They just they just go by I've lost track Years go by, baby. Yeah, I think mile higher is about to hit four hundred and lightights out's about to hit three hundred. That's crazy. I don't know how many I do for te. Yeah I mean I think you're almost like in the six hundreds something right. I don't think we count them No, certainly don't count it Anyway Our old asses are here we're still going still going strong. And we are joined by our lovely production team. Today, we have Tom in the house. Y Our amazing Mile Hire editor who is part of the production team. Yes. And also Ian, of course. Hello, hello, goodood to be here. I'm trying to more energy. Yeah, donon't let Ian's on camera demeanor fool you. This guy is filled with energy He is Thank you everyone. He practically bounces around just like his do. He does Y. And then of course I'm joined by my co host, my husband, Josh Hello, hello. and Janelle is not here, obviously She's on the beach, drinking beers, right? Yeah She's having some much needed time off. very jealous. Me too beautiful where she is, but Today we have a very, very important case that we're to be discussing. One that's kind of been on the radar for a long time, especially for you, Kendall. had almost covered it on your channel, which was surprising you didn't end up covering it. Yeah, I had looked into it a long time ago back when I was a one woman show doing everything for my channel and freaked me out. I think it happened around the time that something tragic happened in my life and so I was like in a bad heads space and It just really scared me for some reason and every time I had gone back to it, the idea of you know, the old feelings would come up and I would feel scared. But I've always been really interested in this case and I've followed it just personally over the years Um and I'm so relieved that justice seems to be right on the horizon. This case is going to court in September. And we will be doing a follow up episode because there's a lot that we should be finding out after this case goes to trial. Yeah, there's been a lot of unanswered questions for years and I think, you know you know, with the murder of Fiths Hedgepeth who She was brutally murdered in twenty twelve and it seems like based on the investigation a multitude of different evidence that was recovered at the scene and for some reason this case Over a decade Unsolved. Nobody rested and really seemed like the authorities were kind of at a loss as to Who could have done this to her? And it was only, you know, in the last what, five years or so that somebody finally was arrested thanks to, you know, genealogy and DNA technology But it's honestly a little shocking to me that it took overver ten years to make an arrest in this case when there was so much DNA evidence present at the scene U it's it's kind of baffling. And then what's even more baffling is person who was arrested for her murder We have no idea what his connection is, what his motive is. I mean, there's so many unanswered questions and questions around the scene itself. And it's really important that we go through all of the initial suspects, even though there is someone under arrest now and and you know, facing charges. Because we still don't know. you know, this person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, although the evidence is very strong Um, but it It's important to get a full grasp on what happened here, all the different people involved, how There were many different suspects over the years and Yeah, there's just There are so many unanswered questions that it definitely leaves you a little bit frustrated Kning that we're probably going to get these answers soon and that justice will finally come for this family Hopefully Yeah I feel pretty confident about it, but of course I'm not. I mean, who knows? I think crazier things have happened in trials before. I think based on the evidence that they have against this suspect that There's a very strong chance I think they'll get a conviction But I mean, you never know. And I think one of the lingering questions that a lot of people want to know with this case is How did this perpetrator know her, but also Was someone else involved or did somebody else No, right about what happened. And it's possible. It is possible because the whole night Prior to face murder is filled with, you know, lots of different people sort of coming in and out of the timeline and and definitely As well as a very odd voicemail. There's a very odd note left at the crime scene. I mean, there's so many weird elements to this that you know, there seems to be sort of a concrete Uh, you know sort of idea of what happened, but there's also all these other sort of loose ends that we don't really know if they have a connection to the crime or not Yeah, and there really have been such there has been such a lack of answers because the police have been so tight lipped about E since this arrest was made. So I know there are so many people out there just waiting for this case to go to trial to finally figure out The hell happened here becausecause face murder was absolutely brutal and just devastating Part of the reason we were discussing it earlier, the reason it freaked me out so much too was that she was about our age. She was born the same year as Josh in nineteen ninety two. And she was born A week later. Yes. I mean, I mean, ye, it's I think that was part of it too just around that time period. I mean, we were also in college and also, you know in the early days. and so It's those types of cases where you, you connect with a victim on sort of that more personal level that it definitely can hit home harder. R. And it's like this happened in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at University of North Carolina, major university. And I think whenever a brutal murder like this happens a on a university campus anywhere especially where the communities are so tight and the circles are so tight that it's always extremely shocking and you know, everybody's kind of left in and and sort of you know the state of Why? Why did this happen? And that's the big question mark right now is why, what really led to this happening in the first place? And who is this person and what is their connection? I think that's always been the question too is why would anyone w to hurt faith? She just seemed like the coolest person, someone I would absolutely wna be friends with She's just 's so awesome in so many ways and we'll go over all of that, but God, what a massive loss. So I guess we should start by going over Faith's background. Yeah, I did want to make one quick little announcement though. Okay. I am wearing a shirt from our new merch collection, which as a reminder, everything on malhamers. com, anything you purchase All of those proceeds are going straight to the Hire Hope Foundation, which supports families and organizations of victims of violent crime We've done a lot of really great work with the foundoundation. Again, all proceeds from merch go straight to the foundoundation to support victims families and organizations involved with a violent crime But let's go ahead and get into the episode So Faith Danielle Hedgepeth was born to her parents, Roland and Connie onn september twenty sixth nineteen ninety two. And she was primarily raised along her two older siblings, Rolanda and Chadwick And also her younger brother, Caleb as well. in the tiny community of Hollister, North Carolina, which I had never even heard of As of twenty twenty, Hollister only had a population of around six hundred and eighteen people. So yeah, real small And according to her family, Faith was a lovely young woman both inside and out with a heart of gold. She befriended everyone she met. beautifuly infectious smile illuminated a room and touched every soul there within. And when you see pictures of her, that statement just really rings true Yeah, she almost radiates off, you know, the photos and and You know, everybody that speaks about her is just like she was the nicest person, you know, this infectious smile and reallyally a positive light and energy in, you know, everybody's lives that she encountered which just makes us that much more devastating. But yeah, she really seemed to be assaaled earth type of person, you know? Yeah. and in like the some of the best years of your life too. Yeah I know just getting