It's time for M Geek Cab and listener Jam brings us our quick tip of the week with I have noticed that when I am in sleep focus mode, my watch face goes dark the same as if I was in theater mode and I put and put my hand over the display The challenge is, even though I have a separate Red Watch face to open in sleep mode, Apple Watch does not do that Apple Watch opens first with a bright white number display if you tap the face of the watch. My tip Instead of tapping on the face, gently scroll the crown And that will fade the time in so that it does not disturb your sleep cycles More quick tips like this, plus your questions answered today on Mac GeeCab eleven forty nine for Monday, july sixth twenty twenty six Folks, and welcome to Mac Gcaab, The show where you send in quick tips like that and we share them, you send in cool stuff found and we share it, you send in questions and we share them, hopefully providing answers and context to help tie it all together so that we can each learn att least five new things every single time we get together. Some of those things that we learn are things from our sponsors Decagon. Ai slash MGG will get you a personalized demo of their transformative customer support experience Even realalities. com, you can use promo code MGG to get ten percent off an even ring one and or even clip two when you add them to your evenG two order. These are the coolest really affordable smart glasses so worth checking out too of course and Keepersecurity. com slash MGG where you can go and get sixty percent off personal and family plans of Keeper, which is a cool password manager. So we will talk about all three of those in a little more depth shortly. For now, here on National Air Traffic Control Day in Durham New Hamhire, I'm Dave Hamilton And here in South Dakota, I'm Adam Christenson All right, Mcky Gab number eleven forty nine, you're cleared for takeoff. Pilot Pete here in New Hampshire. Good to be with you, gents And I want to just real quick up frront here, take a moment of personal privilege and say thank you, Dave for including me in your family's event last week. Your daughter got married Wonderful, wonderful time. We were so privileged to be there. I put a link to a short video in the Dcord. Actually I put the short video in the Dcord under genereneral chat. Mcky, Gab go to General and there's a video there of Dave singing to his daughter and his daughter rocking the House on the drum kit. Oh man that a lot of fun. so thank you for including me Yeah, you're welcome. Thank you for being there. It was a It was awesome. It was a great I am I am not Um I am not a big wedding person. I've never been one to prioritize that. And because so much of like They already like they al they already have a life together and it's an awesome life. We've already invited him into our lives. It's Nick's great and but it Were it not for a lot of intention AKA a wedding of it was a fairly small wedding by most standards. It was like fifty or sixty people Those fifty or sixty people were our two, you know sets of family and friends getting together. and I don't know that I would have ever had a chance to meet most of those people and to see Nick and his elements with his people. And so like There is a benefit to these these big assemblances of the people that matter. So yeah, it really it was it was a great couple of days Well, because he's from a couple miles down the road, huh Yeah the road. Yeah. either it was in Canada or Italy depending on how you slice the mustard, and they live together in Italy. so. most of the year. He's a hockey player. He's a profession hockey player in Italy. So Yeah, but a fun event, clearly a happy couple. and Both bothoth families wonderful and on display there, not I I was going to say not dysfunctional and you're not. I mean, it's amazing how you guys all support each other. It's a they didn't want to go there but yeah, no, it was amazing to see how how everybody gets along and supports each other and the love and the support that's clearly there, it was a privilege to be a part of it. So. Well it meant a lot. You know, it was as we pointed out to everybody, it was The bride and the groom who drove the guest list not And And and and so like There you go. I'll let that speak for itself. Yeah. Yeah. ye. Oh ye. I mean, I definitely wouldn't have hit. No were more honored when I found that out. Definitely wouldn't have invited you, but I had to this guy to put you on the list. rightight? And Adam, were you closer? We would have we would have had you there too, but ye, it was ye no Yep Um It was Yeah, it was good, it was a good day. And it this video that you spoke of, I'll put a link in the show notes to it. that there The entire wedding was planned, but for one moment and it's literally Skyler put together a sixty eight page binder for this Everyone loved that was involved in the planning of the wedding because there was no questions left U But the one moment that was not planned was her playing the drums which is in Pete's video The moment of me singing was her request not me trying to steal the spotlight. She wanted it shined on me, so it worked. and it was an awesome mom. It was. He sent me this video. I said, well, we should share it somewhere, sure. and he did. He put it up in our discord in the links there. You sent me that video And because I said, well, send it to me via Message and I will save it And you know, on my computer, I want the full quality version or whatever which which of course, iMessage does not do. so we had to do that a different way. But anyway, we had to find out that iMessage was going to down, which it did Uh and so Pete I messaged it to me And I went save it because I want to upload it to like a private YouTube destination or something somewhere. you know And I click the little save icon next to it. And of course saved it to my phhotos library. And that's fine. I will love having it there as my sort of long term archive of those sorts of things. but I still wanted it in my I wanted the file Sure, I guess I could have opened photos to get the file, but no Um The playler in the Discord gave us a great quick tip. It didn't work for this, mind you because of the fact that phhotos doesn't save it any or that IMessage doesn't save it anywhere. but Nonetheless is a great quick tip And that is If you want to find something you've just added to your file system and you don't know where you added it or where an app added it, Command shift F in the findinder or just click on your recents list because Command shift F brings you to your recents list And that will show you things. Now, what I noticed as soon as I got to my recents list It had two columns there. beind Last open And I wanted more. I wanted the date added, but I also wanted the size. And so I went to the view menu in the findinder and choseiew show view options. and added the columns that I wanted to my recents list and of course The file still wasn't there though way I got it to save was I opened I double no, I right clicked it it's such a chore. I right clicked it in Messages chose open that because it was a movie opened in Quicktime Player And then from there, I was able to do a command S and that let me save it to my documents fault s flder or whatever I will. I don't get it I mean, I get it. I get what I don't get is why why is there no apparently seemingly and I'm sure maybe somebody in our audience emailing feedback at MchyCab. com might be able to tell us, but I dug when this came up in the pre show, Every place I could in messages And I see no way to directly save a video directly to files or the desktop or At least not on the Mac I did notice if you go in because like my thought was, well, you got to be able to go into