It's been a while Yes, I'm good, thank you, Stefan. how are you? How have you been coporing with the heat? I mean, you know, people who play he you be good of you Yeah, people make a fuss about the heat, but it's actually easy. It's easy and I like it That's my position. Yeah. I think just laid back there but listeners can't see, Well look just back. Listers can't see My listeners know that I'm always reclined in a casual tical tropical way. Yeah, no, I think it's good I think it's good to be physically uncomfortable every second I think yeah, I'm I I'm F glad that I sweat all the time It's good. It's good to be slippery like a toad all the time every day, like and all through the night like I am as well I'm sort of yeah, I'm like amphibious now. it's good. It's really helpful with your manual dexterity on a controller as well, you know if you've got dripping thumbs. Yes. and I do have dripping thumbs. It's the editorial promise that I make to my viewers and my listeners I tell you who has fest influencer they call me. I was trying to think of a nice segue from that. I games journalist and presenter Shay Thompson, one of the OG press ors. I can't think of one Shay, so I'm just going to say hello actually because I don't accuse you of having dripping thumbs. I don't want to say you're slippery like a frog. There's nothing really There's no really way of me doing this in a smooth way. So hello, how are you? The thing is these aren't these wouldn't be accusations. These are things that I embody right now. I am sweating from places that I didn't even know I could sweat Oh w Yeah, The elbow sweat is is like that's a new thing. happens all the time. so Yeah. The elbow. Yeah, the elbow. It's Yeah. It's a good time Love su. Welcome to the Big Leagues It is the time of year that you want to you know encase yourself in a small room with hot equipment, which is what gaming. know where you've been sweating at. V have' we got knees yet. Anybodys sweatated from the knee? then let us know. Now we start every week with an unsung hero game. These are games that you know perhaps didn't get thelaw or did they deserve and they were first out or currently out and not getting the plot as they deserve. And look, we've got you in the spotlight for this one. R And I think from what I from a word our research department tells me that we have twoo options for you. One of them I think we've chosen before. So go for one and then we will see where we are Wait you've chosen wait so one of them you've chosen before. I think one of them we chosen before yet to be confirmed, but possibly about to be confirmed. So pick one and I'll let you know if I think we've done it before Okay. All right Well, I think my prime choice would be Armored Corps six. If you've already done that one. You're good. haven't done that one.. That means you have done freedom fighters for two thousand three. I have astonished Well, then it's not an unsung game, is it? It's been sung. It's good. Everybody can finally put it to rest. us right Yeahward courseore six Okay. it's a bit of a it's a bit of a stretch maybe to call this unsung because it is a recent game and, you know, it was it was pretty splashy and I think everyone who follows video games was aware. of this release and of it coming out, but I do think it qualifies as an unsung game because It's made by Fromsoftware who obviously are most famous for Dark Souls and Bloodborne and Elden Ring and all that jazz And I think the hope was that when Armorered Corps V came out, it would introduce all those fans to the Armoud Cps series, which if you're not familiar is a mech combat series you kind of go off on like individual missions. It's heavily about customization. You sort of like bolt different bits onto your mech and then like go out and you know, try and blow up all of the other little robots and stuff. It's difficult like the from software RPGs Um and it but it's structurally different because you go on these kind of like short little contained missions rather than, you know, like being part of a big sprawling world or something. U and they're great fun and they look beautiful. And the most recent one just played fantastically. It's unbelievably satisfying. They've got this great like sense of scale and heft, you feel like you're in a gigantic robot? And the environments are gorgeous. But like it's sort of like you're kind of stomping around like being a giant and you can look down and there all these like pixel high cars and trees and stuff It's gorgeous, It's really, really fun. but I don't really feel like it achieved its aim, which or at least the aim that the video gaming community projected onto it and that I projected onto it, which was like this is going to be the armoured Core Renaissance. This is going to be the point where everyone who's like into dark souls, etcetera. gets on board with Armed Corps And I don't think that's happened. It is still very much like a niche game, but I would love more people to check it out because I think I think armored Cps is so sweet and so sick, it's so fun to play. It's a blast. Why did you think it didn't cut through? you can get it for sixteen quick So like, can you really' the time to hop in if you're going to be hopping in Well just go just go buy it then. I'm just gonna buy it then. A sixteen quid O the sixteen quid ye Yeah. Yeahah, look, I'm looking at it now. Why don't you just go buy it then? I'm addressing