G be talking about two very different things as you might have seen on the thumbnail today that I don't know why, but it really tickles me bl. Yes. this is a very funny. It tickled me because I saw the thumbnail and went the fuck is that? Yeah Yeah apparently I the guy himself.ion it. Yeah. I question it. Yeah. Andy, what was your thought process as the designer of the thumbnail was you know You want to either have some enticing words that seem clickable like I feel like we have good Good luck whenever you pose a question to the audience. Is this you something you would buy? Is this you know, who you know this man? Yeah, exactly. I should have been. But it was just It was kind of Goofy enough to where I'm like, I feel like this is something Goofy enough to be clickable. Yeah which is a picture of shirtless Doom guy. Doom Slayer from the New DeLC that we'll be talking about very, very soon with the rhythm Heaven logo And it kind of reminds me of like anytime you'd see U had of crossing in doom, you know? I just didn't know he was hot I honestly, I didn't either. I guess I could have assumed He took take his you seem without his helmet in at the end of Dark Ages. I still remember that. the only thing I remember about Dark Ages was mowing down Hella enemies and the Kakademons Cakademons. I just don't yeah, he just looks I guess I always envision Doom guy as like a MGa Republican. Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. Like I always like I you tell me that's not This guy doesn't know politics. I know a lot of Man Republicans don't know politics either. This guy doesn't know a party. This guy's never even thought about going to a voting booth. This guy's only going to tan and going to work out. He reminds me of Mike stick with me. He reminds me of arex Grossman. Remember? Sexy Rexy? Yeah. Sexy Rex There he is. here' him. Yeah, old renders of the doom guy And there he is in dark ages, right there with his Yeah, I guess they changed his look quite a bit. They looking too sexy here. Yeah. this is a different time period. Yeah. Yeah. things are wrong. We didn't know we wanted him to be sexy This was how I envioned them though Like he should be marked up. He should be like Stressed out. Yeah The guy in the thumbnail, like he looks like he's been chilling He looks like he should be on loveve Island. And he's theoretically the most stressed he's ever been in that thumbnail. Yeah. He ready herear all about that today because we're talking about Doom, the Dark Aes Revelation and Rhythm Heaven. So shout out to Carl Jacobs and make a buster, delayy thesalm twwining and Lacks nomad. for now let's begin with the topic of the show. Doom DLC preview, rhythm and review. Let's start with some doom. Andy Cortez, tellell me what you did I sau stuff D't didn't get to play it. This is a this was a remote littleittle event where there, you know, we you kind of just you watch some video, you get told a bunch of things from the directors and and then you we had a little Q and A session at the very, very end O you just sort of like chat in a little chat room. ery reminiscent of a lot of COVID. uh events, you know, Um I love doing the Dark Aes like a lot I think I like it more than most. I think you are number one fan of it. If anyone that I've heard, like you were definitely h This game rocks so hard and it just continues to get better. And with this upcoming DLC expansion, u during the Dark Age Revelation. adds a new weapon that sort of It add so many different mechanics that the whole game kind of revolves around It takes place it replaces the your shield which your shield was good for Parries and throwing at enemies. and you could do the Captain America thing where the shield would, you know, hit multiple enemies and kind of you know come back to you. But the spear that they are introducing is also a parried like device You can also use it for grappling and for movement, like we've seen in a lot of these clips so far And it's just the coolest shit ever. And and it adds just a whole new A lot of their sort of philosophy behind this DLC was You know, it's It's a love letter to doom and we want to kind of bring and merge in a lot of the stuff about twenty sixteen and Eternal that we love into this. And when When a turtle came out, a lot of people had different you know, mixed thoughts about the maneuverability and the verticality and some people say, man, I just, you know, I didn't love all the air dashing and jumping and shit like that. I personally love that shit. and The u When due to the dark ages comes out, it's like the whole philosophy is stand your ground. And you stand there, you parry, you push There wasn't a dash, however Now we got to dash back. The movement is back er, you could jump up in the sky with it. you can, you know, again row your spear and it's connected to a chain that you can , you know, spin around enemies similar to I think of like And I think of the way pathfinder controls and Apex leegends where you have that sort of, you know, grapple mechanic And it just seems to be adding so much more fun to An already insanely fun video game to play. And yeah, super super pumped about it Ry my big question to start this off with DLCs, I feel like they're often Fun, cool, but coming at a too late time, right? Doom Dark Aes last year. We arere now back to this over a year, right? Yeah. Well came out. I believe it was spring. Yeahah. So like a year in a month year in two months. So here we are. It's like the DLC coming out. I think it's going to be, you know, quite the challenge to get a lot of people back in. Are you planning to actually see this through and play? Oh, one hundred percent. it's just too much fun to play. There will be a lot of content there for people that want to seek it out. However, it has like its's sort of main hooks that you're going through.. the They kept on mentioning that We want you to We want you to be patient with the way the spear evolves and levels up Because at any time you can go back to your shield You're not stuck with this fear by any means. But it is a it is a weapon that takes a while to fully kind of get fully kitted out um, with the with the dash and the grapple moves that you will eventually unlock Most of the DLC is built on the chain spear That's kind of like there's so many mechanics that they have and with the with using the spear in mind Um New enemies. the campaign is made of two parts what they had mentioned and that sixty percent of the base game There's sixty percent of this DLC that is base game missions and the rest is like end game content where you are unlocking unlocking the hardest challenge rooms possible with the most like sort of insane encounters with craziest enemies and It's like how can you challenge yourself to try to beat this stuff on the hardest difficulties possible U and game is a lot of challenges, master arenas with intense combat encounters Um, and then they also have this thing called the Slayers Hub, which is kind of The main place where you would go to to go out on these missions, but the hub that you eventually kind of go back to has unlockable things, you know, places to discover within it. It isn't just an area that you're just there for. it's like There's a lot of gamified things about your home base that allow you to learn more about the Doom Slayer and For the people who really give a shit about the lore, which is like, you know, I'm very