You've switched to Nintend vo chair for the week of july third, twenty twenty six. I'm your host Logan planlan, joined by Parish Schneider Hey Miranda Sanchz And Seth Macy Let me just get my sensors dialed in Yeah we're not the Star Fox characters this week. That was last week's episode. So go check it out. It was just hilarious Yeah, we loved. we loved to do it that. It was a blast. But this week, we're going to kind of take a look ahead at the Switch two summer lineup. If you missed it last month, the Switch two turned a year old. We into its second year at this point. it kicked off with Starfox and then we got rhythm heaven this week and a Splatoon Raiders direct. that game's coming out in a couple of weeks. So I kind just want to frame all these conversations around the question is Switch to second year starting off strong. So let's start with the Splatoon Raiders Direct, which aired earlier this week. It got one point five million views in Japan alone. This game's going to be so huge over there. far less over here in the West, but that is the case with Splatoon in general. Par, I'll start with you. What do you think of this fifteen minute presentation I'm I'm actually curious as to how big Salmon run was in Japan versus just competitive multiplayer And long timee listeners of NVC will know that we have lamented the extremely nasty U sniper players from Japan that giveave us a hard time when the game launched. I I look, it's it was one of those games where I'm like, u I'm interested, but I'm not sure if it's my kind of game, right? Like I told Miranda before the show. I'm like an explorer gamer, right I'm like a Zelda gamer or Mro Prime gamer where I want to explore a big area rather than than these sort of more level based challenges. But I watch the director, I'm like, okay, I'm all in. Um nice because we spend so much, my kids and I and I say kids, they're basically grownus, right? But we spend so much time doing salmon runs specifically in co op I think it's the co op mode that's just going to be eating up our time. And like on Switch two, everything is so much easier and smoother to set up for co op play. We're all greatly looking forward to And after the direct, I got text messages from everyone to want to play it. Nice. Yeah, C op looks like it's going to be a big deal. And I'm getting a lot of Monster Hunter vibes from Splatoon Raiders in a lot of very specific ways. And we know Monster Hunter is huge in Japan. and just if you miss those Splatoon Riders direct, there's going to be four player multiplayer online or this can be a single player experience. That's what it's primarily designed for. But there's also this help feature like Monster Hunter's SOS flares. where if you're struggling, you can ask for help and strangers can be summoned from around the world and you can just choose to play for a few hours to help people and jump into matches for people who were calling for it, which is exactly like Monster Hunter. And then just this this gear grind loop thing just looks like Diablo Monster Hunter borderlands, like it's all of that in Splatoon. and I think it looks really, really neat. Seth I don't know what you think. I was you said Borderlands and that was like the thing. I think I sort of jokingly said maybe this is Splatoon Borderlands. and then I was like, oh no. afterfter watching this, I was like, I think this might be Splatoon Borderlands. with weapon upgrades and like customizations and able to swap out parts, which I think the Borderlands franchise would do well to to include, but I I kind of like Par. I wasn't really like I was like, oh yeah, this is, you know, it's a splatoon. So this is going to be Logan leading up all conversations. And now I'm like, oh, no, actually this looks Like something that I'm ret interested in. And I'm very excited now we have context as to why everything is like green and brown and gross and ugly. And we were all worried that it was just like they forgot how colors worked. and now it's like, no, that's the bad guys. They just made everything look gross which is great. And is it is, you know If I I have to think back to the days that when spplatoon was fresh and new. and I do remember that We were annoyed at limited access to Samon Run. We wanted to play more often, right? And then The single player, I think every everybody here played single players platoon before Yeah Oh yeah Yeah, and it Yeah, and I always I always thought it was but it was not amazing, right? There was always sort of like the boss bats were really cool. but overall, I never thought it was like the sort of ten out of ten experience that like a Mario Zelda or any of these single player focused games are. And I'm really curious. and I always thought Salmon Run was super strong. curious to see how this is going to feel as a single player experience U because it is basically The Smmer runun was always so freaking intense. and I do think that the single player lacked the intensity because it was a little bit more explorative and puzzle bed And so I'm really I'm dying to play obestly. We think we'rend build gaming. I think that' my big takeaway is like, oh, there's just so much you can do as far as like customizing your builds, I like the three different archetypes of the weapons that you can get or I guess the what are they called? The tanks. The gadget tanks, Yeah, and the tanks and then the gadgets that youquiip on them. So there's the speed tank, the power tank, and the tactical tank. If I were to choose one, if I were to play this game, I did a tactical tank because I like a little buddy you get, you know? Yeah, a little turret that I think. I told the pair of this. I was like, maybe this is controversial. I don't think it's that controversial, but I don't really like how shooters play on swwitch very much. L I don't think that's that controversial. Yeah, it's like I'm I'm surprised's controversial. I mean like maybe in Japan, but not inia. L like No, no, no if you're talking about, obviously call of duty is not going to look as good on Switch two and maybe not feel as good and online is sort of undercooked. But like is it what is the specific So yeah, my thing is like as someone who does play like a lot more twitchy shooters like I've been on like a big destiny kick again. likeike I go in and out of that all the time played Call of duty, halo gears, you know, like like really into a bunch of different kinds of first person and third person shooters. then coming to Splatoon, it does have like a toy feel to it sometimes, which I don't think is bad. It is definitely unique in how it is. I think And to be fair, the last time I really seriously played Spllatoon was like was Slatoon two. And so I just wasn't really feeling it as far as like what I crave from shooters. And I think this one feels like it's leaning a little bit more into people who want to get like a little bit more depth within the shooting mechanics or not necessarily the accuracy point to point, but at least in the creativity of how you're doing damage and dhing things out and like the strategy of it Obviously shooters are quite complex and there's like all sorts, whether it's like twitchy or if it's tactics based, or it's I don't know. I could get into it But no actually actually I actually think you have a good point there. there's something very different between the w Splatoon feels and the way Destiny feels. I think Destiny, the gun feel and the impact, like when you shoot stuff, it's like it's one of the best games ever made when it comes to sort of shooter feeling callall of Duty is obviously really good at that. Splatoon is so different, but I think the secret in feeleings Platoon lies in motion controls. I think agreed. I think the motion aim is so good The feel is not you have a heavy machine gun and it's this sort of viseral realistic feel. It's very poppy, very toy gun like and very much about the feel of the paint and how stuff like bursts. But but but I think once you get trained on the motion controls, it's sort of It just feels so fast and accurate to me. I always love that feel it, but The way you put it pair to is exactly kind of what I was getting to. It's like it does have that toy feel to it. And I think that is very fitting for a switch game first person like if they're trying to get into like a first party shooter sort of game and that is supposed to be a little bit more Playful and fun. L it totally makes sense with Nintendo and how it is. It's just for me, like personally what I look for in shooters it's not quite that. Also because I really hate using motion controls. So that'skay. Yeah's like that's the problem for me and that's my disconnect. So it's not again, that I'm like anti spatounon. it's just like I don't have as much fun as other people. Yeahah, that's a requirement for this. Obviously like most when a game is multip platform at least in the past on Switch one Always the, you know, the other confle versions were always ran faster and there's a huge difference between a sixty frames per second game and a and a thirty frames per secondit. But I'll say like as a shooter metro prime four and especially at one hundred twenty felt like insanely snappy and good. Yeah. I really like that. Hey But but on the on the direct like the you brought up the tanks, Miranda. I think that's a really cool gameplay feature and it might like to start experimenting with the different types of tanks that you can equip. Yeah might be a really cool thing too. that's what I was going to say. That's all to say. That is my history of this platoon. and like looking at how they presented it in this direct and like the level of customizability you have in like skills and builds, that makes it way more interesting to me. But I hope we see even more of some of what they're doing here in like whatever spatoon they do next, but I know they've changed it over time, of course, as well I think thinkink I'm gonna to like put too much time into this, if at all, I did see that it was only fifty dollars. I was like A a little bit more intrigue now because it's it's a good price point for this, I think. Yeah. if this was gonna be like seventy, I wouldd be like absolutely not. L there's no way I'm gonna pay that much to play this game than I play for like maybe ten hours. But fifty I can maybe find some of my Nintendo friends maybe right here friend Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like Miranda, if you start playing, I think the style will draw you in because like It's so ridiculous. It kz are These are mutant salmons, right? And like you're literally collecting the Ikuda. collecting the sushi salmon eggs, right? And it's like everything is so grimy and gross and they all It's all kitchen equipment that they bring, right? L We have salmons with tongues now in addition to the frying pans and pots and all that, it's just This style is just so weird. We just saw them run through you know deep fried squid rings and stuff like that Yeah. That's one thing thats always alwayscated me is the splatoon style. Like the fashion is fantastic. L the look and aesthetics of it are so cool. And I'm like, man, I wish was into this