Of course, guys, let's jump into it. Let's begin with, topic of the show Star Fox review That is today's topic of the show. We're diving deep into this brand new Sitch to game. off course J everyone knows rom the Nintendo description, join Fox McLeod and the Star Fox team as you fight to protect the liilLap system from the clutches of the evil scientist, Dr. Andros. Take to the skies and stars as you blast your way through enemies in this action packed adventure. This cinematic take on the Star Fox sixty four story features new fully fully voice dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch twoI systemy C currently on sale digitally for fifty dollars forty ninell, ars ninety nineents and physically nine, n ninety nineents for sixty doll. This is coming from the team t Velen Studios.. someome great connections with us and Velin Studios over the years, Midnight Murder Club you might remember them from, Knockout City you might remember them from. and of course, Martyr Kart liive homeome circuit. So con relations to them You know, getting to the finish line with this one, I gave you some of the rund downowns, but you know, new voice acting scenes and bonus scenes in the campaign difficulty settings for your campaign experience, challenge mode, battle mode with four V four multiplayer. and of course my favorite thing that I'm looking forward to Face scan yourself as one of the mercenary squads in Fun Nintendo voice chats with the all new avatars, which is very, very exciting. Very exciting. Oh That's system sell. getet ready.illerp. So that's kind of your rundown. Of course, Andy, Tim, andm Bless all have had experiences with the game. I'm gonna go to our Star Fox to kick it all off. Tim Getty' Tim, before we get into a review your score, if you could just give the people maybe they don't know what Starfox is. This is a reintroduction of Star Fox to many new people who maybe just seen just the Mario movie, right and are coming in new. what is Star Fox the game? And then give me your review and your thoughts of the new game. So Starfox, the franchise has been many things over the years ironically, haven't been that many on rails space shooters in the franchise. The best ones have been that But when you look at Starfox command on the DS, that was a bit more of a a real time tactical strategy game kind of U and then the Star Fox Asault was Not even a third on rails shooters and it was also a get out of your R wing run around shoot and that stuff didn't really work that well. and Starfox zero was way more motion control type of like W you gimmick game. But when you go back to it, Starfox on the Super Nintendo, Star Fox sixty four and the Star Fox sixty four three D on the three D S are all Linear on rails space shooters. You are flying around in your Rwing and the majority of the levels are very arcady. You are trying to get high scores. You are trying to maximize your routes and paths throughout levels that are very bite sized and meant for replayability and to maximize combos of shhooting enemies in groups because if you kill more than one enemy at a time with a homing blast, you get bonus points and then you get medals and the medals unlock things.. It is very much a old school arcade style linear ase shooter On top of that, it is also an incredibly cinematic gameplay experience. There is a lot of voice acting, there is epic orchestral music, and dating back all the way to the Super Nintendo that couldn't have those things There was a clear attempt for that. There was a energy to that game like the they didn't have actual voice acting, but it had the little But like they wouldn't make sounds for voices, which even that time was semi a novelty. It might be the first game I could remember that did that type of thing. And then Star Fox sixty four Very much one of the first games like with full on voice acting like proper. and we're talking about some of the most iconic for better or worse lines and performances in in history as far as I'm concern Are you gonna to say it? Do a barrel roll. Thank. Yeah, yeah. I forot a big one. But like that's the thing is it's like, yeah, we could can talk about that, but there's like, there's dozens of lines in this game that are seared into a generation of kids' brains. like the exact intonation of how they're said exactly. And it's like so I do think that getting to this remake of Star Fox sixty four that is overall a very faithful remake of the game. It's going to come with a lot of opinions on those performances because of how iconic they are So let's talk about your time with this brand new game on the swwitch two. You've had the experience. whyy don't you deep dive me into your review and your score Tim So Star Fox sixty four in its multiple iterations over the years is Undeniably my number one or two most beaten video game throughout my life Super Mario Brrosers O and Star Fox sixty four are two games that I go out of my way to make sure that every year, at least I play through them And Mario one, I just really love speedrunning that game and trying to make sure like I can keep my sub ten minute run of the entire thing. And then Star Fox sixty four is just, I just have a lot of fun playing it. I always talk about Spider Man and Spider Man two and Miles Morales on PlayStation, which sometimes I'll just boot it up just to swing around And there's something about the feeling of the R wing and just the vibes that the game gives off that I am just very obsessed with. So I go back to this a lot. And also it's endlessly replayable because of the, I think kind of high skill ceiling that the game has, Not to say that I'm the best at it by any means, but I have a lot of fun trying to be And I just love the feel of it all and the iconic lines and the music and everything and the boss fights and the fact that it's like challenging to get to some of the different paths. So when I replay it, even if I'm doing it every year I do feel like I just like, I don't do the whole game. I just do like one path and I'll be all right next year, I'll do a different path or whatever And I love that. Andy. And for people that know or don't have a whole lot of history with Star Fox Why is it a game that you are able to play so many times? Because it's really designed around replays. So you are going through from there's a whole like galaxy of planets that you're going through, right? And no matter what you're starting on Coronaria and you're ending up somewhere I want to say there's like six levels in every path that you're going to do, but what the in between ones are are always different depending on different Choices you make, paths you go down, Lvels of accomplishment. So for example, like some of the requirements would be like Go through this like There's like an obstacle course and don't crash during the obstacle course and that will be the trigger to get you to go on a different path to a different level. Another one is if you take too long to face a boss boss will hit one of the characters and the character crashes out on a different planet. So the next level, you have to go save them from that planet that you wouldn't have went to otherwise. So it's kind of a mix of a bunch of different things, but it's incentivizing you to want to play the game over and over, not just because You're like, oh, I like the game and I want to be better at it, like arcade the high score type stuff. but actually being able to see this full game requires minimum three full playthroughs. Each playthrough is when you have played this every year for thirty years Takes about forty five minutes. I can imagine it taking a little longer if it's your first time, not much longer, maybe an hour Um And yeah, so you go through it, especially like someone like me like just to say it for this, I have put about thirteen hours into this game so far like this version of the game. I've beat it Over ten times I stopped counting at a certain point, but like I want to say