Should be fun. Let's go. You are Lcked on Spurs, your Daily San Antonio Spurs podcast, part of the Lcked on podcast Network. Y team every day Hello and welcome back to lockedd on Spurs. My name is Matthew Tine and thank you as always for making us a part of your day on the show today. I have no idea. I guess we will find out together. but whatever does happen We're going to tie it to San Antonio somehow. actuallyctually, you know what? Maybe that's the challenge. Maybe the challenge is No no matter what happens in the next half hour, my goal is to somehow tie it to San Antonio no matter how preposterous It might be. that's the goal Um I just wanted to reflect a little bit on the fact that The last few days really like the last week. Maybe you could even say ever since the finals ended This has been one of the wackiest free free agency periods I can ever remember Teams typically sort of Take a little bit of a load offff, takeake a little bit of a break in between the end of the of the NBA finals And the flipping of the NBA calendar beginning of free agency. N this season, not this year, not this summer. People have been going nuts, teams have been going nuts like Just today. like I thought it was crazy that in the last, you know, whatever, four days or so. that we've seen Lameello Ball traded Yesterday, we saw John Morant traded Today Ci Leonard is traded got him out of to got him out of the United States back to Canada. So maybe he doesn't have to deal with whatever's coming its way. I'm kidding gettingidd J a little bit Anyway Kui Leonard is going back to the place where he won his last title in Toronto U LeBron James comes out and says continontinuing my career But it's not going to be in Los Angeles. So what does that mean Where is LeBron James going I think that's probably the biggest question on people's minds right now. And by the way, if you see me looking down, it's because I'm checking my phone ot the notifications on. Like I said, if anything pops up, I'm going to do everything I possibly can. to tie it to the spurs evenven if it has nothing to do with this ver. So that's that's the goal again The LeBron James conversation is an interesting one, especially now that and if you were listening last week, you you saw that the episode where I basically said buy into this Ci Leonard rumor. he's not coming to San Antonio. that of Spurs history is exactly that history. This was a leverage play. They got what they needed Uh, Kwise camp Clippers got what they needed. Everybody moved on h Kwi back in Toronto. Now. The Leron LeBron James story has emerged and going to sit here and say pretty similar thing. It's very unlikely He's going to be in San Antonio, but I'm not going to say it quite as definitively even though I really feel like it. just simply because there is an element of it that I do find at least a little bit interesting. Number one Very clearly this is a guy who is not going to require a max contract again. L this is in a situation where He's leaving the Lakers to go to Brooklyn because they're the only team that can offer him the kind of money that he would be typically looking for att least like what he's been looking for over the course of his career. This isn't that genuinely believe it when I see that Sam Shirania has reported that This is a happiness decision that here at the end of his career. he wants to play somewhere where he is going to enjoy all of it not have to deal with a lot of the politics and stuff like that. And for whatever you want to call the the Lakers situation the stuff between him and Luca there I don't think that they like hate each other or anything like that, but there is a real sort of power dynamic that was that changed hands, you have You have Austin Reeves upping for a whole lot of money, like Braon cooperated down the stretch last year and basically became a third option and the Lakers were better off for it. likeike without question So I do believe it when I, you know, when I see him vacationing with all his buddies, letting the the beard die go and just letting the gray beard fly. man, you can just tell. He's like, you know what I I've spent too much of my life in the spotlight. I've spent too much of my time worrying about what other people think and the money and the image and all this stuff. Let's go have fun Let's try to go out on top And my personal, what I would enjoy seeing is an expendables type of situation. Everybody joining forces in Golden State. I think that would be fun Y'all are here for the sppurs angle. You're not here for the other angles. And so I wanted to I wanted to sort of outline first of all why there's like a ninety nine percent ninety nine point nine percent chance this isn't happening. San Antonio at least historically just has not wanted The LeBron show in town And there are a lot of reasons for that particularly behind the scenes and it's a whole thing Bringing in LeBron to your program, to your franchise to your everyday life. It's a whole thing. comes with