That's the reaction a lot of people are having when they first try Kupie M. Yeah, it's the one with the red cap and the little baby on the bottle. You've probably seen it at the grocery store. And this mayo is different. Most mayonnaise uses whole eggs. Kupie only uses egg yolks, which gives it this Rich umami flavor. It' smoother, deeper, almost buttery. Once people try it, they start putting it on everything. Egg sandwiches, fries, burgers, chehefs use it, restaurants use it. peoplee who really care about flavor use it. putut it on just about anything. Then you'll understand Cubie, the original Japanese mayonnaise. Supergirl fails to take flight at the box office. Who dropped the ball on that last drop Universal tells influencers to take a hike, but how do they feel about idiot podcasters and Will there be a rata too? E all of that and so much more here on. News dub Sorry, folks, Max's got some overtime working overtime and in his place we have not sorry. Thank you for being here, but Davey, I'm sorry. The people come here for Mac. I'm sure they do. But like I just want to reiterate that like you said it's overtime. He doesn't have to do it. Oh no, when you're given overtime, it doesn't matter the time or the place you take As a municipal worker, I think they It's like something stupid, right? He probably makes like a thousand dollars an hour. So he's Davy. I am Forest dump biggest news of the week, maybe of the month, maybe of the decade The other day, I saw a trailer Season fifteen slash season two, whatever we're calling the King of the Hill reboot series. I quote tweeted it All I said was Ba I then got a response from the king himself. Andankill He said, a classic bois never misses. You've peaked. Yeah. I always worry about my friends who who peak you know, with like magnificent things like this because where do you go from here? I'm thinking right now on my gravestone, a classic Bois never misses might be what goes on there. I picture Hank Hill at your funeral withs like an umbrella, like off in the background. It'd be Hank Bill Boomhauser. But like Now underneath a tree or something where they're there, but they're not really there, you know, Sipping a nice alamo. That's right. I'm very excited by the way, season two. Once again, I don't know if it's a separate series, sequel series, whatever they're doing. That is coming out on july twentieth. I'm going to binge all eight to ten episodes. However many episodes there are immediately. I loved that first season. This is one of those things that falls under that category of like I first of all, I didn't know this existed until we you just started talking about it right now And two that there's a season two. Is it good or is it like arest of development? Did it pick up right where you left off? I would argue it is and we'll talk about X men ninety seven in a little bit. This might be the second best. It's on that second tier of reboot, requel, whatever you want to call series. They've aged up the characters They brought him into modern day. The first episodes little tougher to get through, but once they get back into that King of the hill storytelling. It's They didn't miss any steps. What have we done with the Brittney Murphy character? She is not in it. Carly. she's not in it but is not in it. Lan, right? John Redcorn got a sendoff episode. H voice actor passed away as well Obviously Brittney Murphy's Luanne's husband he also passed away was Tom Petty. but you know, when you're dealing with the show that's been around for almost twenty years now That's going to happen. It's crazy that the Simpsons have only had like one or two. right. thirty almost forty years now. I've seen Harry Sheer recently. He does not look great. No. And we've talked about this on the podcast as well is that when that second Simpsons movie drops, if people go and see that And they haven't heard the show in twenty years since the last Simpsons movie They're going to be in guafar when they hear Marge talk. Yeah it's I thought it was with Rick and Morty like it was with Justin Roylan being gone like Morty's voice was a little off. Now I feel like This is even more shocking, more jarring. N' d. Over at the box office this past weekend Toy Story took it home again seventy million domestic Now it is at almost six hundred million worldwide It will be the top grossing movie of the year. Pat on the back to Goo for getting that in the movie draft money and reception wise. It's the worst of the franchise. yet. It's got like a ninety five percent. Davey Is it the best franchise of all time? It probably like if you're thinking just in those terms of like both box office and critic score critical probably and audience and consistency. Probably. You know it is having a tough time calling itself the best franchise of all time and that is the DC stududios Supergirl opened at thirty seven million over the weekend. one hundred seventy million dollars production budget. The domestic open was lower than the Fash, Morbius and the Marvels a source familiar with the financials say that the movie possible losses eighty to eighty five million dollars, but Peter Saffron, I believe, Zack Saffrin. It's not Zack Saffrin. Whoever works with James Gunnet It's the Sffron feellllow from Warner Brrosers while Supergirl didn't meet our box office expectations. It's just one component of a broader long term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in. I'm hoping that's the case I'm hoping they don't just say Uh oh. this is bad. We need to change course now because I like What Gun is doing and I want to see that they can keep on doing this I didn't hate this movie I thought it was good to decent world building. as a movie, you could argue, take more swings Try and be more original I want to see what they do moving forward. I could see them saying to James Gunn Pick more characters that people know and like. May I talk of the other side of that coin. Yes. James Gunn thrives like characters with Guardians of the galaxy. that are a