probably like thirteen or fourteen. And this is the first time I really go in and I'm trying to like actually get all the medals and do things that some little Timmy could not have done no matter how hard I tried back in the day. L backack in the day, it was hard for me to even just like beat the hard path. You know what I mean? And now I'm like doing that not with my eyes closed, but pretty much U, So yeah, really, really into it all to my score, I'll say this here. This is a great game. This is a remake of one of my favorite games ever. I'm going to give it an eight point five because Things that I love about this remake that I think make it the definitive way to play this game. I don't think every single thing is definitive. I literally think that it's line to line. There'll be like dialogue changes that I'm like, o man, I really liked what they said before better than what they have here. But for every one of those, there's the opposite as well. And I think that overall the game Beeles Exactly how it should. Starfuck sixty four always felt perfect to me, but there was a lot of slowdown it being on N sixty four, evenven the three D S version had a lot of that. This just is flawless. It runs incredibly well. The game is stunning. The game is beautiful and it is based off of very simple level layouts in terms of shapes and geometry and stuff. So it's not like it's I'm saying that this is as pretty as gears of warar e day or whatever. But what they have and the style they go with, I think really suits the game. The look of the characters themselves is definitely a shock. Like when we first saw them, it was like incredibly disappointing to me. I'm like, oh, this is not what I want and Playing through the game, It hasn't fully changed my mind on that. Like I don't really love how they look in the cutscenes and just like as characters. world that they're building and how quotequote serious they're taking this very cinematic game. I actually think it was the right call at the end of the day and I think that this is probably the best step forward for them to hopefully turn this Uteeenth remake into the start of a franchise where the next Star Fox game I do think we'll get because I do think this will do well I think that willll finally be freed from the shackles of Star Fox sixty four. But those shackles are golden and amazing and one of my favorite games ever. so I can't complain Thank you for a great review and deep dive on that. Let's go around to our other panelists. Blessig go go to you. Talk to me about your history with Star Fox sixty four first. and then of course, your experience playing this. Yeah, I'm not the biggest Starfox person, believe it or not. You know, I grew up with Nty four Nty four is up there as one of my favorite consoles between that and the PS two, right. I've always viewed Star Fox as like a friend game for me It was the game that like I'll go to school in my friends at school would be talking about like, yo, Starox, this Starfox that and I'm like,o You ever heard about this game called Jet four Semina? Let's talk about a real Nty four game I would play it at friends' houses, right I would watch them play and like most of my experience growing up with Fox McLleod was Smash Bros and then Smash Bros a brawl and the Smash Bros ultimate, right? Like Fox has always been that character and I've learned more about Fox and Star Fox through Sash and through just Hearing friends talk about it as opposed to me actually getting my hands on the game, though I play it every now and then. the original Star Fox sixty four last time I played through it was when it came to Nintendo Switch online when they when they released the N sixty four online expansion pack for the Switch. And so like I have that experience, but I'm not nearly the super fan that Tim is. That said, playing Starfox this new remake, I think it hass been a fantastic time so far, right I It been blown away by the presentation. I'd say even the character models, the character designs have grown on me. still don't love them, right? Stsill not like, yeah, I love that they went this direction, but I think they hit better when you're playing the game as opposed to getting that reveal in the trailer. And maybe that's just like my mind's gotten used to seeing these. but they aren't as bad as it felt when we saw the original reveal I think it's complemented by everything else when we're talking about visual presentation. I loved flying through Cornaria for the first time, right? Like flying over the water and seeing how beautiful and vibrant everything is, seeing the environments we're talking about. you know, the original Star Fox sixty four, not necessarily being like the highest reality game because it's Nty four game, but I booted up that version to play through Cornneria after playing this remix version and it's so cool seeing how well they translate these games one for one, both the mechanics, how they play, but then yeah, also visually seeing the upgrade and how well translated everything is I think works so well. I think as a remake, this is so successful. and granted, I'm saying that's as somebody who's not as precious about the source material. I'm sure hearing Tim talking about like, oh man, I wish this line was better, but I do like this line. I don't have that level of detail with it when as I'm receiving it. So for me all of it sounds good all of it looks good and this is This is the kind of game that I would like to see more of. Like I hope they let Velen Studios continue to cook in the Star Fox universe because playing this I'm not going to say it felt like playing. game, but it does feel like playing the kind of game I want to see more. I don't know if that makes sense. L This is something that If I walked into an arcade and I saw a modern Star Fox machine, I'd get so hyped. somethingomething about this just as a experience works so well and as a video game works well too. Even though yeah, like a playthrough for me, my first playthrough I'd say it was poly R our fifteen hour thirty. I was dying a lot, right? because I don't know the routes as well and like all the mechanics all seeing levels that I didn't see when I played my first time on the sixty four expanship pass. And so you know, I think learning those mechanics does actually stretch the time out a little bit for your first playthrough Yeah, this is the kind of game I'd love to play over and over again, right or see at like a function and be like,o, let's get on that Star Fox real quick or see an arcade or something. It kind of gives me that experience. And I miss that experience. For me, that's really cool, really novel and what they have here with the full package, I think is really dope That's great bless. Yeah. I don't have a full review score because I'm putting nearly as much time as Tim has put into it, but I'm also sitting at around that great. Okay? Yeah Andy Cortez, if there's anyone on this panel that would actually be flying around in an R wing and be joining Fox MitCloud up in the sky, it would be you. Thank you. Thank you, Mike. That's a big compliment. That's a big compliment. favorite. I such a a. such a strong words, just you and out of your mouth, man. How you pty I don't Oh for at the engineers. I think that's something I could aord to HR. like he told me I could be your pppy. I have a big past with Starfox. I love Star Fox growing up. It's never a game that I owned. It was always a game that my one of my closest friends had at his house and I played the shit out of it and we like Until Tim maybe gettingetting around the time of like the rumored Star Fox, whatever thing. like it wasn't until then that Tim brought up, Yeahah, it takes you about forty five minutes to an hour for a playthrough. I was like, oh shit As a kid, it felt like it was a lifetime. It felt like it was a forever game because we kept on going in and all of us would, you know, you know take tries at the on the controller or