You'll get to try each of our workouts for a chance to win an ultimate Red Bull experience. They you have what it takes Unscripted Unfiltered, unafraid. Welcome to the Macro podcast. My name is Michael Syimon and I am joined by my colleague Jason Cross ood morning and our producer, Roman Loyola Hi there. This is episode number nine hundred and eighty eight And today is kind of sort of the second half of our WWDC. show Although it's really going to be focused on Apple Watch because We did most of this stuff last week, but U Apple Watch was such a small little part of the show We didn't get to it, but we're going to talk about it now. So March ofest twenty seven, of course Maybe rumors of the series twelve ultra what are we up to four Yeah. I see I see four N see four Ultra three. Yeah Ut right. So we're reallyally? Is it's a three now T The ultra three is out. Yes. is out. Okay, yeah, yeah. So ye, ultra four SE four, any new features the AI stuff, which I'm going to ask Jason for clarification because I don't really understand what it's getting and why other watches aren't Um And we'll see if we can get Roman to commit to buying a new Apple Watch this year. because He threatens every year. So we'll see if this is enough. Then we'll have this week in Apple History and we'll close with our comment corner. Speaking of comments. You can contact us through Blue Sy Facebook threads, search for Macro L look for a Blue Mouse logo Snd an email to podcast at Macro. com send us an email Comment underose, comomment under video G us your thoughts and we'll discuss them in a future show And it's like this summer and we have nothing to talk about tntil September, so please send us your comments Tom hi So Why show us twenty seven? If you like bllinked or tuned out or maybe coughed, like you missed it. It was such a very small little part of the show for the, you know, it was A couple of hours was like an hour forty for WWDC, they went to IOS and MacOS and all these things and platform improvements and At the very end, like right at the tail end of the series stuff, they's like, oh yeah, by the way, these features are also coming to Apple Watch. they didn't have a segment Kevin Lynch didn't get to do his his thing where he talked about fitness and all the new features. Like it was just Oh, by the way We're also again watch was twenty seven. So after after the keynote ended We went to the website, of course, because that's our job And there's like a bunch of features that people might not know about because Apple didn't talk about them. So We'll start with Siri AI because that's going to be the bulk of this. And my first question, Jason If IOS twenty seven can ship, right? So There's a couple of phones that get highigh end super duper Noew series stuff Then there's a couple of phones that get Apple Intelligence. I've one sixteen Pro and later And then there's a bunch of them that get IowS twenty seven but don't get the new Siri AI stuff Everything that gets Apple intntelligence, what is that? fifteen Pro end up I think gets Siri AI Right the seventeen Pro and the air On the pro, not the regular seventeen get a special newer, better version of the on device model and really the only like major difference there is much better dictation and the ability to sort of control how personal conversational emotive, the voices But you get you get all the Siri AI stuff on any that hasppones. yeah.. R onn all of those phones. But if you have an iPhone fourteen could still get IOS twenty seven Yeah You just don't get any of the Apple intelligence stuff. as you you get all the other se stuff, all the new health safety stuff and all the improvements and updates and better performance and all that all that stuff withith the Apple Watch Yeah I don't Apple has cut off Bunch of models It starts with Apple Y series nine That means a six, seven and the eight which were supported on W itS twenty six and have been supported for a couple of years are not getting Watch US twenty seven, neeither is the Apple Watch Ultra one which was only launched like two years ago or three years ago Yeah. So my question is If Apple does that with IiOS, they split it up You know, just because you can't support Apple intntelligence doesn't mean you're not getting IOS twenty seven and all the other features Do you do you have any insight? and you, you know, I'm putting you on your spot and you probably don't as to why Apple is not doing that with Yeah, but why. Why is why the cutoff I trying to remember if there's just like, sort of a RAM difference ' the big difference there is The neural enine I'm sorry, I't cut you up. but So the S nine got was the first system in package chip. that four core neural engine as part of the package That's Neither here nor there. I that doesn't have anything to do with Avel intelligence. that doesn't help it can, but again, forget about Ale intelligence. What about all the other stuff? you know, examples why could out? Typically, ignoring Apple intelligence, ignoring Siri AI and all that stuff.. the cutoff for newew OS updates has had to do with RAM. That's usually the thing is that we're doing some there's a lot of architecture stuff under the hood that just like requires more RAM. and that's why they didn't. And I'm trying they unfortunately, they don't publish any of those kind of specs. But I think that's the major difference. The S eight, as I recall, I know I know had a lot less cash But I'm trying to remember, I think it had a gig and a half of RAM. Acording to phhone arena It says that Ao Series nine has one gigaram. And then the series nine series n yeah Yeah, I know. it's confusing. I thought I I don't know how accurate that. What's the so Yeah, this says it says the same Now againain, whether or not I've seen another you don't know. Yeah. All right. so I saw a different L. Okay And the S eight head PDDR four as nine as LPDDR five and they went from a gig in half of memory to two gigs. and there's a twice the bandwidth and there's a lot of other stuff like a lot of The cashes are a lot bigger and stuff like that Um It may just have to do with that. It may have to do with all of this architecture stuff they're doing under the hood stuff.'re just they just can't fit it in the amount of RAM that they had anymore. That would be my guess for why they would just skip Watch OS twenty seven entirely Yeah, that that's the cutoff date because we've