you the listener directly now. Oh address the sn. I am also a listener.s. Well, have you bought armored Csts vies of Rubicon? I haven't, but maybe I will. Just go buy it then. Do you like mech based vehicle combat games, Shay? Should this be getting more pop? I actually do and I feel I feel particularly called out here because I was meant to play this, I own this game My friend said you would love Oh Don't cover me cover. I know Sounds like Shay owns the game. She doesn't need to just buy It' like you st. It's really life. semantic. you Shay.ant Santics that is Yeah. Well, you think From Software doesn't know that Shay didn't play it. What they know is that she bought it You should just go by at Steho Why haven't you played it, then Sha, you've got it.? it's in your collection That's a good question. I don't know. And think it's right on my alley. I lost off like so of the enders, like it it's got all the makings of what Shay Thompson likes? So do you know what? I'm gonna to install it right after this. It's a lot faster paced than Mc Warrior as well. It's way faster. Yeah yeah A on board with this Armoured Cps I've played it. it's great. It's great. It depends. It's a good it's good jumping in point if you've never played any of the Armoured Coreps. It's it's a bit different from some of the favorites. I know some people they really love four and love a lot others They liked how things got shaken up in three, but like It's great. It's a great place to jump in. You don't need to played the previous ones. it's a nice one where it's It's nice and fast paced, they their movement is a lot more agile than you'd expect from like a Mch game, particularly because there's been so many mech games in the past like third and first person So it's like this one, I feel is a nice one to start with O if you want something really arcadady, go to Titan fall too. Well look, great shout Luke. Thankk you very much. I'm in C six. It' Ch's about to download it. I'm about to buy it. I Nel's played it. You've sold it to us. So great Job done. J done. Ippy's been on on the discord saying Bomberan Generation on the GameCube is my unsung hero game. I feel it gets overlooked becausecause the GameCube had so many amazing couch multiplayer gam that is correct But I think it's up there with the lack of Smash Bothers meei or melee melee meei melee melee M Melee melee. Im sorry, what just happened toight? You know themash Bothers game.' having a breakdown. It's the heat it's the heat look. m fununctioning. This super smash for this game. OMK double dash. It's multip player game modes allowed for some of the funniest and most intense matches I' ever had. fun gameplay, colorful seell shaded graphics and really easy to pick up and play I bloody love Bomberan And I haven't played it in so long that we should do that. You know what? I think one of the best Bomberans was actually the one that came out on Stadia and no one played it It was so good. It was one hundred and something players Iew There's like you start with like different people on each map And then you're blowing each other up and then after a timeer you have to move to another segment of another map and other people might be coming into that one and other people might already be there and continuing it, it's like a battle rooyale until you whip it down to the last last bomap. It was so good. But no one at stadiia. I did play that. It was really fun. and also like like all battle rooyaes, it's impossible to win. No one ever wins. But it does mean that like at the end you get to see the like ultimate high level bomberan play. If you kind of keep spectating and you just see sort of likeud like light sort of running around pllanting bombs Yeah. I will correct myself. It was sixty four plays. It felt like a hundred s. That sounds great. Sounds great, Ol It's not it's not it's not the game if he was talking about. But f findine that you know, I take a point. And to point she wasn't putting that she is with like customiz has your own bummer man to look how you want your bum man to look. she's talking about P my generation. T'king with a ginky wor R There keep your unsung hero games coming in in the discord because we've got a great list of them. In fact, you know what we need to do We need to have a list, don't we Have beening haveave you been keeping extending? reallyad like like a Google Doc So people can access it I've noticed you're answer my question. We should have been keeping a list. So if somebody out there has a list of our unsunk hero games, Please feel free to put it in the discord. because that would be greatly appreciated. Some of us, one of us should have been writing them down I think everybody assumed someone else was. So if you don't know what we're about to do, we're about to give you some trivia for you to try and guess. You can put your questions into the discord. There's a secret channel that we can't see. put some a fun fact or something that you know about games in there and our production team will turn it into a question for you. If you don't already have a good quiz question you saw in a pub quiz or whatever. this question this week comes from Rob No Disguises. Now currently there are eighteen places on the leaderboard. Shay, where are you? Shay you're in tenth? Oh Right. And Lu you're in ninth. so The Battle of A Last week Ainneel over overtook me. He is in third place and I am in fourth. Moving up She