Are we FINALLY going to see the real Sixers? | PHLY Sixers PodcastMar 27, 2026 — starts at 0:00

I was perfect timing from I Gavini to basically start the show off because I was going with Do You Believe? And I Gavini says, Y'all, I'm scared to believe again. Well, get ready, buddy, because they're gonna pull you back in live from the Xfinity Lounge. It's the PHLY Sixers Podcast with Derek Kyle and Devon. I'm Devon Brie, President of Basketball Operations, and all of you checking in. Yeah, I Gavini, they' gotve you. And they've got you because Joel MB comes back after seemingly five months off and drops 35 and three quarters. You have VJ Edgecomb now standing in as the new franchise face. Tyrese Maxie says, hang on there, buddy. I might be back soon. Get ready for me too. And Kelly Ubre is letting everybody know. Yeah, I don't know if I'm breaking any news, but I'm playing on Saturday. Let's get nuts everybody. The Sixers are back. Or are they? Are they trying to finally bring the whole crew together, we get a chance to see them for the final nine games of the season, some form or another, piece by piece, as we said on Wednesday, where you get Paul George and Joel Embiid back, Kelly Ubre. We'll get to the audio here shortly from practice today of what his timeline looks like. And then Tyrese Maxie. So Kyle, as we gear up for everything here, and we're going to play the audio from Kelly Ubre shortly. But as you put it in the uh in the headline here, are we finally getting a chance to see the real Sixers now? I was stunned to arrive at a Sixers practice and get almost universal good news, how many times have we all, or us individually over the years, been to practices to learn hey, somebody's hand fell off or hey the GM of the team may or may not have been operating burner accounts or no even after a good game, right after the Miami win where we're we're excited, Joel came back, Joel looked good, team gets an important victory. We go to the next practice and it's like, hey, actually, he's out now again. And for the foreseeable future. So to arrive at practice after they drop 157 points on the Bulls. Joel looked great. Paul after a slow start is great. VJ had a great game. I think, frankly, during the minutes that mattered, was their second best player. And to get even positive maxi news where we weren't expecting to have a formal update on him, and we're still waiting for the formal update. All of that happening at once. Kelly's making declarations. It's like, boy, they saved all the good news for Friday. There's no Friday news thump. So now now it's like, man, on at 5 30 p.m. is something gonna fall out of the sky and the normal order of the universe is going to be restored in a bad way. I'm trying to think positive thoughts. We had a great time of practice learning all these things. And then you look at we're excited for the weekend ahead too. Cause they look, it's a huge matchup with Charlotte on Saturday that we're going to talk about later. Miami on Monday is a big one. Like the games are exciting. The roster is getting all these guys back. So I I think like it's it's just easy to get caught up in that. It's easy to get excited again. So I've been happy to see all our people are feeling good. Our all p our people are feeling happy. We had our guy Attila in the Discord say, I'm gonna say some irresponsible things. You know, one or two people come back. So yeah, it's it's a good vibes Friday. Happy to be here. Happy to have some good news to deliver everybody on a Friday. How about you, Derek ? I've been hurt so many times. I'm expecting by a time they land in Charlotte, one of them will have contact and seps sepsis. Yeah. That's what I'm looking for. Uh an infection. Um no, look, it is I mean And I know your thing is basically, can you just give me one healthy run? Just one. Just one. And look, you've still got a lot of games played between now and when that run would end. Start here. It is look the combination of getting Embiid and Paul George back um against the Bulls, then the way they played against the Bulls, and then getting Kelly coming back tomorrow, good news seemingly on Tyrese, although he's still, you know, gotta be cleared and whatnot. But the combination of all that kind of puts me in the um Attila camp where like you can say some pretty irresponsible stuff pretty quickly because they're a very talented basketball team who again the two main cogs like we've talked about like oh well they don't have enough shared time together and for some players that's true for your two main cogs like they can just drop back into that two-man game pretty quickly and pretty seamlessly and all of a sudden you're you went from doom and gloom a month ago when it seemed like well didn't seem like everybody was legitimately out to now saying, look, well, why why can't why can't they beat the Detroit Pistons in round one? Why can't they do this? They have the talent to do it. And it is look, I'm just happy to watch good basketball. If you can give me a long playoff run, I am even even happier. Um, everyone is, I think when you get past this moment of exuberance, you're gonna be like, all right, but we all we all know, like, you know, we gotta be careful, like, gotta be a little bit guarded, can't be a Sixers fan without trying to clean you know hold hold your emotional sanity in check. But look, this is a team here. If if you could told me there was any team that needed like their star players to have like a month off right up before the uh the the final stretch, it's probably this team because look, Joel Embiid's knee, Joel Embiid's shin, Paul George's knee might be the best it's been since the start of the season. And it's the right time to do that. It look, it's it's I'm just excited to see them play basketball. Whether or not it's sustainable, they'll be healthy in a month, like we'll deal with that then, but I'm just excited to see them play basketball. All right, we're also going to check in a little bit later on the Sweet 16 that's got underway on Thursday night. Uh four games tonight, some prospects there as well that we like to keep an eye on for these games also. So we'll check in with the uh Rita's Sweet 16 check-in a little bit later on the show. But as we speak about players getting back out there on the floor, Paul George, Dwell and Beat on Wednesday, we knew the update for Kelly Ubre was either Wednesday or Thursday. He decided decided to share whatever he wanted to share. Not only today, but he teased it on Instagram where he posted some some cartoon graphic about uh basically uh I'm getting close uh on Instagram and today at practice Derek and Kyle there for the Sixers uh practice ahead of the Charlotte game on Saturday. And this is what your starting wing player, Kelly Ubre, with uh, you know, has some time on his hand, so he also has a new look. This is what he had to say about his availabil ity. It's felt really good. Um a lot of this thing that I've been dealing with has just been inflammation and pain management and I told