You can go f to yourself Hey everyone! Welcome to Go Fact to Yself, the show where we quiz the smartest people we know and find out why they love what they love. I'm Helen Hong. Thank you. And now from the Crawford at LAS in Pasadena, here's our moderator JK Van Stratten. He Ebody Hello everyone. Hello Helen. Hello, J Kef. I should say welcome back, Helen. you were back from your travels abroad. I am. I actually came back early to be here with you from a family trip to Korea. Yes, I went with my whole family, my parents, my sister, my nephew. Snephew, by the way, is now five years old and he's peak, gorgeous too the point where every like all the old ladies in Korea would stop us to comment how gorgeous he is. And there was one Korean lady who gave him ten thousand w, which is the equivalent of one dollar And I joed my sister, I was like, Can you imagine being so good looking that strangers on the street will offer you cash money I don't have to imagine him. I'm sure he's also a good person Sure. As good as a five year old can be. All right. Ellen Hong, everybody. Well today go fact yourself, two guests will compete to answer questions about facts they know, facts they may not know, and frankly, facts they should know. Plus, we'll meet actual experts on two very different topics. And finally, we'll declare one of our guests the winner of today's show. Let's get started and meet today's guest, Helen, who do we have playing tonight? He is an award winning podcaster, producer, and singer songwriter whose new album in The Last Hour of Light is available now. And she is an award winning actor and producer who can be seen in the audacity on AMC. It's Rishi Kish Hereway and Meghan Rack Reisha G from Megan. Hello Rachie and hello, Meghgan. Nice to see you both. Well, Rachie, you are known for your awward winning podcast song Exploder, which also became a show on Netflix. You of course interview musicians, you break down the creative process behind their songs. I understand that actually had a big impact on your new album called In The Last Hour of Light. Yeah. I think that just by talking to musicians all the time about their own creative process It helped me personal level because I started that show When I had run into Writer's block myself, I hadd been making music for over a decade and then put out an album and just kind of lost my way U and felt like I figure out how to get to the next level. And I started making Song Explod, in the meantime to try and have a creative outlet while I search for a way to get back to music U and it took a long time But I think by learning all these lessons from people about how they made their music, it taught me an important lesson, which was that there is no one way of making music. I think that was one of the reasons why I had Writers's block because I was looking for what was I doing wrong and the right thing to do? And it turns out everybody's just making it up as they go along. Really? Everybody. Everybody. Good, not just me. I'm very, very relieved. And in fact, you felt stuck again going into making this album, but you actually got some writers's prompts from one of your previous guests. Yeah, that's right. When I was going to do a songwriting residency in Texas, I was going to spend a week just working on music. and I'd never done that. And I was so scared of going there and wandering my time that I started asking other people for homework assignments basically. And one of the people I asked was Sam Beam from Iron and Wine And he gave me some homework. He gave me a couple of songwriting prompts. and one of them was describe a street you grew up on from the point of view of a stray dog. and I loved it so much and it sparked something so immediately that I ended up writing a song that day before I actually ever left for the residency. So it was good in that it worked, but it was bad in that I didn't then have anything left for it to say for the for the week. but It was very exciting. and then later when I recorded that song, he sings on it as well. That's lovely. What a general fun exercise to do Yeah. Well, I think it's great because part of what you do is sort of demystify the creative process. L there are people who have been super prolific, but also just sometimes need a little nudge. Yeah. I think that for me the hope was, I think probably I was just looking for this for myself, was to try and talk to artists about like the real work of making music, which is not necessarily glamorous. It's just about these small creative decisions and technical obstacles and just problem solving that you have to do. I'm so curious about this song now, wasas part of it like the best bush to pee on? Yeah I can't wait to hear it. B the album, I think that's the answer is by the album. And now Megan, on the Audacity, you play Anushka Batereresha fister. Is that correct? Anushka Batachera fister? Yeah I was We love a hyphenated name on. And that character is the chief ethics officer for a Silicon Valley tech company. So you're basically doing nothing Yes, Thank you. Thankk you. And you have a different accent than you have now. I do, yes. She is an English woman But yes, yeah, the job of an ethicist at a tech company is a real job and also sort of a joke a little bit. But that's, you know, the character tries genuinely to do the right thing, but of course, is corrupted by money. And you to describe that character, you've called her a chameleon? Yeah, yeah. Jonathan Glasszer, he created the show. He's just incredible at creating these characters were very nuanced And you know, my character is a chief ethicist and wants to do good is, you know, having an affair, but she values loyalty and she You know, always sides with money. So she she's full of these contradictions. and she's the kind of person who, I mean, you mentioned her accent. She's probably had like four or five different accents in her life and sort of is the kind of person who changes herself is an expert code switcher As a matter of survival, but can change herself to suit whoever she's speaking to. Well, you mentioned that you're playing someone who is British. you are married to someone who is British. Did your husband help with that accent or give a little quality control? Yeah,, but I've been making fun of him forever. so it came pretty naturally. No, he did. He helped so much. I actually I worked with a dialect coach in pre production Susan Hagerty, who was so incredible and really helped me. And then Jack sort of took over while we were in production. It's just nice to have somebody on hand who you can call and be like, because they're constantly rewriting. And so to be able to call someone and be like, can you just say this for me really quick? And that's why you should get married. I think that'. Well we're gonna to chat with you two more a little bit later, but we did ask you to provide us with a few topics outside your field of work that you know and love Richie for you, you said that was the nineteen eighty