So I'm excited to talk about this case. There's just so many important topics that need to be highlighted in it and yes, the work that the family has done since this occurred, is truly remarkable So today we're going to be covering the case of Jared Bit and Clay Wh's a real peace. of shit. There's no other way to put it. Allahu Zahur a selfish, narcissistic abuse of man that, uh, couldouldn't be more douchey. Yeah, truly. There's no other way to describe him The victim in this case is Allison, who was his wife And on the outside, it looked like Jared and Allison had this picturese marriage. They had three beautiful daughters And life seemed to be going well. Jared is this successful real estate businessman His great grandfather is the founder of the Scouts organization in Australia and You know, he's got kind of this prestigious legacy that he's trying to live up to But behind the scenes Jared is running around. liivving a double life having a fair after a fair until culminates in the disappearance of his wife, Allison And so is what we're going to be digging into today. It's a very tragic case at that. But as Kenall pointed out, a lot of important things to discuss with it as well. Jared Man. ust you're going to hate this guy. He is the absolute worst Before we talk about Jared, let's first start talking about Allison and who Allison was. So Alison Dicky was born on july first, nineteen sixty eight to her parents, Priscilla and Jeff. And she was primarily raised in Red Bank, which is a suburb of Switch Queensland which I just love to say that Iip switch And Allison grew up in a very unique of situation an incredibly close tight knit family based community And aside from her siblings, her sister Vanessa and her brother Ashley, the majority of her extended family dre up on the same side of the street. which I think is so cool. I mean be terrible if you hate your family, right? But They were very close and it sounds like it was a wonderful experience for them And yeah, just super, super unique. Well, especially with kids too once you have a family of kids and to have all of your relatives and aunts and uncles and grandparents like within a close proximity of you Super clutch because we are You guys built in babysitters on the block. Totally. and then just be able to have those bonds with your extended family that's something a lot of people miss out on because You know, Fistine lives Yeahah. And as her cousin, Karen Bagnell said, she lived next door to Priscilla specifically, who lived next door to their other aunt and uncles, who lived next door to their grandmother's house And all of this was on a single side of the street in Red Make. Allison's family home was cozy. It was a white timber house with a shed in the back and trees along the footpath. And according to Karen, on rainy days, they would bring out their bikes and surf together on the impromptu channel that formed along the street. prettyretty cool She said it was a fabulous time. We used to ride all around here. Karen said that their family values growing up in this small town surrounded by loved ones, really forged Alison's character. She said, It doesn't go away from you passion in you. becausecause all of our family lived on the street Everybody knew one another. So it was safe. and that's the other huge plus of living all together like that. You'd feel much more comfortable with your kids. Surfing in the channel. This is so cool Karen recalled how she and Allison would play tennis on the courts across the road, rode bikes together to Red Bank State School And they would even go to parties together as they grew up in their teen years. Their families even kept a bill at their local corner store that they would pay once a week I love that And the kids would add extras to it without their parents knowing, which is so something I would have done Karen said we used to put an ice cream on the bell on the way home and Allison sometimes would get in trouble from her mom for doing it. And as Allison grew older, her passion for family and fun turned into a drive for high achievement She earned a prestigious spot in the Australian' youth ballet for five years and also received a scholarship to Ipswitich Girls Grammar School, where she became the school vice captain her senior year She was even crowned Miss Brisbane in a beauty pageant. I mean, she was absolutely gorgeous. And although she briefly attended the University of Queensland majoring in psychology, she actually did not finish her degree Instead, she became the global head of human resources at Flight Center an Australian travel agency. and in this position, Allison managed three thousand employees in six countries. So Pretty huge position And it was here at Flight Center's George Street Office in Brisbane She met the charismatic and seemingly Illustrious Jared Bayen Clay Now Jerry's background is much less straightforward and idyllic a little bit different than his wife. Born in nineteen seventy as Jared Clay and initially raised in Bournemouth Jared's family soon moved from Zambia to Rhodesia Wh is now Zimbabwe, for those that don't know, where their legacy held sway over the short lived country's English colonial pride See, Jared's great grandfather was Lord Robert Baden Powell, the English liieutenant general who fought numerous colonial wars across Indian, Africa while a colernel. H writings on the various battles he participated in partarticularly, the siege of muffacking grew in popularity, especially among young boys and led him To create the Scouts Association in nineteen ten which have now is known as the, you know, Boy Scouts of America here in the U S and the Girl Guides organizations worldwide In Rhodesia, where figures like Baden Pa almost mythologizeed, Jared's family held an important status even though he did not share his great grandfather's last name. However, when Rhodeso fell and became the independent Republic of Zimbabwe in nineteen eighty. Jared's family felt it best to migrate again, and this time to a successful English settler colony Australia And now even though Lord Baden Powell's influence was still strong in Australia, with a hotel in Melbourne named after him as well as five streets across the whole country The family wasn't as recognized as they were in Rhodesia So once the clay settled in Australia, Jared's father chose to change the family name from clay to Baiten dash clay to really play up their lineage and connection to a once important figure in English colonial history be honest shopping for clothes is either fun for you or it's a living nightmare. And you know what? I'm split on it. Jared's family lived in Melbourne for about eight months before settling in Touumba in nineteen eighty one He attended Gabinbar State School before attending Tolomba Grammar School, where he completed year twelve While in high school, Jared worked as a waiter and did some odd jobs picking strawberries and potatoes in Lockyer Valley. He continued these gigs as well as spending