I'm Chris Molanfy, chart analyst, pop critic, and writer of Satess Why is this song number one series on today's show There's a new movie hitting theaters this month, directed by John Carney, the man behind Once and Sing Street, and its title is Power Ballad I saw this movie last weekend and around the same time One of my best friends from college asked me if Hit parade had ever covered power ballots in an episode, which prompts the question What exactly is a power bally? You may think you know what a power ballad sounds like. Usually it's something based in rock. But that definition is actually too limiting. Power ballads have roots in earlier forms of rock and soul balladry, as far back as the fifties and sixties The modern history of the power ballads starts around the nineteen seventies, and there were not only rock power ballads, but also soul and even pop power ballads. surprise Its peak happened in the nineteen eighties, fueled by heavy metal and hair metal but not exclusively. There have been number one power ballads sung by pop stars, R and B queens, and yes, long haired dude rockers While the quintessential power ballad singer is thought to be a dude, women have not only historically thrived with power ballads Th dreames They may be keeping the form alive. So in this episode, let's try to define what is a power ballot When did it command the hit parade? And will the power balance survive deeper into the twenty first century So before we dig into the history, let's just ask, what exactly is a power ballot Now with the caveat that I am not a musicologist According to a study conducted by Cambridge University, Yes, Cambridge The power ballot is, quote, defined by the use of both a musical formula based on constant escalation and an expressive formula that combines the euphoric uplift created by rousing music with sentimental themes.ote That's a whole lot of words. To translate this for my fellow non musicologists, basically a power ballad builds and builds and then builds some more As for my college friend Myra, she was inspired to ask me the question, What is a power ballad when she heard the Australian Pop act air supply on the radio I thought that was interesting because air supppply do have some power ballads, but not all of their hits are power ballads. For example, their breakthrough hit, Lost in Love, is pretty clearly just soft rock with some slight country music overtones But as air supply became bigger eighties hitmakers, by the way, they scored eight top five hits between nineteen eighty and nineteen eighty three, seven of those consecutively, the power ballad overtones in their music increased as they amped up the drama For example, their only US number one hit, the one that you love, is pretty power ballad light Then their final US topop ten hit, which we discussed in our Jim Steinman episode of Hit Parade, making love out of nothing at all is total power Now before I go too deep down the air supply rabbit hole, let me digress and play you a little bit of an ad that you may have seen on television around the turn of the millennium This ad is called Monster Ballads. They taught us how to love. Give them to me. They taught us how to live. And now they're back Monster ballads. This is what most people think of as the stereotypical power ballad. You might say that monster ballads are the dominant substrin of the power ballad These are the songs that are attempting to retain rock cred while still delivering that romantic power ballad vibe The monster form of the power ballad is very eighty centric and early nineties, and it's very gendered It's believed that only a macho dude can sing these kinds of ballads However, even on the Monster Ballads compilation they sold on TV in the early two thousands, they included hits by the likes of Hearts Anne Wilson with her nineteen eighty four Mike Reno duet from the footloose soundtrack, Almost Paradise Even the Banggals who had a number one hit with Eernal flame China Now, let's go back to the movie that just hit theaters last week. It's called Power Ballad. And it's debatable whether the titular song in this movie is even a traditional power ballot For one thing, the lead character's name played by Paul Rudd is Rick Power. It's as if they're implying that this is a ballad written by a guy named P a songong without you Be every song I ever wrote in my life A Yeah. Okay good, okay. so do you have a bridge yet? However, the song is quite sturdy and it's heard multiple times in the movie, both by the songwriter, played by Rud and by the pop star played by Nick Jonas And it does have that ramp up to the chorus. The climaxes are subtler, but it does qualify as a power ballad, even though it soars more than it rocks In the end, I would say that power ballads are a little like Potter Stewart's old definition on pornography. He said, I know it when I see it And you know a power ballad when you hear it. Power ballads are hits that soar Anden. powerower ballads are melodramatic. I bit angry and Londough I' not to get outide around Often, but not always, power balance rock And just as often, power ballads feature Olympic level vocals By the way, one more thing, power ballots are meant to be commercial. The charts matter sure there is such a thing