give or take. I love the goofiness of all of it. I love how how corny and and, you know how much it feels just like an eighties movie and how Every is just ridiculous that like of course this This dude is just killing aliens in space and he's the most fe he's the most feared thing in the universe. I there are a lot of things there for people who really give a shit about how does this connect to a lot of the other do missions. They have also showed off in a couple of the DLC. I think in the first trailer we saw of this, which was at Was it Xboxes It' okay. Yeahah where they are also remixing older levels with kind of new visuals and things like that. So it was like, Yeah, I remember it was like the original Doom Yeah L Yeah, So levels that you remember from back of the day, they had mentioned that, you know, the The Doom guys definitely like a lot larger now. it was like kind of tougher to to not scale up the whole area, but Yeah, just There's a lot of content there to unlock and kind of sink your teeth into because this is the doom guy at his at his weakest. They they have kind of taken away, you know, they knocked his helmet off. He's kind of He's just shirless. Nibbles are out to him. and what are you going to do when your backs against the wall and your n out. You know, you're going to fight back because the doom guy And and yeah, everything they've shut off so far mechanically with the with the spear weapon. it's like, oh, shit this This feels like a completely new way to play because They Again took away a lot of those mechanics from you know, eternal going into the dark ages. and this feels like a really cool way to bring back everything that we love about the past two Dune games that we've worked on and what makes them so special Mike, you planning to hop back into this one? I am, Tim. I actually am really impressed by the look of this. I was someone who gave Doom the dark Aes All capapital' good. I enjoyed it, but I actually preferred Doom Eternal in the original Doom more than this third one in the series here of the new series. But yeah, for me, everything that I'm seeing with that spear turning into a grapple hook, the movement that I'm seeing definitely is the playstyle that I want to jump into that I think I did not get in Doom the Dark Ages Andy I'm hearing a lot of positive of like what I want to see out of this. Also I'm not hearing much dragon and or mech combat. Of course, if you remember d the Dark Aes, it was kind of one level on foot, one level on the dragon, one level in the mech and Rinse and repeats I'm not seeing any of that from the footage that we've been provided. I'm also not hearing any of that Will we see the dragon in the mech or is this all kind of on foot situations? Um No, there is no dragon Okay because lower purposes You know big story thing that happens. Okay Dragon turns to your wife. I'm k But because but because of what happens in Doom to Dark agges, there, you know, sh action. There's not a there's not a dragon riot anymore.. So we are we are just fully the Doom guy again. Yeah. I mean, sounds to me everything that I wanted kind of or changed into this and remixed is exactly what I'm looking for, right? Like that. Look here, you're kind of telling me I like this. I'm with Mike. I forget what I gave it. I probably gave it a grade for Doom the Dark Ages. I really enjoyed the game, but I also preferred doom twenty sixteen and Doom Eternal. But what's funny? I think in retrospect looking back at it, I remember booting up Doom twenty sixteen after playing Dark Ages and being shocked by how far we've come. You know, Doom the Dark Age just feel so high fidelity. it feels so full. it feels so action packed. And when you play Doom twenty sixteen, you forget that like, oh, that was. It' four generation, which isn't that long ago, but is that long ago that was over six years ago, right? But then when you're talking about that point of the generation, there's something about it that feels a little bit empty, a little bit muted compared to Doom the Dark ages and how much that is bringing. And so I think for me, one of the reasons why I was looking back to that in Eternal were things like the dash that we had in Eternal movement based combat, right? I think that speaks to me more so than the standard groundness of Doom the Drc Ages. But with Andy talking about the spear also doubling as a grappling hook and you know, having that there I don't know. I'm not that big of a DLC person come back after a year after I've beaten something, but I think I am in the mood. I think there is something about watching the gameplay where I'm like, I could go back I can go back for some more. I can go back to doom. There there, you know, I think if you If you roll back the footage from our security camera with me in the like I'm just head bobbing the whole time because like as they're showing this off as we've seeing the awesome gameplay, it is the awesome soundtrack. And again It's on Mick Gordon. And I know that that was a, you know, a tough breakup Um Ive I think the new music still kicks ass doesn't hit quite as hard, but it still hits really, really hard when you're flying through the sky and you are, you know, destroying an enemy with the coolest parries possible. I think I love most The thing I love about theark about Darkge is it really felt like When you play it out on a hard difficulty, I got way more fun out of it I got so much fun out of trying to parry everything possible and that feedback and visually and, you know, audio, all of that. just felt so good to do and with the you know, this brand new spear weapon and I go, oh, shit, I love this shield. That means I can't pairry. No, you still can. They are just adding the dash in that as well, which As I'm playing During the dark ages, I often felt like, man, I kind of wish I had a dash right now. That's. to kind of bring everything full circle feels like such the right move I forgot to say this at the top of the show Doom the Dark Agees Revelations is coming on july seventh for twenty dollars. on all the platforms that Doom Dark Ages is available. And they're saying that the campaign should take roughly ten to twelve hours fromom what you've seen, does that all seem like It adds up and that's going to be the case. Yeah thousand percent. And I think it's just there's such a There's such an awesome thing about suuper Tent to deevs being able to make more content for a game that didn't sell gangbusters But there's just so much quality and there's so much belief in what this in what doom is and what makes it so good. And I again, as much as I love the Dark ages, I feel like I'm going to love the combat of this even more than I did the Dark agges So much of it is so inventive. And I am such a sucker for that high The high mobility, I'm up in the sky. I'm getting the headshot there. I'm pairing the dude in midair. There's so much to love about the doom just poor gameplay and it seems like it's just continuing to get better. Bless you jumping in. I think so Yeah. this I mean, Andy iss making me want to jump in here. reallyally it comes down to other video games that are that I'm playing whichich just kind of seems like a really good time for this to come out, right? Like Yeah But I'm also I'm in backlog mode. That's the other thing And so' you know, I'm twenty five hours into an ex hole, playing Zo playayade Chronicles. I think I'll still be playing that