seen We've seen them many times go, well, there's a new The Apple Watch sereries eleven, but it's exactly the same as the series ten. R. And they have has an S eleven chip, but you look at the S eleven chip and you're like, this is the S ten chip. You just put an eleven on it. like But that wasn't the case, the S The S eight to the S nine was a real chip like architectural leap and it had been a few years because the S eight and S seven and S six were like the pretty much the same chip So I think that's if I had to guess for anything, it's like there was a chip architecture change at that And they're just doing a lot of stuff under the hood that doesn't necessarily have to do with Apple intelligence or anything The way they've architected the system, it's just not going to fit or work well. It's going to be slow, whatever. So that's that would be my guess what the cutoff is They won't you know, Apple won't tell you. No they won't. And it's somewhat ironic that they We devoted forty five minutes or so to all these platform improvements and everything's faster on older phones and older Macs. and we got, you know thirty percent this and fifty percent that. And then, oh, by the way, that watch you spent eight hundred bucks on a couple of years ago, you can't get watch it was twenty seven, which is the most lightweight operating system we make We support They supported the Apple Watch three for like six years And now they're cutting off watches from twenty twenty Three. whenever the Whenever the Apper Watch ultra So that was sold until I think august twenty twenty F. or three, whatever and they It's, you know, seven do ninety nine cents. It's not cheap And now you have a watch that it'll probably get security updates for another year, but Yeah, it'll run twenty six point. Yeah whatever for a while. But you won't get any any new updates. And it's it's very surprising from Apple for any device to cut off you know, more than like an expected generation This was, you know, When was was when was the series eight released twenty twenty two Yeah four years, you know, there was a while there where kind of five years was their number, you know, for most things. So it's a little early. I just don't think it's probably worth getting caught up about because I don't think most people use their watch for the kind of things where they're going to notice this massive difference. Well the ser the series stuff It was somewhat of a surprise and they didn't really talk about it. I don't really I don't have a compatible watch. I don't know if you've tried it on Y Appa Watch, but So we were under the notion that All this stuff needed at least eight gigabytes of RAM to run. which is why for It wasn't a supporter on homeomeod, it wasn't a supporter on Avalage It clearly has a different model because your watch doesn't do all the stuff that your phone does. It doesn't do It doesn't generate images or do any of this other kind of stuff, you know,' it's clearly a very trimmed down version of the model They do need those neural engine cores probably to do all the speech to text processing and all that It is a more sophisticated thing than the simple assistant that we used to have I think most of the processing still happens on your phone honestly, but I just think it's just that that Um what do they call it? the Siri, the system architect or something like that. I can't remember the name, but basically the traffic cop that says like, okay, they said this, we translated it in a text There's a thing that says, o, but what prompt is that and what model gets it? Does it get processed here? Does it get processed in the cloud? Does it get processed in the cloud on the big model? Are they asking for an image You know, Are they asking for data from other apps you know, that kind of, all that kind of thing. that probably I don't know if that runs on the watch or not, but It doesn't make I guess I' I guess I just don't feel like it's the hugest deal that A watch that's four years old run is still going to be on I watchatch OS twenty six when There's just not that much new in WatchOS twenty seven except for this AI stuff The phones from more than four years ago aren't getting all this new AI stuff either Hey great You know, So it's it's I would Would it have made me happy if they just released something and called it Watch I was twenty seven, but it's just none of the new things. I mean, because that's what we're talking about. So I just I guess it's just not that big a deal. For what people use their watches for and stuff It would be nice, I guess if somebody with a more than four year old watch got For example N find my app. There's a new find my app that looks more likeive watch more like the The phone one has more a like a map interface. That'd be nice I think they kind of doesn't work on a smaller screen and the screen's got bigger since the series eight and y yada. There's like some new tab gestures, but none of those old watches got any of the new tap gestures ever anyway because they had the old accelerometer and stuff. So you just wouldn't get most of this stuff anyway I just don't yeah, so it's nice, but I just don't think it's That big a deal Its It's not like cutting people's phones off. Yeah, I understand what you're saying. And you're're you're kind of convincing me about some of it When we first saw it, it was shocking. Like we did like a double take like, well at first they screwed up and they said the series nine w't never supported either. It was worse when they they originally said series ten and that people were launching it on their series nine, the beta And Apple said, whoops, Oh, the website's wrong. Yeah. And if you go to the website now it has been updated Now I am seeing this and it's like, okay because it's the ultra the first ultra head a series eight at S eight ship as well. and so I'm seeing it on an ultra comparison. So yeah the The sereries eight had one and a half gigs of LPDDR four RAM The S nine and above have two Okay. And it went from a two core nor enine to four core and there's the amount of storage changed a lot too. went from thirty two to sixty four gigs. They've got to store big models on the phone, I mean on the watch and stuff like that. So I think there was just that's just kind of where there was this big jump in hardware And we have criticized them for basically not improving the hardware at all since then But that was