your message thread, you know, by opening up messages, clicking on the little person's icon at the top and then going to photos and, you know right clicking and Maybe choosing saave, no that goes right to photos Oh, well There's also a share button there maybe if I click share That'll have an option to share to files. Nope, you got air drop, mail messages, notes, add to photos, free form you other options. save directly to files is not there. There is a copy. So maybe you copy and paste into the findinder. I don't know that might work I don't know You start of printing that list Aam o. But you wouldn't print then you could print and print to a well, you can't print a video to a PDF though. so never mind. Yeah But as you know, Adam did say feedback at McGeekgab dot comot He did say feedback at Macykub d. com and while Claire sent her comment in to our discord at Macykub d. com slash discord GW did send a question in about messages to to feedback. And so I figured even though we're technically in the Quick Tips segment We can go ahead and and maybe dive into that question But yeah. first Let's do it. Yeah. GW wrote in. he said I really you have something I'm sorry. Did you have something you had there Adam before we I was to say at first, I think it's great that you still call it Iie messages. It I can't believe I stopped the flow of the show to get called out like that, but I love that I did. Boom. so cute, right? It's so cute. Thank. Yeah, you're right though. like it's in my head is I message. Me too, M too. I have to stop myself every time Yeah. So I only point evenven though it was me. com you know, there's a subject and an object and you Let's get off the English lesson, shall we and go to GW's question GW writes in, I really wish Apple would recreate some way to archive or to move i messages somewhere I have a ton of messages through the years. S are one offs that I only text once a year to folks on holidays or birthdays and I'm sure it's the same on their end Imagine if we had to keep all our mail forever without any folders or way to archive emails, but still being able to keep them text messages just scroll from present to years ago How do you guys feel about that I mean, there are some ways to archive them All right, We've talked about a few of those on the show. I think The app I ammazing is probablyro certainly the first place I would go. Uh you can I believe you asked about printing. You can go on a conversation and choose file print in the messages, not high messages menu And you will get Some amount of things, it looks like eight pages worth, whatever that translates to. Yeah I just happen to have our chat open peete because that's where this is, but that goes back to may nineteenth. So really not entirely helpful. I'm going to look at our Mac Geekab Um group you say we've known each other longer than that. Yeah, the Mac Geekub group chat goes back nine pages to june twelfth. So Really Well here's the other well, here's the other thing though, Dave is that as you scroll up in messages, they it keeps loading further and further back in time. Oh I bet you're right Yes What happens if I load back further and further in time? Okay now I've loaded your message back further and further in time. This is a this is great real time Real timeast. Real time tipping. Yeah. I'm worried not cow tipping, we're quick tipping. At what point my CPU is gonna to go sidewaysways here Oh did you need that for the show? Kind of Yeah, you're right though. No, good call because now it we're at twenty three messages. So if you scroll all the way and slurp down, I'm assuming this is because I leverage messages in the cloud U And so it's not storing everything locally. It's storing everything, you know, everything in the cloud. But which is another way to do it You don't get the control you would necessarily want over what messages you like don't store locally. It's all kind of magic. but that's one that's seeding into your paid storage. Not much, but yeah, yeah. Yeah, it is. Yeah, yeah Kii Graham also I suuggest phone view for Mac. which is from ECAM S do this. Yeah Yeah, you know, I mean, I remember phone view. I just never U There there you go. put a link to that in the show notes. I'd completely forgotten about phone view until you Well, where is phone view for Mac? I don't think phone view for Mac exists anymore There's a link to a video about it But I don't think they I don't think it's kept it's been kept up to date. I don't think it's a thing. I think the only product that ECM produces is eCAM these days. So I will put the link in the show notes for archival purposes, but I don't see phone view anymore. So I think amazing. I think Amazing is probably the best for messages Um, I think it's a good Time to remind folks about privacy. apppple. com though for other iCloud data and things like that.'s like I know you can go into different places and export things different ways, but Apple has a data and privacy page and you can go log into your account there and you can back up request a backup rather of all s of your cloud data. Now they can't do messages because messages are end to end encrypted and Apple does not have the keys for your messages. So they cannot get that data for you. But other things like your cloud mail, your documents, your photos, your calendar contacts, notes, maps Y wallet activity U all of your account activity, you can get your Apple store history, your app install. notification history, all kinds of stuff including It looks like now also pay later data and Heay on iPhone, you can Request copies of all this stuff So if you go over there and click on the get a copy of your data link It will If you Oh access All of that stuff. Oh and you get to pick you granularly get to pick what it is you're pulling down. So you don't have to get grab everything. No, no, no. you can pick and choose your application support history, repair requests and more. Yeah. So you can request that. I don't know how long it takes them to process it. I think AI was telling me It will setnd it to you in twenty five gigabyte chunks or up to twenty five gigabyte chunks if it's like your photos or something like that So Save room Save room for dessert. Well Save room for your iCloud dessert maybe. So not the fastest way to get your data, but they will send you all your data if you really want it And you don't want to do it locally something to be aware of. Yeah, yeah, yeah R? Yeah, I I don't I don't know of another way of archiving that stuff off Well, like you can go in here contact. you can you can go into your home. I mean because they're just sending you ICF files if you request your contacts, which you can do and contacts are Yeah yeah. No, I mean, I messages specifically back to G Oh yeah, no no mess Yeah, no I messages you again, because it'snd encrypted. you have to crypted on your side. Yeah. Yeah, ye Apple does not literally does not have the keys No do anything with that No, but you know, they have the data blob Like you you have the keys. clearly, we know that when the data comes down, we can decrypt it. like because you couldn't read it. Right. Yeah exactly. So like That now creates a very interesting thing and sending yeah, I don't know Isn't the key in most cases though, in your secure enclave for most devices in Macs these days? Isn't that where that's stored, the private key Like do you really have, I don't even know if you really have access to it. That's correct access. That's a good question. I'm trying to think. I know that's true for like file vault. is that? Al And I'm asking the question. this isn't rhetorical. Is that also true for your keys for messages because when you when I send you a message where it uses public key encryption as I