The Texas Longhorns have landed yet another commitment for the class of twenty twenty seven, and we're talking about it coming up on Locked On Long Horns . It's true . You are Locked On Long Horns, your daily podcast on the Te xas Long Horns, part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day . Welcome in. You are locked on at the Texas Long Horns. I'm your host BK Brad Kellner, breaking news, breaking news , Texas just landed another commitment in the twenty twenty seven class here on a Tuesday . Kyron Brown is a long horn. The wide receiver out of Amarillo committed to Texas moments ago over Kansas State, Northwestern, and a number of other schools from all around the country. Kyron Brown, a three star listed at six feet, one hundred eighty five pounds, ranked as the number seventy nine receiver in the class of twenty twenty seven. And I know what some of y'all are going to do immediately. You're going to hear three star. You're going to hear the ranking and you're going to say, okay, why should I care about this? This isn't Easton Royal, this isn't Manchin sales. This isn't the headline grabbing wide receiver recruit. And I get it, I get it. But I'm going to tell you right now , this is the kind of recruitment where you have to trust the evaluation . And I think Steve Sarac ian and Texas wide receivers coach Chris Jackson has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to recruiting this position. The Longhorns did not stumble into this one. This is not Texas settling. This is not Texas saying hey, we missed out on a few of our top guys, so let's just throw a bone to a random wide receiver in the state of Texas. That wasn't the case at all. Kyron Brown came to Austin ear lier this summer for a camp and he worked out in front of Stef Sarquesian and Chris Jackson and Texas offered him on the spot . That matters. That means the staff saw something live that they really liked and well there is, a lot to like the hands, the footwork, the vertical speed, the versatility for those of you who tuned in on YouTube . Got some junior year highlights from Paloduro High School in Amarillo for Kyron Brown. Now Chris Jackson went on the record talking about Brown having insane hands and crazy vertical speed . Those are two traits that I am always willing to bet on at wide receiver. If you can catch the football naturally and you can run past people . The rest becomes development. That is a great foundation right there. Other skills they can be taught over time , having hands, having speed, that is the foundation for a very, very talented wide receiver in Texas clearly believes Kyron Brown has enough there to be a part of their twenty twenty seven wide receiver class. Let's talk about this recruitment and how quickly things move to get to this point. And this is kind of what makes this recruitment interesting. Right? A few weeks ago, Texas was not viewed as the obvious landing spot at all. I mentioned Kansas State, they were heavily involved. Northwestern was in the mix. Mississippi State was supposed to get a visit. There were other programs who were lurking as well. Then Brown comes to Austin for a camp. He works out, Texas likes what it sees and Brown gets the offer and then a week and a half later he comes back on his official visit and really after that, that was last weekend, by the way, where Cyron Brown was in town on his OV after that trip, the whole recruitment changes Brown himself said the visit changed his perspective on Texas, saying it exceeded his expectations, basically going on the record saying Texas had moved up and then oh yeah, he canceled his Mississippi State visit that he had planned. So that's when you kind of knew where this thing was going. When any recruit says you know, a visit exceeds expectations and then decides to cancel the next trip, you don't need to be a recruiting expert to read the room and the tea leaves here. Texas quickly became the team to beat and today the Longhorns were able to close. That's good recruiting. Like not every recruitment has to be a two or three year saga that comes down to the very final day. Sometimes a coaching staff gets a guy on campus, they evaluate him live and in person, they offer him, then they bring him back, they show him the vision and then boom, you win, just like that. That's what happened here. And I actually like that process because if you're a Texas fan, you know, the Long Horns are recruiting at a very high level and they have been throughout the Steve Sarquesian era. The Longhorns are in big battles. They're chasing the five stars. We talked about it yesterday, Texas trying to land both the number one and number two wide receivers in the country. I mean, they're battling the best programs in America for premium players. That's great, but you also need evaluations like this, especially in the NIL era. You need some value guys who aren't going to cost you an arm and a leg. That's Kyron Brown. Texas sees him, you know, as an outside receiver first and foremost, but they talked to him about moving him around on offense, playing him in the slot, getting touches out of the backfield, being used in different ways. And that's useful, right? The more you do in Steve Sarkes ian's offense, I should say the more you can do, the more useful and the more valuable you are. This is not an offense where receivers just line up in one