Hey, as you know I don't really go on the road anymore to do stand up comedy except Pererea, California, july twenty third and twenty fourth. I'm going out with a brand new hour. Almost a brand new hour. Let let's be honest, probably about fifty, fifty half hour, new, half hour old. I'll play all the hits, all the impressions and all my new stuff. This is one of my only club dates of the entire year. It's july twenty third, twenty fourth Berea B R E A, California. That's like North Orange County You got to come. Well you don't have to come. But if you want to laugh and support me, you can come. Joe Prino will be on it also . Yeah, it's going to be a great time. Breya California, Brea Improv, july twenty third, twenty fourth. Please buy your tickets early And let me know that you're showing up because then I get fired up and it's going to be awesome. Thank you guys Put your name on it. Just put your name on it. That's a last. Be a man. or a woman, put your name on it. Star Struck. You're one of my top five All time cast members, Jesus, dude Yeah, so kind. Well, it's just you u You're one of those guys First of all, being of the show twice has to be its own brand of PTSD The second time it happened, I just I don't know how you let a guy like Chris Parnell leave the building 'ause you were like their Phil Hartman, you were the glue guy That was very kind. Thank you. Yeah. I mean, you know, there was it was it was a big shock And there was a Enough of an outcry from the cast and the writers that I felt like, okay, I'm not the only one who thinks this is crazy. And You know, I just kept hearing that Lauren might be bringing me back And there was just all this back and forth and finally I just move my stuff back to LA and I would get that a little click. Did you have to do the they didid they ever do the thing with you? They did it with me when I didn't come back and that was, well, we need two weeks to make up our mind Oh yeah, that was aw. I said sure. And then they needed another two weeks and I said, sure. Then they needed another two weeks and my agent goes, in my experience People that really want to work with you don't need six weeks to make that decision. So I went Okay, I'm going to go. then I saw will and u Will Farrell doing Get off the shed was the first sketch. went, I've made a horrible mistake ' I thought it was just astoundingly brilliant. Oh, I know, I know. Yeah. I know it was great. It was quite a debut he had But yeah, I was on the phone with like, Rachel Dratch and some other people who are all waiting to hear that same kind of thing. And we just assumed we would all be back, you know service Big surprise when what did you watch when they came we're going to get to the Hawk and we're a lot of things to talk about growing up in Tennessee, radio dead Your mom is one of the Shirley Louise. Shiry Louise. Thats Parnell. That's like Shirley Louise Parnell and your dad, Jack Parnell. These are names out of like a Runya novel. These are like These are good American gothic names, right? Sure. Do you remember what sketch you watched after you weren't back? or did you just say like, I'm not watching this You know a, by the way Yeah, the show show alive. watch I watched the nine hundred eleven show after nine eleven with Rys Wwitherspoon hosting, 'cause I think that was the first one on that. Take that terrorists. We win We have Rese Weathers. That's right. That's right. Yeah. And I was bummed because I really wanted to I'm such a fan of hers and I really wanted to work with her. But yeah, I watched that, but I wasn't watching it consistently So the haawk let's, I hate when they throw all the plugs at the end. Yeah 'a everyone's like tuning out by then. So the haawk july sixteenth. I think that's right. Yeah. on Netflix. That's the golf one. Will Farrell, Molly, Oh God. is there anything better than Molly Shannon in life? Not much. You don't play a golfer, we watch the trailer only. Yeah, I'm a board member of the PGA tour kind of Will's nemesis. How's your golf game Oh, I have no golf game. I don't either. Do you play golf? I do. Do you play golf, Kyle? No I he plays golf Does Kyle look like he plays golf? Kyle looks like a big John Dailey guy. My thing with golf is I get so enraged. It's just it's like the cruelty of the universe. and I know it's nothing's conspiring against me. It's a lot like life. Yeah. Like people think like, o everybody's out to get me. I go life's a lot like a golf course. Like that green doesn't give a shit about you You just gott to get out there and do it more often. Yeah. But when I put and it goes off the other end, I'm like m I turn it into pesi from.s Mother fucking mud. So you grew up in Tennessee. Did you grow up like a volunteer fan No, I was a Memphis State basketball fan. Memphis State. I don't think I've ever heard that. An Hay Penny was I thought he was straight Memphis State. I think Memphis States became just Memphis It became University of Memphis.. Okay, yeah. so we're thinking about the same school. Yeah yeah yeah yeah U But yeah, that was a long time ago. I was a cowboys fan America's team And I don't think yeah I love the cowoys. Wh's your favorite cowboy Roger stop Oh we werere the same age, yeah. Yeah yeah And Tom Landry was the throwback. When I was a kid, I remember there was Tom Landry Christian comic books. Oh were it really? It was all like about Christian donon't get him started like Christian. It's between you and I. I went to Southern Baptist Educational Center. I grew up going to Southern Baptist school. So Are you still religious at all No that at all reach the age of reason A spiritual little No Whatas was the last time you threw up I don't remember happily. That's good. Yeah. Do you remember last time you threw up I don't know, Carl Yeah, I was like three years ago in Utah got food poisoning. Fast food place called JCW's. A we gonna get sued for that now. I know where it came from. So you teach You go back you go back to teaching We doing stand up or just acting No, I was I hadn't really I'd gone to college, I graduated. I went to the Alley Theater in Houston and worked in their Arentice program for a season. And then when I left there, my old high school mentor teacher, Frank Blustein, said, Hey, would you want to come back and try teaching for a year? Another former student had done that And I was like, yeah, I was kind of disenchanted thingsings hadn't gone the way I'd hoped they would at the theater. like I thought they would say, come around, you know, be a part of the company, even though there was no official company, but there was a group of actors that they liked to pull from So I was kind of annoyed and disenchanted about the whole acting and theater thing. And I said, Okay, sure, I'll come back and I'll do that for a year and see how it goes So most people have to go to like college and get acc credited teach There's a thing in Tennessee where if you are teaching in the subject that you majored in, you can do that for a year. If I had wanted to teach further, I would have had to get accredited I I'm not a doctor, but I did major. So let me teach you how to do surgeries. What was your What's the curriculum? likeike when you go back because as a coach I get nuts excited about what I can bring to the wrestling room to like mix it up and like what I wish I had had as a coach. Is that how you approach teaching like, I'm going to teach the way I wish I was taught, or do you go like, this is what they didn't teach if they should have. What's your approach to teaching? What's your