the training staff, you know, once I can move my elbow, once I'm able to dribble the ball, shoot the ball, kind of do what I can without any discomfort, I want to play basketball. So I'm still ready to play basketball. Yeah. Yeah. So I don't know if I'm breaking news or not, but I don't care. Yeah, I'm playing basketball tomorrow. So I'm excited. Uh we got a good thing going here and I'm just trying to help push this momentum forward into the postseas on. All right. So we get one. I love when a player just makes the the executive decision like screw the injury report and any kind of Sixers PR update. I'm playing, and I'm telling you right now, I'm playing. I love that energy . It's good to hear. And as you say that, man, I'm like, let me go and check the injury report and see exactly what it might say. Just because are they gonna put anything on the injury report after the man right there, said I'm playing tomorrow, but it's great because while Maxie may be out, y you uh you presume that I think Kelly Ubre will be right back in the starting lineup. Well maybe they bring him off the bench just to ease him into it. It did seem to be so the I would assume that's correct, Devon, but Nurse uh appeared to leave the door open for Kelly potentially coming off the bench, did not say specifically how they were going to use him. And when he did come back the last time after two months off, he started coming off the bench. Yeah, and I think the other piece of the puzzle here is that Dominic Barlow is when Joel and B's healthy, Nick Nurse wants him to play like all his minutes with Joel Embiid. And it's hard for Embiid and Barlow to be anchored to one another, or for Barlow to be anchored to Joel if Kelly's gonna start because otherwise you're the how do you get him on the floor? The only problem with that though is Kelly shoots like ten percent better from deep when he's playing alongside of Joel. So they both have the same problem. Yeah, it's a a little bit of a push-pull. I do think too that Kelly is probably a little bit more particular about the the pride factor of starting versus being a a bench guy, which is not a good thing or a bad thing. It's just I think that's how he feels. Regardless, it sets up for oh,, okay. So now you can throw different matchups at teams. It doesn't have to be these are our five guys who they have standing. Yeah. So put them out there. It it allows for different combinations with the rotation. If you play a team like Charlotte, that they're not particularly big, they're going to be, you know, small-ish and athletic. And so yeah, maybe you start more wings instead of a Barlow type player, like a true power forward, but yeah, he's right he sounds ready to go. You know what else was interesting that he talked about today was he had mentioned a while back about his wrist and the problems that he's dealt with there. And it was asked a question about his shooting this year, which has been, you know, I think it's a career year. If it's not, it's at least close to one. He's shooting really well on the wings this year. And he said that prior to this year, he didn't have full range of motion on his shooting wrist. And so the work that he was able to do in the offseason to rectify that, he thinks has been a big part of why he's been able to shoot better this year. Now, whether that's you, know, I don't know if that's actually the case, if that's what solved it. If there's been more work with I know he works with Drew Hanlon and certainly other uh other guys in the offseason, but it's funny to think that he said that wrist was not right from the time he played in Charlotte onward. Wow. Which is a that's a long time to go without your your shooting wrist being and he was wearing tape uh uh around his wrist. Sometimes he had a a So that's obviously that's not connected to what he dealt with recently, but it's just a reminder of like even when guys are not hurt in the sense that they're on the injury report, they could be carrying things that impact their play. So yeah, I'm excited that Kelly's going to come back. I think when you add him to a group now that has Justin playing well too, it gives nurse options like okay, Justin's going to come in for some shooting, and maybe they can even play some you know, Justin at the two or Kelly at the two effectively, yeah, and have like a three-wing lineup with some shooting, athleticism, switchability. I think with Paul back in the lineup the other night, they were more switch heavy than they've been instead of, you know, throwing a lot of two on the ball and trying to flood the zone, so to speak, and recover, a lot more just one through four switching, which we haven't seen in a while, and I think that works a lot better with this personnel than what they've been playing for the past couple months. It's looked pretty good. Uh looking pretty good as we get ready for the game tomorrow. We'll talk about that one a little bit later. But having him back in the lineup where you do talk about some of the things with being on the floor for Dominic Barlow, we discussed it after the game, uh gave him the unsung hero, his own award, of course, with campaign, but he's his big difference with Joel and Bede out there. But it's also the shooting part if Kelly Oubre is now out there with Joel Embiid, those closeouts are a little bit different in the corner with Ubre versus what Barlow presents. Two quick comments. I'm just looking at us on the screen. And this is as close as we get to a work uniform. It is actually amazing how in sync we are with our outfits today. A lot of people wore the blue instead of the black and and really messed it up but it's our push for the playoffs. This is the this is our work in a row. We are locked in. This is the nine in a row to jump back in the top six. Second thing, I looked it up real quickly, Kelly's has a sixty four point six percent true shooting with embiad and a fifty five point four percent without. So you're talking about a legitimate ten percent bump in efficiency. Uh it is one where you talk about you know the shooting from the corners next to Joel. And I really and going back to the point about the wrist, Kelly mentioned that at the end of last year that he had to get it fixed. He mentioned it at the beginning of this year that he felt like he had made progress in it. So him then following through with those statements with the best shooting of his career, you know, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that that is a significant factor. The other significant factor is he's playing alongside Joel Embiid a little bit more. And he's only shooting 32% from three when Embiid's off the floor compared to get this, 47.3% when Embiid is on the court. Pretty high quality looks he's getting with Joel. Different looks. But he's also a very substantially and materially different shooter than Barlow is. Like Barlow is great for a lot of different reasons, whether it's cutting, whether it's you know diving in there and finding lanes for the offensive