more. so I get the more. And. I'm super into the style of this one. In some ways, I still am not one hundred percent in love with the coloralette that they chose because I think of Splatoon as much brighter and more Nickelode and colorful But I do think that what's really cool is so your main character is called Mechanic and they Create all of these gadgets and the weapons that they're using and it's just really scrappy and hand crafted looking. Like you have duct tappeed together plastic and it looks like just garbage that washed up on the sword that the shore that they manufacture into something. I think that's really cool. It's kind of giving raaiders a unique identity compared to the very polished stylized look of the weapons generally in Splatoon. So I thought that was really neat D. You talkking about a little bit about the dungeons that we saw. I think that this is something that's going to be this is what I was waiting for because I feel like we've been seeing the same field in Satoon Raiders every time we see this game. And now we've been seeing dungeons that kind of remind me of like going underground in Pickman. and there's like five It's exactly two right Yep, ye, totally. everyverybody I think Pickman too is the vibes I got here, not just the sort of area and level based gameplay, but but the dungeons that you explore Um Yeahah, maybe maybe it's Myamoto in the back saying like, hey, do the do the same thing we try with pigmment and make it make it sell this time in Japan. That's cool. So that's super neat. And then there we saw a look at a mission that basically said, you go in with the gear is predetermined for you. And we saw kind of this platforming dungeon where you don't have all the weapons that you picked and it's limited. and that's something that the Octo expansion DLC in Splatoon two, which is still, I think the gold standard for Splatoon single player. that did that a lot. So I think that Ive agreed with you, Par. Single player has always definitely been second fiddle in Splatoon games. The multiplayer is the draw, but they're getting better and better most times. like just base campaign, three was better than two, which was better than one. The Octo expansion for two was fantastic. And then side order was Splatoon's take on a Rogue light, which it introduced in Splatoon three. And that was really cool and kind of started to introduce this idea Hey, when you're playing in a PVE mode in single playayer We can let you go as crazy as you want. Like this doesn't have to be competitively balanced at all and the screen' just going nuts. and I think they're carrying that DNA forward here as well. But I thought side order was too easy. L they didn't have the appropriate challenge to match how insane you could get with the mechanics. But then looking around on the worldld map in Raiders, it's like this is a level fifteen salmed threat. like good luck. like and you can turn the difficulty up to survivalist or down to tourist, which is a very funny name for the easing difficulty. And so I think this is going to be really, really challenging for People like me who play every splatoon for over a hundred hours I think we should provide some context for maybe people who aren't familiar. When Logan says something is easy, that means it's hard because best platoon players in the world. So take that with a little bit of a grain of salt. Yeah. So for me, side order was very easy, but this looks super challenging and it's like I think I'm gonna play this game for a hundred hours. Like I've been a little hit or miss on a lot of the The switch to lineup this year. L like I was disappointed in Mario tenennis, Yoh she didn't do it for me. Poopia is amazing, but not really my type of game. I love Star Fox. But this one, this is the first one I've seen this year. I'mike, Yp, like this is a loogan game. I cannot wait to dive into this. And we mentioned the price point fifty dollars digitally sixty physically. That gave me pause a little bit Before we saw this direct because I'm like that's the same price as Star Fox, which only takes an hour and a half to beat the first time. You should play it multiple times. It's the same price as Nintendo Switch Sports Rort and that's like a very basic motion control party game. Like how deep is this going to be? And this direct showed me like this looks incredibly deep. Like I think there is so much here, buildild diversity, different ways to tackle challenges. I think that this is going to be a fantastic game I think look everything Nintendo does, I think is market research based and I think they' Sometimes it's not the rhymmer reason isn't Is there enough content in here to justify the price? It's what the target audience would be willing to shell out for and what they see as value, right? And And I do think the younger the audience, I think the lower the sort of When they have to buy it themselves, the price point needs to be in order to get them hooked, right Yeah And it's smart too because it's like every spplatoon has had on the switch, at least every spplatoon' had a single player campaign, multiplayer PVP and Salmon run and some other stuff. And so if this only had just the main core Raiders' gameplay and cost the same as those like mainline entries, I could see some pushback to that saying, there's no PVP here. likeike why would I pay seventy dollars for it? So I think that's a That's a smart move too. and And then people like Miranda say, Oh, fifty bucks, I might jump in and give this platoon spin offff a try. So it's I would a smart price point. Yeah I was thinking about this. It's a little bit as if Activision had taken call of duty and launched a single player zombies Right Like take the zombies game, make it single player with with with co op, obviously and like released it with different levels like that. It's a I mean, if this game is successful, maybe Activion could do just that Yeah, we're getting call of duty on Switch two, which is wild. It's coming back It's like thirteen years away. Back baby. It has to governmental Deree My lo. I'm giveiving to promise. A little heads up. You can get the physical edition forty nine do ninety fiveents on Walmart and Amazon right now. Awesome. if you want to do that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, about they're doing that thing. The good news on this is like third party games have looked great on Switch two. So it's no longer the A, you're getting this this like paired down lesser version there. They're actually pretty good Well' Slatoon Raiders, that is out in three weeks on july twenty third, I believe is the date. Miranda and I have been playing it. Before we jump into Rhythm Heaven though, you can get this game physically. And I wanted to do a quick aside here and just bring in the big news of the week, which is PlayStation ending physical production of physical PlayStation games in january twenty twenty eight. I'm sure some Nintendo fans are wondering Is Nintendo going to abandon physical games? Does this mean anything for Nintendo? So Pare, what's your just gut reaction to that while you're already getting some cartridges that aren't cartridges. Yeah they're still look at this right The move towards not having physical media is inevitable, right? Like the entertainment industry Blue ray UHDs are hanging on by a beare thread. I' getting fish. cororrect. will will I will argue this if they are on the up and up, but anyway, I'm sorry to interrupt. People are building their libraries again. I just bought the UHD for spepeed Racer, Seth which picture quality is such a far cry from what you can watch on streaming. It's like ridiculous on a proper UHD player But no, but the industry of physical media obviously has shrunk Um someome of the issues with people people not going to theaters might be helping some of the physical entertainment stuff. In the gaming side, on the gaming front, it was inevitable that we'll eventually get to a disk less future, right? already you know, the PlayStation five Pro I sometimes forget this. I'm like I'm getting an old game because my main PS five is now pro. It doesn't have a drive. It's like, b, but you can buy an ad on this drive to fix it Um we'll see, maybe Playsttation would go back and say, oh, provide a disist drive in the future because the backlash is going to be fused The main problem isn't that we're moving digital. that we're losing the disk. The main problem is that there's no regulation and no sort of the consumer is not guaranteed that they will have access to their media in the future, which is what happened on the PlayStation, right? The Canal Plus, if you had bought any of these five hundred fifty movies, I think, on your PlayStation digitally, Sly just removed them and says, Hey, Canal Plus partnership is over, sorry They're gone now. And so even though you paid the price of ownership and not rental, your product is gone, which is, I think Luke wrote an editorial today, which is the equivalent of somebody going into your house and taking the disc and saying yoink and leaving. And that's How is that's just crazy in today's age of, you know, consumer protection laws there will be legislation around that. and it would be lovely if some of the companies could get ahead of that. And if Sony could say, hey, our guarantee is that if the PlayStation store ever goes away We will relinquish the the media rightits to this game and you can download it digitally without DRM or whatever, right? Like there has to be a fallback. and This is sort of a wake up call for everybody. I think. we've. Many of us have purchased games digitally and movies digitally. I have like hundreds of movies on Apple on my Apple account What if the shop goes away and what happens to your own data Um There is no way to just download them to a hard drive or a device to keep forever there needs to a solution Yeah, Miranda, I saw you noding a lot during that. What's your take on all this I completely agree with her because I do like digital media, simply because I live in a small apartment and I also don't want a bunch of plastic boxes that I somehow now need to figure out how to store. So like my thing is I only buy blu rays and physical copies of the things I love absolutely most. so that's usually me buying it a second time to get it physically sometimes a third time because I buy had multiple platforms. But as Pry said, we do need just more protections and I don't know if I'll necessarily at least get that in the United States under some administration. But I think in the future, at some point something's got to give because it's not like digital media is new So I do hope that this becomes a bigger deal. and I think some folks who have been playing games on PC for a long time are a little bit more savvy and like understanding like Why DRM free Purchases are so important and there are ways to do that. But obviously when you're looking at exclusives for consoles and things, you don't really have that as an option, right? It's only on those consoles. So the way you did get that is by having your disk. And even then you sometimes still have to do the online check to make sure that like