curriculum Well, the curriculum I came up with with Mr. Blustein, I still call him Mr. Blustein. I just saw him in Memphis So he was my teacher. and so I I wanted basically to teach like he had taught because he was a great teacher and We We developed a curriculum for the introduction of theater classes Um The hard thing for me was being an authority figure, you know. I was very young And it was get it. Yeah, I wasn't used to being mr. Parnell, you know. Do you have kids? I do having to Pun punish or whatever, like hold my kids accountable. It's the worst Not part of my day, part of my life Yeah. Like when I got to go, Okaykay, listen I'm like, who the fucks gonnaisten to me like That's the weirdest thing when kids, you tell a kid to do something and they will just do it But as an adult, you realize they can just tell you Now, I don't want to do that Especially when you're coaching a voluntary thing or maybe in theater, like maybe try it this way. they can go, That's not how I want to do it Did didid you have a student that you were like, Oh, this guy's a pain of my ass and that means he's probably going be great I had definitely had students who were pains in my ass. And because every class was kind of like the kids who were really excited to be there and into it, then there's the whole mass of the middle group or kind of like, e whatever. And then there were a few troublemakers U And so yeah, but I' never No, I didn't think they were going to be famous. No being an authority figure That really probably more than anything, more than show business fills me with imposter syndrome. Yeah. You got the same thing? Well, I did then. I mean, I'm old now, you know, so I don't feel that way so much anymore. You tell people what to do and they do it all the time. All of Silver Lake. Everybody most people don't w to hear it, and I get in their face and tell them what I want them to do. Yeah I gotta imagine in Silver Lake are you are a real celebrity. People must just stop you all day. and No? No, not at all. Not at all. I mean, because there' who is the like the biggest star in Silverake U Well, I know I think they still do. Kate Mera and Jamie Bell live there I don't Kate Marra, I don't Jamie Bell Maybe B Billy Elliots Billy Elliot and he works all the time. Oh It's a guy. Yeah, ye we'll see. They're married They're married Yeah to one another And there are others, there are others. Lake Bell used to live there, she doesn't anymore Lakebll seems like a fun hang Yeah. She always makes She's always like early podcasting. she'd make the rounds and she seems like she's just game. and that's why you Oh yeah. Oh yeah, absolutely. She's great Could I ride you Christopher Walkin, the Centaur. my one of my all time favorite sketches And the other one being the census taker with Christopher Walkin, but I don't know how you kept a straight face on that, but you have this reputation. I'm sure you're aware of it, like they nickname you the Ice man C you never break And it seems to be a trap with SNL that I've lived through is Well, this is all you just get those weeks where everyone just the gag is that we're all giggling and having a great time. Right But you never is just is that from the theater upbringing? Like how do you keep from cracking up Yeah, I mean There were definitely times when it was hard, but such you gott to tell us then tell you close the doors that dogs are tirping, please tell when it was hard? Yeah. Well, I mean more Cowbell. I mean, it was Probably the hardest. I mean, with Will right there in my face, you know, knocking on the cow bell Belly the belly Belly out is just right there. So that was very hard There was one, another pretty well known sketch with Will and Molly into Meadows. and Will is this doctor who lost our baby. M and Molly's baby. Yeah. And And then Tim comes in and he's Dr. Poop or something. It's insane. But my secret with that one was I had just done a Tom Brokaw sketch, where I put Brokaw they would put these brown contact lenses in my eyes. and for whatever reason They hadn't been cleaned properly or something, but my eyes I'd taken them out, but my eyes were burning So I was in pain. So I was I was very it was very easy to not laugh at any of the shenanigans going on in that sketch. I have to go get these dogs. Yeahah yeah,ah, sure. Oh, awesome, thanks R. That's great Chris, your dad was a radio man. He was. And you have quite the radio voice. Thank you.. Was there ever a thought that you would just follow in dad's footsteps and that would be a career choice Um, someomewhat. I mean He, you know, he started out as a disc jockey and did that for a while. and then he moved into kind of more the production side. But he always did voiceovers commercials and things and narrations. And so then he had a studio in our house And when I was younger, if he ever needed the voice of a kid, he would use me and my sister. So I got to do that. That was fun And then I did work as a disc jockey a couple of summers from when I would come you guys just kept going without me?. was this? What a creep. What a session? I figured I get some questions in while you were getting the dogs. That's trank Th are cuties. But you like one? I'm sure. She likes to be p. That's Birdie ty? Yeah. They'll just keep bar. They're just barking. Yeah. Firt. So would you ask him and I'll answer and then it'll be usable clip. I asked him if he ever thought about following his dad into the radio game because he has such a great voice. You really do. But doesn't everybody kindind of our generation, we all have like that radio dream U Well, you know, I was saying I I went back when I came home from college during the summers, I worked as a disc jockey for for a couple of those summers. One was at One time was at WHBQ, which was my dad's old station, this big rock and roll station in Memphis. and I don't know what their format is now, And then I worked at a country station in Mississippi called WVIM hot hit country Who wrote the Centaur sketch U I think that was I don't know if it was Will and McKay I think it was Will Farrell and Aam Mcay. and then And I think McKay said, you know Youre going play he's like, no, no, no, this has to be Parn. So like Will, Will gave me. part that I think There are those dream moments where Somebody writes something amazing and they just go, No, Jay is going to play it Like for me, it was any motivational speaker sketch Yeah. They're like no make but mine was because David Spade was at a party and didn't want to come back to rehearse Yeah, so we wouldd just be on the phone like, well just put J in it. So I got in like two motivational speaker sketches that way. That's. But I never had somebody like specifically write Well, that's not true, but Jesus. This is chaos all of a sudden. We had complete quiet and then we got dogs barking, there's babies upstairs, and none of them are mine. These are't my dogs, Chris. They're not your dog? No. It's got to be weird. like for I don't know if I could let go of the ego to write something like the Centaurs sketch and hand it to somebody else to do I know, but you know, Will was such a star on the show already and just like he was clearly hitting on all cylinders and it needed firing Straight, straight guy Yeah, like where will everybody be laughing as soon as he's like kind of like Kramer, L people start laughing when he comes through the door.. Whereas you were just like someome of those were from Yalemen. so don't hold it against me. Like his awful attempted humor Chronicles of Narnia, perfect lazy Sunday. What