understand it, right? And the idea behind public key encryption is Adam on his device creates a key pair, a private key that he can use to decrypt data public key that I can use to encrypt data that only his private key can decrypt. right? That's in a nutshell, and I know I've glossed over some things, and there's some things that I don't know that I've also glossed over. But in a nutshell, that's how it works. You then share your private key with me. When I'm encrypting a message, sorry, your public key with me never you've never shared your private key with me. No So I don't attend to, Dave. Yeah I don't want you to. Let's make it very clear. We're friends and all. You don't just share one public key with me When it comes to IMessage, I have a public key from each of you Every single device that thinks you might be inclined to use to try and read the message that I'm sending to you. And so if you've got, you know an iPhone and an iPad and two Macs, I just got four public keys from you. And they're in they're like in my contacts record for you and I will encrypt. And the same is true for, you know, if you have a group chat. like so there's a lot of these keys that are floating around I don't Are they stored arere the private key versions of those stored in your secure enclave or are they stored in your keychain on devices? And I don't know the answer to that That would be an interesting thing. againgain, feedback at Macika dot com that would be good to Ges good. like. We could do the research but I wasn't really. We weren't Yeah we did Yeah ye. we stumble into these things. Yeah callall a rabbit hole for a reason. Yeah Yeah H So I would think the only way to archive messages would be to two ways to be Screenshots, real, I mean, really clunky, especially going back years. Yes. you know what to to do screenshots and maybe store those and then delete the message thread. O would here's a question I amazing somehow allow you to I think I think maybe you missed the conversation we literally just had, Pete. You might have been looking at something else I might have been. I didn't hear the word I' amazing in there. were talking about links in the show notes even Yeah, that was the answer to the question. That the look at that. That was my right there. There's a link to I'm using in the show notes, folks. Yeah. I can go back and delete the last thir five seconds so we open J for any I know how it goes. No, it's easy to get distracted. It happens to me. Well, yeah, multitasking is really single tasking a lot differentack Directions Yeah But But the yeah, in addition to I'm amazing, better than screenshots is printing Uh a PDF which you can do. But again, that requires, as you pointed out, scrolling back to the beginning of retirely clunky. which is also clunky. Yeah, slightly less clunky than sccreenshots, but Yeah, you know, Well well, so I'll go ahead and throw this in here. Here's kind of one way to do it is with the app shotter S H O TT R that allows you to do scrolling screenshots. Okay You can set your keys up so that it will sccroll And it'll scroll a long time. You can set, I think twenty thousand lines is the limit. Yeah All right, there you go Okay And there's no E in shter, sir So right. yeep Yeah scrolling screenshots came out in September of twenty twenty one. that All right, sweet. Love it loveove it. Yeah All right, shall we resume quickt? Yes, let's get out of this rabbit hole. It It was good. No regrets about it, Yeah Yeah't take I do that. I could go to will runun for fun, but I will mention that maybe I'mazing would be now' sorry. So well run for fun writes in Apple and their way of hiding useful things. He says, I found today that you can reset the printing system on the Mac by opening settings printers and scanners Hold Ctrol and click in the printers list There will be a new option to reset the printing system clearing all installed drivers and printers It's true And I love that we brought that. I think That tip was most recently shared in like the the John F. Bron days on the show. So it like it's so it's been a couple of weeks.s Yeah, exactly. Yeah. yeah, we were certainly in triple digits when that at least Yeah, probablyably triple No, that's a that's a good one Thank you I'll play the naive role He why would you need to do that or why would you want to do that? That's a great question U wouldould you like I know you played the naive role asking the question, but I also know that you know the answer to it would or have an answer. Do you want do you want to answer? Do you want me to to to take it. You might need to take it, but I have the presumption when I answer. I'm assuming it's just you've gone through a lot of printers and a lot of settings and like stuff over the years and you just got a lot of cft and junk and stuff like that. and it's kind of like just like, hey, I want to get rid of everything and just install fresh drivers for the one, you know, set up the one printer that I have. and get a clean slate. That's it. Yes. Okay. MacOS uses Cups, the common unix printing system at its core And there's actually like a web page that you can go to on your Mac. I think you have to sit like go into the terminal and enable it get you We'll put a link in the show notes about how to do this But there is a webpage that your Mac can like it's at local hosts on some port You can go and see the cups like itss own display of the printing system. and you'll see all your printers there and there's more you can do with your printers than you thought you could do unless you already knew and then it's exactly what you think you can do U but Yeah, the reset printing system, it basically wipes out all of what Cups has personalized and lets you start from scratch. So exactly what you said, Yes. Exactly. Yeah ye. cool. ye. Yeah, it's good. And I'll find a link that that Eable the CUPpsS web page on your computer All right Excellent All right, I'll take a start next one from the Dave Aides. For whatever reason, Bitwardwarden has been running very slow and unresponsive on my M one MacBook Plur Pro I'm not sure if it was always like that, but it ran fine on other Macs. I tried both the Mac App Store version and their own versions. downloaded from their own version downloaded from their site. sameame poor performance. I had Claud to walk me through removing every bit, reboot downownloading same issue. and weirdly it seems data persisted. The login was still there It was also reporting as an Intel app this whole time, even though I know there was an Apple version infoane, there's an option to open using Rosetta And it was checked as default every time I reinstalled the app As soon as I unchecked it, worked Pfectly. So the tip here is check your apps Rosetta application silicon status and make sure it's opening up in the correct mode for your prin or for your sister' still on printers. Yeah ye yeah.ot printers on the brain. C on That seems obviously I believe him. Yeah it seems like that should have happened automatically somewhere along the line Oh yeah. Oh yeah ye. Well, no, I'm just my assumption would be at some point or somebody or something and just never got noticed. But I mean, that's even more reason to have this tip is like sometimes we do weird things or weird things happen and we don't realize it. we just don't know. Yeah It's a great, great troubleshooting tip. I'm trying to think if there's I think there's some some things that you can do too.'m try I wish I could remember off the top of my head I think there's a way in the system What are you call whereere you going to the Apple menu about this Mac and then the system system information. System Information, I think, has a report that will show you what apps are running in which mode. Have