You werere just like, why is everyone making a big deal about this? And it turns out is just broken. I mean, it's just there's a hole And you're a little outgator, you got to scare the beers into the hole When they go in the hole eighty percent of the time, they just stop and look at it And it's like you got you just sort of have to play it enough to learn some of the weird And not guarantees, but like, okay, if I come with them from the side and kind of wiggle my little alligator butt a thumb and kind of constantly like circle the drain to get I in it. It was just I have no idea why that mini game was broken. It was just straight up sixty. you just got to do a sixty degree angle. It's simple. Yeah. Y, makes perfect sense But's it's wed to go like in the course of Un Wek go from Ducky Kong sixty four being a game I barely ever engage with to now. I'm like, I've seen everything man. I'm intimate with that right. Was it ultimateally was it ultimately kind of what you expected from the one on one A Hvestly in some ways not may be quite as painful as I might have hoped. I guess I was surprised. It is just a me thing. I am not that bothered by the constant character swapping. I get why it annoys a lot of people and it is a I would definitely mark it as a flaw of the game That's annoying to constant to be like, oh, I got to come back here as this character. I don't know what it was baby because I was streaming it like I had this extra layer of entertainment of talking to people or something, but I was never that upset like I got to go back to the character barrel and switch it up again. I get why there's a fan mod that just lets you switch characters wherever you want. And if that was an actual thing, it would have made it a better game for sure But like some of the annoying stuff I got through. it's honestly the game falls short and just what it it isn't. Like it is so dependent on those mini games, right? That's a lot of the gameplay. A lot of them just kind of are nothing are very easy or overly simple. Even like some like the stuff like Unlock Unlock this banana, you're in a room and there's six buttons numbered one through six. Guess what you do? You hit the buttons in order, right And like theres there's not that much platforming for a three D platform. It really is more of a run aroundound and kind of Push this switch, open up that door, go in there and play a mini game. It's an it's exploration. It's a literal Easter egg hunt That's pretty good at being that. like it is fun to collect things still I still felt good every time I got a banana or a battle badge or what have you and there's a lot of personality in the game. I like all those stupid apes. I love their little idol animations. I like the little weird noises that they make. Things like that. So like it's a fine video game you ended up kind of where I expected for you where you like you have you do have a higher tolerance like you were saying for a lot of that stuff Bink For me it was always like, yeah the hatred for it is a little overblown. that did become a little bit of a meme. It has always been a disappointing game. And I think it is still disappointing. like going back to it today when I try to go back I don't like hate playing it. When I'm playing it, usually I'm having a pretty okay time until I get to some of that stuff that is like, this is just here to elongate the process or whatever. they just or they didn't have the energy to design around some of these systems to make it as a little bit more seamless. I think in a lot of situations, they just don't make the decision that would make the game fun more fun a lot of the time. And I don't know, it was still really enjoyable watching you play kind of an ideal marathon game. I'll say that really ideal for that. Yeah. Right. In fact, like I know I' talked about want to do other ones but it is almost rough to think of something that's going to hit like Monkey Kong sixty four This game is kind of weird reputation and it is like specifically because it is annoying to one hundred one percent this game. There are so many things to collect even for One of these, the fact that it takes thirty plus hours in game time is kind of wild, right? And it's, you know, it's really more than that for sure So yeah, like Banjo two has a lot of stuff is a good hit like that. Glover is also a meanme game, but it's probably not as long. That's the thing. I just I literally just looked de up to be like, oh maybe that's next year' thing. We we mention it earlier, but it's like completioness is like average eight hours to beat. it's like that's like a day, you know, right.. So It's interesting. So ye you it's great for that. It's a very end sixty four game, right? No, yes. I'll say that for sure. Yeah kind of a quintessential one. yes, I agree I have a cartridge. it's fun. Very fun, veryer fun reminds me of orange cassette tapes from Nickelodeon. I don't take up too much time with this, but in our time hangout with Andrew, we did play a couple games onene of those games being Donkey Kong and guys. get it The original Donkey Kong huh? The original Donkey Kong Yeah for the arcade And it I think it's awakened something in me where I want to get better at it and I would want that would rule King of Kong Jan. So ye. we were talking about that a lot. King of Kong thing and like I I would love to see this Jan. but I think what scares me about trying to get better is I've played this game a million fucking times. I had the NES one and was decent at. but we're playing the arcade version And it's like, I cannot for life me figure out how to predict if those fucking barrels are going to go down the ladders. And that's where you always die. It's like, oh shit, I went down. I no' was going to go down. And it's like, I know there's a way to predict it or to manipulate it. So we look up on YouTube and it's like here's a over ninety minute long video about just the first level. And it's like, okay, so on the fourth girder This happens with this barrel if you do this, and if you hold right, when you're jumping left and it's like, I didn't understand fucking any of it. Where is her I'm like two and a half hours in so you know, about like the open world stuff has opened up and get to ride around in the batmail b. I've like introitt int to the regular Yeah, I've been having a good time with this. It's so weird and interesting how they're like, Let's take all the Batman movies and combine their plots into one And then the game is going to look and play like the Arkham games with like the Lego stuff in there. So it's this interesting hodge podge of a lot of things and sometimes I'm like did they did they hodge to podge? I don't know, but Oh to hodge to doodge. How can you sit there and even question hodging and podging? they did it well I'm Well I'm just saying because like,, you know, I feel like this I'm surprised you're even asking the question, right? Because feel like They hey, I know you And I know that you are just fond of like The hodgepodge vomit of like whatever it is you're heartts, isn't it Pro. You said it not me. No. I do think you're right though. I do think it's like Man, they somehow captured every last little bit of Batman canonical detail and Ephemera and like things that you're just like Oh wait, is that a reference to like? You know, you're just it's