All right , like I said at the top, it is a mailbag episode and the readers and listeners over at the corporate knowledge newsletter Matthew Tynean. S comubstack. y'all always deliver and once again you've done so . We've got a lot to get into including talking about what's next in Victor Wimbinyama's development. A whole lot of as you can probably imagine a whole lot of fit questions how San Antonio is going to operate. What kind of players they're going to they're going to be targeting maybe like specifically who they might be targeting . But first we're just going to get into the general idea and theory behind what San Antonio is getting into this summer or for the rest of the summer, I should say . This first question is from Tybi Hearst . Tyby asks, do the Spurs make any moves at all? And if so, where do you think it would realistically register on the Richter scale? Marginal free agent signing being a one point zero and superstar moves being a ten . So I would not expect a ten . I think I've been pretty clear on that throughout the course of I guess the last few weeks when talking about what lies ahead for San Antonio , but a one point zero feels too small. Like I don't even think you can look I am, I am no seismologist. I am but a lowly podcaster, but I don't believe you can feel I'm a sports writer too, but really over the last couple of weeks it hasn't felt like that. I apologize that that's neither here nor there but I believe at one point oh you can't even feel the thing, right? I think San Antonio is going to be somewhere in the range where you can feel it, which I believe, again, not a seismologist . I believe that you can feel it right around four point zero five point zero four point zero I think is what it is . I think that's where I'd put the spirds. I do Tybee expect them to do something. I don't believe they're just going to draft these four guys , one of which has an injury question mark for this season . And I guess technically beyond, even though they feel good about Jayden Cuinton , which is kind of what you have to trust , but I don't think that they're going to just lean on a draft class and especially in this case Terrace Reed Jr. to be like the big difference maker that is acquired this summer. It would be very surprising to me if they didn't make an addition via free agency or the trade market. So I would put it at a four because I do feel like they're going to make a move that is palpable that is going to make a difference. It's not going to be a superstar , but I do believe that they are going to get help from a veteran however young or old. I don't think it's going to be super old , but a veteran player that's going to be able to help out in the areas that they need this is where you fill up the holes. It's not necessarily in the draft, although the guys that they were targeting ended up falling to them in the draft like that was just a pleasant development for the Spurs , but this is where you really do the gap filling and addressing roster needs. It's in free agency. It's on the trade trade market . And I do expect them to do something. So we all know that San Antonio largely is conservative . They're not going to make giant moves when it comes to , you know, the, like I said, the trade market or free agency. Yeah, the Dear and Fox trade was a big one, but they didn't have to give up much to get him and a big reason for that was because Diarin wanted to go to San Antonio and San Antonio only . So he had all the leverage, the Spurs had all the leverage. He wasn't going to sign an extension anywhere else at le,ast according to him . So that was a really nice deal that San Antonio was able to make. And I do think that that element of it is important as well, a player who wants to play in San Antonio. The Spurs don't have a ton the Spurs have plenty of flexibility, but they don't have some giant amount of money to go out and get like get in a free agent bidding war . But the luxury that they do have is that players are very clearly wanting to play in San Antonio. They're wanting to play with Wimbinyama. They're wanting to go chase a title . That is something that when you are in the catbird seat , you have that luxury. You have that benefit. That means like players and agents are going to come to you and say, yeah, we'll sign for the mid level exception . We don't need twenty million dollars. We're okay with fifteen . That's something I think San Antonio, I'm not going to sit here and say that they're just like banking on that happening and that if they don't get a guy for under you know a guy who will be willing to take a little bit less that their plans are going to fall apart. That's hardly the case . But it is a benefit to being where they are and being in their position right now is that players and agents and people around the league want to be part of the Victor Weimbinama experience. They want to be in San Antonio and it's not just Wemby. It's the it's the brand new practice facility that is unlike any other in the NBA. It's the fact that they're likely at least going to be building a new arena downtown in the next, you know, four to five years . It's everything that's going on with the Spurs right now. So they have that luxury and I just they are absolutely going to utilize that privilege , I guess, is a way to