is your perfect lazy Sunday? Wow Um well, with kids, I don't have You know, I mean, I guess theate perfect lazy Sunday would be Swimming in the pool. Are you swimmer recreationally not I don't like swim for exercise. Oh no, no. I run Are you really runner Do you feel do you run long distance I go like six and a quarter, six and a half mes. I try to do that three times a week.. But that's not that's not I mean, compared to people who I wrestled and the most I ever ran was three and a half miles. I hate it so much. You know, I did wrestling my freshman year of high school When I moved I moved to the new school, Germantown High School. The Red Devils. The Red Devils very nice. from SBC Southern Baptist Educational Center. And so I was kind of didn't know what to do. And I met the guy who was sort of showing me around was on the wrestling team. He said, you want to try it? I was like, okay, sure, man, that was the hardest exertion I have ever made in my body, it was insane How long do you think a wrestling match is Three minutes. Six minutes. Okay came under went other You fuck the whole premise. People like, caught a fish. Guess how much it weighed? likeike a thousand pounds. No, nine. nine pounds, but it wass still like a giant fish o being I thought there were rounds though. There's not rounds in a wrestling match. Yeah S quarter round Th first quarter, second quarter. Period, sorry. Period D me did you wrestle I would have made you a state champion. Oh my God. What could you have done with part now Porneels Pornellel's a gamer, bro. Porne Pornell's, you strike me as a rank and file guy Kind of ye. Like, well, I don't like it, but this is what we've been assigned. So they told us to climb the rope a few thousand times. That's right, That's right. Wrestling Yeah, wrestling practice is where the football players go to die Yeah. But If they stick with it, it seems like the football scholarships are all in the wrestling room. Is that right? Oh yeah. like Amicah Parsons from the former cowboy. He was just here about a month ago. It's like, he was incredible wrestler in high school because you cannot leverage a wrestler. R. So if you're like an offensive defensive linemen, all those offensive linemen Those guys that wrestle like forget it. Yeah. Forget about stupid wrestling. So you don't remember when you threw up last. I'm really gonna don N McDonald. So you don't remember when you threw up, but you have thrown up in your life. Joe's never vomited in his life. Is that true? No, wow No, I No you have not. o. How old are your kids They are nine and twelve, two boys I think boys It's almost like maybe we're not because I have two boys, twenty three and fifteen Different moms because I like to fuck, you know, sure. I think like maybe I still don't know what it's like to have children because boys can be really easy. Like you can lie to them and manipulate them. You know what I mean? Like like they'll ask me like, can we watch TV? and I'll be like, we don't a TV. They're like, oh o And they just do something else. Are your boys easy Um, not, I mean, my twelve year old is just, you know He's in his room all day watching TV or playing roblox or something, you know? And so that that's the challenge is getting him out of his room. Sounds familiar. But he's doing a swimming camp this week. so he's getting out in the outdoors. Do you remember He went to beach camp fitness by the seea in the palisades? Yeah. Oh my God greatest thing I can't recommend. It's gonna to take you two and a half hours to get to the Palisades with Silver Lake. Well, he just went to a sleepwake camp on Catalina whichich was fantastic. It was like a one week sleepawake campps. How do you do? I think he loved it, you know. you think didid he tell you he loved it or He did. It's hard to talk to yourself. It's hard to get anything out of him, you know. Oh my God, you're telling my story. Or when you do Don Pardo when Don Pardo was sick Yeah When you imitate it. didid you do the announcements as Don Pardo? You know, I know that it says that on my on my bio somewhere on IMDB maybe. That's where I got it Yeah I may have, but I think Darl always did it. Darrel Hammet. Oh D Maybe Darl is in real Yeah, I mean, Darrel, I think still does it. He is still the voice of the show. But he, you know, when Don was getting older and having vocal trouble and stuff, Darl would step in and do it. So I might have done it once But I don't know why I would have done it instead of Daryl. That little booth across from Laurences little station. Don Porto. Yeah. How did you ever like sit and talk with him? A L little bit. Yeah. He's such a sweet, like just jersey guy. I know. I know. I asked him once I said, Wh's your favorite musical act ever in the history of the show? And he goes, Are you kidding me? BJ Bon I go, Billy Joel, he goes, Bon Jooby. He goes, That motherfucker can sing. And then he got up and walked away going, Bon Jooby And then two weeks later, Bonjovi's on going, w I'll be there forever and a day off. And I'm like Jesus, Bonjovi can pipe it out ny B Jovy. I would not have guessed that. Isn't it weird now Don Pardo' like, ladies and gentlemen, an AP Rocky He went like Linda Ronstad unt like Du baby Wh Did you have a musical act that you just couldn't believe you were watching them? I mean, there were there were a few. I guess the big one was probably you two Oh, very excited to see you too. And REM. Ory am. Yeahah, Atlanta? Yeah, Athen. A. Ath. I knew I was I knew I had the A right. What do you remember what songs you two did Hm say elevation, but I'm not sure. They seem to always do the current hit and then they always wind up closing with where the streets have no name. L they can't It's like they just can't get. it's like A and Costello have to do who's on first no matter where they go. Yeah. Well, this was amazing because This was the moment where Bono walked off the stage And it was completely unrehearsed and he walked around the studio singing with his wireless mic And then they were scrambling to just follow him and bring up the lights. And so it was a real like rock and roll moment. And I happen to be out there on the floor watching which I always would be if I, you know, had the time between sketches, which I often did U So yeah, that was that was super cool. There was a moment I'm in the writer' room, I think was on a I guess it was on a Thursday and I look up to the monitor and it's the live feed to the studio and Nirvana is like just doing dinging, dinging, dinging. There's no sound Well, I'm useless as Tits' on a none here. So let me just take the elevators down to eight H. and I was just like from me to Kyle from Kurirk Cobain. Yeah, sccreaming It's you can't believe And you knew at the time that this was like because I feel like in ninety four or whatever that is or ninety two. Like they're just Nirvana But now they're like Nirvana. No, they were never not Nirvana.. Once neverever mind came out. So this was a utero So they did a heart shaped box and rape me. And it was just, they were very much Nirvana And then I realized like, oh, every week, I'm going to sneak out of the writer's room because I wasn't very Were you a big hands on rewriter No, I was never in the writer's room. Do you were a writer? No, I wrote, but we were unless it was a sketch that I had co written, I wasn't it though Did't that change? Becauseuse I was there, it was like we just got the pile of sketches and we just rewrote every sketch. And then you'd get like a Mike Myeers sketch, which was ostensibly perfect. And