three years with the Australian Army Reserve as a training officer while he earned his Bachelor of businessus And from nineteen ninety one to nineteen ninety three, Jared worked as an accountant for an audity company before becoming a company accountant at Digner Footwear And this was along the long winding road that led him to work with Alison at Flight Center where he was a travel consultant and managed his own outlet Now, while Allison did immediately fall for this charismatic young man and considered his family's lineage to the important Robert Bayen Powell Her friends weren't so easily taken in. They said this of their relationship in the beginning. Allison did love him and we supported her, but we felt that she was too good for him back in the early days, but she was in love and love is blind. We never liked him because he was never authentic Al always thought he was superior Unlike the scout he pretended to be, he was a coward with women. And that's such a tough position to be in as a friend Obviously, you want to support your friend in their relationship, especially if they're happy And it's not like initially there were red flags about him being dangerous or they felt like she was you know, in trouble with him I just feel like that's such a tough place to be in of just like, oh, he just gives the he seems like an asshole Well I mean, not many people Yeah. and not many people like somebody who's like walking around acting superior to everybody. Yeah. Yeah. That's definitely a turn offff I agree. And Jared seemed to be in love with her too, at least at first. The two got married in nineteen ninety seven before they traveled overseas Settling in London for a time as Allison had a few job opportunities lined up And while Allison worked with Dale Carnegie Training, Jared worked as a financial systemys consultant with Blockbuster International Although this is only for six months Mainly, Jared worked under his family name with the International Scout Center, first as a volunteer, then as an assistant director for about a year of their time while abroad Allison and Jared then returned to Australia in nineteen ninety nine and went back to Flight Center where he worked until about two thousand. The next few years of Jared's employment are a bit spotty, but we can assume that he worked with the scouts in Australia as numerous promotional materials and videos feature him But we also know that this is when the couple begin having children eventually raising three girls And Allison decided at this point to become a full time stay at home mom In two thousand four, Jared officially obtained his real estate agent's license and started as the principal and managing director of Century twenty one. Westwide. be where he held employment the longest Then their family rented a home in Brookfield, which is one of Brisbane's most affluent neighborhoods. They were doing well. And many of the properties that Jared sold were located there The neighborhood itself was rather quaint, despite the wealth of those within. They were also conveniently in walking distance of a small Brookfield genereneral store and the Brookfield showhgrounds and also the local primary school where Allison taught ballet once a week I think Jared forgot about his family name, off course, it's like the only thing he has to be proud of He once again used his lineage to try and sell homes and of course, himself, really. On his blog he wrote Jared's personal philosophy of ethical excellence and team loyalty derived from his lineage as the great grandson of international Souts leader, Robert Biden Powell found their perfect landing spot in the field of real estate Jared became a big name in Brisbane High Society, addressing assemblies of high school students interested in Keys to success in life hanging out with local council members and even toying with the idea of becoming a politician himself. becausecause of course he did However, that wasn't the whole truth about Jared Bat and Clay. Wellile on the outside, he was a successful businessman and a devoted husband and loving father Allison's friends, of course suspected that he was a complete and utter fraud. And they would be right Yeah, their intuition was spot on. Good friends always know While Jared regularly updated his business blog informing people about life as a father and the successful real estate deals he've been involved in He also added another more anonymous online account. On this one, he withheld information regarding his great grandfather, despite how often that he'd bring this up on the daily, it seems like. On New Ye's Eve, twenty ten, Jared created a profile on the Swinger' Online dating website, mayay you've heard of it before Adult Friend Finder under the fake name Bruce Overland Here instead of talking about his laurels as a businessman, he wrote Married but don't want to be looking for some sex on the side I don't understand how A statement like that would be appealing to anyone Perfect. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Hey, adult friend findinder I'm pretty sure that's probably a whole category. Adult Friendfinder, is that a worldwide thing? Yeah, I think it's a pretty big website Really Not that I know anything. I was gonna to say, are you familiar with this? No, I feel like de That website was like in the news for something. It does ring the bell to me. Adult Friendfinder. If I remember correctly, adult Friendfinder was also involved in the Ashley Madison hacks. I was That's what I was thinking It says The world's largest adult dating site So is it kind of Ashley Madison coded where it's for affairs or not specifically. I think typically that's kind of who it's marketed towards even though it's not It's not saying that outright, but I think that's why The clientele probably right, right. And I think just like Ashley Madison It was plagued with bots. It was like mainly real men making accounts and then Hello Botx talking to them. Okay. and you can also sign up as a couple. interestnteresting And while many people in town, including police officer Sergeant Murray Watson, described him as one of the nicest guys in the world, only a few members of Jared's inner circle were aware of his tendency to have affairs And while it seemed like Jared had been having casual sex throughout his marriage, he had been engaged in at least three serious long term affairs since two thousand six His former business partner, Phil Broom, said this about Jared Jared has a public face, which is ethical moral and upstanding. And a lot of his legacy is due to his great grandfather My Godd, how much are we gonna hear about his grandad of' so removed at that point. G grandfather. Yeah. L I dont care. Do you even know who your greatrand grandfather is like Unless you have a famous great grandfather, most of us don't even know our great grandfather, or their name well We did name our son after your great grandfather. True, But that's the only reasonue. Mid. True mid, ye. Well, I had to look it