it does all these things Ab I do hope that there is something in play. I don't think Nintendo will necessarily move away from cartridges because they have seem at least committed to evenven for the ones that's like, well, this is technically a download code, but you could still have it. So like I think there's S him more likely to keep with that simply because Nintendo just likes to do its own thing. ike they just I always feel like Nintendo is the outlier in everything that happens within gaming. Like they're always just going kind of this go at their own pace and do things their own way. And I don't see them wanting to part from physical media Well, permanence of ownership is new for Nintendo, right? Prior to the switch, we did buy the games we bought in in the virtual console. went away right? Like you don't have access to the mon swwitch. And it feels like now Nintendo's new approach is you have this sort of a digital garage of ownership that will transfer to the next machine. But none of that is guaranteed. And you know, is PlayStation too big to fail? Is Steam too big to fail? You know, any of these entities obviously out there and we expect them to be there in perpetuity and outlive us, but we don't know that. The e shf went away Right? And like games that had online play in the early PC ages, the online connectivity software, like including Gamamepy went away, those servers were dead and those games were never updated to work again, right? And so Yeah, there's great risk here and I I hope I'm hoping the governments of this planet are paying attention to that Usually it takes people who are media savvy and who are personally impacted to say, hold on a second, I don't like this. Let me fight for my constituents. And It's probably going to come from Europe Yeah, it probably usually does, right? rightight? Yeah I think another thing too is just like a good note for all of us to kind of look a little bit more about like how we value and what we purchase. So like for me, I've started moving more and buying e pubs. If I buy books digitally for instance, it's like that gives me the right to like have that book. Like I have the full file You can't just take it away and like I'm not buying on Kindle anymore. So Amazon can't just change the book cover, just promote something randomly. There's a lot of things that I think it's worth us just taking a second and like looking. It's like, is this actually worth me spending my money in the way that I am right now? And sometimes the answer is yes, because it is easy or cheap or like actually, I don't care. I'm gonna read this once and never look at it again or I'm gonna to play this once and never play it again Like maybe that's okay, but I think it is just a nice moment for us to like take a step back and look at like our spending habits and like what does actually matter to you and a relationship with this item. I spent so much money on rap rock band expansions and so Are they gone? I mean, maybe they're sitting on a three hundred and sixty hard drive, which is removable and could be transferred to a a machine that does not blink red lights on the front. I have several of those Um But yeah, that's obviously a great example, right? Wh we sort of like you buy all this add on content, you obviously enjoy it and play it. But then if you ever want to break that out again and you held ono your hardware and your guitars and all of that might not have it any Seth, I want to bring you in on the Nintendo side. You just covered Amazon Prime Day and like eight of the top ten best selling video games were physical switch games. And that just seems like that's a market Nintendo is staying in Well, yeah, so the Elder Scrolls forblivian remastered Deluxe Eedition physical Edition went up for pre order when they released or excuse me when they announced the release date So june thirtieth, later that day, it went up for preordder and then one day later, like a little over twenty four it was already sold out Bestuy, It was already sold out at Amazon. Gameestop still has it. I don't know if they're going to still have it by the time this comes out tomorrow, but people are like people love. phhysical Mbe they love having a game on a cart for the Nintendo Switch two. I personally am one of those people, which is weird because I only actually have one physical Nintendo Sitch to game So maybe I'm part of the problem. But I have a large stack of Nintendo Switch games but yeah, people still want the physical media. People still want the option This is This just tells me that the PlayStation six is not going to have a disk drive at all and that we are pretty much not going to have disk drives on anything going forward. I mean, PCs g got rid of Um this drive, optal media drives forever ago. You can't even buy like a game gaming PC case that has a slot in the front for an optical disk drive. My Linux compomputer is an old like dentist Computer just because I was able to slot a for a Bu ray player in there, butice. I'm I gonna play C Sore that I got in like two thousand six then? I have I what you have that. I recently found the IC disk It's so many games on discs that died early. Yeah I used to so many boxes for the Sims Yeah, yeah Oh the big the big boxes. I used to love to go into the electronics department of the base Exchange when I was in the Air Force and it would just be like like seventy five percent of it would just be these giant PC game boxes. I didn't even have a PC at the time. I just like going in. On Switch two, I'm all digital I have to say. I mean, first first of all, it's Because I play it on the go, I don't want to carry a lot of carts And then you know this sort of in the Switch one era, my kids were younger. I bought a game and I wanted to share it with them. And there was no easy way to share games within the family, even if you had a family subscription, right? And so carts were we got everything physical, but then those Little Tks lost some of those as well and got it got to be a pain in the asset. So it wasn't despite being physical, those games were not permanent They're they're in the pocket of an airplane somewhere. Oh yeah. like what do They disappear I have high four years age of imprisonment in my swech right now Okay, nice, the physical Yeah, that's like the only physical I have. I always have animal crossing in display in all coms. Yeah. I really wanted to get Poopia, but my problem with switch physical addeditions is a lot of times for our job, like this is really unique also. for our jobs, I kind of need to play the night it comes out. Where am I gonna get that? Like how am I gonna guarantee a nine PM delivery of this game that I need to start playing That's exactly Yeah. And that's why when when they said Grand Theft Auto six was on was not going to be in the box. I'm like, well, I wouldn't have waited. to go pick it up in the store. I want to preload it and play it the moment it comes out Also Poopo is the rare like Nintendo published game that's on a game key card, since it's co published with the Pokemon company. didn't have It's not a full physical release, which is interesting. Exactly. So I was like,, I'll just buy dip away. Yeah. From those go ahead I was gonna say another kind of like, Bummer about this whole move to digital at this time right now is how much storage costs Right now you can get a two hundred and fifty six gigabyte card for your switch to for do thirty nine dollars on sale. The one that was thirty nine dollars on sale During Prime dayay is now ninety nine dollars. And like the one terabyte PS five hard drive SSDs that used to, you know You could get those for like, there was a time when they were Dirt cheap Pice fell and now those are like two hundred, three hundred, four hundred dollars. And so now we are making a move to all digital at the same time that The digital storage is four or five times as expensive as it was and it's only getting worse. So what I'm saying is hold on to what you have now Hold on to it dearly because you're going be playing these systems for a long time. Yeah.. And I look I think the nobody's argument is Digital is not convenient and great, but it's like, yeah, it's susceptible to all these other things, including ownership rights, but also you're absolutely right. storage is so expensive right now Um, and Chip setets in general, we re see memory, we've seeing that with with the console pricing, right The move to the MicroSD expxpress on Switch two is costlier and it has resulted. I only have the two hundred and fifty six one that Nintendo sold on launch today. and I am already in that like game of reorganizing the suitcase all the time I to install something new and I have to delete something old. and God, but I like having all these things installed to just jump into. It's just like on PlayStation Xbox. It's a pain Higher tier ones are just so expensive right now. so They should make it like the resident Evil suitcase with the gam ty shapes and you have to su back time. Yeah. Yeah. ye. Yeah, like the PlayStation one memory card interface, that was great. H the icons of your games running around games.. That's so cute. Yeah.. I didn't have a PlayStation one. That's cool. Oh But if you are a Nintendo fan and you love collecting physical, I wouldn't worry about it for Nintendo. I think that this is a number I wantna bring in is that every quarter, physical versus digital sales on Nintendo is still fifty, fifty. I mean, it ebbs and flows a little sometimes'sty two hundred forty eight or a little under or whatever. But essentially, if you draw it all out, it's even. It's a dead split And you cannot say that even close about any other platform. So Nintendo remains committed to this and the audience responds to this. And also when I look at it from the PlayStation and Xbox side, like they are gearing up for their next generation of consoles, right? Project Helix and PlayStation six. And so PlayStation a couple years presumably ahead of PS six they're like, hey, we're going to be done with physical just so you know Nintendo I don't know, we're eight plus years out from a new switch probably. I think the Switch two is going to be their longest lasting console ever, just the way that the market is right now. And they've already committed to having a cartridge slot on here and releasing cartridges for this platform. They changed their strategy a little bit, right? Game key cards we've talked about, the games not on the cartridge, but you can still lend that game. you can still sell that game back to a used game store. And then sure, physical games are a little more expensive for the first party releases, ten dollars ten more in most cases right now, but they still exist. And I don't think they're going anywhere for at least I don't know, eight to ten years. And I think that could even go beyond that. Japan also has a huge physical media market. So I think it's safe for the time being I agree But I think if storage if storage SD card cost had come down I could have seen Nintendo doing an all digital console at a cheaper price point. But right now it just doesn't make sense. Like if you packed in an SD card, you just