just Movie on o. What movie on She start it to break free for some thinkers stack me So the game the question rather this week is this Who wants to be a continer? The nineteen eighty two arcade game called Lost Tomb was the first to feature something that is now common across many modern games a feature the Mse players Don't lie nineteen eighty two Arcade Game Lost Tomb was the first to feature something that is now common across many modern games, a feature that most players Don't like Mm brackets but won't stop anytime soon, Quion M. can I lock in a guess? You can lock in a guess, Luke STs. He In case somebody didn't know what a QT is? Oh a quick timee event, which is that thing where Like a button that you have to press will suddenly flash up on the screen and success or failure depends on you pressing it in time Oh That's okay. That's good So Luke's gone early. he's gone early there with a QT. He have a very strong feeling. He's got a very strong feeling about that.bviously we'll bring the answer later on in the podcast, We'll give us some time to ruminate on it. Sh your face looks like someone to me does not know the answer to this question. Well this is the thing is every time these trivial questions for I'm like, have I even played a video game before U I When I think of like things that people hate, it's like Instant fail stealth missions That's like, yeah, that's something people hate. Good one. Yeah. I was ninet ninet. People hate tying the mitsing games. Yeah. Yeah, something yeah, something timed Okay time. Well, you still have time to think about it. You dont have to lock it in like confident Luke. What are you saying Iel Yeah, I think I think maybe something time related ver Anytim any sort of timer is in a game, people and it equals failure, people hate it andd and they were the ones I'd hate the most in arcades as well. Like super hang on outrun all those ones where you just run out of time like It could be,'m just I'm locking in cuti because I like it, but I'll float this out there in case anyone else wants to grab it Could it be like microt transansactions? Do want That was mine That was mine w that. Well, then you should have locked it in Steph. I didn't you should have a call and you should have locked it in. I'm lo I'm locking in I'm locking in right now. I tell you why because I've written about in my previous life, I've written about it so often that it has to that I think It's the thing that people hate the most about games. So I'm you Luke we've got today.. Luke' taking names. I'm going to say microtransactions and lock it in. Thankk you very much, Luke But we don't have to lookck it in. you can have to think about it and we can come back to it later We can do that. Okay, good question. Thank you very much, Rob brrackets no disisguises for your question, you can do the same, stick it in the discord and we will be talking about it here on the podcast. R I will say, Steph, before you jump to the next segment The listeners, absolutely fantastic. We've not had a terrible question yet. No Yeah We've not had an easy one. They've all been like sufficiently difficult where we're all thinking are we don't know, we don't know Fantastic I will say that some of them have been too hard just sch, you know, just touch. like they've been too hot. They've been too hard They're great. They' brilliant. Well done. Thankk you.. You're like four for the leaderboard, man. Yeah who someone's good To be fair, I think there is I think there is a bias towards I mean, there's great work from Yes, Andy knows done the maths. I think they might be a slight bias towards us. so I don't think Shane look like that F behind. Anyway. You'll have seen by now, there's a lot of it's all over the place. The GTA six stuff is now starting. the drip, drip, drip of GTA details is now starting to come isn't it? And we're going to basically spend a summer talking about something, then it's going to come out and then we're going to talk about it again for another bunch of timees. So strap yourselves in. We're going sort of start wrapping up what we've been enduring about GTer. Okay, so since we last got together then the price of GT six has been announced seventy quid for the standard edition, ninety quid for the ultimate edition, but you basically have to buy the ultimate edition. We sort of suspected this I know. actuallyctually's a bit lower than I thought, if I'm honest Yeah, same here. I didn't think they would offer two versions if I'm honest of you. Price being seventy, I'm like, oh, sweet, it's in line with most AAA games that are coming out now, which is great. I think the issue a lot of people are having is no physical release. A lot of people are unhappy about that Um and a lack of like a collector's edition and stuff. But like correct me if I'm wrong The only Collectors edition GTA I could remember was GTA four That's the only one for the three hundred sixty that I can remember had like a collector' box. with a CD in and That sort of stuff. them going completely digital I think it's fine. It makes sense. like most people buy their games digitally now, like it That doesn't irk me too much. If anything, it was like if they were going offer physical, I was I'm sure how they'd release it because of the amount of leaks that they've had. but All in all, price wise, I can't complain. It's just the issue is You have to get the ultimate edition Yeah, what did you think of