whatever. So like I never owned this game, but I played the hell out of it growing up. And always fucked with the idea of being a pilot and you know, I loveved the characters in the world And I think if you I mean, I've said several times regarding a lot of different games and a lot of different you know, game genres. I've always been of the mind that If it's a car combat game That's something I would have Really, really played and enjoyed as a ten year old and something that I've grown out of now. It's not something that I look at and go I want to play that and enjoy that. and I thought I'd feel the same way about this Star Fox And any game that's sort of like an on rail shooter on on rails like flying you know, video game. but there might be some sections where you're, you know, you're off the tether and now you can kind of fly wherever I I would have assumed I felt the same way about that And a lot of it A lot of that changed with Star Fox because I I love how it's like it's such a short game but there's so much meat on the bone. Yeah. And I love any time and had completely forgot one of the coolest aspects of Star Fox is When you're out of a mission And somebody you know, goes down, their ship goes down, Falcoco crashes Peppy gets killed or whatever, not kill, but you know, the ship is down for repair. You don't have them the next mission. And that there's such an own it's so like kind of even lame to kind of explain. But there's like a feeling of ownership like I'm the captain and I let my I let my homeomie down. Well, dude, like just to jump in there. It's like I love that as well. And it really is if you let your homeie down, the game experience becomes worse for you. Yeah. they're not there the next m. whichich means they're not talking, whichich means the game is a lot emptier and like you just kind of have to sit with it. It's a really weird. It's so cool. It's so cool. and it's something it's a mechanic that I hadn't even really thought a whole lot about and had completely forgot was an aspect of Star Fox period. and it's really, really cool to kind of re experperience that And I won't give a review score because I'm with bless. I have not played as much as Tim Um, because legitimly I forgot I was given a code and that's on me. I had a lot of travel last week, Mike. had a lot of tra last week. had a lot of travel, which is really, really bad because I like man, if I would just take this switch, I could have play the sh out of this in the hotel, right? I I really really enjoyed my time with it. and Like, I think it's a beautiful game. I'd never quite hated the art style maybe most people felt actually feel like the internet kind of was kind of split on it anyway, but I I love the fidelity of them. It was just the proportions of like how the characters looked in action, I think it looks freaking fantastic. Bellen Studio was really knocked out of the park with Like nailing an art style and it being as optimized as it is, it runs great And a lot of really neat quirks about the control schemes that I'm stoked to get into later in the podcast First off extxtremely disappointed and sad that there are no gyroil controls donon't understand how that's a thing Um We had just seen Switch spports Rort againg different studiosough, but like hold the Joy con and control your air glider And it's like I would love to just kind of like use my glider to or use, you know, because it could be kind of tough to aim sometimes unless you're like doing the lock on or whatever But it plays great. It sounds great. The soundtack is freaking phenomenal. And again, I just love that ownership of going from mission to mission and you let somebody down. so they're not there the next time and they're not in your ear you know, Yp and ask for backup and be like good shot Fox or whatever Again, we are building we are This remake is you know, building off the back of Starfox sixty four, right? It is a remake of that video game If anything, I hope this game findinds a lot of success And we say this a lot with with a lot of other games. It's like, I would love to see the next one I would kill to see Yeah a full ass sequel from Velen with with you know, the shackles pulled off in terms of like, hey, we don't have to be so tried and true to what that old game to what sixty four was. We don't have to be like, we don't have to make it as one for one as possible, even though there's a lot of changes they make here and there, but does a modern Star Fox sixty four game look like with this the ownership of of your crew, you know, a bit more modernized riding the changes that can happen within levels. It's a lot of fun and it's way more fun than I would have expected myself to have. So yeah, I think it's like a really, really solid remake that they did here. Something I want to add in there too is this game put me on to some of the design genius of the original game. Like Tim brought up like, hey, if you Maybe fly through this obstacle that then opens up another route and I think there's cool that they do with that here where When you have new cutscenes here that give more context to all right we're going this way or why why are we going this way instead? right? So I think that added context is cool. But then also in game, I'm sure maybe this voice line exists in the original, but You know, Well, actually, I replayed the origin level D didn'tar this voice line. As I was playing through Cornaria and this, right? There's a moment where they're like, oh yeah, you know, bet you can't do this and I'm like, as I'm playing, I'm like I'm would do it. and I did it, not even think about the fact that I would open another level. I didn't know that that's how you unlock that level. I just did it because Where my pals B challenging you. Challenging you. was like I would to do it for fun. Dn't realize u I was talking to him later. He's like Oh, yeah, if you do this, like, that'll open up this. And I was like, Ohh, that's how I opened that up didid not even think about that. And I think there's so much potential with What you can do in modern times with like voice acting and cutscenes and adding in more context around letting players discover and explore through different routes. That would be so cool to see if Ven have the freedom of not being not having to just remake the NT four game, which They've done a really great job job with, but in a new experience doing that stuff. I think you can go crazy with that kind with that idea. Well I want to hold you guys off because there are super chats coming in about the future of Starfox and what you guys would like to see. But I want to talk about the now here Before we do that, of course, thank you all for your reviews, your experiences so far. I'm gonna let you now take to the skies and fly in the next part of this podcast. but also remind all of you that there's also a demo available as well. Pilots. now is the time. I want you to take me for a journey. I want you to talk all about this game. I kept you on rails. Now let's bust off the rails here, Tim. Where do you want to go with the conversation? I want you to get these guys involved with. There's a lot of places. There's a lot more to talk about for this game for this remake in particular because there's a lot of we spend a lot of the time talking about the old stuff and how it's remade. There is a lot of new stuff too or at least a lot of tweaks to the old stuff that kind of makes this what it is. Let's start with the controls. Andy was talking about being upset with the lack of motion controls. I am as well. and before people jumped down my throat about this for the ten years I've complained about Star Fox Zero and its fault being its control scheme Game's fault was it was designed around a overly complicated gyro system. It was more about the Wi U game pattern and using the dual screens controlling the ship and aiming with the gyro. But that meant that a lot of the games levels that they because Zero