that in the back of my mind. Don't quote me on it But I think you can and I know that Clean My Mac has a feature, I think that's like the old Ay, I want to decouple the u Yeah the places where it's universe it was Apple called that technology where it'll run on Rosetta or it'll run on Yeah, the universal binary Universal binary that we used to call like fat binaries in theC days. You can split the binary as keubigam densions and then that'll force it to only be Ale Silicon if that's all you have. That always makes me nervous so I've never really run that utility, but I'm sure it works fine. Yeah, yeah Yeah. get rid of them all the time. I'm fearless on that. format my hard drive. goo ahead there So system information If you go to the applications section of it does include a kind column. and if you sort by that kind column, it will show you which apps are It will group them by Apple Silicon, which means they are Apple Silicon only and don't couldn't run on Intel Uh So it'll be Apple Silicon Intel. which is sort of the opposite. It has Intel only, but Rosetta lets you Rosetta too, but that's going away. So like those apps will become unrunnable on your Apple Silicon Mac soon. I don't think MacOS twenty seven kills those, but it might. we should look at that And then IOS would be the other group And then there is a universal group, which is what you were talking about, Adam, which has both. Intel and Apple Silicon and can you can use some of those apps to strip them out. But what it won't show you is a universal app that is set to run in Rosetta U I think The place I would look for that is activity monitored becausecause in there go in activity monitor, you can also I don't think the kind column is there by default. It I'm looking on, well, of course, it's there on mine because I've put it there. But if it's not there, launch activity monitor check And then if it's not there, go to the view menu, choose columns and add the kind column. And then at that point, you can sort by it And I can see that on my Mac, I still have Three Intel processes that are actively running U One is for waves plugins which are a set of audio plugins. One is for my stream deck for Twitch Studio, which I'm not even running, but evidently I am running And then the other is called Worda synthesizer X eighty six sixty four. is but I'm assuming I can Google it and figure out what the heck that is because that Probably something music related that I don't need to have running all the time. or ever, perhaps. But that would be the way to look to see what's actually running Intel versus Apple Silicon. is how I would do it in an activity monor I just assumed that everything running on my silicon backac was no longer running Intel and got rid of all the binaries. so I may have hurt myself and not realized it having not opened it. No, no no. I don't think stripping The intel code from Universal binaries is necessarily bad. I understand and generally will side with Adam's suggestion or Adam's path of do I really like I could break something by stripping it. But in general, I don't think you're going to I understand the hesitation, but but it like your Mac isn't going to run those things as Intel. It's going to run them as Apple Silicon. And quite candidly, by stripping that stuff out, you avoid exactly the problem that David Bides warned us about in this quick tip because you can't turn on Rosetta for those because the Intel code to emulate ain't there no more. 't ex. It doesn't exist. Yeah. I't think that's supp. Yeah Yeah I also liked your tip though, Dave, about the using the system information and sorting by kind. two reasons. One, you could find those universal apps that you know you might want to go check And then two Um the one I just realized is lookingoo at the intel section from your earlier tip about, hey, remember, this is Rosetta is going away at some point And I'm looking through this list here and there's some older apps that I know are not getting updates that I know that I rely on like Navocat for my SQel Rut Ran. And also I still use paperless. from Mariner software as my like paperless thing, It still runs and works, but I know it hasn't been supported or anything for a long time and I have all of my like paperless data in there in their database, they go extract that stuff out sooner than later, probably and get it into another system. But yeah That's another. tip is you might want to audit through there. I also noticed Minecraft is in there for some reason, which hopefully they're going to update that before that dies whichich I assume they would, that So You know, I'm I'm wondering and this is definitely a rabbit hole So I will I will I will mention it and bring us out of it. Yeah. but like What Wh is the opportunity for you to vibecode yourself a solution to this to have Claude create you like look, I need something for paperless. I need it to access my paperless database. I need like, you know, all the things like go How good is it like like that That's the question. right? Yeah. So I will dig us out of this rabbit hole by sharing that Rosetta two will stay in MacOS twenty seven Goldengate with full general purpose support The real cutoff is MacOS twenty Eight in the fall of twenty twenty seven So that's that's what Apple has shared. So we're The time is coming, but it's not today today But don't wait too long. That don't be my advice. Now Well now we' be here before you do it. Yeah. Eactly. like do this now and identify those abs looking and then replace them And so maybe I'll put something on our calendar, you know, six months from now to to remind us all It's coming And of course, I think it will also make a big splash in June of next year when WW DC happens and Apple announces then we will all get our similar reminder, but that That's like three months, That's too late So you All right One last quick tip just because its it's timely and germane take Yeah, this is actually from Andrew, not your main. Sorry. I ha' had to do it He writes in he's actually got a two for here. He says for a few weeks now, I've been in the market for a refurbed Mac mini And I buy my Macs from either new or refurbished from Apple so I can get Apple Care plus Mac Minis are in demand and don't last long on the Apple store. So often I check when I'm awake at five AM and then when I get to it by seven AM, it's gone. Tip number one, if you see it, Grab it Okay, and that means don't just put it in the cart for later because when you go back to your cart, it's going to be gone. It'll leave your cart if you don't check out immediately Tip number two, he says, I now sell my M two sixteen five twelve sixteen memory five hundred twelve storage for many for about four to five hundred with one year of Apple Care warranty remaining. He says, I find selling with Apple Care a big advantage and always keep the original box to add to the retail the Rale value And he says he sent us a I don't know if we got the We'll find it in the mail. It a really cool picture he' seing there. He says, I'm using the M four mini to rol my amateur radio shack and it's sitting on top of my gnd and sitting on top of that shack his grandfatherss Mse code key used in World War two. That was a really neat picture, Andrew, so. I think it's in the discord somewhere. In the mail Yeah, o, okay. o, okay good. Yeah, Gfurb. me is a great place to find Yeah, Reurb M and Reurb tracker would be the two that I would use and have been using because I've been looking for a Mac mini. I regret I have very few regrets in life One of them is that I didn't buy a Mac mini a week ago, well, two weeks ago, by the time this episode comes out I because I basically had resigned myself. I was like, I'm going to give it a weekend to see if a reefer