started with her life So her parents divorced within a year of her birth and her mom named her faith actually because she believed that's exactly what their family needed, which I thought was really beautiful. And it's still important to note that faith was cared for by both of her parents throughout her life though she was mainly raised by her mother and also her older sister Faith was a member of the Hullawap Pony Native American tribe Pollister and the surrounding Warren County are part of the tribe's traditional lands And faith was incredibly active in tribal events. Her family said that she was proud to be Indian Throughout her young life, Faith continuously strived for excellence She was a member of the National Honor Society, Project Sed at Duke University, Project Upplift, the Native American Student Association, and the Youth Summit Committee , very act And she was also involved in her family's church as well and was a beloved cheerleader. I don't know how she made time to do all of this and have a thriving social life, it seemed. But all the while, her dream was to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, of course, just an hour from where she grew up. and of course, UNC was made famous by star protege Michael Jordan and also its basketball program but it has long been regarded as one of the top schools in the country And as a Gates millennium scholar, Faith was able to attend on a full ride scholarship She was just so impressive She initially chose biology as her major and she had dreamed of becoming a pediatrician to then return to her hometown of Hollister and improve her community Fith also hoped to be the first person in her family to graduate from college. whichich that is a major accomplishment in itself, I mean, to be You know, the first in your family to go to college and then to graduate is something truly special. And in the fall of twenty ten, Faith moved eighty miles away from her hometown to Chapel Hill where she immediately made friends with almost everybody she spoke to Yuna Chavis, onene of Fe's first friends, explained that they first met when they walked into the same classroom. and Yuna said that Fae's happy, smiling face calmed my nerves. And f's closest friend was a young woman named Carina Rosario whom Faith had met in her freshman year as well And the two were described as instant friends. and Fae's father said that she was kind of like her sister Youuna said if I saw one, I saw the other. So really kindind of inseparable from the very start The two had very different personalities that really complemented one another very well. While faith was outgoing and bubbly Karina was more reserved and faith often be the one to sort of break the ice in social groups and encounters. But Face Family also got very close to Karina who described her at one point as a very nice young lady After all, this was college and both Faith and Krina spent time getting to know boys at UNC, which is Very normal thing to do. And we know that Karina got involved with a few young men One of the first was her ex boyfriend, aspiring rapper Toy Jones. and face unromantic life was rather complicated during this time She had a high school sweetheart named Alex And while the two had broke up, one faith left for college going over to Chapel Hill, they reportedly still saw one another Whenever she returned home to Hllstter and they were occasionally intimate But she also got involved with an older student named Tyi McNeil whom she had met on her first day at school Ti said that he was attracted to face vibrant personality and said that he had fallen in love with her He continued I was crazy about faith from the day I met her However, the couple remained rather casual because of Fe's ongoing communication with her ex, Alex. And Ty eventually said that this is why they ended things Ununa did express that Tie was posossessive over faith. But regardless, faith and Tie would see each other from time to time And it sounds like they remained intimate but While Faith did hit the books and take her academic life very seriously, she was known for frequenting as many do in college is the vibrant social scene in and around Chapel Hill Kenel and I have only been to Chapel Hill one time on a road trip back from North Carolina. We drove the way back to Colorado And we stopped in Chapel Hill, very, very beautiful area of North Carolina. I was obsessed with North Carolina for a period of time. Oh, yeah. we didn't even We wanted moving bad.. That was totally our plan for a while. We wanted to move to Charlotte If I live somewhere on the east Coast, I would go to North Carolina For sure. I really enjoyed my time there. but anyways According to her family, face grades occasionally suffered. It was mainly at the beginning of her college career, but she maintained her priorities She actually worked two jobs, most notably one at the local Red Robin After one customer drew a heart on their receipt, Faith posted it to Instagram with the caption I make my guests fall in love with me But after two full years of school, took a brief hiatus during the spring twenty twelve semester plan was to return that fall to continue school which would have made her a third year sophomore. During this time, Faith moved in with Karina at her second floor one bedroom apartment in the Hawthorne on the view complex in Durham County, which is just outside of Chapel Hill And while this would only be a temporary arrangement until her financial aid was dispersed At point, once she had that financial aid, she was planning on moving to another off campus apartment This time at the Hawthorne on the View was where things started to get more complicated. In the summer of twenty twelve, Karina's relationship with Eric had turned extremely toxic And it's important to note that Eric also stayed in the apartment with her and Faith. And according to friends, Eric became veryer possessive over Karina. He would be always texting her and also texting her friends if she didn't respond red flags And he would also go to the apartment to search for her if he didn't know where she was. Which it sounds almost like borderline stalking a little bit. Yeah. I mean to just invite yourself over to somebody's place just because you're not getting response from them is very weird. Yeah, it's extremely possessive. So on Faith's urging, Karina broke up with Eric and changed the locks. However, he broke into their apartment twice after the breakup In one instance, he even took Karina's phone and shoved her to the floor. This is what I mean by like borderline stalking and harassment at her at least. I mean, it's definitely abusive But at this point, Faith despised Eric, as you can imagine. and she convinced Karina to file a restraining order against him on july eleventh and even drove her down to the courthouse. So she was a big part of that However, Eric, of course, remained close by He moved into a separate unit in the same complex, and during a phone call with Karina, he even threatened to kill Faith if they didn't get back together. On september sixth, twenty twelve, Eric posted a very disturbing message to Facebook, stating Dear Lord, forgive me for my sins and the sins I may commit today. Protect me from the girls who don't deserve me and the ones who wish me dead today bizarre on so many levels to post this to Facebook. I think it's more bizarre considering his past and the the actions that he's taken. because I think If you didn't know this person, you'd be like, okay In this context, based on what we know about Eric, we're like, forgive me for the sins I have committed the ones I haven't like that Yeah it could be seen as very generic. just be like, I curse today. you know, like depending on who you ask, like sins could be a lot of things. But the really weird part is protect me from the girls who don't deserve me and the ones who wish me dead today True. What the hell is that In one context, yes, that could be, but in another context you could just be like, I'm a player. so I guess protect me, you know. Stupid. Yeah, I kind of think it's it's because of what ends up happening that this becomes a disturbing message. but On its face, he just is a cornball. I think that's That's one I unfortunately know at least one person who talks like this on social media. Really? As a result of failed relationships It's not a friend just. Did they make