put it. Okay, now let's get into the more the more tangible questions, the more like the nitty gritty, who's who's going to become a San Antonio? What are they going to be looking for? This question is from Jonathan R and some of these are going to be tied together. So if I do run y'all's questions together, don't worry. I'll shout out your names, but just know that that's kind of what's going on here. This from Jonathan R. Now that they drafted for size do you. see Who them filling out the rest of the roster and free agency with? It seems like they need more reliable spacing . Who are you personally targeting? Thanks, Jonathan, and this is where it ties in. Andrew Lyons, best mid level exception candidate , John Collins, Rui Hachimura, split between Sandra Mamukellis Veili and Dean Wade . Andrew also threw in and I'm glad that he did, Tobias Harris. I want to start with Tobias Harris . If ever there was a spur who's never been a spur that I've encountered, you know, in my coverage of the NBA , it's Tobias Harris . That dude would be great in San Antonio. He even put up some pretty impressive defensive numbers with the pistons this season, which was n't always like a super he wasn't always super well known for his his defense , but especially coming off the playoff run that he just had where he was arguably okay outside of Cade . He was arguably Detroit's best player. He kept them in so many games during the postseason . And with his he's not a dead eye outside shooter, but he's more than capable. You can't he's not a guy that you can just leave open all night . He still can score . He's basically Harrison Barnes' age, but he's not he doesn't he doesn't look like he's lost as much of a step still a very good offensive player, a very smart offensive player and also just a really good locker room dude. The problem is this is the problem and where when you look at John Collins and Ruey and you look at Dean Wade , you you you see these holes that either A they had poor postseason performances, which was the case with Dean Wade for sure . Theoretically, you kind of like the idea of Dean Wade knocked down three point shooter who can defend. He did not look good in the playoffs. Maybe that was a cab's thing. Nobody looked good on that team for the most part. So I don't know, but this is kind of where you get into the interesting stuff. John Collins just doesn't defend . I know that the spurs have been linked to him over the years. He's become a good shooter, doesn't defend. I don't know. Considering San Antonio just continues to draft all these defenders, maybe they can overlook that. But I don't know what kind of deal John Collins is going to be looking for. Same with Rui Hachimura , a guy who I think fans have kind of thrown out there in the past, but I've personally never seen him linked or personally heard about anything being close with Ruy, which kind of surprises me because he always felt like one of those guys that maybe maybe he can be a spurs type if he stops with the with the no passing where , you know, prior to arriving in L. A. where he's become basically like a three ind guy , he would be a little bit of a black hole offensively kind of like I talked about with Julius R andall the other day or yesterday, whenever that was, they're all running together now, but he has changed. He has become more of a spot up guy. Of course you are when you have LeBron and Luca and Austin Reeves on your team . So I do think that R isui an interesting one . But yeah , and with Tobias Harris, I don't know if he would want to sign for the mid level. He has one more good contract left in him and he just had a really good playoff run . So that one seems like a little bit of a stretch to me . But I will say the guys that we just mentioned , those are all candidates. If you're looking at that fifteen million dollars range and you're looking at who's a vailable and what San Antonio needs, which is more spacing . And because all your front court guys are so young , having a guy that could switch between the three and the four would be super helpful. That would go a long way in sort of filling out the roster where it you can see the gaps . You wonder to an extent if the Spurs see the same gaps, if they agree with the analysis of those of us on the outside . But to me , being able to round out that the middle of that front court, the three to four, especially when you' re not sure what's going to be going on with Harrison Barnes now that he is also an unrestricted free agent. We'll get to him in a second . But I would say outside of the return of Harrison Barnes , that those would be the candidates that I would be looking at if I were a Spurs fan. Frankly, if I were the Spurs and I would start with Tobias Harris, go knocking , see what he's willing to take to come play in San Antonio . All right, we got we got questions about who they're going to be looking for about free agency all coming up next . Today's episode is brought to you by Game Time. Okay , back to your questions . And the next one, again, again from Andrew Lyons. Andrew, thank you for your submission, sir. What are the and again, I said we'd talk about Harrison Barnes, let's get into it a little bit. Chances of resigning Barnes at a discount question mark. I know he fell out of favor late in the season and