pops up. othertherwise, I'm just going to place an order for one ahead of Apple's pricing increases. And I did neither. And new light Yeahay. that whole wedding thing that was kind of a distraction whatever and also, you know, not inexpensive U And so now my Mac Men will cost me an extra four hundred bucks. So because Apple raised their prices. But there you go. So you like we said they would. Just like we said Oh yes. No. my eyes were fully wide open Adam. I just I just, you know, I let hope prevail And And got caught It happened a lot sooner than I thought. It was like Oh yeah, this is likely coming. I figured it be three to six months down the road. No, I like I thought so I didn't think it would be three to six months, but I thought it would be, you know before the end of the summer. I didn't think it would before the beginning of the summer basically Three to six hours. Yeah. But but in thinking about it after the fact, it's like wait a minute, Apple is a very closely watched publicly traded company Of course, it was like a week. Maybe what was it a week to ten days or something between announcement and you know, surprise the prices have gone up They don't they know that the market's memory is shorter than Pete's. sorry U you know, Imazing is a great app by the way. And and So like they know that if they're going to take the risk of doing that. Of course they're going to take the hit in the same sort of memory cycle of the market. They're not going to let the market forget and then come back and hit them again. So yeah, of course I just didn't think about it So anyway, but I am in the market for an M four mini. so if anybody's got one. Let us know in the discord or whatever. I don't assume I don't think anybody's selling these right now. which' just the problem. No That' problem. They' hot Yeah. Yeah. It's just it's time. my my M one mini that is my daily driver in the office is no longer like it's It's fine I have to I realize that I'm doing a lot of T. Technical gymnastics to Make it run smoothly And you know, and some of those are being aware of what apps I'm running, running app tamer is another thing, right? like to help manage CPU usage and GPU usage and all that stuff. So It's just time It's time And that And that one will make a fun open claw machine so I can run some smaller local models and things like that. So it'll it'll be it'll be fun All right. we have more questions. I know we already got to one of them, but we have more questions to go through the next thing that we're going to do is tell you about our sponsors. All right, Pete, we got a question U Oh. Mike writes, I recently tried to download a PDF of a Lightroom book from Lightroom from a website that I subscribe to. I've downloaded previous versions of this book and would like the latest edition for the recent Lightroom upgrade However, I am stuck with a create cannot create file message and zero bytes are downloaded. I can download the file on my MacBook Pro okay can't download in my Mac studio. I've downloaded previous additions to this computer before. I'm not aware of anything being changed on the studio. But this morning I did open up the permissions on my downloads folder for everyone Still no success. I have over two terabytes of free space on this computer. So that's not the issue either Do you have any ideas and and they cannot create file message that he's seeing is in Safari's downloads List Um, it like it just shows zero K of seventy one megs downloaded cannot create a file and it's got the little retry icon there that you can just keep hitting. So he's, you know, it's right there, but it's not right there. Ciding the retry will always work, right? You sometimes. I don't know want to even put it there. I guess sometimes it might for sure.. Yeah, I've zero My good memory is that I have zero recollection of it ever really working. And I wrote I wrote back with a couple answers to Mike. The first one I said, you know, g I'm not trying to solve anyone's intelligence when I offer this, but first thing, try a reboot, try a different browser, those sorts of things and then try and get rid of some extensions. Somehow I missed the screenshots when I first saw this. And then I saw them later because when I put everything in notes notothing copied oversight to go back to the email and put it put it into notes and lo and behold, there were the screenshots And That led me to realize so I wrote him again and said that those download temp files confirm that the Safari can write to the downloads folder. It's there. It's trying to do it. So I think the block is not at the file creation level. It's happening at that transfer level, meaning Obviously from the zero of seventy one megabytes, it's not receiving any data from the server. And so I think that's more of an extension or a content blocker. So I would try a couple of different things. Maybe logging out of the site and backac in, trying a different browser along those lines and you know, get because know there's a stale session cookie or something like that then then maybe That's along it as well. So Um and and he had a dash So Safari was trying to sequence it and not overwrite the first attempt. But Those are. feel like they're almost basic and again, I'm not try to insult anyone's intelligence, but I think that's the those are the paths which I would first attempt to wander down And I know you guys would have some other ideas You want to you want to go Adam No, go ahead because I'm trying to think through this. Okay. Well, Kiwi Graham in the Discord Possibly there's a CDN handoff that's being blocked When you visit a website generally their media will come it doesn't all come from the same server. The HTML might come from one server, the media might come from another and then they might have a download server for the kind of large files that that they're going to serve And and my thought on this was a DNS block Right? We talk all the time about different ways of blocking ads and things like that and DNS blocks are part of that So if this is being redirected to something where that's an issue, then that could be what's happening and Safari is just not reporting why it can't download, right? It's just getting stuck and stopping, right? The fact that the refresh button is there tells us it's not waiting It has finished its attempt and failed That's data. That's like valuable troubleshooting data. So I think it's, you know, it's hitting a wall somewhere and it's hitting it right away I. So I like I like your idea of trying a different browser. My guess is that it wouldn't succeed necessarily, but it might and but my guess is that it might tell you more about why it's failing And that can be important too Firefox is known to use its own DNS. So Firefox might actually be A good little workaround here. But you know, also checking, are you running a VPN could be blocking this. so turn that off and try That would that would that's where That's where my head went. It is also entirely possible that they just have broken redirect in a chain somewhere on the website and trying now AKA many days later might just have the problem solved Yeah I my head went kind of the same place. I was wondering too if it could be Any of Apple's built in recent like tracker blocking sort of things. So you know within Safari checking your privacy settings and your security settings spepecifically like the hide IP address options for like Cloud private rebay or something like that, just like you said, Dave I know, I wonder especially if this is the kind of thing You know, he mentioned it was a book he purchased. So You know, you sign in and you know, you click that download button and now the CDN is seeing different IP or something than the IP that logged into the account. mayaybe they have some sort of security setup to say, hey you know, block that like right. you know, I don't know. There could be some some sort of quasi protections that you are trying to put in place to make sure people can't download content they shouldn't have access to Um, That was the only thing I could think of, something related to that Yeah, yeah Yeah, it's Um trying another trying another browser would bypass saafaris. Correct. That was what I was just about to say. But I would think in that case, like that's usually where I switch over to, you know Chrome, which is just like free for all and Anden it works. Yeah it works Track me, go ahead, Google, trrack me to death Right, rightight. Eactly. Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah Yeah, hopefully one of those fixes that I mean, obviously,, you know, it's impossible to know without without knowing U I'm trying to think, you know, could we get really nerdy and use wire shark wark would wirereshark be the right tool? What would be the right tool to really see the trace of that? Sorry, I'm backing off the mic as my brain is thinking U Yeah, I don't know. there's there's a way here. like we could get super nerdy about it, but but I think, you know, we're just looking for the fix of, you know try different things Bang on it Bull headaded persistent You good with that one? We're done with. We're good with that one. Yeah.. Mer. I will take us to David who has a question. He says, I really like Apple TV. I'm having issues getting it to sync up with sound bars. I'm getting the lip movement Basically getting the lip movement to match the sound tried the built in iPhone sync, tried the built in delay settings, frame rate adjustments and have tried about everything that Chat GPT or Google Gemini suggested Results, I gave up on my Samsung running Q Symphony bothoth using wired and WiFi as everything I read stated Apple TV does not quot play ice. the Samsung's Q Symphony. In my rec room, I recently bought a new eighty five inch LG and JBL sound system, and I would really like Apple TV to work properly as I don't particularly care for the LGOS It is closer given what I've invested in LGB detachable soundbar. It is closer, but given, rather sorry. What I invested in the LGB detachable sound bar, I wish it worked Better I've been all over the settings and just can't get to where I need to be. I would appreciate it if some timee you guys could share your experiences with TV Snc to soundbars and what has worked with you. Enjoy the show the only podcast I religiously listen to, you are the tech for the rest of us, David. Tch for the rest of us. I like that. Yeah, I mean, that didn at least from my perspective, that kind of sums up what we do. I would quickly follow that up with the sort of an official tagline that I rarely say That is you don't have to be a nerd to listen But if you listen long enough, you'll become one U and and I think that's a good thing. So yeah, this the whole thing is that Something is being delayed caausing The sound and video to not in sync with one another. I know that's what David just said, but I wanted to encapsulate this. and and there's emphasis on The something Usually It's the video. winds the processing of the video winds up delaying it and you get audio first. and video second And that's what Apple's built in thing that he was talking about the iPhone sync thing. If you go in if you have this problem and you go into your Apple TV, You can You can manually adjust the audio delay to get it to where it matches the video O you can let it use your iPhone to hear when video' coming out and it knows or when audio is coming out and it knows when video is coming out, you know like all that stuff and it can do the time alignment for you Uh and that's awesome But it can only do it in one direction. becausecause Apple's thing only is delaying The audio And so you don't get to delay the video. and that's I believe why David's not able. to solve this He's talking about using Q syymphony which is a Samsung feature that that essentially does the same thing with Samsung soundbars, but it doesn't always work the right way. So . for that reason like turning off Q Symphony probably helps turning off U But the first thing to do really is just diagnose, figure out. There are YouTube videos that you can find that will like show you on the screen the word that's being said at the time it's being said. and then of course, you can hear it. really helps to know which way the alignment is off. And once you know that, then you can start solving for it, right? So Assuming The audio is what's being delayed and the videos ahead of it U, you know, turning off some of that processing on the TV, you know, look at does it have atmos processing or virtual surround or AI sound, any of those things That might be delaying the audio from making it through in quote unquote real time you know, drop all of that stuff out and see if that helps Um on the LG, you can There's usually an AVync bypass that strips out any of the TV's delays and just lets the the signal through I say without delay, I mean, it's there's it's digital. So there's always going to be a delay. But you know, if it's You know, single digit milliseconds, it's really not noticeable you know, you start getting twenty five, thirty milliseconds or higher hundred milliseconds, very easily noticeable I So yeah bypass, turn off all of the sound processing that the TV is adding to the chain. Match your frame rate on the Apple TV, tryry it both on and off. like One of those might do it. It depends on all the other devices in the chain Uh Believe it or not, HDMI actually has auto lip sync spec or portion to its spec Soundbars don't often report their latency back up the chain So that can be part of the issue too Um Trying all of those settings would be is the place to do it There is no other way to do that. That's what I have on this. I don't know. I don't know if you guys have ever been through it. I was through it recently with my daughter when she was setting up her TV and soundbar in our apartment where they are here for the summer. I Thankfully with hers, it required an audio delay and Well,ll try this and she texted me back. She says, that was amazing. It works perfectly Thank goodness. E a blind squirrel. Well, well, I mean, I knew it was again, I knew it was delayed, but but it's hard to it's hard to discern whichich it is without like those YouTube videos. I'll see if I can find one or two. I think its somebody in the chats talking about them too, but one of us will find them. we'll put them in the show notes so that they're there and you have them for, you know, for that reference because it it's super when you can our brains are really weird on this thing. Like it should be easy to tell whether the video or the audio is first Wing somebody speak? It is not It's a really weird thing. You just you know it's wrong and your brain tries to like make sense of it and it can't It's not it's unnatural Right? Like this would not happen in nature I'm So, you know, our brains have trouble with it, but those YouTube videos really help Make a difference with how the physical connection from the Apple TV to the soundbar is Like are there options? I'm not familiar with this particular JBL? Sure. But I know in my case, like I have you know an older Sonos system and I have the optical cable connected from the Apple TV to the soundbar itself, I'm pretty sure. Yeah I'm remembering how I have it connected. So I would assume that would have less latencies and I don't know if allows for adjustments for this sort of thing, but I've never had an issue that I'm aware of with my system Sink I mean, you probably it usually the issue