rebounds, whether it's, you know, even having a little bit of ability to pass on the move when he makes those cuts, as we saw in the last game where he had a number of assists. I think he ended up with five assists, a lot of them coming off of Embiid's initial pass. So they both give you something different. You know, I go back to and we're actually having a little bit of a debate with this with a bunch of the beat reporters at practice tod ay. In the playoffs, I just feel like Barlow's offense is going to be easier to take away, even when he's playing alongside of Joel Embiid. Whereas Kelly, you at least have to think about respecting that corner shot. So I wonder if you don't just go to Kelly next to Joel, even though it's true, and Devon and I spent a significant, significant chunk of the postgame show last night talking about how much better Dom is next to Embiid. The problem is Kelly's bet next better next to Embiid too. And I think Kelly's shooting has at least a chance of being respected by, say, Boston in the playoffs, by Detroit in the playoffs. Whereas Dom, you can cut all day. They're going to leave you wide open in that corner. They're going to run away from you and sit in Joel's lap. And I think you have a harder time if you're trying to hide your weakest guy. Like teams will sag off of Kelly somewhat, but not to the extreme degree of Barlow. But even if they're not, and you're saying, all right, they're gonna try to play man up, Kelly is not someone you can just stick a terrible defender on and say, eh, he'll be good over there. Ca thatuse's one where if you find Kelly in the corner or on the wing and he's got a weak matchup, Kelly is a slasher who can go right through somebody, score from the mid-range, get fouled around the basket. So he comes back and he presents a different set of problems. And we always talk about it too. The defense is really important. I think the one thing you would say the other night, while they had good defensive moments and possessions, you still end up giving up what 137 points to the Bulls. I get that there are when you're scoring as much as they did, you're not gonna ex have a like 157 to 100 game. We all understand that, but they gotta lock in on defense a little bit more. And Kelly is certainly going to help there. The play-to-play competitiveness, his ability to take different assignments and matchups, that'll be a really nice addition coming back into the rotation. A quick question from MCAT who's watching on the flight home on the plane. Hey. Thank you for checking in, MCAT131313. The question is watching on the flight home, but uh is this the most talented team the Sixers have had with Embiid going into the playoff s? The most talente d? I mean, if you're just talking talent, maybe pure talent one through seven where they are in their career, like being able to actually apply that talent, that I'm not sure because Paul obviously 35, uh, he's not what he once was physically. VJ, what 20 or 21? 20. 20, not what he's going to be eventually in four or five years. They might not be all at the right point in their timeline, but the real difference is like back in twenty nineteen, Joel was reliable. Even if he was a worse, he's a better offensive player now than he was back then. He was just way more reliable back then and better defensively. Yeah, I think the case for this team is uh you probably feel a little bit better about the seven, eight, nine than you did in like twenty nineteen or I think the team that people tend to underrate is the twenty three team with Harden because that's the year that what they won fifty four games, I believe. Well that's the only year Joel was kind of healthy for the playoffs too. He was kinda healthy that yeah. Oh yeah, kinda healthy because he had the the hand and the anyway, we're not don't have to relitigate all that. But those teams were were pretty thin. Especially the 2019 team that I always say they had six playable guys. And the sixth guy was James Ennis, which I all due respect to our guy James Ennis, but that was not exactly a murderer's row. That starting five and that that top-end group was tremendous. But I do think the mix of right now the veteran talent, you have Tyrese on the superstar ascent. You have Joel when he's on the floor, is still really, really good . Not quite as good defensively, obviously, but offensively, really, really good. Paul, as Nick Nurse said recently, the defensive captain. And you have VJ as you know the the youth, the athleticism. You get you have a little bit of shooting. You have a backup center in Bona who while I don't I don't know what you can expect from him in the playoffs. I do trust them a little bit more than the guys they've had in that position in the back. The bar is on the freaking right. The bar is on the floor on that one. And you have some guys that you you can plug in right tonight. Quentin Grimes. I think better than their bench players of the past. Yeah, like I think you could make the argument. I'd have to sit down and really go uh player for player. But yeah, if they're healthy and then you also you gotta compare it against the state of the Eastern Conference at the time too, right? Be cause I still think I look at it as there is no juggernaut like runaway favorite type of team in the East. I think there are a bunch of good teams, even potentially great teams, but nobody that I look at is like, oh my God, there's no way they can beat them in a playoff series. And that I think is the biggest difference. There's no team in a matchup where I'm like, eh, they there's just no way. Like people go back to 2019 in the Raptor series. Man, if they had just won, my pushback on that team was always Giannis handed them their asses that entire regular season. So I'm not scared of anybody necessarily. I'm scared of them staying healthy, which is why this is such a rush of good news that we got. That's where it always comes back to. Them. Not necessarily the opponent. Them. All right. With Kelly Ubre saying he's playing tomorrow, there's only one more person. One more player that is set to return, and we're supposed to get an update next week on where he is. But he spoke today, and we will let you hear what Tyrese Maxie had to say at Sixers Practice today, ahead of the Hornets game. We'll talk about the Hornets a little bit later. He's just the other guy. As he's the one that's the last one to come back. We don't know. When is he coming back? Supposed to be reevaluated next week? Well, Tyrese Maxie at practice today. Derrick Kyle there. What did Tyrese Maxey have to say about his soon to be returning to the lineup? Tyrese Maxie? Uh no, I feel pretty good. Uh yeah, I just got a new split. I don't know if it y'estersday or a couple days ago, um, I've been working conditioning-wise, doing all the things that it they need me to do, so we'll see. How about yourself? I don't know. I just learned patience, learned patience. I feel like guys are playing pretty good. Justin's been really good. Dodez has been great as always. Um