The Knicks’ historic sweep of Philly — May 11, 2026 — starts at 0:00
And a very good Monday morning, afternoon, evening, everyone. Joe Beningo back with you again. It's the Oda Pain Podcast, Monday, the 11th of May 2026. The Odapane Podcast brought to you by Manscaped and, of course, our good friends at Anita Discount Tire. Unbelievable. If you are a Knicks fan today, you are beside yourself with joy. The Knicks took care of business. A Mother's Day Massacre against the uh Philadelphia 76ers. They blew him out, beat him by 30 points, said a franchise record with 144 points in a playoff game in doing it. 144, 114 the final score. Unbelievable. The Brooms are out. The Knicks sweep the 76ers. Their first sweeps in sweeping the Hawks in the Eastern semi-finals in 1999. First time they've been in back -to-back conference finals since ninety-nine and two thousand. They won their seventh consecutive playoff game, which is a franchise record. And and how about this? Okay, this just shows the dominance of this basketball te am over their last seven playoff games. They have won those seven by an average of almost twenty seven points a game. I mean think about that for a second. They closed out the Atlanta Hawks with a 51-point victory. They close out the Sixers with a 30-point victory. There probably could have been even more than that if we did not get a full fourth quarter of, as the great Marv Albert would say, extended garbage time. I mean just, it's unbelievable. I I I don't I don't know what else to say. Even the championship teams, okay? The 70 and 73 championship teams never had the dominance that we have seen by this Nick team in these first two rounds of the playoffs. I mean even the two games they lost. I mean let's even look at the two games they lost to Atlanta. They lost both games by a point and they had the basketball with a chance to win in their hands see Tom Thibodeau go. And I give Tom Thibodeau along with Leon Rose all the credit for transforming this basketball team from the laughing stopper stock of professional sports into a team that's right now, let's be honest, on the brink. I understand they still got to get through the conference finals. They're on the brink of winning an NBA title here. I mean you can't tell me this team can't win 'em. You can talk about Oklahoma City until the Cows come home, and I understand Oklahoma's seven and oh in the playoffs. They're on the verge of sweeping the Lakers. They've won every game against the Lakers by double digits. I understand all of that. They're the defending champion. But you tell me the Knicks can't win a title this year. And I and I have said this before. If not, when? When ? This is by far. And in all due respect, and I've said this before in the Ewing years, and look, that team did go to two champ two to two finals, and this team hasn't been to one yet. And all due respect to Patrick and Charles Oakley and John Starks and the late great Anthony Mason and and Larry Johnson and Alan Houston and Latrell Sprewell and Marcus Canby and all those gu ys, right? From those years, and all due respect to them, right? To Pat Riley, to Jeff Van Gundy, all due respect . This team is better than those teams. Patrick Ewing never had the supporting cast that, you know, uh Jill and Brunson and company have now. I mean, every night it's a new guy, you know? That's the other thing too. It's not just the guy, you know, it's not just Brunson and Towns and and Ananobi who,'s you know been able to rest here for two games, and he can really rest now, and hopefully Cleveland and Detroit go seven games. And you know, the Knicks can get rest. Ananobi can be ready, you know, 100% healthy and ready But you know, it's not just the you know Brunson, like I said, it's not just the starting five who are all capable of going off and having big offensive nights. It's the guys off the bench. It was Landry Shamid in game three. He went five of six from the field, scored fifteen points. And it was Deuce McBride yesterday. Now he started the game in place of Ananobi. But how about him? Seven of nine from three, twenty-five points. He was what four for four in the first quarter from three to really set the tone. I mean, you gotta be kidding me. This team has about nine guys that any on any night can go off offensively and get it done. It's not just Brunson and Towns and Ananobi. It's really unbelievable . And they're very similar to the championship teams because , you know, I always said this about the the teams in the 70s. You know, the guys that the Knicks put out there, you look at the team that won the championship in nineteen seventy, right? Clyde and and Willis and the Buscher and Bradley and Barnett, every one of these guys could shoot, you know, if they had the three-point shot back then, every one of those guys could shoot threes. Cassie Russell, every one of them. Every one of them . And you look at the team that won in 73, and now you add Roe Monroe, and now you add Jerry Lucas. Everybody. And that's what this team is now. And they