it she I I think I'm coming at this from a slightly different perspective because like ten ten plus years ago at this point. when GTA five came out, I was still working at HMV. I sold, I can't even like count how many copies, like physical copies of that game. And so it's GTA has like enough like mainstream appeal where People would have gone and bought it in person, even though we don't have as many like physical stores to buy video games anymore, it still has a very big u like physical market and even saying that yes, most u game sales are made through digital stores, but like there's still like one billion dollars worth of revenue that's made like you know on discs, which is not an insignificant number, I don't think. And so for them to just completely like do away with it I think is kind of wild. I think and it also like I don't know, it cuts out a massive part of the market that I find a little bit uncomfortable Yeah, interestnteresting. What what do you mean? Im I'm I like P previously discussed on this podcast, we old. like I like having a disc to put in. however, I'm not like I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I don't think I take Ch's point, though What are you thinking about it Yeah, I mean Like look, hand on heart. I'm not rushing out to get any game on disc really. I get I've got all of my games over download now and it doesn't especially Bother me personally, but I do think it kinda sucks, doesn't it? Because from a game collection and preservation standpoint, you want the actual data of a game to you know, to like to be out there and to be owned in a meaningful way by the by the people who buy it. I think as well of like I think it's nice to give games as presents and it's such a pain in the ar to like try and someone like a digital game. It's like here's a here's a code put it in like What's whereere's the Christmas morning joy in a digital download? Right? So I don't know. So you can still give the box, but obviously there's just there's a cord inside rather than a disck, I suppose Yeah, yeah, yeah. But what you're really giving is like a job to do. It's like, all right, now go. Also I don't know. I mean, I've I've lost I've lost pace We've had like how much data you can put on a game disk now. And I don't know if we know the size that GTS six is going to be like as a download, but it's going to be like spectacularly gigantic, right? So part of this Part of this might be a practical decision as well. just I don't know, I don't know. I'm slightly out of my depth though now talking because how much can you put on a game disk now? I suppose it depends what system. Anyway, in any case I wish I wish she yeah. I'ight I wish you could get it on a disk. A disc is nice. I think we'd we'd all love like a physical addition, but like I'm not surprised because Cooler Drery has been doing it for years, just a code other disk. The disc is just like nothing on the disc is just access to the thing. We like we've seen Nintendo with their game key thing.' a similar kind of thing where it's just access to the thing. L people been doing that for years. And so like when Graam fififth thought comes like, course it's gonna to do something like that. I was like, yeah, that doesn't surprise me in especially with they've had multiple leaks of their game And so and I was there for the Halo free Lak because I got my I got my physical copy early of Halo three two weeks before release And it was Crazy like everybody it was at the time, it was the biggest like video game launch of all time, Halo free. and everybody wanted it early. Everyone was breaking street dates. all the all the like independent game stores were breaking the street dates. Everybody was selling it extra along eBay so you can get the physical game to play early They just don on one that, none of that. I said now. A att midnight everyone can play it. before that, no one's touching it. It's been a top on the discord. In fact, Johnny Var, who is our exy beast on our patron who is in actually listening and watching us record this morning, said on our discord. There's no disc version down the line. It would make it extremely difficult to get a secondhand copy whichich I think is interesting, right? because this comes down to like an ownership thing, right? If it's on a disk and you were saying this, Luke, it's yours and therefore you could install it and play it without It certain amount of connection or whatever or an account at any time. You know, you don't have to do all the update and patches and things. you are now. It does change the nature of ownership I think I think the idea of a secondhand market of games sh, I don't know again, if we're just looking through roasted glasses, but I thought it was really really cool. Johny's definitely hit on something there, hasn't he in terms of like what it means further down the line. Absolutely. And you know, we are in the midst of an economic crisis, like secondhand games are how most like some people play like games as a whole. That's how they interact with the mediia. So obliterating that I think long term I't think we' I don't think we're like really understanding what that's gonna look like for a lot of people which is a shame I think that's a shame And if youre being in our ofords, by the way, we're going to be chatting John you know our next episode that you'll be able to listen to next week. thenen you can go to a Patreon. there