guys are pulling their hair out because they don't speak Yiddish Yeahle and Harvard are like, What does this even mean? And I'm like, It means it's fucking Linda Richmond Coffee talkal. L just it's kind of perfect. M's a well oiled machine. Yeah I'm sure. Yeah. Where was your SNL audition He was on all base You went Jesus Christ with the I'm sorry, Chris. I didn't Is that another dog? Oh you could just shut the door I get my questions and go for it. go for it. Tell us more about the Hawk. Well we have we have hawog time I'm play PGA tour Yeah, I play a PGA tour board member Um, And we have to be specific. it's the PGA tour because it's a separate thing from the PGA, which I did not know But u But yeah, I think it's going to be fantastic. Wh'd you guys shoot then? U We shot it. a lot of it was down at Pelican Hill Resort As I say Newport? Yeah. yeah Um, they have an amazing golf course there. But that and other golf courses around the area. Yeah, it was beautiful down So your S andL addition is at eight H How do you go from teeaching drama and theater arts. Like what's there's there's a big chunk of the There's a pipe wedge missing on this chart for me. No Like he taught it, you know, and then of sudden he's on SNL. likeike what is that in between? what were you doing I after I taught for a year, I was like, okay, I've got I've got to really try to pursue the acting thing. I really want to do that And so I always thought I'd go to New York and do theater, but then I had friends in LA already. And LA just seemed less intimidating and warmer. And soved I moved out here. and with one of my buddies from college and we got an apartment together. and then Very shortly after getting here, some friends said You've got to do the groundlings. You got to take classes the groundlings. And so I started, like I moved out here at the beginning of January. I started taking classes in February And everything came out of the groundlings for me. You know, littleittle guestar parts on sitcoms What was that first one? That first guest start where we were like, oh my Godd, I'm in show business. Hope and gloria And the reason I got in it was because Tony Sepalva, a big casting director, he was the director of our Sunday show at the time. And he brought me in. I still had to audition for the producers, but Yeah, it was a cool role and was it was great. It was fun. I don't know. Hope and Gloria and Tony Sepolva sound like fake names to met Tony Sapolva. so he's real. Yeah D's real. All right guy. seeven degrees Celsius. How long does it take you guys to record Always wondered this, whenever there's like Chronicles of Narnia and or like when there's a sketch where you have like an album out and you got to do like an actual song, how long does it take you guys to like bang out songs Well with lazy Sunday, I mean, we did it. in an afternoon in Andy and Akiva and Norma's office We recorded it in there with. Were you in on writing any of the lyrics? Yeah. And you guys how so this fascinates me So sorry to keep interrupting, but like, oh my Godd, I got Chris Parneell in front of So Where does this idea come from? Because it' it's so Dada. It's just it doesn't You couldn't pitch it. You you know what I mean?? Like you have to show. it has to be like a Tom Siller Like here's a thing I made because if any step of the way, if he explains what he's doing, everyone's going to go, okay, c. You know what I mean? I do. So like Narnia, did you just show Lauren the finished product Pretty much Yeah, I mean, becauseuse Andy and Keven Norman had this great skill set. They'd done all these other videos and shorts and things So they came in with that and they'd seen me do my weekend update repps And they just said, hey, would you be up for doing thing with us and I'm like, Of course, of course So we, you know, wrote it in their office and then I don't know if we recorded it the same day or the next day and then went out the next day and shot it You know, and then they edited it So it's done recording. Do you do it like on a Tuesday, Wednesday like Thursday? does it hereere's the better question. Is it in the usual machinery of meeet the host Monday, Tuesday, we're going to write our sketches Wednesday we're going read them. orr is it just something that's sort of happening as a satellite A little more of a satellite. I mean, yeah, I mean, I think I want to think we probably wrote it on a Tuesday one does and probably recorded it And then after the table read on Wednesday is it at the table read I think so. No. No, we went and then we went out and shot it on Thursday of that week. I'm pretty sure. shot the whole thing on Thursday Gerilla style. And and then they edited it on Friday and Saturday. and What's? What's the recognition factor when you're in the street shooting it? Are people walking by like kind of messing up the shot or people like, o, shit Andy Sandberg, Chuis Porneu 'cause New Yorkers don't give a shit. They're like, Oh, my man from the SNO. No it was we were pretty You know, we were We didn't draw a lot of attention. It's certainly SNL's first like viral moment. Absolutely. But its even more than that, it's like maybe the first Mga viral video. Things were like kind of going viral before that, but that's maybe the first thing that every single person saw that week A lot of people did. Yeah. And the crazy thing was NBC wanted to get it down off of YouTube because it's, you know, copyright. No, it was sorry. you can't show that. Um And or like are you are you serious? Like this is the best publicity the show could possibly have Finally, they may reached some agreement, I think and put it back up. And the original one that everybody saw was just somebody had like snagged it off of likeike recorded it and put it up on their own. I You know, I think it came from an official tape, but I don't know if it was We're saying maybe it was Yorm's brother or Kiva's brother or somebody that did it I'm not sure how I can't they know. I can't remember how it got up there. Yeah. but yeah. What was the reaction in that like what did it feel like In real time, what is it like Is it like a hit right away? Are you guys kind of basking in the glory at the next table read? Was everybody then like the Naria guy answer any of those four questions. Well, it was the last show before Christmas brereak and Jack Black was the host. And we knew it went well, you know in the studio. We could hear it. And we were very happy with it. We thought, oh, this is great. But I had no idea how well it had gone or how big of a thing it had become uil while I was at home in Memphis, I got a call from Mark Lepas in NBC Publicity And he said the New York Times wants to do an interview with you because of Lzy Sunday. It's they're doing a whole story on it. And that was the first hint I had that like, oh, this is This is a big thing. It really was that's a way to put it, Joe. It really was the first viral Like the first thing in our, you know, in the society to actually just go viral. Yeah 'causeuse up until then it was just people would pass around VHS tapes with like eleven different things on them. They'd be like a walrus masturbating or some guy like falling out of a tree with a chainsaw. And then suddenly there's the It was very New Jersey specific. I was on a date with his mom and she had one of those VHS tapes that the The asssistant director gave on the set of Las Vegas. And it was like forty minutes of just like, you're not going to believe this. Like basically you're polar bear sketch was on it. And we're watching