wasn't a one to one remake of sixty four. It was more just like a spiritual remake of it. And a lot of the changes they made were adding functions where we were running around as little robots with gyro stuff that I just never vibed with the never liked I'm really with Andy that I am surprised that there isn't some sort of control with the analog stick to move your ship and then gyrove to aim because that would have been amazing. It would have broke the game a little bit. I still think it should have been an option. like they kind of allow you to break the game in other ways, so I'm a little surprised that it wasn't there But it's Nintendo and they always have the most bare bones ass options and it's surprises me somehow still. It's like I should stop being surprised. I should just expect it, but it lets me down because it's like I hate it when I'm playing a game and there's an option that I'm looking for and it's not there. If I'm thinking about it, it should be there, especially for a remake of an old game. You know what I mean? That's like, especially when I know how good Nintendo has, how good the Pro Croller two is at that stuff Yeah, it's not me expecting gyro controls on a Playsttation game. L this is Nintendo. like they put Gyro in everything, it feels like I feel like Patoon put people onto Gyro. Yeahes. ye, absolutely. And so in place of D controls are not in impive, but they do not have jve controls, but they do have mouse controls, which is the switch to, you know big, big features. Oh, use your jooy clls that's a mouse. shhit fuck it sucks. It's so long. It's bad. It is actually bad and they should be embarrassed. Like I can see some sickos out there being like, this is awesome I I can't imagine it though, man. It's like I've given it multiple shots now. It partart of it is like kind of what we want to an extent of being able to aim the cursor, but it also is aiming your ship. Like you are controlling your ship and the cursor, just like the normal game, but instead of the analog, you're using the mouse. It never quite feels right. You have to do it in cockpit view, which really kind of obscures a lot of your vision of the beautiful levels So the pros are, it's easier to aim on the enemies. The cons are, it's harder to see any of the enemies and it's harder to see anything. And it's just orienting. It never feels quite right in your hand on the controller with the control scheme for it. I'm very let down with the mouse controls, specifically with how much they've been focusing on that being like, Cool thing. I ended up doing a decent amount with mouse controls. like I played a decent amount of it Um, and I was I was looking all over for these little stupid three D printed mousing chassis that I bought, right? And it's it's like a little thing that you just put the Joy C inside of and it makes it a lot more comfortable to hold And it feels a lot more like a mouse to it Now, unfortunately, I only found the left one And I was like, damn. I don't have I lost the right one, I guess. This is I only had the left one And I put Wh even have one, that's hilarious. And it's Yeahah, it's weird. But I put the left Jooy Con in there And it still works So it works you could do a reverse tin I didn't know that was the thing. So the left joy con I am using as the mouse. Okay. Oh okay. Oh I see. And the right Joy con I am using to control the sh. Oh, that's nice. Just like you would have, you could reverse them It's fucking odd. Okay. now the only unfortunate thing though is that little mouse chassis covers up some of the face buttons.. The face buttons are in a more uncomfortable spot because they are reversed But even more But the actual clicking of the left click feels way more like a mouse because you are clicking the like becausecause you're using the left Joy con in your right hand, that button feels so much nicer to. it rules. see it? It feels so much better the like, but the face buttons, like I wish I could map the missile buttons to something else because you want to lock on your missiles or your bombs or whatever. and that's easiest thing to do, but I was like, damn, I actually like the way this feels a lot more. Now imagine this, but with like a little rounded edge where it feels like an actual mount. It was actually really cool, but unfortunately you couldn't reach the bomb. So I eventually had to give up on that And I did just take the thing out of the chassis and play a bit more Normally with the left joy on my left hand, right in my right hand. and, um I Yeah, it's not awesome. It's not like the coolest experience. I think there are some things that could be changed And I was even surprised to see options for ways to kind of lower motion sickness because When you do a barrel roll or when you want to do a U turn or a, you know, the flip or whatever It has an option to turn off the cockpit for motating which is because otherwise you're in first person and you're just in it is while you're in Yeah while you're in first person cockpick mode., you will see your whole stranges do it. So you could turn off to where it's like, hey, that shit doesn't rotate so it doesn't like mess with people with. I was like, o, I'm surprised you even have that to be honest with you.. It was like I did find myself having More fun on spots where I had to be a lot more precise where you're fighting an enemy, it's like There's the moving target you have to hit as opposed to like I feel like when you're just kind of flying on the on rail sections, you can do a lot of like lock on and things like that. But there are certain sections where you have to be really, really precise and the mouse controls certainly helped out a lot with that. And I felt you know a lot more fun I had a lot more fun because I felt like I was being more skillful in that but I was Again, just yeah, super let down about there being no gyro because I just feel like Almost every game has gyro like I mean metroid Prime four, like my experience was entirely enhanced by how awesome the gyro controls. Same. Absolutely. Now I know you guys play styles and I know probably you all played by yourself, but there is a co op situation here where it's similar to Donkey Kong Bonanza. someone takes over the flight controls and someone is the shooting controls Did you try that or is that just mouse controls I didn'ttbody doing that. You know, it's funny. You know what I mean? Like there is a moment here that it's like a father son, a family type situation going on. I haven't kindind of I need to try it solo because I want to maybe that'll solve my problem. you want, Yeahah, yeah. 'cause I want to be able to move the ship and control the The Rical Radical separately. Yeah. I'm s after the show. Yeah, because the way yeah, the ws are so interesting the way I just use the controls. I just played a normal way. J just use your controllers. Oh, I did that too. Okay. Yeah. I mean, I play the most of it like that, but like o. But I'm just saying like It's such a gyro first you know, Pragmata's got gyros on on Switch. likeike there's Gyro's everywhere except for this game. Can I tell you what fucked me up Well first of I want to acknowledge because people and are going back forth. I I finished the game. I just didn't finish the game enough times to where I felt comfortable giving a score because that's kind of game that it is. Yeah. I know it' an hour a half game. I beat the hour and a half game. The difficulty I had was figuring out if I wanted to play inverted or not. Yeah. because I know for a flight game, it's like, oh, yeah, you want to play inverted, but something about the way this game moves, I could not figure out what So That's crazy, right? Because Starwox sixty four on the N sixty four, I first played it at my friend Pierre's house and it broke my brain because it was inverted and'm like I don't understand this. And then all of a sudden after a couple of plays, I'm like, oh wait, this is how things should work. I