it was good to see PG and Joe back last game. And uh I think we can at this point get healthy at the right time and uh try to get on the court as soon as possible. So it's really been good to see just Joel out there, PG out there, BJ, Justin, Kelly's been trying to work his way back in. And uh, you know, I just ready to get back out there with my gu ys. All right, Tyree Smaxy there at practice today. And Derek, we've seen videos from uh where where Kyle was there earlier in the week and posting videos of guys working out today, seeing Joel and Bede and Tyrese Maxi in their workouts, other videos where we see him shooting from the three-point line, even with the splint that he had on and staying conditioned. As I was saying to Kyle before while you were doing something else, he's the last one that we worried about as far as conditioning. It's just ball handling with his strong hand, with his shooting hand, and doing those th ings. I again, once he gets back with whatever amount of games in between comes with him, hopefully just maybe six left potential, hopefully when he comes back out there on the floor, but it all sounds good, at least. Yeah, and look, he is the one whose return I don't want to say his health is the biggest question mark because as long as Joel and B is playing basketball, Joel's health will be the biggest question mark, whether it's the knee, whether it's anything else that could pop up. But he is the one whose return and his ability to play when he returns, I have the most questions about just because it we all have his struggles last year in our heads with the same injury. And you know, him, you know, it feels like just a week ago, yeah, you'd see some videos of him, but it was mostly left-handed stuff, left-handed shooting, going to his left. He is certainly doing more and more and more. And today probably did the most that we have seen. Um, it seems like he's progressing in the right direction. It doesn't seem like it's bothering him like it did last year. He seems like he's relatively optimistic. And of course, we'll have the full interview posted up on YouTube in a bit. But you know, until I can see him shoot and really connect from deep against NBA defense with that that that that pinky. I'm gonna be a little bit concerned, but I am optimistic because it just seems like he feels comfortable with where it's at. Yeah, and the thing that he said, which I think is true and very fair, was that last year when he dealt with the same thing, he just played through it. It was, I'm gonna stay out on the floor. There's no thought to like the season was in such peril that he was like, I have to be out here. They can't afford for me to be no sitting on the sideline, taking a week, taking two weeks. And so when he eventually was ruled out, it was just like, you're packing it in for the year. And so he's being put in a different position now where it's okay. He's had time to let it heal. He's had time where he's not being subjected to contact and people slapping at the ball as he's driving and shooting. He's not had to potentially even like learn bad habits with a a pinky that's messed up where you know then you're you get into that bad habit and the the shot just completely goes away. He's been given a little bit of time, which is not an abundance of time. It doesn't mean that it's going to be fully healed and fully right before he comes back. But I think from what he has said, this has put him in a much better position to come back and like, okay, I'm going to be okay. It's not going to impact my shot. And so you start seeing him taking these jumpers in practice. Obviously, we're not gonna put too much stock in practice jumpers. He doesn't even know whether he's gonna wear a splint to play or or what the doctors are gonna recommend there. So we are still in the feeling out process for how this will impact him. But I think the signs have all been positive and Devon, we talked on the phone when I was on the way over just about what he said, what we were going to talk about on the show. And I mentioned to you that both nurse and Maxie said he's been really diligent working on the conditioning. And you were basically like, yeah, he's the one guy we definitely don't have to worry about there. I think the other part of it is like when it's a hand, it's not like he has to be off his feet. He can be in the gym, getting sprints in, going on the treadmill, any kind of you know, pool exercises, whatever it has to be, he's been putting in the work there too. So when he comes back, assuming they can keep everybody whole and you know in the bubble wrap and whatnot over this next couple of days to a week, it is, you know, all systems go from there and that'll be really, really exciting if they can finally finally get all these guys back on the floor together again. So as we look at this video that Brie puts up that you guys have from the practice, you saw him on Wednesday during the pre-game stuff that you posted and then today in in practice. But even just from your your blind eye, seeing him shoot, does it look like theirs and and Derek's not wrong with we gotta wait and see how they game speed all the settings yeah when you get into the paint it's a little bit different but when you're watching him though it looks it's so so much much different than what you see in person's versus what we see on film. Yeah, listen, I think it's for a guy who's got a splint, it's about as normal and natural as it's probably going to look. I I don't think he's showing it's not like he was we watched him for I don't know Derek what five ten minutes he was out there at the end of practice so we don't know everything else he did but it's not like we saw him catching like a catch-and-sotho opportunity and really thinking about it or looking at his hand all flowed pretty naturally. A lot of pull-up jumpers as well, where you got to have strength in the hands to you know go through your gather and whatnot. So from what we can see and everything we're hearing from the coach, from Maxie himself, all pointing in a positive direction. The one I want to see too is when he gets into the paint and if he feels like the floater is not right with the right hand. He was practicing a lot with that left hand, both dribbling and shooting, if we'll see a lot of those runners with the left hand too, to make it a little bit easier just to keep some of that uh opportunity to get smacked on the right hand and just floated up with the left. So curious to see that when it whenever he does come back, but good to hear. And again, Derek's not wrong on that part, but conditioning wise, he's the one that I'm not worried about at all. And uh we'll see when he does come back. All right. And speaking of when he comes back, well, he won't be back tomorrow. That's Kelly Ubre. But they have a big game and we'll have our pregame tomorrow. So six o'clock tip time, if I'm correct. I think it's the six o'clock tip time for the Sixers and the Horns tomorrow. So our pregame show tomorrow, we will