it like religious? Yeah Any excuse they can find to wrap some philosophical statement back to the way that they failed their own relationships? Yeah. But word in a very similar way, you know, like protect me from the evil of women. Oh my God. This is why I'm trying to em emas this is not a friend. Not a friend. Somebody Oh, well, we all have those people. like old connections and acquaintances where it's like You're still friends with them on social media. It's almost like you can't look away ' they's such a train wreck that you don't want to unfollow because sometimes it's just funny to see it. I reach out to every single time when he posts something like that. It is a guy chaler I always fly back with like something where I'm like, are you okay? Like do you need to talk kind of thing I get left on read every single time, but, you knowm yeah, because they're not looking for that. They just want the attention. Yeah, yeah, yeah It's nice of you though to reach out 're such a good guide, Thom But anyway, he also called another friend after he had made these social media posts, expressing this need again for forgiveness for future actions. U Now incorrect sources state that this was posted to Twitter, but it was almost certainly posted to Facebook And on top of the Eric situation, Euna said that Faith had asked to move in with her. And while she didn't get into specifics, Euna said that there was definitely tension between the two roommates and that the living situation was just no longer working out for faith. and it seemed like she was Um, Ururgent u need to get out of there. You know, it was becoming very uncomfortable for some reason On Sunday, september second, twenty twelve, Faith's family was throwing her mother, Connie, an early birthday party, and Faith finished her shift at the Red Robin Karrina and then drove to Hollister to celebrate Connie said, we were just hanging out enjoying time with a family On Tuesday, which was Connie's actual birthday, Faith called me Wished me a happy birthday and that was it. That was the last time I spoke to my baby girl Then on Wednesday, september fifth, Faith had texted her father, telling him about her plans to join Alpha Pi Omega, which is a Native American sorority that Faith had wanted to join ever since she started attending UNC However, faith sense that something was wrong Rowan said it always just felt like she knew the right time to text. She sensed it. She asked, Dad, what's wrong? And I told her what was going on and she told me to just have faith. Always thinking of other people. She always made me feel like I was the most special person in the world And for faith, the evening of september sixth began with her attending a sorority rush event for Alpha Pi O Mega. And at seven fifteen Faith left the event because she said she had to work on a paper that she was writing detailing the history of her tribe. And she and Krina had planned to meet up and the two went to the Davis liibrary on campus around eight PM to study and work together During this time between eight thirty and nine, Faith texted her father about the sorority and her hopes of joining Faith then left Karina at the library but returned around eleven thirty and then the two went back to their apartment together Then the girls got ready because they were going to be hitting the town that night It was Thursday after all, you know, it's always called Thursday Thursday in college. Visitash d. app slash legal slash podcast for full disclosures But it was college night at Chapel Hill and the two girls had their eyes set on the Thrill Nightclub get you Yeah and College towns's always that nightclub. You're like h I went to questestionable. I went to UNC as well, but not the good UNC. I went to the University of Northern Colorado, Cow toown, baby and the clubs up there. were so scary They were sketchy. I don't know if they're so like that. I remember going to one One time because I never, I mean I lived a different life in college, but I was a busym. but I did go out one night and I was like, what on earth is this place Was it the like The Stampede? Yeah. or no, that's the music thing. like boot thing, I think It was like box. Oh yeah, the box was the box They were all b. All of them were like teeny t. Remember Sky, it was like a Oh, it was Sky. Yeah. Yeah.. That was like an Italian restaurant that would turn into a club after it's really wild, But it's always interesting because you've got sort of this combo of College students, you know, some of the locals go there. And you know, by default, you know, there's beautiful college women there and stuff, you're going have the creepers there as well. And I remember there was a lot of creepers. Oh yeah. It was fright. My eyes were like scanning bar the entire time because there's just sketch balls everywhere Oh, so many really scary things happen to a ton of girls I knew up there. Yeah, it's it's You know, it's you got to be be definitely, you know, careful in those types of environments because you just never know who you're going to come in contact with And in Chapel Hill, this club was called, you know, was thrill and it kind of had this sort of you know, seedy reputations, kind of infamous for, you know, the types of people that that went there. And so that was the club that they were headed over to. And it's one of those clubs that apparently doesn't like to follow the laws. and so they were kind of known for serving students underage, which is a big no no and surrising that Clubs and bars and college towns even get away with this. You think the cops be all over this. Well, it has closed down since True. Yeah, true. But even then, I mean It should never happen and it does anyway. Yeah, I'm sure it still does. And usually it's like somebody knows the bartender and then the bartenders, you know give it. But it's it's a big no no because, you know, when you're nineteen shouldn't be drinking under aage at the bar. twenty minutes away. That's longer than that bro. It It's like an hour. It's an hour yeah But Fort Collins is like twenty minutes away. We couldn't afford an Uber to Denver. Wherere we supposed to drive? A you encouraging bad behavior Yeah, it's it's up there. Yeahah, at least an hour. I'd say it's like just from Brighton to Denver's twenty minutes. So at another like forty minutes north of Brighton And it's nothingness up there. Me and my friends would go to Denver, but we'd have to like stay the night down there or stay at someone's house or something. But yeah normally it was just Cowtown was our only option. But anyways, since Faith and Karina were nineteen at the time, the thrill was a place that they knew they could get a few drinks at. And around twelve thirty AM on september seventh, the girls left the apartment for the thrill and they arrived about ten minutes later at approximately twelve forty Now while there have been no names officially released of those who are at the nightclub, it's very it's very key details. That's a big question we have is who was with them at the nightclub and who attended The nightclub that night its city reputation was well earned because at the thrill it was reported that the girls mingled with a Alleged crack dealer, an unstable student who later threatened to shoot his mom's boyfriend unnamed suspicious guy And this comes from reporting around this case. But another interesting fact is that at around one twenty three AM Faith called and left Yuna a voicemail. And while Yuna was asleep, when she listened to it the next morning, it sounded like music playing in the background with fabric rubbing against the phone some muffled voices being captured in the message as well And Faith was a known pocket dialer And Una initially deleted the voicemail without even a second thought even though this would prove later on to be very important. After about ninety minutes, Krina told Faith she wasn't feeling well and was having some stomach issues. At around two hundred seven AM, the two girls are seen leaving the nightclub on CCTV footage There also appears to be a man with them whom investigators later described as sketchy. so donon't know who this man is and I hope that when the trial comes around, we will find out who this person was. Maybe they weren't ever able to identify him, but it'd be interesting to see who this guy was But once they walked out in the nightclub, it sounds