this entirely new package I think that there is some sort of sense that you could make out of it saying like, well, You know ' going through the whole silly face of the league conversation thing Um I think it' silly I'm not um I know I understand why the conversation is had. I get it LeBron is the only one around att least over the last twowo decades. that has been through that So I understand that there is that angle there that like bring him in. he can help guide Victor through the pitfalls The difficulties All of everything that comes with it Um, There is a level of experience. There is a level of Giving the ball to a guy down the stretch of games who you can trust obviously. You know where U everythingthing is going to go. B the way Don't get me wrong. It would be fun It would simply be Fun basketball to watch But again the Hiirey that comes with LeBron playing in the city that you are in And then on top of that starting to take the ball out of the hands of the guys who you're developing And you're banking on to lead the way to the next to or to the in the race for space U I think the the overall package is just something that San Antonio has never really been interested and I know that. I do know that San Antonio has never been interested in that I can say that I if someone were to argue that it's just a little bit different now, I could understand that. LeBron going out onn his own terms not not doing being too concerned or overly concerned about the entire legacy thing and like just wanting to go out on his own terms and in an enjoyable fashion in a happy way. I get it. Maybe that's a different LeBron. mayaybe that's a different LeBron camp. mayaybe all of it is a little different Um, No matter what happens with the LeBron stuff It's it's all it's fascinating to me. A guy at forty one years old forty one years old. oldest player in the NBA is still garnering this kind of attention And it's not fake It's not It's not like the media is manufacturing the LeBron stuff People are still genuinely interested in this, dude, not only because of what he's meant to the sport of basketball But the fact that he's still good Like the fact that he is still playing at a high level at forty one years old. Like I said, the oldest player in the NBA It's fascinating to me Um Like I said, I don't think he ends up in San Antonio I personally Very selfish perspective. understand that I'm not I'm not projecting here, I'm just being selfish and being admittedly selfish That that The zoo is already pretty crowded with Victor Wembinyama in town canan't imagine what it would be like. I cannot imagine What it would be like with LeBron and Victor in one market. That would be something else, man. It would be a spectacle. That's for sure. I don't think we're going to see it. All right, when we come back We'll see if there's an update. I have no idea. I haven't had a chance to look at my phone, but we will be back momentarily Today's episode is brought to you by Fanul. All right Sillo Printince. has been sitting patiently by in the on deck circle as I as I Babylon. about LeBron James. And I know that you have thoughts about LeBron. we were talking a little bit about it before the podcast started. and to let you have a chance to get that off your chest. Well I see if anything has happened and I don't think anything's happened I have been religiously refreshing Sam's Twitter page, but o nothing nothing's happened yet that I've seen. Yeah. U I mean, I don't think the LeBron Janes com the San Antonio thing is like A serious, I just feel like with Weemby in San Antonio, like every star who wants to move is going to be tied to San Antonio in some way. Yeah to a degree probably and I think a lot of that is I think a lot of that is going to be coming more from the side of like the agents and the camps and stuff like that who want to create some sort of leverage similar to what you saw with the Kawa thing, but anyway, go ahead. You're right about that. Yeah, I mean, I think the basketball could be interesting, but I agree with you. like the mediair like Victor's media circus with Bronze media circus and just like all that This team is so young Um I feel like adding even more pressure and that kind of stuff is just would not be good for these young San Antonio Spur. Well' just me And who knows about Who knows about that element of things, but I also don't think that LeBron is just going to go somewhere to be a mentor to people. And I'm not saying that like necessarily U, the Spurs are looking for that type. like they're ready to win right now. So it's not even about the mentorship thing, but like I would believe and I don't know anythingy going on with LeBronze camp, but like I would believe that It is much more likely he would like to go play with his friends Yeah then go play with like Tyler, if I were to be if if I had an option If I had If I had an option to go work at Place A or place B I'm forty sllightly younger than LeBron. by the way, I always said that once I'm