is when The let's presume that the Apple TV is sending out Audio and video in sync with each other, right? I mean, if it's not, then maybe that setting is set or maybe there's something else going on. presuming that thenen it's what's the stuff in between that and your eyes and ears What is it doing to it? And your system is keeping it in sync all the way through, which is what it's supposed to do That is that like it is This is a This was engineered into the whole HDMI spec, right? It's like we know that we can have this problem because we're doing all this processing. so let's do it equally And devices usually know what they what they know what they know, but they can't know what they don't know. And but I say that, I mean specifically TV Can't know what the sound bar down the chain is going to do and vice versa, and that's where things can start to get a little bit wonky, but your system is working as designed which is great I mean, just looking at the specs, it's like, it's got Bluetooth. It's got all these other things. So you're not like, I mean, you can't It wouldn't like be running on something stupid like Bluetooth, right? connection to the TV. I mean, you know, let's not make any assumptions. It could be. and that include su are sink. Right Yes, it does And but that's also sort of a known thing with the speack, right? Yeah, you know, Yeah, but it does. It sucks for snink because it's it's it's doing compression. And That usually introduces a, you know at least a hundred milliseconds of delay, often, you know, over two hundred Both. So Y Uupper H Are we good with this one We have we have more J just one quick it's kind of a rhetorical question. I wonder how many newer pieces of equipment have nice sound adjustment in there, like my projector that I have here in my ready room has the ability to go in and push the audio forward or back real nicely, you know, So without, you know, it's just right there. The settings right there and it's easy to link it sync it up. So ye. and up and it's using it's the older like Adams I have the old the original Sonos sound bar Yeah and it's connected via Tsslink Yeah And then it'sDMI obviously from the Apple TV to the to the projector. And I think your soundbar also has the ability to adjust that too in the Sonos app I think you're correct, ye. Yeah. So yeah, no, it's a known thing.ich whichich projector do you have that has that just so people know? It's the AWL AWOL twenty five hundred. It's an ultra short throw I'll just put it in the show not so people are looking they know that that one the L LTV twenty five hundred. Maybe That sounds right. Yes That's what it looks like. Yeah, great. Okay cool that in the show notots But why does it tickle me that? In his ready room, his projector gone A while There you go. Eon without ordered leave. That's where I go That's really funny That's really funny. Oh man Yes Yeah, Kiwi Gram is right. Slos could only delay the ao audio, otherwise it's predicting the future. Yes, that would be No very It's true. Yeah, yeah yeah. S sameame thing. Yeah cant can't. can't make it happen faster. Well, if it's a rerun, it should know Yeah. Yeah. there's that whole linear timeline thing people seem to be constrained by again. It's just our feeble human brains, Pete. All right. Let's let's let's see if we can squeeze one more question and Larry says I've been having constant screen dim problems on my iPad thirteen Pro all the correct settings set so that it shouldn't do this, at least I think But it still is I've already been to Apple, but of course, when I'm at Apple, it's not happening I did show them a video that I made. I verified all they verified all the settings were correct too And then when I get home does it again I like to play chess and I like to play one minute and three minute time chess, but when the screen dims, I have to take the time to get it the back lit up It was happening last night. sa I made another video. He says they sent me a replacement ended up costing me because I needed to get a new screen protector. Yeah, I got it. yeep And then the problem is still happening And at one point he says I did a Nuin pave, which of course I hate doing, but that also didn't make got any ideDSP. U Well, I'm pretty stumped, right at me if it's all the right settings, then It shouldn't be doing this.. That being said, If it's not happening at Apple and it's happening at home, it's'm still leaning in the That ambient light sensor and and he mentions the green protector Is that somehow interfering with it? Not likely, but maybe I don't know. but U Assume for a moment that the settings are all correct Is it the app? Does it happen on all the apps or is it just a chess game? If it's just the chess app then maybe the API isn't probably properly declaring itself as an active app to iPad OS when the game's being played. And I'm wondering if there's a setting within the app that discusses screen dimming and don't let the screen go dim or any of that stuff, assuming You know, it wouldn't dim in the Apple store, though. I'm thinking it's It's the light Damiel fite get Turn on your interrogation lights at home, Larry, I don't know So those are my two thoughts. It's either the app or The ambient light is just enough different Yeah, my head went where your head went, Pete with the screen protector, you know, I don't know what and a screen protector, obviously he's using, but You know, is that messing with the sensor throwing the sensor off in some way, shape or form? And it doesn't trip me up that it wouldn't happen in the Apple store because every apppple store I've ever been in is super bright and light and full of, you know, like there's not a lot of variants. And so At home, you're going to have different, you know, your environment's completely different in terms of the lighting probably So it could still be tripping it up in certain light level conditions where it's like, hey, it's you know, I'm going to kick on for some reason. turnurn the iPad a certain way and al lights hitt that sensor and it's going through the screen protector and it's diffracting in a weird way or something like that. Yeah, that's the only thing I could think of I got I got nothing to add I that yeah Yeah, otherwise dective censor, but I mean Again, it could be defective in certain lighting conditions, but how you're going to prove that to Apple? It's going to be tricky Yeah it's two different iPads. Two different iPads, is sureue too. Yeah. So again, it points back at is, you know, is that screen prredector causing some sort of issue? the only way to test that would be try the app before putting on the screen protector's probably he probably doesn't want to pay for another screen protector. know I have to remove it, put another new one back on, which stinks might have to just to prove to yourself that Thatould be the issue. Yeah, bring it to the Apple store with the screen protector on and test it there. Like you don't need a genius bar appointment to bring your iPad to the Apple store and test it bet his screen protector was on when he went to the store. I would assume that too, but you could if we haven't ruled that out, that would be the way. R to rule it out. Yeah Yeah, I'm I like the idea of turning on, you know, simulating the environment or don't even simulate. just go to the Apple Store I mean, I say just go to the Apple store. I don't know how far it is from Larry in this scenario. likeike that that it might not be a just go to the Apple store right. I respect that. But like that there is that, right? like confirming that okay, wait and um, because If someone like it's one of those things where I want to see this happen. Right becausecause Larry is describing what Larry is seeing And and I and I