it on a date and I'm like, o my go. toer birst The entire cast of men go to u see the polar bear cage The zoo somebody goes like, Hey, I bet you you can't swim to the end of that you know polar bear mot and back without the polar bear killing you. And I'm the first guy over and they all get sprayed with blood. And then the sketch. Oh J's wallet. his Oh, no, I know exactly the point. Polar Bear didn't get his wallet I bet you can't get it. And then Norm and Chris start fighting, arguing and then eventually we all go over the moat. We didn't have an ending for it. Right Uh So then they had David De Cany just say Hi, I'm Did Ccany. This is not a sketch this really happened. These people are sick. like it almost didn't make it to air It was it was literally S six PM Saturday where we just went. just say, just say it really happens Yeah Yeah. So you're at groundlings and thank you for putting up with my ADD and the dogs and the babies and the teenagers on the couch and the Um You're at Groundlings, you So Groundlings is sort of a funnel towards SNL. Are you aware that that's your end game? Do you want to be on SNL or do you want to do drama You know, it wasn't clear that it was a funnel to SNL when I started. It wasn't until Will and Sherry and then just shortly after that, Katan got on SNL it's like, oh, this is This is how that happens. I was already in the way into the pipeline by then, which was great. the groundlings. And sort of after everybody began to see that, and then you, you know had me and Jimmy and Maya Briston Um so many people get on then the classes just got flooded, you know, I mean, it just really blew up for the ground. So it just took a lot longer from then on, I think for people to go through the program. I was very fortunate. I kind of flew through. Um But yeah, no, I mean, I I auditioned My agent sent in some tape for me The first time I think it's when Anna got hired And nothing came over. I thought, okay, all, that was my SNL shot. you know,' Hopefully have some success with the sitcoms. And then unbeknownst to me, they came and took another look. They were scouting again a few years later. And I happily I didn't know that they were there. And then I got the call that they wanted to fly me to New York for the audition That's gott to be nerve wracking It was, it was. It was exciting and terrifying. But you went with Anna. No, no, no, Anna was before me I was on the show like one or two years before me. Okay. And but you guys did, is this right that you guys auditioned for weekend update at the same time? We did. we did we did do an audition for weekend update. But that was like a year or two or maybe even three after I'd been there Who was Wekend Update when you got there? Colin Colin, yes, of course, Colin. This is my story, folks. 'm sticking to us You'd be perfect. You probably if I'm Chris Parnell auditioning to be the news anchor on weekend uppdate, I got to think Oh I got this I know. I didn't I honestly didn't think that Just because I don't know, there's so many funny people there, so many talented folks. I'm not going to assum becausecause I, you know, I have this voice and, you know And I have this talent and these good looks. Well I do Broa. Tom Broko. Who did it? Rick Crome used said to a joke about Tom Brokhal being an alcoholic, but he didn't say he was an alcoholic. He just said he said, our leads story tonight, we're out of ice. And I remember like as a nineteen year old comedian thinking That's comedy. Yeah. L he didn't say he was a drunk, but the lead storyies were out of Vice always got me nuts. That's nice Carby did it. I think a Carvey. Brokca was Brokca, I think, before me What was the longest makeup you were ever in? And how do you do with like life masks and stuff That was okay. I'm okay with all that Did you have a hard time with that? Yeah. ye. You know what that is Austrophobia Well like But He wasn't a doctor, but he did major in it. Psychology. It's when they pour like plaster of whatever all over your face down to your chest and there's just only nose holes with straws And they're like, you can't move. and we can't stop it once we start s going to be about five, ten minutes And you just in there and you're like, I got to get the hell out of here It would be awful. No I don't know if I could do that. And then you see your life mask. on like a dummy head And you go, oh, that that's literally what I look like when I'm dead. Right. I know. It's just me dead Yeah It's so spooky to see your own life mas. Yeah. And I think They had Bruce Lee's life mask Um, For some reason at SNL Yeah, well, it was, um Jesus, Ladies and gentlem, Louis. Louis had it. Louis Bruce Lee Louis, who did though life mask for me anyway and wason Ceagliano Okay I think Louis may still be J just in my ear the whole time you saved me It's okay, Jay. so I'mmerking bro. Oh yeah He knew. He just knew I was baby deer out there ha But the guy who did your mask had previously done Bruce Lee. I think so or he gotten a hold of it? Like he had bought it or something? I don't know, but yeah. And then it's easier to do prohetics on Chris or on me because you can practice on this This floating head You're like Captain Pike Yeah I'm so far on track. Fucking put one on the board for me. What was the longest All right What was the longest makeup you think you had to sit through? E, N even on SNL period Oh, um I did this movie Jaws No, it's like a scary funny movie with Windndy McCleindon Covey Um The It's the books. it's the series of books And there's a puppet involved ' is how old I am now. I can't remember anything. Kyle's only job. Is it goosebumps? Goosebumps. Goosebumps too. Thankk you very much. Gotta give Kyle a little Thank you for that. So yeah, I had to be an ogre in that, which involved a lot of prosthetics and hand and arm stuff. But that would usually I feel like they got that down to about An hour long Maybe an hour and a half. It starts it's always three hours. Yeah, yeah It always just starts us three hours. Yeah Have you noticed makeup people? They're kind of like stunt men They will use whatever the time allotment is. They will fill it until it's overflowing 'ause I went from Ricky Lake to Tony Bennett in a commercial break. Wow. But if I was only Tony Bennett, they would have started at noon and finished at twelve o five. Well, you know I'm sure they always did the thing where they if you had to wear wigs later, you were gonna get the bald pait on first and just have that on and then like a wig that looks like your hair then they could easily, more easily change it out. an hour and a half to be the ogre in goosebumps. I think so. Maybe two. but I had arm stuff too, It was a lot of You don't get claustrophobic at all Not really, thankfully. It's a blessing. What is a blessing. What is like your hiccup your kids, you strike me as like just P presidential, Like nothing bothers you, nothing rattles you. like,, it's a civil war. you know, we'll wa it out what's like what's your what's the thing U What are you afraid of You know, You don't like to cuddle, like you're a longistance from. I just I don't like to be touched at all in an Um I don't know. I don't know what it would be. I mean I've I'm lucky that I've gotten to do what I've done for long enough now so that even doing something I like doing when we did the SNL fifteth and Andy and I did the lazy Sunday out there at Radio City. You know, I had done enough stuff leading up to that that You know, I didn't really, I was a little nervous, but I didn't have to like freak out about