Big Ben breaks down Steelers free agency moves and more! Ep 123 — Mar 17, 2026 — starts at 0:00
Welcome back to footballing with Ben Rothesberger. Happy St. Patrick's Day. I have my St. Patrick's Day shirt on that only gets worn once a year, probably. Yeah, that's a little last year. Did I wear it last year during St. Patrick's? I have no idea. You've definitely worn that very much. Probably on the show. Um, it's wrinkled because it doesn't get out. So, yes, us us quote unquote stars are just like you. We wear wrinkled shirts as well. Look at you. Um man of the people. I am that's why I do. And then also, we were talking about we should have been sampling Irish beers. That would make sense. But we did that last St. Patrick's Day on the show. So what I decided to do is just enjoy this nice green beer. Look at that. Uh can you see the cup? Can you see what that is on there? What is that? Uh, that's a Miami M. And I'm gonna have that and toast one to the Miami Red Hawk men's and women's basketball team. Come on, both making the tournament. Um, cheers to you guys. Cheers to a great season. Undefeated for the Miami men's basketball team. Um, time to make a run and tell Bruce Pearl: this one's for you. There you go. Nice, nice. Ah, yes. It tastes better, Green ? Maybe. Really taste the green there. Maybe. Yeah. Um yeah, so good luck to Miami. I'll join. Oh yeah, little green water. Look, we're so Irish. You're not Irish at all, are you? Mm-hm m. Not one bit, which why it feels like I'm I don't maybe celebrate this as much as I probably should. I'm just Irish. Yeah, I'm just you know um but yeah, happy St. Patrick's Day, everybody. Happy birthday, Fredo, tight end coach. Um I wish you happy birthday, haven't texted you yet, but I'm saying it here, so this is actually a bigger deal. Oh. Um public. But yeah. So good luck to Miami basketball. Getting excited for that. Um I I do uh want you guys to notice my brand new hat up here. That looks a great. It does. Doesn't it look a little familiar? It does. It does, but it's a little different. Huh. What oh, you know why? That's different. Why is that? It's because right now you can buy that one. Oh ye Yeahah., that's crazy about that. This one. You can buy that one. You can buy this one. You wanna hear you wanna showcase that one too? Look at that. What's that? A little oh that's that camera one you like to wear too. Oh that's when I go hunt I can sit in the deer blind like this.. Look at that So if you want to blend in, bang. And if you want to stand out, there you go. Bang. They both fit real nice. That's the old flex fit. I like that. So yeah, these are the new hats, new logo. I know it looks very similar, but trust me, it's different. Yeah, so they're for sale. Hats are finally for sale. We got uh you guys have been asking for a while. We finally figured it out. We had to get the flex fit. Here's the flex fit, we we've said this a thousand times on the show, I'm sure, when we talk about hats in the live streams, when we're like looking for things to talk about. Yes. The Flex Fit one ten is Ben approved. It's my favorite hat. And so we had to make sure we got the right hat for y'all. Favorite hat. You have long hair, you just loose it stretches. It's just you have short hair, haircut still feels nice. It's good. Um, yeah, so that is now available. Uh we also ordered a few more cookbooks because those were on demand and they're now signed. I signed a few more. So you just told me before I came on here because we don't cover any of this stuff. Um before the show. This is our production meeting. You're watching that they can actually just go and click on and like I'm getting a signed one. It's not there's no mystery anymore. It's like I want a hat, I want a signed cookbook, and there's not very many of the cookbooks. So make sure you grab one. And and this is probably gonna be the last little push that we have of those um for this year. And we're just gonna like let them go. We're not gonna order any more until we maybe do one if we do one a third edition. Yeah. Which we don't. We'll see we'll see. We'll see how hungry we get. Yeah. So as of right now, if you're listening recipe. Exactly. If you are listening to this, the hats, the camo and the black hats are for sale. Cookbooks. This is the final kind of run. We do um the cookbooks annually so that follows the the season that just ended. So the cookbook this is now you're just getting it because you want to either try it or you want the cookbook signed. Yeah. And so there are yeah you can't follow along through the season. You can't. That's why can we do a third? Does Evan have that many in his mind? Oh sure he does. Evan just be making stuff up. I think he just kinda like throws stuff at the wall and see what sticks. I mean, one of the one of the things is a pizza bagel. And makes me think Evan was just looking at two different types of food and thought, I'll put those two together. But he starts copying off people. You know, that's ripping people's is it like he's gonna come down with some like a he's gonna make a peanut butter and jelly and cut the crust off me. Guys, that created this. I'm gonna call it uncrustable. No crustable. Crustable none decrusted a decrust ridiculous um but yeah so the merch is available go get it while it lasts um there is yeah like I said the camel hat the black hat there are cookbooks that you can there's a item on on there on the the merch uh page that you can get a signed copy there's only a hand handful of signed copies so when they gone they gone and there's a couple more I don't even again not a whole lot of unsigned ones if you just want to get it, this is your last chance to kind of get that as well. So if you just if you got the first seas the or volume of it and you want the second volume and haven't got it yet, this is your last chance to do it. As you guys know, we've had a handful of people reach out about the first volume, like he,y can, we get that one too? That one's gone. Uh I think there might be ten in my garage. I might have five. Yeah. So we got fifteen between the two of them. But they're not for sure. Yeah. And so um but that's about that's about it. So this is the last chance, like Ben said, until a next go at it. Uh if the hats go quick, maybe we'll talk to the good people over at clockwise that handle our