as a failed power ballad, a song that didn't make it all the way But there's no such thing as a power ballid deep cut These are songs that were intended for the marketplace So in that spirit, why don't we walk through some examples across chart history Early Rock and rollers mixed melodrama and rock instrumentation. For example, The King of Rock and Rll, Elvis Presley, his most famous hit Can't Hel Falling in Love, a number two in nineteen sixty one Yeah. U Falling in love did feature soaring vocals. But on the whole, Elvis Presley's ballads tended to be meer. And he distinguished between his rockers and his romantic hits. The romantic hits tended to be slower Love me tender, Lo me long takeake me Arguably the early rock and' roller who most consistently delivered power vocals in this era was Roy Orbison. The new look lovely C be Just like me In a review of nineteen sixty four's It's Over, a number nine hit on the Hot one hundred, Billboard called Orbison quote, the drama ballad King. s after all That was nineteen sixties code for a power vocalist Other dramatic ballots from Roy Orbison included crying, number two in nineteen sixty one. And in Dreams, a number seven hit in sixty three By nineteen sixty five, Roy Orbison's vocal fireworks were emulated by other singers, like The Righteous Brothers. They worked with producer Phil Specter, and their big hits combined big vocals and Specter's wall of sound, like the number one hit, You've Lost That love and feeleing. Or the Righteous Brrosers Unchained Melody, a number four hit in nineteen sixty five. You may recall that it made a big comeback in nineteen ninety when it was featured in the Patrick Swzy movie Ghost However Unchained melody also sounded appropriate on the radio of nineteen ninety because it was basically a power ballad twenty five years ahead of its time Before the sixties were out, R and B was also showing how ballads could have a different kind of power. Of course, the ultimate power vocalist of R and B of the sixties was Ms Aretha Franklin But she generally started her songs already with guns bllazing However on You Make M feelel likeike a natural womoman. A top ten hit in nineteen sixty eight. She held back in reserve at the beginning of the song, then built to a power chorus Or consider Diana Ross's first hit of her new solo career in nineteen seventy, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, a song that had already been a hit for Marvin Gay and Tammy Tarerell In her innovative reboot, Diana Ross built to a climax and held back the hook until the very end of the song. Power ballad really began to take shape in the nineteen seventies. You might say the year nineteen seventy two was ground zero for the powerower ballad the beta test, if you will An obvious candidate is Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. from a nineteen seventy one LP Led Zeppelin four. It was on the radio by nineteen seventy two And certainly, stairway perfected the long build. The only problem with Stairway to Heaven is first of all, it wasn't a single, and second of all, it was eight minutes long better example from seventy two is Carry Nelson's cover bad fingers without you This was a more prototypical power ballad. It reached number one in ' seventy two and featured operatic vocals so operatic that Mariah Carerey remade it twenty years later. But I would say the shocker of the class of seventy two power ballads came from the carpenters. Yes, the carpenters, who are best known for their gentle middle of the road ballads They made a huge contribution to the form of the power ballot in ' seventy two. Be. A on for this heart of m S it will los bit memories and I someone to. The carpenters had already amped up the melodrama in their hits, like on their number two nineteen seventy one cover of Leon Russell's superstar But their seminoal power ballad was seventy two's Goodbye to loveo. It was mostly a gentle carpenter's ballad. However, Richard Carpenter specifically hired session guitarist Tony Palusso to provide a searing guitar solo much, much harder than the rest of the ballad surrounding it Goodbye to Love showed that even the gentlest song with vocals by Karen Carpenter, could be surrounded by thunderous rock guitar By the mid seventies, the hard rock power ballad prototype, even beyond Led Zeppelin, was codified by two hits. In nineteen seventy five, Sticks finally had their breakthrough with the song Lady It took more than a year to break. Recorded and released in nineteen seventy three, it didn't reach the top ten on the Hot one hundred until early seventy five wrriter Dennasty Young has been called a power ballid forefather. lady showed that a pop band, albeit a progressive pop band, could sing a rock and love song. The other prototype was from Kiss, the song Beth. I hear you calling, but I can't come home. It's kind of a misnomer to call Beth Kiss's first top ten hit, even though that's how it was credited. It was really a solo single by their drummer, Peter Chris. He is the only member of Kiss you hear on the record Otherwise he's surrounded by an orchestra playing behind him T Beth grafted gravelly rock vocals to a string arrangement, another trope that would be common in power ballads for the rest of the seventies