five eighty six Boston Celtics, the best ice cream in Los Angeles, and nineteen nineties Caper movies adapted from Elmore Leonard novels Whereas Megan, you went a little more mainstream, The movie The Little Mermaid, The TV show Survivor, and traraining a Labradoodle Which I think would be a great ice cream flavor. Later on, we're going ask each of you some in depth trivia questions about one of those topics. But first we're going to get your thoughts on something you might know nothing about. It is time to split some hairs with our what's the difference round? We'll have one question for each of you, each worth up to two points, and of course the other person does have a chance to steal. today Deep Fake. First up in Dep fake is Rishy with Dep. Rishy, your question comes from a listener. whoo is it, Hllen? It's from Pam Kchka of Lton, Colorado. Listeners, if you'd like to submit a suggestion for our What's the difference round, go to gofactyourpod dot com and click on get involved. Rishy Pam asks, while they both can be really deep, what's the difference geologically between a gorge and a canyon A gorge and a canyon. I think gorges they're just prettier, which is why we get the word gorgeous. Okay, that's. I didn't know. Yeah Anything you'd like to add other than that fantastic joke. Yeah, and as we know, beauty is only skin deep, so I will say that the gorge is deeper. The gorge is deeper than the canyon. All right, we don't know yet ifishi is entirely correct. I think he thinks he's not. Meggan, anything you'd like to add or change Yeah, I feel like a good A gorge is more precarious and feels less intentional. Less intentional. Yeah. Be I don't think you can build houses in a gorge. Right. But in a canon canon. Yeah. Go right ahead. Go right ahead. All right That's a much better answer than I should. I mean, I'm no song wrriter. All right, well, I cannot believe how long this segment is going. Let's go to Hell and Wong at the judges table for the facts. Here are the facts. Geologically speaking, a gorge tends to be shaped like the letter V Narrow coming down to a point at the bottom with nearly vertical sides. A canyon tends to be shaped more like the letter U Wider with a flatter bottom and stepped sides. It's also usually much older and larger than a gorge. That's right. In fact, a canyon is often so much larger that you can have a gorge within a canyon. In two thousand two, in Texas, a flooding event created the new Canyon Lake Gorge within the Guadalupe River Canyyon And the newly exposed rock is filled with fossils and dinosaur footprints. And I hear it Gorgeous. All right, Helen, how did our guests do? You know, as much as I love the prettier slash gorgeous Nah. neeither of you got a point on that. This is reminding me of my gym routine though. I'm currently more canyon flat bottomed and U shaped and I'm trying to someday be a gorge more like the I believe that is what people mean when they're working out and trying to get that V. Exactly. Yes. All right. Well, up next and deep fake is Megan with fake, Megan, while both can get you into deep trouble. What's the difference between a forgery and a counterfeit a forgery and a counterfeit. I would say that a forgery has more to do with a signature. Okay And a counterfeit is a replica of a thing, a knockoff, if you will I'm sorry I was waiting for pun again but I guess's not to happen. It's not happen. We've got Megan's answer we don't yet she's entirely correct. Would she anything you'd like to add or change? I think maybe a forgery is more specific in the thing that it's trying to imitate. A counterfeit could is maybe more general and a forgery is a specific thing. likeike you could have a counterfeit b But that could be any bill, but a forgery is you know, a specific painting or a specific signature, maybe. All right, well, this segment is getting real, real boring. Let's go to Helen Hong at the judge's table for the facts. Here are the facts. A forgery is when a genuine document is unlawfully altered by adding false information leg dates or signatures. A counterfeit is when any object, document or otherwise, is copied or unlawfully made from scratch. That's right. so a fake artwork even made from scratch is called a forgery, when by definition it should be called a counterfeit, although perhaps the dictionary we use to research this was a forgery. Helen, how did our guests do? You know, I think Megan, you got both points because you said a forgery is more signature and the counterfeit is more a replica So yeah, two points for Mgan. Two points for Mgan, very nice. So much. Well let's get to know our guests a little bit better. We should catch your way. Your credits include producing and hosting the award winning podcast Home Cooking, The West Wing Weekly and Song Explodr, also a Netflix show. You've given a TED talk, you've been honored by South byy Southwest this year, and you've released several albums under the names the O AM, Radio and Mooors, and your new album under your own name in The Last Hour of Light is available now full length release you've done under your own name. How has that been different for you? It felt personal in terms of the songwriting and so it felt like it was the right thing to do. And also it had been fifteen years since the last thing I'd put out as the one A Radio It feeleels good. I also feel like it feels more honest. More honest. Yeah. Lovely. Well, on Song Exploder, you interview artists about one particular song. You get very granular. Vulture actually called Song Exploder probably the best use of the podcast format ever. We'll agree to disagree on that for now. But you've had some incredible guests from Yooma, Lyn Manuel, Miranda, Lizzo, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Fleetwood, Mac, Billy Eilish, YouTube, Metallica Was there a guest whose appearance kind of opened the floodgates for other guests? An unusual thing happened. I interviewed the band Spoon and I sent it to their publicist. I had managed to get it through a friend who worked at the label This was in the first year of the show. And then I sent it to the publicist to say like, You know this is what the show is and I'd love to work with other artists of yours if there's ever the chance. And I never heard anything for six months. This sounds very familiar to how we book this show. Yes. And then and then six months later, I did get an email back and she said, Well, sorry, it took me so long. I just started working with a new band, wouldould you like to have you two on Wow I've never heard of them. Yeah. And so that once you had you two on, people realized this is an okay place for me to talk about my process. Yeah, I feel like that changed things. Were they cool? Very cool. Probably the coolest, right? Very cool. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, well, Megan, Rath, you are known for your regular roles on shows like Hawaii F O, Being Human, Children Ruin Everything, and now on The Audacity, which recently premiered, but has already been renewed for a second season. Congratulations Well, on the Audacity, you co star with Billy Magnuson, Sarah Goldberg, Rob Cordy, Zach Gallalainakis, Simon Helberg, a lot of very funny people. But the show was created by someone who had written on Succession and Better Call Saul, which are known for being very tightly scripted. Is there room for improv on the Audacity? Yeah, I mean, weirdly, Jonathan is not precious about his words and his dialogue. He is, as I said, always rewriting But he's such an admirer of an advocate for actors. and so gives everybody sort of the freedom and you know space to add whatever they want to add. But honestly, there's not much to do because he is such an incredible writer and there's truly nothing that anyone could come up with that would be better than what he wrote. I actually was sent a list of spoilers by the publicist for the show of things to avoid talking about Let's go through them. I understand episode ten. No Is that challenging for you to keep those secrets cause I know what they are. They're obvious. You're good at that. Yeah. Well last thing I want to ask you about we mentioned your husband, you actually got married during the pandemic and you did not have a traditional wedding because of that. Tell us about what you did. Well, I've been married three times to the same man.. But so we had we had our wedding planned in May of twenty twenty, which obviously didn't happened up eloping in our treehouse with a few A few people, one of which is here now, hi, David. so we had that but we actually couldn't get a marriage license because nothing was open. But we celebrate that day. like for all intents and purposes, that's our anniversary. But then we went in September to Big Sir and we were able to get a marriage license there and so got married in the The Redwoods. And then we finally had our actual wedding, which we paid for and had to have and Or else we would lose all our money. But that was like a year later, we had a baby by that point. I mean, my dress didn't fit me. So that was our third and final wedding. Third and final.re you're not gonna have a fourth. No, not to him. Wow. We always learn a lot from our guests here on G For St. Risha Kase your wayake and me and Rp All right, Helen, what is our score going into the break? At the end of that round, Rishi Kish Hirway has zero points, and Meghgan Rath has two points. But those scores are bound to change as we move on to questions about topics our guests have chosen for themselves. That's all ahe when we come back on Go FactorZ Helen, we got a jumbotron. Woo. Jackie and Laurie Show on maximumfun dot org dot bye Welcome back to Go Fact Yourself with our guests, Rishi Kish Herewe and Meghgan Rath. Once again, here's Jakeie Vetrot. Thank you, Helen. thank you everybody. All right, Rishi, of your many interests, you told us that you know and love the nineteen eighty five eighty six Boston Celtics, the best ice cream in Los Angeles, and nineteen nineties Caper movies adapted from Elmore Leonard novels. Let's find out a little bit more about each of those. First, tell us why you know and love the nineteen eighty five eighty six Boston Celtics This was the year that the Celtics won the championship. It was the sweet sixteen. There were a sixteenth championship and it was a very, very big deal. I was six when they started the season. and and I remember being seven and watching the championship. It was just I felt like everybody was absolutely glued to the TV during that whole championship run And it was very exciting. and I feel like it It' helped spark my love of basketball Very cool. Well, next, tell us why you know and love the best ice cream in Los Angeles. I mean, I love ice cream anywhere. I just happen to live in Los Angeles. so that's the ones that are most accessible to me. But I feel like I've sampled all of it. And it feels like well, also I'm not someone who goes to bars. so when I want to go hang out with friends, I usually try them into something and going to get ice cream is pretty easy to say yes to. Oh wow. Do you stand around and like nurse your vanilla and go Hey man, I know, right? The worst. Yeah That's exactly it. Yeah, guys, we can grow out with ice cream.. You tap the ice cream ndor and go, Hey, I'll have another one.. You've had many. I'm not driving. if it's a crazy night. All right, and then finally tell us why you know and love nineteen nineties Caper movies adapted from Elmore Landard novels You know, I started watching these movies, not realizing originally that they were all connected in this way. And then I was like, wait, so many of my favorite movies have this shared DNA. And I think this sort of Cer heisty romance comedy combination. It's just my it's my favorite genre of movie. It's One of the reasons why I fell love with movies is is part of the reason why I moved to L.A to make music for movies. the scores and the The soundtracks in those films are just impeccable and I could watch any one of those on any day of the week. All right, Well to summarize, you said, you know and love the nineteen eighty five eighty six Boston Celtics, the best ice cream in Los Angeles and nineteen nineties Caper movies adapted from Elmore Leonard novels. todayoday we want to quiz you about nineteen nineties Cambridge movies areapted from Elmore Leonard novels. Okay. For those who aren't familiar, what are those movies that are in this category? Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, out of sight. All right, thoseose are some great ones. And How did you learn that they were all connected to Elmore Leonard novels? Because I didn't know that until today. Yeah, I mean I think I've watched them all probably four times, you know and at a certain point, you start paying attention to the credits. go, this Elmward Lemard guide, huh? And have you read the novels on which these are based? I haven't, I haven't. These movies taught me the magic of not reading. Something we definitely support on public radio. All right Well just ahead, we're gonna to enlist the help of a bonafide expert in your topic rege with our expert level question worth up to three points. But before that, to let you show your love, here are five trivia questions about your topic, each worth one point. If you want it, you're leted a hint for need two of these five questions Now Megan, do listen closely because if Rishi answers incorrectly, you could steal. By the way, Meghgan, how much do you know about nineteen nineties Caper movies adapted from Elmore Leonard novels? Zero. All right. Rishie, let's see how you do and if you give Megan that chance to prove it. Here iss question number one. off the three movies that fit your category out of sight, Jackie Brown and Get Shorty Only one of them stars the person who caused the creation of Google Images after Google was deluged by searches for her very revealing Versace dress at the two thousand Grammy Awards. Who is this multi talent from the block