Michelle Obama Defends Love Island as High Art | Digging DeeperJun 22, 2026 — starts at 0:00

Welcome to Game of Roses. This is Pacecase. This is Bachelor Clues. Today is, well, it's Friday for us, but it's gonna be Monday when this comes out. this is digging deeper. We have thirteen luscious clips to get through with you a lot of them Cing from those. Oh God the tone I love that something makes you so happy, you know What I just love watching the guy In any capacity that because it's either going to be mind blowing gameplay from season twenty one of the Bachelor or seeason ten or eleven of Bachelor E or seeason three of Bachelor of Paradise or it's going to be buy out files which which ain't is good, but in a fun way to me. We have free hooks from IMo That's Michelle Obama's podcast where they're talking about reality TV as highbrow media. We got eight clips from those vial files, which include the interview with Bea after she got removed from the season of Lve Isiolland Well as some behind the scenes love Island stuff, we have one clip from Page six Radio interviewing none other than What was his name? Captain Fancy Pants? No Officer sexy pants. Swn And we have one interview with Caitlyin Bristow talking about TFP from peopleople. So all that is coming to you. Be we get into it, however, we are going spend a few minutes talking about something that Lizzie and I were just talking about before we started recording The podcast we doing before the podcast. G gototta do a practice one. Yeah, this is our rehearsal. In rehearsal, we stumbled upon this beautiful idea you were talking about how in the most recent At least as of this recording, it was last night's episode, but by the time this comes out, it will be two or three episodes D. But we watched the episode, which was episode fourteen, where Soul gets removed and Gabriel gets removed via this America we get to determine who are our favorite couples. and the supposedly, we don't know how actual this is, but supposedly the couples with the lowest vote totals, the three couples get put up there and then the women have to vote a guy out and the guys have to vote a woman out And we were just kind of thinking about how the three couples that are up there include all of the recent bombshells you have the couple of the recently formed couple of Caleb and Soul. so that's two of those three bombshells who came in the last wave. Gabe and D. Gabin Jen has the other Bombs show and then you have Corbin and Kenzie and Corbyin was a bb jll as well. So Is this like I don't know how real the vote is. Let me just say that. But if it is real, A I mean could they decide how many of the bottom there are Sure could be the bottom two couples they have to vote between bottom three. Of course, but There is a power in this vote if it's real that the fourth audience has in Love Island, that it has in no other game Yeah. we could if unionized in a real way completely rewrite this show Can you imagine if the bottom three would have been Casey and Anaya Sincere and Melanie And Kata and Zach I think that would have been a great episode of TV. Correct. And we might be rid of sincere finally Um The idea in my opinion, if we can do this as a fourth audience, would be to unionize And in any instance where they say vote for your favorite, whatever You never vote bombbs shells in the bottom. you always vote bombs shells as your favorite and is would alleviate basically that problem of like well, it's always going to just be the bombshells in the bottom A cell movement. Yeah, basically. always vote for the bombshells as your favorites. I was voter suppressed by I'm not keeping the vote open for very long Me too, my vote was also suppressed. but I'm just saying like Again, I don't know how real that vote is. It may be complete fabrication. I have no idea. It may just be a way for the show to get you to engage a little further and feel like you're a part of it, even though the producers are making these selections. That's totally possible. But if it's not And the fourth audience comes together in a meaningful way Voting for bombshells as your favorites in every vote, the entire show would be drastically different and it would eliminate the idea that if you're an OG, you're basically protected Because they are in these votes. You saw it Audience revolts Perfect match style Bombshells Unite. Yeah, something like that Any who'zle It's u I would love to see it play out As would I. Hopefully it But now speaking of playing out, let's play out some of these clips. You see what I've done there It was a good u transition sentence. Thank you. Our first book comes to us from the Imo podcast. Hosted by none other than the me, Michelle Obama In this clip, Michelle Obama and Jessica Williams are talking about Reity television. Here we go That's what I like about reality shows, like real housewives. You wantan to watch steakakes. Okay, Craig, listen. You want to talk talk to himen are That's right. They're like that weird. like it That is my point to my sister that it is not. TV. It's not reality. No, noody said. Nody's arguing. I'm not saying this is so real and that's why it's like, o my God, it's just it's entertain Itny. I think it's like when Andy Warhol came out with pop culture and people were like, what is this? This is a can of soup. I think it's that I think really amazing things happen in reality TV. and I think It's really important and it shows us something about ourselves as a society. And it should be watched, it should be studied, it should be analyzed. Like real you were breaking down characters, behaviors, things you've seen before. I mean, I think it's also look tease him