and eighties the funal and. Some descendants of both Lady and Beth include Boston's classic More Than A Feeling, a number five hit in late seventy six. It was a love song that featured a paradigmatic guitar riff and high keying vocals from Brad Delt as well as an almost symphonic arrangement Then in nineteen seventy eight comes the number six hit Dust in the Wind by Kansas. Like Kisses Beth, it's orchestral, but it never rocks out. It's Kansas's only top ten hits He. No. Hold another minute By the late seventies, this power ballad style was also infecting pop hit makers like Barry Manilo Disco Divas like Donna Summer. Y'all come check us out. The peak of the power ballad came in the nineteen eighties, and the synthesizer played a role Pop in general was using more synths by the eighties, but by the time of Foreigner's big hit waiting for a girl like you in nineteen eighty one, synthesizers were essential to the sound of a hit record. Waiting for a girl like you with synths played by Thomas Dolby, hit number two on the Hot one hundred and stayed there for a record ten weeks That same year, Ario Speedwagon helped codify the power ballad. There were keyboards and guitar riffs prominent on both of their number one hits. Keep on Lving you in nineteen eighty one is built around Kevin Cronen's piano and Gary Richrath's guitar solo And four years later, in early nineteen eighty five, the wagon went right back to number one with another power ballad, Can't Fight this Feeling, which featured a synthesizer melody and, again, a rockin Rich Wrath guitar solo Journey also brought both keyboards and guitars to the power ballad by nineteen eighty one, ' eighty two and eighty three. When people hear the name Journey, they mostly think of donon't stop believing. And certainly, it's got elements of the power ballad, but that's really more anthembck That album, Escape had two bigger hits and both are piano based power ballads Who's crying now a number four hit in nineteen eighty one and open arms, number two in nineteen eighty two The Power ballad faithfully from their nineteen eighty three album Frontiers often tops rankings of power ballads. By the way, it also directly inspired Prince to write his nineteen eighty four hit Purple Rain. Prince called Jonathan Caine, keyboardist and songwriter for Journey to confess that their chord changes were the same So I get print on the phone and. And I'm like, I have no problem with this or I understand your concern, but there are two different songs, Fpeully and Purple Rin. And it sounds like a hit to me. We're completely cool. I know the band would be cool. I'm cool. Congratulations. You got a hit on your hands While all this was going on, R and B and Divaop were also making the power ballad more athletic We have to talk about Whitney Houston. She turned ballad singing into an Olympic sport. For example, Gest Love of all, her number one hit from nineteen eighty six was a former seventies R and B song, a pretty gentle song that she turned into an eighties power ballot In fact, many of Whitney's number one hits are R and B power ballots. Didn't we almost have it all Soon What Or where do broken hearts go? In general, the eighties had plenty of R and B power ballads, Jennifer Holidays, and I am telling you, I'm not going. A number one R and B number twenty two pop hit has a positively explosive climax And it was a big decade for pop and be duets that followed the explosive power ballad form Lionel Richie and Diana Ross's Endless love on number one in nineteen eighty one. And Patty Labele and Michael McDonald's On My ownwn, which topped the charts in nineteen eighty six But of course, the eighties sub genenre that utterly codified the powerower ballad was hair metal Jair Right from the start of the decade, producer Mutt Lang, who had just worked on Waiting for a girl like you with Foreigner, produced some early power balls for Deaf Leopard, like Bringing on the Heartbreak quintessential eightyiess hair metetal power ballad might be Motley Crw's homeome Seite home No I'm a dreamer. Here's the thing about Home Suite Home. In nineteen eighty five, when it came out, it wasn't actually a big hit. On the pop chart, it reached number eighty nine, evenven on the album rock chart, it only reached number thirty nine A remix in nineteen ninety one would crack the top forty, barely. But on MTV, it was the number one most requested video for months A combination of sweet melody, snarling vocals from lead singer Vince Neil and a fist pumping live video proved a sturdy template for the hair metal power ballet Or let's call it the monster vow Some other late eighties hair metal hits in the Motley Cw model that juxtaposed bad boy vocals with metal gear and sweet melodies, Bon Jovyyss Wed Deadter Alive, a number seven hit in nineteen eighty seven Europe's Carry, number three, later in ' eighty seven. By the way, most people think of Europe as the band that did the final countdown, but Carry was actually a higher charting hit White Snake scored with two power ballads. They remade their nineteen eighty two deep cut, hereere I Go again as a quintessential eighty seven power ballad and got it all the way to number one. Yeah And their follow up is this love reach number two Is the wagon h This