play defense. And like I said, even the championship teams, they never had the kind of run that this team is on right now. Seven straight wins and just a nihil ating the opposition. I mean, there's no other way to say it. Annihilating. This game was over. I mean, in the first five minutes yesterday, you know, after Deuce McBride drained yet another three, it'd give the Knicks a 20 to six lead. The game was over . It was over. It was just a Mother's Day party watching this game. I was watching this game by my daughter's house, Aaron, right? We had a family day with Mother's Day and all of that. I mean, I was just sitting back like it was a party . Gimme the broom. Let's go. Unbeliev and I thought Philly would give them some trouble, I gotta tell you. I thought this would be a long series. I thought the Knicks would win, of course. But I figured they'd win it in seven, something like that, six or seven. And they weren't even competitive, Philadelphia. Where the hell was Tyrese Maxie? I mean, he gave the Knicks all kinds of trouble two years ago when the Knicks beat him in six in the first round. I mean, Maxie was nowhere to be found. And that's because Mikhail Bridges, who really resurfaced, you know, ever since game six in the series against Atlanta, really ever since, you know, Bridges was benched. Well, he wasn't benched, but ever since that game when he had no points, I guess it was a game two, game two of the Atlanta series when they lost at home, and he had zero points. Ever since then, he's been a different player. He had twenty four points. Just look at what Mikael Bridges has done. He had twenty four points in the closeout game against Atlanta, right? Twenty four. Then he go then he goes eighteen, seventeen, twenty three in the first three games uh against Philadelphia. Yesterday he only had 12 points, but he shot six from ten and continued to you know make Tyrese fact uh Tyrese Maxie an absolute non-factor. I mean it's unbelievable. I can't say enough. I mean I I'm I'm beside myself right now as a Knicks fan. Now s look, they still got eight games to win. They still got to get through the conference finals and end the NBA finals, but I don't fear anybody. You know, look, I think the Thunder is probably the one team left that can beat them. I don't even know about San Antonio. Of course last night San Antonio lost to Minnesota and a lot one of the big reasons they lost is because Victor Wimbayama, you know, nailed uh forget who what Reed, was it Reed from Minnesota, nailed him with a dirty elbow and got thrown out of the game. Now I don't know if he's gonna is he suspended for game five? I don't know. But even with that, San Antonio almost pulled the game out. Minnesota wound up winning it at the end, some big moments from Anthony Edwards. And Minnesota had to win that game. I mean you can't lose that game at home without went by the floor. So that series is tied at two two now. But I think the only team that can beat him is the Thunder. I I gotta say that. I think that's it. And I don't even fear them. With the way the Knicks are playing right now. Come on. I mean it it's it's unbelievable. This is a team. This is a championship caliber team that is playing at the highest level possible, and they are playing with a mission, this basketball team. This team has a mission to win a championship. There's no other way to say it. And for people that get crazy about the regular season, and I said this, you know, look, they won 53 games in a regular season. Everybody, you know, people , ah, you know, when they when they had that one stretch, they lost nine out of eleven. Everybody was getting nuts. You know, I don't uh calm down. I said it all regular season. Look, this team is gonna be a top four team in the East. They're gonna have home court advantage in the first round, which they did, and then wound up as well in the second round. And we'll see where they go from there. They'll win the first round series and we'll see what happens. Regular season. It's eighty-two games. You know, anything can happen on any given night. You know, you got back-to-back games. You got all the travel. You can't you you can't possibly compare the eighty-two-game NBA regular season to the playoffs. You can't compare it. It's not even close. And this team was a good team all year. They won 53 games, right ? How do Celtics? Celtics won more games than them. Where are they now? They're long gone. They couldn't even beat Philly. They blew a 3-1 lead to lose to the Sixers. And I really think that was the Sixers championship. You know, just beating Boston the way they did and coming back from three games to one to win, I think that was enough for Philadelphia. Because they were never in this series. Outside of game two, when they had you know, when well really in game two, they probably outplayed the Knicks in that game, but still the Knicks were able to, you know, win the game when all was said and done. Outside of that, they were not competitive in a series. They weren't even competitive. I