Jennifer Lopez. Ellen. That is correct. We're on our way, veryy nice. Fun fact, Jennifer Lopez's character, Karen Cisko was so popular that she got her own TV show called Karen Cisko, where she was played by Carla Guino. And searches for the photo of Jayo in that dress were so popular that Google had to create Google image search in response to all the queries, text just didn't do it justice. All right, here's question number two All three of these movies had powerhouse directors, known for both their artistry and box office hits. Who is any one of them Stephen Sootderberg. Helen. That is correct. That is correct. Very nice You did pay attention to the credits eually. Yeah. Yes, of course, Steven Soerberg directed outut of sight, Quintin Tarantino, Jackie Brown, Barry Soonenfeld, getet Shorty. Fun fact, since these movies, Stehven Soderberg was set to produce a film adaptation of another Elmore Leonard book, Tishom Mingo Blues, but it never happened. Barry Soonenfeld was a guest on episode one hundred sixty one of Go Factor Hselflf and Quintin Tarantino, who could know? You're two for two, Rishy, Here's question number three The movie Jackie Brown takes place primarily in California, but the novel that that movie is based on, Rum punch does not. Which state is the main setting for Rum Punch, a state where parts of out of sight and getet Shorty also take place Florida, Helen? It is Florida. That' nice Fun fact, both out of sight and getet Sorty have scenes that take place in Miami, as do several other works of Elmore Leonard. He also contributed a chapter to a novel published by the Miami Herald called Naked Came the Manatee. You are three for three, here's question four, you do still have your hints available Elmar Leonard's universe contains many recurring characters throughout his books and film adaptations, but which one of the following characters from his nineteen nineties Kaper movies does not show up in any other Elmmer Leonard novel or movie Is it? out of sights Jack Foley, out of sights Ray Nicolette? Get Shorty's Chillie Palmer, Get Shorty's Doris Saffron, or Jackie Brown's Louis Guera. I know that Ray Ray Nicolltte, Michael Keaton's character does appear in both Jackie Brown and out of sight. I think that there was maybe a Another get shorty Uh Chili Palmer story somewhere along there. so I don't think it's Chili Palmer. Helen, could I please have the hand? Helen, how about that first hand? Louis Gara. was in another Elmore Leonard work Oh, right? because Bridgiafonda is always saying Louis.. So I think it's Dor Sffron. I'm gonna to go throughor Sffron. Ellen. That is correct. That is correct. Very nicely deduced Fun fact, Jack Foley is in out of sight, played by George Clooney and the novel Road Dogs. Ray Nicolette is played by Michael Keaton in both Out of sight and Jackie Brown. Chilly Palmer is played by John Travolta in Get Shorty and Be Cool, its sequel. Louis or Louis Guera or Gara is played by Robert De Nio in Jackie Brown and by John Hawks in twenty thirteen's Life of Crime Dora Saffron is only in get shorty, and in the movie, she's played in a memorable scene by an unbilled Bet middler Oh We love our Bet Midler here. All right, Raca, you are four for four. You have a chance to go five for five if you can get this question correct. You do still have a hint available.. These three movies collectively earned three Academy Award nominations. What are any two of the categories for which they were nominated? Um believe was out of sight nominated for best B editing That's one. That's one. Okaykay, I'm gonna go for that one. I go with that. I also I'll stick with out of sight. I think maybe it was also nominated for Best Adapted sccreenplay Helen, That is correct. Thisy is five to s. Very nice. I't even need the w. Wow, we thought that was the hardest one. Fun fact, Scott Frank was nominated for his adapted screenplay for O of sight. And V Coatates was nominated for editing outut of sight. The wonderful Robert Forster was nominated for Best Spporting Actor for Jackie Brown. Bonus fun fact Even though none of them won these awards, Robert Forster did win the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for the role. Scott Frank won two Emmys for the Queen's Gambit, and Anvy Coates won the Oscar for editing Lawrence of Arabia. All right, you obviously did very well in that ressue, but now here is your expert level question that requires multiple answers. It is time for your cluster facts We'll be bringing on an expert to discuss your response. In nineteen ninety seven's Jackie Brown, the Caper is so complicated that Jackie has a trial run of a money exchange with a so called country girl, a nineteen year old woman or Deell met at a bus stop named Shiranda. And since the setting was moved from Florida, as we mentioned, that mall where this exchange takes place is one of three southern California destinations related to Shiranda So for up to three points, in what open area of the Delamo Fashion Center Mall in Torrrenance, California, does the trial run of the money exchange with Shiranda take place? Next, in what Los Angeles area city does Ordell have a home where he puts Shiranda up And in what starry Los Angeles neighborhood Dordell tells Sheranda this home is Okay I think I only know one of those. Well, let's start with that one, maybe. Okay. The first answer, I believe is the food court of the Dalama Mall. The second, the place where he puts her up, I think is maybe Torce. And then I think he tells her that it's Bellair, but I don't know. All right, well, Helen is taking note of those answers. We've an expert on hand who can tell us for sure. Helen, who do we have tonight? Joining us tonight is a peabody award winning actor and director who starred in several productions on Broadway, TV and films, including As Shonda in Jackie Brown. It's Lisa Gay Hamilton. Lisa Gay Hamilton, everybody Eoyira, Lisa Gay. Were actually gettingiv a standing omvation to Lisa Gay she comes in, how nice. Lisa Gay Thank you so much for being here. Wnder to see you. Well Lisa Gay, my goodness, you have a BFA from Tish, an MFA from Jilliard. You've been on Broadway, you've won two Obie Awards, won a peeabody for your documentary. People have seen you on TV in over one hundred episodes of The Practice, for which you were nominated for three SG Aards. You've had recurring roles on shows like Men of a Certain age Winning Time, the Lincoln Lwyer and currently on Will Trent. You've been in films including the classic Crush Groove Reversal of Fortune Twelve Monkeys, and have worked with directors including Terry Gilliam, Clint Eastwood, and of course, Quentin Tarantino in Jackie Brown. You're the real deal. The real deal. That's impressive. Why can't I get a job now? Well, I wanted to ask you because when I spoke with you yesterday, you still refer to yourself as a struggling actor. Without question. Are you still putting yourself on tape? Of course. Oh my God. life. Oh my Godd. Well, you were an LA native and