it's really, really granular way Yeah and right sweeping Yeah rightight out of the gate referencing like you said, every possible movie, like a lot of the comics like just just really making it so easy to digest. because I said this in the quick lookook like There's not been a really good Batman game probably since Is it okay to say like Arkam Kight? Yeah, I thinkr ye Yeah, I mean, they're That'sing, but yeah Yeah. I mean but I don't know. I think that game's like probably aged better. I liked it Yeah. Yeah, I liked it too. that was like was like twenty two was born twenty four even a hot moment. fifteen for sure night. Like the spring of fifteen, maybe twenty fifteen Winter eleven years. so So like way beyond overdue for a competent faithful, fun to play adaptation of that sort of media I'm really digging it. The quick lookook brings us to like the part where it opens up And, you know, I didn't really appreciate just the kind of scale that it does open up with because like you said, Mikey, you do have to do a bit of like ninety minutes of like ye Raj al ghuling right And I was like a little nervous because like Like these Lgo games a lot of time likeike, these are really charming and cute and pretty fun. I'm also kind of bored, right? Like the sh plays usually Not that deep You know, they're doing it it all plays like Arkham light like you have the combo systems. There's a little bit of that sneaking around stuff but it's not quite as in depth. But then once I got to the open world and opened up, I'm like, okay That's embarrars. There's still parts where I'm like Oh I almost wish they went full Arkem because you have the grappling hooks you can grapp everywhere but you can't Glide. I don't know. maybe I get that later, right but I gra flying, which was a big appeal of Arkham City and Arkham to me. It's got a little bit of a some grapple hook action. It's not bad Yeah it's heavy on the grappling, right? I mean, that's definitely Yeah like all sorts of grappling. like that combo archan system is mostly there. And that feels pretty fun And it's a little more generous probably, right? Sure. Yeah. Like I'm playing on their kind of media mode and you know, ye I mean, it's still a Lego game. I absolutely Yeah do get that for sure. And for me, like that's the thing, right? likeike I play, you know I was sing the. I' played so many of these Lego games in the last ten years I have a child and Yeah They're so long and they they kind of outstay their welcome a little bit for me just in terms of like variety of gameplay and all that kind of stuff. And I do think there is a much what appears to be a longer leash here because of the style and the kind of like you know, more of a of an ambitious sort of spin and kind of take on the whole thing. And I think that's going to give it a little bit more of of a sort of welcoming kind of reception, you know time period before I would bounce off something like this. but I think You know, was playing game last night,ike I think I'm gonna see it all the way through, especially with the co op and what it could do with and stuff like the writing in it it is is also very funny. you know, like good. Yeah U you're you're in store for like a certain type of humor when you go to a into a Lego game and now I've I've always fel a little bit back and forth when they started adding voices to the Lego. Sure. I kind of miss one is all pantthomimed too a little bit U But they s they they it sounds like they use some familiar talent from other Batman games or I think some of the other Lego Batman animated stuff So that's neat. I also just love it's just so stupid. like the slapstick humor and like Uh, and I just love that this game is another medium for seeing Bruce's parents die. We do do like a Lego way where it's like slip on a brick or something. The shoty though, like it's a legified. St pretty tame, I mean. And then of like peearls falling, it's like the little like c re. Yeah o. Yeah. like a lot of times the leg agains are almost more of a sensible chuckle than like a hearty laugh, but There are like some funny moments. like like when you're Batman again, you're going back to like that well and into the cave again for the first time with with Alfred to like set up your base. Like Alfred's like, Oh, remember what your dad said to you when you fell in here Master Bruce. He's like, Yeahah, said, whyy do we fall, Bruce? No, he said, donon't go messing around by that well again. That's pretty fun. There's a lot of fun stuff there. I sure. Yeah J because yeah, Kayla's coming town this weekend and I was trying to think something to play with her and like this comes out like the day she's com to town. And so yeah co op wise like is it Robin? Is it two Batmans? What what is It depends because like at first when you're doing the kind of Rosa stuff, it's Talia Th then after that for like the first major section where its it's largely Batman begins. It's it's Gordon Right And I imagine it will become Robin because it' still sort of chapter based, right? even once you get to the open world I mean like if Kayla's playing the second character, will she just like, Oh, I'm boring S Gordon or does he have they get bordn in something. Now look, it's not going to be hook right away. Yeah. Yeah, and eventually get yeah, he gets the hook. it's fine. I mean, look, everybody would rather be Batman, I think. C be swap on the fly. Like if I' Batman Yeah, and' be like hey you can think Batman for the next thirty or something Yeah I I wonder I'm sure you I want to in single player you just hit down on the D headad.. Okay. o I like this new kind of, you know, for a while they're making a ton of these games' almost too much. I like this now where each of the kind of franchises gets the one big definitive one They did that was Star Wars. Now we have this. I kind of hope L to be the next one. I bet it's Harry Potter. I'm understanding it probably will be This this has been just incredibly well done like in terms of making this kind of game about about as good a job as I can imagine U They should do a Lego James Bond. I know that we're getting first light soon. they should do Lego James Bond. That'd be stupid and funny. Speaking about games that may be targeted towards children, Dan Reichker has a review now on the website for a game that still continues to baffle me and why it exists. But we have Yoshi and mysterious book What baffles you likeike why Where was she he's beloved I know that Hello, did you say, Jan? You hate this Jan fuc He's guys Yoshi thing there. I got the Yoshi thing right here. I'm just like, why why is he whyy is he got a read for? Why What's he? Have you played? Is Island? Yeah. you guys made me play. Yeah you did that recently. Yeah Yoshi's great. What's your problem? I don't have a problem with Yoshi. I'm just like why this is an odd choice for Nintendo. Why are we doing this I mean, Iowt Kirby in the well and kill him forever before Yoshi indy dayay of the week. No I don't know if that' Kirby. donon't Kirby This is I said in the review, which I gave four out of five stars It is like, I feel like ever since Yoshi's Island, you know, Super Mario World two It has been A lot of weird experiments, whether it's like oh touch and goo or Topsy Turvy, like Motion or Tap stuff or whatever, or it's just been Yoshi's Island but worse And like