little bit more offbeat, a little bit like he thrives with weirdos. Right? And I feel like He does that And I feel like people can't direct I know, I know he didn't direct it and he wrote some of it but like and he was executive producing or like whatever, but like They can't do what he does. Similarly, like when you know when Dave Falonei does something with Star Wars, like he did it And there aren't people who can do what he does. So like him kind of like delegating this to lesser people is really what's hurting. So you want him to do every one of these movies? No, know, I don't want them to do all of these movies. I want him to do like the important ones, but also I want Like the Rusos did the important Avengers movies, right And that worked becausecause there was like you said, this is broader picture, But to come out and say like Well, this is fine because we weren't really trying with this one It' such like a loser thing to say. Well, it's a loser company. You're right. But like say donon't say that be like, well, yeah I mean like, yeah this one stunk, but like whatever, we didn't even care about this one because it's not really important. But also I would like them to be more about like, look, the box office isn't exactly what we wanted, but We by the end of the movie, we have moved our timeline along to where we want to be. somethingomething like that where the movie did what we wanted it to do. Uh in a theatrical standpoint. R? Like you think of like Ant Man in the wall or quuantumania, right? att least it was doing something even if the movie wasn't that good at least it was the moving something along. Right. Even if it I mean, now it's nothing because those characters are don't't The cops say they don't matter. They they're great. They like they don't matter. I think what they should do. and this is what Gun had talked about when he did his big timeline was that he wanted the creative types to really take a hold of their movies and make it their own So maybe you get less notes from James Gunn. so that you don't make every movie to James Gunn Yeah, I think maybe that's it too, but maybe like there has to be some consistency, right? There has to be some things I know, and we'll get we'll just talk about it now, but Craig Gillespie, the director of the movie, he credits, which is pointing fingers, I guess at James Gunn with helping choosing the final needle drop for Supergirl And I'll just say this is that when I I didn't even pick up on the song in the movie, which was a slowed down cover of Jimmy Eats Worlds, Jimmy Eat Worlds The middle performed by Kilty Greay and Kid Model The reason why I didn't pick up on it was I was just excited to finally see Supergirl beating the shit out of people that I kind of just missed the music drop. You were too focused on the ass kickory rather than the Yeah. And also I'm so used to the James Gunn style drop that I think that might just be lost on me too. Full disclosure, I haven't seen Super Gro yet. I mean I've been read all the things, but like, Why wouldn't you just use the real song? Was it like some sort of like melodramatic? Once again, it was melodramatic, but once again, I was just so focused on the fact that they were finally going to let Supergirl Start ragdolling people The song almost didn't even register with me whichich that might be that might be worse. I don't know. I'm also like confused because there are ways to do like slower songs with like faster pacace action and whatever, But like why If you're going to use cover of like a really well known song that's like a different version of it. whyy wouldn't you just use a different song? That doesn't make sense to me. I went through forty five songs, Dave. That's like my dream job too. What is that? what is that pos? It's like a music supervisor or somethings like Yeah. Oh God, what a job that is. Also at the box office this past weekend and it's final. So it'll still be at the theaters, but now it is currently, as we speak, available video on demand. Obsession made just under ten million dollars. It is now over three hundred seventy million worldwide. It just went ahead of sinners correct. Yes in the horror genre Awesome. Did you now I didn't get your score. What did What did you think of obsession? thirirty eight? Oh my Godd Love it R right on the money. It's such a great movie where It's so simple and I mean that in the most polite way possible because some people say that things are too simple sometimes, but I think simplicity to do that well is extremely difficult Reaching a broad audience with a well crafted story, you need to be a little simple sometimes. And a cast of no buddies, right? Yeahep. And I think this is, I mean If the James Guns and the DC's of the world or Marvels of the world are taken like peoplee are looking for originality now. They're not looking for the same shit. Well, I mean, you've seen the story that now movie studios are scouring Reddit looking for short stories to try and scrape those off of their. Yeah, I read that and it was also like it gave me flashes like the Water Boy. Remember like that they showed like that package of like, oh, Michigan's trying out their towel boy. It just gets absolutely destroyed. That's good Yeah, like that's that's kind of the vibes movie studios you're doing. And then in its first weekend at the box office Jack S last and best only eight and a half million dollars, the worst of the franchise Critically did pretty well, I think, like an eighty five percent I still have not seen this yet, but it warmed my heart to see Phil and Aate Margera. on the red carpet Phil, of course, wearing a Bam t shirt Fucking rid or die dad. Let me ask you this. haveave you ever seen like When's the last time? Like remember watching like Rick Flair Wrestle? Oh, when they're older? Like when does it just get sad No like does. like you're like concerned. Last year, the Milwaukee Brewers did a likeike a franchise haall of Fame Home runun Derby where they had Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, all