in the playoffs, but with his shooting savvy and professionalism , it seems like it might be worth keeping him around if a deal could be done. You know , agree . I wonder if it's one of those things where you kind of put feelers out to see what possibilities and opportunities there are beforehand. I also don't think, you know , we've talked about it on this show before , but even considering the way Harrison Barnes fell out of the rotation over the course of the postseason the later they got into the postseason especially and also considering that he was replaced in the starting lineup a little more than midway through the season by Julian Champeni, like that is still a he dud'es an eighty two game dude . You need eight two game dudes and you need sixteen game dudes . Ideally you have both of those kinds of dudes . So you know, you don't have to have one or the other. You can have a let me do the math real quick is that a ninety eight game dude that would be ideal . But I also kind of wonder to myself if he couldn't have been in some capacity playable or a viable option during the finals. I don't know. I understand sort of why he's not out there especially when you think about things from the defensive end , but that's neither here nor there again . I digress. I do think that there is some logic into exploring at least bringing him back in some capacity if he's willing to sign for a smaller amount . Whether or not that happens, I guess, remains to be seen, whether or not he would like an opt more opportunity to play elsewhere or , you know, does he value the winning element of this. You know, he has won already . He's been a major part of both the team and frankly the San Antonio community ever since arriving here. So he has a place here. He is he likes it here. The franchise appreciates him and values him , but this is kind of one of those elements when you are gearing up for title runs, which is totally different than what they've been doing in past years . Now it's like now it's serious and now every roster spot makes a difference. Like there is something that has to be considered all the time. I do think it's a possibility Andrew, , I'm not ruling it out , but I don't know if it's going to be the priority. I do think they want to keep veterans around guys who have been here before rather than just a whole bunch of new guys like keeping some continuity in that locker room . Whether that comes in the form of Harrison Barnes maybe again, this is another question that's coming up later in the pod cast, but maybe Bismack Biombo , but you can't just keep, you can't continue to keep a whole bunch of dudes or like a whole slew of dudes around in li eu of improving your roster. So we'll see. I am just going to guess that they're going to put their feelers out there for other opportunities first . Maybe talk to Harrison on the side and see what he's amenable , but I don't think that that is going to be like if Harrison Barnes goes out and finds an opportunity that better suits him where he knows he'll be paid better where maybe he'll get more playing time . If he goes out and pursues that and gets a job more power to him. And I think the Spurs would say the same thing in that regard So we will see . This question is from Jake Amberg. Do you have any insight into how Sandro Mama Kellis Veili would fit into the current rotation system? There's been speculation about a mama reunion, but when he was last on the roster . Mitch Johnson didn't seem to fully trust him even after Wendy was ruled out for the season with the deep vein thrombosis, obviously back in February of twenty twenty five. Was that just prioritizing Sohan's development or was that something deeper that could be a concern for his return to San Antonio? Honestly, man, feel like a lot of that was simply the fact that this is a team that as we've seen now in the draft , they mean it when they say they're building their entire identity, they're building their ident ity on defense . One of the things about Mamu and he was a really effective player in Toronto. They had a really good defense around him . And I wonder if because of how good es,pecially with Victor back because of how improved they are as a defensive unit and kind of flying toward the idea like just taking off soaring into the sky toward becoming like hands down the best defense in the NBA . I do wonder if there would be a consideration there. It was they all love Mon Mamu . He was a locker room favorite , just like he was a fan favorite. He was a really good dude. He just couldn't get on the floor because his defense is not very good . But he was an impactful player in Toronto. And I think that there's something to the idea that like you put enough defenders around the guy you you're in a spot now where you don't have to play him at the backup five all this stuff can be true but the other thing though and you have to consider this. Mamu , Mamu left because he got an opportunity to get more playing time . And I don't know if he comes back to San Antonio, like I don't know if playing time's going to be there. We don't know what that's going to look like until the offseason's over , but as this team continues to build out , like you are looking at a squad that is going to be deep and playing time is going to be difficult to come by, especially