up to even figure out that. Act my aunt had to tell me. Yeah, you didn't even know didn't know I just likek the name. Yeah. Well, he went on to say he was involved in all the right groups, but it's always about what is in it for him. He is politically savvy. He would lecture staff about lying and then he would continue his long term affair Phil recalled a trip the two men took to a Gold Coast conference when Jared checked out of his hotel room at midnight. Where you going, Jared Pretty obvious. what's going on there M Unless it's, uh to the fast food joint, but You know, Jared's interested in more than that And then another conference in Sydney Jared was openly affectionate with another woman after spending the previous night with a different lover So he's so gross. He's getting with multiple women at one conference When Phil confronted Jared about his affairs, he said they were swearing and crying and he uses his emotional blackmail to get what he wants because he's an absolute coward Jared is the type of guy that will seek forgiveness rather than ask permission s swearing and crying Wh' tell a I't any love. I need That's my impression of Jared According to Phil Jared said this during the confrontation On continuue to fuck her for the sake of the business. Dgusting That is cold Aside from the numerous online profiles, Jared also made a habit of visiting seex workers spending thousands of dollars late into the evening while Allison is at home Being a mother, taking care of the house, raising the daughters, while this piece of shit is out Having sex with sex workers. Behind his wife back. Disgusting behavior Ugh, waste of a man. But perhaps Jared's longest affair was with a woman named Tony Mcgh and initially come to his real estate office as a client before becoming one of his employees And Tony said that she admired Jared and believed in his integrity because that's who he presents himself as. She explained that she felt an attraction to him at first, but tried to fight it, given that he was married She said I was attracted to him before it dawned on him However, back at home, Tony's own seventeen year relationship was crumbling She was honest with Jared about her situation at home and provided her with support and even said similar things about his own marriage with Allison, of course According to Tony, Jared explained that his marriage no longer loving and that they were only together for the children. Tony said that at least to her, their relationship could blossom into something real as they began their affair in two thousand eight One that would last over three years on and off According to Tony, she thought their future would be normal, that they were simply two people who loved each other And she said that he told me he would marry me one day I wanted that. Even though she didn't know for sure, Allison had her suspicions that something was wrong with her marriage. Yeah, I think He's not good at hiding it the way that he thinks he does. I could just see he's I'm sure she had some inkling that he was up to no good. Yeah. Yeah. she's got women's intuition She even wrote in her journal, Friends think we are all together. I feel like a phony when I am out with Jared and his office staff, whichich is a tough place to be. She's having to go and fake this this happy marriage just to look good in front of, you know, his business partners and employees and just going through the motions when There's no, you know their marriages and in peril. I mean, it's it's that's a really tough place to be. and ultimately, you know, she's thinking about her family. she's She's going at it with all the right right reasons and Jared is just no regard for her or any care for her whatsoever. And that's what's so heartbreaking about this situation is she really did want it to work you know, for the sake of her family and for her marriage and I'm sure she had plenty of other reasons. But he had also grown extremely cruel and just critical towards her. He told Allison routinely that he didn't love her or he would comment on how horrible dinner had been or how lazy she was for not having cleaned the house. So he was just totally verbally and mentally abusive to her According to Allison's friends, like I just said, Leaving Jared was really never an option. They always said that she said she was always going to fix it. But always needing to keep a successful, friendly face to the public, Jared wrote on his little blog about Allison's fortieth birthday where she and her friends went to a health spa while he stepped up As a father for once and watched their three daughters, and he wrote I've been trying to squeeze in some work and assistance with running the business but said that after only a weekend, only a weekend watching their girls. He suddenly had a newfound respect for the work that went into becoming a homemaker. He wrote, I'll certainly be more understanding in the future when I come home from work and find that dinner isn't on the table and my foot spa Pre warmed Yes, this bitch had a foot spa that he wanted to have pre warmed every day when he came home from work This guy' trying to be Lord Baen Powell so bad. Dude, I would be mother for You will address me your foot spa to come home every night. There I would think something marriage would be over. I would think something's wrong with you if I came home and there was a foot spa waiting for me would be so annoyed if I was like getting your foot spa. fll Every day, bro, Din in a foot spot. How naster your feet. Foot spark. Bitch anyyway But that feeling didn't seem to appear in Jared's private affection towards Allison. Of course, this is all what he is saying to the public, trying to make himself look like, o, I stepped up as a daddy for a weekend and I have this new respect. He doesn't respect her worth a damn. it's all just a show for everyone else When people hear that Mint mobile plans start at fifteen dollars a month Their jaws drop and they're like, Josh, come on man. I would give anything if my partner would love me and make love to me. I hate when my husband treats me like shit. If I only had given more sex and put some more work into our marriage and had not just been a mother, which is just devastating to read that statement from her. It seems like she put so much blame on herself for his actions. And that's just so incredibly sad. Allison just deserves so, so much better. Yeah. I mean fuck ask Jared. He's manipulating her every which one Oh ye and making her feel less than and so her self confidence is in a horrible place and It's it's a sad place to be. Yeah. I mean, it's it's devastating. terrible Then in twenty eleven, Allison learned about Jared's affair with Tony. And of course, Tony wasn't the only woman that he'd been seeing during his time No matter what he told either of them So, you know, he's making all these promises to women and he's not upholding any of them. He's still running around saying, God knows how many women on the side He agreed to meet