get things together, all four of us here at 5 30 here on the pregame coverage. But Nick Nurse also spoke at practice today, and this is where we'll also get into the conversation of where things are in the standings and look at the important games on schedule tonight that directly impacts the Philadelphia 76ers in the crowded part of the five through ten in the Eastern Conference. We'll do that when we get back. It's the PHLY Sixers podcast presented by Bet365, where winning is everyt hing. And uh he's fired up about the Hornets. That's as complimentary as I can remember him being about another team, perhaps 'cause he knows what the stakes are this weekend. All right. Well, after practice, an afternoon flight to head to Charlotte for a six o'clock game. Big game against the Charlotte Hornets. How about they go out there and just represent themselves a little bit better than they did the last time where they got down by fifty to the Charlotte Hornets? How about they do that? Well, in order to do that, they need to be ready for the game tomorrow. Nick Nurse speaking glowingly about the Charlotte Hornets. Let's hear what the head coach had to say about their next oppon ent. Making everything super interesting, every every single game matters, right? I think that that uh you're certainly if you weren't checking the standings earlier, you're checking them now and you're watching the games every night. Um and listen, I think uh Charlotte's obviously a a big surprise to everybody, but they're legitimately for real. I mean they are they are very good. Um you guys can look at all the numbers, the record, everything they're doing, who they're beating, all that stuff is is totally legitimate, right? It's not like they're they're doing it once in a while. It's been a consistent thing here since the turn of the turn of the new year. Um So yeah, we gotta get ready to go. I mean tomorrow's a tomorrow for sure is a is a tremendous energy. The pace they're playing, the energy, the amount of people they're playing. I think 48 threes a game, uh coming from all over the place. Everybody's handling it. Everything's happening really fast. So we better be ready, ready. There's just gonna be like there's just like no moments to to relax or ease into anything. It's kinda on from the jump ball, so we'll see. I think it's a tremendous test for us. Well, Kyle, no longer a surprise, man. No. No longer a surprise. No, though, the horn so to his point, and I'm 100% with him on this. It's not like we see every year, this time of year, teams can go on runs and in many cases, not all cases, but in many cases it's like, oh, they had a soft portion of the schedule. And certainly the Hornets, when they've played bad teams, are beating them. But they're also like they're going to Boston and beating them handily. They're beating the Knicks. They're beating real playoff teams. Like they're beating a lot of the play in teams or potential play in teams. Like they recently beat Miami by 30. They beat Orlando by 19. They're they beat up on Portland, I believe, once and then won a squeaker over them when it's tough to win two games against the same opponent in the regular season in in short succession. They've beaten Atlanta a couple times. Like this is a team that has genuine quality wins. They beat the the Spurs, I believe, although I think the Spurs might have had some guys out for that one. Regardless, this is a a team that has real identity that has had basically their entire rotation healthy for an extended period of time. And so between Lamello, Miller, Khan, you've got the the young second-round picks that they drafted this year that made a real impact. Like they also made additions at the deadline, like Kobe White. Like they this is a team that has depth, that plays a particular style, that it's we've talked about it on the show. It's similar to how the Celtics play. They get up a lot of threes. They play fast. They play a lot of guys. That is not a team that you can afford to look past. And I know the Sixers are not because of one, how Nurse is talking about it. And two, just the reality of the standings. It is impossible to ignore how close all these teams are, and with how well that Charlotte has played for an extended period of time. You gotta go into tomorrow with like a playoff level mentality. Kelly Ubre did talk about it at one point where he was like, you know, you don't want to talk it up too much and psych yoursel ves out. Maybe there's little of that, but to me that this has got to be you prepare for this game as if it is a genuine playoff game. And then you worry about the Miami game next. Like you can't even afford to say it's a big weekend. This is just a big matchup period on Saturday night. Yeah. One thirty ninety three was the final score on January twenty sixth. That was the sh mit that was the third game of a nine game winning streak for Charlotte in those first two games where Orlando and Washington. So when we were preparing for that, when all of us together, we were like, all right, they had two nice wins. But guess what? Sixers, go in there, handle your business. And instead, they got rocked. And that was the last time we saw the Hornets. Little did we know that was really the start of what we're talking about here today. Yeah, I think they've only lost like four or five games since that point. Uh they're on a they're on a huge roll. Um no, and look, they they This is a two-month run. Yeah. No, this is just like half a season at this point. It's not even really a run. Um and we've talked about this before, but the way that they can you know get up and down the court, the way that they really hunt threes, and they hunt threes. Are they tops in the league in three-point rate at this stage? They're real close. They're either one or two. Uh I'm pretty sure I would assume Boston is probably the either first or right there with them. I'm pretty sure since February first, though, since really this run started, I think they're leading the league in three point attempts and three point attempt rate over that span. So they will do everything that Sixers do a bad job of denying, and whose system almost explicitly encourages teams to do. You know, whether that's getting back in transition, Sixers don't do great at that, as we have seen time and time again, or whether that is, you know, selling out and giving up that corner three. The Sixers pretty willingly do that. And they will say thank you. I will take that shot. So it'll be real interesting. You know, there's like a million different ways this game is going to be interesting from your players coming back and not only Kelly coming back, but also, you know, Joel hasn't had to play a follow-up game in quite a while. Paul George making his second game back. How do how does everyone respond to their first action in quite a while? Uh, and then also just how do you respond from that beatdown you got earlier in the season into a team that's playing really exceptional basketball? And to that point, neither Joel or