You believe Devil wears p at it. I say you can wear that Saturday night. A couple days goes by, we're in the airport. We're on our way to LA. We had something in the morning. Ands but it started like pre pandemic, we were thinking about this. I had one child before this. A any point where you like shoot, I don't know basketball or I happened to and as you know, don't know anything, I'm very indifferent to most sports. randomly growing up, my dad was a huge Celtics fan and grew up in Boston.orry. Everyone is such a great character. The chemistry is so good.. We were so lucky and it just felt like and this is really a testament to Kate. Like once Kate wanted to do it, it was, you know, getting Jay Ellis and all the great Octavia Spencer, they had this prior relationship and everyone just wanted to act with the cast. It was amazing. too the point where I was like, I'm jealous. Why can't I be on the show? We feel really lucky with who is on it. I think Max Greenfield. was so funny and great when you guys broke up this season. I was like, can I step in? He's such a cutie. So yeah, we were really lucky. Do you have any dream characters that you would like like to cast. like any actor that you're like, I really want them in it. Chet is we love Chet so much. I would love Tom Hanks me on the show in some way. that's your long game. you're like Chet, come on the show. it does seem like that. No Ched is so funny on the show and whenver we like bim Don't you feel like Tom Hinks, he's one of the funniest people alive. He's so funny in SNL, but he does these movies now and I love them, like Greyhound and Bridge of Sies, that he does like the dad movies now and I want him to be and you've got me, I want to be in something really funny. And so I'd love to have him on the show And we also love Ray Romano. Yeah. love He's great. I also just like crazy comedians like Tim Robinson. Yeah. I met him today at the brunch. name Rob. And I got so excited. I was like, I love you. I didn't say anything. I went. Yeah, but I know you literally did I watched you did And then I walked away because I not the same What's great about our show is that it sort of lends itself. We've kind of opened this world up to where anything's possible. You, Anybody could come on and do something fun for like a day. And we have so much fun on set that that's exactly what we're doing. you know Like this year, when we did the basketball game, and we had my brother and Speedman, and we had so much fun when we were doing that, you know So it's great. I'm sure we'll have a lot of people. Also and this is getting increasingly rare, we get to shoot in LA, which is so it's such a huge part of the show We just like if we can I just think getting actors to come here, we feel so proud to be able to shoot here. Our crew is incredible. And yeah, so we hope that we can kickstart a trend where more and more comedies are shot here. We've all been there as women in the arts and women in STEM Have you ever walked into a room and felt underestimated 'cause you're a woman? And how do you deal with that energy in the room and then overcome it? Wow, big shift show You let's bring up Michelle Obama I actually get, okay, this is gonna sound awful, but I get a little bit of a weird like hit off of when I can see when I'm pissing a guy off. Yeah. L I feel like I've had moments where I've sat and I've had to like stand up for myself with certain things, and you can just feel them hating it. And I fucking love it. Yeah. There's a part of me that's like, I don't know. I just when I see that and I say this not as a generalization because I work with a lot of great men and I've had a lot of great support from men, women. but there are just we all know them And those moments for me, when I know that I have a little bit of the upper hand and they fucking hate it, I'm like, I'm enjoying every second of this. It's not revenge. That's the only way I orgasm Sorry, okay, we took it too far. know, but do you know what I mean? Like Yeah there is a moment you know, I think a lot of times there's sort of like those kinds of people who like you know, they w to pull the wall over your eyes and you're sitting there and they think they're gonna sweet talk you or they think that they can make you feel a little bit like, oh, you should be doing it like this and then we're gonna kind of steamroll you a little bit. And I enjoy those moments when I'm like, nope I'm all jacked up right now. put me in the room. But that's how I feel. What about you? I know you're like you're simere, come on No, I'm like always at like a simmer. my rage is right under the surface. You're so pid. No, I feel like I feel so lucky. I have like the curve of my dreams, it's everything, but also the scrutiny that I face versus my contemporaries is like absolutely crazy. When I fail, I fail huge. And when my contemporaries fail, it's like a quiet little whatever. If a guy does a show with about a bunch of guys and it's really guy coded, it's considered like high art, but if I do a show with women talking about stuff, it's like, what a cute little trifle. somethingomething to watch as a guilty pleasure when you're on the treadmill. This is what's happening. Yeah, and then it's just a simmer. I also feel rageful when I'm trying to parallel