like this guy didn't go any further. That was kind of the extent of At least the video footage they had of this quote unquote sketchy individual. But then the two girls immediately headed back to Hawthorne on the View apartment complex. And once they arrived home, Carina got extremely sick and went to the bathroom to throw up. Face stayed with her for a moment, got her trash can and then went to her bedroom And it was around this time that their downstairs neighbor was up late watching television, reported hearing thumping sounds from the girl's unit And this neighbor described the sounds as sort of like furniture being moved or a bag being picked up and then dropped, but like heavy enough that's like Something heavy is hitting the ground. She did find it strange that she was hearing these noises early in the morning, but again you're you're kind of unsure. it's it's enough to get your attention, but you're like Your mind isn't necessarily thinking like something nefarious is happening up there And then after sort of those thumps happen They didn't hear anything else for the remainder. of the night While in her bedroom, Faith went on her Facebook page and then texted to different men The first was a man named Brandon Edwards, and he had been seeing Karina in a casual relationship since her breakup with Eric And faith texted him at around three forty AM saying Heyy, can you come over? Krina needs you more than you know. Please show her you care Brandon didn then't text back though until twelve hours later, saying who is this which indicates that he probablyrobably didn't have her phone number stored in his phone. So, you know, he's just receiving this sort of random text from a random number It's important to note, though, that while she was in the bathroom, Krina also attempted to call Brandon, but he did not pick up But at around three forty three AM, theyith texted Ty McNeil And while the two had tried to break things off in the past, they did still see each other from time to time, and it sounds like they had been intimate the prior week But Faith had texted saying that she was still in love with him and wanted to get back together And when Ty read the message the following morning, he found it strange that she was speaking so emotionally, even though they hadn't been talking that much Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Carina was still reaching out to others. After she couldn't get a hold of Brandon, she texted Jordan McCrary who had become somewhat of a star soccer player at UNC And he and Karina had also been involved in sort of this casual relationship And he happened to still be awake After texting back and forth for a while, Jordan arrived at the apartment and picked up Karina at around four twenty five AM And it's important To note that Karina considered their apartment complex quite safe And she knew that Faith was asleep in her bedroom didn't lock the door to their unit, which is kind of strange that you wouldn't lock the door I mean, I guess if you think you're complex is Safe That's great, but it is a bit strange to me she did not lock the door on her way out. And maybe that's because of she's feeling ill, you know, some impairment there. I don't know, but I do find that a little strange that she'd leave her roommate sleeping in her bedroom. without having her Apartment secured, likeike that's just b Definitely is weird But of course, you impairment thing, I think would be the best explanation for it. if you you know, don't look at it in nefarious way. Yeah I also think this is coming from another case that I'm looking into, but We don't know how many keys they actually had for this apartment. So since it's a one bedroom apartment There's a chance they might have only had one key And maybe Maybe Karina left without the key. and faith had it on her. So then when she left the apartment, she left the door unlcked Oh, that is a good point. Yeahah. Yeah. if it was a dead bolt only door because sometimes they don't have the lower little little locks. so yeah, it's It's definitely impausible you think. But Krina left the apartment complex in Jordan's car and then spent the night at his place Unbeknownst to her, this would be the last time anyone saw Faith Hedgepeth alive. So then around ten thirty AM on september seventh, Karina woke up at Jordan's place and needed a ride back to her apartment She had a paper in the unit that needed to be turn in for class a couple hours later. So she called and texted faith multiple times But there was no response. She assumed that Faith was, you know, still asleep. So she called their mutual friend, Marissol Wrangl agreed to pick Krina up and then drive her back to the apartment complex Trina and Merisol arrived at the apartment around eleven AM and immediately after arriving, they both started calling Faith's name, hoping to wake her up before even entering the bedroom However, when they entered the room, the two girls discovered a just horrific scene Faith had been brutally murdered with blood pooling under her body, staining the bed. She was found partially nude with her shirt pulled up over her face and she had been wrapped in the bed's comforter immmediately Terrified and devastated, Karina called nine hundred eleven, and here's a clip of that call Pay attention. are on nine hundred eleven. Where is your emergency you unconscious Ma' you Give me the address it cuff Repeat it to me time to make sure I've got it correct night You know two. ell number you're calling from you mind enty five. Okay, you say your friend is unconscious? Okay, listen to me Okaykay, listen to me List to me somebody's already sending me the ambulance I need to get some information from you and I'm going to I'm help I'm going to tell you how to help her, okay Okay how old is your how old is she Yeah. You heing see? it. Sentiment is she breathing You need to check and see is she breathing? It flood everywhere laying on her stomach in right coming I need for you to help her. I need for you to go up to her We need to see if she's breathing or not Cinceiny, go up paramedics are on their way Stay on the line and tell you what to do next, all right Are you right by her now Carefully. Moving. Okay. farm How many does she how does she feel Okay, ma'am, we need to find out if we can help her or not as I'm asking so we can help her All right Now it's important to note that in the years since hurt tone and her word choice and pretty much everything about this call has been hyper analyzed just endlessly with people calling attention to her strange choices and describing the murder and just Um I mean, there's so many different things that people have really picked apart. and I think that's totally valid I think the call definitely there's some strange elements to it, but it's also important to note that she is very young She's walking into a horrible scene. I think she's in shock. and I'm not saying that you know, it's unfair to analyze it. I think it's very valid, especially in the years where there were no answers. and There is some sketchiness with her Um, but Yeah, it's tough. Yeah, it's imp possible to know if it's performative or not. Right. And because nobody knows how they're going to react in that sort of situation. And if you just walked into this grizzly scene and it's your friend and you know, in this horrible horrible state And you know, people are going to look at every little thing she says and the word choice and you know, for one, like she says unconscious, like describes her as being unconscious. and it's like, well people would say, Well, if you walk into a scene like this and there's blood everywhere and you know, that's kind of a strange thing when you know, you could clearly tell that she's deceased and things like that. but it's like Nobody knows what you're going to say, especially when you're on nine hundred and eleven with a dispatch. When you're that young, like your perception of walking into something, like who knows if she's ever seen anything like this, probablyably not or if she's ever learned about, you know, cases or anything, you know, it's its I don't know. it's easy to look at it in hindsight or as a person who has the answers now that she was murdered. I think she yeah, she's just so young Well, one of the things that people bring up is the fact she mentions multiple times, I just walked in. I just walked in. I