because what you said about acting, I say all the time about sports. you know. I mean, it's, you know, societally, we have decided what type of entertainment is relevant or good or worthwhile. right? And it's like Reality TV is it's sociology. It's empathy. It's analyzing behavior. I mean, it's like the it's like the imies of Girl, let's break down that conversation. toally. Which way? Ver female. is Michelle Hama in the pit It's absolutely surreal this clip. L I couldn't stop thinking about it all week. We have had that exact same conversation. I don't know how many times on this podcast. Obviously, we agree with everything she said there. Um But the basic idea, like one of the basic ideas in there is that like reality TV is important that it is not this frivolous bullshit, you know, guilty pleasure, brain rot, whatever and largely because of its place in society as either a reflecting mirror of what we are Or as something that is pushing forward what we are defining what we are through what is being made. And now we're at a place where Once again, we have a reality TV show host as the president. I don't think that's a good thing, obviously, but it is what we are as a society. All surface no substance. And I think that that's kind of like to me, that's one of the most interesting things about reality TV. They kind of hit it um, in that in that conversation as well by saying It's not reality. And it's not. And so even in the name of it, even in the name of the genre, there is a lie baked into it that this is real is in fact a type of performance, a type of act. like hyper reality. Yeah. it's like as real as pro wrestling is. O like improv Yeah, to some degree. P wrestling, there are characters that are like you know, crazy fabrications like underndertaker is literally like a zombie cowboy, you know, It's like that's insane. But like Cody Rhodes, that's his real name. He is the son of Dusty Rhodes who was a very famous wrestler in the eighties and his whole persona is like, I'm going make my father proud. It's based on extreme reality You know, That is like who he is as a person and now he's the heavyweight champion and all of this. So there are levels to it in pro wrestling in terms of how much of your persona is based on reality, your actual life, name, etcetera all the way to a crazy weird supernatural character that's like lightning strikes or summoning him into the ring and shit, you know And I don't think we've seen that level yet in in reality television. We will get there. It's starting to get there with traders. like Alan Cumming is a little bit that, you know I mean, when you have Big Brother that's got live feeds, I feel like that is That is another level. It's like Can people act twenty four hours a day for months People can act for ninety years of their entire lives every day. What are you talking about? They're called sociopaths.o, the pathies. Yeah. There was a pathy accusation on Summer House this week. Slime pig sociopath. Lindseay Hubbard, accusing West of being a pathy, a term I had never heard. I never heard that either. Damn, that's hard core. But the bottom line with all of this to me is First of all, thank you Michelle Obama for being in the pit, for clearly recognizing that you for listening And you are the type of fan I've dreamt of my whole life. Yeah. I think you've done so good with everything Me too. and now glad you're podcasting. You're weighing in on reality television and what it means to America or even globally, I suppose, you know, couldouldn't be happier. Butook means a lot to me. It means a lot to me too Because when you have people who are, I mean, she's about as high profile as it gets across everything. One of the most famous people in the world talking about reality television and its importance It feels like You know, when we started this podcast, it we kind of said this type of stuff in the very early days of it, that that was almost like our thesis this should be studied. It's at least equally as important as sports are That's something she goes on to talk about. I don't know if we have that clip, but ye it's one of my favorite parts about this is She's like Men decided the ball sports 're entertainment. That's our next clip. Let's let's check out our next clip. This is Michelle Obama continuing to talk about reality television. Here we go What do we spend money on? What gets the awards someomebody throwing a bowl. It's like okay, you're good at you can jump high, but that's what you that's all you do. tootally. You've feel trained. Yeah. This is what you've done. so you should be good at it Coming for the jumpers And you're tall. Totally. You want genetic or genetics. Right? you fit the bill. You're a gymnast because you're four eleven. So I do think it's very gendered. I make this argument only because So many people make the opposite argument when it's something they don't understand. Totally. You know, That's the only reason I make the argument. It's mainly to men to say, wait, wait, wait a minute, right? Yeah You know, what you like is only, you know credible because men have decided it is. Right That's right. That's why. I agree, you know, I agree not because it is objectively it's it's a skill for sure. It's a really cool skill to. Totally. You know, whatever the sport is. Anybody who becomes a master at something they do It's fascinating to watch. aggree I would argue Nick Bial has become a master at what he does. Fascinating to watch Oh God. All roads lead back. He is my source. soulmates But no, this is what you're talking about. and we've talked about this a lot on Gore two, that it is like a gendered thing that reality and TV gets shit