by the time we hit july seventh U and then there's also travel and other things, but This makes me want to hop out. I think they' placing this at a perfect time, right? I didn't realize the twenty dollars thing. I don't know why I thought it was like forty or something like that. twenty dollars for what they're saying is ten to twelve hours, even even if that is, let's say eight hours if they're doing dev math. That's a pretty good price for this. I assume DLC isn't usually a game pass thing, right? No, you're usually buying the DLC But twenty dollars is not bad for eight more hours of doom, the dark ages Yeah It seems like a fun weekend of doom. right? Like you said, Andy, Killer soundtrack in knock this out in the weekend. I'm going to be pumped up from Friday to Sunday night Yeah, it just seems like a really neat way to kind of How do we How do we not just give you more of the same and looking at this spear weapon? it's like, man, how did this get Uh How did this not get put into the final game? You know? and I wonder if there was just a lot of things that had to be worked on with it, But they they mentioned it's been in development for, you know a little over a year kind of like exactly since when the Dark Agees shipped. they just kind of went directly into this and have had a lot of time to to you know, continue to work on what makes Doom so much fun. And I think I think it's just really neat for a studio to say, yeah, we worked on this thing for a year and We aren't tryrying to make the most expensive high budget game ever that's going to take forever to develop We're going to use what we have and we're going to try to make new things that kind of expand the experience and Again, if you haven't played Dark Ages, I really hope that they put out some sort of like combo deal with Dark Ages and this dealC It is It's as good as a first person shooter gets. Like legitimately if if you're somebody out there who H ever had a passing interest in playing Keyboard mouse first person shooters, I think a game like this is like the perfect place tryry to train yourself It's just so much freaking fun. And there is so much accessibility with Doom in and how the enemies and what the enemies do damage wise and the difficulties you're doing. One of my favorite things accessibility wise and it's such a small thing, but like It enhanced my experience because I love changing the colors of what the parried Um, you know, projectile Yeah the parried projectile. I would change into purple. I would change in the to red, to blue like I just had so much fun with little customizations like that and yeah, the rest of the game just was so much freaking fun. Doom the Dark Age rules and this looks like it's going to continue to be awesome. You talk about Doom the Dark Age being as good as a first person shooter can be, right? I would extend that to the Doom franchise. likeike these last three games, I think have been I guess this has been a special video game trilogy when you're talking about how they've revitalized the are shooter. I would extend that a little bit more A and Wolfenstein. Yeah I think but does then what these two teams have done bringing back doom into the mainstay and of course Wolfenstein. like we've been blessed with what the past five games from those teams. Yeah, three on here and two great Wolfenein young I don'm talking about that one. but like those are five incredible incredible single player first person shooter campaigns that you can go get lost in and just like Andy said, if you're learning how to play keyboard and mouse, these are great onboarding games for you. If you're already a die hard first person shooter fan, just looking for great single player campaigns, hey, all five of these games are unbelievable man You know, Butetesa, of course, their identity has changed a lot, especially after being acquired by Microsoft, right? But when you're talking about that late twenty tenens era, Bethesda, what you're talking about with the Wolfenstein in Doom, I was looking looking at them as you guys are the arbiters of first person shooters right now. Yeah, right. Speaking to Wolfenstein and Doom specifically, there' two halves of the same coin. I think doom in terms of gameplay is perfect, right? Second to none. Wolfenstein though, was bringing it in story. And that's one of the reasons I'm really sad we haven't gotten a Wolfenstein game aside from young Blood and the VR one. you can't forget the VR one Aside from those two haven't gotten a Wolfenstein game since twenty seventeen because that's when Wolfenstein The new cololossus came out That story, those cutscenes, those characters so good, right? And like I think we had something special that generation between games like that, games like Titanfall as well. you know, Titanfall two, I think was kind of in the middle of like having a great story, but then also having fantastic gameplay. I want to I want to get back to that era. and so I'm happy I'm happy it' software is still cooking. I hope they continue to cook you know, get scared under Xbox with all this stuff happening, but I hope this can this studio continues to thrive. Look at the skill expression, man. like this is This is the type of game that whenever you You can kind of pull off any sort of move you want and it is going to make you feel awesome. And that's You just want to feel cool and have fun playing a video game. And this so much of what we're seeing and you're not just stuck to the spear. you see the people who are in this demo swapping between the spear and the shield And it's they're just doing the coolest shit ever. It's like this is what I want out of first person shooters. Andy I doubt you have the answer to this, but I don't know what Qs were asked and what As you got at the Q and A things. Scott Tremper in the chat was asking, is this standalone And the reason he brings it up is he had dark ages on PS five, but his sense buildil's a badass PC. so he wants to play on game passass and No, sa fal stuff. No no this is DLC. ye Yeah, notot standalone My one request for I don't know I don't know I assume they didn't do this with the DLC, but for the next doom game, one thing I do miss rom doune twenty sixteen. I think Dom Eternal might have had it as well. wereere the glory kills where you would Damage enemy to the point where they're blinking red, R right? And then you press R three and like Here in this game, it's kind of more so like dash at them and hit them with something and they kind of explode. whereereas what it used to be was like doom Doom slay would like grab them, rip off their head or like grab them and then snap them in half. Like the glory kills those last, you know, those last hits were a bit more Id use the word viseral, but visceral and gory. And there was something really satisfying about that. I think they streamlined it in this in these modern itations because they wanted to be a bit more quick But I likeked how in your face the Gory Kills were. So I hope they kind of bring that mechanic back I don't know I assume they didn't Do that for No, I mean, I think a lot of it comes down to you know, the gameplay loop of not wanting every four seconds to be a glory kill Yeah and like how that It kind of gets in the way of the momentum in and the gameplay. But I mean there's still like some brutal animations, of course, but yeah, esssentially This is just coming from my opinion, but like I didn't