the time when they did. So I guess it kind of it probably makes sense Okay so I'm sorry that you don't have a compatible watch. I don't. I'm a little bumped at it. I gotta buy a a I to go buy a series twelve or whatever. I think I have a seven, I don't. And if I don't know, most people probably don't know which model they have. They just go buy one when they're ready to buy one and then they put on their wrist for a couple of years and you know, they move on The u So the CII stuff that we thought maybe wouldn't come to Apple Watch is there's no There aren't any caveats on Apple's Watch a was twenty seven page in the sense that There's no footnote that says it needs to be connected to a phone to work or it's got to only do this but not this. or according to what we're reading, I haven't done it because I don't have a watch That it's it's the full Siri AI Eperience, You get the app? you get in app actions or whatever those things are called, the The app intense stuff get Knledge database stuff Yeah personersonal context, all that. like it's all of Yeah I don't think there are a lot of in apppp actions, but well it s there are ye Share your flight details with family, play the song on as your training recommended set a new goal with your activity rings without having to look around. So you know, it'll do things. within your gses you' limited compared to iPh But what I'm saying is that It's impressive and surprising even though, you know, it's limited. does have a thing. It's the footnote. So when on that on that thing you just read the beginning just a Siri AI and there's all this stuff and there's a little four. Footnote four is Apple Intelligence on I was twenty seven iPadS a MacSord, blah, blah blah. All the twenty seven is available on all iPhone sixteen models and later, iPhone fifteen P proro, blah, blah, blah Mac models blog y ye yeah Apple Watch, series nine and later Apple Watch Ultra two and later and Apple Watch SE three when paired with an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone nearby with Siri and correct language set to and then the languages they support. So you have to have an iPhone that at least supports Apple intelligence and that is nearby. Is that the normal When paired with, or is that specific to this when paired with So it's like you need anle a paired iPhone to use it at all It is a footnote on the Siri AI capabilities thing. The Just As Siri AI, powered by Apple Intelligence, SiriAI is your conversational AI assistant with entirely new capabilities on Apple Watch Fotnote four note for is this stuff is only available on Series nine and up when paired with an Apple intntelligence powered iPhone nearby, nearby nearby is the big clincher that lets me know that like Yeah, it's going to be doing stuff on your phone So if I have a five G watch and I go for a run and has Siri something, he's going to be like it's going to be like, I can't help you right now Probably. Well, it will do all this it won't do any of this fancy Si AI stuff. It'll start timers and whatever, But like the yeah, though and the fancy stuff needs to have your phone nearby I have discovered it seems to be running a somewhat different version of the model on the watch for the system architect and stuff like that. So for example, one of the tests that I have been always done on Siri and it's always driven me nuts is to add time to a timer Don't understand why this was a problem Because if you cook You're like, you have something, you have a timer for fifteen minutes and you go, o, it's going to need a little longer. And if you ask Siri, add two minutes to the timer It will always say What time do you want to set it to? R And I'm like, no, I don't I don't know. I don't know how much it iss on it. I don't want to do the math. Just add two minutes. R This episode brought to you by Google Chrome You think you know a browser, but Gemini and Chrome, that's new. On the watch it doesn't On the watch, it still goes. what time would you want to set it to? with So you having this is series eleven with ser with watch OS twenty seven andard And it so there's something and that's one of those on device actions, like setting a timer and stuff like that The models aren't quite the same and they're not quite the same capabilities. and I don't know where the edges are, but I think I found at least one of them. Yeah That's strange because that seems like Pretty rudimentary if you're building this stuff It is, but it's all about like the scale of the. model there's a model like the system architect model that says these this is the waveform that came out of your mouth I'm going to eliminate the noise from the background to get the speech. I'm going to turn that speech into text and then I'm going to try to understand what that text means and turn it into an action And then I ha to decide where that action takes place, locally in the cloud, is it the the high end model? Are you asking me to generate a bunch of text? What's going on? That computational part, that like architect part, I think is got to be different on the watch because it's small and has no RAM and all that other kind of stuff. and it certainly doesn't seem to understand how to add time to a timer Very frustrating because I use my watch most of the time for timers. And especially when you can do all this stuff like add photos to it. I don't know who's out there doing all this photo stuff on their watch. I have all these things. I'm not really as impressed with all the new Si AI stuff on the watch except for the fact that like The watch as a Bluetooth device that's talking to my phone As Siri something, it's answering the same way my phone would. All the new Sia I stuff for my phone that I can do that for my watch I mean, I would expect that It's basically a Bluetooth speaker on my wrist, right? It's really my phone doing it So I'm glad that they have that stuff. I'm glad that the assistant's much better. But all this stuff where I'm like, am I gonna add am I going to change my rings goals G' in Siri? like on my No, I don't think I am Like maybe people are suuper into there motivation Yeah stuff and they use it. I don't know. And there's other stuff that like already you could do within it, like if you just asked navigate home like it would do that I'm not sending emails from my watch like without my phone Iry just not doing that There's a bunch of rumors of Apple making all