upon while the flip side is like Michelle B was saying, like, oh, you could throw a ball pretty good The term trash TV is still pretty popular. Yeah, or even guilty pleasure. Like their guty pleasure Oh my gos fan is like my guilty pleasure is watching the NFL. And it's because like I mean, maybe some people Yeah, maybe, but I mean, it's There is an apparatus around the ballall sports that exists now with twenty four hour coverage super granular like data. This gambling based on it Well, I mean, that gambling now You can't do reality TV gambling in the same way, except with Love Island because it's not a live event You know what I mean Oh my God, I wonder what Kal she said about the dumpings Oh yeah, I didn't even look at it It's interesting. I don't know. I got to start looking more at polymarket and Calcii if they're doing Lub Island. because basically, if They're doing it in the way that they're doing other stuff. You have to assume people on the crew are betting on it. And so whatever the highest percentage likelihood is, if it's right every time Now you're looking at someomebody on that crew is definitely do it, and you'll basically be getting information like a day early if those markets are accurate. I'll look into that today. Oh Jeez. I'm curious Cues just runs. Yeah. I've got to go a million dollars on Caleb U yeah, I love I just love these clips by Michelle Obama. I'm like too It's a lot of different ideas tied into one. you can tell she's a real reality TV fan because she like knows her shit Um All right. The gendered thing, I feel like is not. spoken about very much No, one hundred percent P And it always is, I feel like, all reality TV really is relegated to this kind of box of like, it is bullshit and meaningless Meanwhile, it's making, as a genre, billions of dollars for giant corporate greed machines much in the same way that any I mean, I guess they don't make as much money as like the NFL or Major League baseball or the NBA yet no single B property does, you know, But like Love Island is getting there. Can you imagine if they were doing like three seasons of Love Island a year That is what I want I want them to go to two. Like I have not watched Love Island Games or beyond the villa. I would love to watch a winter Love Island. Yeah. And I mean even though I don't need that in my life. Yeah. I wouldn't mind schedule is pretty H what they need. If they really want to get it to a level that's like the NFL in terms of viewership and stuff They also need some kind of off season thing to be following And this is my pitch to love Island U you have a some kind of online portal, something where you're basically tracking perspective players. You're looking at their Instagrams and you're saying like, here's the two hundred kind of like incoming rookies basically like a draft, like the NFL draft or it's like college or minor Leagues, you know And it's like check out their Instagram. So on your Love Island website or app or however you want to do it You just have the big group of people from which you are going to pull the next cast everybody in the audience is encouraged to watch them, interact with them, et cca, et cca. Maybe that also alleviates some of the vasana U Lisa type shit, you know what I mean? It allows you to like weed that out earlier, but it also gives the audience something to do in the off season oping that like,h, these players I'm fllowing. I hope they get in next season. Yeah the voting meaning something, I think sometimes the audience can get frustrated with They're voting, but then it's ultimately on the producers to decide That means whether people are actually dumped Whether they get second chance dates. Totally. Who's voting? And there's no transparencyere was just Corbn voting Yeah But I'm talking about like America's votes. There's no transparency on it. They don't show us the end results. They just say like, you guys are safe. Here's the bottom three. What does that fucking mean? How many people should re use it after the episode because I think you still want to have that like moment where you're like, o, who's going they release it in the episode in order. They bring out a big screen and they say here's how the votes win. That's brutal. Coming in number one is this couple with this much of the vote, this percentage, which equates to this many total votes and you just keep going down and then it's like, you know who the bottom three are and here's how the shitty low amount of votes you got L's like Hunger Games projected into the sky Ooh, that'd be cool too G gott to figure out sky projection now. All right, let's move on to our. Third clip This is also Michelle Obama. U This is Michelle Obama talking about Long Island. hereere we go It's a valid st and it's doing really, really well. But it does show us like Love Island showed us a lot. Did you ever watch Did you watch? Oh my last two seasons of a lot? Yes You are my friend. You are home friend. The girls introduced. I didn't really know about it. I would pass over it And then one day it was this one summer or was it COVID? I don't know what no it wasn't COVID because it wasn't on. The girls were into it and it was the thing it came on every day and I was like, o, was I was judgy. I was like, ye, of course. How could watching these kids in their bathing suits become a thing? And then they were like, just sit down and watch with us mom. And I couldn't stop abbsolutely. I couldn't stop. I mean, and there was a discussion, deep discussion after every episode. Totallypeci I mean, especially this last season, there was a lot of like race politics came out play. there were randoments to play. there was like