mean, uh, let's be real . So I've said this before, I'll say it again. If the if the Knicks don't win the championship this year, when the hell are they winning it? This is this is a level of basketball that as a Knicks fan since nineteen sixty two, I've never seen. And I didn't even see the championship teams play like this, where they just, you know , game after game are just burying the opposition. And I gotta tell you, I don't think Detroit Detroit are Cleveland campaign. Cleveland forget about Cleveland. Cleveland's the softest team going. You know, Detroit will win that series. Now hopefully it goes seven. I want to see it go seven, game four tonight in Cleveland, with the Pistons up two games to one. I think Detroit will win the series. Now the Knicks won't have home court advantage in that series, but it doesn't matter. And does it really matter ? Do you think it really means a hill of beans that Detroit beat the Knicks four straight times this year and beat them badly in every game? You think that really matters now? You think the Knicks team that we were watching in in October, November, December, January, February, you think that's the same team we're watching now? Really And you gotta give Mike Brown, you know, and I and I always say, you know, coaching in the NBA, you know, I don't know how much it really matters. I mean I you know, I look at some of these teams, I don't even know how many some of these coaches are. I don't even know they are. But I gotta give Mike Brown a lot of credit. I really do. Because he made the switch, he made the adjustment after they lost game three to the Hawks. Round made the adjustment to run the offense through Carl Anthony Towns and everything has changed since then. I mean Towns is getting like almost double digits and assist every night. He had nine assists in the first half yesterday. Nine. He wound up with ten, because he barely played after the he hardly played after late in the third quarter. He didn't fourth quarter. Nobody did . Tyler Kohleck and Mohammed Diwa Di warra were out there. Hawk Porti was playing, you know? You didn't even know these guys were to run the floor for the Knicks in the fourth quarter. Or Philadelphia for that matter. So he made the adjustment uh to go to Towns as the point center, if you will. And that has changed everything. Towns had two triple-doubles in the Atlanta series. He's been unbelievable. Seventeen points, ten assists last night. He 's been great. He's been great. Everybody's been great. Who hasn't been? Who hasn't been? Mikhail Bridges, how much was he killed during the regular season? Oh my God. Oh you know, how did the Knicks trade five number one picks for the Nets for this guy? He's not any good. Really? How good has he been ? The last five games he's been unbelievable. And how about his defense? Like I said, our I' mam Maxixie., How good has that been? We're back in the Miller's Yard. I bring joy wherever I go Quality gummy vitamins from Nature Made, the number one pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand. Based on a survey of pharmacists who recommend branded vitamins and supplements . Mikhail Bridges is showing you that he's a money player. That's basically what he's showing you. And his team, man. How funny is it too? They're playing yesterday in Philly. All these Knicks fans in Philadelphia, you know, Joel Embiid before the series started. You know, he's pleading with the uh Philly fans. You know, don't let the Knicks fans in the building. Let's sell out the building with our fans. And Philly's a great sports town. But let's be honest, they only really care. I mean, and I understand the Phillies sell out and all that, but the Phillies have been good for a long time. You know, it's all about the Eagles and the Flyers in Philadelphia. It really is . You know, the Sixers are the fourth team in Philadelphia. And it showed. It showed in these in this series for sure. With all the Knicks fans down in Philadelphia. It was like playing a game in the garden. But how about how crazy is it? You know, they're playing here here's Brunson and Bridges and Hart, the three villain over guys, playing under the championship banners for the two that they won in twenty sixteen and twenty eighteen with Villanova under Jay Wright. You know, that's getting this a championship predigree on this team. You know, Carl Anthony Towns. He only played one year at Kentucky, but if you remember, he was on that Kentucky team that was undefeated going to the Final Four until they finally lost that game to Wisconsin when Wisconsin couldn't miss a shot. I was at that game in Indianapolis. They couldn't miss a shot in that game and knocked out the uh Kentucky and stopped them from winning a uh going undefeated and winning the national championship. Carl Anthony Towns was one of the key players on that team. And they did this the last two games. They killed Philly in the last two games without OG An and Obi. He didn't even play . And God knows they didn't need him. And we won't see