can't bring the price down Yeah Pricing digital cheaper is nudging is what they call nudging. It's nudging people to digital future because yeah. there's I think there's lots of things they're doing to nudge you there. They're charging more for physical. They are putting ugly blocks of text on a bunch of their booxes that just make them less appealing. They're releasing game keycards that don't have the game on the cartridge. Like everyone has their breaking point somewhere. and I think they've thown a lot of people' this generation, but a lot of people are going to hang on forever as long as they can Yeah. Locks I broke this general teams And yeah Yeah A lot of it was just for the same reason that Miranda was saying like this job, like I review games, we get those games digitally. and so I'm not going to have this weird half and half split. So I just go all digital. But if I weren't in this job, I think still might have been the generation that broke me where I went all digital just because it's better now on Nintendo than it used to be likeike Par was saying, like used to be if you lost your three D S, you lost all one hundred and fifty games you had loaded on it and they're gone forever.. But now it's much better than that with a Nintendo account. Yeah they used to store saves, right? Like let's not forget cartridge history. Parts do a lot more than just hold the game code Save some rumboldt. Remember rumble carts? Yes. That's why I'm physical for the one in every two thousands Rumles that rumbles. Make I ball. Yeah. cool. Well let's move on to and talk about rhythm Heaven groove, which you cant get physically for thirty ninellars ninety nine cents now. It's out Miranda, we've been playing a lot of it. What do you think? It's fantastic. W you it a nine I completely agree. It is just a delight. I think I mean, the last time I really played with them Heaven, which is The first game, which means I missed games because you know, when you're younger, you don't You don't get every game, but I playached so much of that first game and loved it. Some history on my end. I did play clarinet for like ten years or something. So I'm like a band kid and like writing band Oh yeah Oh yeah. me too. Yeah. Oh yeah. We have to exchange stories about that sometime. I want to know about Y stuff sureure. really into music and just genuinely musically inclined. Rhythm games always speak to me and Rhythm heaven is so unique in how it approaches rhythm games because it's not giving you like a line that shows you what you need to be do. L you need to be part of this animation and really feel that flow. and it's so ool and how it rewards you for getting through it and also how it penalizes you to. Like it's not so harsh of being like, wow Awful. I's take Everyone's like, H, you just did something that's not right. but it's okay. like you're okay, You keep going. And so I think in that it just makes it so easy to like dive in and keep practicing and getting better and better and like also just enjoying not only the great music that it has, but also the animations because they are so cute and so weird. Like the suations are so weird Logan, what have you thought about it so far Oh, love it. Yeah, yeah, you echoed a lot of what I was just about to say, which is I agree. I was a band kid. I I still play music. I'm learning piano right now and just like I love this game. I adore this game. It's perfect. And I agree with the nine also on IGN. And it's just so funny. And like you were saying, there isn't, it's not a guitar hero where it's very obvious tracks, notes down a track It is you got to pay attention and what's so cool about Rhythm Heaven is you can play the whole game with eyes closed. Like it's all sounduse. You don't need to look at it at all, which is like sometimes if you're struggling Look away and just listen to it It's better, right? Yeah, so I'm actually working on a guide for this, which's like loose, right? Like how do you guide rhythm heaven? Like leararn how toress A at the right time. Be in the rhythm. I guess I could write out the music if that were a thing, but that would be terrible But yeah, like one of the tips I have is like for certain things, especially if jumping is involved. I like do not look at the obstacle coming. just look at a different point on the screen because if you try to because I think it's like innate that we kind of try to time jumping, right? Like you kind of have a vague Yes, it does not work that way in this game. Like I think even in the first like song they give you they try to prove that point. It's like it's really hard if you're just trying to look at it and jump at the right time I think it's really clever. Yeah, the tutorial, they actually tilt the camera in a way that's really hard to see how to line up the jum. It's this the tutorial with a hoop ring now on.. So they deliberately make set it up for you to fail and go like, Ah, did we learn something? You're supposed to listen to the music, right? Yeah Yeah Somet It's so smart in those ways and I also really enjoy how it's not trying to teach you music either or like the technicalities of these rhythms that you're supposed to be playing along to. It's just like play along with the song and like kind of figure it out as you go. So because I do know some stuff, I use some like like music techniques or just like rhythms that I can count out that help me like lead into stuff But you don't need that. Like you can totally just learn it by learning the song and learning the actions that apply to what you're playing. One other thing I've really enjoyed about it is how you need to be implying this. So like you said, you can just like listen to it, right? But you have to be very attentive, I think, if you want to get like the best scores. So it goes through a few like The one where that really matters is Oh, Id haven't gotten one. I think I'm about to get to it though. Nice. It like good is just like the you did good enough, you can move on to the next thing. There's really good, which is just like you're getting there. You're almost to the point we need you to be. And then Aesome is what gives you the medal. so the medal unlocks different things as you collect more of them. And then there's perfect. So awesome is not perfect. If you get awesome, that does not mean that you necessarily perfected your run. You might have, but you might not have. And so there is this like one challenge you get where it's like, hey You have three hearts on this one that you do really well on You can go get perfect if you want and we'll get you something for it. And it's like such a cool like Also kind of threatening challenge. It's like, o. I gotta lock in. and then I'll be like doing it and then I'll just feel my mind start wandering and like, oh, I should write this for the guide or did I tell someone this And like you know, but then you stumble and you lose your perfect and just drop the pudding on the conveyor belt or whatever weird thing happens. the pding And it's such a nice way to like really like focus in on something and like clear your mind. Like it's like meditative in that way where it's just so hyper focused on like get everything else out And so if anything, in addition to it just being fun and goofy, it's helped me, I think brain haide, you know, it's like just retraining to just for three minutes, whatever it is Really focus on this thing. Don't do d. That's what I was exactly going to say for me, it's like you do enter a flow state and like I feel like that's why it's called like rhythm heaven. Like you enter you enter this part of your mind that you're only in when you're playing a game like this because I kind of like turn my brain off a little bit and just like react and just do it and it totally feels like you're in the flow and it even scores you based on how good it thinks your flow is. and it's just Extremely satisfying, but then you're also like trying not to laugh at some of these ridiculous things that are happening. Like there's one game, I think it's called the A game And it's spelling out words on the screen and it's like it's tea and it's cocoa and it's soda. and you have to hit A when the A crosses the center of the screen. And then if you get it right, it shows a stock image of somebody enjoying tea or cocoa or soda. it's just like they pulled this from yeah, they pulled it from likeet images. Like these are just hilarious. It's like, why is this in here? Everything else is cartoony and hand drawn. But then there's these real live action people just like really enjoying their tea. It's just so funny it's just so Nintendo. Like this is just as Nintendo as it gets Oh yeah, like this is like what I love so much about Nintendo how goofy and just fun it can be. And I think we don't always get that in a lot of games where that's fair, right? We want that variety, but we also want the variety of this goofy and fun. And I sometimes just really crave that and it's so easy to hop into this Dobeit perfect something, then move on and go play a different game. And I think that's what's nice about this too. and it being the lower price point is like you can just hop in, play for a little bit and then go do about your day Yeah, and you mentioned it a little bit going for perfects and things. I think it does that really good Nintendo thing. you can just get through this, it's pretty easy. Like if you're kind of mediocre at keeping the rhythm, you can still pass the levels and get a poor score. or you can be like what I'm doing, I'm gonna to get a medal on every level. I'm doing all the perfect challenges as they come up and trying to beat them and trying to one hundred percent this game and it's just' super fun. And then there's the remixes at the end of each stage where it combines the four games into one with this unified song and you have to remember the controls because as you get later on, sometimes you hit left to break your car, but sometimes you hit down to save the pudding from landing on the conveyor belt or whatever. And so you have to constantly be flipping buttons like just within seconds. And it's so satisfying when you pull it off. And then Like you said, it's not super punishing when you lose, you just get a little bit of a glare from the guy next to you or something. It's so great. I highly recommend this game if you're looking for something just light and fun to play this summer. The facial expressions are the best. like all the characters, how they react is so good U Lan, have you gotten any perfects yet Yes, I got I've gotten a few. I got a perfect on the one where you squish the marbles with your thumb that are that are dropping off the belt. Yeah, haveave you gotten any I have gotten one so far. I haven't played as much as I'd like, but I got one on the crab Oh nice passassy. Nice. I like that one Have you mess with a multiplayer at all? No, not yet. I'm gonna try to bully my partner into playing with me, though Yeah, you should. it is super fun. There's cooperative and competitive games. One of them that's a co op game is set up like this DragonQuest RPG combat where it's four tennis players who are lined up. That's your