is love Cinderella reached number twelve with donon't know what you got till it's gone. Guns and Roses, the Bad boys of Hir metetal, scored best with their ballads, including, of course, swweet Child of mine number one in nineteen eighty eight and the gentle patience, a top five hit in nineteen eighty nine You will out of you in littlecation Def Leopard scored their only number one hit with a power ballad. Love Bes in eighty eight poison their only number one hit was Every roose has its thorn in nineteen eighty eight and ' eighty nine It's the ide for that This is done An Skid Row, fronted by Sebastian Bach, scored two top ten hits in nineteen eighty nine and ninety that were different forms of the power ballot. The sinister eighteen in life And the sweeter I remember you. The trick with a hair metetal band is you led the promotion of their album with a hard rocker then kept a ballad in waiting to deploy as the album's second or third single Often the power ballad was the biggest hit on the album. And by the way, eighty's hard rock power ballads weren't only sung by men. Hearts scored with songs like What About Love in nineteen eighty five. And alone, a big number one hit in nineteen eighty seven More in a moment My name is Peritope. a transparent green gemstone. I was discovered by chance in the center of Patagonia Most stones are born in the Earth's crust, my origin is rather different I am extraterrestrial. McDonalds at the FIFA World Cup, twenty twenty six Rock gradually started to turn away from the power ballad in the nineteen nineties, but not right away. And some of the nineties power ballads are debatable as power ballads. Feel free to write me at hip parade at slate d. com if you have opinions about what these nineties songs sound like At firstirst, hair metal did keep the power ballet alive in the early nineties before and even after Gunge broke. So there were hits by Firehouse Mr. Big. They know show you And yes, the dreaded Bon Jovy. Grunge blew up, it did have ballads and slow songs But they weren't necessarily power ballads that built to a crescendo. someome exceptions that qualify as Grunge are Sound Gardens's black hole sun candle boxes far behind, which is basically hair metal in grunge clothing. Do me And Pearl Jam's soaring Betteran Post Grunge was more unabashed in its adherence to the power ballid formula The hits by Creed, even their up tempo hits, pretty much all sounded like power ballads especially their two thousand number one hit with arms wide open. O post Grunge hits that sounded like power ballads included Collective Souls, the world I known especially Googoo Dlls deeathless top ten hit, Iris. See me Be I don' think they'd understand all of these hits, leveraged power ballad tricks, but cloaked them in grunge aesthetics. Arguably in the nineties, R and B and Divaop were doing more to keep the power ballot alive. Whitney Houston had already set the bar in the eighties, and in the nineties, she kept upping the ante. What is, I will always loveve you, but another power ballot on steroids Th then Whitney's main competitor, Mariah Carerey doubled down on the power ballot She led off her career in nineteen ninety with a traditional soul ballad infused with power ballad energy, vision of love, number one in the summer of nineteen ninety Mariah's follow upps also follow the power ballad template, such as nineteen ninety one's I don't Wna Cry nineteen ninety three's hero. And if I see the true H Yeah nineteen ninety five's One sweet day. Then blowing in from Canada in the nineties, Celine Dion brought the athletic vocal approach to pop, starting with her very first hit, Where does my heart beat now Most of Celine's biggest hits were power ballots. The nineteen ninety four number one hit, The Power of Love nineteen ninety six's number two hit. It's all coming backack to me now, written and produced by Jim Steinman orning. And of course, the nineteen ninety eight number one hit from Titanic, My Heart Will Go on Perhaps the most anomalous nineties power ballad came from Aerosmith, who scored their only career number one hit in nineteen ninety eight with the schlocky Diane Warren power ballad, I don't want to miss a thing Keep come In general, ballads as a form fell off in the ous, and the dominant strains of pop like hip hop and pop punk and emo, tended toward more consistent tempos. They didn't have the build. Beyonce's ballads, for example, tend to be either on the meower side, like irreplaceable I'm sure. or are full of fireworks throughout like halo to Probably the closest Beyonce came to a traditional power ballad was two thousand eight's number three hit if I were a boy. In the middle of the decade, when the hard rock band Hinder scored a very traditional old school power ballad with lips of an angel It was a total fluke. A number three hit on the Hot one hundred in two thousand six, and then Hinder never came close to the top of the pop charts again. In the twenty ten s, the quQueen of the powerower Ballad was arguably Adele, who crossed British soul with vocal fireworks on hits like twenty eleven's Rolling in the deep And twenty fifteen's Hello. In twenty thirteen, Miley Cyrus revived a semit traditional power ballad structure on her number one hit, Wrecking Ball