I've been feeling that way ever since Yoshis story I was so excited about because like, Oh yeah I love Yoshi's Island. And the Yoshi Story is a dumb game for babies. And then yeah, Yosh's New Island Yoshi island the Yes. it's just like I stopped getting excited about Yoshi games because of this long lineage of disappointing ones This is probably the best case scenario, I think for this wor. It's like let's just do a totally different thing and it's not It's trying to be just like another platformer. It's not trying to like ape any other, you know, existing kind of two D s scroller thing. You have the same abilities You're throwing eggs you're eating enemies, your butt stomping, all that stuff. It's all in the service of like solving puzzles almost, more than it is platforming challges likeike you're not dying If you fall in a hole it just kind like brings you back up to where you fell down. and they' might not be like platforming puzles, right I mean, there is platforming. like there are like so the thing is every like page like every level is a part of this book that is focused on one creature. So it's like Chapter two will be this habitat that is probably not the actual one, but like you know, it's the woods. And so here's these like kind of caterpillar looking things. and here's these weird little ring creatures and stuff. And you go in and you're almost like studying these creatures to fill out like the book has like forgot its contents. And so you have to like go back in and you name the creatures. And so like every time you run into a new creature, it's like, kind of the same thing we're like, right,'m gonna to lick And then it'll like sometimes that'll do something and you'll get like a little objective for that. and then it's like, oh, you try to eat it. You try to pick it up. you try to stomp on it. You're just kind of like poking and prodding. at everything and seeing what it does. and Sometimes it's a thing that hops on your back and it's a flower that like blooms other flowers. Sometimes it is like a jellyfish thing filled with water on your back that you can use as like a jet pack Some of them feel like it's almost like mine cart type levels from Donkey Kong where it's like there's skkateboard surfboard looking thing with eyes and it's like you're kind of riding waves and stuff like that and collecting, you know, five or six of these collectibles. So like there's a huge variety and every time you go into a level, you don't really know what that interaction. with the character is going to be. So I think that is a huge part of the fun of this. It's just every time going in just like it's not like I'm just going to run from left to right and avoid enemies and jump over pids. It's like I gott to find this thing. I got it's almost like you're hnting it almost like a like a on snaps not the right reference. But you know what I mean? Wh' it's like I'm just po in pd of this and see how I can interact with it. I then a bug snack's like breath of the wild, it's chemistry system, right? Like all these things have like different like properties and like depending on what you do to them, they can then go on and affect the other things around them in different ways. It's weird. Yeah.' Yeah I was going to say that was the thing that Will and I were saying when we played. It was like Oh, it's just not very clear. likeike you you're just sort of left your own devices that you know, when we were playing it at the event, there was like a Nintendo helper there who was more or less like I'm going to give you fifteen minutes before I'm going to intervene and kind of like push you in the right direction. and you kind of have to have the patience to poke around and see what all the buttons and all all the things do before You realize like, oh, this is the theme of this chapter Right where it's like, oh, you know, you have to like bloom flowers or you have to you know, u create bubbles or whatever it is like there's a that's part of ' the levels right Dan, like the levels themselves are very small for Most of them are Yeah, most of are small for sure. Yeah. the meat and potatoes are like you know, unpacking the kind of language at each level in chapter sort of speaking And to that point, it's like you don't even really know going in what the ultimate objective is because like as you're going around and you're poking and proding, you're getting all these like sub objectives and you're earning stars and you're collecting flowers and stuff for that. But like to beat each level, there's just kind of like a question mark final thing. It's not, oh, you get to the right and you go through a goal post or you beat a boss or something. It's not like that. It's like, oh, okay This character at the top of a tree U is sad because they don't have this item or whatever. and so you eventually have to like find a way to utilize these creatures and stuff to bring whatever the thing they want to them. you know, And then it's like you'll get a big kind of goal thing that you can choose to end and back out or you can stay in the level and try to find more objectives and stuff like that. Like if you want to like complete something, I would imagine for kids, this would be super fun because it's not inccredibly difficult to beat each level But there are so many little sub objectives and flowers and things to find here. and just combined with the inherent low stakes of everything. I think it just would be a very fun one to fill out the entirety of the book. you know I'm curious. I've been so skeptical about this and almost up until now I'm like I don't know if I'm even gonna to play this one I'm like I guess I Ne to probably at least try this thing I'll say that like, you know, when I started it, I was like kind of thinking it was going to be more like I would feel about it the way I kind of feel about Yoshi story where it's like or like a Kirby' epic yarn where it's like, All right, this is very charming, love the art style This is a little too simplistic for me or whatever. But especially like as you get later in the game, like there is there's a first set of credits and then there is like a substantial amount of stuff that opens up And as I got further into that, it's like, Ohh man, we've got some ideas here. Like there are some levels that are wildly different than anything I've seen in one of these types of games before U So yeah,s the variety keeps up throughout and if anything just made me like it more and more as I kept going Yeah, I'm I am I definitely think this is a cool idea for this series. I will always have Yoshi's Allen on pedestal sort of above just about any other two D platformer. It's up there with the greats. You love the Marioorld series, so yeah. How I love the Mario World series. exxactly. Yeah always want them to go back and do more of those. Doesn't seem like that's going to happen. So if they aren't going to do that necessarily or if they try to do it do it in a way that's disappointing U Yeah, try something different and this is man, right up my alley. so I'm pretty excited about this one. I'd be curious too, if you show the kids I'm going to like Kirby I don't know they feel about Yoshi, but I'd cur love Yoshi, but more than that, they like having ownership over their gameplay experience. That's why they love Tomodacci life so much. they get to create