Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. President Trump Thursday said the U. S. cancelled planned military strikes against Iran he said a peace agreement is imminent. However, he said a naval blockade will remain in effect until that agreement is finalized. When asked if negotiators have secured a deal on the possibility of Iran having a nuclear weapon, he responded yes conceptually speaking to reporters Trump insists a deal is close. We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran . And we're going to be subject to finalization of documents which should get done over the next few days and probably have a signing maybe in Europe . There's been no official confirmation from Iran the agreement is close . A man has admitted to killing Minnesota's former Democratic House Speaker and her husband last year. As Matt Sippic of Minnesota Public Radio reports the suspect Vance Belter's pled guilty Thursday, it means federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. Vince Belter pleaded guilty to murdering former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. He also admitted shooting and wounding Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Eve and trying to shoot their daughter Hope. Minnesota US attorney Dan Rosen says the plea deal calls for the fifty eight year old to serve two consecutive life sentences plus forty years. Those that would commit political violence at any level should take heed . The Department of Justice will seek and obtain the longest prison terms available for your crimes. The shootings were among several acts of extreme political violence in recent years. For NPR News, I'm Matt Sapic in Minneapolis. Stocks ended up Thursday this after President Trump canceled more strikes in Iran. NPR Stephen Bas a reports the Dao gained more than nine hundred points up nearly two percent. Mostly shrugged off the morning 's announcement from Trump that he was planning more strikes on Iran. What they didn't ignore was Trump's reversal in the afternoon canceling those strikes. Markets then followed a familiar pattern this year, jumping up after the president promised progress toward the end of the war, and futures for crude oil dropped sharply. The Nasdaq was up two point four percent by the end of the day, six hundred and forty points. The S and P five hundred was up one hundred twenty seven points. Tech and AI stocks also got a breather after a sell offs earlier this week. Chipmaker Nvidia ended the day up more than two and a half percent. Stephen Bassah, NPR News. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney says it may take a little longer to open the new Gordy Howe Bridge that connects the U. S. and Canada along a major trade route. A ribbon cutting ceremony for Friday is still on, but it's not clear when the bridge between Detroit and Windsor , Ontario will be opening for cars and trucks. The bridge is named after NHL hockey star Gordy Howe. From Washington, you're listening to NPR News . The US Supreme Court Thursday rejected a request from the state of Alabama to lift a stay of execution and executed death row inmate Jeffrey Lee. A lower court ruled earlier that Alabama's method of execution using nit rogen gas to kill the prisoner constituted cruel and unusual punishment and violated the eighth amendment. The state was seeking to get that lower court ruling vacated The US men's national soccer team plays its first game in the FIFA World Cup that'll be later tonight in Los Angeles . They'll take on Paraguay. NPR's Becky Sullivan reports. US soccer has been planning for this world cup for a long , long time. After the Americans failed to qualify for the World Cup back in twenty eighteen, they cleaned house and a new staff brought in a whole new generation of young players to develop. The twenty twenty two tournament was a first test for the young squad . They reached the round of sixteen . Now they're older. The core is in their prime and they're playing here at home. Here's midfielder Tyler Adams. This is like for me the biggest opportunity to just really grow the game, like to inspire people , to show that American players are at the level of the rest of the world.
