The nine o'clock news is a nation program from London for the first time in color, Panorama. Broadcasting house an illustrated summary of the news. In your television correspondents comment from the BBC. But first, take a look at this new style. Hello welcome to D ejah News with me Lucy Porter. This is the quiz in which two teams are tested on their knowledge of the past hundred years, courtesy of clips from the BBC's vast news archive. We've trolled the depths of the BBC basement an unearthed treasure , like this recording of the radio four continuity announced a studio falling apart with perfect timing. Azer Briggs, the social historian and university administrator who wrote a fine volume history of the BBC That was the ceiling falling in on radio full continuity announcer Luke Tudenham back in twenty seventeen. Don't worry he is fine, although sadly one of the pips didn't make it. So let's get on to the quiz and meet the teams. Do they know their Mairei from their matelist, their chapman from their chakrabarti, their anonymous source from their tomato source? Let's find out team one, where would you introduce yourselves? Hi, I'm James. I'm originally from Maclesfield, now living in London. I enjoy playing paddle and I work as a civil servant. Hi, I'm Ian from Maclesfield in Cheshire, playing my local Quiz League, also a big music fan and I've recently retired from a career in IT risk, audits and consultancy. Congratulations on your retirement. I never understand what risk management is. For me, risk management is just things like don't order the seafood from a service station at two in the morning . Now let's meet team two. Hi, I'm Jason. I'm originally from East Yorkshire, but now in London, I'm a keen outdoor swimmer. The colder, the better and I work for a nautical charity. That's brilliant and Harriet. I'm Harriet and I am from South Yorkshire specifically I am from the great city of Sheffield. I'm a keen follower of politics and I work for a charity which is not nautical, it is a charity which focuses on poverty. Welcome all and over the next half an hour you'll be hearing sound clips of stories from the past century and answering questions based on and around them . Conferring is allowed, will be keeping school and the winning team will receive the coveted prize of the Dejan News trophy . It's time for round one, which is name that event. This is open to both teams. You'll hear an archive clip. Buzz in as soon as you recognise it. Tell me what the new story is, then I'll ask you what year it took place. Two points for the event and a bonus point for the year. Get the event right and you'll win the chance to answer follow up questions worth a point each open to just your team. If no one identifies the clip correctly, then the follow up questions are for everyone. Fingers on buzzers, here's our first clip . That is the man who the world has been waiting to see . Goodness me, Jason straight in there, who was it? I think it's the release of Nelson Mandela. It absolutely is and you will get a bonus point if you can tell me the year. It's interrupted Antiques Roadshow if you remember, Reilly. So nineteen ninety It was nineteen ninety one. You get three follow up questions. Firstly , what was the name of the South African president who released Mandela? You think it's FW Declerc? You are absolutely right, it was FW Declerc. Well done . From what building in Cape Town did Mandela give his first speech as a free man? It's not Robin Island because that's . I don't know. I really don't know. It was city hall. It was City Hall in Cape Town. And your final question is Mandela was given the nickname Nelson by his teacher on his first day of school , but what was his original given name ? I remember reading it but I can't Oh gosh . It's a miss I'm afraid. Of course my Cosa pronunciation is not great . His given first name was Rolly Hacha. So here comes our second clip. This is open to both teams again. We want the event and the year fastest fingers first . They came with a profound sense of purpose , convinced that they represent the true feelings of Britain and determined to send a message to Tony Blair, which he will ignore at his peril. From team one there we've got Ian Is it the women's Institute when they abused Tony Blair and booed him at one of his speeches . That was a brilliant historical moment, but it's not the one that we're looking for . Let's pass it to team two. Harriet? I think it's the marches against the evasion of Iraq. That is correct. And there we are. So it was the anti Iraq war protest s and did you get the year? I think it would be two thousand . It was two thousand three. So your first follow up question founded in the weeks after nine eleven named the anti war group that was the lead organizer of the UK protest s. I think it's the Stop the War Coalition. Yeah. The Stop the War Coalition. It was the Stop the War Coalition while done. What was the main four word slogan used by protesters? Not in our name . Or was it not in my name? Not in my name or our name? Not in our name, I