Paul played in that earlier matchup. So how does that change, you know, the geometry of the floor, what the Sixers game plan is, I think it would most likely mean less Andre Drummond, who if I recall correctly, did not have his finest moments in that Charlotte game. Not that anybody was out there playing well when you lose by how much they lost by. But you know, what is the impact of the returning bets is uh a big storyline going to tomorrow. Must win game tomorrow and a message stretch with m uh Saturday and Monday when you play Charlotte and Miami both on the road. And for tonight, just to give everybody uh you we know you'll be watching the tournament and we'll check in with that a little bit later. We know the Phillies are playing as well. But for tonight, just for everybody to know the schedules of games to watch. Hawks at Celtics. The Hawks have been on a tear themselves where they had won 11 in a row, and then it's been what 14 of their last 15. They take on the Boston Celtics tonight. That's a 7-30 start for the Hawks. And the Hawks are currently, they won three in a row because of this run that we're talking about. And they have a half-game lead up on the Toronto Raptors right now for five. The Heat, who beat the Cavs on Wednesday. This is the two games in one city. Same opponent. Uno hosts one time, Uno 83. They host them tonight, the Miami Heat, with a little payback in mind, I'd imagine for them. That's also a 7.30 start for the Miami Heat, who are right now at the bottom of in terms of just three-way tie with Orlando and Charlotte with Miami. They're at the bottom. They're at number 10 right now. So that's important for them. And then the final game, Toronto hosting the New Orleans Pelicans. We just mentioned the Raptors are a half game behind Atlanta, but they're also only a half game up on the Sixers. So if they lose this one, that's a tie with the Sixers potentially. Yeah, they're tie with the Sixers, and we'll see how things go with the Hawks. So things keep jumbled up after tonight Savon, if the Pelicans could win tonight, I'll take back twenty percent of the things I've said about Troy Weaver and Joe Dumas running a professional. And they've been competitive, the Pelicans. They've been really competitive because theys it''s no inc incentientiveve to to los lose noe and this is a lot of what they're gonna have next year so you need good reps when we talk about time on the floor just getting DeJounte Murray back presumably back next year fears in his role, Queen with what they're doing. Zion Williamson is not missing games. He's playing. Murphy and Jones. They have to play because they only have a certain amount of games left. So they have been competitive. Should be a very interesting game to keep an eye on tonight. Those are the three games to watch for your six and has said publicly on like social media and in interviews there were people who are like why are you coming back and he's like to come and play with my teammates. The players on that team are bought in, regardless of what the the roster looks like and you know the trades they've made that rob them of some few future picks to make the team better, those guys are certainly invested in, you know, trying to stack up some wins and some good vibes heading into next year. All right. So good vibes, good wins, good water ice. Tell you about the Rita' s sweet sixteen more. Although it's gonna be freezing tomorrow. I will not be having any more Rita's on Saturday. H theit like button while you're in here with us right now. We always appreciate it. All right, let's talk a little college hoops before we get to the news and notes. And that is courtesy of our good friends from Rita's and the treats 16 that we must discuss here because there were some games last night as things got underway, where you had Arizona playing Arkansas last night, Texas and Purdue also in action. Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Houston. Couple of surprises there as we talk about the Readers Treat 16 because I looked at it and I had it, everybody. I th ought, you know what? I had Iowa Iowa. I thought will win. I had Purdue. I need to talk to the selection committee about the seeds of the city. Iowa was chocolate versus root beer, Nebraska. Chocolate advances. That's Iowa. Mango. Wild Black Cherry. Number one seed. Like, I'm sorry. Seeing lemon and cherry in a sweet 16 matchup of water ice is crazy. The cherry belongs. No, they they belong as a number one seed. You they came in. They're the equivalent of what? A four seed? No way. You're right. I agree with you there. That's what I'm saying. Like Rita's. I gotta we gotta need we need a flavor selection committee. We need a meeting. I need to talk to them about what happened here and we're gonna do some bracketology. Yes. Because I don't know how like all the readis flavors are great. But the classics are the classics. You can't disrespect cherry. You're right. You're right. You're right. I love lemon too. And lemon, I think, should be a high seed. Lemon cherry is a brute. That's like when Wichita State got like an eight-seed. Yes. And they were the most dangerous eight-seed in the whole tournament. Yeah. I'm a huge mango guy, so I'm not sure's the number one seed. Yeah. But I'm saying it should be, I think. Yes, absolutely. Okay. And they defeated Houston, which I thought, honestly, I thought Wild Black Cherry would take down Illinois last night. Illinois won. They move on to face chocolate, which is Iowa, and in the other bracket, you had Arizona, which was a the the unicorn facing I can't say I've ever had that face like so but boy they looked really good. Because I thought Arkansas was gonna they were oh this is gonna be down to the wire game, which was watermelon. Unicorn advances and they defeat watermelon in that one. Cookies and cream, which was Purdue, taking then taking down Clementine Orange. That's Texas. And man, Purdue looked good too, where they're just very well coached. They have a season point guard and Braden Smith, who is fantastic. I can't wait to see how things go with him when it talks to when we talk about pre-draft stuff because he's a let's just call it for what it is. He's a white point guard where they just disrespect the white point guard. That guy can run a team, man. He can run a basketball team. He's tough as hell. That Purdue team is very good. So what's the seeing them against Arizona's. What NBA white point guard would you compare him to? 