these AI enabled wearable devices. We heard rumors of of a pin, a pendant Is this kind of like Beta testing that in some way? Because if it doesn't work on a watch, how the hell are you gonna get it to work on a necklace? I just I don't quite understand where The disconnect is between what's on the watch and what's on the phone. If you would need I do it right. I don't know where they're drawing the line. It's developer beta one. like Well there is that to stuff, right I think the the whole idea of the pins and or whatever is to provide eyes for Siri. I think the idea with those is that they're supposed to be a relatively cheap thing that's basically a Bluetooth speaker with eyes weere. and all the processing happens on your phone. We'll find out, like I mean, maybe they will have a lot of processing in there probably want to reuse an Apple Watch's SIP. It'll be I'll probably have an twelve in it or whatever is they're on when they get there. I'm not sure. I mean, we don't know anything about those rumored devices or when they're coming or what they're doing. their ways off They'll be on another version of SirAI by then. Do you think the Like the series, what do we up to twelve that's coming out in September twelve will be coming out this year Is there any Is there anything that they could do with the chip or the rim or something that's going to enable like a Another step Like they did so like, you know, we talked about the air in the pro Yeah, you know, or better thanth. Like do you think there's something coming Hardware wise That's going to like make people want to go and grab one of these watches because it does it better there's obviously something they could do because they've shipping the same chip with a new number on it for like four years. Like they could clearly Cple more ram it or whatever And if you're asking me what that would enable, I have no clue How much RAM is currently being used by the model? And do they have a model that uses just a gig more RAM but does more stuff or anything? Maybe, I guess, but that's a level of like what's going on deep in the development of that I I don't think anybody has any real insight into. U, So it's possible. we've not heard that they're doing anything with like design There were fancy new sensors or anything like that If they were smart th They tend to think Yeah and they tend to be I think they would realize as they have for the last couple of years. I mean, product development cycles are a couple years long, but they've realized for a couple of years now that like, oh, we're going have to do all this AI stuff, and that means lots of RAM So we should probably plan for the next S series chip that we're working on since that goes in home pods and this other kind of stuff to have more RAM. So it would not surprise me if they jumped from two to four gigs of RAM or something like that like to make another RAM league just to future proof it. even if they don't have anything ready to go, even if watchatchOS twenty seven is not going to do anything new Just so that Watch OS twenty nine doesn't cut off the S twelve.. so that it at least supports. The thing for Yeah you bring up you bring up homepod I didn't get anything. because that has an essay N say and we looked it up last week NS eight and an S four or something in the mini, like like those are those chips aren't capable of doing this stuff. So there's rumors, of course There are new at least a new hope on many in the works that I assume would get like that's the device that I feel like people would use the most for this stuff. Like I ask my My Alexa stuff questions like this all the time and it never, well, sometimes it knows it. But a lot of times it has no idea what I'm talking about. But that's when you're sitting, you're having a conversation with someone And they ask you a question. you don't want to look at in Google. You just say, oh, you know Siri, tellell me about whatever And yeah, and I don't understand why I understand that like Google and Amazon just everything goes to the cloud Right It does text the speech on the device and then everything goes to the cloud and they slurp up everything you said and they use it for training and everything else. And I understand Apple doesn't want to do that. But I don't understand why If I have any device in on the same network that is intelligence capable that they're not just handing it off to that I don't understand why my dumb old H pod can't just be like a Bluetooth speaker for my iPhone IP hadad TV, whatever it is that can run the model, right? So I'm kind of disappointed by that because It's not that my home pod's new or anything like that. It's just like there probably have been people who brouought a home pod men the last year and are going to be really upset. that it's still the it's not going to stop working. It's going to be the dumb old assistant though Yeah, and it seems like Apple has loosened its cloud rules a little bit with this new SAI stuff. Like they're using that privateou cloud comp more And It seems as though it's much more logistically and technically possible for an older home pod to access SAI than it would have been two years ago You I think they' Yeah they're still cutting it off. Yeah All right, back to watchatch OS. a couple of new things. So've you've downloaded and tried this all these feature. Yeah I mean I haven't tried every single thing and some of it is stuff that U I assume is working, like there's more accurate step tracking and much more accurate tracking of like workouts that are indoor workouts like indoor bike and indoor treadmill workouts where you're staying in one place. you're not doesn't have GPS of your distance and stuff Like those are getting more accurated I guess I mean, I haven't I would assume the numers better. I don't know So I haven't tested any of that stuff, but there's some new tap jessters and some new smart stnack stuff The thing the thing that caught me immediately is when you press the crown used to go straight to your apps list Now before you go to your apps list, you go you get a one page of the hex grid. It's except they're not they call it a dynamic app grid Yeah But they're big buttons. like the regular app grid buttons are super tiny. This is it doesn't move around, it's fixed and it's just The let's see, one, two Sven I'm looking at the picture. There seeven apps. S apps around Siri. Yeah, there's six