totally get it. And that's how it's been in my mind for. thirty years. I don't know why, but playing this new one, I think it's because of how modern it looks I'm playing uninverted. Oh And I'm just like an inverted immedately and And I'm just like I dont It's the exact same game that I've played hundreds of times. Why is it my brain working this way? And I think it's because in modern times, I think we're used to games that aren't solely in a cockpit flying that are like cockpit flying is just like an element of other things you're doing, right? Like I can't think of an example right now, but like a Rian clank has parts like that or something, whatever You you werere like getting into different situations, right Yeah. And I think because of that, yeah, I I played this game almost exclusively uninverted. I would love to have rememapped the amount of times that I am, you know, when you're using the mouse controls, the trigger is the shoot button But when you're in third person mode, the standard way to play A is your shoot. And there's no way to like I so badly just wanted Shoot to be on the trigger you know, bar roll or lean or whatever on the R you know Z or whatever the smaller buttons are R one R two Yeah. Like I would have loved to have just had those there because it just feels like I want to be using the trigger button to shoot like I'm in a cockpit and it just so switching over between those two things felt like Those are two separate experiences. Oh yeah, they. when I would switch to mouse when I'm like, oh, that's right. tririggers back on the mouse on the trigger. like you would expect it. And then if there's a section when I swap back to the controller It's like, oh now it's A. it just felt. What's it what's disconnect there? Why couldn't we get on the same page? Yeah, I don't know. I do love the Pro two Sitch two Pro controller back padals for this game Lifesavers man. like just having alternate ways to be able to because there's certain levels like Aquas, the one where you're like underwater That one is the worst level of the game, I think everybody agrees. but You are constantly just spamming both the chute and the bombs or torpedoes in that case. and you just get so tired. and it's so slow moving. so I'm just like, o it was like a lot having hit both buttons. putut them on the battles. and I'm, oh I'm going line, man. To the conversation of like controls. I want to review a thirty year old game and talk about mechanics because I really like the mechanics of this game. I like the boss fights. I like that the barrels are essentially parries. like it all clicks for me this time around where I'm like, oh, this is a really smartly designed thing, right?ike Every button matters. like they introduce you or they teach you in the first level, right? Oh, here's how you slow down. I'm like, okay, sure. You got to slow down points. Yeah. That's a thing that you got to keep in mind for certain elements of boss fights. You got to speed up at some points. You got to do the, you know big turnaround move. I forget what they call it, but the loooop doop thing that you do Yeah. every single button matters in a way where I'm like Damn y'all really took advantage of designing this game around a certain set of moves that you can do here. and I think it shines because of that. I don't know if it's you know, the pression quality of this YouTube video, but like the game looks so much better than it is. Oh yeah, like I playing it on my like my good OLED monor. I'm like it I'm Really blown away byer. And the production levels Mike are' just super cool. in between me about it. in between missions when you're back at the base, you're getting offer a new thing, you're getting a bit of the back and forth between the characters and then like And then, you know The camera will be on Star Fox and they'll be like, yeah or on Fox'll be like, yeah, hell yeah, that sounds good. And he'll look for it and the camera just kind of like It'll it'll kind of like slow pan into that's where now you're in the menu. And it's just They did a lot of really cool shit to make it look and feel modernized. And that's why I would just be so stoked to like, all right Let's just go balls to the wall. likeike how what would a sequel look like with all of the modern the more modern sort of ways to make a game and interactions with characters and things like that. I mean, I will say like going back to the origins of this franchise, it's always been in tandem to some extent with like pushing presentation forward, whether that's like via tech or just like trying just different things to make the game more immersive. like examples of it being using the Sper effX chip on the original game. So you're getting these three D graphics on the Super Nintendo. and I already talked about like the limited voice acting and their attempt at a more upscale score, I would say for the Super Nintendo at the time Like listening to the corornaria theme from Super Nintendo. It'sude. It's The worst thing about Starbuck sixty four is it doesn't use that theme because it is so goddamn. Hearing the sound jack here with with the newer and then You know, you hit credit and it says was recorded at Abby Rad Abyuck That's so. So So like going through that though, like continuing with the franchise, it's like getting to sixty four. I've been telling bless about this a lot. likeike this is the game that introduced Rumble packs to the world. Th are the first video console game they were playing where the controller is vibrating, right? Like it came with the Rumble pack in and just that adds to the immersion and the cinematic feel of it all. And then when we get to Star Fox Assault, which is And go on lim to say underrated game. It's not vastly underrated because there is a lot of bad stuff in it, but the good parts, the parts that really are this follow up sequel to sixty four are so damn good too the point that like, I don't know, maybe we get a stream together if you guys do end up playing through this a few more times and like get in the hard mayaybe we do a playthrough just so I can show you how cool the follow up story is That was one of the first Nintendo actually, I think it was the first Nintendo gamees to have a fully orchestrated soundtrack. And it was a lot of just the songs from sixty four, but it was reccorded at Abbey Road full on' We're doing this. And Smash Brrosers Maye had a couple orchestrated songs or whatever, but Before Mario Galaxy happened, Star Fox presentation, Nintendo was like, we need this to hit different. This is our Star Wars. It needs to feel and sound like that. It feels so epic. And I think that this is the game, the first time that on all of the fronts, they've been able to kind of like reach that I' just say, the presentation from every level is as epic and cinematic as it needs to be. When the game is out, like You guys at least gott to check out a YouTube video of like the intro. like seeing the title card hit in this game. What they do with just setting the tone cinematically? blown away by. I do I do have questions for you, Tim about The About the forty ninellars ninety nineents dollars price tag How does that How does that make you feel now that you've experienced it? I have a couple more things I want to talk about that are building into that because some of the new stuff. I was talking about the mouse controls. Another new thing they added is challenge mode. and it doesn't function the way I expected it to based on the direct, but I'm kind of really into it. I thought it was just going be more like each level as you play through your career. There are like achievements essentally associated with it. It's not. It's a separate mode where once you beat A leveling campaign, it unlocks in challenge mode And you can play through the same level, but you can just skip to it. In Sound Fox sixty four of the original and in this one When you're playing campaign, it doesn't matter how many times