merchandise. Um, see if we can't re-up on that too. So uh yeah, you asked, you shall receive. There they are. The official football in half. The logo is nice and and readable. Yeah, legible. Legible, see? Yeah. That's why I need the mind over here. Teamwork. Uh but it's nice. So uh I also before I um forget, I'd like to just give a quick little Irish toast to our good friend and friend of the show, Justin Bryan. Yes. The non-black and tanner, the um can't do an Irish Irish carbom, doesn't drink green beer. Can't river dance. Can't do anything, but he's Irish. That'd be St. Patrick's Day, Just in. We we know you celebrate privately. Yes, for sure. That's um Yeah, so anyway, okay, sorry guys. That was it. We're gonna get a text. How how we're six minutes into this? We're gonna get a text at 610 tonight. And uh like thanks guys. Yeah, although I appreciate you guys to talk about me again. Yeah. But the real reason we're doing another show, we took a like off season, we do shows not every week, right? Because uh turns out people aren't playing football right now. There's a lot of other sports happening. Uh the world baseball classic is going on. Watch that. I don't know if you tune into that. Nope. Turn uh I found out uh that's not the Olympics. That's just a different thing that's happening. Yeah. Because it coincided with and I'm not tapped into a whole bunch of you know other sports other than uh football. And so it happened at the same time as the winter Olympics. And so I'm like, oh, is that kind of baseball and baseball in the snow though? Baseball in the winter Olympics. I'm not cool. On ice. That would have been hilarious. Baseball on ice. What seen them like running? They would have been like the cartoon with the running in place. No, who's the guy that did the flips? He'd be a great center fielder for the baseball on ice. The original flip guy? No, the guy, the the finish skater in Quad God. Quad God. I don't know his name. Yeah. Um, I would just love to see guys like slide. If you slide to second base, but you slide a long way and you're just like sliding. If you could let's do this written this brand new segment brought to you by uh St. Paddy's Day. If you could combine combine two different sports that you'd want to see play to gether. Like we just have figure skating and basically. Anything on ice would be amazing. Because like my mom, my mom and I I I've fallen into the trap of this to o. One of the more funny things to like see on like America's Funny Some videos, can we say that? I think we can say that, whatever. Um still around blooper shows, things like that are slip and falls. Yeah, that is funny. It's awful because like you can get hurt. Yeah. But when people go, especially when it's like the s like when they're they're w they're doing like they're trying to save it. Like there's nothing my and my mom will start like getting to the point where she's like, you know, you start like decide like you can't watch and you're crying and you're just like and then and then there's another like you're so you're like dying and they go to the next one and you can't handle it and you're just like I'm out. I'm out. Um so anything on ice can be amazing. So um but but I think it it have to be something where uh you know, like like where' where you people arent getting hurt. Like they they still have the ability. Like I don't want to see baseball with skates because that you want to see him in cleats still. I want to see him with just tennis shoes. Maybe a little maybe a little spike. I thought about the card, not on sk skatesates. No, no, no, no. I want to see it just flat out. I want to see the like I can't get to the ball type thing. But not with a baseball. Maybe it's a wiffle ball. So it's a little bit slower. I don't know. I just um I wanna see I wanna see soccer on ice but in ice sk ates. Just soccer on just hope you don't slice the ball. Yeah, well you get you know you'll figure that out. Yeah, we'll get some engineers, get the get get the top talent to s to sort that one out. Um at uh who makes a spaulding. Who makes the soccer balls? Oh who makes the spawns. What about what the big slalom, the big jump? Yeah, yeah. Okay. What's that called? The is that's not the giant slalom? No, the um big the big old jump. The big hill. The big jump. The big old jump. In a in a inner tube. Oh yeah, dude. But you land on the blob in a something like something's got to happen. So you don't hurt yourself. But but you know, or the giant slalom in a tube, or or they do the um the loot, like the luge and the bobsled team the bobsled in the two in an inner tube or like multiple guys on the you know like when you go to a water park and they have the the double tube that you ride down yeah yeah yeah like get like a three person tube for the bobsled course yes and you gotta do it in in your bathing suit though. You gotta do it in board shorts so you get the freeze or maybe that big swan, the bet the the pool swan that they sell at Costco. That you have to do it in that thing. But they're okay because it's not far. Right, right, yeah, yeah. How fast do you think you can go in one of those things? Not fast, but you but that's the key. What kind of what kind of crisco Crisco oil what are you using? What are you using to to make your tube Okay go? Yeah, nothing's off limits. Whatever. Tell us everybody what two sports sports would you like or what you know or how could you how could you dress up the winner? Because I'll be honest, and I and listen, tipping the cap to all of our of the of not just the US, but all athletes in the winter Olympics. Yeah. It is spectacular. They're they're the best of the best. I am taking nothing away. But I will say personally that the the the summer Olympics feels a lot different than the winter Olympics. Like I'm when the Summer Olympics are on, I'm tuning in like a lot. Yeah. Like I'm I love, you know, track and field, you're watching even biking, like um there's just a lot. Like I really enjoy the summer. Winter's cool. I did watch the hockey. Um, you know, I did, you know, if it's on and I'm kind of like, okay, like I'll let me see what sport. But I there's some of the stuff, like the gymnastics in the summer spectacular. Like just there's some really cool stuff. And the winter just doesn't quite do it for me personally. I know a lot of