apps. Oh no, five because one of them is the honeycomb Group shortcut Right. No there's six. The Siri thing is an app. that's just one of the recent apps in the picture you're looking at So it's your six most recently used apps and then the bottom one bottom button takes you to your app list. So this says series always front and center So we see Yeah I I don't think that mean that in the literal like I think they mean that like u Idologically, not like it's literally always the center spot on your grade. It's certainly not the center spot on my grade I at the uh That's weird they say that. It says with the series app It's always front and center. always isn'. And the picture they show is it's literally isnent. It's timers on mine. you know, o is that's the way I feel like that that's suuper useful because you're always hunting that stupid grid for probably the same five or six hours. I never use the grid. I've changed it to list view. Okay never go back.. But but so it was frustrating to me to think, well, now it's two taps to get to my list I to click the button and now I have to click the l thing to get to my list But honestly the sixth most used the the six most frequently used apps or whatever That's That covers me. I mean, I'm very rare that I need to go into one some other app than that said ye. It is a little bit faster. It took a little convincing. I saw that I got mad I'm like, whereere's my list Do you I wonder if they'll add that to like Gachoest twenty six point point eight or something, just so older watches get that because that's the kind of feature that's useful for everybody Yeah, and that has absolutely nothing to do with a newer accelerometer or more RAM or any of that kind of stuff. Just like, here's the A actually use the most or the most at this time of day or whatever, it should be fine Yeah, I bet they do that. I bet there's like like a twenty six point point eight point something update and they throw a couple of small little features in there Yeah, it could definitely happen around the same time this fall like when everything gets It's twenty seven real release and it's and that yeah, twenty six point seven or ater No be on at the time ' it's like design improvements and performance improvements and like, you know, there's no reason for watch OS eight or a series eight to miss out on that. I mean, or an ultra one, of course. So Um have you do you like the the The gesture for the smart stack, that seems awfully specific. I guess it's useful. I have used so the they've had a double tap gesture for a while. Yeah. And that brings up the smart stack And then you can Keep double tapping You can keep double likeike tapping your finger and it scrolls through the stack So now there's like a one tab and it Select. the one that you're on. That's what's new is the one tab There used to be just two Now they can detect a single tap to select something. I don't use my watch that way I use the wrist twist all the time. Because that's the timer one Well you can just cancel out whatever's going on. Yeah that's the go backack and So if a timer is going off, it stops the timer. If you're in the middle of an app, it goes back to your home screen.'s the make this go away thing. and I've got, you know, my hands covered with cooking stuff and a timer goes off and I just go like that Um I think there are probably people who do. U that tap thing and stuff. I guess it's cool if your hands are like if your other hands full I can imagine myself when I lived in San Francisco and I took the bus all the time and if I had to stand, which was frequently on the packed five bus and I had to have Hang on to something. I can see myself like doing that just because I don't have another hand to tap the screen with, but Oh, I wanted to ask you had it had an opportunity to see what how context works at all. Like you get a call it's supposed to show relevant information. Yeah, you have to call specific business numbers for that. Right Just like any old person and I haven't like been on hold with United Airlines or anything like that. So I can if that works, I can totally see that being useful because Every business wants your confirmation number or or order number or something. So if it pops up on my screen and this is also supposed to happen on the watch But if if it can pop up on my screen, the order number when I call a company because where's my delivery or whatever it is That will be awesome, but I haven't had the occasion to call something that my phone recognizes as a business do that It also apparently will tell you like if it's someone's birthday or something, which is kind of neat if they call you on there specific d. Oh you know, say like it's Jason's birthday. Like like, o, that's nice. Huh I will have to try that. So so next week My wife is my wife's birthday and I'll try and have her call be ins Yeah, yeah. if pops something up Y c 's cool Yeah. I know that the u The marketing around it at least on the watch and stuff is about business calls and stuff. So. It'd be cool. if it's somebody in your contacts and it knows something. It'd be great if it did other stuff too. Like if you have plans with that person, ye I like he just was smart enough to pop that stuff up. This sure This is I mean the Siri show. I have a lot to say about like Siri AI, how it works and all that other like on the phone. So we'll do that. We're going That' a whole show just way Yeah. We'll do that next. Roman we're on next week, right Yeah es. Yeah. so we'll do Siri AI pepper Jason with all sorts of questions because I'm I'm a terrible Apple reporter. I don't I don't install any of the developer bers until the public ber comes out because I'm just I need my stuff. I guess, I don't know. I'm wzy. O of onene of the two But I will pepper Jyson with questions because he's been using all this stuff He has an article going up this week about his first impression of Syria. Roman use it on the Mac, so We have a lot of experience already Uh, but yeah, we'll save all that for For next week Um, so Jason says if you have a watch OS series eight, it's not a big deal So you're not getting Watch it was twenty seven. and I think he convinced me. I kind of agree. Some of this stuff would be nice, but I just think like most of the stuff you do most of your things for is withith your Apple Watch wouldn't change anyway Um, And if you have a series eight, like things like