think. Okay . Not in our name. It was not in my name . And which actor known for his role as Owen in The Vicar of Dibbley, was one of a hundred reported celebrity signatories to an anti war petition delivered to Downing Street in september two thousand two. Owen was Roger Lloyd Pack? I think you're right, yes.. Yeah Roger Lloyd Pack. And you are absolutely correct. Roger Lloyd Pack was also of course known for playing trigger in only falls and horses, but we didn't mention that in the question because of course it would need a warning such fun . Okay . And here comes our third and final clip, which is open to both teams again. Buzz in when you know the event and then I will ask you the year. Secretary of State for War, responsible for the lives of men. He can't afford to have dingy companions or squallid devices. Intolerable that a man in this position should have lied . Yes, Harris. The Perfume affair. It was the Perfumeo Fair. Can you tell me which year? nineteen sixty two? sixty three? sixty three, I think. No, was it sixty two? I don't know. I'm gonna pick a year. Go on. nineteen sixty three. It was nineteen sixty three for you . Okay , so your follow up questions on that and these are just for you two . John Profumo resigned after lying to Parliament about his affair with which modelel? Keer. Christine Keeley. Christine Keeler is correct. Profumo and Keeler were introduced by Stephen Ward at a glamorous party at Lord Astor's Country House. What was Ward's seemingly unglamorous profession . Osteopath y was Osteopath. You were absolutely glamorous there's osteopaths going on glamorous. Talking about very glamorous okay and finally during, Stephen Ward's trial, the model Mandy Rice Davis was told by Ward's lawyer that Lord Aster had denied having an affair with her. What was her pithy response? Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? Not the exact answer I'm afraid we are being very strict so it was just Willy Wood, wouldn't he? Okay, so let's have a look at the scores now. James and Ian have yet to score, but Jason and Harry are in the lead on fourteen . And here we go round two, which is non stop vox pop. In this round, teams will take it in turns to listen to members of the public being interviewed about a news event. You'll hear a total of three different members of the public describing the same event. If you get it right after the first clip, you get the maximum of three points. If you get it right after the second clip, you get two points and inevitably if you need to hear the third clip before you get it right , you get one point. So let's hear the first one which is for you, team one, James and Ian. It's great news because it means that we can get her out. Maybe something to do with them like the fall of Thatcher, like Poltax. I think we might need another. I think we need another one. Yeah. I mean, you can't have a guess because it costs you nothing, but if you discussed the Poltax program it wasn't. I don't know why I encourage you to have that. Yes I can be quite cruel sometimes, but it wasn't that but it's fine because you get to hear clip number two. Every chance to get the vote you will vote, but they're just taking advantage of a bad situation at the moment. So it could still be Faccher. Is it just the downfall of Thatcher? It is not that, but we can hear a third clip that might help. You're joking . Not another one Was this Brenda from Bristol? it was wailing there was another election soon after they'd been a previous one, haven't they? It must be Theresa May's snack election. We think it was the twenty seventeen. Yes, I'm not going to talk to you anymore. It was Brenda from Bristol. Well done for identifying that. It was Theresa May calling the Snap General Election in twenty seventeen. Now we turn to team two. Here come your non stop vox pops. Let's hear the first one. I know that they've been working anyway for years to get it sorted out and I'm sure that most things will operate. So it's a Northern Irish accent and things have been working for years to get things sorted out. I mean, it could be the restoration of government at Stormmont, but I don't know anything else to go on. The restoration of government at Stormmont. It is not that no worries because you get to hear a second clip. They think that their washing machines are going b tourst open and flood the kitchen and their microwave is going to blow up and their toaster's going to start throwing out toast. But this isn't the case. Oh toaster is the key thing there . When it was two thousand Y two K Millennium Bug? The millennium bug was exactly what I was looking for Mar . At the end of round two, let's see what that's done to the scores. So team one, James and Ian have one point and Jason and Harriet still in the lead on sixteen . Every day, Stanford Medicine advances human health, turning scientific discoveries into new found hope and breakthrough innovations into personal triumphs. Together, we're pioneering treatments for patients of all ages , fighting cancers with cutting edge cell therapies that are more