just walked in. And so many of be like, well, in this type of situation, That's a little bit weird to like insinuate like over and over again that letting the dispatcher know that you just walked into this and that you weren't there prior, you know, like there's Out of all the things that they could possibly say to a dispatcher, just trying to also see if the person is still alive so that you can render aid until, you know, an ambulance arrives and stuff like that that she would say something like that. But again, We just don't know. And she said, unless I misishard, she said I'm tired at one point, right? I'm just so tired or something I don't know. I don't I I hg up all that. Okay, I may have just heard that wrong But she probably was exhausted too from being up, you know, super, super late. and who knows if she really got any sleep the night before She just sounds out of it. I mean, she still might be intontoxicated for all we know. And again, I'm not trying to overly defend her. I think it's just important to note you know Well the reality noobody knows what they're going to say in that type of situation. Yeah, regardless. and you know, without further evidence, it's impossible to know if this was performative or sort of a planned interaction or sort of a script she made for herself prior to calling nine hundred eleven. Bea there was another statement saying somebody had to have been in here which a lot of people you know, they've pointed out that it's too obvious, that it's almost like she's trying to paint the picture immediately that she's not the one who was in here. I just got here. someomeone must have been in here. but also if you walked into your apartment Especially being a young woman, I think the shock of realizing someone must have been in here. It would be scary and that would be something that would be on my mind if I just walked in. Yeah, and I think it's it's hard to determine the level of shock she's in and also everybody reacts to being in shocked differently So if you, but if you remove that element from this There are other weird things such as the fact she didn't even mention that Merissel was there as well at the time of discovering faith and the other Kind of odd thing is she never said faith's name M. Yeah, that is true. which is said which is different a little weird, but. Again, it's hard to say, you know, I think all the being in that situation Yeah It could go a bunch of different ways. I think all these things people have pointed out have could have other explanations for them that would make perfect sense. It's definitely more reaching. It's not like she said anything directly incriminating about herself or acting But we will discuss a little bit more in detail about how people received her nine hundred eleven call when it was made public, but just keep in mind that from the jump, Carina's demeanor definitely seemed a little strange Now on top of that, something to note is their downstairs neighbor said that Karina Norm Merisol sounded sad. and that she may have even heard them giggling or laughing. But it's really important to note that this statement is coming from an elderly neighbor without the knowledge of Faith's murder who was hearing this alleged la laughter through the walls of her own apartment And she didn't we have no idea if she heard it before the girls had gone in or after So you've got to take that with a grain of salt because of course, if they were just walking into the apartment and had no idea, they're about to walk into, giggling and laughing isn't anything to be concerned about But meanwhile, in Warren County Connie was at work in Roanoke Rapids when her manager was the one who actually informed her what happened. She said they told me, faith is dead. I didn't believe her. How could faith be dead asked if it was a car accident or something, but no It wasn't that This didn't make sense. When I got off the phone, it just hit me burst into tears Although Connie was in shock, she knew that she had to be the one to inform the rest of the family about what had happened Faith's father, brother and sister, all ended up getting into the car and making the eighty mile drive to her apartment near Chapel Hill. And when they arrived, which I can't even imagine that drive must have been just harrowing and I can't even imagine the range of emotions They were they were going through, but Faace's mother asked investigators if she could hold Faace's hand. just so. She would know. I was there, That's what she said However, Chapel Hill pololice informed them that it would be better if they didn't look at the body. And it was at this point that the family was informed that Faith had been murdered According to her dad. He just lost it. And while the family waited outside and tried to begin to process this horrible, horrible nightmare that they're now going through Investigators were inside searching every square inch of this apartment. And the first object that they located was an empty Bicardi peach rum bottle bottle was covered in blood They were able to also identify a palm print on that bottle and surmise that this was the blunt object that was used as the murder weapon They were also able to identify additional DNA from the blood on the bottle In addition to semen that was found on the bed And both the additional DNA and the semen matched h and this would be Absolutely critical evidence and essential evidence in order to rule out suspects and find the perpetrator And now aside from the large amount of blood located in the bedroom, I mean, when you're talking about a crime like this, there's going to be blood spatter everywhere. veryy, very grrizzly In the initial investigation and the forensic work done on the apartment, police identified a small amount of blood in the bathroom as well And what's interesting is that while that small amount went under the radar for years. And it may have even been lost in evidence It has recently become the source of much controversy in the investigation because I think there's definitely some Uh feelings around sort of the handling of the investigation and the handling of the evidence in this case because again, I think there is so much strong evidence that was collected at the initial crime scene that it does seem It' kind of wild to me, it took so long to get to where we are today a later autopsy would reveal that Faith had been very violently beaten to death with that rum bottle. with severe contusions on her forehead which were likely the fatal wounds. A sexual assault kit would also confirm that she had in fact been raped There was also contusions around her fingers, which indicates that faith thought you know, for her life and attempted to defend herself from whoever this horrible person was However one item stuck out to investigators and it was extremely strange On the bed, there was a paper bag from Time Out, which is a popular late night restaurant in Chapel Hill. Faith had been to Time Out the night before she went out with Carina, and it's possible this bag had come from that visit, so from the other night But certain publications have characterized this bag as a bisuit bag. we're not entirely sure it's kind of conflicting reporting on this bag that was on the bed But scrawled on the bag and very large writing was a note that said I'm not stupid Bch Jealous While the note itself was rather cryptic, there was another strange element. The bag, which was found on the blood soak bed was completely cleaned So when you consider the crime scene When did this bag placed on the bed because if it was before the murder There should be blood all over it, but this bag was cleaned The odd thing about this message is we're not sure who the message is for. If it was for faith, why would it be placed after she was already killed If it were for Karina Why would they have killed faith to place it So it's just this kind of you know Qion mark of What is this note Mean, who's it for Is it for anybody? Is it sort of just this reed herring. I mean We don't really know exactly the motive or intention behind this note U, or even who wrote it It's also important to note that DNA pulled from the pen used to write the message on the bag matchs the DNA found on Face body. So we at the very least we know that DNA was the same person No. likely assaulted faith. And while the note provided some sort of clues surrounding