their own stuff. So going in there naming things Yes and sort of being little scientists, that's also up their alley. I'm really looking forward to see how they engage with that Is this only out on the Switch one or swwitch two, sorry. this is switch two exclusive. Yeah. This is switch too exclusive. Yeah. switch too exclusy over there. Yeah somethingomething that also hit the swwitch two And I am a little bit concerned for my boys here. Why someomehow y'all figure it out a way Bing back and talk about Cory again. Let's go didid this. Yep Sanctori is now in the Switch two boys It W a new leaderboard, which means I be less people playing or more. I don't know, but o either way, it's brand new. could maybe get at the top of leaderboard. My first run, I got to the sixth in the world at that game. but then I had five lives. and if you play the game, you know what it's like to die in the Red where it doesn't matter how many lives you are I have. So I just wiped out five lives and I was already sixth in the world and I was like The feeling it gave me was like, I can't do this again. I can't put myself this again. Oh my God I I had the good run. So it's like I still have the highest on the because there's three difficulty levels. They put them on the same leaderboard I have the highest on the introductory leaderboard or the introductory mode that you have to do before you can unlock the other modes. and I'm think I'm still looking in the top ten for the scores. So that's fun. Apparently the game' doing really well in Switch. Good to. Yeah. apparently I said that he's going to start paying himself a salary because it's doing well in Switch right you deserve to have some payment Yeah, exactly. But yeah, it's it works well in the swwitch two. I you know, playing it with the little Joy C. I got really used to playing it on the Steam deck, which has more substantial analog sticks. Whatever. you're going to be able to get used to that stuff. People will adapt a little bit more than I could after playing a hundred hours in a very specific way. But yeah, it looks great on there. I didn't notice any like slowdown or anything. maybe a moment once, but Nothing notothing true abnormal and nothing that would stop you from having fun with this game And it's also something like most people are not going to see because this is like You know, I'm doing the dumbass like run where I just have every possible upgrade and I've been playing for thirty five minutes and at the very end of the run. So yeah, most people are not going to see anything like that when they're just kind of going through the basic of the again, the introductory difficulty mode, just trying to see the ending You can play it that way. if you start playing it as a leaderboard game, it is absolutely addictive. so watch out. Be careful U Speaking about being careful. I suggest everyone, be careful on the internet because people cannot be normal about this next video game. I I was playing a game for review and I finished that. and I was I kept going back to Fortza, which I will probably talk about here in a second But yeah, I was like I should I should go back and finish M Nick's tape. and I really enjoyed it by the end there. I think it really nails what it's going for. It really does Make it clear That it's like the game knows what these teenagers teenagers excuse me, what these teens are and like that they aren't supposed to be the coolest people in the world. They are just supposed to be people trying to figure things out and her own personal metaphor for I made the soundtrack for tonight and you're ruining the soundtrack by making these decisions that are different than what I had planned for is very much, you can tell an anxiety response, a trauma response of like, I'm trying to control for like my life and make it perfect and things aren't going right right now. and I'm trying to adjust, but I had the perfect night planned out and you're ruining it. And it's like, okay, that's a very clear metaphor. And they play around with that left and right. and Yeah, by the end there was definitely like, okay, I really like these characters. I am moved by these moments that they're having. Uh it's really well done Yeah, I um I had to put the game down because then it I started like getting into my own feels about it. and then I really wanted to show it to to a friend And now I have to do the calculus of like, okay, how do I show this to them Do I just bring a steam deck over or a laptop Do I stream the game to you? How are we going to do this? Because you should see what video games are like? because The neat thing about presenting something like this to the normies out there that don't engage with the video games is like Oh, you could do this. This looks c Um It's almost embarrassing that we haven't done it at this point, right? Like playing thisame it's like almost embarrassing that the games have not tried to do the one crazy night teenage story. That's such a universal story. like it's worked in a lot of mediums, especially movies though. Yeah. and it's like, o, video games are very good at like getting to emotions on like a, hey, this person is just floating across the screen for a while because they're experiencing something and they're almost not in control of their body. And here's what that can kind of physically feel like. It's like, oh yeah, this is like exploring this thing we've we've had in media a lot. in a slightly different way and a slightly different angle. and yet it's still pairing it up with a lot of recognizable visuals, a lot of recognizable audio And all of it works because of that and it feels fresh because it's a game Y'll know that this game reminded me of sorry, backlog just real quick. Donkey Kunk. would it remind you? No, not Donkey Kunk goodoodness, you're here Oh really. Okay.'s a because like this Gub, like you said, this is taking such a wild swing in a direction that isn't often explored with its it's also tyinitely a cartoon. like this is defply a cartoon. Yes. and than goodness, you're here It's like a It's a moving cartoon, right? It's an interactive cartoon back there. you're going to You're right, extreme watchability. like watchability that every game would kill to possess like that I think Be it it it is without a doubt, unlock something with, you know, Stace watching it where she was just like, oh, let's watch mixtape tonight. Like let's do that. Sure. In bed. That's right. We're playing it bed. ye. I have no reservations saying that out loud. Mike Thats confidence. Yeah. no, it's u No, it's it's I think it's is it is an intoxicating watch, incredibly watch watchable thing. And I think that Uh, it it It is this onboarding for like Again, people who are not kind of aware of the risks, that risks, but just like the different kind of like ways to tell a story and what it is and everyone thinks like a game is just like, you know This very one way street of engagement And I know that's old hat. and I know we've been all collectively beating that drum for twenty years now But yeah, it's fun, just fun, just low stakes fun Yeah, I ask stakes. there was a time where like There were all kinds of different games early on in gaming where stuff was happening on PC and there was and there was adventure games and all this other stuff. And people just were like, Yeah, there's a lane