The US dollar hit a more than one year high this week on the US dollar index ticker symbol DXY, if you were curious , which measures the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies. The dollar's up about five percent since dipping to a recent low in late January before the Iran war started, and it's been rising in fits and starts ever since. Marketplaces Mitchell Hartman explains what's behind the increase . The dollar's recent rise is mainly driven by different ial economic growth and interest rate expectations between the US and other big economies. U. S. economic growth has been strong recently, and consumers continue to spend it up. Jonas Golderman at Capital Economics says the Federal Reserve is responding as expected. They've stopped talking about cutting interest rates and they've started talking about hiking interest rates. Meanwhile, Europe, the UK, and other developed economies are hurting more from the spike in energy prices and can't afford to hike interest rates without squelching growth. And so that differential moves in favor of the US and the dollar strengthens. And here's what the recent dollar strengthening is not, says Joseph Ganyot at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, investors fleeing to safety in troubled times. This is not a safe havensplate. The april twenty twenty five liberation day tariffs coupled with all the anti foreigner rhetoric has really dented the safe haven attractiveness of the dollar. Geneo says what's going on here is just the heightened lure of US interest rates and dollar valued assets plus the underlying pull of our big, relatively strong economy. Later this morning, we're going to get the latest reading of the personal consumption expenditures index. PCE, it's a key measure of inflation, here to break down what to look for in today's numbers is Susan Schmidt, portfolio manager at Exchange Capital Resources. PCE is going to be a focus of course for the Fed, one of the data points they look at, but it's going to be year over year, month over month increase. Is it greater than expectations . Inflation, those higher prices has been running hot. So above expectations the last couple of quarters. And don't forget we have a new Fed chair, Kevin Warsh at the helm. And so the Fed tone towards inflation seems to be that they're going to take a harder look at inflation. It hasn't been tamed as they had hoped.