who could have killed Faith, investigators assumed that the killer would have been a close acquaintance And so and I mean, that just seems like a very logical place to start in this type of case. So they turn their attention to merisol And of course Karina. I mean, got to go to the people who found her and Also were with her. earlier that night But throughout the years, Krina has spoken to the police nearly a dozen times regarding her and Fe's relationship and the lead up to the murder In this initial interview, investigators were able to establish a timeline for the night before the murder as well as take notes on a few key persons of interest who became the source of much speculation later on. And of course, with a crime like this, I mean face case picked up. all sorts of attention across Chapel Hill very quickly you know, in a college town like Chapel Hill, there'd be maybe one murder a year even, you know, if that Obviously, the news of a popular young student would become well known across campus And early on, the FBI got involved with the case and helped create a profile of this potential killer stating that they likely knew faith and had lived near her which kind of seems sort of common sense to me of like, yeah, I mean 'cause this person must have known where Faith lived or interacted with her in either followed her back, went with her back or had known her prior to, you know, to have some sort of, I mean, I guess it could have been a random person Um, and I'm talking more so like you know, what authorities may have been thinking in the very beginning, but could have been a random person that had just been, you know, looking for you know, a target that was out late and intoxicated possibly that maybe followed her. The other sort of key elements here are very curious. So I know not all of you believe in astrology, but I absolutely do. And I am a taurus. I'm not just a taurus. I'm a double taurus, mooon and sun. Now, when Yuna heard about the murder, she thought back to that voicemail that Faith had left her the night before. And although she had deleted it since it just sounded like a random pocket dial that Faith had become known for Una imagined that it could be a potential break in the case for establishing Faith's whereabouts on the night of the murder. So she first, on her own, which is really impressive. reached out to her cell phone provider to learn how to retrieve the deleted email, and then she immediately just handed it over to police Pint investigators executed a search warrant on Faith's phone records as well They learned the identities of the two men that she had been texting the night before. They were her ex fling, Ty McNeil. and Karina's current casual relationship, Brandon Edwards And since Brandon was also called by Karina the night before, he was immediately brought into the station for questioning, of course. And he admitted that he had been over to the apartment throughout the week and that he had even slept on the couch the night before. And he was also at the Thrill Nightclub, but he swore that he had nothing to do with the murder And this would make sense as both Faith and Karina had reached out to him after returning home making it seem like he did not come back to the apartment with them Brandon was briefly a person of interest in the investigation. His car was thoroughly searched and his DNA was swabbed and compared against the evidence collected at the scene. and in the end, His DNA was not a match So then next, police shifted their attention to T because Faith had sent him her final text message at three forty three AM Ti actually arrived at the station at the same time as Faith's family, and he offered them his condolences before he showed them the final text message that she had sent the night before Her father, Roland, immediately noticed that Faith had misspelled a word in the text message And Rowland said that faith was, quote, OCD about spelling and grammar And he believed that faith did not write that final message And it's also important to note that Faith's toxicology results returned a blood alcohol level of zero point zero two at the time of her death, which is, you know, obviously rather low and not considered to be heavily impaired or anything. Ti was not considered a person of interest like Brandon was since he wasn't at the nightclub. And once his DNA test came back negative, he was also ruled out as a potential suspect. Now You might be wondering about Eric De Coy Jones, Karina's ex, who threatened to kill Faith if he didn't get back together with Karina Well investigators didn't have to go too far to find him because he was actually one of the first people to arrive on scene, which obviously set off alarm bells in the investigator's head because spins more than you would think that killers will just show up at the scene or at a memorial service or a vigil or something like that and weirdly be there. and try to speak on, you know, the victim and their relationship and sort of try to paint the picture like Oh, no, everything was great. I loved her, I knew her and right sort of thing. So yeah, he was interesting to them right away. And those who knew faith were shocked when Eric Wh they knew. did not like her. showhed up in local news coverage. of her murder saying only positive things about the girl that he publicly disliked. And since Eric lived in the same apartment complex, he walked straight to the news cameras and gave his statement And unfortunately, we can't find this clip. It's archived somewhere online. I'm surprised It isn't more widely available, but it is available in a few documentaries on Faith's case if you want to find it. because it's interesting to see. But of course, this coupled with his previous statements about threatening Faith's life. and his strange posts on social media about forgiving his sins and All that weirdness, police definitely zeroered in on him as a serious suspect And he was extensively questioned on september ninth. His car was also searched and police swabbed Eric's DNA before they sent his clothing to the lab. And in the end, It was not a match and he was no longer considered a suspect And then for nearly two years Face case went cold although Chap Hill Police. obviously they're saying, you know, we're following up on every lead And you know, this was never cold to them. But then in twenty fourteen, after testing and questioning nearly one thousand eight hundred individuals in this case And of course from, you know At the very beginning, intense media pressure and obviously pressure from the family to get justice The Chapel Hill Police Department released over two hundred pages of evidence from its investigation, hoping the public could help them make connections that their investigators weren't able to make And among the documents was Karina's nine andleven call, which is when everyone including Face Family began to suspect her of knowing more about her murder than she initially led on. And if Karina was somehow involved That could explain the strange note left on the bed. And as Ya mentioned earlier, there was tension amongst the roommates. that have, you know, could have possible motive have been some sort of jealous dispute that happened, possibly over a shared love interest However, handwriting experts reviewed the note and said it did not match the lettering in some of Karina's other handwritten documents. However, others said it might have matched Eric's, even though his name was cleared by DNA testing it's important, you know, we want a quick note here that while Public scrutinized Krina, her close friends jumped to her defense And investigators have never considered her a suspect On top of that, she remained cooperative with, you know, the police For over a decade, even though she declined most media interviews And while Faace familyily has their suspicions about Koreina, the police have never You know officially named her a suspect But in january twenty sixteen, face voicemail was analyzed by a forensic audio expert Arlo West and basically he got a hold of the raw audio file and then began, you know piecing it, you know, or pping out all the background noise and isolating the vocals so that we can tryry to hear a little bit clearer what may have been said on that. So let's take a listen Arlo is about to make some explosive claims about what he hears on this voicemail