over there. I'm not engaging with and that's fine. It's not for me And I just think recently reaction to stuff like this when it's like, this is a game that's not for me and I need to destroy it is's coming from this place of like anxiety about gaming overall Yeah where I think like U People feel like it's under threat because if you are not financially feasible then this stuff is going go away because it's going to get subsumed by free to play or all this other stuff that's like it's going to get subsumed by the Fortnights of the world or the Robloxes. And people are right to have that fear. Like that is what that is what's happening to gaming. So when something pops up that is popular that or is getting good reviews at the very least, isn't your style and and the people come out at it with this is not a real game It's just very clear that is insecurity, that is fear about where gaming is going And it's like that we all sense that and like there's a reason we'd like dismiss it, but we should be like calling it. it's like You're You have a very limited idea of what gaming could be if you're saying this is not a game. And I know Dan, you're not saying that. No This is just a retread of the fucking gone home thing in like twenty four was it twenty fourteen, twenty thirteen or something like that. And it was stupid and exhausting back then, and it's like I've been a clear, Mixtape is not a game that's for me. I talked about why I don't like it. but I'm not going to get fucking mad that other people enjoy it That's It'ss dumb and it's like You kind of have to hate games to say this this is not a game. like I go further. Yeah. I would go further, Greb. I think those types of people hate themselves and it's an incredibly reductive way to look at things They hate themselves and they're going to fucking create an alt account and play through the entire game anyway U numberber one, they're just closeted about it. I think like u You know, it's like not everything's fucking team sports, man Yeah Not everything's fucking team sports. you like it's not this or that. The world is not binary. like th U and that kind of ridiculous petulant behavior Yes None of us knowhere. All of us knowhere rather. Yeah. So u Fuck off. Yeah. that's kind of like where I ended up with it, especially was like, yeah, this is cartoon, getting upset that this is not an accurate representation of some very specific time and place is like, well Tom and Jerry's nothing what it's like owning a cat. It's like, yeah, good point. Like I think that we just kind of have to grub It's like with except like, oh, they are going for something and they are purposefully kind of not trying to nail anything down to make it feel like this is how it was in this time and place like in a very accurate way, so that they do have the freedom to be a more universal experience. And at the end, they nail that. And I was, like I said, very moved. Yeah. And I mean, when you look at the developers Beethoven and dinosaur, correct U yes. Those are two Australian dudes that are heavily referencing like what it was like to grow up in Northern California in the eighties and nineties. Like this is Yeah, it's like a glimpse it is like a fictional glimpse into a fictional world for them because like this is something abutely is not ideidolized idealized mythologized. Yeah myologiz because of like media, movies and everything You know what I think would hit so fucking hard if you had a style of game like this kind of following maybe not necessarily mix tapes formula of how the story is being doled out, but maybe something like that coming of age story, a teen drama, like a breakfast club in an until Dawn style video game Yeah. everyveryone dies No ye, of course Maybe But But yeah, Je, like that I also thought about that. like people from other countries mythologizing American culture. It's like that is them saying we think this is cool or worthy of our time And then also freaking out about like, oh, this is not an accurate representation of that is kind of screaming back. We're insecure and we're not as cool as you think we are. And it's like, come on, everyone just relax. It's okay. If again, if it's not for you, that's the position to have, move on with your life and And then if you have criticisms, definitely state that. But it's I think a lot of it was getting it wrong from these people who are losing their mind on Twitter. whichich again, we don't have to make everything about them, but sure, sure sure. At a c point, we do have to like kind of keep pointing out why they theirre thinking is so flawed and protect these spaces a little bit. And I think that's what we're doing here. Yeah, I can only see a game like this pushing the medium of V games' storytelling devices forward. You know, I talked about last week that I know that there is some criticism that this game is too white And that's hey, gang, that's a lot of things going on in the world constantly. But I hope that this inspires people to try and make a stab and take take a leap of trying to tell whatever their respective stories are and we're in no short supply of games of similar Iilks out there in the indie space that eventually do wind up blowing up. I had another game to play for review after that as soon as I finished that that night When I was tired, wanting to go to bed play a little bit of Fortza. and now that the game is live for everybody Which I think happened today, although you couldn't tell that it wasn't live for everybody from the last week because it seemed like a million people were playing the one hundred and twenty dollars version I kind of always forget. it's like, yeah, in this review period where it's kind of quiet and low key because there's not a lot of people playing at the same time. So they don't populate the world with the other drivers as much that once that does get switched on, Oh yeah, this game is also just so vibrant with Those multiplayer opportunities or just your friends constantly beating your scores on different things and then them sending you messages or you just see a conclave of other cars and not even one that's like people like hanging out together. It's just like this is a hotspot on the map where there's a couple cool things to do. and so you see the cars which become transparent when it's time to drive past them so you don't can't affect one another and annoy another person and trol them. Oh, I wonder what's going on over there and that sort of draws you into that that space to see what is And you can easily like begin losing forty five minutes of like, oh, I see what they're doing. Let me try to get in on this action They, o, this great game better now that it's live and I'm just yeah continuing to be very happy with this game. I've been playing a lot of it You know even like when I was doing Donkey Kong, I had a little time for a little treat for myself for and I was like maybe a bit of for it you're sick. sicko huh. Then this weekend though, just really diving in and've been playing a lot of. I've always liked the Horizon games, mayaybe not as much as some people, but I think I've already played this one more than any of the other ones. just, you know, the vibe is great. They've done that and as's pretty freaking cool It just I know some people are going to play this game a completionist mindset. I really