with Allison in the parking lot of a McDonald's after she called him to say, We need to talk. And according to Jared, she just came straight out and asked me if I was having an affair with Tony, and I said, yes, I was I have been Jared agreed to end the affair immediately then prourueed to go over to her home in the suburb of St. Lucia. and in his words said, I just told her that Al had found out and I didn't want to be with her I wanted to be with Allison and the girls And of course, not only was Tony upset because the relationship that she had with this man that she truly loved had come to an end, but she also was out of a job. because he told everyone at the real estate office about the affair. And it wasn't just that, he told each staff member individually the affair which that's just soere's the HR at like what are we doing here? I to sit down and tell it What a waste of.' time tell you. Yeah Do see Tony over there? Yeah Like this is so bizarre. It's like just a way to hurt Tony too in the process Well, I think it's it's also like PR stun in the way. It's like He's trying to be the one that's like coming out ahead of it to be like before Tony can say anything. he looks like, o, I'm owning up to it You know I don't know He said, I wanted the staff to know the facts straight for me. So he his whole thing is like, well, I don't want the rumor mill to you know, spread a bunch of lies. So I felt like I need to go set the record straight before that could happen. Or before toning can Tell everyone things about me. Yeah, exactly He also strangely informed the principal of his daughter's school about the affair And his comment on that was just so he was aware. I have so many questions about that As the principal, would how would you even react to that That's such a strange thing to tell the principal. Yeah, it's so irrelevant. Or maybe it's to so that in case the kids go to somebody at the school and say something, but I don't probablybably that was his reasoning is like a selfish thing in that way that he wanted to make sure a because he's so self absorbed, they didn't want rumors to spread about him. I guess you could put it from the eyes of Maybe he was worried about the kids and what they were going through, but did they even really know about it? Do we even know No. I guess we don't even know. There's no information about the kids. I will say he did speak a ton at like school assemblies So he was a well known figure at these schools. Right, rightour point kind not about. It was basically just him saving phace. Yeah, it's just for himself Yeah. But it wasn't just Jared's marriage that was failing in twenty eleven. hisis business was too A, what do you know? terrible terrible husband and a terrible businessman. Just all around terrible because he had expanded his holdings to include larger, more prominent properties and apparently didn't know how to crunch the numbers right because when the overheads doubled He didn't have the revenue to back it up According to his business partner, Phil Broom, there were weeks when management wasn't paid. He explained it got to a point where he was robbing Peter to give to Paul. We were taking debt from the previous quarter and carrying it over And in January of twenty eleven, floods ravaged Brisbane in the area of those expensive properties that Jared had relied on for his business. Jared then turned to his former grammar school friends, Robert Chisman, Peter Cranna and Stuart Krist, and they each agreed to loan him ninety grand. gentleman's agreement. You know, just Hey man, we're going to help you out crazy Then he approached a Queensland member for a four hundred thousand dollars loan and it sounds like kind of in total His overall debt was near one million dollars. Good work, dude. And while Jared was attempting to save his business and Allison was trying to save their marriage The couple visited at least three marriage counselors, including Rosman Nutting Laurie Lumston. And Jared told both counselors that he was considering leaving Allison but stayed in counseling at Allison's request And two weeks after his final consultation with Dr. Nutting on december seventh, twenty eleven, He rekindled his affair with Tony only three months after So he goes to counseling and a couple months later Clearly learned nothing from counseling Clearly it was just going through the motions gets back together with Tony He told Tony to email him through an account using his previous swinger username, Bruce Overland. Bruce Overland I'm surprised it didn't have Lord in the front of it. Lord Rce over In multiple emails with Tony, Jared expressed his unconditional love for her and promised to leave Allison by july first, twenty twelve to be with her and her alone In one email he used the acronym. GG for Gorgeous Girl. And then this man had the audacity to sign it GM, meaning gorgeous man. The audity? The audicity. Yeah, the audity Gorgeous man. Absolutely not, sir GM Gorgeous girl, gorgeous mute Iill yuck And as Jared continue running around with Tony, Alson is still after all this trying to save their marriage, save their family, trying to reignite that spark However, these efforts seem to be in vain as Jared Qote unquote laughed at her undies and told her that she smelled. Whats very, very mean things to say. So heartbreaking that she was going through this He just doesn't care at all. No And it almost seems like he's poking to try to get her to leave Yeah. he's really trying to just like throw all the jabs So that hopefully she maybe the one to dissolves the one dissolves it, but obviously she's like trying to continue to fix it. Yeah That's that's a good ility yeah So Allison continued to seek the help of counselors telling one in twenty twelve that she feared her battle with depression was to blame for the rift in their relationship. Again, so sad that she keeps blaming herself for all of this when she has done absolutely nothing wrong And you know, it's truly just Jared's philandering ways that has got them to this point in their marriage Alison explained that her symptoms first began on a trip to South America years ago, but continued to get worse. with the births of her second and third children However, she felt like she had largely been symptom free after being prescribed Zoloft and that those feelings of anxiety and depression only returned once she learned about Jared's affair, Of course they did On april sixteenth, twenty twelve, Jared visited the third marriage counselor with Allison. and in a private moment of the session, the counselor asked Jared Who are you? And he replied by listing his professional achievements and connection to, you guessed it Great granddaddy, Robert Baden Powell If we have to hear this guy's nine hour time, I'm gonna spug He didn't speak of his personal attributes at all or his children or his marriage, none of that ust great granddaddy. The counselor spent most of the session with Jared, explaining that he needed to spend ten to fifteen minutes every