About This Episode

Tonight, I have a great story to tell you. It reminds me of when I was a kid, I used to go camping with my family out in western Massachusetts – we'd sit around a campfire, and my parents would tell me and my sisters ghost stories. It was unclear how true the stories really were, but they were all terrifying. And this story that I'm going to share with you is from Japan, and it happened over 50 years ago. And over the last 50 years, it's been shared many times, and there are many versions of this story, so it's up to you to figure out how much you believe is really true here. But it's a genuinely frightening story. Also, according to some versions of this story, once you hear it, you only have three days left to live, unless you follow really specific instructions... which I'll give you at the very end.

Boys' Night Out (PODCAST EXCLUSIVE EPISODE)

Jul 1, 202631 minSummary

In this episode, the host explores two harrowing accounts of nights out gone disastrously wrong, underscoring the lethal consequences of impaired decision-making. The first story follows three friends in China during the annual Ghost Festival. After consuming methamphetamine, the group hallucinates a mysterious woman sitting in the middle of a road. Following a superstitious belief that they have been targeted by a malevolent spirit, they attempt to protect themselves by burning ghost money. This cycle of drug-induced paranoia leads to a fatal tragedy, as the group’s hallucinations culminate in one friend wandering into a lake and drowning. The second story centers on John, a young man in Georgia who habitually drives home intoxicated after a night at a bar. Despite his belief that he is a capable drunk driver, his reality is fractured by heavy alcohol consumption. After a night of heavy drinking, he wakes up to police officers at his home, only to discover the horrific truth about the ride he does not remember. Both stories serve as dark, cautionary tales about how substance abuse distorts perception and leads to irreversible consequences.

Point of No Return (PODCAST EXCLUSIVE EPISODE)

Safe House (PODCAST EXCLUSIVE EPISODE)

Jun 22, 202635 minSummary

In this episode of the MrBallen Podcast, the narrative centers on a chilling double homicide in Chicago that targeted the household of a prominent federal judge, Joan Lefkow. In February 2005, Joan returned home from work to discover her husband, Michael, and her elderly mother, Donna, brutally murdered in their basement. The discovery prompted an immediate federal investigation involving the FBI and the U.S. Marshals, who quickly moved the judge and her children to a secure location. The investigation, led by Special Agent Douglas Secom, initially faced several puzzling clues, including a broken basement window and a misplaced beer bottle left behind by the perpetrators. As agents combed through potential leads, they focused on individuals who held grudges against Judge Lefkow due to her judicial rulings. This led investigators to explore the connection to Matthew Hale, a notorious white supremacist who had previously plotted to assassinate the judge. While Hale denied involvement, his frequent, cryptic correspondence with a woman named Kathleen Robert-Totzo became a primary point of interest for the task force as they scrambled to identify the killers and prevent further violence.