those guys And then people took that and they said, well, why don't the Red Sox try and do this and while I would watch I'm not sure how excited I'd be to see fifty year old Manny Ramirez going out there and doing this. I bet you Movon can still hit tanks. I don't know. Movon had to retire because he could barely walk by the end Well he did he's looking dirdies. He's not looking to walk He' just standing in there just He's looking to take four pitches and get referenceongs. Yeah I mean, yeah, you know, Manny ortiz Moe. and once again, I'd watch it Be I don't know how many times you want to watch the old timers get out there. No. And like I said, I've seen some like heavweight boxing matches where you're just like, this is got to stop Like this is bad. I did like, it might have been the onion, might have been a different parody publication They had a, you know, scene from Jackass five and it was just Johnny Knoxville walking up the stairs Yeah I watched an interview with him and he was crying He started crying because they were talking about how he can't do stuff with bulls because he has seventeen concussions. Yeah And what do you hear his story about when he was doing was it action Park or was that with his ee popped out? Yeah likeike dude, what are you doing? I've watch so many of the interviews and I might prefer the interviews overseing Jackass five because it's them talking about the old stunts and they're willing to get deeper into those. And like listening to Danger Aon Talk about what he had to go through just to get respect from those guys. Oh just like he lived in constant fear for a decade J being on that set was nuts. But I also love the story with the big hand, the high file. Oh, the hand is the best. when they're like And it's so funny because they were talking about it how like you watch the progression. And it worked the whole time, but then they're like, no, no, and they kept adding garage springs to it. So by the time it hit Bam, it took him off his feet, he fell for the soup This july fourth comes celebrate at America's Block Party, hosted by America two hundred fifty. Cuteie the original Japanese mayonnaise. And Supergirl is it's gonna get crushed because this next weekend, we have minions and monsters Then we have and while this isn't going to do well, it should do okay in its opening weekend. Moana live action. Then we have the Odysy. Yeah So it does not have a shot at these following weeks because it's going to get beaten by Toy Story five again. It's going to get beaten mininions and monsters. So I saw this last night. It's opening on Wednesday for the holiday weekend While I have so much love and admiration for the minions, they are modern day looney tunes I'm so confused how they keep on stitching movies together. because While I love They' like three to four minute bits of like getting a nice laugh. The kids get a real big pop out of it Then you have like ten minutes of trying to stitch a story together that att least for me and maybe I'm Like if I'm finding it boring, I don't know how a kid wouldn't find it boring But stitching together the comedy bits. I feel like there's something missing in all of their movies. Yes, I've seen every one of their movies. I have seenver and I put my life on the line for these minion things because of that person right there. That person's second birthday party. It's my daughter Qun. Yeah. wantanted a minion themed birthday party and it was likeike one hundred, she's born in August, so her birthday' parties is like the middle of August. It was like one hundred and five degrees that day and I'm running around in a minion cost him. I'm also concerned for the franchise in general because this movie was it was about minions making a minions movie. and we getting too far up our own ass at that point. But as long as they're farting and falling down and hitting each other with stuff, that's all the kids need. The biggest pop in the movie and to big anything away. Baby Jack ass. The biggest pop in the movie was at one point One of the minions took Grew's clothes away Nud ofity cells. fucking kids think it's the funniest thing ever. They see a button in a movie? Yeah it's funny. They lose it. what What' so long A Greu Gruws knows or is They didn't show Schmns, but that's fine. So Credits of the minions, they're gonna make Probably one I'll say one thirty over the weekend without looking actually I' the five day, it's going to get close to two hundred million. Billion By the it'll make over a billion. they all do New's db You know what else is opening up on Wednesday, baby? D n n Three episodes of X Men ninety seven Days of Future Past, a Force to be reckoned with and rise of Apocalypse All on one day. We are picking up right after season one of X men ninety seven. We also got a clip featatering Thor. That's awesome. This is I think the perfect Bringing the old characters to now, aging up the characters with the audience And saying we used to give you these three, four part episodes hoping that you'd be able to follow. We now know that you can and we'll do season long shit. And I like that like they're kind of leaving the rise of apocalypse. It's like part one, right? So they're leaving you with kind of a cliffhanger of like they're, you know bait you a little bit to get hook you. I'm excited for that. And then also opening on Wednesday, I think all eight episodes of the legally blond legally blonde prequel series. Oh, great. You'll be checking that out. I'll be checking that out She moves to Seattle. These are both nineties based shows How does wait I'm here to answer all questions. go ahead. Ell Woods is moving to Seattle. So Ell Woods, what it does is it brings you back to her in high school. Right. So she lives in famous southern Her mother Jun De Rafael says we are going to move to Seattle. They move to Seattle and she tries to fit in with all those grungy little pricks And while she's learning a lesson, She's going to teach them a lesson. But I was