the other driver we lost. Yeah Let's go over that list Osar Pastriry actually kind of lucky to be fourth Pier Gazlely crossed the line in third. if he hadn't if he hadn't have gone too quickly in the pit lane, he wouldn't have got a five second penalty applied and he was absolutely fuming about that. And also we've really got to get to the bottom this what on earth was going on in the pit lane today? Yeah The amount of speeding five second penalties that were given was incredulous. I don't think I think it must have been a record. I think we counted six didn't we. I think it's Hamilton Colapinto, Russell Gazly and Piastri who all got penalties for speeding in the pit lan. I don't think there are any others but even so five, that's nearly a quarter of the grid. that's I would say that's unprecedented. somethinghing must have been going on in that pit lane. I don't know what it was. We haven't had a chance to find out yet. I'm sure it will come to light later on But of course, you know, one of the people who did suffer from penalties was George Russell, who had two. and I guess we should probably talk about him Rosanna because his weekend has just been pretty dire from start to finish, hasn't it? And I think, you know, the qualifying pace definitely that's on Russell, but the failing to serve the penalty, that's on Mercedes. you know, he came in for a pit stop If you've got a penalty pending Whether there's a safety car or not, whether you're going to lose a million positions or not, you have to serve the penalty if you make a stop Gazly ended up being penalized because he didn't serve the penalty, but he didn't serve it because he didn't stop And then didn't stop again. Whereas Russell did stop so there was no way he could get away from not taking the penalty and that's why he got the penalty, the drive throughrough penalty afterwards. that's why he's got no points and that's why he'll go home to his flat in Monaco somewhere way around the corner from here tonight, licking his wounds and thinking I've really got to get on top of this because this season is falling apart me at the moment P thirteen for George Russell. reallyally ye a terrible weekend for him. He described the season so far as Torrid, which it really has been a toorrid season. He has so much bad luck