a park a car and a man is like jumps in help you And they're just being friendly. and I'm like, I don't need this. And you you' ever been in rooms with some of the most powerful influential men in Hollywood? you've had a wonderful collaboration. your own, and we commend you for that. Thank you I never said commend before. That was crazy. Brenda, how about you? I'm the opposite. Nom no. Here's the thing that I feel as an Asian American woman in trying to get succeed in anything, and especially in this industry, I feel like you always walk in a room feeling underestimated, feeling like it's gonna be a no. And for me, it's always been about proving to myself my own self worth. And honestly, I say this all the time and I truly mean it. Being on this show is one of the first times I've been doing thisince I was three years old. I'm thirty eight This show has really has been one of the few places where I truly feel seen, heard, taken care of, and where I truly feel like I have a voice. And that's really rare. And this show, being with people like women like Kate and Mindy have really taught me to be unafraid to speak like to speak up, period. Because the truth is, like I'll be honest, there have been so many times in my career where people like, oh, why did you do that role? I was like, I'm just trying to work. you've got a say in it And that's what's really hard. They make you feel like you have to defend every choice that you make when you realize that you're just trying to survive. And being on this show has really helped me and really given me so much motivation to speak up for myself and to advocate for myself, and to take risks that I don't think I would have taken It's the truth, though. when I started this show, Kate said something amazing to me 'cause she she was starring in a show and also having an album come out. And we you werere talking about it, and she's like, you did this because for you, you didn't wantanna have any regrets, you didn't care. And she said it so casually, but it hit so hard for me ' I feel like I was always so afraid to do something because I was afraid to fail because as women, if we have a misstep, it's like a huge failure. We'll never get another shot. And so truly being with these women has inspired me so much to be more like them I a sew my hair That comes from the top down. that's from leadership. That's from having My. lucky The men that we work with on our Sh are feminists, right? L I think Dave have worked on some they were on the Mindy proroject for one hundred seventeen episodes. want they want to write stories about women, like demented women, but they think demented women should have a voice. and Scottty and all the guys here like there That's not always the case. like you do a movie and you know there's I don't,ate, you've done this reubbe been in callall she. There's a couple of guys who maybe aren't so happy about havingving it be that way. And that's this cast is incredible. The writers are incredible. And so we feel really supported by the men in our world. and that' I would say it's not as common as you would think. So we are so blessed. Also for you guys to get to this point in your career, you've had to do scary things. Like you haven't been comfortable. I know you all have done things that scared the hell out of you and that's how you became great. Do you have any advice for Paige when she's nervous I no P page, beta blockkeered out. She's fine.. But like we're in like this early part of our career. Th birth only thirty four were babies children. literild brides. We don't know what to do. We're doing a lot of things for the first time. that's really scary. When you're insecure doubting yourself, how do you overcome that, especially when you're in the public eye? In all seriousness, like there is no creative field that you can get into without having to be completely terrified of putting yourself out there. So if you're not going to do it, then you're probably not in the right business, right? So like if creatively, also, what's so fun about what we do is that everything's new, which means it should always feel a little bit like you kinetic and a little fearful and have those nerves. It's like anything that is a new idea, anything that's a new experience, every time you walk out here and you do something like this, it's going to be a completely different crowd. You never know what that is going to be. That's part of why we love doing it. But it's also like you have to risk the fall. If not, then it's just you got to get in like accounting or something. Like you know, you got to do something that's a aer for that My advice for you guys because I know you have a show that you're working on, which is going to be huge hit you are mere children, I know. So I hope this doesn't have kind ofstanding is when you're putting together the team for the show, which I know you're working on right now, it just has to be people that you're like, oh, that person is like obsessed with me in my voice, that director, that cast member, that writer, because it's so hard to make a show. There's so many heartbreaks. There's such a roller coaster. But like it's like dating someone. The people that you get in bed with, they can't be doing for the money or because of this and that or