somebody like, you know, how as beautiful as Oandria, you're like, am I taking crazy pills here? Am I taking crazy? This is like one of the I've ever seen. But when you're in this sort of fish bowl of like P peopleople whose beauty standards are one way, you're just like, o, this is really, really weird. And then that's I love. It's like when she got out of the house, it's like she's going to fashion' what she deserves. but it's it's a lot of conversation over fandoms and race in the United States. And then the season before that, there was some weird like Dominican American stuff. like it was like it really highlighted Yeah. It's like a weird fish bowl and it brought up some racial politics like of like heteronormative romance in a way that I think is really interesting It is easy, It is lazy to me for people to count that out because it's reality TV. There's so much there I mean Brilliant, obviously, there's one little piece of that conversation that I think is really interesting. She says Aleandria when she came out of the house, got what she deserved because she's now doing modeling in sports Illustration and whatever. And I just recently watched I forget what the name of it is, but it was a Netflix documentary on America's nextxt topop model And o God. didid you watch that? I like saw a clip. of people watching it and then I was just like, oh my go, I can't. Yeah, it was brutal. But one of the main takeaways that I got out of it anyway was like All of these models came on the show and thought if I win this show or do well in the show, I'll get like modeling gigs. Yeah. None of them did It was viewed by the modeling world as like, less than you're not real models. And so even the women who won the show won various seasons, got virtually nothing out of it. A couple of them did for a minute, but nobody became like a real real model at least per the documentary. and now we're in an era where you don't even have to be on a modeling reality show. You just have to get famous off of like a dating show and they're inviting you to Paris Fashion Week and sports illustrors and swimshuits and shit. So like alone to me is kind of evidence that the genre is growing. It is moving in the right direction to get this kind of mainstream access, mainstream acceptance at least for the players who do well, you know It would be funny if it evolved and then it's just like only models at the end who are coming on the show. Yeah, I mean, I guess there's a piece of that too, though, that has to do with social media, the acceptance of social media as a viable and real media career. which I don't think in the beginning of America's Ne stop model, that was the case But now like influencer is a real job. And if you have X amount of followers, people want you to model their shit. And reality TV can give you that if you're on a big enough show and you do well enough. So I think the entire perspective shift of the importance of social media And the viability of it as an actual career has also drastically changed allowing a lot of different reality stars to be able to kind of make careers out of it Um But yeah, it's just fascinating to hear them talking about that. And like Michelle Obama watches Love Island I felt like I was On another planet hearing that clip. Yeah. I was like I want to hear that family conversation so bad that she said they discuss after each episode. I'm like What do they say about the heart rate challenge? What do they say about the he What did see about mom Family fireside chub. Holy shit. Yeah. Barocco has to coming way in Yeah Oh my God. Oh, I think H is pretty good, but she could do better That was my Barack Obama. Thank you. I also think like we're going to get to a point where like now, presidents and stuff The NBA Finals, NFL World Series. they all publicly about who they want to win. they invite the winning team to the fucking White House That's gonna to happen with Love Island or something like that There will be a big enough cultural moment in reality TV. It's not there yet. We don't have a Super Bowl yet in terms of cultural impact there that ay will come and I don't know what it'll be. I don't think it's any show currently on television. It's going to be something new It's UFC on the White House lawn No but UFC is a sport. I mean, that's not Reality TV exactly, you know what I mean I think that there there will be that time when it's like, oh, whoever wins And this isn't it because none of these shows have yet captured like an audience that big But like whoever wins traitors, like Rob Rauch gets invited to the White House or something, you know That would be great not for this presidency Rob, don't do it Maybe when Michelle Obama is president. Okay. You know what I was thinking about with our Twibin episode we did this week? Yeah I we were talking about Sean not going back to being a cop. U, u O UK, the intros were always Before They weren't a musical. it was peopleople basically in a sexy version of their work outfit in their workplace taking their throwing their job stuff away and like going in their swimsuits in slow motion. Like I'm going to love isolent That's great. I would love to see something like that In contemporary days. Okay. We have our next clip. We're getting out of Michelle Obama's podcast. We are moving now to page six radio This clips inccredibly important. It is Sean Rifle. Rell, refll, refel. I don't know how to say it still Yeah. talking about Things he did in Love Island with Ana that were never shown in the edit. This is contract violation territory Here we go If you want to hear what Seaan has to say about his interactions with Anaya that we never got to see.