party. and these enemies are approaching from the background to the foreground and you have to serve tennis balls at them to hit them and kill them and you're just taking turns who's serving That one's super fun. And then there's competitive games too. Still my favorite is the one that was in the preview, which was the cake time one where you are counting down ten seconds until you grab the cake off the table. And whoever is the closest hundredths of a second to the correct timing to when it hits zero, gets the cake. Everyone else falls out of their chair onto the ground I got to play some harder difficulties of this one and it slows down the tempo dramatically. It's like fifty beats a minute. It's so slow. Oh my God And then the timer disappears. And so you're trying to count in your head. and I'm like subdividing into sixteenth notes to try and like keep on beat. And my wife's trying to play too. and she's not really a musician show. She's like, how are you doing this? How are you counting that slow? And I'm like, I'm not, I'm counting really fast Yeah, it's just it's super fun. L highly recommend the multiplliayer as well. That's great Yeah if it look like this one been turned into a mass problem again. always. Yeah. The music is m. So much of mususe is, man Now I just I just bought it while you guys were' mean I love I forgot I forgot that it was out today. I knew I just whatever. so I've been wanting to get this game. was ye. it's like I had it installed and I literally was able to play for fifteen minutes and then I had to go into this tiny room . One thing I'll say, if if you're listening at home and you want to play this, this is on Switch one and Switch two. It does have a nice little resolution patch on Switch two, so it doesn' it doesn't look b. But I'm playing this on my Switch light because I just think that that's the way to play this game is right here. There it is. It's in Snd mode. Yeah, because Rhythm is a handheld game to me. I love Mga Mix. That's my favorite one It feels a little weird to me on the huge four K TV. L it's a very intimate game to me There's ways to calibrate your TV too for the latency because like obviously if you're playing it plugged in, like it's going like the timing is so important on this game. So there are ways to optimize that But I do think it is still just better in your hands. if you can and held This one's crazy. I don't I don't this it's very. Yeah. This one don't look. Just look away. Yeah. Just look away. this is one though I was like, I need to practice this, but looking away. Do Do you have a favorite game that you've played so far U I need to look at what it was called, but it's the one with the lightightning and the little alien guys that are dancing. I love that song. It's called lightight Yeah, just lightightning Bolting And it's just so good too. veryer very pop. Yeah. Yeah. The music is fantastic. The creatures are so cute. I also love Alien alphabet. Oh yeah you're talking to the alien? Yeah talking to the aliens. Yeah. They're so charming I don't know. I think I've noticed too that whatever is happening with the deev team, they have an adversarial relationship with the sky. Be a lot of the things that are mean or evil are like clouds or the moon or like the wind It's a heaven Yeah I It's all about the heaven. The Heavenens, yeah That' make I was gonna shout out the sneezy moon, which I think is the funniest. You're playing as like these little ghosts who are hiding behind a fence and you have to sneak by a gap in the fence, but you can only sneak by when the moon is sneezing. And so it's like, a chew And you go on the chew. And it's so great. And then it has like three different sneeze patterns you have to learn. So just super fun. They're all the same, right? Like all the games are the same call in response with the A button But just the different settings and patterns are really, really fun to learn Mhm. I think the only thing I don't like is that The tutorials are sometimes longer than the mini game themselves. Like they're really long. sometimes if you want to like replay one, it's like, a what is this button? There's no way to just pause and look at the controls. it's like you have to either re watchatch the tutorial or just mash the buttons around until you figure it out and then restart it. So I wish I could just pause and I was like, A to do this, down to do this, but I think it's tutorialization is a little off Yeah, I agree with that. Sometimes the longer tutorials make sense when it's what would be considered like a more complicated rhythm or if they're syncopation. Like I notice that's like the one they really lean into. It's like, oh there's sycopatation. We're going gonna you do this twenty times and then go back to like regular sefr. I'm pretty sure they found the testing that peopleople don't know what that means and like it is intentionally off And so I think That's sometimes why I do agree if I could just have a quick Here's what these do. L if there are multiple prompts or like you need to hold this, That would be nice. So I can just skip the tutorial and go right into it That's pretty much it. Otherwise I love everything else about this game. So check it out Rhythm Heaven Groove out now on Switch one and Switch two I want to talk about the last game here kind of the trio games we're talking about today, which is Star Fox. Parent Seth I know you've both been playing a lot and Seth, you texted me and said you have a lot to say about Star Fox? I can't believe how much I love Star Fox. L I knew I was going to enjoy it, but I' just It's not even just the game. I can't explain it. I love the the universe that it's setting up. I love the characters, how they're Not really that fleshed out or like there's there's not a lot there for them, but it's enough for the game that it works so well that I kind of want to see them in more adventures. We talked a little bit last time how like I want to see them in like comics and you know, like an animated series or something like that I want to see them on a serereal box. every I want to see a special edition Baha blast with each character with a code underneath to give them Baha blast in the game. No, I just I'm I'm playing this in a way that I haven't played. I mean, it's intental. That's how it's designed, but I can't remember the last time I played a game That was like this where you beat it fairly straightforward and then now you have to go back and you make choices and now you have the challenge modes. tryrying to get the metedals is a lot harder than I thought. The first mission where you have to get one hundred and fifty Hits and I ended up the closest I got for a long time was one hundred and forty nine And that was that stood for a very long time until I started realize, oh no, don't be an idiot. likeike hold on a second. Wait till those, you know, ships cross over and then you're going to get a five hit. and then you're going I didn't know bombs counted as hits. I also didn't know whatever I am enjoying this game so very much. I love it for so many reasons. I also and sort of like you're saying with rhythm Heaven words it's like This can be a bite size game. You can just sit down and play a level in a few minutes, ten minutes and then just go do something else. or you can do like a challenge and try that out at just a few levels orr you could just play through the whole game if you want to And that's fun too. I really liked. I don't want to spoil it or anything. U think it was the true ending, but I'm okay. I would not be surprised if there are like two other true endings No it's just one, but you'd know because the non true ending And was. Yeah. Okaykay. But then there's also stuff that I recognize from like the original Star Fuckx on Super Nintendo especially in the minefield, there's like circles of mindes and I've been passing through them, but then I'll miss one and I haven't gone back and seen what that does Yet. So I just yeah, I I am loving this game. I'm having so much fun with it It's so much better than I thought I was or I'm liking it so much more than I was expecting I was going to like it. And I really love I love the character design. I think it's wonderful. Me too. And yeah, this I I mean, I got to play T more hours at least rightight now, this might be like a nine for me. This might be my I think I like Picopia better. I don't know, this This is one of my favorite Nintendo games in a very, very long time It's I think it's just scratching an itch for a lot of people. Like this is a very unique style of game. It's very old fashioned in a lot of ways, but I think it's just really hitting at the right time It's so beautiful too. Oh my Godd P, what do you think I know we've talked about this game a ton. I know you love it too Let me before I tell you how much I like it, I'll just give a tip for Seth, if you do the challenges use mouse mouse aiming because some of the challengge is really tough. likeike we saw the me the meteteo boss you're supposed to only hit the yellow blanking lights and if you hit the shield The challenge is lost with most controls. you can do much better aiming Um, so so def definitely do that. Um is really good. I mean, like Valin Studios did such a nice job updating the visuals but also filling in the gaps between the missions. Like I felt like the original game was there were these levels on on, you know, these planets on a map and a sun and meet asteroid fie. An like you're moving through and you're sort of piecing together the story, but it felt very loose, right? You go like, oh yeah, they were able to approach Venom from a different side. Now it's actually all acted out and explained and not to the point where they they're over explaining it, but it's actually building a mini movie every time you play those through the game. The characters are charming. They're, you know, they're sort of unapologetically mercenary. They're like the guns for hire, right? Like they're doing this Obviously for the good of animal kind, but in the end they it's also payday for them And that's like It's really well done. There's this underlying homage to all science fiction movies, which is was in the original game that they luckily replicated here. you get refferences to Star Trek, The search for Slippy is one of the chapters. The enemy in this level is Vjer says, I must meet the creators from Star Trek Motion Picture not like this is what Star Wolf says when you take him out like in the Matrix. There's Star Wars lines. I have a bad feeling about this. All of this stuff is still in here and it feels it's just It just feels like a love letter to science fiction and especially sort of Starship comombat The most striking thing to me is how good it feels now Like I just just played through Starfk sixty four. This is super snappy. The controls are fantastic. The landmaster feels good Even the submarine is tolerable now, which was was and is the worst level in the game, of course Soness. I mean, we're not doing it justice here because it's so highly compressed when you see it in motion on YouTV, it's just gorgeous, right? Arvins To anybody who's not played this, imagine