more accurate step counting and stuff like that all requires a better sckelerometer and everything. So that's just, you know Um So I think that that's I don't think you would get most of this good stuff anyway, even if they gave you something and called it watchatch it was twenty seven, you wouldn't get You don't have the RAM for the new AI model. you don't have this, you don't have that. You'd only be missing a couple of little things like I I define my app being Yeah the app image instead of a weird list The A grid of course that you were just talking about. Yeah, that little app grid thing, although like you said, I think that one might end up coming to twenty six point something Yeah, Yeah and also like the design stuff and the performance stuff. likeike I'm sure they'll just bundle that intoo some update I mean I think they have to It'll probably come out in September, but yeah, I would assume tell't do that U U any any are we looking forward at all to the fall I'll start with Roman. any chance that you'll buy a new watch in September. Anything, m No I'm glad I didn't buy it one.ow, yeah, right. we've been trying to get you to buy one for four years. and if you listen to us, it would be a useless piece of junk at this point. Yeah U so I guess coincidentally Bar. My wife bought me a watch last year And so I wear it like on occasions and stuff So tryrying to get more in the habit of wearing a watch. This is just like a likeike a standard A watch watch. Yeah W a watch watch.. Yes. So it's more like jewelry than it is. Yeah A watch that I would wear every day. Of course, I didn't wear my Apple Watch today as I say that But I've been trying to be more conscious about it. so You know, I am leaning towards getting a watch this fall. I think I've said this before. You have. Yeah. Every year. E. Yes And but this year, right Well, what I'm thinking of, I've been I have been eyeing the ultra even though Even though it's really expensive, I like the look of it. I tell you like so you have a big wrist. So you could wear an ultra. like Mike and I have little baby. They would look ridiculously ridiculous. Which doesn't bother some people, some people wear it anyway. But yeah It's expensive, but it's not. It's aw For what you get, it's actually very reasonably priced.' It's a lot of watch. Yeah. There's a lot of tanium, they're bigger. There's a kind of bigger battery. They are all the cellular model and stuff like pay a big premium for that. You know Yeah, the forty six Millimeter series eleven with cellular is five twenty nine So you're adding a little bit on top of that, but like Jason said, you getting a ton more features, better battery life larger screen It's titanium. gotot the you know, it's really somewhat reasonably priced for what it is. I remember when they announced it and And they're going over all this stuff and we're Oh, man, this is gonna eleven ninety nine thousand dollars. eleven ninety nine centsars. We were expecting this really new H watchatch and they're like seven hundred. we're like, what Yeah And only seven hundred, they don't offer Options, right? It's's one high end watch . Here's a prediction though. One of the things that we had heard about prior to WWDC is that they're working on all this new fitness stuff Mm And updates to the health app combining health and fitness into a fitness plus and They had moved it under a new executive and rearchchitecting things to move faster so they can get these things out because it's been forever without this new fitness health stuff coming out. Y. And everyone's moving past them. Everybody's making one of these non watch fitness bands They're like, we can't compete with Apple Watch, so we're not going to try. Wherear you' Apple Watch and buy just a fitness band Right Google Fit and the Whoop band are the biggest right now, but there are other And there's I guess one other, I can't remember the name, but they're they're everywhere, right So My guess is that Apple in the in the OS twenty seven time frrame is going to release that. I think that's going to be one of their spring things and stuff. They just Starting last year, they stopped announcing anything that wasn't shipping with the first release. None of the point update stuff is at WWDC at all. That was new last year. They're doing it again this year Like everything announced is in the beta now Like that is So I think it's good I think a twenty seven point four update or something like that is going to have that and it could be that the watches that releasase this fall actually have a hardware update for a change and maybe they do some stuff with those that new fitness things that the older watches don't do Okay Maybe that's what the new capabilities are. they have to do with this new service coming up Our roll battery is the same It's like asking if all soccer players are the same. Take Messi, the most decorated player ever. Is there any other player who has achieved that? No, just him. Now take Duracl. Is there any other battery with power boost ingredients inside? No, just Duracl. Remember, goats only trust goats because they're built different And Messi only trusts Do yourself When you need to build up your team to handle the growing chaos at work, use Indeed sponsored jobs. Listeners of this shel will get a seventy five dollars sponsored job credit at indeed dot com slash podcast. That's indndeed dot com slash podcast. Terms and conditions apply Need a hiring hero? This is a job for indeed sponsored jobs Yeah, that makes sense. and that device you describe would obviously be a lower end device than even the Appleatch SE. and that would fit really nice with with that new spring event that's going to have the iPhone eighteen iPhone eighteen. Oh yeah. Now I don't I wouldt be I don't think they're making a watch band at all. No, no, no, no, no. I mean, so you were just talking about a surface I'm talking about this. Yeah, yeah, they've been for your iPhone Y the iPhone health app and fitness plus app were supposed to get big update with AI Health Cach and a new design and like a total overhaul We've been hearing about it for a little while now and they moved all that stuff under a new executive and they're re architecting things to like scrap some of their bigger plans so they can get it out sooner and all this stuff. but we didn't hear anything about it at all. Because it's not coming in Watch OS twenty seven. I'm