Brandon Sherard is a longonghorn and we're talking about it comoming up on locked on Longhorns It You are Locked O Longhorns, your daily podcast on the Texas Longhorns. partart of the Lcked on Podcast Network, your team every day Welcome in. you' are locked on to the Texas Longghorns. I'm your host BK Brad Kellner. Breaking news, breaking news. Texas just landed another big time defensive back in the class of twenty twenty seven. Brandon Sherard is a Longhorn. The four star cornerback out of Shadow Creek High School in Pairand just south of Houston committed to the L long Horns moments ago over LSU and Oklahoma. a bunch of other schools offered as well and Texas is picking up right where it left off. Of course, June was ridiculous. Texas landed twelve commitments last month eleven for the class of twenty twenty seven and then of course, quarterback Neiman Lawrence for twenty twenty eight It's been an absurd recruiting one run and the Longhorns went from people asking, Hey, when is this class going to get moving to all of a sudden we're talking about a top five class nationally and we're stacking blue chip commitments left and right. And now here on july first, they keep it rolling. Brandon Serard is in the class and I think this is a really important pickup Not just because he's a four star, not just because he's a top twenty cornerback in the country, according to the composite rankings, not just because he is a top one hundred sixty national prospect, but because of what this commitment means for the defensive backroom and the way Texas is managing the board Let's be honest about something right now I do not expect Greedy James to be a part of the twenty twenty seven class. He's currently committed to the Longhorns, but LSU and others have been pushing hard. And at this point, my expectation and I know I'm not alone is that Greedy James is going to flip to LSU. That may happen today. It may happen tomorrow. It may happen sometime this week. Heck, by the time you're listening to this, it might have already happened the direction of things for a while and it feels like a matter of win, not if Texas is going to lose cornerback greedy James. So when that happens, Texas needed to be prepared. You cannot get flat footed in July when you feel like there's a chance a flip might be coming. You have to protect yourself. And that's exactly what Texas has done Of course, the longonghorns have already landed cornerback John Meredith I third. That was the monster. the five star, the number one corner in the class, one of the best players in the country. then Texas landed Montrey Jackson out of Lakeview Centennial and Garland this past Saturday, Another in state corner with legit track speed and real upside and now Texas adds Brandon Serard to the mix is how you handle a class. If Greedy James does end up at LSU, look Serard is not just some emergency replacement. He is a really good one. Big time cornerback prospect, six foot one around one hundred eighty pounds again, a top twenty corner in the class, a top twenty five player in the state of Texas and he chose the horns over LSU and Oklahoma. This is a nice recruiting win LSU was not window dressing here. The tigers were a major factor and they were considered maybe the front runner on this thing for a long stretch of this recruitment. It kind of felt like Texas was number three behind LSU and OU for a long while And I'll say this, the Tigers wanted Serard and Greedy James. It wasn't one or the other. them. So they were not easy for Texas to fend off and then Oklahoma was in it too for a while. So this was not a fake final three. Texas had to work for this and the Longhorns did. Serard took official visits to LSU to Oklahoma and then Texas Got the final OV the weekend of june nineteenth through the twenty first And once he left Austin things started to turn That final visit mattered a lot and Gerard said it himself. He said, quote, Texas definitely made a big push after my official visit. H words not mine. This was not Texas getting lucky. This was Texas making a push when they needed to. and they closed. Another quote. from Sherard after he left Austin a week and a half ago now said just being around Coach Sarark and Coach O Cf, seeing how they run things and the relationships we built made me feel like I could see myself there. and quote. That's recruiteding. Can the player see himself there? Can he see the plan? Does he trust the coaching staff Can he picture the next three or four years of his life in that program Texas answered those questions. One more quote Sherard said. they showed me how I'd fit in their defense and how they plan to develop me on and off the field. Austin felt like home and that's what really stood out to me. and quote. Bom There's your reason, right? I mean, all of those things fit in the defense development on and off the field, Austin feeling like home That's exactly the pitch that Texas needed to land. Mar Oe deserves a lot of credit here. We've talked about him a lot lately and we should. I mean, Texas is defensive back recruiting has been really strong. John Meredith Montre Jackson, junior Tupo at safety Bake Gideon deserves major flowers on that one too, but Tupo can also play some corner and now Brandon