this is basically how you do Galagi in three D. It's an arcade game with sort of you know like where eventually you run out of things to do and then you can replay it. But it's like formations of enemies. and it's not just about surviving, it's how you clear them all And so through the lock on shots and the you know, knowing where the enemies spawn and what sort of patterns they take you can get better and better at this game. And the attraction is not learn the story and you're done with it. It's to replay, get better and better. And I think the challenge mode and obviously the meddal targets like perf are perfectly in sync with that game I mean, that's how I used to play the original and that wasn't even part, you know, it wasn't programmed into the game. I would just play that game over and over and over again to try to get a little bit better, to try to find, you know, some other weird secret in there. and now they've, you know, they formalized it. And It's exactly for me. And in a way, it's like I'm always torn between is it smart or is it not? Some of the secrets were buried deep in the original game and you felt so awesome for discovering hidden passage, flying in formation or doing a loop in a certain spot and getting an extra life, right? Like these things were not known to most players and you stumbled upon them or your friend told you about Now it is actually baked into the challenge modes. Now granted, you have to first unlock the challenges. So it's not like you have it from the get go. There might still be that discovery And it's a remake of an old game and all that information is out there. But yeah, that's my one sort of I'm still not sure if I like it I think it's smart because I've been thinking about that angle of it a lot. I think it extends beyond the challenge mode. It's to the whole game. L they tell you exactly in the game how to accomplish the alternate routes. And I was a little bit on that too at first. But the more I've sat with it, I just think it is reframed Star Fox sixty four as something with mystery to be like stumbled upon and discovered. and then you tell your friend at school to This exist, peopleeople will just look up how to do something in five seconds. So instead, we'll focus this game on completion. and it is about objectives and missions and checkboxes. And I think that's a smart R way to rework a short game that doesn't have a lot of mystery surrounding it anymore. and be like, no, do everything. H's everything you can do. Go do it. It's in front of you. I think it it's a really interesting take, I think on a remake And it values your time a little bit more because obviously when you when you finish a mission one path, you can't just go back now and do the other path. You have to do it on the next playthrough. And so it values your time a little bit more. I appreciate things like when Star Wolf shows up, they're like, hey, we upgraded our shields You know, we've got a bomb shield now, right? Like that's sort of stuff being more explicit, I think is actually good too Yes, I mean. I always forget how many cool levels are in this game. Like when I replayed, I'm like, Oh I forgot about Solar, you know I would say too having that optional stuff baked in is maybe also to signal to newer folks that that that's a thing you should be doing. because I think if you are a kid, you saw Star Fox in the Mario movie, you're like, oh, I can't wait to play this. You play it. And then you're like, oh, wait, it's over. That was fast when you've been playing, you know like Robox and Fortnite and other things that just go on forever And then I think having that of lead into, oh, you do actually you should be playing this again. kindind of confirms, oh, no, but you're not actually done. like you should go back. Yeah. And so I think that's just maybe to accimate people who haven't played some of these more arcade based games. And like that yeah, mastery is part of it. You should be replaying this because it is fun and there are things to discover. And so I think that's just the way that they've formatted it. At least that's been my read on it. Yeah, no, I think that's totally true, which is why I think a lot of the discourse being around, Oh, fifty dollars for a seventy five minute game. I'm like, that's just so missing the point. L that is just absolutely. It's not just is It's like ye Yeah think of Pacman Championship edition, right? Like it's a game that you replay because you want to get you want to get your points up and you want to do better, that's actually a time capped game, right where you're supposed to get to a high score within a set time frame This is a little bit different because different because like The the course you take can be very deliberate. If you're great at the game you can always take the path you want. but once in a while, you're just not fast enough to beat the boss and flippy get slippy gets flipped away and you' being derouted to a different planet and like Um And so it is like it's not always predictable what course you take through it. Sometimes I forget, honestly, I'm like, oh, I'm trying to go to Titania and then I accidentally shoot all the switches or something. I'm like, o no, you know, ye Luckily, the game is then nice and let let's you switch If you do the correct path, Yeahah you can if you do it down to the bad path. Yeah, exactly. If you do If you do mission accomplish, that's the difference. Mission and completed is You didn't do that great So which is just still so cool. And yeah, I think a lot of it's just still so fresh, like how you're if Your teammates are down, they don't talk. And so the level just feels a little hollow without them. L that's cool. you don't get a med idea. No and no medal either. I've been playing a lot of the multiplayer also and it is really fun. It's basic. There's not much to it. Like I think it's it reminds me of Nintendo World Championships NES edition when it came out, it was like the two greatest weekends ever and then everyone stopped playing it and never picked it up again. I think that's going to be Starfucks But it just feels like a game cbe battle mode, but online. L it's really, really fun and it's not super balanced. Like if you're way way down in points, they're like, here's an infinite laser and then you can get a quad kill and knock out the entire team. but it doesn't matter. And you come back at the last second. But it's just a lot of fun to play these dog fights online with friends because you just feel like crewmates. you're like, oh, there's someone on my chanail. Can you get them?ike You're talking like the Star Fox characters do in the game? it's It's super fun. And I think if you have Starfox, you've got to try it out now while it has a player base and before the players that are left get too ridiculously good that you'll never be able to beat them, now is the time to try this. It reminds me of Crimson skies, which was this Xbox one original Fatty Xbox title. We haven' we haven't seen any new games. It's owned by Microsoft the franchise which was this sort of cyber punk, not cyberpunky, the steampunky st air comombat game Um and it has that same sort of feel and fuck to it For sure. Also, I wantan to shout out a fun sixty four Easter egg at the end of the game. get you submit an invoice for how many hits you scored and then General Pepper pays you an amount of money. Multiply your number of hits by sixty four and that will equal your money, which is really fun. That's such a good detail. I never would have noticed on my own. I just saw it online L Logan and I worked on this Rgy guide on this. So if you go to IGN, we've got all those details in there and also on how to get the most hits for the medals, Seth Ground insulations don't give viewpoints Asteroids like D discovereroids do so when there are a lot of destructible asteroids, toss your balomb in the middle when there's big like on Venom onene, when there's like big hordes of enemies, they all count And then some of the free range battles, the drones in the sky actually count too. So If you don't mind the battle taking a long time, you could just rack up points and shoot the bounce Well, I'll tell you, I didn't know that the homing shot didn't work on Star Wolf. So I just thought that that I was supposed to lose to them. It If you don't, they'll just fly away and then they make fun of you. Yeah, It does it breaks them from pursuing your friends. so it works for that, but it doesn't cause damage. like You just want to You just want to rapid fire at them. Yeah, yeah Do does everyone I' way better now If you're in the beginning of a game and the boss you run into is really hard, you're always like, Oh, I'm supposed to lose here. and then you Oh no That was exactly what I thought. Yeah It happens a lot Does everyone still have time to keep going? I really I didn't ask before for the show if everyone's good. Oe people have to bounce? Oh yeah, man. three day weekend doing nothing. Oh why got I checked itself. I got so much to do. No, I do actually have time. Okay. cool. Well, we'll keep rolling then. 'Cause I want to tie this all together. We just talked about three games and we talked pretty highly about all them. Of course, we haven't played Slatoon yet, but we talked highly of the other two. So how are we you feeling about the start of Switch two's second year? We got Starfox in June, Rhythm Heaven and Slatoon in July. We know Fire Emland's coming in September, Switch Sports Resort in October, Occarin of Time and Dust Bloods are supposed to come out sometime this year. We got the Xen Blade Switch two ditions, Pkopia expxpansion Pass, which the first wave is dropping in August. So Miranda, what do you think just overall of switch two so far? I'm so happy. I'm so glad because the first few months at least, like at least it's last year's releases were such a bummer. Genally at least for me, I thought it was kind of good slow It's like, wow, this is this is really the launch you guys have and then come into this year and I have not really put my switch down for more than like a week if anything. I'm so hooked on Pokopia. I'm obviously quite stoked for Oaring of time. L It's really important one for me. Dust Bloods awesome. evenven though I haven't really stuck with Tomadaci L, that was fantastic. It was just like another like A little blip that was just a good time an eye for them heathen Honestly, they're just doing a really fantastic job and having a cool variety of games as well. And I think that's something that Nintendo always does 's just having a bunch of different kinds of things for you to dig into. So even if Poopeia is not for you, I mean maybe Starfox is or rhythm Heaven or something else Yeah, how about you for many th The release gate is big exceeded my expectations so far, right? These are it's a good mix of remakes u, you know, between between Star Fox and Oarino Time and original games Firembom obviously is the one to watch for. I'm super psyched for that one. But I feel like it's a It's a nicely balanced lineup and games that when they were initially announced, I'm like, well yeah, that could be cool. L Poopia turned out to be