thinking it's coming in watch OS twenty seven point four. And yeah, no I agree with some of our commentators on the site and stuff that Apple should make one of these bandans But they'd be nuts to do it. Like they're competing with themselves. They already dominate the market. They'll just make the bands obsolete by giving people all the things the bands do that they don't do now. just just it's a software problem know Yeah k they'll kill these bands by making Apple Watch do all the things these bands do except for how Amazing battery life Yeah There's only so much you can do with battery life when you Like you're competing with something that doesn't have a screen on it So health plus coming in March, maybe U there is twelve v. I don't Have we heard rumors of the Ultra four? I don't even remember the rumors. There aren't many of them. I mean, we know we're getting to series twelve. they do that every year, but the ultra doesn't come every year and yes, he doesn't come every year. So. It's possible we only get the one model that Af event is going to be Obviously Ultra folding phone Fcused So whatever I watch stuff think you No regular eighteen maybe Maybe Ultra four and not regular Apple Watch. Maybe thele regular Apple Watch indpace We could do that. We haven't heard much about that We haven't heard much in the way of rumors about any of it, so it's possible that it's just a quick You know, ten minute segment And then they move on to the phones because that's the allch is going to dominate that show Oicially y Yeahah. And, um The only rumors we've heard so far is sort of confirmation that, no, they're not changing like the style or the size or giving it some amazing new screen technology or anything like that. like it's pretty much going to be what the Apple Watch has been for the last few years with the exception of like, we don't know what the processor is or whatever. Yeah, that'll be the question is if they if the CAI stuff is better or more capable or Yeah, local or whatever on the new stuff or they enable some, whatever. Yeah, but things like Things like blood glucose monitoring is still ppe dream and all of this suddenuff. So there's just There is a watch face that was rumored that they didn't talk about, so that could beome Yeah. I think that all could be part of some Apple Watch thing where they talk about Health thing and you modular watch face Maybe that ties into the new health service in stature F, well we'll see. So Why Choice twenty seven does exist? There's a couple of new features. If you have a series eight or earlier, you're not getting them And um, You know, Jason is not impressed with the new S AI on the watch I No, I don't I don't wantan to make it sound like I'm not impressed with it does do a lot of things that it didn't do before It still does like have the conversation, but it's clearly not doing exactly what the phone is doing because it can't add time to a timer and the phone can So that's such an oddly specific thing that do. Yeah That is. It really is weird. It's always been weird. I've always there's never been any good reason why I couldn't do that. And I was that's for sure. exxcited that they When I tried it on my watch do it. I was so mad they didn't fix it and Just thought, you know what justust to see. let me try it on my phone. and then it worked and I'm like, what the hell? that I tried it tried it on each several more times just to be sure I'm not crazy and it works on the phone and not Well, maybe the beta two or three willile aile thing a bug repor or a feedback thing. I That's yeah. We are in developer beta one. There's going to be some changes All right, so I'le watch coming this fall, watchatch W twenty seven coming this fall Si AI on the watchatch coming this fall and we'll probably have more to say about that between now and then. ono you Roman All right, so it's time for this week in Apple History So on june nineteenth two thousand nine So about seventeen years ago, getting good at the math in my head. released iPhone OS I can't remember did they call it IOS back then? I don't think they did. I think they Yeah. So they operated the iPhone operating system. They used version three. And what's remarkable about this particular version is that it was the first version to incorporate cut copy and paste functionality. Also mult multimedia messages MMS Yeah text messages Yeah Yeah So it's funny to think that the iPhone when it was released didn't have cut copy and paste because it's been like basic staple of every, you know, The copy and paste was essentially introduced with the Lisa operating system. It was incorporated MacOS. you know, when they developed Windows, they made sure they include copy paste But yeah, to think that it wasn't on the iPhone h it's kind of I can't even remember like it's been a long ago if that was a hindrance or not. I guess I think it did. Yeah. It was a hindrance. but I don't have any like memories of me going Oh why can't I could, you know, be frustrated by it But you want to copy something and paste it into a text message or something. Yeahah Yeah U IOS came with with four just to just to add a this was the last version wasn't I Right Yeah There were a few other big things about it. Messages was text only until then. This was the first time they added MMS so you could like send phhotos in the text messages, right? Y. u the camera Um only with the three GS the camera could record video. There was no video before that. It's just pictures And what was the other big? Oh, find my iPhone. This was find my iPhone's debut. u so there was it's kind of a big kind of the big Release. Yeah. I think the three GS and the OS that went with it was the iPhone'es kind of hockey stick moment where they went for like the die H fans lining up for the Jesus phone, but the numbers weren't really that great. And then wasn't that the first one where you I might be wrong. It started to reach other carriers. Did the eighteen T thing end with the That was a Yeah. I think it was the iPhone four was the one that got to Vver Other features include had new support for Caldv the calendar. seems like another basic kind of feature, but not it didn't wasn't introduced till this version U what else did it have light Sotlight search introduced. Yes Oh and a new voice memos app That what you Yeah, Voice mems was new. Voice memos was a big deal Gording back to cut copy and paste, there