'Cause T J McConnell. He's different than the I think he's different to T J McCoy not an MBA player then. Um Ty Jerome, maybe I think like you look at Ty Jerome, like a scoring, but he can run a team and uh so I look at him and he's a guy that took a little bit to find his NBA niche by the way where he got written off a little and I thought he was gonna come out last year. I did and he said hell no I'm going back. So this is what we have tonight. Michigan, lemon, cherry against Alabama Cherry. You got Tennessee, Pina Colada, Green Apple, Iowa State, without my guy, Joshua Jefferson, but they still advance, and I had the green apple when two weeks ago when Reed's was in here and they dropped off some great stuff. So we appreciate that. On the other side of the bracket, blue raspberry versus sweetest fish. That's Duke and St. John's in the bracket. And then mint chocolate chip versus candy cho cotton candy, which is Michigan's. I will say I think Swedish fish is under seeded here. Also, not not as badly as cherry. Okay. See, I'm not huge on either the candy. Well, I've never had the the Rita's fish. I'm not huge on the can. You do not know water ice then. I don't need I don't need to talk about this with you anymore. But yeah. Duke I think has looked the least impressive of the number one seeds so far. So they are on upset al ert. I would like for them to go further because I'd like to see some more uh of Boozer for sure. And Isaiah Evans, I think, probably more for Sixers purposes is someone we've talked about. But yeah, a lot of good games tonight. The Michigan game. I want it because again, Michigan's got probably three different NBA prospects on that team, including a couple of guys who may be available around the Sixers pick. The Houston pick is currently sitting at, I believe it's 21. And boy, I don't know if you guys watched the Timberwolves Rockets game, the end of it the other night, after our game. Yeah. What a meltdown on both sides of that game for the wolves to almost give it away and then snatch victory from defeat. That was that was something. So yes, we're keeping track of the the Houston meltdown they're having over there, and we're keeping track of all these wonderful games tonight. So what you do is while you're getting ready for the games tonight, if you're still at work, take advantage of the printer, the copier and all that, so you can print out this bracket, the treat 16 for the sweet 16 and the treat 16 courtesy of Reedus. And uh just you know mark things off and update your your bracket with the great Readis bracket here with the treat sixte been cool. We're back here in spring. Go to Readers Learnmore at ReadersIce.com. All right, what's your final four of this bracket? As far as um the flavors . Let me see. So you do. We're not disrespecting any flavors here. Obviously, it's Rita's. They're all good. You guys know how I am with cherry. So cherry advances. They're gonna take down green apple. I hate that cherry and lemon are pitted against one another because those are two very I hold them in high esteem. Alright, so here's my final four: cher ry, watermelon, and that bracket, watermelon, watermelon in the final four, too. And uh and the other side of the bracket, I am going with blue raspberry, which you guys and and Bree already know. And I'll go with mango uh of my final four. So blue raspberry, mango, and then the other side watermelon cher ry. I think I'm close. I'm so I'm definitely going mango. I'm probably Mango's a lock. Like the mango's the the goat of this. Probably going watermelon as well. I'm going green apple in the upset a little bit. I think this is the toughest bracket though. Cinderella story for green apple. Like those are all those are all really good. That's a tough bracket. That's a group of death right there. That's a tough bracket. How about you? And I'd probably go blue raspberry for the fourth one? Yeah. How about you? I'm playing my Cinderella story is Swedish fish here. The Johnnies are going to the uh final. So Swedish fish, mango, watermelon. I'll take a lemon. Like a a l nice crisp, crisp lemon on a hot day is really good. Alright Brie, get in there. What's what's the chocolate's my number one? Oh whoa! There goes manga. Sorry. I will put Swedish fish in there, uh, cherry, and my wild card. I guess I'll do pina colada. Wow, pina colada is good. Although I will honorable mention to root beer. Root beer is a very that's my dad loves a root beer water. So I I've got to go try a Swedish fish now. Just because I've never I've never been huge on the cannon. I was skeptical when they came out with it. Like, why would they do this? And then turns out pretty good. Treat 16, Redis. Presented by Reedus . Fun fact, one my daughter worked at Reitas and lotta lot of water ice in the house. I had one right across the street growing up by the way. A lot of pints being stored in the freezer uh for for uh for the for the reason. Uh yeah, it's not not never a bad thing. And occasionally, hey, can you bring home uh dad some vanilla ice cream with the sprinkles? Rainbow sprinkles. Appreciate that. Or in a cup. Not mad. You know, bring it in the cup. It's all good. All right. Gotta try the uniform. Big games tonight in both college and of course in the NBA. We gave you the games to watch tonight in the NBA that directly impacted Philadelphia 76 or so. Hey, if you're home or even if you're out and you want to make sure you tell somebody in whatever establishment you may be in, change the channel and have each game on because there's a lot to watch, including your baseball team for game number two, uh, tomorrow as they are back on the field. Uh like we talk about. It's always weird with the start the game on one day and then you get the day off, which is very annoying, and they're back tomorrow. I know it breaks Kyle's heart too. It does. It does. Darns . All right, everybody. We're getting ready to head into overtime here on the PHLY Sixers podcast. So on the television side, we will see you tomorrow at 5 30 for a huge, huge game for the 76ers taking on the Charlotte Hornets and Charlotte. That's a six o'clock tip, so a 5-30 pregame. You don't want to miss it with us. I youf want to continue to watch this show here, head on over to all phly.com because we have a decent amount of news and notes. We're only going to get through a few because we have some other things to do post-show to for all of you to put out on YouTube . So let's do it, B ree. Run whatever one you want to start. Basketball one, the one with the we can save that one. Um, because we're gonna do that one a little bit later. So let's go with the one I sent you earlier today, which was the latest with some piz za. Alright, so uh oh, here's the one with the pizza that we have to talk about. Pizza Hut now has a new thing here where you have a hot dog in the crust. What? I'm out. Nope. Absolutely not. Those are two different foods. Keep keep the hot dog away from you. You're doing too much. They're bringing back the wild hot dog stuffed crust pizza for the baseball season. Even a stuffed crust another mark against baseball. Even stuffed crust can be too much for me at times. Just too much too heavy to,o thick. Throw a hot dog in there. No. Uh Brie. In or out? I don't know. I'm out. You said I don't know. I'm in, I guess. I don't think I would order it, but if somebody was like, hey, try this. I mean I'd try it. I I'm not saying I wouldn't eat it. I just wouldn't go. I wouldn't I wouldn't prefer it. I'm trying to say this in the gentlest way possible . I think when if this was something that was at a