people or the like they love the winter Olympics. It's not the same for me personally. Sure. But like with all due respect for all them. So I I'm I'm a little bit more of a summer or regular olympics i guess summer it's not called regular olympics they're regular sorry the summer olympic i'm a little more of a summer olympics person yeah i'm a i'm i'm part of the regular olympics i i could do the regular olympics if it's just the olympics with regular people. They should have a regular Olympics. A Joe's Olympics. Yeah, to where it's like, hey, it's still the the luge or how do you pick who gets to do it? Just who the most normal guy. The most normal guy. Get Dave and freaking Gary over here, and you guys gotta go head to head, no training whatsoever. And just or I wanna see Olympic athletes do like the most un Olympic thing ever to where you get I want to see um like Lewis Hamilton. That's the F one guy play cornhole. Just does it translate? You know what I mean? Does it translate? Anyway, we are off the reservations here, folks. St. Patrick's Day. What do you expect? Supposed to be a unique day. Yeah, the reason why we do the show this week is because there's a lot happening in free agency, which we'll get to. The free agency. I also think side note to to bookend this this I th this crazy sports thing, I think there should be more fighting like hockey allowed in other sports. Like I think UFC on ice with no spikes. Oh yeah. Or skateboarding, blindfolded. Oh. Just good luck out there, but luck, Tony. Um Yeah, you have yeah. What you know what I mean? Like I just like, hey, get get it out just unique unique stuff. Just get it out like speaking of that. This is again we we gotta we're we're we're gonna we're going far. We're only thirteen because we haven't talked much recently. You know they're doing obviously the the um UFC at the White House. Yes.. Sounds cool Whatever. But did you see the other fight that they're doing? No. The other one with like Rhonda Rousey and Gina Serrana Carana, if I ever say her name from Mandalorian. You know, she did the Mandalorian, she was the original gladiator. Okay. Oh really? They're fighting. Um the UFC's putting this on? No. This is like I think it's maybe Jake Paul. MVP. Is that Jake Paul? Oh yeah, Jake Paul's um uh Francis Nganu is fighting your boy Nate Diaz is fighting. Who's he fighting? I forget. It's all on the thing. But I'm just saying that one is going to be way more it's May 16th. So we're going to watch that one. Oh, for sure. But anyway, I know that was totally off the rest. But wait till you see the card for the MVP compared to the to the other one. It's going to be spectacular. You think it's a better card than the White House fight? Really? I mean, I'm tuning in to watch um Ronda Rousey come back. It's yeah, she was putting UFC on blast for a while. I thought it's it's MMA. I think it's MVP, the MVP. Yeah, but it's M it's all MMA. Yeah. Okay, let me. Yeah, I think it's the yeah, but it's Francis Nganu. I know Diaz is coming back. Nate Diaz is back on I'm just telling you. I don't even know who's on the White House card. But like there's this big to-do this week about or last week about John Jones not making it, whatever. Yeah. Yeah, this is crazy. Oh, oh, oh. Nate Diaz is fine. Mike Perry? Okay. Bare knuckle. Um it's all bare knuckle? No, Mike Perry's from bare knuckle. Oh, so wait, bare knuckle on? But Diaz would be just fine. He'd be fine. He's normal. He doesn't even like wearing gloves anyway. He's probably bummed out he has to wear gloves., dude Yeah, this hey man, listen. I I know Jake Paul gets a lot of flack because of the boxing and how he entered and all that stuff. I think he's grown as a fighter. Again, maybe not my cup of tea, but like at the same time, like what do I know? Um, but what I Jake Paul, the one that does WWE, or is that Logan? That's Logan. Which I will say this as somebody who grew up in the attitude era, which I would argue is the greatest era of wrestling. I've fallen out of it since, but I went to one of the SmackDown Raw when they were in Pittsburgh last phenomenal. I mean, those or just the the uh the just what they got going on, like it's I I've just been away from it, yeah, you know, but for a minute, but it was I seeing that in person, I'm like, these athletes are insane. My point in saying all that stuff is I think Logan Paul works great in the WWE. Did you see the thing? See, I haven't watched WE. Um, did you see the thing where Logan Paul has like offered a million, wasn't like a million dollars to fight anybody. Yeah, dude, how do you think wouldn't let him out supposedly? Um and I know there was this big like to do about Le'Veon Bell like called him out. And I don't know Logan. I don't uh he's a big guy, isn't it? I'm taking I'm taking Le'Ve on. If they were to if they were to do it. Well you know, you know what I mean. I'm taking L Bell. Okay. Well luckily you won't have to see that fight, right? Because it's what's the size difference? How big is L Leon? I don't know well Levian was I think I think he's probably thinned up a little bit, but he's he's an athlete. Yeah, he was always solid . He was always solid. Yeah. Um but anyway, yeah, we are way off the reservation. Yeah, that's um that's what I'd take but they should what they should do is do two million to put A B in there against him. Cause I know he's gonna be a lot smaller. Yeah, but A B can fight. Oh, that's what I'm saying. A B's gonna I be I would take A B over Logan Paul. So again, don't know Logan Paul at all. Yeah, yeah. No offense. I'm not trying to talk like talk trash. Because I heard that wasn't Logan or one of them in um Tom Brady were talking trash recently. Yeah. I don't know if it's just like they're building up like this. I think it's a hundred percent building. Like Logan Paul's a genius marketer. Yeah. You know what I mean? And I think this whole thing is part, I think they're doing something and I think it's part of the build up to that which great man it's working. Yeah you know what I mean? And so but uh I saw A B hit someone twice in like the blink of an eye. Like like wait like wait like what just happened? Yeah, you're like he he hit he hit him twice, I think. Yeah, it was crazy. But yeah, I'm saying he would it would be yeah. That's uh that's not a uh all right, free