other night listening to his wife's feelings The amount of time every day that you spend listening to my feelings Can you imagine if it was like we started a timer, fifteen minutes every other night Let's try that. Yeah. Josh, that sounds good to me. You set of timeer. you got ten minutes and I'm leaving Oh it's so No, you should want to listen to your wife's feelings though likeike that's it's a mutual thing She listens to my feelings, you listen to their feelings. Yeah. That's how a relationship works. That's how a marriage works. like this is basic stuff So to the fact that they're like, Jared, just please give her ten to fifteen minutes tells you that Jared wasn't listening at all. Zero minutes spent caring for his wife. Jen know, as someone with a master's in counseling, do you think it's a good piece of advice to be like to fifteen minutes every other night. Like should you shouldhould setting a timer be part of that at all for feelings?. in a situation where someone feels like the other person isn't taking the time to listen to them and they're both willing to work on it, I think that they could be a good exercise to have of like, hey, every night We're going to set aside between like right every other night, we're going to set aside you know, eight to eight, thirty or whatever, like That's something like I can count on you, you can count on me. and that's like, I think could help encourage a more open communication line between two people But I think like both parties have to be willing and wanting that U But ten to fifteen minutes I feel like that's. I guess maybe she had such low expectations for Jared that maybe she felt like that's all he could fuckking handle Yeah, maybe It's really sad Now while it's unclear if they had their first emotional discussion, they would speak on april nineteenth only hours after Jared had gotten off the phone with Tony. Now april nineteenth began as a normal day Tony was driving home and she decided to call Jared since she planned to attend a real estate conference with him the following day. And once again, the conversation seemed completely ordinary That was, of course until Jared mentioned something that he had kept hidden from Tony Allison would be attending the conference as well and the two women would finally come face to face In Tony's own words, she lost it during the phone call. and once again demanded that Jared leave Allison considering all of the promises that he had been making to her about finally getting together for real during the summer Jared reaffirmed that he would leave Allison and told her that he certainly didn't love his wife anymore And Tony responded, I'm not convinced. I know what you are doing to ensure we have a relationship Finally, she said, You have to talk to me about how things are going to change. And Jared responded, thingsings are changing. Their phone call was cut short when Jared pulled into his parents' driveway to pick up his three daughters Tony hung up without a clue about what would happen next. Now the next part of the story comes completely from Jared, so please take it with a grain of salt. But he explained that after the children went to bed He and Allison began to have one of their fifteen minute discussions for her feelings as prescribed by the councselor And Jared maintained that he did not mention the conference the following day or that Allison was going to see Tony herself. So it's interesting. he tells Tony that information but not Allison And then again, according to Jared, Allison began asking intimate details about his affair with Tony, including when and where the two of them had sex While some suggested that this conversation erupted into a fiery argument, Jared, of course, said that at some point he simply went to bed without Allison At six twenty AM the next morning, april twentieth, Jared sent this text to Allison Good morning. Hope you slept well Where are you? None of the girls are up yet. Lve G. I wonder if any of his other messages in the past were signed Lve G. I think you know, it seems like his, I don't know if he would have included the love, but he definitely did the old man sign off with many of his text messages and other electronic communications. Okay. So old man sign off. you mean like Love dad. Yeah, like saying your name at the end R. Like this is a letter or something right. My mom always does that But yeah, I feel like that's very performative in this specific situation as you'll see why to write love G So then ten minutes later he sent this, ow getting concerned. whereere are you? The app doesn't say either. I'm assuming it's some type of tracking app that they had. Daughter' now up I'm dressed and about to make lunches. Please just text me back or call, loveo G Then at seven fifteen AM, Jared called Triple zero, which is Australia's emergency line And let's listen. happening there I don't want to be alarmed, I'll trige the one and thir three one number, but on forever. Yeah, My lifeife is in time I don't know where she is. Okay. When did you last say your first? last night when we went to b. And I got up morning and she wasn't there and that's not unusual. He doesn't want to sorry suspicious that he's like freaking out. Right. Yeah he's trying to stay stay calm and seem like he has no idea what's going on All right, Josh, we have a big choice to make today and that is what to make for dinner. And like as you heard, Jared explained the Alis and sometimes liked to take walks on her own and assume that she had done so either the night before after he'd gone as sleep or early in the morning before he woke up. However, he grew concerned when sheanna returned home by the time that he finished shaving So after this call police officer comes to the house and notices a suspicious detail when he's greeted by Jared Not only had he shaved his beard, but there were two massive scratch marks on his cheek And while Jared said that they were just shaving cuts, the officer knew better and immediately recognized the wounds as defensive scratches. Okay. as take a look. Yeah. as guys Anon Josh shave or have shaved. Those are big scratches or cuts for a razor. You would have to start Cutting and then keep going Yeah.ose are massive. Pull it down, rightight. Yeah Like even when you shave your legs, that doesnn't happen. Although that didn't happen to me one time. I was gonna say, I've had plenty of on my ankle. The ankles, the knees sometimes are tricky. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but a face ye Especially two cuts right next to each other like that That just That's what's weird to me Its usually when you cut yourself once and then you're more careful after that. But to cut yourself twice I mean, unless he's He's shaving with a serrated blade or something. Yeah. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. No, but what does it look like fingernail with which is why the officer was like Yeah, it looks Looks like somebody may have scratched you there. doesn't look like a shaving accident there which obviously, he, you know, if this was some type of altercation, you know, he had his beard and he was bleeding and so he wanted to try to see if you know, cover it up. I don't know why he why he shaved necessarily, but maybe he was concerned that it looked more suspicious as with blood in his beard potentially in the hair. so he shaved and then tried to make up the story that, oh, I cut it shaving with my razor. That's what I'm thinking is he got the cuts and then was like, how would I explain this? Let me shave my beard off and then. But even with like a straight edge razor, I mean as Ian said, you'd have to like slicing down. Like you you nick yourself on your face, you're going to stop immediately. You're not going to be like going and then do it again.d. Yeah. And what's crazy is it's not the most absurd injury that Jared tries to explain as you'll see But officers also noticed something else as they arrived at Jared's house. It had been cleaned thoroughly before anyone had arrived at the scene, so much so that it stuck out to law enforcement And the authorities immediately declared the house a crime scene, though they didn't name Jared a suspect or a person of interest yet eightighty officers searched the area in and around the home while Jared was first questioned And while he wasn't agitated, Jared was certainly difficult to get answers out of Even though investators didn't think his story rang true, he stuck to it, maintaining that he simply went to bed, and when he woke up the next morning, his wife was gone which is like It's it's a very strange story. As simple as it is, it's like it's She just went for a walk and then just didn't come home like So he's kind of it's almost like he's setting up, well, maybe she left and then was abducted or something, you know, he's trying to lead them down a different path by You know, this whole story of I just went to bed and then, oh, magically she was gone in the morning But other injuries were noticed on Jared, including a cut to one of his hands. He tried to convince everyone that he was simply unlucky that maybe when he shaved his face and slipped the razor all the way down to his hand He had cut his hand while changing a light bulb. Which come on, dude What you do? squeeze the light bulb so hard that it broke? Just immediately goes back to how many people does it changed to change a light bulb. I don't think I've ever cut my hand changing a light bulb. What the hell E Okay, but this one, this one takes the cake. And if I was a police officer and this guy was first tells me that he Cut his hand changing a light bulb And then we discover He has all these red marks and scratches on his chest. And the guy says, I was attacked by a caterpillar Yes, a caterpillar Sorry, that is which is the imp That is has to be the most bizarre thing I've ever heard a killer say in a case ever to explain an injury. A fucking caterpillar bro I know Australia has a lot of dangerous animals. So why why don't you pick one? Yeahight. Like there's so many other options. There's massive spiders,'s There's snakes, there's all sorts of creatures, but a caterpillar That's one vicious caterpillar. What was a caterpillar in your bathroom? Like what are we doing here? Aacked. Yeah, attacked Just like, is there jumping caterpillars in like fucking fangs? Yeah lookook at the injuries too. L does that look like it's from a caterpillar? Come on. That is wild. Yeah. And of course, there's no caterpillars that are known to bite in this area. Yeah, not for real, not a single caterpillar in that area. Let alone one that's going to go absolutely crazy on you once it makes contact with the skin. Like, what did it just go on him? and he's like, Ah, the caterpillar. G it off of me. And he's like How do I get it off of me? And this thing's like ravaging him What the hell Come on, dude. how big of a caterpillar? What' you fall into Wonderland? What is this? This makes no sense. Ituch an idiot Officers also notice other strange behavior from Jared, specifically in his online activity because you know what P do not hide their internet history very well and it can be recovered As he searched the family's internet history hoping to find some clues about Allison's whereabouts, They stumbled upon some Google searches from Jared, including self incrimination and right to silence In the hours before police arrived on the scene. Nice He also engaged in some other suspicious activities Although he stated to the police that he had no idea what had happened, Alison, he began speaking to a criminal defense lawyer within hours of first reporting Alice's disappearance, which you know, sometimes, you know, people just lawyer up in these types of circumstances and don't actually have anything to do with ye, the disappearentance. But when you couple it all together, including the Physical contact wounds he has to his body I think it was very clear to law enforcement that, you know, they were on the right track here. And when Alson's friends got the call that she was missing, they immedately felt that Jared had something to do with it. They felt like he was capable and knew that Alison would never do anything that would separate her from her girls. So they werere like There's no way Allison would just up and leave and not come back to the house and just leave children with Jared. I mean, Jared could barely handle a weekend with them. So why on earth would she just abruptly leave so that her daughters are getting up the next morning wondering where momom is. made no sense to Allison's friends Tony said that Jared called her the day Allison went missing and told her they should lie low for a while Tony said that she didn't think Jared was involved in any way and that she was devastated to learn that Allison was missing. Meanwhile, as a community galvanized to mount one of the most thorough searches in Queensland's history, Jared took his children to his parents' home to stay out the public eye while forensic work was underway at his home. And for one, they did not find any evidence of blood on Jared's shaving razor, basically just proving that he had received the marks on his face while shaving his beard However, investigors did find blood in Allison's car described as contact smear with drips to the floor of the body of the vehicle. They also located a strand of hair, and both the blood and hair samples were determined to have been Allison's. And while investigators remained hopeful that somehow they could maybe find Allison alive Jared was definitely entering damage control mode at this point. He called Tony constantly despite previously telling her that they needed to lay low And he used a pay phone, of course and asked her if she was cooperating with the police. And once he even called her while she was in the middle of an interview with law enforcement, and he asked her if she had told the police, that they were still seeing one another. and Tony responded that Yeah, I did because it's the truth