like you could talk me into someone made this at their house, I might try this the quality control on stuffed hot crust stuffed hot dog crust pizza at a chain level I'm a little suspect though. Well and Kyle and I have had some bad experiences with hot dogs on the road before, which that's all we'll get into. Although see and that's the You can screw up a hot dog. I I will say the Miami media room Has maybe the nastiest hot dogs I've ever seen in my life. It was very bad. And you go to Miami, you're thinking like there's gotta be some great food here. No, it was the worst food on the road we've ever had. All right. Anyway. Say what in the chat says, cowards, pass me a slice. No, no, no, no, hold on. I'm not saying I wouldn't try it. I just wouldn't order it. Like I will try almost everything, but There's no way I'm ordering an entire hot dog stuffed crust pizza. And I love Pizza Hut's crust. So you don't even need that. You don't even need that in there. You don't need that. All right. So that's one. Now we're going to the baseball fan and Kyle, Derrick and Brie. Because his favorite drink everybody that we all know he loves has partnered up with Major League Baseball. And now MLB fans can get now get a free Mountain Dew Baja Blast every time a player hits a 420-foot home run. And you and there was one yesterday. So you can get one. And then if you want to play catch with your nephew, your son, your niece, your daughter, right? Now they have the Mountain De w, the gl ove, Rawlings, hide the Baja Blast, infield glove. I looked it up. $399. $399. What? For glove . Because they're partnered with the club. Did Mr. Baja make it himself? Like he struck up all the time. The laces and the glove. So Kyle, any time a four hundred and twenty-foot home run as a baseball fan for you, you get a free Baja Black. I have been trying to drink less of the the very sugary sodas. They're trying to pull you back in with the free one. There you go. They're free. They're free. They're free. All right. Derek, you in? Yeah. All right. I mean, I love a Baja. I love the Baja Midnight too. I had one of those the other day, in fact. Yes. All right. Bree, you in on that one? Get the, you know, free. Free is free. Free is free. Free is for me. This is also because I I love my my brothers here and I know how the kind of snacks that they like. Uh-oh. I am not a fan of this, and they know how many treats that I like. But the Pop-T art dropping a new super stuffed variety. Super stuffed. Super stuffed. Where you can get in April, molten lava cake and strawberry blasts, and they will be in stores. Cinnamon caramel also is going to be at an exclusive store as you can see on there, everybody, that you can get those, but super stuffed pop-tarts to fill your your pop tarts a little bit bigger than they already have. Okay, so I'm gonna throw this out there. Here's my issue with it. Okay. It's the same issue I have with the double stuffed Oreo. Once you introduce that, how do you go back to the the regular Pop Tart or the regular Oreo? Because having more of the thing that people want in the cookie or the Pop T art makes it a superior product. So what's the in what's the use case for standard Pop Tart? Well, maybe maybe some people just don't want well, they want to try it, but they don't want to consume that much. They don't want the good part of the Pop Tart. I was gonna say I think I think the way you talk yourself going back into the normal Pop Tarts is you look at the nutritional information of this new Pop Tart. I'm sorry. If you're eating a Pop Tart like Pop Tarts are breakfast food that is not it's I love Pop Tarts. I don't d buy them that often, but I I'll I'll fuck up a Pop Tart. I can say that in overti me. I'm not eating them for health reasons. So like if I'm gonna buy Pop Tarts, I'm just I'm full sending it. Give me the give me the most unhealthy. So yeah, I don't know like I'm I'm in on these. I don't know that I'll actually buy 'em. If someone had 'em, I'd if they were here in the office, I'm sure you would try it out. I actually I tr I do try to eat like real food in the morning these days. I try to like make myself some eggs, have uh you know, like a Greek yogurt, get some protein, a little coffee, a little orange juice, get the day going. So I'd try it. I knew you'd probably probably not gonna buy it in large part because I've read the nutritional information and read the box okay do you have a preferred pop-tart flavor? I haven't regularly bought Pop Tarts probably since almost college. Break college was all Pop Tarts and um ramen noodles. That's all college was well so what were your go-to in col lege? It's it's been a a year or two, Kyle. I'm not a hundred percent sure. So I again I don't like pop tarts anymore, but I used to eat them. So mine were the strawberry frosted one. Yeah, those are a classic and the cinnamon. The brown sugar cinnamon. Those are the two that I think we had in my house. Yeah. Those were the two in part because my dad would buy them for us and then he would eat all of them. Dad wakes you up and he's already like he's eating his morning pop tart with his like okay, dad. So we keep these are fun. And then the girls like the cookies and cream um one also. So Bree, how about you? No, I I haven't had Pop Tarts in probably years, but I I like Pop Tarts. Like yeah, I'm a strawberry one. So I'm with a blueberry Pop Tart too, by the way. Yeah, so I don't have that. Might have been a s'mores. Might have been s'mors, might have been sort of oh you're going full full beat us mode on that. We did get a super chat by the way. Just saw it. What I saw that one. So we get a super chat from Shiz Shiz O Flex uh saying that uh was the OKC game was that the OKC game a results based business. Morey had six years if they go home before the Eastern Conference Finals, Bob Myers cleaning house. Sadly, he's not at these games for nothing. Thank you, Shiz . Yeah, look, I there is a lot on the line. We notice them and we've done shows about play and exit, first round exit, and it doesn't look competitive. There's good there may be some conversations that are going to be had. And we do see Bob Myers at these games as well. Yes. And by the way he's right in front of us. You can't not. This is now also setting up for it's gonna be especially bad if you have the full healthy team and you can't win a playoff series. That would be an entire series on the first rail. Yeah, like let's say they they do get the sixth seed and they end up you know match up with like the Knicks. And you lose in round one to the Knicks. Like it's okay, at what point is it just you don't have the team, you don't have the group, you don't have the coach, whatever it might be. So even if they go in all healthy, that's not like that takes any pressure off of the organization or the power players. So a lot on the line this spr ing. All right. Appreciate it., Shiz Thanks so much for the super chat. Thanks to all of you for hanging out with us on a Friday. You guys really showed up for us as always.