are three teiers there join one of the teers, the Exy Beasts whichich is our bang topier. thenen you can do that have a look and then you can be here watching all the magic happen and it's all sweating together in a f st a I think I think I think ninety quids cheaper than I thought. I thought the base game would be ninety quid and I thought the ultimate edition would be one hundred and twenty. So I think actually that is a bit of a win for consumers I think because you think A Mar Yoart was in at seventy five. And I think that set that set the tone. I think there's a bit of a The gap between the standard and the ultimate is quite a bit bigger than I thought it would be. So I think that is there to encouraging people to buy it. I'm sorry about the no disc thing. I get it because of the leaks. I hope that maybe A year down the line once the game is sort of settled into into a sort of version that they're properly happy with and we accept is GTS six I wouldn't be surprised if there's like a legacy disc edition There will be like a collector's item that we will that they will put out there probably again at a hand on quid or whatever We think like this will be This is an interesting merger of and I'm going to get a bit hybro here and I make no apologies about it But this is an interesting merger between At and cash Like what they've done here is undoubtedly a piece of art that will like and a cultural commentary that will be spoken about for years to come But it's also a vehicle to make a boatload of cash. And so it's like a really interesting mix of whether you can actually do those two things. Can you make a blockbuster game that talks about that satirizes modern America And the interesting place it finds itself politically to, you know is one way of phrasing it and the rise of of sort of position of capitalism what have you, canan you do that whilst also taking every opportunity to ek every single dollar out of every person who owns a console. and that is going to be a really fascinating mix. That's the thing If there was a games company in the universe of GTA six, then they would be charging this much for their game and the game would be taking the piss out of it. And that game would then be followed with an online version that is like absolutely rife with micrractions and stuff. And that's the subtext to to this as well, right? Everyone knows the GTA six Oline is like coming down the tracks later Yeah if it's anything like GTA five, that's where the like real boatloads of cash are going to start sort of pulling into the harbor And yeah, I don't know. I think this There's obviously Rockstar is so confident in game. U because like they know that they know that this news is not going to go down Well They've also got this union busting case like hitting the courts in September, I think It is, I don't know. I've following it. There's a YouTube channel. peoplee make games. make games. Yeahing for Amazing do a great job kind of like following that. So I'd definitely shout that out if you're interested in like the latest on the, you know, the sort of union busting accusations and stuff. but like It's, I don't know. like I'm kind of at a point where Like with that price and the fact that the entire like years games slate is so messed up like as everyone tries to sort of get out of the like Everyone is Beam. Yeah, yeah, exactly. like you kind of forget that at the end of this there there should be a good video game like to play Yeah You know what I mean? So I don't know. Yeah. What if it's not that good? What if it's not? this is my thing. I'm like, you know, you were talking about the size like the download size like on the disc and why it couldn't potentially fit on there. My My kind of hot take is that I don't want a big bloated mess that you have to put across like six disks or imagine like you know four hundred plus gigabytes. I just want the game to be good and if you have to pair that down then so be it, I just I would have rather they take that budget and make like four smaller games. I just all of this for a game that is going to be probably just fine I can I can I think I think the campaign will be pretty will be pretty tight and good. I think it'll get bloated around the other stuff. you know, that I think I think they've done they've done they've made all the Not the right moves. That's the wrong way of putting it. It's They've set themselves up for super success, especially with the GT online stuff. if you know anything about like the RP, like the role playing sector of it, they like they bought up the main kind of servers of that And they've integrated that within their own company now. And so a lot of people are expecting a lot of the features that were implemented in those rolepling things to come in the GT online down the road. so and with that, a boatload of money because we forget like GJ has been in the charts for the last fifteen years and it hasn comes because people keep Bying it and it came out under three hundred sixty and the PS three, but they're still playing it today. I think It's a unicn is it? This is so different It's going blow up. Yeah. Some thoughts on the discord on this on the price, Livo said for a AAA game that's been years in development cost millions in production from a company with a track record of great games and long term replayability, I think it's a reasonable price though I'm sure they could have afforded to lower