want every time I would see red or purple or whatever like the week was to be it. to just zip over there, zip like I sure, you know I feel like it kind of ruined a bit of the momentum, but I don't know if they're adding a whole A lot of new animations or stuff. I would assume I mean There's got to be some new things that they've added with the spear. Yeah Any final thoughts on Doom the Dark Age's revelation No, it kicks ass. support supporting an awesome stududio that is continuing to make awesome shit. It's crazy when we'll be playing this in a week. It comes out on july eighth. So excing. like we're right around the corner from this. I love that we get the preview to hype ourselves up and not have to wait a month. It's like, oh yeah, guess what? you'll play this next week. I'm pumped up. Kobe Superrats insane late to the party. so sorry if it was answered already, But will revelations have the same skill check immediately like how the ancient gods did, or is it going to onboard us again? I have no idea No clue. Yeah. I wish I probably would be able to answer that had I Yeah had we had like an actual hands on, but Unfortunately We are going to take a quick word from our sponsors and when we get back, we're going to give a review of rhythm heaven, Groove Things have been really hard lately. Things have been bad in the industry. We're on Games daily talking about bad stuff all the time. I just want to say thank you. Thank you for watching us. Thank you for listening to us. Thank you for sharing us with your friends or whatever it is. I'm not even asking you to do anything right now. I just want to say thank you Hope you're having a great day And if not I hope this made it just a little bit better Thank you. Next up, we have Rhythm Heaven Groove. It is coming out tomorrow on july second, twenty twenty six on the Nintendo Switch. For forty dollars, both digitally and physically. I have played it. I have beat it. Bless has played it. Did you beat it? No. Okay. How many hours you put into it? Not that many. L maybe two. Okay. mayaybe an hour and a half. Okay I start off like starting is short because I just I didn't beat it because I was really not having a good time, which saddens me because I was looking forward to this. I liked I've said this a million times, but there are indie games I' have taken a lot of influence from Rhythm Heaven. The one that I always reference is Melatonin, a game that I really liked that has a lot of the same concepts of you are you or you are repeating a rhythmic sequence and You have different activities that are attached to that sequence. And so once you're into like the activity, it is a rhythm game of. All right hit button whenever. This thing happens and you are doing that and trying to get a perfect score essentially. That was the ASMR one, right? That was the ASMR kind of vibe. Ver chill kind of Ver chill. it all takes place within the guy's Dream Re fun vibes here. I was just frustrated playing this game because felt like mostly tutorial And I think that is what rhythm heaven is when I don't I want to make this less review because I'm not going to give it a review. It's more just impressions. Tone of music melatonin ound and sound like the tone Conll Conan. Yeah LO. Melatonin I feel like they're doing that they would call it meo tonin But then but that's not What do you What do you say? I just thought like, yeah, the sley the sleepy pill you' made. think like this fucking sickering over here. just the f pill. I mean, yeah, you take the sleepy pill to dream, but like I didn' I didn't even think the word tone was in that word, you know? Yeah, but I don't know if they're making that pun. They better be because it's spelt like the thing that you're taking Come on, you I say all like to say, I think this game is just not for me. You know, I'm looking around I see really great reviews for this game. So I think it's more so of me thing, maybe less so the game thing. I just didn't like how much of the game felt like, all right, here's how you do this. here And like that felt like it took up most of the time of me learning what the rhythmic thing was and now it is now I'm in the activity in the activity last a minute and I'm like onto the next one U It's just the gameplay that wasn't working for me, but Tim beat it what is your review? How long it take you? I probably put about eight hours into this game, maybe seven hours in this game. I did a lot. There's a lot of different modes and I did completed the game for for the different modes available U It's a very tough game to talk about I don't think I've ever went into a review with this type of feeling where I u tend to review games that's I like Like I just don't play games that I'm not having a good time with, But this was one that I was like, I want to see it through to the end This is my first rhythm Heaven game ever. so I've always been kind of interested in it. I was kind of going into it already a little bit like I'm not sure it's going to be for me because there's like an era of the Nintendo weirdness that I didn't really grow up with. So I like I had elite beat agents on DS. That is my weird music thing that Nintendo does. And even Warioware to an extent, Wariorware was not like my childhood. That was definitely a game that I more went back to but enjoyed the novelty of it. I found a lot of fun in the micro games and the weird off beat brand of humor that the games have. likeike that all really works for me. and everything you see rhythm heaven seems veryy aligned with that And you combine a rhythm music game with that kind of weird Nintendo humor and I'm like there's a chance that this is going to be for me. And this game was definitively not for me and I feel weird saying this, but I give this game a four out of ten on the cy ofph scale. like after completing it, like I there were moments, glimpses of me being like, oh, I get it and I really like this. And they were so few and far between. And anytime I thought, oh, we're kicking it up here. It would get back to what Bless is saying, which is it feels like every single thing is you're playing a tutorial and by the time you actually get into the meat of it, you're just back to another tutorial for the next thing. That's what rhythm heaven is. and Again, just w put this out there, Bless said this We both saw the reviews and we were shocked at how high they are. But that just says this is spepeaking to the fans in Rhythm Heaven and they are getting what they want from it. But for somebody. It is definitely for somebody, but I and yeah, eighty two on metacritics. So if you're a Rhythm Heaven fan, don't take what I'm saying and make you go A man, they dropped the ball. But if you're not a rhythm heaven fan and you're like, maybe this little Be the thing that gets me into this franchise, I'm not sure it will because both Bless and I had very similar experiences of being like, hu I think that the game itself, like a four of ten on the kind of funny scale is if I remember correctly, right? So I put this below mediocre because I do think that there are frustrations with the core gameplay, which is There's a simple complexity to the game. like it is incredibly simple. It is one button press, sometimes two button presses and you're just hitting them to different rhythms The complexity comes in how they try to kind of get in your way and mess that up with the humor and all of that. And when