that cannot be independently verified by Crimeewatch Daily here what I believe is iss hedge pets cries for help Those are critical things. That's quite staggering if true. What you believe that we might be listening to is the actual final moments as the crimees being committed, as this young girl is about to lose her life. I would think that that's a good analogy of what I'm hearing in this recording, yes Even there, what we're listening to, would you say that screaming? Yeah, you can hear her emotive voice, the tone of her voice is clearly in pain And like there, she says, let me go. Let me go, let me go. Help me as well You clearly hear what I believe is faith you know pleading, which is being heard., being attacked I hear at least two female voices. One would be Miss Hedpeth. The second female voice is a very angry female There's at least two males that I can hear on this recording At least two There's lines here Ao to the effect of I think she's dying That is chilling. Do it anyhow. Which is absolutely chilling. My hands are on fire. Hp. This to me, this hand's on fire would be the binding of the hands somehow. I'll untie them. Her hands look like they're on fire Arlo, he looked at this pretty extensively and as you saw in the clip You know, he attempted sort of transcribe what he believed he was hearing Uh, which, you know, at the time when this this came out, I mean, this was a big, big deal for obvious reasons because he really thought this could be the missing piece here because it identified Four voices, two women and two males And he heard again, one of the women in his mind was in distress. And face Father You know, when he listened to this, he felt like he identified that voice as belonging to faith. And he seemed to be very confident about that that he's like, you know, it's my daughter and I would recognize her voice And so again, this woman might have said, ow, help me, get off of me, although it's I think posossible to say for certain. Arlo then claimed that the other woman was threatening her saying, Fuck you, I'm gonna kick your face bitch. You liar, you intentionally lied and put up a fight An additional voice might have said she's dying as well as throw her in the river On top of that, Artold claimed that two names could be made out, Rosie and Eric, which I don't think we were able to find the audio particular part of the clip Uh, but They claim that was obviously Eric Jones And the name Rosie refers to Krina's nickname. Her last name is Rosario. She went by Rosie as well. So that's kind of the connection. What are huge connections to make, right? I mean But the biggest claim here is that he believes this recording was made during the time of the murder And again, he said he believes these were during face last moments. Yeah. and this is very u to navigate because there's a lot Well the biggest thing is the timestamp on this voicemail was one twenty three AM. And again, we have CCTV footage of Kena and Faith leaving the club thrill at two hundred seven A So this would Obviously not be the time of her murder because we know it was after this. but And we also know that if Eric is is the voice in the voicemail that there's no evidence that he was at the club that night. Right. So Arlo claimed that the cell phone service provider, Faith and Una used had an issue with incorrect timestamps on the particular phones that they were using at the time. Um You know it sounds like that issue is really typically concerning time simps that were later than when they were set and not earlier, which I had never heard of like earlier time stamps happening. I had heard of the later tim stamps Yeah happening. Right But Arlo sent his findings over to the Chap Hill pololice and when they got this, they completely disagreed with him. Um, because they were like, no, we and and Later on in this crime watch daily, they, you know, they reach out to theop Chophill police and they're like, Well, not only is the timestamp thing not accurate, but also we have other evidence that basically disputes your claim here that this was the murder taking place in the recording. So perhaps this recording is some type of encounter or fight potentially that happened at the club U, but it's prettyretty clear to police that this was definitely not a recording of the murder taking place But in twenty sixteen, the final push in the investigation was to send that DNA found at the scene to Parabon Nanoabs profile the suspect using an experimental process called phenotyping. a really interesting company, really cool technology that they've developed over there, but this phenotyping process returns a three dimensional image along with a description noting specific character traits and physical features of the individual's DNA that's been phenotyped. along with like a Mugsha, like a three dimensional mugshaw of the person So the description came back noting olive skin, dark hair hazel or brown eyes And that this person was of Latino descent. Now this is definitely something to remember for later. phhenotyping is so fascinating and I'm excited to see where this technology goes in the future as it gets more accurate, hopefully. because at this point there's No way to determine just how accurate it is, but In this case seems like it was Um, I wonder if there's like an educational video we could pull up about phenotyping, since Joshn I certain aren't experts. I'm sure Paribon has video on this. Yeah. I wonder if we could pull that up real quick. And insert that Despite the police's best efforts One out of three violent crimes in America goes unsolved There is a new forensic tool that is helping investigators generate leads, narrow suspect lists, and identify unknown remains. Tarabon Nano Labs of Westtern Virginia has developed sophisticated software capable of unlocking information contained in DNA left at a crime scene DNA is a blueprint for a person. It defines our hair color, our eye color, our skin color, all of that is written in the DNA. And the trick is just to figure out what parts to look at in order to make those predictions and learn something new about a suspect just based on the DNA Traditionally, if a DNA sample failed to produce a database match, Law enforcement was out of luck and with that a lead But now because of Parabond' snapshot, investigators will have their first clue of what a suspect looks like with Snapshot We can predict the physical traits of the source of that DNA and make downstream investigation a lot more efficient because they do not have to waste energy on subjects that really can be discounted because of their DNA As the program sifts through millions of pieces of genetic information, it slowly begins to build a suspect's appearance. We only need about one nanogram of DNA, which is not very much We run it through the snapshot algorithms and produce predictions about that person, things that that investigator could not have known person's ancestry, their eye color, the shape of their face, all of that information, then we deliver that back to the investigator Snapshot is highly accurate and has been successfully evaluated by major metropolitan police departments and federal agencies With each trait prediction, like eye or hair color, Snapshot provides a level of confidence derived from its performance on thousands of out of sample tests To give you an idea of the program's accuracy Dr. Greytek's DNA was analyzed. This is a composite picture And this is an actual picture of her Snapshot has helped law enforcement agencies around the world solve some of their toughest cases quickly and efficiently They look at this new technology in snapshot and say, hey I can reinvigorate my case. I can learn something about the perpetrator that I don't know, and that could be really important. So we've had a wonderful reception by the lawforcement community Just as a sketch artist uses information from an eyewitness to create a composite, Snapshot uses information from a genetic witness to compute a composite And in a very real sense It is putting a face. O crime Yeah, really, really cool technology that could just makes such a difference in the investigative world So when the phenotype report actually came out It did lead to an increase in public tips, but no suspects were initially announced. and for five years their family was just waiting. They still believe that Karina knew what happened