effective with fewer side effects, shaping the future of health while making a difference today. Stanford Medicine advancing knowledge, improving lives . Stanford medicine. org . I can. You can't spell American without it. During the Jeep Make this the summer event, celebrate two hundred and fifty years of the country that can, with the vehicle that always can. I can go where freedom takes me with Jeep Wrangler's legendary four by four capability. I can bring the whole crew with grand wagoners three rows of seating. I can chase every day with Cherokee's one hundred and forty standard and available safety features. And I can see this country in all its beauty in the award winning Grand Cherokee. You can do anything with a great deal at the Jeep make this the summer event. Cheap is a registered trademark of FCA USLC . Now it's time for Chrono illogical. We've taken three historical audio clips from the same dec ade and jumbled up the order. Your job is to listen and arrange them neatly and chronologically . So team two, you're in the lead so you get to choose would you like the nineteen sixties or the nineteen eighties? Are you probably eighties? Yeah, let's go with the eighties. So the nineteen eighties we're going to play you three clips, work out the event and the year each happened, then tell me the order they happened in. There are three points available for a correctly ordered decade and a point for every event you correctly name . So here come the clips from the eighties clip a. The conference has decided a return to work on Tuesday and that the dispute in this industry will continue until the aims are completely fulfilled and in particular that there is an amnesty for those who have been dismissed in the dispute. Okay, so that was clip A . So if you work out what that was and roughly when in the decade you think it took place then you can begin to put them in order. So let's listen to clip B. The craft in the film is first class, the writing is funny, the acting by the children achingly realistic, and the design of the creature he's a deliberately ugly little bugger inspired. Okay , so that was clip B, so decide what that was and roughly when it came. And finally we're going to play you clip C And this is what they're all waiting for , the corkscrew said to be the biggest of its kind in the world . We're now being pulled up to the highest point some eighty five feet and within seconds these cars will be doing sixty five miles an hour. Here we go . So you now have all three clips AB and C. Can you tell me what events from the nineteen eighties you think you heard and the order you think they happened? Second one was definitely ET F lowing Home eighty two . I think the first one is the minor strike I wasn't sure what stage of the minor strike it was but eighty four or eighty five I think and the second one. Final one sounded like something to do with the channel tunnel which we think which I think was l ater but I don't know what yeah exactly So we're going B A C . I'm sorry to say that you didn't get the correct order the correct order was CBA . You were correct that ET was released in nineteen eighty two , but what we were looking for specifically was the end of the miners strike because that was in the clip he was saying we've decided to return to work so we needed a bit more clarity on that and it was not the channel tunnel . It was actually Alton Towers theme park events in nineteen eighty but I get exactly exactly what you were thinking. So now we're going to take team one, James and Ian. We're going to take you back to the nineteen sixties . So if you can identify what the events are and in which order in the decade they happened, here is clip A country which we all know proudly look up to as our common fatherland a grand mosaic whose parts have been brought together by bit . Okay, that was clip A so decide what you think it is and whereabouts roughly in the decade you would place it . Let's hear clip B . I hate it every minute . I thought it was disgusting, despicable , hypocritical event and I remember being dumped out of a car into about six feet of mud . I was given some coffee which had LSD in it . And all I got was these Americans coming up to me telling me that this was the beginning of a new line . So if you can work out what that was and roughly when in the decade it happened, I'm finally clip C. In this way, less than forty eight hours after its launching from Cape Canaveral, Telstar has already linked the old world with the new in both directions. You are in Paris and I invite you to spend a few pleasant moments with me . L icity Basi Monkey kicks . Oh I love that. I could listen to that all night. Right, my darlings, do you have an order? We think the last one of this was I, think ninet, een sixty two , the launch of the first US satellite. I think the second one was Woodstock in nineteen sixty nine . The first one was struggling with. It sounds like the independence of an African country. He said something about a mosaic country . So like multiple countries coming together