whatever. It's like when you leave it, you're like, when Ike and Dave Stasen came to be interviewed to be writers on the Mindy proroject. They came to my house. They were both in full suit. came They weren't these comedy writer slobs showing up after the gym because it was like a female fled show and they didn't care. They came in and there were these well raised Chicago guys who and they brought because the show had been picked up, they brought me flowers to congratulate me, right? These two straight men from Chicago came in three VCs because they wanted the gig. and they were like, and that takes a lot. So like my advice to you guys is you're so talented. You clearly have such an audience is when you are stopping. Stapping up for this show that'll be inevitable hit from guest star to director for anybody, like just get people who are obsessed with you, whichich will be. I love that She's like Yeah, I know. She's like, C my dad work? Yeah, I'm like I know the perfect showrunner And Brenda, you talked about being scared. I always say when you're scared to do something, you know change is about to happen and change can be scary. But I always say if you're not, if you don't want to make that leap, then you have to be okay with where your life is at. You know what this life is and if you want to keep living that way, great. He' like up In front of a planet fness withith his phone propped up on the dashboard and he's in a sleeveless shirt I literally we were like, what should we do for the show? And clearly we had no idea. And I was like, canan we get a video from Chut? And they were like, actuallyually, that's one thing we cant do. We love fashion, so we obviously wanted to show some of the favorite looks. And this is Mindy and Kate's favorite look they submitted. Can we discuss the dance routine and it was this process. How long did it take you to learn it? I didn't have much time and I haven't danced in a while, so like Chloe She learned the day. She literally learned it the day before and they come they're like, Okay, we're gonna show you the dance and they were like K can't do Kate is a scam artist.. She did that thing where she's like, guys, I don't know. I don't think I'll be able to get it. It's very complicated. And then just did that on like the second. you were dance comes you were a performer Yeah. I used to dance a lot and then of course, you know, you get older and you don't dance at all. And so kind of it's like riding a bike, it sort of comes back a little bit, But then you know, I look at it and I'm like, I got to go back to dance class. But it was so much fun. You know they that She's a triple threat That's what they say in the business in this town. It was fun. It was so great. But I really the best part was the outfit. It's so cute I just li short killed it. And you're glowing. You were like, this is where I meant to be. was We had so much fun. Also, this is me selfishly preparing for our show. When you're trying to remember your lines BeCause you can have new lines the day of. L are you guys quick with it or you like leave me alone in my trailer? Like what's your process? We're very nervous about remembering our lines. Hannah iss really nervous about it. I'm nervous.. Can I tell you guys, this is Kate Kate's like on a phone on a Faceime. She goes, I don't know what the scene is yet. Hold on. Okay, and then she'll get the whole entire scene. I don't know how she does it. I'm not kidding you. She does it all the time You just have you just memorize. I really I might have a little bit of I really actually have one of those weird I could learn a monologue. L if right now, if I had like about thirty and five minutes, I could probably do a monolog. This is anning She's like That wed comes easily to me. Yeah. I'm nots my legs my tes I It's like my bra I forget itly then your guys. There's nothing I get you not, we've been on set before where kids like, o, you're doing this sce.'re like, no, we're doing this scene. She goes, what? And she like's like, okay, well give me the signs. And she like sits there her while, they're like touching her up and she has it in her desk and And she's like. And then she like knows every single word. It's kind of insane So you never have to yell like lyine. Do people actually do that? I mean Paige, they did it with us.. We did something. I will say that here's a trick that I use that I love is the night before, I don't I read it, it's the last thing I do because are studies that if you read it, it repeats in your brain. it's the last thing. So I go over my sids. It's the very last thing I do when I fall asleep and I wake up and it's usually memorized. Wow. I have sex that night. Yeah. What if it goes like you read it Yeah, and then have sex No But then I have to go wash my face and get all I have to do a whole routine. have you makeup on when you have sex. No. these is the important question Thank you my name But even you do, I can't just like roll I have a like it' you don't roll over and go right to bed. Because I like obious I I'm not a good sleeper. I'm not good sleeper. I. She's like I then I have my rolling TV. I can't I a rolling TV. I need a rolling TV. Yeah I don't we have a rolling TV. when you're havingx Yeah. We'll talk after about routine after you redra sex and go to bed. No, I just wonder if he needs to imprint on you and then you just nothing has to go straight to sleep. I think it was so much easier for me to know my lines when I was on the Mindy project than I was on the office. because I'd be waiting all day for my one line and the pressure's on and you're like, I'm gonna mess this up. 