like playing it like I wasm going to, you know, do what I need to do and I'm sort of working towards the goals of getting those wristbands and that is pleasant enough. There's always a race somewhere that I can do or some kind of event and on the way I'm going to smash over some of these mascots or billboards and it's going to tell me like well Crunch Bogus has this many of those mascots mas him U I always I'm always tuned on to that one a Japanese radio station. That's the best one By far That's great, but it I've complained before about the horizon games and the kind of festival vibe of it being a bit obnoxious. They're like, Yeahah on social media right? like that thing. That's toned down quQuite a bit here. You still kind of have these like friend characters and I'm like who are these guys? Wh are these guys? And I'm like Yeah, whatever. it it's fine U But God just running around, just racing around. the game is just like maybe the best looking video game ever. It's so freaking pretty Yeah. have you guys don't you don't have to, but have you tried turning off any of the assists Making you driving more Yeah like you guys are very happy with the arc I love it. Yeah, Yeahah I don't mind the line and things like that. Yeah. Yeah, sure, of course. I mean the l. Yeah I use the line. The line is like, Ohh, had I played these courses a hundred times and had it memorized, which is like what a real racing driver would do So of course you want to have the wine. Yeah U you guys are just playing this with a controller, correct. Anyone busts out a whe I got luck with real Yeah That's greati I'm anti wheel, man. I don't know. I would anti wheel. If you could sit near your driver' city with the Xbox controller were you do City would? Yes. Maybe that sounds pretty good, actually. I don't know. I think I might My feet get tired Okay. I've never liked I've never liked the steering wheel roll The Xbox controller is really good for this game. So I mean there's not a bad option here Yeah. No, that's right. Yeah, absolutely. people do point out like, oh, you like those rumble triggers. You must love the dual sense. I looked it up for I don't know for this game, but for five, they never made those dual sense triggers work the way the Xbox triggers work for telling you how much trier you have with with the tires I would love they would because that could be really cool. but I mean, I just need the information from the controller to tell me How much grip I have because I am playing with like simulated with with simulation steering And with u like antiock braaking turned off. So I need all of that so I know when I can actually begin to do this turn and just slowly go go off the brakes and onto the gas. And yeah, having that with this controller does make this game that much more enjoyable. But Yeahah, my revelation this week was The reason I like this game so much is it does remind me of Wave race sixty four, which was a game that is very arcadeady, but underneath has all of this simulation happening. and both are happening at the same time and this game is exactly the same way. Bloomberg's Jason Sreyer reported that Herman Holst told Playsttation staff in a town hall on Monday or maybe that was a ye on Monday. that Sony's major first party Single player games will no longer come to PC going forward I could definitely confirm that this is true because I was getting texted from that same thing. and it was like, o little, Jason's reporting from someone texting them during this town hall meeting. So yeah, that that is the case. We've known this has been the case for a while But now it's confirmed internally We're still kind of feeling like, yeah, this what probably happened here is they did some more games on PC, but not so much more that it changed like their fortunes And they are a little bit worried like, okay, we solve the problem of we wanted to make more money But now we have a new problem of maybe the PlayStation five feels a little bit less special in the Playsttation six could feel a lot less special. And certainly the audience was getting trained if you want the best version or a really good version in some cases, they weren't as good. Wait for the PC later. And I definitely think like there's a lot of us on this show who are like, yeah, if I was going to play Soros, I would play that on PC. I'll even wait for it on PC. I wonder if they're worried about that sentiment spreading and that's what this is a reversal of really It just seems like an odd decision across the board where I I couldn't find my PS five for a while so I couldn't play anything on it. You know, want to circle back to Yote But then now the time has passed where I don't really have that interest in Yote, Sorrows. actuallyually I want to talk about this earlier during Batman, but my I've been using my dual sense as my controller in and the my PC and it just shit the bed for whatever reason won't fire up. registering or anything And I don't want to buy another dual sense for my PS five. So I may never boot up my PS five again I're doing it's like the opposite of everything is an Xbox. Marginin. No, this is a PlayStation five. Just Yeah, they definitely, I think they definitely got concerned about Um the fate of what happened to Xbox and people going, what do you need an Xbox for? No No one was saying, what do you need a PlayStation five for? Yet Things were maybe trending in that direction and they don't even want to fuck with that. is kind of the sense I get. And that does make some sense. but yeah Again, we knew this was coming. Now it's confirmed The first games that this really is affecting is Yot and Soros. The multiplayer games definitely still going to come to PC probably even day one. Hell divers sort of cemented that. O it's going to be weird of like Spider Man because we've had those hitting PC an All of Yeah next one Wolvering. you're not going to be getting those over there. So training Two was not too long ago, right? Yeah. yeah. Yeah. they published Yeah, they did publish that one actually on PC even Um Yeah. I think They can always reverse this decision in the future and I think they will, but it'll be after a couple years beyond the launch of the PS six. Yeah. And I mean if it feels like they're being very sensitive about launching the PlayStation six right now and they know it's going to cost a lot of money So yeah, like if one more reason people can say that talkks comes out of it is well, I have this nice computer that's probably as powerful as a PlayStation six. anyways. why am I buying a PayStation six I can just wait two, three, six, I'll wait a year even for those games to come to PC They just tell people they aren't coming to PC, then you can make FomMo happen Exactly. Make FOMO happen is a huge business model. All right, let's see PlayStation pllus price hikes happened for new subscribers. Starting may twentieth, Sony is raising select PlayStation pllus esssential short term plans for new customers basically The one month plan is going from ten dollars to eleven dollars and the three month plan is going up by three dollars total to twenty eight one dollar a month across the board, basically. notot huge, but people were definitely like responded to this with, oh my God, does everything have to go up in price constantly with you, Sony and And it's not just Sony, it's