older than every player in the NBA that I would be completely washed and so far There' still someone older than me. He's going stay. He's not wling plan another season. I have at least one more season until I'm totally washed. However Let me get back to the point. if I have an option to go work at place A or place B And you told me Both of these places, well, actually, let's say it like this Place A has a slightly better chance to be ultimately successful. like like Rise to the top of industry, whatever it is and place B. It's there's a good outcome maybe not quite the ceiling as place A. However Play A is swimming with genen's ears. placelace B is a bunch of millennials like myself I am telling you I know where I'm going And that is that is not is not T theh to the the workplace Swimming with gin teers. I want to go out with my people. quite overplace me quuite literally old enough to be almost all of our starter's dad I know mean. Yeah. I mean if Lebron is forty one and they just drafted an eighteen year old If I was a betting man, I'd say he's going to Golden State probably Yeah, it's probably Golden State. I mayaybe Cleveland. I don't know I would say the major percentages and I haven't I'm sure that it's up somewhere that you can bet on it as everything is in life, of course, but U I don't know if it's on Fandle our sponsors. I have not checked. I bet it but I would bet the biggest slices of that pie be Golden State in Cleveland with Miami sprinkled in there in some capacity Um, that I just think that there has been so much smoke. around golden state situation, that that one is the one that seems the most likely. Um Yeah And like I said, I think an expendables thing would be fun Yeah. he's also old guys on one team, man. Let him's. He said multiple times he wants to play with Steph Currry. He got his chance to do it in the Olympics last year Maybe he just wants to keep doing that I don'd want to play with Steph Curry. makes basketball easier. but makes basketball a lot easier and I think those two would be great together. I water this nothing is like broken yet. I thought it was just going to be a oh, here we go Osman Jang has agreed to a three year seventeen point five million deal to return to the box.urn to the box. Okay. Yes that is boring U Usman Jen was a guy in two thousand what was the Sohan draft? Was that twenty one, twenty two No. twenty two Anyway twenty twenty two, that was a guy in that draft. Oklahoma City drafted him alongside Jayen Williams. He was a very interesting prospect. didn't pan out in Oklahoma City. they waived him. He had some crazy games down the stretch for Milwaukee, but Anyway, I think he's at least an interesting player, young team That's fun I gotta tie it back to the spurs. rememember? Yeah. Remember. Do anyone remember out there? if you are online, we had this is during sort of the pandemic days when we were doing Zoom interviews with General managers And We were doing a pre draft interview, Media was doing a pre draft interview with Brian Wright It was all on video. We put it online on, you know, it was put on Twitter and stuff like that for for fans to be able to watch And at one point in the interview and tell me if someone in the comments remembers this Yeah, you probably have to be terminally online to remember something like this, but I digress put it out on Twitter or someone did. I didn't put it out on Twitter. It's one of those things the Spurs might put out on Twitter. So like I said, fans can watch at one point. During the interview Brian Wits watch is Apple his Apple watch, which is visible. starts to ring Meaning his phoneess going off. someomeone on Twitter zoomed in to see who was calling because of course Voyurism it happens online ickos. It was Usman Jen's agent And so pre draft suddenly it blew up. Uman Jg's agent is calling Brian Wright on the phone ahead of the draft. Oh my gosh. Is that who they're going to Is that who they're going to select? So Anyway, I tied that back to the Surs. Yeah. and I do think though when you're looking at someone like Uman Jenang and you're looking at the landscape of free agency right now and really ser and seriously to tie it back to San Antonio Uh, they have been This off season so far has really lined up for them because people the players, I should say, that have been both available to them in the draft and the players that make up the largest sort of subsection of archetypes that are in free agency, maybe in restricted free agency. if that's a path you even want to go down, even though that never even works anymore. Everybody just resigns their own guy these days. The vast majority of the impact players that are left out there are forwards are the position that San Antonio is going to be looking for. like there are a lot of options. Yeah. So San Antonio in terms of you would be looking for like how you'd like things to line up for you heading in, you know, after a finals loss and all this stuff And you're looking ahead to free agency and