the presentation of that all hits It's effective. but I feel like more often than not kind of empty. There's just not much going on. The music is obviously such a core part to the game. and there was a lot of tracks that I was like not on along to and it has that, you know, kind of big dance dance revolution like J pop vibe to it. And I like a lot of that, but I started to quickly realize like there's just not enough standout moments. There's not those moments of evolution to the songs that when you're you're playing like what would feel like a boss fight or something like that. It's like, oh this feels more than just a normal level. Everything is start to kind of feel very the same. And again, we keep saying this, but like the orial of it like before each different level They give you this whole. This is what this level is going to be And it's just weird because it's so simple where it all is just hit the thing. I kind of wish they just threw in And you can skip the tutorial. and I did that oftentimes and I did start to find a lot more fun in just figuring out what they were trying to ask me to do But so much of the game is based on the presentation and trying to make you laugh and trying to be offbeat and weird. And I just uh foundound the charm just wasn't for me. And I can see it being for other people Always go back to in the nineties, whenever Red and Stimpy was on TV It made me feelcomfortable I didn't like it. I didn't think it was funny. Everyone around me thought it was the funniest thing ever, but there was just something about it that I'm just like I don't like this. E that is just, I think This is very different than red and stimpy. But I just think that there is like a tone of presentation that This game has that I'm like, this one is just not for me. Andy, what's your question? If you had the magical game development wand for the magical game deevelopment Gennie Wizard Iss a geniian, was it Moonlights is a genie What would you add to this to makeake it more for you. I mean, I don't know. I just think that like the I like different rhythm games. I think that's what it comes down to. Like this is The rhythm game of this I don't really find that fun and I don't think it feels right. Like playing it on TV was very difficult, like getting you have to try the sinking and all that. and I got it pretty close, but I could always tell it was like a little more off than I wanted it to be. and they even tell you like play on handheld mode for like to minimize the latency. So I ended up switching that just to like confirm like where I was at. I was, cool. I'm definitely This is syns correctly and I'm hitting it. But I never was feeling like I was ironically in the groove of it, you know? I felt like I was fighting against the rhythm to a certain point. and that's what the point of the game is, but I just was like, well, I'm not having fun. I'm not loving the music. Qirky stuff isn't really making me laugh or like making me like smile. And even the stuff that I was like, o, that was cool. like they blocked the screen and stuff. And so you need to just like keep which is the kind of gameplay of it. all yeah, you to keep the rhythm up kindind of starts losing its luster when it's the same gimmick with just a different coat of paint every single time. Yeah. Like it really kind of feels like if you play this game for five minutes, you've played the game for ten hours. There's not much advancements. Yeah. I to jump in on what Tim saying, right? I think that was a thing that very quickly made it lose its luster for me was the repetitiveness of it where I think the overall to answer your question, I think the overall thing I would change would be the structure and this goes to earlier what Timas was saying You know I think There this game The gameplay loop of it feels non Nintendo in the way that Nintendo' always been great about tutorializing through just having you do a thing. When you play Mario, Super Mario Brosers level one, people always break down the idea of, oh, they want you to learn how to jump here. so they place the pipe here or they place the Gomba. This is the first thing you see, and then you're going to jump into the brick and then that shows the mushroom There is a There's such a natural flow to it. I even think of a very similar type of game, my opinion, Warriorware, a game that I absolutely adore. and Warrioware doesn't teach you how to do the micro games. They just throw you into the micro games because they're obvious enough for you to see how they work. And they then escalate it and escalate it and increase the difficulty slowly and then turn that into the challenge. Like Tim saying So many of the things that they're throwing you into for a Rhythm Heaven are very simple and I think don't need tutorialization. just start us off at an easy version of it and then slowly amp it up until you're like, o, okay, I see the challenge here and then you're naturally into it. I think they I think the pace is totally thrown off by the tutorialization of it. And I think the The example of when this game works is when you make it to a remix level because Essentally the game is divided up into worlds. You do the first three levels and then the last level level number four is like the final of that stretch. and it's four and five. Oh is it four and five Gotch. Which I think is I think that difference matters for for sure pointint of what you're making. Yeahah, the last level in that stretch brings all of the different elements of the previous levels before it together. And so now're going through a montage of the different levels in that world and doing them in real time. there's no tutorialization because you've already done the tutorials and those levels rock because you having to remember, okay, when this person is doing this fun thing, I press this button. When this frog is jumping on this liip pad, I have to press these buttons. You're playing a music video essentially and those remix levels is when this game sings. But I think every other element of this game or every other level in this game does not do justice to the potential of what this game can't actually give you when it all works Furthering what you're saying here. Mike raises his hand ro. I'll wait..' wait aent. Okay. I'll follow up with. Okay, Okaykay because with what you'reking about here at Bless becausecause I agree the remix levels are and after my first night playing it, your first night playing it came in and we were tal about it, I was like you didn't get to it I had guy and I was like Pay at least to the remix level because I'm starting to see what they're doing here and I'm enjoying it a lot more. So Every time you play a level, likeess was saying, there's the four and then you get the remix. Before each level, you get this tutorial teaching you how to play that thing, then you beat it, you go through When you get to the remix, Essentially it then makes it feel like those first four levels were just tutorials to get to the remix one because you need to remember all the different kind of rhythms and patterns that they're asking you to do for the different games. But I do think the remix stuff, that's where the most fun gameplay comes in. That's where the most challenging memorization comes in of needing to remember all the different combos you have to do. And on top of that, the most fun visual effects and actual quirk and humor and everything