agency. Brother, this is what happens when we go weeks without doing the welcome to footballing. I'm Ben Rothesburger. Happy St. Patrick's Day. Yeah, my you're right. This card is awesome. And again, again, the book into that, I don't know much about the Paul Bros, but I will say Jake has has been putting on a show at the very least. And um uh kudos for getting in the ring with uh was Anthony Joshua. You see that Jake fought him. Yeah. Listen, you gotta be, you gotta care about this thing until you see step in the ring with him. So kudos to you guys, man. Uh that being said, let's talk about a sport uh that you play ed. Because uh you didn't you're you put your box you put your boxing career on hold, didn't you? You know, to play football, right? Yeah. Um yeah, man, I'll say this outside looking in. The Steelers in free agency, um dude, we might have had the best run. Yeah, I think we might have had the best run in the this they're making moves now. Uh obviously lost, and again, I I I wasn't following as closely probably as I should have. Um, or a lot of people do, but we we obviously lost a few people that were, you know, maybe important cogs in in the wheel. Uh Kenny G, Isa ac, um, obviously on special teams, Miles Killebrew. Um, there's probably others I'm missing off the top of my head. Uh Calvin Austin, you know, there's some people that that played a part that aren't aren't gonna be here, which are you know, they they might be f elt. John W. Yeah, John Well which obviously some people would be like, well who cares 'cause he didn't think, but I still think he's he's a very good talent. Yeah. Um , but the additions that they made are are there's some some really interesting additions. And when I say interesting, I mean like good interesting like yeah yeah um and so and i to me it starts with with the wide receiver Michael Pitt man uh I don't know when I saw that I'm like is this real? Yeah how did Indy let him go? And so I thought I to me that is gigantic. Because I think now you've just you DK him, and obviously you still have Roman Wilson. I we on this show, I believe that he's a really good talent. So when they need to infuse more in there, I still think there's an opportunity to go get a guy now in the draft somewhere. Yeah. You've got picks now. You we talked about draft capital and being able to use that draft capital to make these moves, but man, that's a that's a big one. Aaron's that I know Aaron's gotta be happy. Yeah, so and that's under the assumption that Aaron's gonna be the one throwing the ball. Like what are we doing? Well, he managed to be able toere's no way he's not coming back. Not here living. No way. Brother, he out here. You think that's a shoe-in? You think it's like I and I I have yes, I do. I don't I don't see how he doesn't. Is Pittman in California right now throwing with him, you think? Probably. You know, I mean Aaron, just let us know, man. You you know you could do that. You can just say, hey, I'm coming back. I mean, yeah, it's you know, give him time. I mean, so the trade I thought what was this is what was crazy to me, not only that we got Michael Pitt Pittman, because I think he's a stud, uh, and his dad played for the Bucks, didn't he? Yes.. Yeah, yeah Oh, I think so. Yeah, yeah. I think I that's how I got introduced to him when he came in the league. Um But it was I'm reading here Michael Pittman to the Steelers along with a seventh round pick in exchange for a sixth round p ick. So it must have been the con like we we must be taking off part of his contract. So they're they're losing the contract or whatever. But yeah, it doesn't seem like there's seems like a very good trade-off for us. Yeah, man. It's it's it's you can take that seventh and deal that later on. You could, you know, that you just got from then you take it that seventh and package it with a a third and now go get an extra second round or something. You know what I'm saying? There's things you can do with that. This and so do you looking at this um in light of last season, obviously we on this show were chirping with along with a lot of people about like, hey man, we need another, we need another wide receiver. We need the like it's yeah, everybody. I mean it was it was is is plain as I mean it couldn't be more obvious. Yeah, is is uh would you say that this is the best wide receiver duo we've seen since what maybe A B and Juju ? Or since we're not putting, I mean, listen, those guys were I mean maybe not equal to them, but like that. Yeah, but like in terms of just like, yeah, this this is this is this has the potential now. Yeah, and then you got Pat work in the middle. Um again, I'd still like them, I think they're going to add someone else, especially because you talk about West Coast systems. You've heard Charlie talk about West Coast. He's Charlie Batch has played in the West Coast system. You've got to have multiple guys. You've got to have um , you know, three, four, five wide receiver sets. And so what you're doing is you're not just pulling a special teamer off the shelf that can play wide receiver as your fourth or fifth wide receiver. You're actually you actually have legit wide receivers out there playing. And I think that's gonna be uh I I just think it's gonna be huge for the Steelers. Yeah. Who do you think um and again, this is we've not even seen a snap of football with DK and Michael Pittman, but based upon what uh my expectation of what that's gonna look like and assuming that Aaron is the one that's gonna be throwing them the ball, who do you think becomes wide receiver one in like clutch situations? Well I, I I think think the great thing about having multiple guys is you don't have to force it to one guy. You don't have to be like, okay, it's fourth down. I'm forcing the ball to this guy. You can say, okay, that guy's getting doubled, my DK is getting doubled, or the safety is over top. I have no fear in going to Pittman. I have no fear in going to Pat. I have no fear in going to the other person. So the more options that you give a quarterback, especially someone as great as Aaron, the the more options you give, the more he's going to be able to do things with it on certain situations and not have to be like, well, I gotta find this guy. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. So it just it just creates more comfort for everybody. Yeah. And if Pittman said this, I think it was in his initial interview. I just I saw a clip of it. Um I haven't had time to watch the whole thing, but he's talking about the style of football here in Pittsburgh, just kind of fit his style. I one thing I've always liked about him watching him over in India is that he seems like a physical body over there. Do you think without obviously knowing the nuances of every single team's wide receiver room, but could this be the most physical wide receiver duo we have in the league? Well, I mean, you you've got the I'll say this: there's a difference betwe en being physical and being a physical wide receiver. Okay, here's I say like DK, there there's probably not a more physically looking wide receiver. I mean, his size, his strength, I mean, he's an avatar. I mean, he looks ridiculous out there . But it doesn't always translate to being physical on the field. Because I would argue that one of the most physical wide receivers in the game is Amon Ra St. Brown. Sure. And he's not a big dude, but he but he will stick, he is Heinz Ward. We talk about all the time. There's your comp. He throws his his face in the fire to block, to do the dirty stuff, this that and the other. That's being physical. You know what I'm saying? And then then, you know, being a big physical target by catching the 50-50 balls, that's a way to be, you know, there's multiple ways of being physical. In terms of just sheer size and physicality, physical like size, man, we're gonna have some big boys in there. You know? Yeah, man. I mean when you got DK, you're gonna automatically probably be close to the top anyway. Yeah, I'm excited to see what we do with this um with this draft because I think um the way we were seeing the O line play later in the season . I think the man this offense could be a little bit of Yeah, I think I think I think what what's the interesting thing, so if we to again as you have the list there and I don't if I mess anything up, I think adding Pittman's huge. Okay. So now you've got you've got your two tight ends, or you've got your two tight ends in in Fryermouth and in Mount Washington. You've got DK and Pittman. And then obviously we we talk about Roman and then the potential of other wide receivers that we can throw in there. Losing Kenny G, big deal. Went to the Bucks two years, 14. Uh maybe we could have done something. Maybe he wanted to go. It seems like you told me in his somewhere he said Tampa's where I wanted to go anyway. Um, so it seems like you know that was going to go. I thought he would have been a great fit for um McCarthy's offense. Maybe maybe McCarthy wants to kind of bring his own guys in here. I uh you know, we don't really know. Uh obviously they signed the running back from uh Rico, I think. Yeah, Rico Dow Carolina. From Carolina, big physical back. Not necessarily a guy you would uh uh expect to see in a West Coast style catch the ball a lot, but maybe it's uh a good compliment to Warren. Uh, you know, your big physical back that can spell him, that can be good in pass protections. We'll be interesting to see what happens there. Um, but I think you know, losing Isaac, you know, an interior alignment, I think was a big deal. What I think it says to me now in the draft is getting Pittman, I think, takes receiver off the board at number one. You don't need to do that. Okay. I would not mess with a quarterback. Even if Aaron says he's not coming back, I would not mess with quarterback. I would stay away from now, stay away from running back. It j and and and um here's what I'll say. I would I would do what I originally said and get a lineman, get an interior. Now you sp now you really need one with Isaac leaving. Yeah. Like always, always, always bolster your line. I would get the best interior lineman or or lineman period, because maybe there's a tackle out there that you got to fill a spot if the rumors are true that that um Broderick's injury may be a little more severe than than initially th ought. Uh I I would that's where I would stick. I would I'm I'm sticking with my guns. I'm going line with my with my first pick because the other position that we had talked about on this um show and and people were talking about obviously safety, D B, uh maybe a linebacker, some D lineman. Well, look what we've done in the draft. We went or in the um free agency. We went and got uh Dean from Tampa at cor ner. I think great. Great. Yeah, yeah. I believe we re-signed Asante Samuel Jr. Yep. Right? Yep. Great. Um so now you don't have the draft corner in the first round. That's off the board. You went and got a defensive, the defensive lineman from Tennessee, who's a young, uh a younger guy, I think. A pretty good little player. Well, there's that's helping to fill the age that's that's going at D-line here. Yep. And and to go in with Harman and and bolster the run stopping. So I I just don't see how you go anywhere outside of line unless there's like we talk about how remember last week we or last show we talked about how you have your draft board right and you say okay we've got our top of every position and then you do your your draft what we need and then there's just the best available. So unless at for some reason at 21, there's like this: okay, we can't not take this outside linebacker, this edge rusher, this what is it? Like he's just too high on the on the board to not take him. Then I think you have to go line. Personally. That's what I would do if I was GM. Yeah, I I mean a lot of the the mock drafts I'm seeing um have the the Steelers picking that guard from Penn State. Um which I think would if he's there, that would be great. But uh to your point, I think that you've made a couple of times with the secondary, we've also picked up two safeties, right? There you go. Brisker from uh Chicago. Oh, yeah. I forgot about it. And Darnell Savage. So it's like you're getting depth there. And if Jalen Ramsey's still with us, you got the Deshaun Elliott. Yep, you've got a secondary. I wouldn't, yeah. The the interesting interesting thing would be okay, they're gonna try and is there any dealing that could happen trading guys to move up, you know, with certain people. But obviously I wouldn't mess with Ramsey, but yeah, so your secondary feels really fit, you know. Well, and two, and I