you beat it. Anytime you start the campaign, you start on corornaria. Like you don't get to level select. like it's you have to do a whole path. You have to do the challenge paths or whatever to get through. And just so everyone understands like there's with all the different levels, there's essentially an easy, medium and hard path that you can go through all the different levels. I some of the later levels are some of the best levels in the game. and it would be a grind to get to them because it'd be like thirty five minutes of a playthrough before you get to some of these levels. So I've played a lot of the later levels significantly fewer times than I've played Cuinaria. You know what I mean? So having this challenge mode allows you to just like jump into just those levels and each level is Five ten minutes, you know. And it's ammazing that I've been able to play some of my favorite later levels over and over and over with these new challenges. So there's two sets of challenges per level. there's normal and then there's expert. The expert ones are very difficult. The coolest thing about them Is they made Star Fox, Tony Hawks P prorokater, baby. They're just giving you five different things that are very much Tony Hawkinings of do it under this amount of time. Bak five of these things that I've never even thought of before in this level, but yep, they're there. Nots Carl to the Txic sludge one hundred percent that And it's like it's really built around, but can you do all of them at once? And I'm like, wow, you are speaking to me with this So I'm having a really good time kind of working through all of that stuff in addition to just the normal campaign stuff. And then there's the multiplayer, which Really quick before you get to the multiplayer. Can you speak to the difficulty? because now they've added difficulty settings. You kind of talked about a easy hard medium route, but now there are difficulty settings in there. we saw it during the Nintendo direct Did you mess with it at all to truly experience what it is going up in difficulty? Well, so they didn't All they added was an easy modote Normal and expert were already in the original as well. and just like the original, expert's not unlocked until you get every metedal in the game. I've never done I desperately want to unlock expert mode because I want it Expert mode adds way more enemies on the screen. way more things to do. I'm like, that sounds awesome. I'm a little let down that it's like behind such a difficult like block to be able to unlock Well on my way. I think there's sixteen levels total with variations and I have thirteen or fourteen out of the sixteen medals. The most I've ever had my life is like four. L like What are you doing tonight?all Geoeller. Sammy you know you know, we're grind. But the problem is that goes back to what I was saying about the campaign. It's like everyvery single one of the ones I don't have yet is towards the end of the game. So it's like I need to do a forty five minute play just to get there, which is tough. Thank on a side path. Now mean to what I want to hear. Yeah multiplayer So Star Fox sixty four multiplayer, like most N sixty four games was a great time. Like most games on N sixty four, it was the fun machine. You have friends over, you're playing four player split screen. It didn't matter if it was good. It was fun. And that was a perfect example of Starfox sixty four's multiplayer We played hours and hours and hours of it. It was not that good. It was not that deep, but it was there I couldn't care less about multiplayer in this Star Fox game, like going everything about it. likeike you asked me, how would you play this was like zero. I will not pick this up a single time. I do not give a shit about it. Then now that I've, you know, played the game many, many times already in the last week or two, I was like, I'll give it a shot. and I'm happy I did fine. I'm not ever going to really play it again. Okay There's more here than I expected. but three thing is three maps newew orchestrated tracks. Whoa. newew lines of dialogue. That's the biggestools up you get to fly in the wolfen on the Star Wolf team and I'm like and it looks different. Oh that's. And I'm like Theres There's some cool stuff here. It could be fun. It's just a bunch of all range mode, like flying which is my least favorite stuff of the Star Fucks games. I prefer the on rails like Just give me a fun narrative and set pieces, essentially as I'm like flying through stuff and score attacking. But I was surprised at the quality of it. It's not my favorite thing, but I don't know. I don't know I don't know who doesn't know I always be a sucker for a fun pack in multiplayer mode into one of these games and to experience it for a night with your friends. It's going to be as much as you want to put in. but like there's a capture the flag mode in this multiplayer and I do want to see that with piloting an R wing and flying around the galaxy trying to do capture the flag sounds wild to me. Yeah it's kind of like sound of that. Are we Everybody Are we still alive? We're still alive, o. Are we in a safe space right now? Very safe I don't For my whole life I've never liked the look The Star Fox As you in a great fox, a great fox I don't like it. Oh you're alone. Yeah, you're al. don't like. It looks like a goose It's just so weird, like long it looks like a bronosaurus. I' be so much cooler I don't know, man. You didn't grow up fighting on it on Smash bros. L that Yeah. Oh no that's the thing for No no, I did. Oh my go, Cornario was where we settled disputes. That was like that was like roving. especially in the N sixty four one because there was no final destination. It was like the flatest stage. Yeah, this was yeah, this was the go. It feels like it was It feels like itss original design was like, we need to make this a Smash bro stage. actually not a cool looking stage. know what? You're not wrong about that. I don't know. It's an X wayay with a beer belly is how I've always li it. Yeah I don't know. I just it's really just the snout and the nose that I'm like I don't know, I wish we could have done something a little bit. I like N of Sacurai walking. I be like, hey, grab that. Yeah, Star Fox game is cool. Can we make the ship look big? What if you could fight on it? Yeah That' so fun it. I'm too attached to it to ever That's get even near your agreement on that. I know we can all agree. Can you agree it to look cooler I don't know. Well, I don't know that it should on it I guess that's the c becausecause I don't that it should The arrwing on the other hand. Oh my god. It's the coolest fucking ship ever, man. I love this thing. It's timeless. Yeah This's not my favorite design though. I will say the assault design, I think clears this one. U I love how techy this one is and it fits with that kind of realistic look that everything has With the Nernies and Greebles. So many of them man. Um But ye I love the look of the arrwing, yeah. Did you try the face scan at all No, I don't have a camera Now, do you unlock do I have all the face scan right off the bat or do I have to unlock them as I progress through the story embargo doesn't allow me to o could save this stuff, but like, okay, you know, read between the lines on that. I'll tell you what I was really, really shocked by Mike as I was in I was in New York last week, the City of Angels And, um And I For the first time in person, Saul The B or the the What's the little webcam, but it's theana plant? The Prana plant. Yeah webcam I did not know that thing was that small Oh, it's tiny. I have two of them in my. I could any one. Anytime I saw this An image You two of them I whatn't talking quity of those cameras What's the quality of those cameras? I don't know got too f in the box. But they're tiny. They're tiny. I was Anyime I saw an image of these webcams, I thought it was like a fire a prana plant that big, like the size of like kind of