the price and still rakeed in just as much cash come the online version, which is exactly Luke's point Corey's been on the discord also one of our patrons, Coreory. I thought it would be predominantly online content you get with the ultimate edition. but just been looking at it, I'm surprised of the amount for the story mode. I'm not sure if it's worth the extra twenty quid. So that it's going to be interesting to see what people choose when it comes to what they're going to buy. And then Woogley's been on the discord. also one of our patrons who's been on to say don't pre order video games, especially ones that are only digital only because they're not going to run out of copies because people are preorddering now because you can download it a week earlier But you still can't play it until the nineteenth. There are issues online with people reselling preorder codes. I do know that that's a thing I think it's mainly because there's some places where that you can't you can't preordder and you can't download the digital version. And so a lot of people are trying to buy versions from other stores if that makes sense from other people. It's a whole issue, but like it's one of those things where it's like, People really want the game. and like even though we should never like preorder games, especially digital ones people' still going to do it and people still going to pay above the odds ' It's never going to quite live up to the hype, as it look, all of this I don't know. I don't know. I mean I remember The thing is like, who knows because with GTA five, came out. I you know, I sort of set aside the day to kind of play it. I sort of like barrelled through the campaign nonstop It was a brilliant It was a brilliant cultural moment because everyone I knew was playing it and we were all kind of like racing through the same kind of story mode at the same time. Obviously it was a fantastically sophisticated game for the time. And I just I simply don't know. I think that what's weird is that between GTA five and GTA six, we've had Cyberpunk which kind of feels like it sort of looms very large as like it's the thing that's most recent in my mind as kind of like a here we go. Hope everyone's ready for this kind of like huge moment and then it sort of fell flat a little bit. So I don't know. and also like is Is it going to be Funny is the satire going to be good? Like GTA five on Reflection was very hit and miss, like quite scatter shot with its like writing. There was some stuff that was like, you know, really really on it and just felt very Um you know, just just sort of like very like the perfect perfect gag for the perfect moment. This game has been in development for so long. I'm wondering if it's going to come out and it's going to have like political satire from twenty twenty two because like that's when it was all being, you know, when that's when that stuff was all being kind of locked in. Do you know what I mean? It's like, yeah, it's a game that it's a game that has to be like so of the moment Can they pull that off with this incredible development? That's really interesting. because the world has changed a lot sh in the last, you know, because you think, but they started developing this before COVID. You our COVID has changed the world massively. And then since then we've had Ls of political upheaval. We're currently living through a moment of a lot of political upheaval with war in the Middle East and this that and the other and This is a game that as Luke says, needs to be culturally relevant in order to sort of for the punchers to land as it were. It's easier, I suppose if you're making a game about planet somewhere that doesn't really exist or a historical toum aboutat the eighties, like F City was or what have you and so is but that's a problem with games as a whole, right for you to make Satire that's really current? Especially when the development cycles are just too long at this point. I think it can it's safe to say that this was in development for way too long and budget. We don't know. I think it's rumored that it's a billion, which is just unfathomable to think about So yeah, it would be interesting to see like if they do hit on all of the timely satire points because when when it falls flat it's pretty bad. like even the Bys, which is a very current show, by its like final season, like people were like people did not vibe with the satire in that show by the end. so I'm curious to see if it will go down a similar path or it could completely surprise me You know, I just I just hope it to me is it because Is just spe You know, for all those people who are excited about it who been waiting for so long to have something and they were like, yes, thank goodness. it's good. I think I think it I think it will do I think people really enjoy it. I think the main issue is obviously price People are already pricing because video games are just too expensive Yeah. L and like the price to even play GTA six launch, you have to have a PS five on Xbox. Xbox has shot the price up so it was Playsttation. And so like You you're spending big amounts of money. You probablyt could be spending a grand just arand. Yeah just to play this game. A grand You know, the only GTA six I care about is go to Backets Buy Armored Brackets Corps six. It works. works works. It works. Try writing it down. I think it'll be neater that way Okay, look, keep your thoughts coming on GT