you studied in New York City. you did lots of theater there. What brought you back here to Los Angeles? The practice did. The practice did. I had no intention. I didn't really think of film and television I really just thought mostly of theater, and so I was surprised to Get a pilot that was called a prractice and it lasted for seven years. Wow. That's pretty good. It's so good, and you're so great in it Well, let's talk about Jackie Brown. Tell us about where you were in your life and your career when that opportunity came along. I just remember the audition because the character had to eat So I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I ate in the audition So I had a pair I just ate the pear while I was saying the lines. Maybe that's why I got the job. I don't know. Wait that's what I did. And I was really just starting out. ' that's nineteen ninety seven seven. Yeah. How old were you when you got that role? Now see, that's rude.. That's why I gave Helen that question to answer Suffice to say you were the. You were very, very you still are. Yeah, right. What was it like auditioning for Quentin Tarantina? It was really quite nerve wracking and scary, but I loved working with him. It was a blast. Yeah. Well, you were in scenes with Pam Greer with Samuel L. Jackson, with Robert Forster I'm going to interrupt you. Okay. I was not in a scene with Samuel L. Jackson. That wasn't you in the No No everyone thinks that's me at the end of the movie'sy, I'm learning. Tell us about that. All I can say is that wasn't me. That's so interesting because I just watched it again the other day and all the research I did refers to that scene and him call him saying something about repugnant and all thatbody else That was somebody else. Some of the. Y big scene was at the mall. That's right. Okay, well then let me ask you this. Okay You got to work with the wonderful Pam Greer. What comes to mind when you think about her Breaking up with a boyfriend at the time, and she gave me this wonderful book about breakups. It was so sweet. I really appreciateated it. Okay, that's great. she was wonderful, justust wonderful. And on the DVD, there's actually an extended version of the scene that you have there. I know that. Oh, okay, yeah, ommend I recommend watching it. You want to research yourself I I should. That goes to my real. I have no idea. What do you remember about shooting that scene and what that was like working with Quentin there I just really remember working with Quentin and he was just a blast. He liked to play And so you say o, okay, okay, let's do this way., Let's it this way, let's it this way And I had just a blast as an actor and it' just starting out. J to play around was really, very cool. Did your Juilliard training come into play? Not at all Of course it did, of course it did. In what way, I'm actually curious about that. Oh just accessibility, just learning how to transform and how to become a character. I think Everything about my good old alma Marta you know trained me and prepared me for the acting. Were you starstuck when you got on stage and were you like, hh, it's really. withith Pam I just admired her so, but she's a wonderful actress. And so it was two actors playing. And so I really appreciated that. Well, you did get to end up eating in that scene. And there it was a Mexican cuisine. What do you remember about that experience? It was a lot of food. Yeah. becausecause I really had to eat. I really had to eat it. And I don't remember having a bark bag on the side. I could have had But I don't remember. A lot of actors have a spit bucket. Yep. ye.. you were like, no. and you were like totally method. Totally That's the Juilliard way. Yes. We do not spit at Jilliard.act. We mentioned that there was a documentary for which you won a peabody and I was so curious to find out that actually started because of a relationship that you formed on the set of a movie. Yes, I was doing Jonathan Demi's Boved And I got to meet Beia Richards and she playedab baby Sugs, if you're familiar with Beloved And she was an extraordinary human being. She was a political activist a writer, a director, a dancer, a teacher, and was very much affiliated not a communist, but affiliated with members of the Communist Party. So her she knew Paul Robeson, she knew Duuboise. She had this extraordinary life Um someomehow or other through the money Jonathan Demmy. And his' encouraging whenom did a documentary on her. Because she was a pioneering black woman actor. Yes, very much. Which you are as well.. Did you direct it or produce? I directed it. Oh wow. Were you intimidated to direct a project like that Well It was sort of like this where you're asking BeiaQions. And she was such an extraordinary woman that she I believe she really directed the film because I would ask her a question. She would choose not to answer that question, but answer something else. Yeah. And so the film was allowed to just everywhere. And did she interrupt your questions to tell you that you were wrong? No. Okay last thing I want to ask you about, you are from Los Angeles. I've seen in interviews you say that your favorite food is ice cream.. What is your favorite ice cream in L.A Gingers, haveave you eaten at Gingerss yet? I haven't. Oh, but I've seen it on the lists of, you know, best. And they have a burnt sugar lavender flavor That's kicking All right. nextext time you want to bow out. know where Lisa Gase is to go. Yeah. Once again, here's J Kie Van Strattten. Thank you, Hell, Thankk you everybody All right, Megan, O of your many interests, you told us that you know in love the movie The Little Mermaid, the TV show Survivor, and traraining a Labrdoodle. Let's find out a little bit more about each of those adorable topics. First, tell us why you know in love The Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid is a movie that I connected with, obviously very young. There was a few summers where I watched it every single day. I pretended I was a mermaid I In my life have gotten three black eyes From swimming in a pool pretending I was a mermaid. I don't remember it's a movie W. Yeah. wait so you're like you're like, I have a tail. I have a. Yeah. everyvery time. Yes. That is dedication. All right, next, tell us why you know and love the TV show Survivor. Well, Survivor, I've watched seasons of it throughout the years, but probably during the pandemic, actually my husband and I watched Every single episode from every season, there's been fifty seasons You've probably seen a lot of them twice. I'm embarrassed to say. That is like thousands of hours of television. I said I'm embarrassed to say. Well we celebrate all knowledge equally here. And what do you think you love about it so much? I love the characters on the show. It's such an interesting personality study and also Well I'm just fascinated with the gameplay. It's really like it's not to brag. It's a smart person's game show. Yeah. But yeah, no, and I find it really interesting the