to faith though they stopp short of saying that she actually did it directly. Her mother, Connie said, My poor baby, I miss her smile, I miss holding her I wish I could just see her and hold her one more time. I'd give anything for that. just So heartbreaking Their family did create a scholarship in Faith's name called Faith Smiles, which allows two members of their community each year to receive funding for a full college education Faith's father, Roland, said Faith was a good person who just wanted a good life and she had it stolen from her A forty thousand dollars reward was offered for information leading to an arrest in Faith's case. and for a while, it was unknown if anyone would be held accountable for her death. Law enforcement was, of course, interviewed a number of times by various media publications about, you know, sort of their confidence in solving this case. and they repeatedly said it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. So it seems like they they kind of had this and again, we don't really know how true that is, but like they pretty confident throughout this whole process that They were going to get this person And I think the phenotyping really helps sort of probably narrow down suspects for them, which It' unfortunate took so long. And even after that, it was like five years and it's just like, it's Very curious to know like what was happening behind the scenes in those five years. That's a long period of time Well, sometimes these things do take a long time. and it seems like It seems like law enforcement was really dedicated to this case and handled it well, I guess from my perspective at this point, although I'm curious to see once we actually find out you know, what what they're holding on to, how much I'll feel like that, you know? Yeah, because It's a lot of people criticize them being so tight liipped about it for so long and take for them taking so long to release information on it You know, to help nail down suspects. I can understand that, but sometimes that is necessary and what's best for the case Not always, so like I said, it remains to be seen. but But an arrest did finally come september sixteenth, twenty twenty one. I remember this day so well. I mean, everyone on the internet was just shocked because no one was expecting this But nine years after faith was brutally murdered and after nearly eighteen hundred people were tested. questioned twenty eight year old man named Miguel Enrique Salgero Oliverres was charged with first degree murder in Faith's case in september twenty twenty one And he would have been nineteen at the time of the murder, same age as faith. And police said that they matched Miguel's DNA to the DNA found at the scene foollowing a DWI traffic stop Prior to the traffic stop, investigators first used forensic genealogy on the DNA found at the scene to trace distant relatives years earlier. And then they use that traffic stop as the final confirmation They also tested DNA from Miguel's family to the sample that was found at the scene, though it is unclear when or how He became a suspect in the case Miguel's counsel pushed a motion to suppress evidence. so there's still a lot that's unknown about his connection to the case. I mean, we have just endndless questions But police were able to connect his palm to the print found on the rum bottle. but None of Faith's family or friends recognized this guy. I mean, no one knew who he was It's completely unknown what his motive would have been for the killing or if he was The one who left that mysterious note this was in opposition to the earlier FBI profile made of the killer. And in twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three court documents, the bottle was characterized as a wine bottle, which contradicted earlier police reporting and confused. a ton of people online Miguel's defense attorney also inquired about the blood that Chapel Hill Pice supposedly found in the bathroom And they claimed they did not have this evidence It's unclear if they're going to use it to cast Doubt on Karina, maybe since she was in the bathroom before faith's death or to cast a doubt on the conduct of the investigators in the case His lawyers may also use this bit of information to negotiate a plea deal potentially In November of twenty twenty four, Miguel's charges were updated to include first degree burglary first degree rape and first degree sexual offense. And according to a july twenty twenty five defense filing, Karina allegedly had blood on her finger when she entered Jordan McCrary's car, according to Jordan himself. And then there's also a twenty twenty five court filing that stated that there is evidence that Karina was still in the apartment Mant time of faith's death And this states that through Faith's toxicology finding in her autopsy, the Chapel Hill Police Department estimated that Faith's death would have occurred before Roserio left the apartments. Which that's huge They're you know, it's interesting because I don't believe she's been charged with anything. Yeah, that's what I'm so confused. But if there is evidence that she was there coming from the police. but is because she's there, does that make her you know complicit with what's happening there? or did this guy potentially break in. Maybe they would have to wait to file any charges against her threaten them both. I don't know. Yes.'s ' very strange though. Yeah and it definitely makes you think about that earlier nine hundred eleven call. likeike I said, I wasn't trying to defend her. through that I was just trying to, you know give another side, but it's all so weird. I think it's also important to note that this is likely a defense filing and this is likely in order, you know, for their case, which is probably going to pin everything on Karina. So there's a chance that yes, the police did say this at one point in the investigation and the defense is using it using it now. But we don't know for certain. I mean, again, this's another thing that we won't really know what the content of it is going to be until the trial Yeah There's gonna be so many questions that Hopefully I answered and not too long. I mean, a couple of months. Faith's family has also remained super tight lipped since the arrest But here's her father, Roland after Miguel was denied bond in twenty twenty one. Let's have a look It's just like it's just a new beginning. change are start Sorry,'s all I have to say. We don't want faith to be forgotten. How do you want people to remember faith and who she was and her legacy? As a person she was, I mean who she was as a person, not as the young lady who got murdered at you endident. What are your favorite things about her that you remember about her? just walk with Just her smile and her loving ways, o. I'm sorry. Thank you very much for I appreciate. And others like Eric have expressed relief since Miguel's arrest since they are no longer considered suspects in the case Um, and I'm sure the online um You know? Oh yeah, I'm sure it's been wild for them. Yeah. So must be a big relief for them. But Miguel's trial is set to begin on september twenty eighth twenty twenty six, and he faces charges of first degree rape First degree burglary, first degree sexual assault, and of course, first degree murder He has been in custody without bond since his arrest in twenty twenty one, so going on five years And if convicted of all charges, he could face the death penalty or life in prison as he should Definitely some answers have come from this arrest, but again, we still there's still a lot to be determined here because I think biggest questions that pop out for me is Who is this guy? Yeah How did he end up at Faace' apartment? How did he know she lived there It doesn't seem random to me. Did she know him? Right, right. Do What's the connection? Is there any connection between Miguel and Karina? Is there anyone else involved? Did he write that note? We were talking about it earlier, The notice is so strange because Your first thoughts when looking at it, it seems like it's written by a woman. to say bitch, jealous, just To me, when I first saw that my first thoughts were This seems like something a man would have written to frame a woman as the killer And of course, that's just my own guess and the handwriting, I'd say is a little more on the feminine side I don't know, it's just so bizarre