and That wasn't good for Jared. He was not happy about that because he told the police that they weren't seeing one another He had told them that while they once had an affair, everything in their marriage was fine now Fine Investigators felt that Tony had absolutely nothing to do with Allison's disappearance, even though Jared suggested that from early on. Yes, he tried to throw Tony under the bus He suggested that perhaps his jealous mistress had done something to the wife as he was trying to save their relationship. Of course, all of this is lies Even though Jared was the clear person of interest in the disappearance As the days piled up, investigators began to suspect that something had been done to Allison, but without a body investigators felt like they couldn't charge Jaret, no matter how much suspicious activity that he had displayed since reporting his wife missing. And then on april thirtieth ten days since Jared reported Allison missing to the police. Her body was discovered by a kayaker on the banks of Kolo Creek, nearly fourteen kilometers from her house about eight and a half miles. and only three hundred meters from a scout campsite. Inspector Mark Sharkkey, who had to inform Allison's parents said that it was The hardest call I ever made And when asked why it was so difficult, he explained she was everybody's daughter, sister, and mother. And I just got to say shout out to Inspector Mark Sharkkey. He literally made me cry in his interviews. to see such passion from law enforcement is pretty rare and he truly seem to be deeply emotionally affected by Allison's murder Even though investigators were certain that this was Allison, they did have to wait, of course, for identification through her dental records due to a high level of decomposition that her body was discovered in However, that did not stop Jared. E though he publicly expressed that he was just stricken with grief Privately, he contacted Astron Life Insurance to inquire about claiming her three hundred forty seven thousand two hundred and eighty seven dollars life insurance policy before she was conclusively identified. And this wasn't Allison's only insurance policy all told the money would total to around one million dollars, which would settle all of Jared's debts that we calculated earlier had reached just about a million However, despite all signs pointing to Jared's involvement in his wife's death The investigation did hit a snag Due to the decomposition level of Allison's body, the medical examiner was unable to determine a cause of death. However, investigators kept pointing to those scratch marks on Jared's face saying Those marks tell the real story. a story of Allison fighting for her life as Jared smothered her, which is just horrific to picture what the final moments of her life was like trying to scratch her husband's face, who she should have been loved by and able to trust and It's just horrendous to think about. and her friends They say that they were proud of Allison for fighting to the end because That's not her. She is gentle and soft and beautiful and ultimately they were grateful for those scratch marks that she left on his face because without them, they fear that investigators may not have suspected Jared And while investigators felt like the case against Jared was strong, of course, it was circumstantial They needed hard evidence to put Jared at fault and the murder having taken place at the house before her body was dumped at Kolo Creek. And that's where botanist came in. this is really interesting And that's because when investigators located Allison's body, they also noticed that there were leaves knotted throughout her hair. And they sent these leaves to be examined by one of Australia's premier botanists who identified them as belonging to six different plant types. And only two of these species could be found at Kolo Creek, but all six of them were identified in the backyard of Jared and Allison's home, which tells you so much becausecause now the police are able to put together what actually happened After killing her, investigators theorizeed that Jared dragged Allison across the back patio before lifting her into the car. And the botanist was even able to match the exact botanical material to Lees found on their porch And for investigators, this was The icing on the cake Two months after Allison's body was discovered, Jared Baden Clay was arrested for murder on june thirteenth twenty twelve ood on these investigators for being thorough. Yeah and you know even thinking to do this. Yeah and look at leaves in the hair and have somebody come in and and actually find out They are, where they from and match them up with plants at his property. Have you ever covered a case where a botanist was involved? Becauseuse I don't think I have No. No, I don't think so. But unfortunately, his application was denied only a few days later on june twenty second because justice David Botis said he posed a significant flight risk. We all know Jared probably would have tried to Flee. Oh yeah. the coward that he is Over two years would pass before his case went to trial, which began on june tenth, twenty fourteen And this entire time, Jared maintained his innocence And his case rested on a few key details. For one, they focused on the fact that Allison's cause of death could not be determined in the autopsy. due to the level of decomposition. They stated that this alone created enough reasonable doubt regarding Jared's involvement in her death Plus, there were the children. Without anyone to watch the house at night, Jared would have never left them alone to dispose of his wife's body eight miles away This also worked in their favor by denying that the murder was premeditated, something the prosecution stated was the case because of Jared's financial issues and suspicious interternet activity prorosecution, on the other hand, their main evidence was Allison's diary entries, which we have read throughout the episode And while Jared had stated that they worked through their issues and were quote unquote fine att the time of her death Allson's journal painted a very different picture one of marital discord that stretched back for years and years. And the prosecution' star witness was of course, Tony Mcugh, who detailed the affair with Jared and gave testimony regarding the phone call stating that she had put pressure on Jared to reveal the nature of their affair to Allison Before the event they were all planning to attend the next day. Of course, Tony had no idea this pressure would lead to Allison's death And in a big fumble for the defense, they let this dumbo this stand. Not only did his words ultimately amount to everything I said before about this marriage was a lie, but now I'm telling the truth. He also further stated that Tony may have been involved in Allison's death even though there's absolutely zero evidence to suggest that. In fact, Jared's testimony was so bad that there's an entire legal services article titled