was a Engineer' name was Ken Cosienda he's a former Apple Eger who worked on IPot OS and He explained that Cy paste wasn't included in the original version of iPhone OS simply because they didn't have the time to do it right M Yeah. Well, it took them two years after that deadline. to get it in. so it must have been some technical reason. Right And now in IOS twenty seven copy paste feature if you c something if you copy something or cosy, it'll appear in your keyboard to make it that much easier than having to tap and hold and find paste. It'll just like a little bit a little icon re re in your keyboard to pop it in Yeah You know, the best thing is like if when I copy from my Mac or from my iPhone and then paste it onto a different platform. Oh, that's awesome But man you to write your hander off a hundred times a day. I do that all the time. So we have a quick Do we know when that came out, Universal copy paste? I was ten Be I alost turn. Okay Yeah U yeah, that was like the quaint early days of iPhone. Yeah it was a very small of users that had, you know, a couple million but not like it is today And like cason says the three G S and then The iPhone four really blew everything away because that was like a massive redesign. metetal glass, it was gorgeous and the re to display and all that. So yeah. and you know, they broke away from it can only be on this carrier with a subsidized like contontract plan and stuff like that. they got to other carriers. It started to go international, like All that other kind of stuff. And just like battery life reliability, all like all these other things big leap right at that time period. And that's when they went from selling like a couple million a year to selling Yeah, T or so. Yeah And now it's like, g's like two hundred or something Yeah, it is I it's All something like M sev sell like seventy million the first quarter that they get. like the third fourth quarter of the year Yeah, it's ridiculous So that does it for Apple History. So now let's move on to comment corner Donnie via email says, I was surprised and disappointed to learn that my new iPhone seventeen will not be getting Apple intelligence apparently. Does this mean that we will be forever stuck with the old Siri Will there be any seri improvements for otherwise The I supported IowS devices. The sevent Soeen get it The seventeen gets Siri AI, It's a little confusing. What you don't get.'s there's a even better. It has an on device model and it gets the new voice and it gets all the capabilities you were seeing and the chat bot, it gets all that stuff It gets all the like things where it indexes your phone and learns all about you in the personal content, you get all that. What you don't get is even better dictation model. and An even more sort of emotive voice with the ability to sort of control its speed and how emotive it is, like the customize, the ability to customize it and stuff. The voice does sound different But it's not that and better and more human, but you don't have that extra layer of control So that's right now, for anything they've announced, that's the only thing you get on the Air and the pro Everything else that gets Apple Intelligence, all the fifteen proro and up They get all the S AI stuff, they get all the other stuff The sixteen doz, I don't think. My sixty sure Yeah sixteen pro It was the sixteen that was the buildt for Apple intelligence stuff. Yeahah, I think ye. Yeah. So the sixteen pro Right And then the sixteen and up Robin B the email said. One thing I haven't seen clarified so far and I think is pretty important is how much, if any of the Siri AI Apple intelligence is optional Or is it the case that it is not optional at all And or the best way to limit features is by using an older device that works with less features Jason, you can turn it off, right I'm looking right now All right, so there's just This is developer beta one, mind you. right. So in the settings series, there is no just turn it off swwitch, but I'm looking for Apple intelligence. There's So there's no more like Apple intelligence menus just a series that's. There's no big thing. there's a there's a box for the expressive voices, preview and messaging, all that other kind of stuff. I'm trying to see. So that Ale intell people you were able to not use C your toggle at anything in the past. Yeah. Well yeah, but even just not even that. just turning Cerei off, you were able Yeah Oh, oh, noope, I'm sorry. I was I was looking for a toggle. There's a big red button at the bottom. T theory off. Jason, showing the button, Yeahah, it's pretty clear. So yeah Rob backat the bton absolutely turn it off the turnsory S you can't turn it off. And when you install it for the first time, it goes through that same series setup process where it wants you to say a bunch of stuff. And you can just say like nope, but not now, like, you know So Yeah, I think you can just turn it all off if you want. Our last comment comes from The Hindud via Spotify who says, why are some people not happy with a good under the hood update do not really care about Apple intntelligence, but these under the hood updates are crucial for my phone and Mac. Yeah. I'm happy with I think it's awesome Yeah Yeah. this is For devel this is the most solid and performant developer beta one I've used, I think. Ever? Like Um, So like thats That's great. I think all these performance improvements for everything all the under the hood stuff and all the little details, like you said, like the putting something in your clipboard on the keyboard and all that that kind of stuff. like Man, that stuff's awesome Yeah, D. I'm loving all that little tweaks to the weather app, you name it. So although I we will say that this is not the SiriAI episode. But I will say A lot of people say, I don't care anything about Sa or AI, but like It does such a good job onnce it's indexed your phone of like knowing all this stuff from your messages and your calendar and all this same stuff, it actually is legitimately useful in a way that like Chad GPT and all these other LLM's aren't. It's actually not rate at all those kinds of things, it actually can do useful stuff for you. You would you care. Like what wanted to do. yeah. Okay, cool. Yeah T to next week to get more details from Jason.. That's a good teaser That does it for comment corner Oh, that's me. Hold on. And that does it, I lost my notes.