everyone, but Sony, I been getting a little bit shellaced for this because they are seen as the default and they are seen as having people locked into their ecosystem in a really strong way. So they're taking advantage of that. And of course, I'll remind people, the CFO, Lynn Tao, I think is her name said in February, like that's exactly the strategy. It is, hey, memory prices are going up. We are going to offset that byy monetizing our installed base. That means making more money, Nickel in diming everybody. Oh fine That's what this that's what the stuff looks like and everyone's going Okay, so we're the most loyal. We show up for everything. We buy everything and we are getting punished with higher prices constantly because you know that you can get away with that with us. We are starting to notice that Eventually that piles up enough and falls over a cliff for them, but it's not happened yet. GT six is still coming. They have a they still have a lot of slack that they're working with. Are they at risk of I don't know what. Like are they at risk of anything happening here on the like the other shoe dropping Just maybe pub sentiment, right Yeah like people are feeling burned. Yeah. It's going to take one big fop, right Or one big like like imagine if Wolverine doesn't hit, right? rightight? Yeah. somethinghing like that. somethinghing that really tips the skills. or imagine they people find out that a woman advies on that game or something. then they'll really recap Wh who what? It's just a default C of duty machine or Fortnite machine. just kind of the default living room video game machine so many people. there's there's a line. obviously there has to be a line somewhere And they might have some wiggle room here Boy the other thing is when we find out the price of the PlayStation six, what is that going to look like? and how are we going to react to that? Nothing notothing under seven hundred dollars, right for PlayStation. Oh God no. No, no, no, no. Now. I'm gonna say seven hundred fifty Yeah, I mean if they get away with seven hundred fifty, right? That's like that even that feels like a little bit of a steel. I'm like Yeahah, I'm almost shocked if it's below eight hundred at this point. Yeah. Yeah, they are Luxury items is what they're turning into, yah go a J. And I hate that aspect just because it's a fun hobby There are toys to play with I saw some rumble of people that have recently picked up a switch to and are now kind of coming to terms with the switch to tax of like Oh, these games are a little bit more expensive now. These games are like ten dollars more. and att least on the switch two, you' getting games made by Nintendo at least this year U, if you're all on the Playsttation side of that and you want to play these single player exclusives, I don't know how many we're going to be getting from year to year. That is that is also that's a good point. likeike, yeah, they're making a big deal about this. There aren't a ton. That's probably one of the reasons why they are also doing this is got to make them special. They got to make them feel special and there's a couple of year at this point. that really do have the potential to feel that special And even like, you know something like Soros does it doesn't feel seventy dollars special to a lot of people. That is I think you can kind of almost definitively say that at this point based on early sales.. I don't know if it's reporting or just kind of murmururing that that's been a little slow out the gate, right, Soros Yeah. Yeah, that's exactly it. I think that we kind of we had the early murmurine and then we had the UK charts It was yeah, it was kind of looking lackluster so far. And I would chal that up almost entirely to it being seventy dollars and people kind of get being really sick of that, being like not everything is going to be worth seventy dollars. I don't feel that way. And I don't aggree that Saros isn't worth that, but a lot of people have that feeling going into that game. I wonder some people also felt a little confusion because of just how gameplay it looks exactly, notot exactly, but similar enough to returnal where they like a returnal two if that was on the box would have helped there a little bit N maybe. I don't know. Yeah, it's f to say I do think there's this like unspoken kind of like, maybe stigma is the wrong word, but I do think like that those house markark games do suffer from this sort of like affordability expectation Right? Like there's something going on there. I can't quite put my finger on it, but Yeah. I don't know I think people were getting used to seventy dollars games And then gas prices kept going up and gcices keep going up and inflation's back and the producer price index is up four percent. and that Mans that's the inputs, that's how much it costs for producers to make stuff. That doesn't mean that the consumer price index, the price we pay, has seen the effect of that yet. We all know higher prices are yet to come And everyone's just going I need to save money where I can. I'm going to be a little bit more stingy when I come when I start thinking about games and you really have to win me over. I games were preited in a time when that just wasn't as much of a deal. Yeah. I could buy this game from five years ago that's on sale for ten bucks and apparently it's one of the best games ever I have been play. Yeah. And it's not like it was in the nineties. That game from five years ago basasically just as technically impressive as a game from today, so why not get that I like that's a lot of stuff to battle. Yesterday on Gameess mornings Lexi shared that she was for whatever reason playing through all of the Borderlands games and pre sequel. Yeah. And like those you can easily do that and those games still contribute well. Well it comes to like what Mike was also saying of like there are older games that still look amazing, still feel great and you can get them exponentially cheaper. than games that are coming out now Yeah, I think someone I would want to get on gameess mornings so you're pretty it's like someone who like is steeped in like a Affordable gaming. There's people who like you know their whole thing is just I never want to pay more than ten dollars for a game. likeike how can you make gaming affordable today? I would love to like begin thinking about stuff in that way because I think that's where we're going to be for the next little bit, even as these things go up to astronomical prices, suggesting that that is the value of them People who play games have not agreed to that yet. We don't know that everyone's going to be like, yeah, sure.'ll we'll go along for the ride on this. I think a lot of people are going to hop off or try to find other ways to enjoy the hobby still. I think there's going to be like Excuse me, a very u Tangible like holding powder. Right where people just sort of rediscover stuff that they that they have not already. Like you said, Mikey, I think they it's just by virtue of like, The market just can't handle it R? Like you could be charging what you want to charge for these Luxury items not a guarantee that people will just, you know bend over and capitulate to that. And remember you know Remember when Outer Worlds is going to be Oer Worlds two is going to be eighty dollars xought better that real quick. Bring