Serard. This staff had a plan for how to recruit the secondary and Mark Orfe has done a really, really good job of executing it. He's building relationships, but obviously more importantly, he is sealing the deal. W Mush champ deserves a big shout out to. He adds a bunch of credibility on the recruiting trail and Steve Sarkeesian's Texas program has become a place where elite defensive players believe that they can develop and win. Obviously love keeping the in state players in state, right? You don't want to let LSU come into the Houston area and take anybody they want. You don't want Oklahoma to cherry pick defensive backs out of Texas. You can't let the best leave without a fight. In this case, Texas not only fought they won What is Texas getting on the field? Well, a really good quarterback prospect. I mentioned it six foot one about one hundred and eighty pounds, strong frame. He's got length, he's got physical tools, the kind of body that you want on the outside and the production was strong in twenty twenty five and his junior year of high school. thirty five tackles, three interceptions, ten B use that tells you that he is around the football. It's not just projection with him. there is some bonafide production. He's making plays. is's getting his hands on the ball. He's affecting throws and he's going up against six A Texas highigh school football quarterbacks and wide receivers every Friday. The real So All good things. having a corner who can run with people, that's important. But you also want a guy who can finish plays at the catch pointint. Can he turn and locate the football. Can to get his hands in there late. Can he take the ball away. Sher has shown that he can again three INTs and ten pass breakups last year you will take that and it fits what Texas is trying to build on the back end. They want corners who can compete. They want guys who could be physical. They want guys who could play man and they want guys who can force takeaways. Sark has not been shy about that and that's been cooach Booms MO a long time, Texas stacking that in the secondary. again, John Merith the headliner, Montre Jackson gives you speed an upside. Sherard gives you another long talented in state corner with big time upside and some real production to. That is a strong The greedy James part worth revisiting here for a moment. If he does flip to LSU, some Texas fans will get annoyed and I get it. You never want to lose a commit. Greedy James an in state guy to. You don't want to lose him to someone in your own conference. but again The best programs, they don't panic. They prepare and Texas has prepared. You've got three really, really talented quarnerterbacks and obviously you still the ability to keep recruiting the position as well. That's how a top five class survives movement. Recruiting never clean People flip. Texas is going to get some flips later in the cycle. They might lose another flip or two. People change their minds. NIL money changes The goal is not to have zero turbulence that would be a nice goal to have. but that's impossible. The goal is to be able to survive The turbulence when the roads get rocky and Texas is doing just that. Sherard a big reason why. This is obviously a replacement in terms of math, but don't get it twisted. This is not a downgrade in terms of how much Texas should like the player. Sherard is really good, highly rated, has the frame, has the production, has the projection And Texas just won a head a head head to head battle against LSU and Oklahoma. This is a win worth celebrating Steve Sarquesian This coaching staff this recruiting staff. they continue to do a very impressive job of stacking important players and important positions all over the field. They still need linebackers. Heck just one linebacker would be a start, but everywhere else things are tracking very, very nicely into this cycle And man what I like most about what Sark and this staff has done recently again, that defensive backs. you need them go get them three in the last month. defeensive linemen go stack those offensive linemen Go get them. speak feeles like everything Texas is trying to accomplish. They are accomplishing right now. They are building a really, really strong class that again is ranked at the top five at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if this thing creeps up into the top three before this thing is all said and done. Sherard obviously a nice I don't know if he plays right away at Texas. you don't want to be in a position where every freshman corner has to start immediately, but he's got the tools to compete, size, the coverage profile and then you get him here with Mark Ofe and Will Mushamp. I think Brandon Chard's got a chance to be a real contributor in that secondary. That's what you are looking for. So a great picku up for Texas hereere on a Wednesday, late morning, early afternoon, a needed one to the twenty second commit for the horns in the class in twenty twenty seven again, greedy James when he flips that number will go back down to twenty one. but don't get it twisted. This is a nice ad for Texas. I hope Serard gets his love and doesn't feel like he's any sort of plan B because that is not case. Welcome to Austin Brandon are happy to have you.