him. Hopefully, we'll hopefully he'll be ready to go for game one of the conference finals. I think he will be. So I am right now. If you're a Nick fan, you know, I'm not delirious yet. Like I said to a couple people, I'll do I'll be delirious when I'm at the parade in the Canyon of Heroes. Then I'll be delirious. But uh you got right now, I mean, we are seeing stuff that we have not seen in the history of this franchise. I mean, and there's really no other way to say it. Seven straight playoff wins, averaging 26, almost 27 point victories a game in those seven games. Wow . Fifty one point closeout against the Hawks. A thirty point closeout, it could have been more than that against Philadelphia. Wow. A sweep . Wow. Nobody has seen this coming from this team. This team is on a championship mission. It is championship or bust for this New York Knickerbacker team. And I fully expect the Pistons. I think the Pistons are a better team than Cleveland. They're a much tougher team than the Cleveland Cavaliers are. And the Pistons will have the best player on the floor in Kate Cunningham. I don't want to hear about Donovan Mitchell . I don't want to hear about James Harden. I know Mitchell had a big game in game three. I know Harden hit some big shots down the stretch, that big three that really sealed the win for Cleveland in game three. And we'll be watching tonight. You know, all us Knicks fans, man, we'll be watching tonight, 8 o'clock on MBC, with our feet up, just relaxing, waiting to see who we're gonna play in the conference finals. I am pumped up. I am juiced up, I am excited about this basketball team. And all Knick fans should be. I I I I I they really should. I really don't know how else to say it right now, if you are a fan of the New York Knickerbacks? Un f reel. All right, let's get to the sponsors here. Manscaped. You know, I gotta tell you this, man. And for years, I have said this draft lottery is fixed. Going back to the first one ever, and I'll never forget it, and it was Mother's Day yesterday, and it was Mother's Day back in 1985 when I found out that the Knicks won the lottery. And of course, that meant taking Patrick Ewing in the first round of the first pick in the draft. And and since then, when the Knicks have been in the lottery and they've been there a lot. They have never even moved up in the lottery. They've moved down and never moved up. Well yesterday the Brooklyn Nets, who I don't know if they had the worst record in the league, but they were right there. They're certainly one of the worst teams in the NBA. Right. And apparently they had the same odds as the team that won the lottery, the Washington Wizards, to win the lottery. The Nets, with Vince Carter sitting there, the Nets get the sixth pick in the draft? What a hos ing. Let's be honest about it. Okay? If you know you can't tell me this lottery isn't fixed, it's bullshit, if you think anything else. And they don't want ever want the Brooklyn Nets to be any good. The the Nets to the NBA and I understand this is like this in New York too. And and look, I wouldn't mind the Nets being good. The Nets haven't been good since they were the New Jersey Nets with Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin and those guys. You know, when they went to the finals back-to-back years in 02 and 03. That's the that's it . Or if you want to go back to the ABA days with Dr. J when they won a couple ABA titles, that's it. Let's be real . The NBA could care less about the Nets. They don't want the Nets to be good. And maybe the reason Washington won is because it's the 258th anniversary of the country. Not that I think the NBA really cares about that, okay? You know, I don't think I wouldn't call the NBA patriotic by any stretch of the imagination. I mean, let's be honest about it. But, you know, but still, who knowss? Maybe that' the reason. Maybe they want a good team in Washington. They haven't had one in years. Maybe they want one. But they sure as hell don't give a damn about the Brooklyn Nets, I can tell you that. They got hosed. How does Brooklyn get the sixth pick? Come on. What a disgrace. I feel so bad. I texted my old partner Evan Roberts. I still feel so bad for him. And I'm gonna tell you right now, if you think, and I said this again, if you think this lottery. And it was fixed back in 85. It was fixed for the Knicks to win that lottery and get Ewing. Because at that point they wanted the Knicks to be a good team in New York. They will the Knicks will never win a lottery again, and hopefully they never even have to be in a lottery again. But they don't want Brooklyn to be good. They want them to suck perennially. Let's be real about it . What a joke. I felt so bad for Evan when I saw that yesterday. The sixth pick in the draft? Come on. And isn't it funny as we watch the San Antonio Spurs with Victor Web Wembayama? You know, the Spurs who've won what five championships now in their history. Isn't it funny that the three times that the Spurs have won the lottery. Look who's been there. David