it And that's That helps me so much. I don't like being working from a nervous place, you know. but don'tah Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I guess I fear Crazy people, criminals, guns, you know Are you A you the type of guy? you strike me as the type of guy? The higher the stakes, the more you kind of can zen out into everything's fine Uh I'd like to think so Yeah, I mean, I have to because can't I can't work from nerves. I don't work for nerves very well. I think what I noticed the most is how other people freak out and I go, oh, now here's where I play the other guy Yeah And that happens most backstage when someone's rushing you to a stage like you got to you gott to like if you play like a music festival or something and you're just a guy they throw on and they're like, you're on stage two. And I always go. Oh no, no. and then I'll like super slow my roll and they're way the fuck ahead of me. Yeah. I'm like, I'm good at identifying the energy I don't want to be. Absolutely. That's a good approach. You're not afraid to fly heights Snakes. Coffins. I mean, I little balloons. Afraid of certain heights, I guess, but not so much so that I won't go to the height, you know What's your favorites Being in the centaer sketch h I was going to say sorryough hp on it but I'm not sorry at all. It shouldn't be. I gotta think if I had that on my resume, I would just walk around with like centaur sketch t shirts on all the time While you're in it are youre like, I can't believe how fucking phenomenal this is U, you know, you're just focused on getting your les andia at the moment. She's look, what's true Do you have a favorite walk in story Um, there was some after party is already great And just it's not a it's not a story. It's not much of it. I just remember Walkin was in the bathtub, fully clothed, No water in the tub, but he You know, I think he'd had a bit to drink and he was just in there chilling out. There was a bathtub at the after party It was it's somebody's apartment, I think. Oh o, I'm in the bathtub Yeah I was like, youre done okay? Yeah, yeah Mike Myers told me pitching to Chris in Lauren's office on a Monday and he's just staring out the window, not paying attention Yeah No know, just looking out over the ice skating w. And then at the end when You know, Lauren goes, Chris, is there anything you'd like to do He goes He turns around and goes bass suits of funny ape suits as well What was the first one? Bear suit. Bear suit. that's funny. And then I saw him on a set and I asked him, is that true? He goes, Yeah Big Apple circus was in town H. So it did track like he was staring up the window like, wow, there's a circus out there right now. And then he started thinking about bears suits and ape suits as well. You were voted most talented in high school U I was of the guys. I was the most talented Bed that on like you were you were a overt actor Yeah, I was in, you know, I did the plays and the musicals and even though I'm not a great singer, but and then I also did the morning announcements, which really. cement my, I think. It's kind of like I grew up in New Jersey, suburban, New Jersey where there was such a I would have loved to been in school plays.. There like theater guy Yeah. So it's my wanting to be liked by a larger group superseded my true love off theater. you were an athlete in high school? I was a wrestler. That's not really an athlete. It's more like being a monk. But I knew I was a comic. I knew I was a comedian. Yeah So But that I did like, whyy is that funny? I just think it's funny., I don't want them to call me gk 'cause I'm in theater, so I'm gonna go wrestle. I only wrestled uil I came Th I turn the You're Bio says that you're an expert in stage fighting That is not true. It says It says you're an expert of stage fighting. says you fought Darrel Hammond so that you could do Don Paro's voiceover.. That he made up. That's made up. It says the rock Sena All these people are afraid to get into a states I swear it' Kyle back me up on this On IMDB, it says you're an expert at stage fighting and that you have a choreograph with Jackie Chan and Dwaye Johnson and such. Well, I mean I was in I got to be in a sketch with Jackie Chan where he beat me up, which was great. It didn't take any particular skill on my part except doing this, you know. that looked pretty expert. He also could have walked into bees. The thing that I always think about when Jackie Chan hosted, who has you know, a worship, of course I There wass at some point where he like throws me across a counter, like I guess it was a dry cleaner's shop. And so I go over, but in the process and unbeknownst to me, this is a rehearsal, I kick him in the face He doesn't react at all. He doesn't do anything. and his assistant is like, you know, be careful because you you kicked him in the face. I was like, o shit, I'm so sorry. but he's like so fucking tough, you know didn't like Didn't make a stink about it. but I always feel bad about that But yeah, and then with the rock There was a wrestling sketch and it was about Nicatrol or something. this the way to quit smoking and he was Nicatrol. He and all these other wrestlers. So if you wanted to smoke, you know, they would come and pound you down. And so I just I just had to like beat up by them, you. You're an expert at receiving stage fights, exactly. Exactly. YMDB should say you kicked Jackie Chan in the face. That's actually doesn't say that. No, that's actually true. should We shouldnt get onto your.. Kyle's a tech genius. So get to your Wikipedia page. Fun fact Chris Parnell kicked Jackie Chan. I just love the fact they have a Chinese host and like, we're gonna put you doing laundry That's why I bush that. I think that's what it was. Yeah It seems to me like you on that you're I like your Six years U Well, eight if you don't count my section off the show. Part of my fourth season I was gone. It's my favorite I think it's my favorite cast. likeike you guys and what makes Kyle's Nodding like it's so evvident that you guys were had joy And that gets lost in the panic of the show People forget to have fun.ight. It seems Was that a fair read on it that you guys like there was real joy when you guys were on camera? I you know, I think I feel like we got along well cast And I didn't feel like there was that much drama between cast members. I mean, I kind of later As I was on longer, I would hear about things, certain dramas, but that I was kind of left out of. and But yeah, I think, you know, it's such a fun group of people when you got you know, Will there he's kind of the captain of the ship and Molly and Sherry and Katan and So many, so many funny people. And then I got to, you know, overlap with Andy Sandberg and a whole other group, Kristen Wig and Yeah, it was you did other Andy video, wereere you in Jig in my pants? No, I was a sence I never thought I'd ask somebody The other one was the Natalie Portman video. That's what I was gonna to get to you. because thing about Chronicles of Narnia and the Natalie Portman rap is like they're actually good beats. Yeah Yeah, ye yeah. And Natalie Portman How great is it when you get a host? that's just game. Oh yeah, makes fun Fuck you, Natalie We love you, Natalie. I wanna fuck you too No, she was amazing. So the haawk comes out july sixteenth. ye And is this your first time working for Netflix or on a Netflix thing H I don't I have a Netflix pitch at twelve thirty. I was wondering if you could put in a word for me. I'll give Ted a call. Say, look, he'll bring babies