from it because it is going between the every song only has one graphic style. So one set of characters and one look to it. So it gets a little monotonous, but in the remix it is every five seconds cutting between the four different graphic styles and the four different characters That stuff's pretty cool. And the music does tend to be a bit stronger in those because I think they need a little bit more variation in the beats to add all the different kind of like rhythms that you need to hit After I got the first two remixes, I was like I didn't really enjoy the second one more than I enjoyed the first one. It didn't feel more challenging. It just doesn't feel like there's a real sense of progression to this. That's in just the main mode. but Mike Yeah I want to ask you about the other mode coming up, right? becausecause when we did see this during the Nintendo direct, I said, oh, this isn't really catching my eye. But then I did take a small little turn where we saw something very similar like Say the Sire mononster train where it is. It's got a one on one battle with a boss. you have the God Diamond aroundround you you remember moves to cast spells and fight these monsters. Is that a separate game mode? How in depth was that? Was that fun and enjoyable? Real quick. you know You know what it reminds me of It reminds me of Um when they tried to do But it remind me of like Ringfit addventure where it's like You could also work out while playing this like one v one battle mode or whatever. Yeah. And like I think One thing I'd also like to know, not only just about this mode, but The thing that I noticed was like the multiplayer was like, oh, that could be cool for party mode. So I didn't get to play any multiplayer. Okay. I will say I wantan to do a party mode I don't know what it is. I just want to jump in and do it. I do think that us being mad at the game and the multiplayer side of it. I can imagine fun there for sure. mayaybe for the wrong reasons, but that's what sometimes party type games are about. But I do think we should get that on the book. my book. So beat spell is this other mode. It is a separate mode. This game has a fair amount of modes actually, and I do think that it's an intentional part of what Rhythm Heaven is, the menus are just kind of a disaster and like there's just like a lot of stuff in this game. Like one of a perfect example of what I'm trying to get across is the main menu of this game has like Five options for you to to go into, you know, like whatever Not campaign, but like campaign or beat spell or all that stuff The number the first thing you're on. You would imagine is single player campaign or something like that. It's about rhythm heaven. And you click into it and it just gives you like a paragraph about the franchise It's like it doesn't even really answer much of anything. And I'm just like They know this is silly. Like it's weird. L they just make a lot of weird choices but it's not the Tomodachi life of weird andntilly is it is. Okay. it is. like honestly, but are you the voice tool might be ripped from one It's just a voice of like It sounded exactly like it ye. It makes weird choices that feel purposeful and I do think it adds to it. Like there' there's this I'm saying as a punch this is you're laughing with him. I Yeah. and it just I don't think they push it far enough for it to like be worth the joke. L the punchline is not as good as the setup, I think But even like when you're setting up this game like there's It sounds like every accessibility option is on. Every piece of text is being spoken to you. and some games do that, a lot of modern games and I wish more do to be able to when you're first setting up the game help people that want to hear or need have different needs This one presents it in a way that That is true, but also kind of feels like they're in on something of like This is a funny sounding voice. How much of it do you want to hear? Because like one of the first things you do in the game are choose Do you want it to read every single thing on screen? or do you only want it to kind of voice the tutorials or the miniigame type things, which that feels more like VO, you know what I mean? as opposed to like text to speech or whatever it is. Yeah. So there's that combo of it. like Bless, what would you end up doing? At first I didn't have any of it on. And then at one point I talk to you and you're like, you should turn this on because the way they read this one paragraph was pretty funny. And so I did that. I haven't turn it off yet. Yeah. that's I think part of the experience is like the goofiness of all of it Um, But time up beats Bell That was the thing for me after I kind of completed and hit credits on the main game of this, which is just like a bunch of the miniame songs and stuff. I was like, I gott to give this Beatfld thing a shot. It is its own kind of game where it's like you see it through I thought that this could have been the chance of All right, I'm not really digging this game but maybe this will bring it up. It brought it down I Oh no. Yeah. I I actively don't like this. Pheese like It just feels It feels like nonsense. I don't feel like I'm doing anything. It really just feels like more content for content's sake Um I was not vibing with it. and it was a pretty significant letd for me.am. There are other game modes where that are pretty nifty. like you can like Andy, I can see you getting really into this. There's like esssentially like drum machines that you can like just Go crazy and freestyle and make sounds and stuff, which is pretty damn awesome So there's just a lot of fun little cool things, but overall to me, this doesn't add up to be something that I would recommend to people that are fans of Nintendo, fans of rhythm games. either way, I think there are better examples of both. This being a forty dollar title is Borderline insane to me. Like this if this was a ten dollarars indie title still be like, man, I don't know that I'd recommend it for ten dollars, but for forty I'm kind of like, I'd steer away from this one. Yeah. I do want to also shout out. I know I already shouted out Melatonin. recly picked up a game called bits and Bops, which is another game highly influenced by this one. Also very fun. But one thing I'll say too is I'm surprised that I'm not more into this game, you know, especially seeing the reviews out there. because everything I look at in regards to this game as I'm playing and I'm like, this should work on me. I love Warrioware, I love rhythm games. I like the indie games that emulate this game. I even like the art style of this game. I like the energy of this game, right? When I see the visuals and I see the different kind of minig games that we're doing and they're like, hey, we're going to throw a pair at you and use your biceps to juggle the pairs on rhythm. I'm like, yeah, that's I love that type of shit. but The big thing that just brings me down is just the gameplay loop of it. And one of the things that I saw somebody mention earlier is can you skip the tutorials? You can skip the tutorials. I don't think the game is designed in a way that it wants you to skip the tutorials though. My thing is if I skip the tutorial I will be in a place of like, okay, but I don't know what to do. You know, I think my argument is more so I think they could start you off at the most simplest version of the thing and then level