Nigerian independence when the Biophrons declared independence from Nigeria in nineteen sixty eight . So that's good for that . Okay, so your order please our order is going to be C A B , well I can tell you you did not get the order right sadly correct order was AC Nigerian independ ence. It was the independence of Nigeria from the UK, not Biafra from Nigeria and that was in nineteen sixty . Then C was the first live transatlantic television broadcast from nineteen sixty two and then it was the Woodstock Festival in nineteen sixty nine. So you did get one point from that well done . The schools are team one, James and Ian are on two and Jason and Har arer onis seventeen . Now it's time to hear from our listeners in the world's most awkwardly named quiz round listenery history Teams you will take it in turn to hear clips sent in by our lovely listeners describing their memories of a historical event from within their lifetime via voice note. You'll get one point for each event you name correctly. So listen to the ages which will be a huge clue . So team one for you, James and Ian, this is Oliver and he's aged nine and he's from Cheshire. At first when they were starting to f ly, the toilet didn't work a space flight or I don't know which we guess Tim Peak's launch into space ? It was not Tim Peak, it was a bit more recent. It was the Artemis two Moon mission in twenty twenty six . Never mind. So you'll go team two, this is Nick . He's forty six and he's from London. What is the event he's talking about? It's genuinely one of the most upsetting things I've ever seen, the Leotards and the lapping. I really love cats, but it was enough to put me off cats for life. George Galloway on big on celebrity big brother Rule Eland with Rule Elon Sky the audience I loved the audience reaction were they were like Oh no we'd forgotten about that . Why did you remind us it was, indeed, George Galloway being a cat on Big Brother in two thousand six? Well done. Now for you team one, this is Katie. She is forty one and she lives in Erdre and what is the news event she's talking about? I loved them so much but actually by the time it ended I wasn't that bothered because my favourite had left the year before after they did the press conference. My mum took me to see Ace Venture Detective at the cinema to cheer me up. The Spice Hub be on the boy bands as well. . Is it the breakup of the Spice Girls? Oh, I'm afraid it's not. It was a breakup of a band. You're absolutely right, but it was when take that split up in nineteen ninety six . So finally team two, here's Phoebe, age six from Knutsford. The mab was singing in Spanish the whole time . They were whittling their tummies and whiggling their bottoms and Donald Trump hated it So any ideas ? I'm struggling with this one. I'm trying to think what Donald Trump would specifically hate. If there was a specific he would hate Is it just a Eurovision? It must be OK, your guess is? Eurovision. It was Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime performance in twenty twenty six . So at the end of that round, team one, James and Ian are on two points and Jason and Harris are on eighteen . We are moving to our penultimate round by numbers . Here the contestants will take it in turns to test not just their history skills but also their arithmetic. You will hear three audio clips and you need' toll work out the numbers needed to do the sum we give you. To be clear, the correct answer will always be a whole number, no fractions and years are in four figures. And you might want to shift your brains up a gear because this is the difficult round . So if you give me the correct answer you will get five points Yes . So team one I want you to take the number of days the Prime Minister in ip Cl one Number was in office . I campaigned as a conservative and I will govern as a conservative . And leave us a lettuce So you need to take the number of days that prime minister was in office and then you divide it by the number of Oscar nominations held by the person in clip number two. No one knew how to end it. They said I should shoot it both ways. Either I should go with the husband in the plane played by Paul Henry or stay on the ground with Humphrey Bogart . And it was very difficult to act out these love scenes because I really didn't know which one of the two men I was in love with. How many Oscar nominations did they get? Finally, you need to add the year that clip number three took place. I think the country now should treat his past with generosity , recognizing that they owe him much. Here was a man of high principle who was recognized that if he is no longer physically fit , then it is his duty to retire from the sea . Okay , so you need to take the number of days the Prime Minister in Clip Number One was in office . You then divide that by the number of Oscar nominations held by the person in clip number two and then you add the year that clip number three took place . So you have a number for me already very quickly. Well we think the first homers list truss for,ty nine days? It's