think this is one that kind of went under the radar, but I think is a huge deal, especially because this will be the second year back from him after injury is Cole Holcomb. Mm-hmm. We got Cole Holcomb back. And when he first got here, he was lethal. Obviously had the unfortunate injury. Came back, played well last year, but I think this year, I mean you might you might see remnants of that first. And you've got Wils Peyton Wilson who who has yeah you've seen you'll see a lot of growth with, who's kind of your can run and chase and and make plays. So man, this this team's really setting up. I mean it's it's it's transition a little bit away from I don't want to say away from Tumps, but like like what what's going on with you know kind of moving away with this, moving away from some of these guys and and and really just going at it in free agency. I think they've done a lot in free agency. Which I think for fans, man, like I'll speak for myself, it's cool to see that 'cause I don't remember a time. Like I guess last year was probably a big one when we got a lot of big signings, but it kind of felt like this just feels different new. You know, obviously um Cameron Johnson is back. We got the our punter back. Yeah. But uh I feel like he's he's you know in and out a bunch, but it's cool, like phenomenal player. I think it's you know he stays healthy, that's a great addition as well. Um , you were talking about um Rico in McCarthy's system, they play together in Dallas. And so that that I guess good, and I think too, if you know, with the addition of um pitman if i'm if i'm thinking about how uh um how often i would say that uh canny g was used in the passing game. You might not need that out of your running back this year, right? Because your your your receivers are you're you're stacking that a little bit. I wouldn't be surprised if there's probably still some level of addition there. Well it'll be interesting to see too if is there a receiver out there that was in McCarthy's system somewhere that you can bring in, that knows the system, that you can plug and play, um, whether he's a free agent, whether he's just, you know, on a team, like is there someone else out there that that you can put in the system? Maybe that's you know I'd love to go back and I'd have to I'd love to dig into like is there is there a Green Bay packer or receiver that that um Aaron knows that McCarthy knows it, knows the system, maybe someone in Dallas. I don't know. But yeah, right now the way things are form forming up, I I think that line has got to be a spot that you really emphasize in the draft to make sure that that is secure. U h you know, maybe there's a late running back that you could grab . Uh you know, did they did they re-sign um Connor Hayward? No, he went to uh Las Vegas. Okay, so he's out. So maybe there's another maybe there's room for another tight end at some point. Probably. You know, you gotta have a third guy. Yeah. I don't know if McCarthy loves the fullback, if he's a fullback kind of guy, but if you got this this Rico that's a big bruising back, you may not need a fullback type thing. So yeah, I think it's tight end. I think it's still a potential. I think receiver's potential still at some point. But I don't I don't see how you do anything else besides line in the first round. Again, unless there's just a we can't pass Yeah. And it seems as if like the moves that they've made so far is structuring the organization to do that in the draft. Seems like it. And honestly, man, like it's it's I don't know if it's like a mind meld or whatever, but it seems as if they're structuring the organization and the team um in the way that you've kind of been, you know, banging the drum here on this show was like, hey, build the team and let a quarterback get in where he fits in, man. And if you land on a freak talent or you get a Hall of Famer back, then dude, I mean, this is something I I've had conversations about before. It's like I think Aaron single handling got him six games last year. You know, his presence there, his, you know, decision making, I think. Um, so if he comes back, just count at six, you know, from what you're building on and then move forward. And so even if he doesn't, so you have Will there, I think this is a very it's becoming a very safe offense to let that kid figure it out. Yeah. For sure. No, and I would keep building, I would just keep building it. Keep building it for um you know, build it for the future right now. Even though, even if Aaron comes back, still build for the future. You have to, right? And um, because Aaron's not gonna play for more than another year, I wouldn't think. Um what did we um what happened with Herb ig? I think he's still there. Is he still available? I thought he was a free, I thought he was uh potentially available. Maybe not. All right, let me check. Um, because I would say this: with Sawyer, Watt, Highsmith, and Herbick, you've got four of the best, like that outside linebacker group is I mean it's really good. Yeah this is his last of his rookie. So he's free so he so so he still has one more yeah last year was this or he's going to okay so they're not um putting the I got o kay. You know, maybe there's maybe there's something there at some point where it's like, okay, we've got four studs. How much longer is TJ gonna play? Obviously as you get older, you I know we just did a deal with him and stuff, but you get a little bit older, injuries start to take effect. You also want to get a young guy in to learn Yeah behind him. So maybe there's a maybe that's a second or third round possibility, an outside guy that we we got to see. Jack Sawyer, who we really like and think is a great addition to this team. He's gonna grow. He is going to benefit from playing with Herbig, Watt, and High Smith. Yeah. So why not get another guy that comes in at some point that can learn and they just kind of come up together? That way you have because the high smith watt connection is ridiculous. That's I dude It's ridiculous. That's the greatest edge duo in the league. It's it's really, really good. Yeah. And so why not try and get that the next high smith Watt connection with Sawyer and whether it's Herbie, you decide to deal with him or it maybe it's Sawyer and the next guy and it's you know, four or five years from now when T J's