you up in the way that you get in a lot of Nintendo games that tutorial liizes through game design, you know? I don't want the game to tell me, all right, now you do this. Now do it three times. And then once you do it three times you'll get three check markarks and now you're ready for the full game. It feels too tutorialized in a way that I wish it was a bit more like Here's the simple version of the thing. press the buttons you figured it out now we're going to thr twist at you Now we're going throw another twist at youah. Like I think there's a natural way of doing it that I would have ennjoyed more, but ultimately I just to I'm surprised that I'm not more into this. This should me too. Me too. I fully agree with you there. There were a couple moments like very few, but I'd say like two or three moments that I laughed. I actually laughed at what I was doing out loud. So it's like there's stuff here and they they are trying I just I feel like for the highs that I get, it just makes me realize like how not a great time I'm having with the rest of it where I'm like I wish every game every level had something that at least made me smirk. att least made me go like, okay, that little fun twist was was a good one, but I just feel like often it's the same twist with just a different coat of paint. So Yeah, not that's a bummer big on that one. U, Jose Cortez. Super Chats ins saying, how about Mexico?ico I alone. They broke the curse the curse. Yeah Well forget about that end Well, I mean, they're I mean, there's just more teams and like the tournament now, right Yeah, but they're on the round of sixteen and they get to play back in Mexico again for that round. Dude. It has a lot There' a lot of energy right now for the Mexican national team to get behind and rally. saw I saw somebody online after Mexico one. they were like, brring us the USA on july fourth. its calm down. You say tonight. Spoo mix in the chat says this is great. Thank you for saying this I didn't need to buy a switch to. this game's on switch one So now you're fucked You have to buy them h I'm That's all I got for Rhythm Heaven Anything you want to tell about Mike. I mean, I have been playing a lot of games, a lot of Zelda games, as many people know. I am now on to Skyward Sword. I have completed Twilight Princess and Wind Waker since we kind of last caught up about my Zelda journey, right? We know that I really fell in love with Occaraough time. I really enjoyed Mindjora's Mask and what that was built on. I dove straight into Windwaker on the W U first time ever using a W U holding the Wi U game pad. What a blast that was. That W U game pad pretty fucking comfortable and pretty niff. I love this. Okay. so shout out if you are a W U, Jibroni. Hey, I'm sorry I missed it. prettyty fucking fun. like that a lot. I then moving forward Windwaker was amazing. The art style, the sense of adventure, the story. That's a must play, okay? I don't want to get up too much time on the podcast because I can go crazy on this thing. Well while we're on the topic ofintendo. I do want to shout out something out because I'm going to say at the end of last year, we did our switch two review six months later and I think I was ret down on the switch two. I think within the last couple of months backack up And what do why I'm in a next hole. You're in next hole by And you're finally playing the game in a way that you feel is acceptable in modern time. Exactly, right. playaying Xenob Bake Chronicles, defeinive Edition on this Nintendo Switch two is making me fall in love with this platform in the way that like I want to fall in love with the Nintendo device, but then also Starfox. like and evenhym Heaven even though I didn't I'm not liking Rhythm Heaven. There is a flow right now in terms of releases and I'm I'm doing this I went on Amazon, I bought a bag for my Switch two specifically like a nicer over the shoulder bag because I'm like, yo, I'm upgrade. If I'm on the bart, like I want to hold this thing in a way that I like and all this stuff. I'm bringing my Switch two to work We're back We're back. We're back. I love to hear that. had that for you. And he was the last time you played your switch too Oh shit yeah. That's Yeah yeah, that's right,x. I'll tell you what though, my God, this slay aspire to spepecial. I heard you've been playing more of it. I'm so it's my before bed game That and Batman right now. We got to do c op. The best. Yeah, we gott do c op. We gotta try that I haven't tried Roger play c op. Roger won't play c op with this then But I love the Sigh Aspire two, so many great games, just playing a bunch of it, y'all. I'm not never stopping You playing like six hours at night. You're insane. You really do.ike I don't know how you have that in you man. God. Sky says, how of do I play my switch two is the question. Answered Please, I want to know Sky. Oh how it was Sky? I thought they were talking to YouTube. Oh my switched to pretty often. What are you plan on there besides Star Fox. It's been a lot starf. Rhythm. I guess that makes sense. Yeah. And then rhythm heaven. Yeahah. And then I wait Mario Wonder, swwitch to Bellbell Park, all that stuff.. Oh, you did. I beat the campaign in Mario tenennis the campaign. I fuc I were in your pants. I was in m. It was a very Oh ye. And yeah, I hated myself. that part. I really did. I forgot Mario Tenis came out this year. Yeah. because if my thing was like last year week. The launch of the Switch two happens and you know, I was so excited about it. And I feel like there was like this nice rhythm where like Logan Planet IGN was like playing and beating every single like Nintendo published game. like and almost trying one hundred percent it if not actually achieving that. And I was like, motivated by that. I was like, you know what? I'm going to try to stick and I want to beat all these games. And I was doing very, very well. and it started hing no point where I'm all right I can't begin. Yeah, It's too many But that's why I was like I I wanted to make sure I saw Mario Tnis to the end, but I wish I had that time back if I'm being real. I could have been playing Near Automeda, Edie. Oh my go, you would have loveved Near Automeda. In recent years, my most played platform has been rotating a little bit. because like I think probably probably two years ago would have been PlayStation. Last year, my most played platform was PC I could see this here, it may be being swished Like between fire Red, funny enough, but like fire Red and then like this playing Xeno Blade and some of these other games this fall, if Occarina makes it in the year, right? there's going to be that. Maybe fire Emblem Fortuness Weave is a big one. I have speaking I have to decline Barrett's trade requests You resond a trade. don't talk her. You you don't want to trade You don't want Wolverine No and not for a fire emblem no What are you trying to about what read Don't try to do this. thing Logan doesn't have it? Yeah you're the insomnac Cater.ater You know, I just think're I think they're atheist you. Actually that's a good question is like, how would y' allall divide up your pllatform Gaming This year has been very split even between Nintendo PC and Playation. I'm sorry, Xox. I haveven picked up Xbox though Mza a lot of work on Or was you actually played on an Xbox, not on PC? Yeah. I prefer a console for that game. I've always played Fortw on Xbox, and so it kind