really, really strong. So I'm Yeah, so far so good. I love the sort of unexpected surprises like it in a rhythm heaven or getting a return of W sports basically I think it's really I think it's really good Yeah, I this is The sophomore year for the Nintendo Switch two, I think is putting a lot of playing the long game, kind of getting people used to these, you know, smaller like Starfox, everybody knows what Star Fox is who's been a Nintendo fan, but I would say that most general people have no idea, but now it's like, hey, look, there's this really fun game with these very charming characters that They'll, you know, someone who's twelve years old. Look, if this game had come out when I was twelve years old, this would be my identity to this day. I would still be like I would I would probably have like a Star Fox blog or something or YouTube channel that was all about this. But I thinks Kids, people are gonna play this game and young kids and they're going to love it and then in five years or four years or seven years when there's a new one, they're going to be like the first ones there for this big new Star Fox thing. And then you've got the like the weirder games like Rhythm heaven probably nobody would care about, but now that it's on switch two and everyone's, you know really high on switch two, it's going to be a success too. And now this is also something where people are getting used to the idea of like a weird Nintendo again, I don't The switch era was so strong, but it doesn't feel like that kind of weirdness that we had during the Game Cube and DS era in three DS area, but I feel like that's back now too. And we can do that again. And then yeah. And but I mean, the biggest news of all is the return of a hundred pin bowling in Switch Sps Resorts. coming up. It's back maybe. I think I mean, I think yeah, this is a fantastic second year. and I feel like even the Ocarina of Time remake is The hugest thing but I feel like there's something There's something more they're going to we might have to story about that a little later but ye So I know I'm sure there's something else coming too, but I think the one myiss I would highlight is that Mario Kart burned too fast And yeah, I feel like I was especially because it's shipped with a higher price point. We sort of like interpreted it as that Maybe there iss a more life servy angle to it And to be fair, they did issue updates. a new one just came out with alternate routes and stuff like that. But like I was expecting this sort of smash like sort of tune in reason there's new character packs and new new track packs coming and we haven't seen that yet. And so I dropped off so fast from Mario Karn and was a real bummer because the core game and feel is so good. I agree wholeheartedly. Like I'm still kind of angry that it was eighty dollars. I'm just like, why was that eighty dollars? it's so 's hard to want to stick around unless you're really looking for the alternate stuff. I didn't like the open role I thought it was kind of boring. Like yeah, there's stuff to fine, but I think Nintendo generally does a great job of like, there's something to mas, there's something to find We've been talkking about this this entire show. And for some reason, Mario Kart doesn't feel like it did that very well at least for my perspective. And so seeing like how much support even like Poopia is getting versus Mario Cart is like, what are you guys doing? Like Mario Cart iss huge and like They just it just kind of feels like a side note, which is so strange I think, um I have a lot of thoughts Mio Kard. I actually wrote some notes Mario Cart for this episode So a beautifulg. Thank you for. Yeah So Mario Cartard is just get to new update. I got two new knockout tour rallies. Finally, that was one of my biggest complaints about the game. There's only eight different races to play knockout tour on. So now there's ten and they're going to add six more. So they they're doubling it from eight to sixteen over the next several months. We'll probably be getting every time they update the game, which is roughly once a month. now that we're a year beyond, I'm so convinced. and this is just my speculation and me reading between some lines. I think the swwitch two was delayed for Mario Kart. I've thought this for a while. I think Mario Kart was not ready and they kept pushing this console back. and I think Mario Kart barely acceptably ready when it came out and they've spent the last year bringing it to maybe where it should have been launch. I love Mario Cart World. Like I say that I play this game every week. I'm like one hundred sixty hours in Marioart World. Like I' a Mario Cart. get your money'sth. Exact yeah, fifty cents an hour. So I just look at all the updates they've made, and I just wrote a little bit history of M Kart World Udates last July, so like a year ago, they started to update it with some of the things that were missing from the base game. Like you couldn't even pick who you spectated online. So if you got knocked out of a race, you just watch a stranger instead of your friend. It was silly. they fixed that In September, they made it so you could play knockout tour with your friends online, which you couldn't do at launch. They added a better free room map for tracking collectibles. They made unlocking characters better than it was at launch. In December, they added custom items, which were just missing at launch. and they'd been part of eight for years at that point. They made better lobby systems for grouping up with friends They changed the layout of eight of their little intermission tracks that were boring and they made them better. They added team races to knockout tour. They added bomb blast to battle mode. Now they're havinging rallies like they have been patching this game together over the last year. I have no doubt your big huge course update is going to come. I just think they're still getting this game to where they wanted it to be in one point zero And it's fair. I think I definitely think they're going to play the long game. if you look at Nintendo sales history on games like Mario Kart, they sell forever, right? Like they always Mario Kart will be one of their top selling games in three years for the Switch two And I think That means they they will play the long game Um I just I just wanted to keep playing and I sort of dropped off it. m Obviously that's not everybody It coincided with my kids moving out of my house too, so maybe that has something to do with it. But I can't wait to see what happens when we get track packs and please know Mario Cartour tracks Trackpack, let's go That's what I. No boring city courses U And I also wonder if Mario Kart World wasn't the best pick for a launch game. I wonder if they should have flipped Donkey Kong Bonanza and Mario Kart World because I feel like at launch people want that big meaty single player adventure that they can track everything down and find everything. And I think Bonanza was that. And I think Mario Kart being positioned as the launch game A lot of people were like, well, I'm going to get a lot out of this open world. It's the only game on Switch two. It's this big single player thing. And then it's just not. L how you engage with this is still how you've engaged with every Mario Kart. So I honestly think most people's visions of this game are clouded by the fact that it was the first Switch two game. so they thought that it was going be something it didn't being and that the open world is not good. likeike I one hundred percent agree free room is not a good mode. But I just think if it come out a month after after everyone had played Donkey Kong and switched to it settled, I think people would talk generally more positively about Mario Cart, well, they're like, oh, that was a fun Mario cart rather than I dropped off really fast. because doesn't everyone s kind of drop off Mario Kart, except the hardcore. Except for you.cept for Ecept for the Logans. Yeah. look, it is they're trying to do right by their audience. It is the top selling game R yeah. U We'll get I'm sure we'll get smmash eventually We get now weSports that used to be the top selling game on the old console Hey, we're getting Donkey Kong bananza as a pack in. if you buy the's right the choose your own game bundle and you choose that as your game I know it's such a good trree to of love games in that It is Yeah, it is really and like people are going crazy for that choose your game bundle. It's like huge even though it's it's You only really save money if you buy Mario Kart World. otherwise you are only saving like ten dollars. But yeah, it's it's still so super pot. It's crazy to me how popular it is. and I think Part of it's the obviously the price change going up. eptember But I mean, hey, look fififty bucks. That's not that big of a deal, when you compare it to I don't know how much does the Xbox cost now? two thousand eight hundred dollars for Yeah. I don't w to talkag that it on to sleep, but alsoes. That's like listen guys I don't want to talk about Xbox right now. Okay. We'll keep it going. Hey, Well, we'll say doesn't wantan to talk about Xbox right now. so Yeahah, it's chaos. But I will say, I know how many people bought or I know people in my life who bought a switch to just for Pkopia. so that packaging is. Yeah makes sense. It's the best. That's what I tell everybody get, getet Pkopia It's the best one Yeah It's really exciting for me. like we're still at the start of this new system's life cycle. When you think about the games we haven't gotten yet, right? We haven't gotten original Mario and original Zelda, we haven't gotten the new Sash. Like it's there's just so much life left in this thing and it's going be really cool to see. Yeah, And I think they're doing a really good job in the meantime of everyone's dealing with the realities that these mainline games are taking longer to put out. So how do you deal with that? And Nintendo was like, here's a bunch of like smaller fifty dollars games, Starfox and rememake and Splatoon, which uses a lot of the same enemies and stuff, but there's a new spin on it. Like I think they're doing a really, really nice job when you still have a game almost every month, I cannot find much to complain about in this life. I know it's really okay with an occarina of time remake, man. Oh yeah honestly,'m still so impressed that they've managed the game a month thing for so long. they've just kept kept rolling. and that's always makes me wonder I'm like, well If it's a game of mononth, what are they gonna do in November What are they going to put up against? I think it's Zlda. I think it's going to be Zelda That is like such. Pure chaos levels. I know But also, I think it could be too Yeah. I think it's got to be. I don't know what else you put up there. And I think it'll be the week before. like they won't go week to week with it, but I know it'll be dangerous or November game. At that point, do just do it. Yeah Do it. Yeah. cool. Well, just real quick, I won't spend too long on this. I just want to talk about those new knockout tours they added because they're so cool. And I just saw some people