like an open fist with like a little pot at the bottom. Dude, it's like this. Yeah. I was blown away by webcams. Here's thing You can plug it blessing is like that. You plug it in. it makes no difference. It's like a tiny little stylus on the top of your e. It Really shock. It's very cool. Chad is selling me it's four eighty p Crete says Mike is setting up a spy cam in Andy's room Well, it's just a little pirrada pl man And I'm plugged to sit somewhere. All right guys, but we've gone through a lot of it. I do want to dive into a couple of super chats, but before I do, I'll open up the floor. Is there anything else that you guys want to dive into? I know we started to talk almost about price there, Tim with you. Do you want to talk about that before I get into the super chat? I think that that in twenty twenty six for whatever that means, this is like as fair price as this was going to be. like do I think it could have been And should have been forty dollars. Yeah, but I feel like I'm just kind of yelling in the clouds at that like Yeah, this feels like a forty dollar game to me. L I'm still stuck in the mindset of like where game prices are at where you're in the already sixty exxactly where like forty is a budget title and yeah. so fifty dollars it does seem steep. but I also am like Again, I've played this game hundreds of times. I will continue to play it hundreds of times in the future and I'm playing this version I'll go back to the other ones for the novelty here and there, but like This this is it. This is the way you should play Star Fox sixty four. And I feel like All of the lines of dialogue and stuff that were so iconic and amazing that I'm like Oh I prefer that over this. It's like, well, if you didn't know, it wouldn't really affect you. You know. And if you do know later you're like, oh wow, that exists too, and that's cool I'll tell you one thing I love about the mask controls The right stick becomes the thruster in the brake 's freaking cool. Really It feels like you're punching. Yeah it's pretty sick Let's go to some of the suuper chats Ambrosia Jam writes in for five dollars. Thank you so much, says. What do you guys say to what do you guys say to address the criticism that this game is only one hour long I mean, that's it's just Ts like it's just like and even if it is it's really fun hour, like If you just play it once and never again, It's a great game. Yeah. You know, is it worth fifty dollars? No, but then you didn't Who didn't like explore the product? You didn't eat the whole meal. Yeahah. If you don't die in Hades, it's an hour and a half game. Yeah. L That's a game that is meant to be replayed. The game makes it clear that When you finish it, it's like you're not done. Like you didn't accomplish your goal We're going in a very cool way by the way We're gonna to take this interesting one from Cu's Pano who is going to talk about the game, but then it kind of builds into two more super chats that want to know. what do you want from a new Star Fox game? So before that, we go over to Cs who writes in and says A fifth remake of this game doesn't give me confidence that Nintendo knows what to do with the Star Fox franchise Tim, what are your thoughts on this Yeah I mean, we're building what do you guys want from the next one? I I do not disagree. My biggest disappointment from the reveal of this game was not the look of the characters. It was the fact that we are doing Star Fox sixty four again Having said that, I think the best choice they could have made Further vision of where tals and go is Make a definitive remake of Star Fox sixty four that they push as a title that matters. Drop to sixty four, it's cleaner. This is Star Fox going forward. All the other ones before That's legacy stuff. This is the Star Fox that Nintendo is building. and I really don't think that there is a better place to start than the story and gameplay and characters of Star Fox sixty four.. Bless now is familiar with Bill. Maybe. I don't know if you went down that path, but it's just like you know you know the core cast, but like if you were to play more, it's like you get the little side characters that when they make a sequel, they'll be able to expand on. And even this game gives me more answers to background for characters that I've thought about for thirty years, you know, because that's the type of guy I am. I get that. But I do think that just being realistic This is the right move, even if it's I The safest move, but Starfox needs safe right now. Starfox does not need another attempt at something that isn't going to work U Star Fox is a solid introduction. You know what I mean? Andy, when you see someone new, you want to introduce yourself, you don't come out there flying out the game like Mike, you got you gott to play it safe okay. also just a retro, right? Like in the way that retetro Studios is making them Donkey Kong games, I think having a studio that is I mean, it could be with Nintendo, but Velon not being within Nintendo, but obviously having that connection, having the talent and proving themselves with this one. It's like I'm sure if they want to, hopefully like Nintendo wants it to be so that they can be the Star Fox stududio. I think everybody wins when you show that you can make a game this good. I would love Hey You know, as much as I love the the whole mechanics of like you got your crew. I would still love to have a crew. I would love to have the crew maybe split off and maybe we need to build a or You keep the crew, but you're trying to build a team because you need for you need to have more and more. I love building a crew for a heist or whatever. Maybe the Great Fox gets destroyed at one point it gets rebuilt a look cooler. That'd be really, really cool.. But I think more than anything, I would love Those As silly as they are I want to care more about these characters. and I would love more for a moment where you did let somebody down and it wasn't just They're gone from the mission mission so you don't hear them. I like explore that stuff real deeply and have a lot of different you know, conditional moments of after a missioned character walks up to you's like What's up out there, man? Like you I needed you man. It's like, oh, shit, dude I didn't My bad sleepy. Like I don't know you were hurt that badly, but like I think that they could really find a lot of cool ways to make this universe even more expansive, you know? Tim, you talk about replayability, let's talk about like the future of Star Fox and maybe like gameplay mechanics Could this lend itself to a rogue like or rogue light mode? Of course, we talk that is the latest craz in gaming. Do Star Fox ever take that routes? I personally really hope not. That's not I think that the score attack and going for all those things like that is more on top of the cinematic presentation and linear narrative stuff that I really enjoy T Any's point of what he's saying, it's like, that sounds great. Like I would love that and like having the branching paths and choices and character stuff really add up and matter into like, oh wow, I feel like Mass effect, essentially. Starbucks sounds awesome. Having said that, Starfox Command tried to do that and to me, it just gets messy. They also didn't do that great of a job with it. But having too many permutations of like that characters, I think dilutes who those characters are Like I said, I prefer the linear on rail side of it all. So what's funny is like this game that does have the different paths. like Starfucks Assault was justust one story. Like there weren't alternate paths. It was like, you're going from this planet to this planet to this planet to this planet. and That is what I would want, just a much better version of that for a sequel to this. like put all the presentation value into going as hard as possible into a dope ass story that is we're not missing out on stuff because Like I love like little things to be able to happen and