probably not playing and I'm I'm assume T J's not gonna play for another five years. Like I could be wrong who knows what what we want to do. I know they could JJ could come back to the case might come behind the scene by the back. I know Derek is the best athlete in the family. But um so it's you know it just it there could be something there, you know, if you if you want to build on it. Um and you could still go corner. I think they're gonna have some questions moving forward on what they're gonna do with JPJ. Right. When he's done this rookie deal, he's played really well. He's probably gonna um not require, he's going to There's a contract there. There's gonna be money that's gonna have to be thrown. Yeah, he's the way he's playing. Either the Steelers are gonna have to be like, yes, we're gonna pay top dollar, or we're gonna move on. Yeah. And so, you know, are they gonna build at that position? Obviously they brought two the Asante's not go maybe not a long term, maybe is it's Dean, it's draft a guy in there so that with the the potential of losing JPJ, we can just go to the next guy. Plug and play, yeah. If if not, then we're gonna have to, you know, sign to a big contract. Yeah. But I think they they have obviously I think probably another year to figure that out. Yeah and I don't think that I mean depending on what that contract is, like I don't I that doesn't seem like a loss to me me. Ian again, th this past season, I think the performance is probably, you know, gonna demand that. Um and I it this is just my ignorance. I don't know how how often shut down real lockdown corners come up. Yeah, does they'll come over. So if you got one in house, you know. It depends on what kind of system um you know the new defense corner wants to what's he want to run. Is is it zone, is it man? Because, you know if you want to have a lockdown man guy that you can just say okay you go shut him down and then we'll you know everyone else is gonna do over here or we're gonna let you travel with guys um then that's different if this is a if this is a defensive system which I don't know is gonna be a lot about zone defenses and you know, stop is are we are we trying to stop the run? Are we trying to stop the big play? Because some defenses, their philosophy is do not give up the big play. You can pick us apart for five, six, seven, eight yards. Now, because what they the reason they do that, people be like, well, if you go five, six, seven yards, you can just matriculate the ball down the field. Well, the problem is what a lot of defensive coordinators that have that system in where it's just don't will bend but don't break. Yeah. Is they don't trust that a the opposite coordinator and the opposite quarterback can be patient long enough. It's like I can't, this five yards is getting like it's great, but at some point we got to start taking shots. And that's when the the turnovers and things happen. So uh, you know, maybe this is a defense that it's gonna be a bend, don't break. Is this one we're gonna try and blitz and go crazy and make you loot try and lose five yards every time? Like until we know exactly what the defensive scheme is, um, it'll be hard to know exactly what they're trying to do in the in the defensive side of the ball. Yeah, because I mean, obviously, new coordinators, but it seems as if like McCarthy, having you know born or raised here, has so much of that Pittsburgh Steeler DNA in them, is it like hey,, we need to I'm gonna sit down with a DC and like we need to get back to this violent maybe defense, or is it like, hey, the games change, like let's get creative and that's that's the mystery of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Is this is crazy. I'd be curious of the Steelers fans, man. Is this the first year in a long time like you don't know what the team's going to look like? I'd think so. Well, one, we don't know who the quarterback is. I mean, I think we're going to figure out. But that's not important important.. Probably not Um, yeah, no, that there is going to be a there is definitely a a a shroud of mystery around this team right now, right? Like what's the offense gonna look like? You can go back and look at McCarthy's offenses and kind of may be understand, okay, it's gonna be a West Coast, we're gonna do this, that, and the other. But Pittsburgh is known to run the ball a lot too. So is he going to wanna, you know, are they is he gonna feel pressure from the top about being able to be a physical run the ball type team. Yeah. What's the defense gonna look like? You know, we knew for a long time with Coach Leboe, it was B2 slide, it was all kinds like it was like we're bringing pressure. Um, it felt like you know, it just you you lost a little boat, but obviously when you lose someone in the hall of fame like her him, it's gonna be different. But um what's it gonna look like going into the season? And and you're right, we're Danny Smith's not there anymore, uh, who's taking all our players down to Tampa. Uh Danny, I'm turning you up for tampering. So yeah, the the the the unknown because he's in Tampa. He's Tampa very sorry. I didn't say that. Good for you. Good for you. You read my notes, so I didn't. We got great writers on the show, guys. Uh so anyway, we'll um we'll see what happens this year. I think we're all a little excited to see. I think we're excited for just over a month for the draft. Yeah, I think. I think it'll be my free agency is going to start slowing down. There may be some couple of things trickling here and there, but really it's going to be o kay. We'll we'll know when we see what happens in the draft. I think we'll know pretty early, the first three rounds. We'll be like, ah, I see what they're trying to do. Okay. Are they going to go if they just start going defense? You're going to be like, okay, they're getting a little bit of pressure trying to figure out what they're doing there. If they go offense and line and this, that, and the other, then they're trying to build a team around a future quarterback. So I don't know. I'm at you so you feel like there there still might be some pressure to be the historic DNA of the Pittsburgh Steelers, or does you know this opportunity with Coach T stepping down prov present itself as like, hey, take this and redefine it. Don't lose, don't lose the blood