way the game has evolved from, you know fififty seasons ago till now. There are people who have fully grown up watching the game who are now playing the game yeah, it's a wonderful show. Wonderful. And then finally tell us why you know in love training a Labradoodle. Well, I have two Labradoodles. whoose names are Bug and squid. adorable Just other creatures I've always loved laboroodles, but the dog trining came into play. my oldest dog is thirteen now. Oh. And actually while I was doing Hawaii F five out, he would always come with me to every set that I've been on since I've had him. And when we were doing five O, he got really, really protective of me. And he started he became a little bit aggressive. And I had to on the show, we had a drug dog as one of the characters on the show. and I was talking to the trainer of that dog and I was telling her about the issues I was having with him. and she referred me to a trainer here in LA. a behaviorist Wh sort of opened my eyes to what it was to train a dog and to make a dog feel secure. And then it's sort of become a bit of a passion, mine. Lovely. And now your dogs can detect cocaine. Yeah. Wow. It's great. They bring it right to me. Excellent. Well done. Well done. I hear barking I don't know what's happening now. All right, well, to summarize Meghgan you said you know and love the movie Theittle Mermaid, the TV show sururvivor, and training a Labrdoodle. Today we want to quizz you about Survivor I think we have some fans here as well. ever wouldould you ever apply to be a contestant on sururvivor? I would love to say yes, but I do think the reality is I'd be voted out immediately because while my social game is probably great, I do get hgry real quick I think people would just be fed up with me. So they would catch you trying to sneak a quarter poundnder would be the one that would be eating moreore than my share of rice and coconut. Yeah. And of all the seasons that you've watched multiple times, do you have a favorite I love heroes versus villains. I think that's one of the greats. Just ahead, we're going to list the help of a bonafide expert in your topic of survivor with a question worth up to three points. But before that, to let you show your love even more, here are five trivia questions about the topic each worth one point. If you want it, you're allowed to hit for two of these five questions. Now Rishie, do listen closely because if Meghgan answers incorrectly, you could steal. byy the way, Rishi, how much do you know about the TV show sururvivor se an episode. All right, so this would be your Elmore Leonard hers for Isy. All right, here is question number one. Since its first season in two thousand, Survivor has been a ratings winner for what network, which has also been home to other cutthroat competitions like Big Brother, The Price is R and Hawaii five O. CBS. No, That is correct. That is correct, very good Fun fact, in its first season, Survivor was the number one show of the year with over fifty million viewers watching the often naked Richard Hatch winning the finale. Naked cameame the Richard Hatch. All right, here's question number two. To be the winner on Survivor and be awarded the one million dollars prize means that you outwitted and outplayed your opponents, leaving you as the final contestant remaining A much more succinct way of putting that is the show's slogan out wit, out play, what Outlast. Ellen. That is correct. That is correct. two for two Fun fact, not everyone can outlast, Pod Save America host John Loveitt was the first person voted off in season forty seven, and he talked about it when he was a guest on episode one hundred eighty three of Go Factor itself. Bonus fun fact, The Burlington Public Library in Ontario, Canada put together a reading list for fans of Survivor. It includes the book Survivor by show prodroducer creator Mark Burnett Pus, Lord of the Fies and the business book surrounded by idiots You're two for two, Megan, here's question number three Since twenty sixteen, Survivor has taken place on the Mamanua Islands in Fiji. Before that, it visited many other exotic locales, but which one of the following has not been a setting for the American version of Survivor. Is it Australia Borneo, China, Zimbabwe, or the island of Nukahiva in the Marquesas islands of French Polynesia. Zimbabwe? Helen? That is correct. That is correct You really have watched every season I'm so nervous right now. Oh you're doing so great. You're nervous. You're killing it. Yeah. Fun fact, Survivor has also taken place in Cambodia, Nicaragua, Philippines, Samoa, Brazil, Thailand, and Kenya, among many others. Survivor has been to five continents, but never to Europe, or for some reason Antarctica. You're three for three here's Quion four, you do still have your hints available Many seasons of sururvivor have the contestants forming an alliance to survive, but few are as memorable as the all female one known as the Black Widow Brigade, which mowed down unsuspecting male players. Who are any two of the five players in the Black Widow Brigade? Um Gerry? Okay? Parvvety. Okay. Gerry in Parvty. Yeah. Helen? That is not correct. Not entirely correct. No, Rish you with a chance to steal. Here's your chance. Stehven Fishback. Helen is it Stephven Fishback? Good try Let know. No. And who is Stehven Fishback? He's a friend of mine who was on Survivor. Oh, okay.... You did. He's amazing. Great. So you do know something about sururvivor. You know something That' not what we asked. No. Parvey Shallow was one of them. The others were Amanda Kimmel, Ciri Fields, Natalie Bolton, and Alexis Jones. but you did she did get Parvey orody. Helen would you like to give her half a point? I would. Half a point there. Very nice Fun fact in twenty nineteen, Entertainment Weekly called the work of the Black Widow Brigade to get Eric to give up his immunity and be voted off the greatest survivor moment ever You're nodding along, you agree? Absolutely. All right. Masterful. Masterful. You do love the gameplay, you said. Y do, yeah. ye. All right, here's questestion five. you do still have a hint available Survivor has been nominated for seventy three Emmy Awards and won seven. fourour of those were for host Jeff Prost, and another was for Outstanding nonfiction program Scial cllass, for what behind the scenes crafts were either of its other awards Can I take the hint? Nowell then how about that hint One has to do with how the show looks, another with how it sounds Okay. So based on that, I would say a sound editing. Helen is it sound editing ite Not exactly. Rishi with another chance to steal. Was it for sound mixing? Ellen is it for sound mixing? It was for sound ming. It was for sound mixing. You got another so sor. Successful steal for Rishi. veryer nice. Can I use up my immunity and give it to Megan It's reallyally nice. Yeah. He made sense he kills. He is the black widow of show Very nice. Fun fact, Jeff Propes won his four Emmys for outstanding host of a