maybe like bonus levels or whatever. Yeah. I think that u One of this game, Starfox six four's biggest dy Weaknesses is It doesn't feel like there's a true canon path through the planets. It feels like storyline wise. fifty percent of the time, it feels like, well, we probably in the story in the canon. they probably did more of the planets in the run, right? But then there's some story elements where especially in this version Either do this or that. so it couldn't have been both I like it when it is there's a clean story that This is what happened. They went to all these places and And I hope that we get that. And I don't think we need to give up on on foot missions. like They didn't do it right in assault They do it right now Like I really hadith I want to get out of the plane and become like a ratchet and cllank three mascot platformer where it's like, I dont know, sixty percent I'm in the plane. and then like forty percent he's like, he's out there exploring world. He's shooting with the little I'm a I'm on a cool canteen. He's doing the cool little diamond reflect, you know what I mean? I'm on a cike I see somebody at the bar and I'm like, I'm looking for I'm looking for the best pilot out here. I need someonebody to add of my crew person turns around, he goes, Hey, my name is Kenneth. Cosmo, Kenneth. Yeah. you know what W Holy shit This is something that's only really relevant to me because the kind of person I am. But like while playing through this, I keep thinking about Jeff F Sin and how like if they if they figured how I to give Jeff Forst Gemini this stylus sped combat and' go down is one of the greatest games ever made. And it would be the second ocara time on the platform. we just fucked it up. You guys heard theseames. What are we happenving to Star Fox Adventures? Mike, I was about to bring up to you. you're in the Z hole right now. likeike did you know that Starfox Adventures, the first game cube game developed by Rre, Rre ra. U It's a Zelda a three D Zelda game just straight up. like it originally started as a game called Dinosaur Planet on that sixty four and then they just put it a Starfox skin on it and then it kind of became I mean, it's canon to Star Fox, like to the lore, like the girl crystal that gets introduced. Like she's part of Starfox now And it's pretty good. Like it's not I would put it up there with any of the Zeldas, but like it's a fun time and it kind of gives you a lot of what you're talking about really exxploring and it's less Rratchet and Clank. It is way more Zelda. but Um Then they just like tacked on a couple borrowing missions and they're not good. Yeah, I don't know, there's like three of them and Yeah, you can't even like home onto a Oo enemies presentation looks nice because I'm very excited to try this. This is going to be my I haven't played Star Fox since fifth grade when we were at after school elementary school programs where mom and dad would pick us up late at night. And I remember bringing my N sixty four to that and one of the camp counselors had Star Fox would put it in and that was my first and only experience it with it where we played through and I can remember flashes of it, but I don't remember any of this game. So for me, tomorrow, I'm very excited to be jumping in really having my first experience with this. It is going to be a lot of fun Guys, just some quick super chats to just go through. Alvaro, CN writes in and says Andy time crisis PS one has great gyro controls. and it's on the PS five. mayaybe you should go give that a try. Did you like gyro controls. I played this It's awesome. Oh. I mean, it's exactly what we'd want, right? And you know, it's a fun hour like arade I love that game man you can get if you if your local fucking arcade had the one with the guns that fucking click like Oh coolest awesome. God man. Our local Peter piper pizza only had one of them that was working though and that's what sucked. The other one you had to have You had no haic feedback. And then the action Pat writes in and says, Mass effffect but with Star Fox. I was thinking Andy was getting out down there. Banging a bunch of animals. Of course just real quick, I want to say like please. Star Fox Mass effffect, that to me is such a dream that I'm like, it's just not. My answer of what I want from the next Star Fox is another fifty dollarars Star Fox game. okay? Just like Give me that. L for to keep it t be real. Yeah. let's not try to get too crazy with this shit because in the past that has been playaying this game made me think this could work like as a new game if you release a star don't call Starfox to you, but a Star Fox sequel that is coming like this. I mean I guess you could call Starfox to you, right? But I think another Vvellin Star Fox game could work after playing this. Like it doesn't feel in the way that it does feel dated, feel dated in like the fun ways where it's, we don't get games like this anymore. notot in the oh, I hate playing this because it's an old game or whatever. Yeah. And I do think that to that point it's like I feel like a lot of the bad parts of this game are just because of how faithful it is to the original blemishes and all. So like not all the levels are equal and like there are a couple that are just a little too slow or there's just not happening too long of a stretch. Yeah. So that that's an issue. and I know a lot of people bring up that u They want to be able to do multiplayer for the single player, like sorry co op is what it's called Yeah. And the problem with that is it just doesn't work because the lines of dialogue You know what I mean? It's like each player If they werere playing a slippy and whatever you won't need help because Andy's too damn good. But also if you're just four people going the same like Yeah, it's kind of awkward. Yeah. It would make a lot more sense in the free flowing sections where you you can fly wherever you want. Of course, Christoph writes in and says Will Cosmo Kenny gets to meet Starfox and I'll let you know K keepep an eye out for the buzz. You never know never know. W. Guys, this is going to wrap up our review of Starfox our podcast for today's gamescast. I'll open it up one final time. anythingthing else that you want to get off on your mind that you want to share with the audience about this title and your experience I love Star Fox. I love Star Fox sixty four and I love this game. I truly love this game and I hope that people give it a shot. I hope people love it I do think that if you sit there and like give it one playthrough that you're going to be like, wow That's something special. Like it's Very cool. I'm hopeful that this is the start of a much more productive future for the franchise. And and you know, like looking at the review scores today, I'm like, thank God, I'm not alone on this. You know what I mean? It's like it's always a scary thing of like Be like, I know how I feel about this, but like is this thing about to like just crash and burn? And it's like, o over eighty metacritic? I'm like, cool But like you mentioned earlier, like a Starfox roobike. I believe Whisker' squadron is indie game. that's essentially a Star Fox.. And so if that's what you're inching for mayaybe go check that out, but it's been fun playing this one this time around because I've had a similar thought of like, I wonder if you brought it back as a roblike could have work. But I think there is something so special about the formula they have here where it is, oh, you do certain things in a level and that determines your path that I think is so novel and so unique to this that I really I think there's so much untapped potential with Starfox, which is funny because it is a thirty year old game Even still, I would love to see more of this. I would love to see them dive deeper We have a great day of programming coming your way if you're watching live on YouTube and on Twitch, or if you're listening later, just to give you a quick tease.