Robinson. Tim Duncan. Victor Webayama. You think this league wants the Spurs to be good? Perennially? You think? What do you think? I think so. Maybe I'm nuts. So maybe they want a good team in Washington, finally, because they haven't had one for a hundred years. And let's be honest, the w the w the the the Wizards haven't been good since they were the Bullets and they won the championship in nineteen seventy eight. That's really the last time. Not a year after when they lost to the Sonics in the finals. You gotta go back that long. Fifty years. For the last time they were any good. Almost fifty. It's it's unbelievable. Right? So give me a break. I uh you know what ? I feel so bad for the new jer for the New Jersey for the Brooklyn Nets. They got screwed again. Now I'm gonna tell I'll say it again, man. If you think this NBA lottery is not fixed, you're corre crazy. You know, if you think the league doesn't want certain teams to be good and certain teams not to be, think again. Okay? Give me a freaking break. Okay. And for anybody that thinks that the league wants the Knicks to win a championship, you're crazy. Because if that was the case, we wouldn't have had 20 years of absolute, you know, garbage, you know, of being a laughing stock of professional sports, if that was the case. So and the Knicks would have at least maybe moved up once in the years they were in the lottery. Give me come on. Come on. The Nets got hosed. What's new? The NBA does not ever want to see a good team in Brooklyn. You can take that to the freaking bank. Take it to the freaking bank. All right, but in go. The Oda Pain Podcast. All right, let's talk about the Mets for a second here. They lose again yesterday to Arizona, five to one. Uh they did have a winning road trip. They went five-and-four. Big F and deal. Ten games under five hundred. They can't hit. You know, Vientos is hit a little bit lately. Benjam's hit a little bit lately. Juan Soto's been a disaster. Let's be honest. Juan Soto, not only will he never finish his contract out here with the Mets. Never . But he's not even going to make it to his opt-out year in 2029 . With the state of this team right now, he's going to want out. He's going to want out. He stinks. I don't want say to he' stinks. And Im tired of hearing about Julia being a generational talent. Can we stop with that now? And I don't really give a damn what Ju Soto did with the with the Nationals or with the Padres or with the Yankees. I don't care. I only care what he does for my team. I really, that's it. And he ain't doing it. You could put him in a leadoff spot. You could put him back ninth. It don't matter. The bottom line on the Mets is this: David Stearns, and it's and it's all all it's starting to, you know, the people are realizing it now. Something that I said from day one. David Stearns has destroyed this baseball team. He destroyed this team. You know, you go back to two years ago. Let's look at the team that went to the National League Championship Series and lost to the Dodgers two years ago, 2024. Let's look at that. Okay . That team really Stearns had very little to do with that team. Juan Soto was n't here yet, right? And I understand Lindor's hurt. That doesn't help, right? Lindor's out for how long. But still, this team, you know, they shouldn't be this bad. But they are. But anyway, let's go back to that 2020-14 team, right? Okay ? Let's look at that team. Watt Soto was not on that team. Okay? Right? Peter Lonzo was on the team. Jeff McNeil was on the team. Brandon Nimmo was on the team. Jose Igles ias was on the team, J.D. Martinez was on the team, Luis Severino was on the team, Edwin Diaz was on the team, right? All these guys were on the team. None of them are on the team now. None of them. That's zero. Zero. Obviously, Lindor was there and he was a big part of it too, and he's hurt now. None of those guys. They're all gone. And ever since that team that ye that team has gone completely down.hill Let's remember this too about last year's team. The team went in the tank, the second half of the season, since that great night in June, and you know what I'm talking about. You look at what their record is since that night. But think about this. The reason his team collapsed last year is because of the pitching. The pitching went completely south. Senga became a disaster. Peterson was a disaster. A disaster. All the guys that Stearns brought in for the bullpen turned out to be brutal. Cedric Mullins, who we traded for at the deadline, he was brutal. But this team, as bad as they were in the second half, they won eighty-three games last year. They finished four games under five hundred. Excuse me, four games over five hundred last year. And then the genius decided to destroy the team. To destroy the freaking team. And you saw that article John Heyman had when Alonzo kind of called him out a couple years ago with all his bullshit analytics, you know. David Stern, he is the and and and I said it from day one, okay? First of all, the guy's way over his head. This