reality or competition program in four consecutive years, which is very impressive, although maybe not as impressive as RuPaul, who has won eight in a row All right, Meghgan, you still did quite well on that quiz, but now it is your expert level question that requires multiple answers. It is time for your cluster fact. We will be bringing you an expert to discuss your response Meghan Survivor has been welcoming to a diverse group of contestants, including those from the LGBTQ plus community. In fact, the show has been honored for its work with this community multiple times, and one of the most visible examples involves two time survivor contestant Zeke Smith, who accepted an award for Outstanding Reality prorogram on the show's behalf For up to three points, what is the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization that honored Survivor in twenty eighteen with that award? Next, what was the name of that season where previous contestants who had changed the game were invited back to compete? And what season number was that award winning season? and we'll give it to you within five Oh my God U I believe that Media organization is glad. Okay I think the season is game changers, which I'm really hoping is in the twenties, but I have chosen season twenty seven. twenty seven. All right. Well, Helen is taking note of those answers. We have an expert on handing can tell us for sure. Helen, who do we have tonight? Joining us tonight is a writer, comedian, and activist who serves on the board of directors for the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization and is a two time contestant on Survivor. It's Zekemith. Oh Ze Smith C Sorry, I'm not Parvervety.k, I love that you are wearing your Survivor outfit. Yeah. Well I figured I was gonna be the surprise guest, and I don't know. I haven't watched Survivor since I was on it basically. and I'm getting really into fifty. So I like pulled out my old Survivor stuff And I was like, Yeahah, let's let's have fun. Youaring You're wearing the headband. that's a survivor. and then you' wear actually And you're also wearing your signature Hawaiian shirt. Yeah, this one actually is not what I wore on the island because I've gained significant amounts of weight since being on there. But I did wear this to my rehearsal dinner for my wedding. lovevely. Well, St, we're gonna to talk about your famous second season in a bit, but I'm curious about your first season and how you ended up on the show. Why did you want to go on Survivor Well, we'll do the short story because this is kind of like a deeply emotional thing. So back a million years ago when I transitioned, it was before trans people were a thing people knew about So it was a very like lonely process and I started watching Survivor and it became like Jeff Proes became my friend. It became the thing I connected to and I was like, man, like I feel so you know downtroden and I want to be like a mentally and physically strong person, enough so that I could go on sururvivor. Fast forward, it's like ten years later I'm living in New York. I'm doing comedy, noobody knows that I'm trans, and I feel sort of stuck in life And I have sort of this lightning bolt moment, which is if this was not holding you back, what would you do? And immediately was, well whyd go on sururvivor. So just sort of as an exercise in you know, risk taking. I made a video Thinking, nothing's ever gonna happen. They called me back two hours later. Wow. So before I know it,, I'm in Studio City for casting I'm I'm in Fiji and then I'm on the show and then To weeks later, I am back in Fiji for a second season. and It all I was just so caught up in the the joy of like living sort of like without without limits And it became a much I thought I was going to go for one season, get voted out third and be like, well you did it, bud, you know, you took a risk. And then it just became so much more than that. Yeah. Oh my God, I love that you manifested because you were like, what can I do to become fearless? And you just you manifested it. It's all I'm not a very woooo kind of person, but like if I ever have like an inclination of like, ah, the universe has conspired to create like a narrative for my life There's some points that I can point to that feel very connected. Yeah. Well, of course, there was a very famous moment that happened in that second season that was very impactful for a lot of people, but especially in your life. You mentioned that you're a trans man, but at that time, you were not out in that way. And tell the people who aren't as familiar what actually happened on that show. Sure. So like I mentioned, I transitioned a long time ago and then kind of moved on with my life and People didn't know I was trans and that was okay because I was just like being seen authentically as myself. And like I said, that was kind of holding me back. And I was like, well, I want to go do reality TV. But as someone who's kind of media savvy, I don't want that I don't want to be the first trans survivor player. I don't want that to be the thing that defines me because I love Survivor in itself. I just want to be a good survivor game playayer. So I did I went my first season. It never came up. It wasn't a problem, had a ton of fun. I went back two weeks later and about halfway through the season, there was another contestant who like very clearly knew he was getting voted out And so You know, we used to say it was an act of desperation and that he didn't really like mean anything malicious You can go check his Twitter out now and see if you still feel that way. And he very maliciously outed me as transgender and called me deceptive and untrustworthy. But and I know it was terrible. and it was, But what the most incredible part of it was is that everyone who was at that tribal council with me, which is a very diverse group of people. There's like a conservative cop you know Asian guy from S Francisco and the great Aussie and like a really kooky crazy lady named Debie. But everyone to a person, including Jeff Props, the host, was fantastic and like immediately started attacking him and defending me and as horrible as it was, it also became this sort of like centerpiece of this journey that I went on, which is like I wanted to level up in life. and I went on Survivor and the first time I made fire and I led blindsides and won challenges and all this stuff. And then I went to the second season and like I had been strengthened by that experience and was put in a situation I never wanted to be in, but because of sururvivor, I was able to like live up to the moment and then subsequently like go on to be a very like visible representative of the community. Wow And we saw that in the moment, like when it happened because when you were, you know, outed, you did kind of look like a deer in headlights, but like literally within five minutes it seemed, you were like like h hours. It took me a sec to get there. Yeah. But you in the the show, it looked really