six. Something tells me we're going to be talking about it again between now. and november nineteenth Right, Shay, you've been playing something. What is that thing you've been playing? Is that any good? I've been playing something that comparatively is so much shorter than the probable runtime of GTA six. I've been playing mixtape. I finished it in four hours. It was one, it was a one and done, one. Hallelu! That what I'm saying. That's games we love. I do this for you sth Yeah, Mixlpe is pretty cool. It's a story that focuses on a little teenage trio of Stacy Cassandra and Slater. A the end of the school year, Stacy is going off to New York to become a music supervisor and so the plan is to attend this one big last party. That's like the main setup What's really cool is that given Stacy's like massive love for music, each chapter is underscored by a different song and she kind of like she introduces in like proper tease it up to the camera. So it's yeah, it's done really well. I'm going to preface what I say about this game by saying I did like it. It has an undeniable charm. L there are a lot of moments where I was just sitting there smiling because it's just very pleasant Um yeah, it's just it's It's very fun to play, quote unquote. There's not much gameplay. like you are occasionally pressing a button just to like move something along. Like there's a chase where you're in like a shopping cart and like you can kind of spin the cart around, but it doesn't really like have an effect on what happens. So if you're looking for like You know, really dexterous gameplay, is not this game is not going to give you that. It's all about the story and the relationship that the characters have to each other. I would say it's a very joyful story. It's pretty optimistic, which is nice. but if you're looking also for tension, there's not much of it there. It exists in some form of fashion Yeah, it's it's not a doom and gloom story at all So would you say it's like one of those games you might want to introduce someone to gaming through. you know, like Dispatch was big game Exactly do that. Yeah. But it's even lighter on like gameplay than Dispatch, I would say. So yeah, maybe for people who are just like very, very curious about video games, I think this would be like a a perfect entry point, especially if they have a love of movies because it is drawing on a lot of the kind of nineties coming of age stories. And I think that's actually my biggest problem with it Millennials, it's time to put the nighties down We have we have we've gone down this road too many times. Whoa whoa, whoa whoa whoa, hold your horses. Say, that is the stop reminiscing. No Nostalgia I've nostalgic I am not having this nies grow eating gracefully The eighties gets all the love The nineties barely get anything. That's not true, Stefan the nineties nineties the nineties getting so much love. The Nories is getting a lot of love now, which is absolutely wild to me. I'm like, this wasn't a good time at all. No what are you talking about Yeah It was a better time than now Yeah Yeah They call the nineties, shay. Did you know this They call the nineties a holiday in history because it was a relatively globally peaceful and prosperous time as opposed to every other single decade of the last hundred And here you are slagging it off. Hey, hey, I love the ninetighties, but I just feel like we have told the same story in like the same way with the same genre of music a million times. have to say like the soundtrack in this game, I want to know the budget for this video game because The liced music, some of the pools insane. like of course that's the Anapurnna like deep pockets, right There was not one Yeah There was not one hip hop track and I was like The nineties Nothing, like the nothing. they make one reference to This is how We do it by Monteel Jones, but they never play it And I was like, don't, Okay tuned to be fair tune. I was really waiting for it, you know? That's lapsed, doesn't it? It's not in it. It's not in it,., that's thatad. Yeah Metacritics score of eighty six. it sounds I mean, it sounds very different to Armoud Corps six L, doesn't it? It doesn't Why do you sayound like an accusation? I'm not saying I'm saying a statement of fact. It's's an accusation. Yeah, I am keen to play this one. I'm a huge, huge fan of life is strange and especially the bloom and rage. which was which feels like it kind of occupies the same sorts of space I a hundred percent know what you mean, Shay about can we stop telling the same story about the same woozy Summer Vibes VHS story about kids on bikes going in the woods and talking about their futures and stuff. Because every time you tell it As time moves on, it becomes less relevant to any kids who might be playing it today. It is just for people in their late thirties and forties now who are like kind of, yes, that is what it was like when I just talked about my future. Like, you know, just Yeah, Hud I fing outside. Yeah it was like J just ler. And' Every time we tell one of those stories, we're not telling a story about what it's like to grow up today. and it just means I basically have no idea what it's like to be you know a teenager now Um So, you know, except for like hard hitting dramas that I watch on TV which make it look extremely frightening. But I guess that's And buts that's how it works, right? As you get older and media is tailored to you. It's