isn't Milwaukee anymore. He's a small market general manager and that's what he is. He's not ready for the big I don't care that he's from New York. I don't care that he was supposedly a Met fan. I think that's bullshit too. He's a small market GM who wants to show you how smart he is. I don't have to spend a lot of money and I can win. Well, you know the deal. Okay ? He destroyed this baseball team. David Stern. You know? Because to these guys like David Stearns, you know, he's smart. Of course, you know, you look at all these new GMs or presidents of baseball operations, whatever the hell their title are. They're all these Ivy League educated guys. They all think they're smarter than you. None of them had any at hletic ability whatsoever. So they got to reinvent the baseball wheel. You know? Batting average means nothing. RBIs mean nothing. Wins mean nothing. Right? Right? Nobody pitches 200 innings anymore. It's all about right. It's all about OPS. It's all about war . It's all about exit vivo . It's all about spin rate. It's bullshit. That's what it is. And I said this and I'll continue the Mets will never win with David Stearns as their general manager slash president of baseball oper ations. Never. He destroyed this team. And now the you know who's paying the price for it? We are as Met fans. This team is never getting to 500. Never. I don't know what's going on with Soto. I don't know when Lin The bullpen is not any good. I mean we could go on and on and on, right? Uh I know Vientos is hit lately, but I'm tired of him. I'm tired of Alvarez. I'm tired of Beatty. He's showing some signs with Carson Ben ch. No doubt about it, B Bo ouchette's been an absolute disaster. Disas ter. You know? He's a he's great in Toronto when he's in, you know, in in a market like Toronto. And remember he had he had Guerrero in that lineup, you know, guys like that too . Bo Bichette, he's been terrible. What did they go? I I believe that Bich ette and Soto combined went 0 for 20 in the series against Arizona. They lost two out of three. Oh for 20? What? This guy's supposed to be a big RBI guy with supposed to be great with runs in scoring position. He stinks. And he's the he's gone after the, you know, he's leaving. He's got an opt-out after this year. He's gone. They paid him 42 million. There's no way he's he's coming back to the Mets. He's a one and done. And don't let the door hit you in the ass on a way out either. Don't let And remember that I'm gonna say this too, Met fans. For all the people out there that were good with Alonzo going and good with Nimo going and good with McNeil going and good with Diaz going I know Diaz was not a homegrown Met. Give me the homegrown Met every day over the guy that they bring in from somewhere else, okay? And I know there's been a few that have worked out. Beltran, you know, Lindor has, you know, Diaz did. You know, I get that . But most of the time, these guys don't work out. I don't give a damn what they did for I don't give a damn what Soto did for the other teams he played for. I don't give a damn what Bo Bouchette did for the Toronto Blue Jays. I don't care. Right? Just like guys by J ason Bay. I don't give a damn what he did for the Red Sox or whatever on the team, Pittsburgh or whatever. I don't give a damn what Jim Fergosi did for the Anaheim California Angels. I don't give a damn what Carlos Ballega did in Cleveland or Robbie Al I don't care. I only care what they do for my team. That's all. I don't give a damn about what they did for anybody else . And boy, that wants to signing, that's looking great right now, isn't it? 50 million a year for this guy, and he is stinking it up. And even last year, when he put up all those numbers, 43 homers , 105 RBIs, 30 something stolen bases, right? OPS. Oh, he had a great OPS. Of course he did. Walked a million times. Well, isn't it a different world when Pete Alonzo and Brandon Nimo are not hitting behind you anymore? Ah, but the genius Stearns, he knew what he was doing. Right? He knew. He's smarter than us. He's smarter than everybody. Right? He's the smartest guy in the room. As I've said before, the only guy smarter than him is Gary Cohen. He's smart. He's, you know, remember he's an Ivy League guy too. He went to Columbia. So he's the one guy smarter than Stearns . Unbelievable. Thank you so much, David. Thank you so much, Stevie Cohen. As we now, thank God it's the summer, right? When I can play golf, I can go to the pool, I can work on my tan, and thank God for the Knicks, who are you know, hopefully you're gonna get me through the month of June and maybe I'll be going to a parade. It's only been fifty three years. You know what I mean? As I said to my family yesterday, my my wonderful, beautiful granddaughter, seventeen year old granddaughter Sim one, uh, who's going to college. She'll be starting in college in the fall. She said to me, Grandpa, when's the last time the Knicks won? And I looked at her and I said, because they were showing highlights of the seventy seventy-three team.