Bade and Clay in the perils of giving evidence in murder trials And on july fifteenth little over a month since the beginning of the trial Jared Baden Clay was found guilty of murdering Allison And while a separate charge of interfering with a corpse was dropped, he was given a life sentence with a non parole period of fifteen years Now this wouldn't be the end of Jared's legal drama, only a month later on august seventh, twenty fifteen Jared appealed his conviction He used a reasonable hypothesis, which was a confrontation between him and Allison that led to her accidental death And as a result, his charge was downgraded to manslaughter after the Court of Appeals made its decision in december twenty fifteen However, this decision did not go over well with Allison's family, friends, and the public Over four thousand people protested the decision the day it was announced and the prosecution began its own appeal against the downgrade to manslaughter They stated that nowhere, especially in Jared's testimy did the defense ever mention this hypothesis And the decision to introduce it after his conviction was simply a way for him to avoid accountability And because they fought back, on august thirty first, twenty sixteen, the appeal was successful and his murder conviction was restored. In the years since Allison's father was appointed the executor of her estate And it was ruled that Jared would not be entitled to any benefits from her death Tony, however, she left Australia and began teaching in the United Arab Emirates under the name Bridget Jones. She did give an interview to sixixty Minutes, Australia in which she defended her own involvement while still offering support to Allison She said, What this has done to my life is insignificant Allison Far more tragically, the children have lost both their mother and their father Allison's friends have taken up the torch, doing really all they can to share Allison's memories with her children They said her daughters got her for such a small amount of time. I mean, it's truly devastating. They said they were lucky though They were never able to doubt that their mother loved them On july thirty first, twenty fifteen, Allison's sister, Vanessa Fowler, along with her parents, established the Allison Baden Clay Foundation. It aims to build a national community that acknowledges the prevalence of domestic and family violence and seeks to create an Australia that is committed to eliminating these issues So if anyone out there that's associated with the Alison Bad and Clay Foundation is listening, we would love, we really urge you to apply for an empower grant through our foundoundation Hireer Hope We would love to connect with you guys. We would love to work with you and support the work that you guys are doing. We really commend what the Foundation has already achieved. It's really remarkable And in addition to the foundation, an annual scholarship in Allison's memory was also created to sponsor aspiring ballet dancers This scholarship was announced by Queensland Premier Anastashia Paolishe, who had known Allison as a child. Allison's close friend, Carrie Annne Walker, said this of her dear friend. Allison was a kind hearted, generous woman, a loving wife and devoted mother whose legacy will continue if we all remember that life is precious and take the time to be kind smmile at those who pass you by. and live for today We, her family and friends, didn't get a chance to say goodbye But Allison will always remain forever in our hearts. I thought that was such a beautiful statement. and very true words to live by that we could all use the reminder of on a daily basis I hope Jared is having a horrible time in prison. I do too Like I'm sure his u Family lineage doesn't go very far in prison. Try telling that to someone who's about to beat your ass in prison. Excuse me, I'm Lord Baiting Clay. My great grandfather was a colonizer. Yeah, he's. He ultimately got what he deserved. Thank God that they upheld the murder conviction. canan believe they almost downgraded him to manslaughter because that's the whole thing is he's fifteen years in And then he's up for parole because their life sentences work there So he'll serve those fifteen years and then he could potentially parole though Hopefully not. Yeah, let's hope. Hopefully he stays in there. You never know though, someome of the most shocking cases end up with parole Yeah, that's very true. I hope for Alison's loved ones that that's not the case. It just is so sad thinking about how the final years of her life were and how tortured she was mentally and how just it really breaks my heart how much she was blaming herself when she did nothing wrong, she was such a wonderful person, wonderful mother and Devastating And there's just so many women doing all the right things too to fix their marriage and work on it and it's just He had every opportunity if he truly wanted to 'a here's the thing is like It was more getting that money to because he knew that if I divorce her I, you know, what what will that agreement look like R. And it's a long process. you know, I was researching earlier, it's like twelve to eighteen months. got to go through the court system and Obviously that all the financials come out into it and his he's a horrible businessman. he's all this debt. I'm sure he's done a bunch of other shit we don't even know about. Yeah, and it's it's it I think it became more about the money for him as opposed to just not being with Allison anymore, because he could have divorced Allison at any point in time, but Ultimately he was after the life insurance money. he's he was trying to figure out a way that he could settle his debts and then move on what's life with Tony And unfortunately, and again, there could be other things that that happened. There could have been a fiery argument that broke out. I mean, there could have been other things that were at play here behind his motivations for killing her. I don't think it was a plann for a while though I don't think it was a heat at the moment thing. Yeah, I agree. I think it was a premeditated plan potentially. I mean because it just doesn't it seems like she already knew about the affair. So why would he you know, why would he have all of a sudden done that all at once, you know, the night before they're supposed to go to this this seminar all togetherher when they already knew each other's existence, Tony and Allison. So it seems like maybe this was just He felt like this was the right moment to do it. I don't know. It' I agree with you. I think it was financially motivated. And it doesn't get much more evil than no. smmothering the mother of your three beautiful children. Wh' money. Seping kids are feet away in other rooms. It's and I mean and that's the The other thing too is like I feel absolutely horrible for their children. I know because that is the worst thing to have to try to pieces back together and move on and wrap your head around it You know, you lose your mom to