the types of players you want to bring in free agency and the draft It lined up for them really well, man. It lined up for them really well and it's been we'll see how and if they are able to capitalize here. You know, while we're waiting on some more stuff to break One way that LeBron James choosing to be a free agent might affect the Spurs is, does that mean the Lakers are more likely to sign Ruey Hatchimora, who I know a lot of SpurRs fan are interested in. first trying to go for. I mean, maybe like I think that that now that you're looking at a situation where they might be retooling, maybe there is sort of a change of heart for some of those guys, but who knows the latest free agent D Andre Jordan has agreed to return to the New Orleans Pelicans. How in the world? Okay, Deandre Jordan was a nightmare. for the Spurs about a decade ago Yeah. it was Lob city. He's not that guy anymore But he is a very funny guy. very's he's become basically like the good old vet. for you know, that who kind of sits on the end of a bench and helps mentor young guys. goodood dude. used to be a complete nightmare to play against for San Antonio his Youanas has limbing right now It's kind having a good time now. and kind of like it's kind of bismac beyondboing right now All right Right after this We are going to hit refresh again and see what happens It's smart to always have a few financial goals and a really smart one you can set, earning cashback on what you buy every day. After all, you listen to this show. See terms at discover dot com slash credit card. That's discovered dot com slash credit card Spoiler alert, notothing happened Nothing happened, but we did we got a little bit of a question here about some of the guys we picked, Terace Fed Junr. and Jaden Cutance. Yeah, go for it. How do you think these ps can develop into a nice compliment to play Exor Victor Yeah. so you know, what we all know about Victor is This is an incredibly versatile big Um Obviously, he's been playing as a starting five for a couple of years now, but remember like early on San Antonio was trying to pair him with a a little bit more of a traditional big man and they wanted to play him alongside Luke Cornet more often They just haven't had the depth to do so U, they needed to have somebody coming off the bench during those during those the non Victor minutes Yeah and Cornet played a huge role in that Now that you've added a guy like Terce Reed who can play the four or five, but he is a sort of an anchor type big defensively. He has long arms. He's a shot blocker, not a spectacular athlete by any means, but He is that kind of player. low center of gravity, which by the way, that is a big part of this What did we see with guys like Mitchell Robinson, even Rudy Got like over the course of the postseason, especially late in games, we saw Victor get pushed around and it's not some sort of slight against him and he's going to get stronger and yada, yada, yada But he is a tall dude with a high center of gravity Plers, even guys like seven to Rudy Gobert are going to be able to get leverage on him. He's going to struggle for the rest of his career Any leverage on people. Yeah Guys like Taris Reid and eventually Jade Aquaintance are going to be so helpful in that capacity because They have that sort of perfect combination of their six ten but they both have seven five wingspans. And in acquaintance' case He's just an unbelievable athlete U And so I think that there's going to be more flexibility and opportunity to play Victor at the four more often notot not make him sort of not not force him into that five man role at all times. So I think it's just going to give them a lot of rotational depth and I think both of those guys are going to be to be able to play next to him simply because of the fact that Like not only a convictor spot up and shoot He can shoot off the dribble like he can run as the ball handler in a pick and roll, which by the way Here is another element that that is reallyally good. U for the Spurs I mentioned Victor's height. I mention the lack of of or I mentioned the high center of gravity because of his dimensions pooor dude is simply not a good screener Like it he has to work so hard to plant a screen on anybody. Yeah He does that u he goes widens his elbows just have elbows way out But it's it doesn't really work that well. And like if if you're you're also in a lot of situations, especially like late in the post season when you're like trying to avoid fouls and like you don't want to elbow somebody off the line or something like that Its he's just not a good screener. We've also learned his elbows are at the theyight up a lot of people's heads would could be weapon at timeses yes. ye Taris Reid, excellent screener.. You would you would think along the way as he develops like Jayen AQuaintance is going to be an excellent screener. So I just think that Those two guys in particular are going to be able to alleviate so many different forms of pressure for Wenbenyama