'cause we've seen this sometimes we'll have like a guest stars to come on and somehow it's harder to know you're lying on the spot because you're like, I don't wantan to blow it. But then when you have a ton of lines, you get into the zone where yeah, it would be great. I've been like auditioning a little and every now and then I'll just get one line audition I overthink that one line so bad. I'm doing different. I'm like, that's not how people say that word. I forget how words were. So's like when you're on mushrooms and like there's a word and you're like, I think I think it's popsicle Is that the word popsicle? And in your mind, you're like, no, it's not Our favorite looks from the show, Brenda's giving hannah coated. Yeah. I thought that was me. I thought that was me on the right. We love a tie. I joked that when you wear a tie. you feel powerful. like you can't help it. You feel like you have a dick. You know what I mean? Like I know how it feels to just have something swinging I start talking to people different, I'm like what I start explaining things and stuff. She fires me. When I wear t, and I wear a tie when I was doing my standup tour and I walk on stage I think more women should wear ties. And they excited. And the funny is these are joke that because I would tie my own ties and all the boys in the show would need their dresser to do their ties. and I'm like, what This makes no sense. And these guys like I know how to tie a tie. I just don't want to. I was like, Well, you lazy ass? tie your own tie. Men. And then you I feel like you had such good looks the whole season, but I love when you're in like a monochromatic just like, I'm coming in to fuck itit up. I was very monochromatic. I like the monochromatic. I loved that too, although it was hard to wear. Yeah, remember ' it was a bodysuit. this. I had to tuck it in a couple of times. It was hard And it kept coming up and it was hard to get my mic Okay, back to advice for us. I reach so many questions. I didn't actually run this by you, so this is a hard question, but like you guys have been acting for a while. What's your kind of most like embarrassing mistake or moment that you've had on set? 'causeuse whatever it is, I feel like I'm gonna do it. I feel like it's gonna be with a toilet. That's what Don't put it in the atmosphere. The trailers that's stressful. Trailers are stressful. Oh you mean being in a trailer on set Yeah, 'use I get nervous tummies. I've never said tummies before. I was just looking at Kate Hudson in the eye and I freaked out. You didn't want to tell Kate Hudson, you share your pants all the time. Before I go on stage she shit herself at thead Normal thing. Where's Prada Premiere ach No, she didn't. She drank whole milk a couple hours earlier. trying to poison me with a laat t. Hold on. So at the bathroom at the AMC or wherever were the prmers?. I wish we were at the AMC.. We were at Lincoln's Center. o. We were the real premiere. She broke the toilet at Lincoln's Center. She literally sharted and it lay. when you I was holding it in the whole carpet, I was like And then I got to like the party area. Heidi Klumom looked at me and she didn't tell me u til the end of the night 'cause she didn't want to ruin my time That's a good friend. Pa, what are like things I should look out for ts of In terms of professionalism, like, what could I do that? Be like We'll never work with her again in this town. Okay, it's for real. Listen, Mindy wants me to make out with every single person. She's like, you're going to have sex with a lot I TV Is the rule like show sad Is the rule? There are no rules in this business. Brenda, what's your advice based on a really traumatic time Okay, so when I think about an or like the most like embarrassing thing that's there I mean, I mean, I've done I mean, I had my first kiss in real life on set, like when I was sixteen, ye, on the sweet life. I had my first Oh my gosh. Yeahter child act Selter K is like so sad shhelter child actor. But I will say so the I think my most embarrassing moment is When you do a sitcom, they always, in the beginning of a show, because we're doing in front of live audience, they introduce the cast. So everyone runs out, we wave, and we stand off to the side. When I did this weeeetl, we did two iterations. We did like almost two hundred episodes of the show. Like I always did in high heels and like came out nothing. The very, very, very last episode, the very it's at the end. We're all crying. and I'd already wrapped up was in my slippers and I was like, okay, whatever. We go out. I'm like my last one I slip like it's a banana's on the floor straight up on my back while I'm crying. I'm like, and I literally just lay there because I don't know what to do That's traumatic. My most traumatic and I literally still have like fever dreams about it. because it's the so No, that's a scaryar slippers and run on a set. But I feel like it made you funny.