as the rookies start to find their sea legs and and you know, maybe Jane Aquaintance doesn't miss hised whole rookie season and like all these little elements in there where it seems difficult to imagine him signing in San Antonio and having this like guaranteed regular role in the rotation . And to me that's the biggest hurdle in any sort of Mamu reunion because like frankly that's the reason he left town in the first place. It wasn't any bad blood. It wasn't anything like that . The dude just wanted to play . But it's still interesting . Like that's the kind of player that would help the Spurs without question. It's just a matter of, you know, like so many of these other guys is he going to get playing time ? I don't know . All right, the next question , what do we expect from Carter Bryant next year? Will he be put in a more sink or swim position where he's asked to shoulder some real responsibility or does he get another grace year where the staff looks to nurture him more than test him so this is absolutely going to be a season where oh by the way that that question is from Garrett no this is he's going to be expected to continue to develop like this is this isn't just like a he gets another type of grace period this is a guy who they plan on becoming more a part of the rotation they need his size and his defense and his rebounding and by the way man , like we even saw it in the postseason once he found, you remember in the first round against Portland where he just he didn't he looked like he didn't want to shoot the three . then And the more the playoffs went on, there were other things that were keeping him off the court. It wasn't the shooting though . When he shoots with confidence man, that thing is pretty and they're going to need all of this stuff from him. There's a reason they were really excited when they drafted him and you would expect a big leap for a guy who came in pretty raw. Like that was part of the deal when you drafted Carter Bryant is this guy had some had some room to grow on the offensive end in particular . So no, I mean, when we talk about this whole discussion about the four spot or any further front court help, like we also have to factor into the equation like a big part of their improvement next season is the expectation that Carter Bryant is going to get better . So remember , even when you sit there and think about improving the roster in terms of like going and signing a guy, trading for a guy, whatever the case might be , a big part of the expectation going forward is that Carter Bryant is going to be for all intents and purposes like the free agent acquisition . That's kind of the reality of it. And by the way, like they see what's going on behind closed doors in practices . So like everything that we see from Carter Bryant or we saw from Carter Bryant during the post season , his performances in games, all that kind of stuff. That's just what's publicly available if you want to say it that way . They know what he looks like behind the scenes. They are high on this guy. So there is for sure when you're putting all of this into a math equation , a major element in set equation is the improvement of Carter Bryant flatly it might even dictate to a certain extent like what kind of movement we do see from them in the off season. Who knows , but I do have a feeling like if it is a little bit slower than we anticipate or what you'd hoped for or whatever especially from that forward position . I think a big part of that that would be a major indication that they're like, oh no, we we got a guy . We got a guy. That's just my two cents on the matter, but yes, they are for sure considering Carter Bryant to be a major part of their future and that starts like right now . All right, final segment coming up next. We got some more ten thousand foot view questions coming up next Today's episode is brought to you by Odoo. Running a business should not feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together in the first place. One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales , and somehow, none of them talk to each other . That's where Odu comes in. You guys know this, one thing that's always stood out about the Spurs is how the whole organization has everyone pulling in the same direction with whatever decision is being made. It wasn't just Pop and Timmy or just like it right now. It's not just like Mitch and Wemby . It was a coordinated effort across the entire organization that made it successful. That's Q dot com slash locked on in B A . All righty, it is time for the final segment of the evening of the weekend friends. And I hope that this is enough. Look, there's going to be plenty more coming down the line . We will we will see how they handle free agency. We will see how they handle the trade market. It's going to be interesting. Like I said, I do expect to happen . Again , four or five magnitude on the Richter scale, right? All right , first question of the final segment from Sam . Do we keep smacky as the fifteenth man by, the way that, is the nickname that has been given to Bismack Biombo by my friends over at the corporate knowledge newsletter. Come join for more nicknames and such inside jokes, I guess if you will. Do we keep smacky as the fifteenth man or does he end up as a development