We continue our look back at America's economic history and some tips for getting going on those financial chores you've been avoiding rom Marketplace in Washington, I'm Kimberly Adams. This week, we're marking two hundred and fifty years of the United States and looking back at some of the defining moments that shaped the American economy. Today, we're picking up where we left off yesterday when the North and South started down different paths. though, as it turns out, those two economies were deeply intertwined The Industrial Revolution in the Northeast of the United States was also led by cotton textiles supplied by Southern pllantations It's also true that there was southern demand for many Northeastern goods do feed off of one another At the same time developmental dynamic that emerged from the slave economy, I think had limits That's Jonathan Levy, historian at Sciencecess Po in Paris. He says something shifted around eighteen thirty and the two economies began to pull apart. And eventually we see a new dynamic emerge from the north much more entrepreneurial economy. economy that has public education. of different kinds of human capital Re only after eighteen thirty that you start to see a divergence between of the Northern and southern economies. But I'd add that economic diversion was really important in creating political lines of conflict that ultimately led to the Civil War Jonathan Levy at Sciences Po in Paris. The private payroll processor ADP is out with its monthly check on jobs. Private employers added ninety eight thousand positions in June, falling short compared to May's count of one hundred twenty two thousand Here to break it down for us is Susan Schmidt, portfolio mananager at Exchange Capital Resources. So Susan, what's behind today's numbers? We are seeing a slightly light number at ADP, but not concerning, rememember government numbers come out usually on Friday this week on Thursday after the ADP report Hospitality does seem to be a little bit softer, but we had big hiring in hospitality in the past few months. It doesn't seem to be alarming. We've had almost a balance between goods and services hiring this month Switching focus, the markets here in the US have just been hitting record high. and I feel like that feels very strange to people, especially those who aren't in the markets that the economy is not necessarily feeling great. Consumer confidence has been a bit low compared to a year ago and historically, but the markets are doing great So we just finished the second quarter. The S andP just in that quarter was up fifteen percent, The NSDAQ up twenty one percent Those are the strongest quarters we've seen since twenty twenty when we came out of COVID and decided there was a light at the end of the tunnel. This is all driven by AI. If you had money in the market, you're thinking things are great. If you didn't have money in the market, you missed out on all of that. Now, it remains to be seen how market levels do for the rest of the year and this continued volatility will probably remain. Susan Schmidt is portfolio manager at Exchange Capital Resources.