Ingrid Bergman. You're absolutely right. Obviously the clip was from referring to Casablanca. Yes. It must be seven on seven pretend which seems about plausible. Seven Oscar nominations.. Okay Now the last one was tricky. We think it sounds like an old politician needed to retire. It could be Churchill. So that could be nineteen fifty five when he stepped down from the Premiership. So that would give the nineteen fifty five plus seven that would give one nine six two . Oh okay, you were two numbers out. It was one nine six four because you were absolutely right that Liz Truss was in power for forty nine days. You were absolutely right that in Ingrid Bergman received seven Oscar nominations. You identified her correctly, where you fell down was that that clip was actually concerning the resignation of Sir Anthony Eden , which took place in nineteen fifty seven . So no points but the absolute admiration and respect of the audience I get OK, team two, it's your turn to hear three audio clips and work out the numbers needed to do the sum we give you. Again, the correct answer will always be a whole number. So let's take the year the event in clip number one happened. We're seeking here not merely to provide services for those who are sick , but to make a healthy nation . The aim is to ensure that the provision of proper care and treatment shall not depend on financial resources. Okay, so the year that Clip Number one concerned and now you need to subtract the year that the event in Clip two happened. Communicate number one under the command of General Eisenhower , Allied naval forces , supported by strong All forces began landing Allied armies this morning on the northern coast of France. Okay, so that was clip number two which you need to subtract from the year that clip number one happened and then your final part of the sum is to times that figure by the number of times the person in clip three won Wimbledon. My three year old boy when he was watching here today my wife was saying every time I hit a bond to the net he was just going rubbish rubbish Right . Let me know when you have a number to present to me. Okay , we think we hope the number is eight. You are right the number is eight . Would you like to tell me your workings? So I think that was the announcement of the beginning of the National Health Service in nineteen forty eight. That was Clement Atley announcing the establishment of the NHS in nineteen forty eight. Well done. And then the second clip, I think was D, nineteenay forty four. It was, indeed, and finally Andy Murray winning Wimbledon twice. That's right. So you took nineteen forty four from nineteen forty eight, times it by two. You got eight. You are absolutely right , you get five points . Yes . Going into the final round we have team one, James Nina are on two and team two, Jason and Harris are on twenty three It's time for our final round three little words. You'll hear snippets of famous speeches which we have cut off mid sentence. We want you to finish the speech with its correct final three words. This involves both general knowledge and a bit of educated guesswork because you can buzz in as soon as you like if you think you know what the final three words will be. It's a quick fire around, every clip is open to both teams, one point if all three words are exactly correct, fingers on buzzers, here we go. And therefore as a free man , I take pride in the word Ian Bene Berlin. Yes, you're absolute ly right, JFK, nineteen sixty one. Well done . Next slide . If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights and women's rights . Ian. Are human rights? Yes, well done Hillary Clinton in nineteen ninety five. Right. Number three. Well, you're on today. Apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you're watching, don't anyone go on it, yes, Ian? Worry there isn't? Yes. Well, don't my next clip. From this evening, I must give the British people a very simple instruction . You must Jason ? Stay at home. Stay at home absolutely. Boris Johnson, twenty twenty, let's hear the next one. And we are in Germined to continue our efforts to remove possible sources of differe nce and thus to contribute to a sure . Okay, we've got hearing on that one. Unilateral declaration of independence. No, it wasace Pe of Europe, Neville Chamberlain in nineteen thirty eight. Let's hear the next one. They liked her, they loved her, they regarded her. Yep, Harriet was first to buzz on that one. The People's Princess. The People's That's how I describe you, Harriet. The People's Princess Lovely Blair, nineteen ninety seven . Okay , next slip. I wanted a man in the world and I want everybody out there on TV to know it. James? Like a bee? Oh , not quite . It was I am the greatest Mohammed Ali nineteen sixty three Next slip. I think the people in this country have had Harriet enough of experts? Enough of experts Michael Goebb in twenty sixteen. Well done exciting round, right next clip? mister Garbachev opened this gate. Okay , right, how it was straight in there, down these walls? Not why