in the veins. But like, hey man, you can you can restructure this to to win in 2016 and or two thousand sixteen, two thousand twenty-six and and beyond. Well I think the question would be for fans for the Rooney famil y would be this. You know, we asked the question last year. Would you, you know, do you not tank, but if you lose, are you okay? Are you okay to lose in order to get a high draft pick to get a quarterback or get someone that you want? The next question I would ask that would be a a question that I know Steeler fans would probably blurt out their answer to. But I'd be like, no, just I want you to really think about this. And and I would ask I wouldn't I don't mean to be disrespectful to the Rooney family because whatever they want to do. But this is a question that I think they would, if I was them, I'd want to ask. Do you stick with tradition? We are a physical, run-the-ball pla,y smash mouth defense, win three-nothing, win six-three, twelve-n ine. Or and and and have a winning season, maybe make a playoffs, maybe win a playoff game, okay? Maybe not. But you're you're you're living in your tradition, you're living in your history. This is who we are. Because I tell, I again, I'm I'm just setting it up. I would tell running backs when they came in from L Bell to Richard to Naj, like, hey, listen, this this city loves its defense, but it loves its running backs, and so you you guys are um like this is what they want. They don't care about a f a a quarterback. They don't care about wide receiver. Like they they want to win, but they want that's that's what that's their their bloodline. So is that what you want? Or are you willing to say, you know what? Our defense is we're always want to be physical, but we also want to try and score 50 points a game. And we're going to throw the ball all over the yard and we're gonna do we're we're we may not run the ball. We'll run the ball 10 times a game, but we're gonna throw it 40. Okay. Like we're we are doing something completely differ ent to try to to go win a Super Bowl. And that's the the best way for us to win a Super Bowl is for us to go score 50 points a game. Who cares how many points the defense gives up? We're gonna put all our eggs in the offensive basket. We're gonna score, score, score, score, score, throwing the ball all over the place, get down first and go on the one or throwing it four straight titles. Okay? Like again, maybe it's ridiculous. But my point, in order to do that, are are are is Steeler are Field fans really are they okay with that? I I think they would say yes, because Super Bowl's the most important thing. Yeah. But are you sure? I I mean, no one can be sure, right? But I do think, you know, as somebody who has has has learned the steeler way. L Iike was not born and wrapped in a terrible towel like many of you listening to this. I didn't have that luxury. I was I'm learning this as an adult. What I will say is though yes the identity that I have encountered in the Pittsburgh Steelers is physical smash mouth football. It is that has been the identity because that's what it took to win. And now we're in a we're in a uh the league has changed to where like you can still be that, and I think in that profession you got a your desire should be a degree of violence anyway but you can win other ways and I think the tradition within Pittsburgh and and the irony is I'm telling you this is winning. Yeah, right. I know I think that too. And I think I feel like muc the fact that to Charlie's uh breakdown when he was here on the show, if you haven't seen that, you can go check it out in the channel, is talking about the West Coast system. I think pouring any degree of resources behind that might showcase that's like, yeah, sling that thing, bro. Yeah. I know. Well, I'll say this too, though. Like where my question or argument would be is like, yes, I think Steeler fans are okay with like, yeah, there were games when I was playing that's like, okay, we're gonna have to go throw the ball 40 times and we're gonna have to score a lot of points. But that wasn't the norm. Sure, sure. It was the the okay, the exception, we're gonna have to do this. Like when we were when we were the killer bees and we were out there doing it, we were the top five offense for like three, four, five years. Yeah, we were throwing the ball a lot. Now we had L Bell who would run and do some great things. But we were we were a we were a system that was was doing a a lot of sorry. Was doing a lot of like um throwing it and doing the that kind of thing. I think they were they were okay with it, but they were still clamoring for a fullback. Sure. Mr. Rooney still wanted to run the ball. But that's I mean, but again, it's the the time distance, right? So that's like you were closer to the the the foundational days of Steeler football. Yeah. Now we've had we've had some time, man. You play for 18 years, bro. I hear you. And it's and I think the league has morphed into something to where it's like, I don't think you obviously you don't abandon it, but when we use it, it's gonna be lethal. Our defense is gonna be violent. Our run game is gonna be like it's gonna be a problem when it shows up, but like I d I don't know. I'm asking a question too. But I but I I think that Steelers fans I I feel like we would be okay just slinging that thing uh for the you know, for the sake of the W, for the sake of playoff games at home, for the sake of adding to that that trophy room. Yeah. You know what I mean? No, I hear you. I think it show I think it I I just think Mike McCarthy's system probably shows that's maybe a lean toward that. And obviously, you'd want to go get a Hall of Fame quarterback if you have an opportunity to do it. But I mean, Aaron Rodgers isn't a Hall of Fame quarterback because he hands the ball off well. I know. You know what I mean? So I know I'd be curious. I'm curious too. We'll see. Like I said, we got a month to figure it out in the draft and then we'll go from there. Yeah. Um how's your your arms probably pretty are still really good. My left shoulder's a little sore though. I'll just play hockey with the kids in the playroom. That's couldn't be awful. That is the least important shoulder. Well, Spence, when your beer's gone, ye ah. Make it rhyme. Try to make it rhyme. There's only two things to do.