coach or something? What does he want to do post career? First of all, that's a great question. Don't know what he wants to do post career as far as I know. This is a guy who still wants to play . They he is look , I think on the outside people look at some of these like you go back to the days when the Miami Heat were just paying Eudanis Haslim to sit at the end of the bench. They weren't paying him for that. Like they were paying him to be the middleman between the roster and the coaching staff, the front office, whatever you want to call it. They his job was to be a veteran for these guys. And I should say , particularly a vet for Victor Wimbinyama. How many times did you see it in the post season where Victor is needing to talk to somebody, needing to hear something from somebody? And he's over there leaning on Bismack's shoulders, listening to him . You know, he is a guy that especially for that guy , that particular guy, Victor Wimbinyama a fellow front court player is invaluable . Once they once they make that change to the coaching staff, the dynamics just change. They do. Like even if it's the same guy, you know, the same guy that you were in in the locker room with every single day , once you cross the Rubicon . Once you cross that line over to the coaching side , things just change . So would not I'm not sitting here saying like telling you that it's going to happen, but it would not surprise me if he came back I don't know at this point he's still in good shape. I think he still enjoys being in that locker room. He's not ancient even though people might think he's been around for a while but he',s not ancient yet. So it wouldn't surprise me if he came back. It's the fifteenth roster spot after all. That's a lot of room on the bench . You can generally afford to have one of those guys around and they are important . Another question from Sam, how do front offices and developmental staffs approach making judgment calls on offseason growth for the guys to predict whether internal improvements is enough to fix problems versus needing to go get free agents, make trades, whatever. Such a tight timeline going from the playoffs to free agency these days. It's a it's a tight timeline, but like they've been watching this all along , like these guys have been planning all the way the through the post season through this run . This the window has been open for a while. So it's not like the playoffs have just ended and suddenly they're like, oh my gosh, what do we do now ? We now we really have to make decisions. You know, they've been they've been talking about this stuff all season long. Like what just happened in the playoffs or the finals, like just the immediacy of it is not going to totally dictate the way they operate here . That's not how they do things. Like this is something they've been discussing and watching for a long time . So if that's if that helps out with that question at all, they've been they've been making these decisions to some extent all season long or at the very least like for months now . This isn't just like a last second surprise, no surprise , whatever type of deal. They've been closely monitoring all of this stuff for a while, which does make that decision making easier than it would be if it was just last second , but it's still, you know, it's still like we talked about with the idea of Carter Bryant, what you expect from him next year. Like those are still unknowns , but they have a lot more information on that than we do because they've seen it every day all season long . So yeah, it is a year long process. It is a season long process . All right , this question , I know okay, this question is from someone named Bruno. I know who you are, Bruno, Bruno Pasos . Will Jaden acquaintance be the Robert Parish of Robert Williams III or the Thomas Robinson of Mitchell Robinson's ? Bruno , welcome back to the show , but I don't know. All right, everyone in the comment section, will Jayden Cuenton be the Robert Parish of Robert Williams III's or the Thomas Robinson of Mitchell Robinsons ? I await your decisions . Thank you, Bruno. All right, from Martin Kroger , when will Viktor Webbinama develop a true go to move and what will it be? And what do you think it should be? If you, if you are thinking it should be something else . I don't know how many seasons it took Lamarcus to get his turnaround turnaround jumper down dirt to nail his one legged fade away or a team to develop a dream shake. Yeah , those guys didn't come in right away and do all that . I think you bring up Dirk and I don't know about the one legged fade away and all of that, but I do think that there is a similar spot . I think just considering his obviously his height , but his release point, all of these things is eventually that elbow to elbow nail , you know, elbow to nail on either side . I think that's going to be a spot. I think the midpost, the mid range is going to be his the spot where he operates for a number of reasons. One, he can straight up just shoot over you and he has the touch, all of that. We've seen that shot . He drew he has dramatically improved from the mid range . It's also a spot where he's deep enough in the inside the three point line where he's not going to have a whole bunch of . There aren't going to be a whole lot of guys who are