spot and run the same three routes every game. Steve Sarquesian wants movement and he's looking for players who can line up all over the field , get in motion, get the ball quickly, stretch the field, create conflict for the defense . Brown gives Texas a player with that kind of mold. And again, those of you tuned in on YouTube, you were kind of seeing a little bit of that right now. Kyron Brown also a willing willing blocker, easy for me to say on the outside too. That is a great benefit . Listen at six foot on the nose, one hundred eighty and five to one hundred ninety and pounds , depending on who you talk to, got enough size to hold up, reportedly ran a four hundred forty three forty at the underarm camp. And if that number is anywhere close to accurate, that should get your attention. Again, you can work with that. You can work with speed. You can work with a guy. You could threaten vertically and also be moved around an offense as well. That's why I think this fit makes a lot of sense. He doesn't have to come in here and be an immediate number one wide receiver. He's not going to be the number one wide receiver in the class. That's not the expectation. Texas already has Eastern Royal committed. They're still working on Monsian sales. They got Bryson Thrower in the class already too. We committed a couple of weeks ago the Longhorns are building a receiver room with different types of players. Sizes, body types, skill sets and Kyron Brown gives them a different look . Texas offering him after a live workout. I care about that more than I care about the ranking. Camps matter. Seeing a player up close and in person matters. How does he move? How does he catch? How does he respond to your coaching? How does he compete? How does he look like next to other athletes who you're looking at to potentially play on your team? The staff got answers to all of those questions in person and they clearly liked what they saw from Kyr aon Brown. I don't want to overhype this thing and say up, the Longhorns just landed the next Xavier worthy or anything like that, but there are a lot of really good college football players who start in the three star range. I mean, look at the history of Texas football, Cole McCoy, one of the best quarterbacks, one of the best players we've ever had, three star recruit, Deante Foreman, Connor Williams, Devange Sweet, Jayalen Ford, Gunner Helm. The list goes on and on again not, trying to compare anybody to anybody else, but the point is good players can be three stars too . And you're looking for traits that can translate to the next level. Kyron Brown has those speed, hands, versatility . And I like that he's an in state kid who has a desire to be at Texas. I mean, the way Kyron Brown spoke to a couple of different people, when he got the Texas offer, he called it a dream come true. Being from the Lone Star State, getting an offer from the flagship university in the state of Texas. That's meaningful. Like you want players who want to be there. I know it sounds simple, but in modern recruiting, that's not always the case. You want guys who see the opportunity to play at your school as special. Sounds like Brown is someone who really connected with the program. So many mercenaries just looking for cash nowadays. Kyron Brown talked about Steve Sarquesian being genuine , loving what Stark speaks for, what he stands for. And Kyron Brown also got to spend time with some of the young wide receivers on this current Texas team said he loved the environment, loved the culture, loved the city of Austin . Amarillo's a different beast than Austin. I could tell you that, but the fact that he felt comfortable here in the five hundred two, obviously a great sign. So that's part of it too. Again, it's not just NIL, it's about the people you're going to be around , where you're going to live, where you feel comfortable . Texas seemingly checked all of those boxes with Kyron Brown. So zooming out to the bigger picture , man, a lot of momentum going in Texas' favorite right now. I think after the John Meredith commitment, I said Texas, you know, felt like Steve Sarkeshin and the Longhorns were on like a twelve, nothing run in basketball. Maybe it's fourteen or sixteen to nothing now. There's a lot more good news coming this week. Remember it was a bit quieter start for Texas here in twenty twenty seven. About seven commitments in the last three weeks. Kyron Brown the seventeenth overall commitment in the twenty twenty seven cycle. This is how you build a class. Again, not every player is going to be a five star, but every good class has players that the coaching staff identifies and prioritizes and lands because the player fits and because they like the skill set . It's exactly what Kyron Brown is. And this wide receiver rooms becoming interesting. Eastern Royal Your headliner, Texas trying to keep him in the boat. Bryce and thrower, another really good in state piece. Kyron Brown too, Texas can land munch in s thisales g,rou thenp go es from interesting to ridiculous . But even if sales does end up elsewhere, this is a good , good pickup. Sark and Chris Jackson knowing what the wide receiver room is looking for, they went out and got a really, really talented player. Now the development starts, but a nice win for Texas, maybe not the loudest, maybe not the highest ranked win, but a good in state receiver