to just play more freely and uh, and and B the way, Luke Cornet is also really good at those things and now there's going to be less pressure on him to impact the game in those various ways along the way. justust depth at that at that in that front court area. going to be so critical man. And like the thing about Teris Reid even as we're still We're still waiting to see what's going on with Jen Aquaintance. I was at Summer sppurs practice today. They did say that that acquuaintance is going to be heading out on the road with the team It's Summer League He's not going to play But he's going to be with the team the whole time. So however you want to interpret that at this point We don't have any answers quite yet on what they're going to be looking for in terms of potential surgery or whatever kind of treatments are coming Um, but He will be on the road with them. J not playing. Tarace Reed will be playing And he is a guy who you would think. becausecause of the fact he'll be twenty three When he he was laughing today. He's like, you know, Carter Bryant was coming up to him kind of giving him some pointers on what to look for now that he's at the NBA level. and he was laughing. He's like like I'm s is't he like isn't he like twenty Teris Reed, who's about to be twenty three It was it's it's not something we've become accustomed to around the spurs here in recent years drafting the guys who are, you know older than twenty years old. What do you he should be my point is he should be a guy who on day one theoretically should be he should I'll put it like this. He should be an early contributor Teris Reed because not only is he twenty three years old Like he's coming from a blue blood too. blue blood programs really and just his his NCAA career ended with a loss in the championship game. This guy hass been around for a minute and he should be ready to go. should help things a lot in that front court. Gohead, sorry All No, I can't remember what I was going to say now so I'm sorry. Ths got. Well, we have another shams update Whats Tim Hardaway Junior has agreed to a deal with the Miami Heat man Okay that they need that. Miami need shooting in a big way. They need anything because they sent their entire team to Milwaukee in the estra But I mean in particular they need shooting to hardway just had a really good season and Also, I'm shocked how long he's been in the league I was shocked to learn how long I mean, had been in the league. There was a point there where people were calling the trade with him and Ping us to Dallas the Tim Hardaway Junior trade because that's how good he was playing in Dallas. So It's it was great it's great to see like kind of like a Julian Champannei, like great to see guys later in the draft You don't know what their career trajectory is going to look out and they carve out E lane for themselves U I think he's a great example of that. How in the world am I going tie the Tim Hardaway junior signing to the Spurs? G question My goodness They'll have more shooting if we plan in the finals.. Well, yes, there it is, you know, now now the Miamiat simply because of the signing of Tim Aardaway junior are a contender. to an even greater contender to face the San Antonio Surs in the twenty twenty seven finals. Yeah no he's Those those are the kind of signings that that do matter and Um, because Like think back to the Miamiat the Miami heat teams of the, you know, late Os and when LeBron signed in Miami They went out and found guys like this. granted, they they built them up and they find they found the right pieces like the Battiers and the Mike Millers and and so on andar Mario Chalmers, I think was already there Um this is how you got to do it. if you if you go out and spend just blow your wholeo Wad on you know, going out and getting a guy like youon to pair with Bam out of a bio. manan, it's so It's so crazy to me like that One year ago at this time you could not I don't know how much money I would have bet that San Antonio would just be a year later, meaning right now that San Antonio would just sort of be sitting in like this catbird seat and you're seeing teams around The league really go all out and make some sort of crazy swings and and take some chances to even get to even reach the levels of Burs team or and by the way Everyone looks at Oklahoma City and thinks sure. they were hurt last year. the They're going to be back and we know how good they are So just to see this kind of movement Ahead of free agency And you're the sppurs and you're just kind of sitting back And kind of watching the world burn And you're like, we'll wait and see what happens. going to have an opportunity to sign someone who is impactful because we have fifteen million dollars to spend. And basically nobody else of consequence has anything as any more than that Um, if they really want to get They really want to get crazy with it. We still have some draft capital, we could send places if if they really wanted to. I don't see that happening, but