and dogs and teenagers. It'll be a well run machine this Jmore, I can't believe it. Chris, my fucking guess I wanted the most. and I got godamn DMV upstairs And was a DMZ they stink D Miller Tizo. What plays did you like doing in high school What's one that stood out where you like, Oh, this is my wheelhouse U Well, the first one for me that was really like I connected with the acting of it was a play called The Diviners by Jim Leonard Jror, Jior It' beautiful piece and I you know, Mr. Blustein had wanted to cast another one of my classmates, a guy who was a little older than me And he got cast in it, but when he when I did my audition, I just felt something kind of click Um And yeah, so I kind of felt like I understood what acting was at that point. I don't think it was a great performance. But And then a couple of years later or maybe the next year, my friend Dan McCLary and I We played the two roles in the show Greater Tuna where two actors play like ten different roles each And so You know, you're out there on stage at the same time and then one will leave stage and do a super quick costume change and come backack out as another character. And it was just this amazing thing. We had four peoplee backstage doing these quick changes with us And it was it was comedy. and that was where you know, I did something on stage that people really responded to Comedically, the people really laughed at us and it was like, oh, wow, okay, I can how big are these houses you're playing at Well this was this was my high school. This It was the Popper Pipe Playhouse. That's a very ambitious undertaking for a high school production. We did amazing shows. I mean, the musicals we put on were incredible because Mr. Bluein just like demanded so much of us, you know, And you know, we didn't want to piss him off, but we all respected him so much, you know. So yeah, we did fuck. So he's like your lantern career. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. He was the one that said to me, he was like, Hey, you could You know, you could actually do this if you want to for real for a careal. You could be like Al Paccino, you know, So I was like, wow, okay Do you have brothers and sisters I do. I' got a younger sister two years younger. And Is she in the business also No, she's not at all. She's like a square. But she's an amazing mimic. She's such a good mimic. like she can imitate. so many people, but she doesn't have that wanting to be in front of a group of people kind of thing. Do you have a sketch that died at Table Read where you thought you were gonna be out of show business? Not where I thought I was going to be out, I wrote a commercial parody that just was stupid and balbed and terriifbleing. That's your jokes. was it It was it's so embarrassing. It was like rememember crazy happappy funun Ball? Yeah. ye. So I did this thing called Super Box and the box I don't even remember what it was, but it was just it was dead. It's just a box. It was a box that had some special properties But it was mostly me doing a VO for this product. and I You know, I wasn't good enough of a joke writer and it just was It was just crickets. It was awful. It was R I wrote a sketch where Bob Newhart used to be a pediatrician. And now he's a regular doctor, but so he's still sm So he still speaks, like he's talking to little kids. He's like, well, your peePe has a boooo. And that's why when you you know in your bathing suit area, and then I remember in the middle of the table where he looks up because you all realize you're watching the end of my career. And then I was actually happy. Like that I got singled out by the greatest ever do it with this little glass of sccotch that he just sip down. It was the coolest ever. Nice. So your SNL audition, what characters did you do Um Well, it was, you know, the growlings was such a great lead up to it. Yeah because I had done a lot of monologues at the Groundlings and my classes coming up and things. And so I could just take from those monologues. One was a guy who was at a baseball game with his kids watching the Atlanta Braves play He he's got all these different points of focus. So he's like, he's talking to his kids, He's talking to his wife. There's somebody next to him. there's somebody behind him. And you know, I so I delineated all these things and it's very fast. And so that that had gone over well with the Glings. And I did a, you know, a version of that. I did a lounge singer. Sang a James Bond theme song And none of these made it to air No, no. I did a One almost did. I did this guy who It was like a play within a play. It was a guy who was auditioning for the Royal Academy Dramatic Arts and the peace that he had created was him playing a fear from the Babar children's books. But it was very was Babar had betrayed him. And so it was very Shakespearean Yeah. and ultimately Babar killed Zfhir. But so that was that was one that Adam McKay really loved and tried to get on in a different form. We tried to do it with Ian McKellen but it just couldn't quite translate And then I did a dance number Um, Like in when the Academy Awards used to have best song nominees, there would be a dance routine to that Yeah. you know. So this was Iortal Combat was the song that was nominated the theme song Mmortal Combat. U And so I did a I did a dance number to that Where was your office on the seventeenth floor? My first office was with Will and Jerry Collins. It was behind where I guess reception was there then too. It was kind of off to like if you're sitting at the reception desk on seventeen, it was back This way Yeah, back into the left. Yeah. ye. Okay. And but you had another one after that. You had to switch offices. Yeah, we did that. and then later on I moved somewhere else across across the hall over where most of the offices were the writer's room tributaries over Yeah, exactly All right, What if I do? I was Ryer's room last, second to last on the left, and then Schiller was just beyond us. L we were in outer orbit.. And it was me, Davidell, Steve Luckner and Lou Morton And in about six days in, Lou more than ask for another office. I know Lou. ' we made him crazy. How was did. we were just we didn't know what we were doing. Yeah. I had no formal training in anything. I wasm just a comedian. Right. So it's all me, me, me me. Right. And me and David Tell were like, we didn't know how to work a computer. We' writing things out on yellow legal pads and guys were just hitting send. Right and lose like bro We just, he's like, I gott to get out of here. There were four of you in there. It was crazy. Jesus, that that. And ael chain smoking. Oh my God. And then Lauren for his birthday once got him an Otis Reeding box set of CD's and Otis Reading's on the front of it like with his mouth th open and Ateell carved a little hole. And whenever we let a cigarette, he'd give it to Otis Reding and light that one first. Like we weren't mad. We went mad. Like we didn't we were really going crazy in real time. That's. Did you have any like panic attacks or just like Crippling depression while you were there, you seemed like for a guy that was really Let go twice, you seemed remarkably well adjusted. Well, you know, I had a lot of insecurity. So much insecurity. I don't know that I had any panic attacks, thankfully That wasn't that was until after SNL other things when my wife agreed to be my girlfriend at the time. She She told me she had decided she did want to be my girlfriend and that was when I had my first panic attack. Why do think Why do you think that