of feels right. Yeah. Mike what to buy you Well I've played nothing but Zelda last far the year. And so like when we think about it Andy, it's like allegedly Mike was playing on a switch, you know what mean course Yeahah, the Wi U. Yeah, we call it the W U So like when I look back on it, I would say I'm playing more on Nintendo, but technically it was like a lot of PC playing. So I would still say PC is my front runner Th then we'll follow that up with Nintendo, Xbox quickly behind that PlayStation, I think so far this year has got nothing out of me Be I didn't jump in into Sorrowos. And I haven't, you know, Wolverine will be my next big exclusive on PlayStation. That's it Yeah Edy PC Yeah, PC Eeam deck What's what's the divide there though PCCndeck Yeah Um Damn I mean, well Steambg is really only just the nighttime thing. Like that's where I want to get around if say the Syireon or or in prior years, whatever small indie title that's functional on Steam Deck, I will there But for the most part, it's like I I love my monitor too much and my gaming PC setup too much to to concede that, you know Yeah um I got the steam machine at home though and when I do want to like chill out and not be on the, you know, playing force on there a decent amount and I really enjoy it ot of Rg ally for me That's my number what is your split then would you say Rw ally versus? I mean, it will always be the desk probably. I would say the desk is like ninety percent. I don't pick up the switch and play that handheld. So the other ten percent is in bettered travel with the Rag Allwi. L lot of Rog ally time though. Let me tell you. They played all James Bond on the Rog Ally Remember that? Wow. I'm playing all of Batman on the R Ally, and everything sllay aspires on the Rgog Ally Lego Batman Lego batm Yeah ye. U, there's a platform Today. that might begin some more time I have a charging right now in the office. It's my PlayStation Vita Now, I don't know I don't know What kind of conversations I can have? There's never been a better time to buy games on the Playstation. I have digital storefont. at what point can we go can we all go it's okay to pirate PlayStation Vita when they're shutting down the store? Like should I wait till next year? because I'm I'm picking up my Vita and I'm I'm I'm giving it a life. Vita means life. I'm making this thing live What's your goal? I haven't heard about this. This is I'll talk to more about my gol off. Oh off likeike I don't how much I can talk about. If you want me to bring a bunch of my games in I'm a very large library. I'm stuffing my Vito with video games is all I'm saying Oh Okay. I'm making I think playable. I stuffed mine with all the metal gears. If you remember you had to get like the metal gears and all thats like mine has all the metal gears on it. Nice. Yeah pretty lit. I booted up my Vita right now. I have downloaded on their reszo gun Svered Pa four, Glden. I also have a PS. I might have TV You ever used that No I mean, I used it at IGN for capture and stuff, but I didn't have it myself. I native on that AY and Thor is changing the game. It's crazy, right? You want What? Yeah, my retetroid poocket five still getting a lot of play with that type of stuff Um Yeah, my breakdown is not what I wish it was. Like I My dream PC if maxed out, just like this thing is a goddamn beast. And I still find myself preferring PS five. It really. Dude, it just sucks, but I get that also it's crazy. I played first lightight on PS five. Me too. F firstirst lightight and Resident evvil Recquium our two games and some of that just comes down to like what codes do we have access to to be able to between us, I think R and Eil, PC wasn't an option when I first got it and then Bond it was u thing I've just been having so many issues like It's not even about the tweaking, the settings and the PC stuff. it is the audio. like PC audio for home theater and like having surround like Dolby Atmos I don't know why. it just will not work correctly. And like everyone's like, oh, you just do this. It's like, all right, man. L I'm telling you, I've done that. And there's just always some weird problems. whereereas I played on PS five and I'm like, This just sounds so much better. Windows audio has never been the never been the sucks, man. Yeah, it's been kind of a bummer for me ' it's like I really wanted to just go full on to the PC side. but yeah, the audio stuff and even just like the dual sense support on PS five just goes so far from me and I really care about that stuff for for immersion and all of that. but I sa the weird thing of PC being more of an indie machine for me. because if I'm getting a code for PC if I'm buying a game for PC, usually it's going to be something indie or maybe a GRPG. Like clear obscure I played on PC because I wanted to That is like a genre of game I associate with taking around, right? I don't know why I don't go whole AA for PC. like consistently. There's something about it that I still want to do that on console. Yeah If you're on meboard mouse, you would Yeah. I think that's like that's the big differentiator for me If whatever big shooter comes out and I can't If I have to pay on controller I'm like I'll just wait for keyboard mouse. Yeah that's yeah But I also think less like you have a PS five proro, right? And It's like your PC is not beating that I don't Sure. No, but their PC has more convenience factor for me because my PSI pro is out in the living room. I'm a hermit. I like hang out hanging out in my room, playing games on my monitor or on my steam deck. And that really is like it's that weird little preference on like game by game of like, what's the way I want to do this? becausecause like for me, I would say it's pretty evenly split between Steam Deck, PS five and then Switch and obviously Switch is more just is it a Nintendo game? I'm playing it there. Yeah. Like because I have all these other options, I don't see my as huge of a fan I am of third party games coming to Switch two for the health of that system and I want that to succeed because that means more better Nintendo games will come out. I don't think I'm ever going to play a third party game on Switch Why would I rightight? Like when especially when I the steam deck and it's like I I' I'm going to play do all of only M motions switch that's gonna be my Oh really? Motion controls. Okay, G. Let me tell you about a little bit. Syward sword, man. Let me tell you about motion controls. okay? There I was. I finish windwakeer, I go, you can't get any better. I really nappy. Can I go And out the window Andy because manano manan Twilight prrincess is hands down the best. okay? There I am tal This shit is l When you meet I'm a wolf boy now. When you meet Midna is a full on lady, you know what I mean? Like this is crazy, right Now get this, get this Throw all out that throw all that out the window. Yeah. Ocarina of time, Majora' mask. Windway. Can you say Occarina Don't worry about a say to Rayland, okay Twilight prrincess, Bundle that up throw that shit out the window. We tal Be Skywardward swword is the answer, okay? Motion controls. Unbelievable story. The skylck just lost everybody borning into the world where you get a bird and now Zelda's on a hunt to go get stronger because you don't know what's going on because a bad guy's out there trying to summon his The demon Lord is trying to suon the kind of funny games to to everybody.
