We're waiting on Supreme Court rulings that will have major repercussions for the federal Reserve as well as presidential power over executive agencies , not to mention some key data releases that will help us get a sense of how our economy overall is faring. Good morning. We have a shortened trading week because of the fourth of July holid ays. So the jobs report that would usually come out on Friday is coming on Thursday . What will you be looking out for in the June report ? Well, we've had a string of pretty strong numbers and we are looking to see whether that continues or whether some of that was for example, a pull forward of hiring reflecting the World Cup , which led to really strong gains in leisure and hospitality or whether we're actually seeing the l abor market pick up a little bit. Tomorrow consumer confidence numbers come out. What are you expecting there? Yeah, consumer confidence has been low. There are different measures, but they're both low. And that reflects that consumers are feeling the pinch on purchasing power from inflation . We are now at a point where wage growth isn't keeping pace with inflation and consumers are actually seeing a reduction in purchasing power and that hurts . And how much of that is to do with the sort of ebbs and flow of the Iran war? A lot of that has come from the spike in energy prices associated with the war , but we are also seeing a firmer trajectory of underlying inflation or core inflation. That's been running above three percent . And that's well above the Fed's target of two percent. That is a tax on consumers. Julia Coronado is founder and president of macro policy perspectives.