is? Because I had a sense that this was This was it and I wasn't going to be dating anymore So it was the end of my bachelorhood, my frivolous years. This was the woman I was probably going to be with and I was right. and those lazy Sundaay groupies. I was gonna have to continue to bath them away, but So just that fear of commitment, maybe, fear of somebody's gonna really see me now. I can't dress up in character. Well, no, it was the reality that I mean, because I was like I was in my late thirties or I was maybe forty And so I had lived my life, you know, being a single guy. and I'd had a few longer term relationships, but I knew that like, oh All right, this is gonna to say this is goodbye to my youth, my wayward youth, you know. Was your wife in on the ground floor of your career too No, no, no, she, we met after I'd moved back to LA. from SNL and all that. Do you miss it, SNL Um, no It's a weird question. Yeah, I don't know. withith many different answers, I think. Well, you know, I got to go back a few times after I had been let go the second time, which I was much more okay with that time because I was like, I knew it might be coming Um, But I got to go back and do Jim Lair for some of these presidential debate sketches that downowney roade. And so I got to go back and do the sketch. And then leave and not have to stick around and write on Monday and Tuesday. And I was like, okay, this it gave me a great sense of closure because I was like, okay, this is I'm good. I'm done. I did my time. and if I get to come back, great, you know, but I don't have to do all that You seem to play a lot of presidents or presidential looking guys like and even in The clone of James Garfield Oh, in like American dad or family guy? Isas it American dad? American dad? Yeah. was it James Garfield? Yeah. James Garfield. were the clone of James Gar Are you into presidential history or No no What' what do you what's your like passion outside of acting and I love art. Yeah. I love art. Yeah. S Tambly, little C like Wh? Well, you know Van Goh was the greatest to me. I love him. Vo onank. I saw shirt on Instagram. was Van Go going down the middle and then he doesn't have an ear, but when your button pops through it's his ear. That was really ingeniious. That is ingeniious I love Jonas Wood, who's a contemporary artist. He's fantastic We just lost half the audience. so do you do any art yourself or you No, I mean, I take pictures, but, you know, I I don't do it is fine art, you know it's more just family stuff Is Leonard Leonardo Da Vinci maybe like incredibly underrated still I think so. Take your thoughtuss off the air. a ninja turtle after That's right I mean This guy drawing a human body. What's the hardest thing to draw, do you think? Hands? ll probably a face, I think. A face. draw mine. H. Anything you want to Promote other than you have another He's got another show. you're in the Dink as well. C Dink. I got a little part in the Dink. Yeah. that I think it's going to be very funny. I haven't seen it yet but I think it's going to be greatay. Jake Johnson H. a great cast. How many days you did you work on the hwk quQuite a few, quite a few. I was in there ten episodes and I think I was in Six or eight ten That's good Lvin. like the character you have Kind of like what I did on Ghost Whisper, L like they're slaving away. Like it was nine days was one episode and I'd come in for like three. Right right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're just draging ass and I'm like, five days off thing. Right. Is that kind of like how it was on the Hawk? someomewhat. But I mean, I got you, it was enough of a part that I got to be around for a fair bit, which was get especially excited when you get to work with all of your SNL mates. Oh yeah. I mean, You know, I'd gotten to work with Will on the Anchor Man movies after the fact.. But I hadn't worked, I don't think I'd worked with Molly So I remember one scene with Molly and we're You know, it's it's two of us. it's just the two of us. And I remember having the thought like, goddamn Molly is Molly's fucking good. likeike I knew she was. I mean I knew she's brilliant, but like she's a good actor. She's a really good actor And like she I was just so impressed. I was like, oh yeah, of course she is. So she does works constantly and she's done all of this great stuff that isn't even comedy necessarily, but yeah, I was like really knocked out. Well, I think guys like you, Molly, Will Forte, like there's there's an Oscar in there. Like there's no like Molly, if she got in the right project. No, yeah, ye likeike if she was in the think about myself. No like Yeah, I think you're being modest, but like if Molly was in like the ice storm you could totally plug her in to like ordinary people. Oh ye. orrdinary people like Molly, she'd be great. Oh ye. And like Farley was like that too. Like Farley everybody knows this big goofy kooky guy, but deep down, there's Those are some deep waters, man. I don't doubt it.. I think you're in there too. Oh, thanks. He was one of my favorites Ian Hartman. enoy. Phil would come in. Hello. You got a lot of talent out here, Davey, begging under the lights. I had to wait like five seconds on the set. Yeah. I like a guy that's like Let's get on it Who's your favorite musical guest Uh well, during my time, I guess I don't know, due to REM. and then I'm embarrassed to say this, but I kind of Um discovered radiohead for myself when they came on the show I'd heard of them. I knew some of their songs, but it wasn't until they came on. I think it was during amnesiac. Yeah or kid A U which I guess came out about the same time. came I want to. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so they came on I was like, o shit. okay, I get what the What the hoop was about. Well, that's a great three album run Okay computer KidA and Mesiac is crazy. And the Benz is right before that. So four in a row pretty because that's the ongoing discussion here is best three album run ever. and I think the leaderboard is Billy Joel, the stranger fifty second Street glasshouses Like that's kind of tough to beat, but a radio one Radio hass the RT Fy version of that That's my nominee Yeah. Do you have any you'd like to pitch in there, Chris? U, I don't know. I can't u REM had three strong ial album Whats the Frequency Kenneth What was name Monster? I I was a monster guy. Yeah Monster's great. I remember having my bike in Manhattan just listening to Mster on my disc man. Nice withith bass boom. Oh nice. And shuffled. You know that Gary Goldman bit. Now I don't know which one of these eight songs is coming up. Do you know where what's the Frequency Kenneth comes from? Yeah. Do you, Dan Rather? Yeah the guy try to try to bring it back to our news man Yeah What's your favorite news channel to watch I don't really watch the news. I think local news is the only real news anymore I listen to the news. I hear I listen to NPR on like KCRW. You should work at NPR. You got that voice. For real. But I'm not a journalist. I don't have that journalm, but you can read somebody else's journalism. Yeah, but I feel like the people on NPR are real They're hardcore journalists. They're like serious. They're some of the best we have We need them so much and like There The news now is This is the news now. Hey, this happened. Now here's four people that agree with me and one guy over here that doesn't agree with any of us We're going to we're all going to argue over this story And you're going forget the fact that I presented a fact.