like, Nostalgia. It was nice in the nineties. What did you say Stefano Holid?ry. Remember Power Rangers? Remember cassette tapes not like now. It's scary now. You won't like it It's like an old lold a leg Yes Look how it I know I'll be sticking to monster makes, please Very good you can get it a sixteen quid everywhere basically It's on game Pass,'s on their Nintendo EShop PlayStation St and Steam. If that sounds like a bit of you, if you want to reminisce about some of those tunes, if that if you want to even though distinct lack of hip hop, which is clearly a miss, If you want to introduce someone to games in a gaming lightk way but tells a story, then mixt tip could be for you, but the sun's it. Thankk you very much.ool shes. D Did you like it or you didn't like I like the game. I like how it made me feel. It was very charming. It's very, very charming. The performances in it, I think are really, really good just like every now and every now then I was just like, man, like You guys are you're in your thirties, you're in your forties, yourour knees hurt. You are never going to return to this time. Leave it. Oh, that's personal. Oh My knees hurt. So it is very personal for me. Soon she said that I had to like be move my weight around a bit. I've had reconstructive surgery, thank you very much. Yeah And' just like we're adults. I want more, I actually just want more stories told from the perspective of adults. Like we still go through stuff. We still have emotional breakthroughs Give us that please. I think as well, like this this genre of game, which is very like gameplay and mechanics light and very ambiance and character and writing forward I know exactly what you mean, Jake, because that's exactly how I felt about Life E strrangunion where it's like, so did you like it? And I'm like, I don't know. It made me smile and laugh a lot, but also it was so annoying. L and and that's I think this genre of game lets you feel those kind of complex like attitudes towards what you mean more than I do like that this genre has emerged like over the years though. like story first gameplay takes a kind of backseat because like s it's made gaming a lot more accessible for a lot more new people which which I really like and it's brought And it's and I've found games that I've like resonated with that I didn't think I would Mainly because I love gameplay mechanics. I played thirteen sentinels over the last six months and that's story for flight thirty hours with about five hours of gameplay But like it's like, okay, there's games where I can just sit back on the couch, just take it in. get immersed by a crazy story and I don't necessarily have to be doing some crazy There' gymnastics in my fonts. This sounds very similar to The music is heavier, but the emphasis on music is heavier. There wass a game called Lake, which is very much this way someone goes back and and looks after her old house and you can fall in love and that sort of stuff and he's basically driving a van around's very, very light on the gameplay mechanics. And so yeah,'s definitely it's definitely got an audience, isn't it? But if you've played Mixtape, let us know Did you like it? Do you even know that then get involved as a compition? Do you need it? Probably. Yeah. Any historians out there want to argue with why the eighties gets more love than the nineties, then find us in the comments. Right, Okay, let's get into our trivia. Then we've got an answer locked in already by Luke of Course. The question was this from Rob, No disisguises. Thank you Rob for your question In the nineteen eighty two arcade game Lost Tomb There was a feature included that is now common across many modern games, a feature that most players don't like but won't stop anytime soon. Luke is locked in QTEs. My guess is microractions or having to pay for something extra it's quite yeah, having to pay for something extra. Shay, what are you going what are you going to go for? I think I at the top, I did say like instant like instant fail stealth like sections. Okay. Is it cheeky just say like an instant fail Noope, that's not cheey. Okay can go with that instant fail foriche in an arcade, there will be annoying wn in eighty that I think I'm just going go with time like a time mechanic which is like so punishing that you have to put in more money increase the time. So a mixture of your like microtangejections and a time thing. Say that again, toit because you has two ancestors, so pick one a very strict time limit, a time lit. that gives you a game over, but you have to put more money to get more time Time limit. Okaykay. Right. The answer is H's micotransaction Oh no D why we met too That is a good point. I don't know if you win that time that? Is it time? Maybe. It says microransaction. The players would be offered the chance to buy more am more in between levels by inserting coins into the machine. Yeah, you are recogn. cheeky That's cheeky. There's a great video by West Coast Ninja that explains it all on YouTube. So Ia, you stay in third, I stay in fourth U No no what Iang about this is happening in real time, dear listener. we're interest The algorithm is figuring out. The algorithm is figuring out in real time U Oh, Ineel, you've actually gone up to second because we've given you the point there Oh I think get a point. that's controversial. That's controversial That's controversial because I don't know if that. I'll take it