able to load up or come over and help from the weak side when he drives. There's a lot less time for the defense to react if he's playing in the mid range . It if he is put in a crowd in the mid range , it makes his passes easier , shorter distance to any point on the floor if he's playing out of the middle of it . And like I said, that we saw it, you know, the his first game winner really like if you go all the way back to that Boston game in Boston earlier this season and then you go to the Phoenix game that actually clinched a playoff birth for San Antonio . Those were mid range shots, the one obviously the buzzer beater almost buzzer beater against Phoenix and then earlier in the season in Boston where he hit two elbow jumpers from either elbow going in both directions seal that game. I think that's just I think that's going to be his go to move to his go to spot to his go to shot, but it's going to take a little time. I'm guessing we're going to see more of it next upcoming season. It's going to take the balance, the strength, the added strength , the conditioning, all of that stuff . It all takes a little bit of time to go to come together. Like you brought up the dirks in the Lamarcuses and the Hakim's like go back and watch Dirk, go back and watch young Dirk. Like he wasn't, he wasn't even close to what he became. So there's certainly time. Wemby's only twenty two , he'll get there, but to me, that's what it's going to be. The next one is from CoAX Coax . What do you see as the biggest differences in culture between the pop Buford Aerospurs and the current Mitch Mitch Johnson Bri,an Wright Spurs, you know, I think there are a lot of similarities, but there's absolutely sort of a more youthful presence, a little bit more expressive . They're not as close to the vest . Well, well, let me put it this way. They're close to the vest , but they are the players are really able to express themselves a little bit more. And I don't want to say like that pop and Buford were like preventing them from expressing themselves. It wasn't really anything like that. It was just kind of a trickle down of who Tim Duncan was . But with these young guys , remember like going back to those days even when Duncan came in, this wasn't like a super young team. Duncan four years in college was coming to a team that was already really experienced, you know, pop pop was already pretty advan ced in age and when he started coaching like this was a very mature team kind of from the start when it when it started to really form into a contender. These guys are so much younger. Even the coaching staff, the front office like Brian Riot and Mitch Johnson are forty year olds and maybe not even forty , just like the players are all in their early twenties at least the core guys. So just a lot more youthful, a lot more except I think we saw it during the postseason. Like these guys aren't really afraid to get out on a microphone and say stuff like but but internally like they keep things close to the vest , like they view the Spurs organization it's viewed in a familial sense like it always has been. And so you feel those imprints of pop and RC with the team. Just a just a much, you know , younger version of it all right Okay , two more questions real quick. One , does Victor Wimby sign his extension this summer and if he does he give the Spurs a bit of a hometown discount like the Spurs stars of the past? I mean, I think that they're going to have the a blank check. Well, they're going to say we can pay you this much money because this is the max contract that you're allowed to sign. Fill in however much you want. We're ready to extend you . I don't like it's not going to go anywhere if they they're not in a cap situation right now that if they held off on signing Victor Wimbinyama, which they're not going to do anyway, but there isn't even a reason for them to like push it off toward the future. They're going to get the extension done. It's just a matter of like how much of a max he's going to be looking at when it's all said and done . You know as far as is he going to take a discount you see the stories of like Jayalen Bronson taking discounts and stuff like that and obviously it would help, but there is you cannot expect someone like him to take anything less than the maximum out for a number of reasons. One, he deserves it. Two , the players association is always going to hate that kind of stuff . If one of the best players in the world signs for less, it's going to put pressure on them to sign for less. But then again, Wendy doesn't seem to be here to make friends. I do think that he is a smart business man , which I don't know if that means that he's just he's gonna get the going to get paid or if that means like if he's smart from that sense he'll allow his organization some more flex ibility if he takes a little bit less than a max. I don't know. That's all up to Victor. I think you just have to assume that he's taking the max and if he does, he deserves it. And he should get every single penny of it I think that if you want to think otherwise then like just allow yourself to be surprised if he doesn't take the max . That would be a very interesting day on the internet. I will say that. All right . This is the last question and it's an interesting one. I think I'm probably