short, you know within a short period of time, you really were like, okay like you evolved from the moment it happened to to the resolution of it, you were like, okay I'm strong. I can handle this. I can bounce back from this. This is not gonna ruin my life. like I got this. Yeah. And that was so insp it was so inspiring. Oh goodness. I mean It It was so amazing. I remember watching it and being in tears because you were so beloved before that and it was like seeing somebody hurt the person we loved too was like It was so intense for all of us and you were so Incredible. But you know what? you know, I was talking earlier about sort of this like fatalism if I believe in the universe. So that episode aired april twelfth of twenty seventeen A year later April twelfth of twenty eighteen I was at the Glad Media Awards where I met the man who's now my husband. Wow. So even that date, that anniversary, of it, it no longer lives to me as like, oh, that was the day like my whole life changed. It's like, oh, it's the day my whole life changed because I met my husband. Wow. Well, you are credited and I think accurately with helping to change millions of people's perceptions of transgender people whichich I think is absolutely wonderful. Have you heard from a lot of people who went through a similar journey as you? Yeah, I mean, for context, this happened like ten years ago U so it's been it's been quite some time Though it was interesting because like initially it happened in twenty seventeen, like I mentioned. and then, you know, your survivor fame peaks and then drops dramatically. boom, boom. U But then everyone watched like you, everyone watched during the pandemic and it became this whole other So yeah, a lot of people a lot of parents in particularly have reached out and that that has helped them sort of understand their trans kid. And I think what was so transformative about that moment why it shifted so many minds is I got to be a season and a half to seek the dude and not labeled as the trans person. And I think not having that label come first really transform sorry, I keep saying trans that really shifted people's perceptions. Yeah. You talk a lot about the necessity of blazing one's own trail and the importance of allyship. How can people who aren't trans or don't know a trans person personally be good allies Sure. Well I think in this it's so interesting because again, ten years ago, the conversation was so different and now it's so Txic politically, the way trans people have been weaponized even though we talk Soox New talks about trans people every day, trans people are less than zero point five percent of the population. So there is this like outsized conversation. But I think the thing, if people want to be allies to trans people, the thing you can do is go to Glad's website and you will find sort of answers and breakdowns to all of these questions that people have about trans people, and particularly these politicized topics gender affirming care and trans youth and sports and you know, the necessity of identification. And if you can equip yourself with these with this knowledge, and then when you run into people who are like, I don't want boys playing girls sports to be like, well, you know Actually sort of We are very much a well actually show. So you're speaking our language. I feel like I'm speaking speaking to an audience that would, you know embrace this. So that's what you can do. Yes. That's what you can do is to go to GladD, which is gLaAD dot orgot That's correct and learn more about it. Wonderful. I am so interested that you have not watched Survivor. Is that what you said? You haven't watched Survivor since you got off the island? When I get voted out of my seasons, I stopped watching Pettyps. Yeah l my line, my land. You you do the search for your name now. So I watched forty because I had a bunch of friends on it and I'm watching fifty because I have a bunch of friends on it. But I sort of look, as we have discussed, survivor radically changed my life in ways that I feel great about and ways I don't feel great about And I just needed to extricate myself from You know how the sausage is made now? Well, also, they're still on those same Gsh darn beaches that I was on. So you also watch it and you're like, oh yeah, I won that challenge there. and oh yeah, I pooped there and I was so crazy. I looked a man directly in the eyes as I was doing it. Something we all can relate to I'm sure. All right, well let's get to the reasonons we brought you here Zeke as far as our game is concerned. You heard the questions that we asked of Megan. First, we wanted to know what is the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization that honored Survivor with an award in twenty eighteen. Helen, what did Megan say? Megan said Glad Zeke Blad! Glad indeed. You can donate on glad. org Next, we want to know what was the name of that season where previous contestants who had changed the game were invited back to compete. Helen, what did Mean say? Megan said Game changers. E Zeke. Game changers, baby, and we're in the buff. That's right, it's on the buff And finally, we wanted to know what season number was that award winning season that featured someone named Zeke Smith. Helen, what did Megan say? Meaggan said twenty seven. W W. And what was it Zeke? thirty four. thirty four, sorry, in the thirties, not in the twenties. But you look like you're from a season twenty seven. So wait a minute, that older. No, I'm trying to feel like you look like you don't look at day over twenty seven is what I'm trying to say. Sorry, no point there. Meagan, while we have Zeke here, is there anything you wantanna ask her say? I mean, like I have questions about like what happens when people have contact lenses? Like I really wna know where you poop. I like really, really Well I think those are important connected questions because sometimes you have to, you know, contacts and poop, you don't want to get that in theong way. Yeah paintie onland. Yeah. I was a contacts where I work daies. so you just have like there there's a big box hidden amongst the coconut trees that has sunscreen, bug spray and hand sanitizer. And yeah, you just sort of have to kind of do the best you can to rinse your sand off with the water in your bottles before you put your contacts in you always have backup glasses and that was actually key because in the second season, I scratched my cornea with sand from trying to put my contacts in. and had to like wear my glasses the rest of the time And you thought, well, that's going to be the worst thing that happens to me on this season. Oh actually it was after It was after. You're like now Yeah. Zeke, it's been so wonderful that you join us if people want to find out more about you and what you're up to, where can they do that? Yeah. so you can follow me at Zeiker Chief, which is Z E K E R C H I EF And donate at glladdot org. Excellent. Well we're glad that you came today, Zeke Smith everybody.