under the impression that she went to a very southern college. I thought she went to Florida or something Or maybe somewhere in Los Angeles. I don't know. I All I know about the first one is that it's one of the best Boston movies of all time. Well, that's, but that's the whole point is like it's like culture shock because she's coming from like, I would say Ellwood stries me as like a you know, Alabama Texas A and M student. Well, here's the thing, Davey, is that do you know so a fish, it's comfortable in the water because it can breathe under the water. That's right. But when you take the fish out of the water, It then has a difficult time because it needs that water to breathe. I get. Will it evolve? Will it adapt? I don't I know But it's a very different story coming from Seattle than coming from who, I'm very confused of I thought the first movie was she was set in her ways and she learns her first lesson while teaching her first lesson. Right. Everyone learns their first lesson in the first movie But apparently She's had other lessons in the past. That's this no. seeee, this doesn't this doesn't make any sense. News doubt Universal will be skipping influencer screenings for the Odyssey. Lucky for me, they forgot to say and no dumb fucking idiot podcasters either. Well you're part of the media. So like you are not just a simply I'm really I'm in the in between I don't really fall into either I'm not really media, I'm not a critic, I'm not press. I'm not an influencer. We call that you are in a liminal space You live in the gray. I love that. As long as you don't make too much money, your company's not going to fire you. And this this movie that's what I always tell my wife. My wife's always like, you should try and make money. I'm like It's better for us if I make what we're making now. Listen. and With more responsibility come more eyes and I can't do the things that I do in my spare time, which I'm learning now. Yeah. but You don't necessarily always want the recognition or the adoration because that comes with expectations. Anytime that someone new gets hired here and they say, Ohh, what is that guy doing? I'm like, we don't need to get into that. Speaking of ye, let's talk. Yeah. I would love to come and just like sit in an office and be like, what does that guy doing? like I don't no. Like Creed. But I'm looking forward to this movie. I don't know if if you heard of the Odyssey yet, Dave? No, tell me about it. This guy' going's trying to go home. tryrying to go because sounds great. ten year, twelve year void, something like that. twenty's trying to go home Oh I haven't asked you about this. Do you like that popcorn bucket with the horse foopa? No, I think they could I like the iMAax camera one better. I don't like the iMAax camera one to be made for this movie. That should just be like if you're going to see an iMAax movie, they just have that. Yes. So but the story is as you know that they they h the whole movie is And their IMac seventy, right? Yeah. And they had to make they basically invented a whole new camera just for this movie And I am very much looking forward to this move. by the way, I don't know if your listers know me very well, but I have I've been a classics teacher. twenty years. And so I've read every version of the Odyssey that there is in major publications. How many versions of the Odyssey are there? Like major publications? There's like four How many not major? Oh any Tom Dick and Harry, any, you know Joey bag ofonuts and nice band is it? but the Emily Wilson translation is is based on it's my favorite. I'm excited. News Dab Christopher Nolan also said that he watched Star Wars twelve times in the theater when it came out. That for me was just the essence of this media. Cateed an entire world that you can understand and live in that's absolutely different from everyday life. That's Great joy of movies. So what's have you heard of the theory of the monom myth? Go on Like the hero's journey. Like it starts like at home mono one, by the way. M one. So R is rail Yes, exactly. you get this. So the mono myth is like one myth. So like basically you're telling the same myth over and over. So if you think of like the Odysy it's like someone from like unknown origins who has like, you know, I can go through like the hero cycle with you. and it's funny that like Star Wars famously follows that herero cycle Would you like me to take you through the stage the stes of the monument?. So' a call of adventure., thenen the supernatural aid Mmhm, cross a threshold You find helpers and mentors, there's challenges and temptationations.ight, we're on the desert. goo ahead. You hit the abyss, death and rebirth. Then there's a transformation Okay Attonement Yes, a return. and then it begins again. So like that's like how Star Wars works and it's classically taken from I mean, that sounds like jesy. Every hero works. That's how every Superhero movie works, every comicook movie work. monomth So it makes so I'm saying, it makes sense that Christopher Nolan points to Star Wars because it's the same thing as the Odysy There's This july fourth, comees celebrate at America's Block Party, hosted by America two hundred fifty. They'll crack a joke and be like Hey, how about we make a how about a ratatoui two And then no, he doesn't want to do it. He just want to make a ratui too. Good for Brad Bird. Like we did that It's great. Radatou is great. I love Radatitou. Radatoue is and I think as they make more sequels to their other movies Ratatui gets more appreciation for how good it is as the standalone movie Paton Oswald, amazing amazing voice over work in it Just the idea of the rat. pulling the hair. Endless references as well now. Endless references and a great ride at Disney World, by the way if you've been on the Radatiti. Oh, an underrated ride. You go in there, you go into the Paris part of Epcot You're like a mouse under the cupboard in the kitchen. You're trying to, you know, grab some food, make a little bowl. You get spritzed.