back mini consoles. That's what we need in this industry. We never got the sixty four. No or dreamcast Yeah. Give me my Saturn mini God Well like Marino points us out in chat and says, O you could play Crimson Desert for two hundred plus hours over the course of two months, orr is that just me? But that's not that's not just things know. You know that's looking for a lot of people you know like, you know, that game came along with that promise right at a time when a lot of people are really feeling this and it's that sentiment is only increased. So yeah, I think that is why games like that really do work for people is they just like, hey, I can play this one thing and I don't have to worry about what's happening with all these other games and all these other prices I got my money spent on this thing and it's going to deliver anyayment for months. And if you're playing a game like Crimson Desert or Redead Redemption two on PC. There's like a different level of mod support that you can engage with that like we'll just revitalize the game. Greb. You are playing Starfield with a Star Wars mod. Yeah that changed the game up completely. So and I didn't pay a dollar for any of that. Yeah it's a whole new game crazy. All right, and you know all that conversation, one dollar. That's how much they're raising the price. Now one dollar per month, that stuff does add up, but and Sony definitely feeling a little bit of Ohh like, God, I mean we need to raise prices because we have you know, investors to keep happy and everyone's like at a certain point, you're going to have to turn away from them and be like, look, we are just going to make a little bit less money because things are more expensive We got to keep the audience happy, but they don't feel that right now because Grant up Auto sixix and PlayStation does not have any real competition. Even if they did, I don't think of these companies feel like they're competing with each other. They are competing to make as much money as much profit as possible in their macroeconomic environment And they're still competing with anything that's distracting people like that all That's how you get Nintendo still making mobile games in twenty twenty six. Yeahep. But like the silly thing is I do feel like their direct competitor has always been Well, now it's been short for video, TikTok and other social media, but especially with Uh like movies, TV shows and with the price of the streaming services constantly going up and up I got hit with a bill for one of them. I'm like Do I really need to see these shows? Do I really need to follow this I would take that as an opportunity for something like PlayStation pllus of like, you know what, let's try and lower it by a dollar. Let's be the place where people can wind up feeling okay about spending their dollars because it's at least marginally cheaper and then hopefully get more people in the net. But Yeah hu. U All right, let's shift over to Grand Theft Auto six. There was a lot of smoke around preorders because Best Buy sent out a message Tw They're affiliate marketers, which are these people like, you know, I'll point to Wario sixty four is one that everyone's going to know. These are guys that like have relationships with these big retailers and the retailers are like, hey Tell people about this and that's why you see like the hashtag ad and a lot of the stuff. gets a little bit of a cut when he sends you to a business a business to buy something. Well that is, you know, that is an official sort of thing and a lot of that stuff is communicated through these messages from the company. And bestest Buy said that on may eighteenth, Grand Theft Auto six is the preordders will go up And then that will continue through like a sort of an affiliate promo event through may twenty first. Now you may notice that today is may nineteenth. And this did not happen I think you could probably safely assume that that means it's it's not going to happen, but hey, that to earnings report is still supposed to happen this week. So maybe they will talk about this game in some way before that. But My understanding is like, you know, I don't know for sure. thingsings can change. I'm here and we probably don't see that game in any real way until July. So we're going to get well past summer Gamefest before we hear from Rrand theft Auto six again. So seems like that was a mistake on bestest Buy's part is how it's being framed now. the retailers should being like, Yeahah, Best Buy just made a mistake. that that is that was never the case.. So yeah U Grand of Auto six going to wait tntil July. It can, right? It can wait til later this year before they start time. It can wait. Yeah, pretty much as long as they would att some point it's going to have to appear like it's a real video game though I mean, that is the one thing where I kind of was like getting like some hopes up of like, yeah, can we just get to the preorders and see this final trailer so that we can move past that and like really get to the final stretch of this game coming out because Take two did have their earnings and their stock price is swaying on Grand Theft Auto six news and obviously it would be. I fired up MX unleashed on the series X, and it makes those classic original Xbox games look a lot better. Re polishes those games up So played some current Motocross games And they just don't hold to the classic raainbow Studios games I'm just curious when the fun got out of Motocross, I don't really hear you guys talk about it this much, so I figuure I'd ask if we're ever going to see another trials game or any other fun motorcycle games I love the show and have been listening for a long time. You guys are always a great listen. loveve, John Yeah this is this happened across this genre in a bunch of genres. They're like You know, this goes back to in ' sixty four when like we were when they were first doing three D games and they could simulate physics in a three D environment. And they're like, we then we should, we should do that. likeike when you press Down on the analog stick, you should look up and when we have the ability to have a deep physics system, we should be able to try to make it as realistic as possible because that's what fun is. And then there was sort of a whiplash backlash to that of like No, we should make it as arcady as possible and kind of back away from that because people just want to have a good time and make cool stuff happen on the screen. And it's like it turns out both are true. This is why Fortz and Horizon is so good And I but I think a lot of these smaller franchises in these motorsport like series are they can't sustain that. So they kind of have to do the thing that is lowest common denominator. And I do think that is sand off all the rough edges, just make sure cool stuff is happening on the screen and people don't feel too overwhelmed. And I think that takes a lot of the charm out of it. it's a shame. I think we'll get Another trials game in the future. I they kind of lost the plot a little bit by the end. was Dion the last one No, I don't think that was the last. There was that weird Blood dragon one. I remember that. Yeah was trials The Blood Dragon or whatever. Yeah. I think evolution was the peak of that series for me, not It was R. Trials Rising was the last one.. Evolution is the best by far.