complaining online like, oh, these are the roads we already know. But like knockout Tour continues to be like the best addition Mario Kart's ever made. It is so awesome. And what's just great about playing knockout tour online is it's yeah, a lot of the roads are straight Every single one has a different optimal strategy of when should you get items? when should you hang back? which shortcuts should you take? And then it's so many mind games with twenty three down to four other racers of when do you make your move? And you're just strategizing constantly And so yeah, it's just like this road from one track to another that in free Rom would be like,h, whatever. But when you've got the competition on the track with you and you see what other people are going for and you see, I'm going to hold on to my lightning until all seven other people cross the items. And then I'm going to use it and then I'm going to lead this segment like it's awesome. And so getting eight more of those to kind of learn those strategies It' super fun. And I think a lot of people that dropped off Mario Kart, I think you've got more to learn. I think you could go back and squeeze a lot more out of these races That's just me. that's just a guy with one hundred and sixty hours in Mario Cartw. I don't know have to finish Mioong sixty four. No, sure. Yeah. ye I know every night got. I'm building too much a pooobia right now today I'm building a monorail system, so the next one like. Wow, That's cool. Every night when I'm playing something on Switch and I see a Pair, Nintendo sixty four cllassics. my God, he's playing Donkey sixty four. There are I have six hundred seventy two purple bananas to collect Oh God, that you like screw that game so much, man It makes me so mad We've got one topic left and I'm going to issue a bit of a spoiler warning here. This is feedback I got from some people in the NVC community about the topic of leaks, right? Nintendo is a leaky ship right now and a lot of stuff comes out. We're going to talk about it on the show because I feel like we should for the people that do want to know this stuff. But if you don't want to know about a potentially major first party Nintendo game that leaked this week Go awaya now, Leave the show and we'll talk to you next week Right now, here we go, full spoilers out there. We're going to talk about a potential leak for a new metroid And it's a listing appeared. called Metroid Ravenous as apparentlych to. O Ravenous. like Raven be R Metroid Dread. That's so Raven, yeah This apparently surfaced within Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public seecurity system. This was like an age rating thing. Like Nintendo allegedly submitted forty minutes or so of footage to be ridated by the Brazilian board. and the production year was listed as twenty twenty six. We don't know if that meanans is coming out this year, if it's just like this is when they produced what they're showing to them, you know, No other information on the game I can't help but think this is legit the way that this service got taken down like instantly after people grabbed screenshots of it. And Par, I have to think this is a Mercury steam led Metroid Dread follow up That's gota be the two D Mercury steam. Squel to dread. Like and and'm I'm with you. I believe this is real because otherwise they wouldn't have squirreled away the information plus the source of the information is like something that, you know, people people create fake like, oh, I took this you know here's like photo leaks of a Nintendo presentation. This is very different. This is such an obscure thing for a Brazilian ratings agency m to be the source of the leak that it must be real. Islam I'm so happy. like I'm just I'm so excited that this was not that Dread was not the end of two D Metroid because it was so very, very good Mhm. Yeah, Seth I know you love Dread too Oh yeah, Dred. I mean, I had forgotten that this leak. that's I've had a busy week But yeah, two D metetroid is I'm starting to realize that maybe Metroid Prime The original was the only good three D Metroid. But if you ever replay to, you'll notice it's very Yeah, T was amazing I wish I could. I wish I could go back and replay it, but I can't because I don't own it anymore. it'll be re Dread was so damn good and I was so surprised at how like my willingness to play it because it did get so hard and it did require such precision timing to beat the bosses and normally, I just' like, well, this isn't This isn't for me. That's why I don't like souls because you have to just really good and I end up getting frustrated and I don't want to spend the time, but this one I just I Brave gettinget that sort of like level of get good to to be able to beat that and like Wonderful. I love all two D Metroid Vanas and so a new one that's actually Metroid like yeah, let's let's freakaking go This was an OLE screen showcase and it's like doesn't do it justice again. likeike when you boooted up on a Sitch OLED is incredible looking. It's so pretty. It's like completely smooth and like the brightness there The HDR and the colors pop so much I'm almost, you know, almost sad to see to see this done on a switch to screen because it's not as vibrant But on a television, I can't I can't wait to see what Mercury Steam does with the extra horsepower.ike probably it's going to be like particle craziness of like spores and stuff floating around This was a this was a break So well, I don't know if You know this pair, I have OLA TV now I I might go back into Yes Inct getting one I really wont. If you could get if you buy an OLED TV, I went and tried to watch TV on our like our bedroom TV, which is an LED and it was disgusted. That's the problem is I feel like it will ruin every other screen. will one hundred percent will Dude. What do you see an OLED? I got the Samsung S eighty five F seventy seven inch. I got it with a veteran's discount and then it went on sale for a hundred dollars cheaper a week later. but still. nice. an LZ M five I have an from like twenty twenty and it's still going strong. It looks phenomenal still. like ye. wouldouldn't trade a different. Sorry Totally worthwhile investment. Yeah L good peer pressure. I know, I know. We'll see. Marianity thoughts I metetroid Gay! That's the most proereanda Answry I've ever heard. That's wonder. It's been a tough time for Metroidvania as like, you know, Ubi's Prince of Persia didn't do as well. such a shame. You know, and I feel like The sort of excitement over the original Hollow Kights, like it died down really fast for the sequel two. Um I'm curious if maybe the genre is a little bit of a The dldroms arery if itits Maybe maybe I'm just not seeing everything. But I would sincerely hope that people who haven't played the first one Just download it. Meaning direct. Yeah Yeah, there's still a lot of different metroid veinas com come out, especially like on steam, like indie ones. So I think there's still like interest in it for sure, but just not mean as explosive, I think. there is a lot The Prince of Persia not selling is just complete injustice. That was a fantastic game too Yeah, I actually I prefer it slightly to dread. actually. I like it I do. I really like both. I think it's Oh h. I like them both. Yeah I like those pwth Yeah. ye Well, I think foration went on a little long, a little bit long. Yeah agree eight hours in and out, which is. And I had some game breaking bugs. There was like this parrot that would just never come that was supposed to fly in and so ye pissed at it. But no, the game was really good. And then we're getting real Castlevania, obviously too. So it's not like the genre is dead. It's just I'm wondering if maybe there's so many games that they don't feel quite as special anymore when they come out often U But I'm all in for a showdown with Mr. Raven Beak as newly upgraded Samus. Let's say no more Yes, newly upgraded Samusu, I mean, I look at that title of Ravenist and I can't help but think it's going to be some loop of absorbing energy and then expelling that energy in some way. It's got to be that's got to be what they're doing. This is yeah. It's no longer about finding suit upgrades. It's organic upgrades that are being stolen from the enemies or something like that. Yeah, like fusion, but further step f in that withithout ammibas Yeah, sure. Yeah, but I can't wait. And I hope that I hope that if this is real and everything we think it is, I hope this benefits from their new variable pricing. It is a forty ninellars ninety nine game like Starfox and E Splatoon Raiders because Dred was sixty and I think people who like love Hollow Knight, that's twenty dollars, I think you got to lower that price point for a two D game like this to get more people in and really establish this series. Drered did a great job, sold over three million you got to just keep growing that But you know what this means? Like if there's an H rating overseas that means a this year. It had, I would think so. Why would they submit for an age ring? ESRB like all of these Peggy, they always have leaks. Somebody always publishes something too early. And so publishers submit these things pretty late, usually The fact that Brazil got this means this is got to be next quarter There's there's a non zero chance it's next month. They announced Star Fox like forty five days before it came out. Like they could do that with this I don't know if they will, but they don't have an August game right now. Like that month is empty. and ye maybe the Dustblood surprise drops or something, but they're doing some summer test of that game. So we'll see. But we would be very excited for Metroid six that would be a Metroid Vania unlike Prime four, which really wasn't a game I still like, but the Metroid community really seems to hate, so it wouldd be nice to get Get a new one out there I think I think it'll improve with age. I think people are going to look with kindinder eyes at for in the always kind of hate the last one. and then I think it gets some reclamation later. I'm not saying it's perfect. I mean Seth had a famous rant on the show a lot of which holds extremely true. It's just yeah, there were so many expectations on this game. I'll tell you what The twenty nine doll ninety nineents Prime Day price moved some units because it was actually cheaper to buy the switch and then upgrade than it was to buy the switch too Yeah Yeah. People were just like, Hey, why not? I'll roll the dice. So, didid you ever finish this game or did you did you drop it? Nope I got T I don't want to start again. I know you like do bad with No, it's fine, I don't mind But no I just got I got frustrated and bored and I I'm yeah Yeah. I look how quarino of time just popped up on the screen I like that game. That game's very good. Yeah Yeah Well, hopefully that hopefully Metroid six Metroid Rvenous is really real and hopefully we see it very soon But that is another episode of Nintendo Voice chat in the books. We're here every Friday with audio on your favorite podcast app, a video on Spotify or the IGN Games channel on YouTube Ne week, I'm not sure what we're talking about yet but it'll be fun.