it's they're probably not going to get crazy with anything A a seconds though That's the second you can I mean they they have a lot of everything. I mean, they they have they have player assets, they have draft picks to send out, like They have And that's the whole point of everything that they've been building up over the over the years over the last five, six years or whatever is that like they wanted to line their coffers with assets to be able to to to build on the Victor Wimbanyama era. And like I should point out and because it is interesting to me D The two draft picks that were used to move up to get Teris Reid Those and this is just sort of to paint a picture of what this stuff looks like Um, during the of what this stuff looks like over the course of like a couple of seasons Those picks came a few years back during the Victor Wimbinyama draft When San Antonio traded a very early second round pick, Leonard Miller to the Minnesota Timberwolves for two later second round picks. those two later second round picks. One of them, along with a pick that they got from Sacramento simply to absorb a contract and immediately waive that player. Th picks that seemed like nothing at the time. were're just used to move up and grab Terrace R Junr. Yeah That's how it all sort of comes full circle. And by the way So far, the Dejante Murray trade has resulted in Carter Bryant and Jaden AQuaintance And they still got two more picks to convey So we'll see how all that turns out and u catching up a little because I was gone last week. Yeah.ing watchatching this draft those guys especially with kind of not a ton of floor spacing. That's always where my head's at. I was I don't know how I feel about that, and I don't have a lot of time to think deeply about it because I'm shooting mov Over the last week, I thought about it more And I think it really addressed an issue that the Spurs have because It's like an oxymoron to think like we lack size because Victor Wiminyama is eight feet taller whatever the heck we're We're say on is this week Um, And our guards are most of our guards are pretty big too, six, five, six six type guards. Yeah. But at the forward side You know, six seven is about as tall as it gets. We don't have any of those six, nine, six, ten, six, eleven guys. Um, and I'm really happy with the picks they made and I think they're going to be make a I think Terris Reid specifically is going to decent size impact on this team. by the second half of the season We did get one question from Sorry, Roger, if I u Butcher your name here. Roger Sparza eight five, three two He's asking about back court death beyond the three headed monster, not else on team for ball handling. Do you think Jay Mac comes back? I do want you not to forget that Devin Vasll is still on this team and can't handle the ball and initiate offense, but sure. Yeah, but he doesn't do that as much as he used to. They use him a lot more off the ball. No, I think. I think it's better off ball is, for sure he is. I think that They are going to I don't know I don't know what the current situation is with with McLauoughlin. We probably won't know that until sort of after their priorities are fleshed out. in free agency. We'll see who lands, but I do think that that it is important whether it's Jacobbe Gillespie or someone else U I do think it's going to be important to add to the back court because back court depth is super important. I think we saw the impact. one injury can have on this team to that back court when Der Fox It was injured in the post season. likeike it just wasn't quite the same And now that we're seeing as I mentioned and I guess it was yesterday's pod. I said I had a theory about all this stuff, but like The the The fact that now these teams in the Western conferences are in the Western conference are really loading up guards and like building up their back court. I think they saw what San Antonio did and how it allowed them play with Oklahoma City and beat their perimeter pressure, especially once Darren Fox came back again. We saw what it looked like when Darren Fox wasn't on the floor in San Antonio with really just Dylan Harper and Steph Castle were turn over all over a million times the game. So so I think we're seeing how critical guard depth is and ball handling and creation is right now in the league. likeike it's almost shifted Big wings are always going to be important. I think we've seen sort of a big man resurgence like we're getting to a point where that that creation element, that advantage creation element in the NBA is critical. And I think as teams are looking at Oklahoma City in San Antonio and understanding that they need to have a lot of ball handlers to be able to deal with the pressure that both of those back courts put on the ball U just look at the Minnesota series when Anthony Edwards was forced to get rid of the ball Very few others could do anything to stir the drink offensively for Minnesota. Tern Sannon Junior. had moments for sure.