careful here. I don't, whatever I say it's not meant to be insulting, but sometometimes someomeone with different experience And I don't mean more or less or necessarily like objectively better, but someone with different experience might notice something Tillarry is not a flag rightight? it's like, wait, wait, wa, wait, whyy is that? Why did you do this? like you know, asking those questions? That was Gally my job when I was troubleshooting something for someone, It was like they're like, oh, sit down and do it. I'm like, no, no. you sit down and do it because sometimes it's the way you interact with it. causes whatever is going to happen and it's not going to happen because I would because I'm a different human being interact differently with the device. Um you testing it in an Apple store not Ale testing it in an Apple store is, you know, would would really help shhine a light Please forget me. on whether it's the ambient light sensor or maybe something else You know, and you've talked about it and this is this is the thing. I swear to God, you know, you stand behind Lisent or computer works, you know, I would call mechanics to the cockpit and whatever was wrong didn't And it happened to me the other day. I was down on the boat, couldn't get the chart ploted to come up and work right. All it was doing is a boot cycle and the dock master walked on booard, looked at it, and booted right up to didn't touch it, just looked at it as it came out of its cycle. booted right up into the charts. and she's going, Oh, come on It's been a half an hour doing this. you walk in and it's fixed It's a thing. We had somebody and I'm blanking on I think it was listener Ben, I want to say, but I'm blaming on what what he or whoever it was called it, But there's that, you know, the tech support proximity effect is what you're describing here. Yeah It's real It real the number of number of uncomfortable conversations I've had with my wife over this because I show up and that starts working and she's like S sort of a bad word as Pete would say. Yeah. Yeah, Lisa doesn't even Uh it like it doesn't She doesn't get mad about it anymore. She's just learned And she can call me or l It's a thing. Right. And she's like, can why of you just come stand behind me while I do this And then she'd be like, great, thanks. Like you know, it's like, okay, sounds good. whatever. happappy to help So Yeah And when I tell my wife, look, don't yell at me about it. I didn't do it. She reminds me, I'm not yelling. I'm Italian Yes. Yeah. Yep.. as someone who is married to a woman who is fifty percent Sicilian, I resemble that remark. Yeah Y Are we Yeah, ready to do some let's do have some timeuff couple. Yeah We've got time for a couple, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah. cool I'll kick us off with that mic. He says gentlemen and officer Great listening as always, for a very long Old I am, time I was listening to the discussion on minis, I'm assuming Mac mininis and displays this week and wanted to suggest that add an add on that costs upfront but saves In the long term The one I use is from BeLink, but there are others and he provides a link to the B Link website, which I'm sure we'll have on the show notes. He says it's a mini dock. It's a Mac mini storage dock. So he's recommending that. He says it lets me run two SSDs linked tightly to the mini avoiding Apple's storage surcharges. It adds a few nice ports also. when I need more storage, I just alternate those in the dock Always working hard to learn at least five new things listening to you guys when the wife is not working hard on teaching me new things to do in retirement. All the best, Mike That's awesome Yeah Yeah, yeah. Yeah. and he's right. There's tons of docs like this that are sort of I form fitted to sit underneath a Mac mini and kind of be that Always connected add on dock kind of thing. Yeah, veryery cool Vy cool. All right. We got time for one more Pete T. Yeah, we've got Greg from Orlando, Redson. Listening to Mac Geek Gab eleven forty seven's cool stuff found for I Fameix, I thought I'd let you know about Pixit. That's Papa India X ray, Echo Tango Tango Echo And it's an app that I've been using for years and displays photos stored on my Sonology DS nine hundred eighteen plus on an ancient twelve year old iPad Air two that currently supports iOS, iPad OS thirteen and later. so it should be pretty useful on many older devices such as mine When I started using Pixit, it only connected to a NAS via Webdv. It works great with Webdav, but it's so much better now with support for syynology phhotos albums. SMB slash CIFS network shares and newish beta support for Mich, that's IMMICH and on device Apple photos and iCloud shared albums I can't vouch for the beta features, but Snology Photos albums works great. It's free for up to five hundred photos and very reasonable four dollars ninety nine cents a year for unlimited photos. The app is updated regularly and those concerned about AI slop I personally started using it before AI was a thing and it continues to work well. Regards, Greg in Orlando. Thank you, Greg. Huh? That's pretty cool. I' never heard of that actually cool. Yeah. ye ammazing Love it, love it. Well, that's is that amazing Dave No. That's an app. We mentioned it though earlier in the show. we did you remember okay. I remember U Speaking of memory holes Whoa. That was fun. I had like a little cylon thing happening.. Like that. Gosh. I think I broke something When I added I rejiggered which Thunderbolt docks I was running here in the studio A couple of months ago, six, eight weeks ago And things have been a little bit not okay since. But it was also the same time that I added that new webcam, which needed some firmware updates before it got okay. So I thought that was it, but I don't know There's something not right And I don't like that for a podcast studio machine. likeike it's no Boy no No, I gott to figure it out. I will. and then I'll report about it here. David I sure it'll all get better when you swap out your Mac mini too Well, the Mac mini this is a Mac studio here in this. This is the M one M Mac studio. So this won't change Yeah. I thought you said your studio machine was a mini. No, my my daily driver down in the office is a mini. It's an M one mini. Is not wrong. Yeah yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's two And I mean, yeah, I think it's I think it's the sixteen gigs of RAM that's Probably not probablyrobably more of the issue, but Like I don't know. it's just like this has an M one max in it and This does well CPU le So so It totally reminds me of what the IT guys used to tell me is Don't touch the dust So like it like that'd have this machine that would be running for decades and it's like they go down and they see it it's all dusty and they blow the dust off and then' suddenly the whole thing. rok Oh yeah's like Oh yeah. Don't touch the dust That's yeah yet another candidate for show titles at some point. Man, that's great. Yeah. No, it's good advice. I mean, there's obviously some physics there too. when you blow the dust off, it causes the static charge to build at times and that can you know, let the magic smoke out, so to speak. So Yeah. well it's just another way of saying the classic if it ain't broke, you know, but ye that was the underlying number of times. I've had something that was working fine and then I go touch it or I mess with it in any way, thinking I'm going to make it better or improve it And I have all kinds of other problems and I just left it, it would have been fun If you yeah, exactly. Yeah, if you leave it Don't touch you nothing. LitFa. That's the other acronym that we will not explain. All right. thanks for hanging out with us everybody.
